Gerard Butler Brings Shakespeare Into the Now

As the Romans Do: Gerard Butler has joined Ralph Fiennes, William Hurt and Vanessa Redgrave in Fiennes's directorial debut, Coriolanus. The movie is set in contemporary times but based on Shakespeare's Roman political drama. Fiennes reportedly hired Butler because the 300 star already owns a pair of mandals. [THR]

Boner Champ: Sigourney Weaver, John C. Reilly and Alia Shawkat have signed up for the comedy Cedar Rapids, starring Ed Helms and Anne Heche. The lead role is in Helms' wheelhouse: he plays a small-town insurance salesman (might as well be a paper salesman) who, after his role model dies, has to attend a conference in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where his mind is blown by the big city. Just wait until he sees Scranton! [Variety]

Red Hot: Helen Mirren will team up Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis in the action thrilled Red. The film, based on three books, centers on a retired CIA agent whose leisure time is interrupted when an assassin comes after him. The movie is set for a November 2010 release, though it sounds like a perfect summer flop blockbuster. [Variety]

Bear Necessity: The Berenstain Bears are finally coming to the big screen. The mixed live action/CGI film will be a family comedy, presumably with a moral lesson. More than 250 Bears books have sold 260 million copies since 1962. Shawn Levy, the director of both Night at the Museum films, is co-producing. And if he's smart he'll aim to cast all bear actors. We're looking at you Richard Karn. [THR]

Fat Person: Wish you knew more about Kirstie Alley's struggle to lose weight? You're in luck. She's partnering with A&E for a reality series about her belly, her hunt for jobs and her life as a single mom in Hollywood. With this one, A&E is clearly attempting to cover the "E" (entertainment) and not the "A" (arts). [Variety]

Stereotypes!: The Style network thinks this is a good idea: an hour-long reality series filmed in a Central New Jersey beauty salon called Jerseylicious. And we agree.[Variety]

Democrat Bill Owens Wins NY-23

After a long night of being too-close-to-call, the NY-23 election has ended with Democrat Bill Owens's victory over Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, according to MSNBC and the AP. With 88 percent of the precincts reporting and Owens leading 49 percent to 46 percent, Hoffman conceded. Republican Dede Scozzafava, who dropped out of the race last weekend and endorsed Owens, had six percent of the vote.

Watertown, New York Mayor Jeff Graham, a Hoffman supporter, attributed the loss partially to Scozzafava's endorsement. “We lost,” he said. “The Scozzafava endorsement, the [Watertown Daily Times] endorsement of Owens — I mean, they roughed Hoffman up.”

Democrat wins House seat in heavily GOP area in NY [AP]

Update 1:00: Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo is having a hard time finding a silver lining for Democrats:

The Democratic victory in NY-23 provides an interesting bookend to what was unquestionably a disappointing night for Democrats. As I noted a few days ago, for the right-wingers behind the Hoffman candidacy, knocking out Scozzafava was the big prize. Actually winning the race outright would have been icing on the cake, but hardly necessary. They have shown they can topple any moderate Republicans who don't defer to right-wing dominance of the party.

Chris Christie Elected New Jersey Governor

Republican Chris Christie has upset Jon Corzine and will be the new governor of New Jersey, according to the AP and the Times. With 75 percent of precincts reporting Christie had 50 percent of the vote to Corzine's 44 percent. Independent Chris Daggett had five percent.

According to the Times, Republican party chair Michael Steele is on his way to Christie HQ to celebrate the victory. Also there to help celebrate — the B Street Band, "the original Bruce Springsteen cover band." He's going to be good at this.

Republican Christie captures NJ governor's seat [AP]

Update 11:45: President Obama had a lot riding on a Corzine win and Christie's victory has invited the opposition to pile on. Glenn Reynolds starts it off at the Post:

"That makes Obama’s health-care "reform" package look iffy and his other big plans for remaking America look even iffier. With the hope having faded, enthusiasm for change seems much diminished. From a mythic figure, Obama has shrunk to an ordinary politician — and, so far, not an obviously deft one."

Dan Balz at the Washington Post doesn't think it's as bad for Obama as Reynolds does, but he still thinks it's bad:

"Neither gubernatorial election amounted to a referendum on the president, but the changing shape of the electorates in both states and the shifts among key constituencies revealed cracks in the Obama 2008 coalition and demonstrated that, at this point, Republicans have the more energized constituency heading into next year's midterm elections."

Bloomberg Wins Third Term as Mayor

Michael Bloomberg has defeated Bill Thompson to win his third term as New York's mayor, according to the Times. The race was called with just 17 percent of precincts reporting and Bloomberg leading Thompson 49.2 percent to 47.7 percent.

According to NBC New York Thompson has conceded.

Bloomberg Wins Third Term as Mayor; Republican Is Elected Virginia Governor [NYT]

Update 10:35: NBC reverses its call for Bloomberg!

Update 11:00: NBC New York has removed its reference to Thompson conceding. Meanwhile, Rachel Maddow says NBC has re-called the race for Bloomberg.

Update 12:40: So Bloomberg's election margin sure was small, huh? A guy who outspent his opponent by more than ten times should have won by a landslide. At least that's what everyone is saying tonight.

The Daily News ran into a less-than-thrilled Bloomberg campaign adviser, who said "That's hardly a mandate," of Bloomberg's 50 percent to 46 percent victory.

Ben Smith at Politco says Bloomberg's small margin spells two things:

that Bloomberg pretty much needed to spend something approaching $100 million to overcome a deep resistance to his third term, despite a challenger who didn't break through; and that Bloomberg heads into a third term that appears, in some sense, basically unwelcome.

The other question getting kicked around in the aftermath of Thompson's closer-than-expect finish — what is President Obama had really campaigned for him? We'll never know.

Will Someone Please Let Hulk Hogan Play Bass?

Hulk Hogan (née The Hulkster) is a wrestler, actor, dad and Thunderlips. But you knew that. What you didn't know is that he is "a great bass player" (his words!). Yesterday Hogan reveled that he once tried to join the Rolling Stones by getting Jerry Hall to put in a good word with Mick Jagger. Didn't work. Ever the persistent bassist, Hogan also offered his talents to Metallica. His calls were never returned. “I would have quit wrestling in a heartbeat to be a bass player for Metallica,” Hogan said. We would quit our jobs in a heartbeat too if it meant seeing Hogan put Lars Ulrich in a headlock.

Bored To Death Panel: ‘Through Troubles and Into More Troubles, That's My Motto’

Moderator John Hodgman noted that one of these people resembled a "drowned ghostly ship's captain." We'll leave it to you to figure out who.

Although HBO has been widely praised (and rightly so) for their ability to cultivate hour-long, original dramas that strike a cultural chord, they haven't had quite the same record in developing half-hour comedies. For every bold success like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Eastbound & Down, there have been scads of shows like Lucky Louie, Little Britain USA or Summer Heights High that have been rightfully shuffled off to early graves. Which is why when Bored To Death first launched in September of this year, we initially approached novelist Jonathan Ames's first stab at a television series with a bit of trepidation.

However, over the course of the first season's eight episodes, your friendly Vulture editors (and even New York television critic Emily Nussbaum) have warmed to the show's many inherent charms. So we made our way over to the Paley Center for Media in midtown Manhattan last night for a sold-out panel discussion entitled "From Raymond Chandler To Craigslist: HBO's Bored To Death," which featured stars Jason Schwartzman and Ted Danson alongside the aforementioned Ames and was moderated by John Hodgman. After the show, Vulture sat down with the gang to get their thoughts about whether not smoking ginseng can get you high, what they think of their Emmy chances, and if the red-hot Zach Galifianakis would return for the show's second season.

On what drew the cast to forego movie roles and network sitcom riches in order to be a part of Bored To Death:
Jason Schwartzman: "Most of the novelists I love are dead, and Jonathan Ames is alive."

Jonathan Ames: "HBO suggested Ted and, to be honest, I hadn't thought of him. I hadn't imagined the role to be that big."

Ted Danson: "They did? That's so cool! [...] I think Curb kind of sprung me loose in my head, and maybe in others's, from the sitcom kind of mold. Part of me really wanted to not have to take a job just to make X amount of money because I felt like, where they were able to pay me the most amount of money is if I do a half-hour network sitcom. It's tempting. Do I go chase the money, or do I chase something different? I like comedy that comes from sadness, and I love drama that has humor in it. And I love this, this definitely has a layer of complicated, sad, full of foibles. And that to me is really fun."

Jonathan Ames: "[Ted was good in the pilot that he] immediately killed off two other characters that were in the pilot, because they were ephemeral. Initially, I had imagined the ensemble to be larger."

On the role that marijuana plays on the show:
Jonathan Ames: "I think it can be a lovely drug, from my memory of it. But it's definitely not a third character, though the characters do enjoy it. I think there might be something going on in the country with the legalization of it that we're tapping into. It doesn't have to be this scary thing, it can be medicinal, and dreamy. I will say one thing. Something arrived in the mail today. This company that makes vaporizers sent me a handheld one that looks like a cell phone."

Ted Danson: [deadpans] "That was Woody [Harrelson] ... But really, just smoke ginseng. Inhale it. Do the pipe. Hold it in, then say something stupid, and you'll be higher than a kite."

On whether or not they think that the show will be nominated for any Emmy awards next year:
Ted Danson: "Awards are very complicated. It's a no-win situation. It draws the worst of your ego to the forefront of your brain. So, I've been nominated for awards maybe 14 or 15 times and lost the vast majority of them. So I try not to think about it until the day of, if it happens."

Jonathan Ames: "Can we have a Major League Baseball All-Star selection instead? I wouldn't mind us getting nominated for an Emmy because I'd like to go to one of those parties."

On whether or not Zach Galifianakis will be involved next season:
Ted Danson: "So long as he doesn't come back with a big head!"
Jonathan Ames: "He's definitely a part of it. And he wants to be. I think he really enjoys acting with Jason and Ted."

Did Kushner Urge Editor to Take Out a Hit on Jersey Paper?

Jared Kushner has quickly acquired all the trappings of a Manhattan power player — the real estate, the bold-faced wife, and the vanity publication. But he can't quite seem to leave New Jersey behind. The long-running Kushner family beef with the New Jersey Star-Ledger seems to have played a role in New York Observer editor Tom McGeveran's decision to quit last week. McGeveran cited a side project (a "publication," he told us) as the reason for his departure. But Observer staffers tell us that Kushner — a hands-on publisher who clashed with previous editor Peter Kaplan — wanted to go after the Star-Ledger, leading to a blowup that tipped McGeveran over the edge.

The Kushner family's history with the Star-Ledger is tortuous. It was the gleeful paper of record during the political-donation scandal that eventually put Charles Kushner, Jared's dad, in prison five years ago. This year, it has closely tracked the trial of Charles's brother-in-law and business partner, Richard Stadtmauer, for tax fraud. The Star-Ledger is also a competitor to Kushner's website, PolitickerNJ.com, and the young Kushner even considered buying it last year, according to The Wall Street Journal.

McGeveran became the Observer editor under difficult conditions — immediate layoffs, a bare-bones budget, and an interim title. Kushner interviewed candidates throughout his tenure, and the young publisher also tried at least once to mandate coverage, sources say. Last month Kushner urged McGeveran to write a hit piece on the struggling Star-Ledger. The story that resulted, by John Koblin, evenhandedly detailed the troubles in print journalism statewide, featuring the Star-Ledger's woes prominently. "What came back was not satisfactory to Jared," said an Observer source; he wanted more blood. The ensuing conflict offended McGeveran's ethics, according to people who know him — "It was the straw that broke the camel's back," said another co-worker.

Kushner's reps at Rubenstein PR wouldn't comment on the fracas, but McGeveran denied to us that it ever happened. "Jared's and my relationship as editor and publisher was a success from my point of view," he said. Staffers at the paper are optimistic about well-known rumored replacements who would be able to stand up to any bullying from the Kushner family. Until Ivanka gets involved, of course, and then all bets are off ...

Breaking: Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to Host the Oscars

The Academy just announced that Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin have accepted an offer from producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic to serve as co-hosts for March 7's Oscar ceremony. Martin has emceed the Academy Awards alone twice before (in 2001 and 2002), and both have honed their hosting abilities over record numbers of appearances on Saturday Night Live (Martin's hosted SNL 15 times, and Baldwin 14, more than anyone else). They might not add up to a Jackman, but they'll do, we suppose! Full press release, after the jump.

Beverly Hills, CA (November 3, 2009) — Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will serve as co-hosts of the 82nd Academy Awards®, Oscar telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman announced today.

“We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars,” said Shankman and Mechanic. “Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.”

“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.

“I don’t play the banjo but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars - it’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Baldwin.

Martin hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards shows, earning an Emmy nomination for the first stint. He has also served as a presenter on the show several times, most recently at the ceremony in February when he appeared with Tina Fey. He is currently touring with the bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers in support of his latest album “The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo.” In 1977 and 1978 Martin won Grammys for Best Comedy Recording. He earned a third Grammy in 2001 in the Best Country Instrumental Performance category. In 2007 Martin earned a Kennedy Center Honor.

Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in “The Cooler.” That year also marked his most recent appearance as a presenter on the show. Baldwin currently stars as Jack Donaghy on the comedy “30 Rock,” a role for which he has won two Emmys (in 2008 and 2009). Baldwin earned a Tony nomination in 1992 for his performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

So who was intimidating whom? Maybe nobody, really. An elections commissioner told the Daily News, "We had electioneering within the 100-foot polling marker," and the police were called to ensure the offenders moved at least 101 feet away — "a routine procedure here in the county." Those weren't the only accusations of dirty tricks flying around today, however.

Hoffman himself got in on the action when he held a short press availability to reveal that a volunteer's tires had been ruthlessly slashed! “I think the Democrats are doing anything they possibly can to steal this election away from the 23rd District," he said. According to this theory, that one volunteer's mobility was really integral to a Hoffman victory. But the Plattsburgh police looked into it and concluded that the tire was actually slashed by ... a bottle in the road that the volunteer ran over! Captain Michael Branch somehow managed to keep his cool despite all the mayhem occurring around him today.

The police captain added that he had personally driven past all of Plattsburgh’s polling places and found “no disorder, no crowds, nothing going on. Peace and quiet here in Plattsburgh.”

We only hope democracy survives this dark day.

Clipse Team Up With Rick Ross, Because Apparently ‘I’m Good’ Wasn’t Good Enough

The airy “I’m Good,” the second single off Clipse’s upcoming ‘Till the Casket Drops, had loud-and-clear radio appeal — soft synths! A Pharrell chorus! General positivity! — when it was released in mid-summer, and still failed to make a splash. But Clipse didn't give up on it: they’ve reworked the song, adding brand-new verses plus a guest spot from beardo Rick Ross. We don’t know if that’s enough to get America buying, but we’re into it, thanks to Pusha’s impressive ability to always find funny, overly specific new ways to talk about cocaine (“Walked out the kitchen, face white as Taylor Swift’s”) and Ross’s ability to do the same, but about how rich he is (“never sit so it’s caviar carryout”). Watch the video, but be warned: Ross’s man-boobs nearly slide out of his muscle tee.

Gasparino: ‘People Think Because I Go on TV and Scream a Lot I Don’t Have Half a Brain in My Head’

When the inimitable CNBC reporter Charlie Gasparino announced the title of his new crisis epic, The Sellout: How Three Decades of Wall Street Greed and Government Mismanagement Destroyed the Global Financial System, to his friend Teddy Forstmann, the financier was skeptical. "So what you're saying," Ted said, "is that somewhere along the line, Wall Street as an institution had some principles to sell out?" He had a point. Crisis-book connoisseur Moe Tkacik caught up with Gasparino as he obsessively checked his Amazon rankings today to find out more.

So, Charlie, I learned many things from your book, The Sellout, besides the thing about [former Bear Stearns CEO] Jimmy Cayne telling his friend his antacid bottle was actually filled with cocaine.
Jimmy Cayne actually just called me. He said he thought I was a fair reporter, and — this was somewhat of a shock — he said, "I just wanted to wish you the best of luck with your new book, I can't make your book party because I'm out of town." And I'm not kidding you, but then he said this: "I just wanted you to know I think you are the best reporter in the history of reporting." I'm seriously not kidding. Maybe he was stoned.

Well, as you state on page two, you "never found Jimmy Cayne's pot-smoking particularly newsworthy because he never seemed stoned at work" — even though he once tried to hand you "what looked like a joint" in the Bear Stearns elevator.
What I've always liked about Jimmy Cayne is that he was interesting in a refreshing way. John Thain is pretty boring. Stan O'Neal is just ruthless. Dick Fuld is just kind of nasty, Chuck Prince is a doofus, Bob Rubin is kind of out to lunch … but the culture of [Bear Stearns] has always been kind of interesting to cover.

Well, ironically, it seems like Bear Stearns produced more of the guys who "saw it coming," so to speak, than Goldman. John Paulson was a Bear guy, Kyle Bass was a Bear guy.
Well, right. That was another thing that struck me: We've had so many dry runs over the past three decades and no one learned his lesson. Over and over again, these guys have not had to face the consequences of their actions, and then they get amnesia. I'm not in that camp that thinks Goldman Sachs is the root of all evil, but they do crystallize the problem that's wrong with the bailout. At this point last year right now, they were seriously fearing for their own survival, and now they say they never needed the government assistance, and yet inexplicably they are still a commercial bank and able to borrow at the same rates of a bank with depositors and ATM machines and small-business clients and branches that employ bank tellers. How is that possible?
That Goldman's future was hanging in the balance was nothing but hot air promulgated on CNBC? Make no mistake: They were toast. Their business model was the same as everyone else, they were leveraged 30 to 1 like everyone else, so for them to say they didn't need it, that they were "perfectly hedged" —

Oh yeah, I love that "perfectly hedged" line. Like, if taxpayers hadn't coughed up that 13 billion dollars last fall they totally had a backup plan in the private sector.
Right, that is the absurdity of it. That they will say they were perfectly hedged, and yet have never had to elaborate on those hedges, like who they were with. By the way, everybody that blew up said they had hedges. And I'm sure they thought they did, but guess what, they blew up anyway, and if you blow up you didn't have hedges.

In other words, more banks need to blow up, is what you're saying.
Right. You know, most of us walk around every day constantly reminded of our own infallibility, because life is like that. But these guys are too cloistered, and no one holds them accountable. And so when you see these guys in New York City, and they walk into the restaurant and they think they own the restaurant, it's because they sort of do.

Right, like in your book, when [former Citigroup chief "risk" officer] Tom Maheras barks at the Vegas blackjack dealer, "Do you know who I am?," and you think to yourself, Who does he think he is, Rihanna or something? you are the sucker, because he actually does run the whole casino.
All these guys come back again. Here's a scoop: I hear Tom Maheras is starting a hedge fund, he's got investors, he's lined up $75 million.

It couldn't happen to a more loathsome guy! Or maybe it could … of all the guys you wrote about, who's the worst?
Stan O'Neal was the most sort of loathsome in a way. I know him, and he's better than what he turned out to be, the megalomaniac, dogmatic destroyer of the company. He purged all the bad guys, and some of them were bad, but then he replaced them with guys who turned out to be worse.

I found that fascinating, the way a grandson of a slave would try to change the provincial racist culture at Merrill Lynch by installing this crew of jet-setting international douchebags like that deadbeat dad with the $10 million bonus.
Well, Stan didn't think they were douchebags. He thought they were brilliant. A lot of these guys did get very good SAT scores. But the thing about Stan is that he thought he was different, but just like [Long Term Capital Management founder] John Meriwether, he got caught up in the risk-mentality groupthink and the Goldman envy and just replaced the old jerks with a new team of jerks.

The tone of your book is more reflective than most of the crisis books I've read, and I've read them all.
People think because I go on TV and scream a lot I don't have half a brain in my head, but I've been in this business a long time. And there's the fact that I rewrote it eight times.

Did you find it tough, starting out in business journalism, to get people to talk to you without being deferential?
I think the last guy who really intimidated me in a reporting situation was the president of the Cortland County school board [for Newsday]. Most of these guys are cowards. Sometimes people will get mad about something I reported, mostly Lehman guys, and they'll confront me outside a restaurant, but it's always in packs; there will be five of them or six of them and it's me. At first you're nice, because these people are unemployed and that's terrible, but if they don't let up, that's when you just have to tell them to point blank go fuck themselves.

In any case, some of [my sources] are good friends, but I'm not one of them, you'll see at my party. [Blackrock CEO] Larry Fink will be there, and maybe [Morgan Stanley CEO] John Mack will show up, but I'm not gonna be holding hands with fuckin' [JPMorgan CEO] Jamie Dimon or anything like that.

Alec Baldwin Not Responsible For Daughter’s Lil Wayne Cake

Last week, an amazing photo of a Lil Wayne-shaped cake from Ireland Baldwin's 14th birthday surfaced, impressing Vulture and the rest of the Internet. We applauded Alec's excellent fathering, but, as it turns out, he had nothing to do with it. "A Little Wayne what?" he said when we asked him about it at last night's This is Tisch! Gala to benefit the Tisch School of the Arts at Frederick P. Rose Hall. We asked a second time. "No, I didn’t [get it for her]. I don’t know where that came from. But I will take that idea. I will give here a Little Wayne cake for her next birthday." Does he listen to Lil Wayne? we inquired. "No, no, no, no," he told us. "I never listen to popular music, hardly at all." We guess Kim Basinger's the Weezy fan.

Maybe what the world needs more of, then, are not new laws to protect supposedly fragile women from eating disorders, but better photographers.

Ray Kelly, News Junkie, Surfs the Internet in His Car

Ray Kelly is a technology junkie. New York’s police Commissioner uses a Kindle for a “significant part” of his daily reading. “I read the newspapers, every newspaper, in the morning, early on,” Kelly told us at the Library Lions gala last night. He also reads online. “In my car, too, with the Internet, we’re able to do that,” he said. How does one read the Internet in one’s car? “We have a terminal in the car. So I do a lot of reading,” Kelly replied. Of course. Let's hope he has a driver, because surfing the web while driving has got to be as distracting as texting is.

1. Music Again: The preview starts off sounding very Mika-ish, which is A-OK by us, as we love Mika. It then drifts into Trans-Siberian Orchestra territory, another totally great thing in our eyes. It’s outlandish and theatery, definitely, which is exactly why we are on the edge of our seats for the album release.

2. For Your Entertainment: IT GREW ON ME, OK. I still haven’t plunked down the $1.29 to download it, but can almost guarantee that when I buy the entire album, I will come full circle to love it. And drunk in a club? Chile, you best back up about 10 feet cause my b’s are gonna fly out. (Breasts, no balls, I don’t think.)

3. Whataya Want From Me: A little too soft rock for my tastes, but will definitely appeal to your average-middle-of-the-road-tasted American Idol fans.

4. Strut: Simple and loving it. Will listen to it while I serve people on Broadway. (Literally, with my feet. I will serve them dinner with my feet while I walk.)

ADAM LAMBERT PORTRAIT 1235. Soaked: Uh oh, the first slow song. My thoughts?…. *SWOON* Immediately. I just felt my first Lambert Love Pangs in months. Of course, this would be the leftover Muse song. And the fact that it sounds like the number one hit in Paraguay is exactly why I love it so deeply. Will no doubt play this on repeat while Calgon kidnaps me out of my bubble bath.

6. Sure Fire Winners: Kinda sounds like video game background music. Not my favorite, but I’m not offended by it either.

7. A Loaded Smile: Very “Dreamweaver”-ish. Really shows off Adam’s vocal skills and his possible childhood castration.

8. If I Had You: ATTENTION THE ENTIRE COUNTRY OF ROMANIA: Your next #1 club his is about to be released. This has exactly the right amount of Eastern European flare to keep me interested.

9. Pick U Up: It’s so hard to tell how much you can like a song with only 30 seconds. That being said, I did enjoy this one. I want to win The World Cup while listening to this. (Though it’s always been a dream of mine…)

10. Fever: Jim Cantiello over at MTV.com was disappointed at the “Idol” production quality of this song, and I have to agree.

11. Sleepwalker: This songs sounds like something Roxette would have released back in the 90s. In other words, we’re thinking it might be our favorite track on the entire album.

12. Aftermath: We’re neither here nor there on this one. Will wait for the album to fully judge, though this initial opinion is not a great sign.

13. Broken Open: Uhmuhguhhhhhd this song is like aural sex. It’s liquidy and sensual and like a bath bead exploding with notes all over our bodies. It’s like a buttery music massage. Yeah, we like it.

14. Time For Miracles (bonus track): So yeah.. we listen to this on our Ipod.. more than necessary.. SO WHAT? Love it.

As per usual, your turn! Obviously 99 percent of you will love it, but still, let us know your favorite track so far.

Carter Glatt Would Already Be a Mogul If It Weren’t for the ‘Kid Factor’

Carter Glatt, a 16-year-old junior at Horace Mann whose family owns a home in Southampton, had the brilliant idea of coming up with a Hollywood-esque Star Map for the Hamptons, to help visitors locate the hedgerow-encircled homes of celebrities like Christie Brinkley and Howard Stern. But his business hasn't quite taken off, because store owners in the Hamptons, beholden to their celebrity clients, have refused to carry it. Also, as Carter told The New Yorker, he suspects they are prejudiced against him.

“There is definitely a kid factor,” Glatt said. “No one told me, ‘You know, you’re sixteen, I can’t do this.’ But I did get that kind of vibe from some people.”

Happily, it's the 21st century, so instead of being forced out of business by the Establishment like he might have been in the past, Carter was able to make his product available the same place cheap porn and offshore gambling are traded: online.

Si Newhouse's 'Falling' Fortune [Fire Sale]

146978It's been a brutal few weeks at Condé Nast as the magazine giant has shut down four magazines and slashed hundreds of jobs. The pain, however, isn't limited to the rank and file. A prized piece of art from the collection of Condé Nast chairman Si Newhouse goes up for auction tomorrow at Sotheby's and despite the fact he stands to lose much as $10 million by selling now at the market abyss, Newhouse has opted to try and unload the piece anyway. Desperate times call for desperate measures, it seems.

The work in question is a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti entitled "L'Homme Qui Chavire." The official estimate for the 1950 work, per Sotheby's, is $8-12 million. But what's telling is that the media mogul and voracious art collector is selling it at all, considering he reportedly paid "in excess of $20 million" for the sculpture several years ago.

According to Art Market Monitor, Newhouse twice tried to sell the sculpture privately, first for $20 million and again for $16 million. No interested buyers came forward, however, so presumably Newhouse decided to bite the bullet and take his chances at auction. Whether Newhouse's very determined effort to part ways with the work is because he needs to liquidate some of his holdings and raise cash is purely speculation, of course. Although the name of the sculpture—and what it signifies—may not sit well with Newhouse as he watches his media empire contract. In French, "L'Homme Qui Chavire" translates as the "falling man," although the verb is also used to denote someone who is "capsizing" or "drowning."

If you're interested, you'll find a video clip below featuring Simon Shaw, Sotheby's head of modern art, as he describes the Giacometti sculpture in more detail. Just in case you're looking to add something special to your art collection and potentially save another Condé Nast magazine from going under in the process.

Son of Escada Founder Could Bail Out Label for $118.2 Million

The son of Escada's founder is mounting a plan with other investors to bail out the label, which filed for bankruptcy in August. Their offer totals $118.2 million, which is about $18 million more than the cost of bailing out Christian Lacroix. Sven Ley partnered with ex-Gucci head Giacomo Santucci and Italy's Borletti Group on the bid. Under their rescue plan, Santucci would assume the role of chief executive. Four other bidders are still in the running, and a winner could be decided within days. [Reuters]

VIDEO HITS ONE: Weezer Performs With Kenny G In Ongoing Effort To Just Be The Internet

Here’s a video of Weezer performing with Kenny G.

It’s not bad, but seriously, is Weezer even a band anymore or just a series of viral videos intended to virally exist and virally be viral? They’re within a month of just getting sucked into the internet like The Lawnmower Man and just existing in hyperspace forever. Which would be an improvement over Make Believe.

Some of Christian Siriano’s Holiday Collection for Payless Is Now Available

Christian Siriano's new holiday collection of accessories and shoes for Payless just popped up online. This season's lineup includes four new handbag styles, which aren't available yet according to the Payless site. However, the six new shoe styles are already available for purchase, with prices ranging from $29.99 to $49.99. Also included in the collection is a pair of black patent peep-toe boots with a three-and-a-half-inch cone heel. Ironically, at $49.99, they may be the least expensive-looking of the bunch, but everyone defines "fierce" in different ways.

Holiday Tips Head South [Recession]

If your doorman or hair stylist look a little grumpy today, it may because they just found out that in lieu of the cash they normally receive from you for Christmas, they're going to be getting a jar of homemade jam instead. According to a new poll, 26 percent of Americans say they planned to spend less on tips than they did last year, although some said they planned to make up the difference (or try to, at least!) by distributing homemade gifts and foodstuffs. New York Post Continues To Disappoint With ‘09 World Series Headlines

Regardless of who you’re rooting for in this year’s World Series, or your opinion of the actual gameplay itself, I think Phillies fans, Yankees fans, and just general fans of terrible, judgmental puns can agree on one thing: The New York Post’s headlines for this Series (despite my high expectations) have been SORELY disappointing:

NY Post World Series Headlines

Where are the painful puns? Where’s the unsubstantiated panic? Where’s the overblown, random judgment of everyone?

The Yankees just lost Game 5 and instead of “2004 ALL OVER AGAIN” doom, today’s cover just says “It’s all good, now they can win the Series at home!”

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THE NEW YORK POST?????

They better be saving one DAMN good angry pun headline for the Series finale… And it BETTER have seven uncensored F-words and a picture of A-Rod’s penis in it somehow…

Happy Birthday, Anna Wintour!

Card specially commissioned by artist Christopher Sauvé.

Dearest Anna,

We've had our ups and downs this past year. But as you turn 60 today, you remain a continued source of inspiration! In the past year, you became a movie star, continued your crusade to let women everywhere know it's okay to wear the same thing twice in public, and exhibited fierce — but not too fierce — diva behavior at every chance (at least in restaurants). You're just the kind of diva boss lady we hope to be one day! But also, you weren't afraid to let your hair down every now and then. Oh, and you got Michelle Obama on the cover of Vogue! And in no way is that less special now that she's also been on the covers of Prevention, Glamour, and a bunch of other magazines. Mostly because on your cover, she wasn't wearing a giant waist belt. But this isn't about her — today is your day. Over here we celebrate birthdays with cupcakes and singing and getting irresponsibly drunk after — possibly during — work. And that is why we need a woman like you — who would do none of those things — in our lives.

Please accept this blogcard, which we specially commissioned from artist Christopher Sauvé, just for you. Happy birthday!

xx

Bernie Kerik Has a Big Decision Ahead of Him [Plea Bargains]

146974

Bernie Kerik is no longer crazy, apparently. After displaying behavior that "put him at risk" and spending 10 days in a psychiatric facility, New York's former police commissioner was allowed to return to a regular prison cell at the Westchester County Jail yesterday.

But he might just be certifiable if he doesn't if doesn't take the plea bargain that's been offered to him by prosecutors. Under the terms of the deal, the three separate federal cases against him would be rolled into one and he'd serve less than three years in prison. Or he could take his chances, try to win at all three trials, and face the possibility of spending the next 20 years in jail.

Here's hoping he chooses the former. If he starts serving his sentence immediately, he'll be a free man just in time to campaign by Rudy Giuliani's side during the 2012 election cycle!

Vogue’s Ex-Events Planner Heads to Lincoln Center

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff.

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff used to plan the Met Gala as Vogue's director of special events. She left that post in June, and Lincoln Center just scooped her up to help them figure out how on earth to make Fashion Week work when it commences in their backyard instead of Bryant Park for the first time in September 2010. Her experience with "logistically complex" events is just what they need. Hopefully she introduces dramatic floral arrangements and zebra carpeting. Oh, and Starbucks as a coffee sponsor. [FWD]

TRAILER MIX: Finally, Every Movie Ever… In Persia

The Prince of Persia is a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal who plays a Prince in Persia. Pretty self-explanny, right? WRONG. Because this movie happens to be produced by the Sorcerer’s Explosion Apprentice himself, Jerry Bruckheimer. The guy has produced every major action flick for the past 100 or so years, including, we think, this one.

So we were excited to hear that the trailer for Gyllenhaal’s first big action film in a long while was out. But watching it, something looked familiar. Wait, no, EVERYTHING LOOKED FAMILIAR. That’s because The Prince of Persia has managed to incorporate imagery or special effects or similar looking shots from the following list of films:

  • The Dark Knight
  • Spiderman 3
  • Do You Remember The TimesMichael Jackson
  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
  • The Bourne Supremacy
  • Wild Wild West
  • Every Movie The Rock Has Ever Starred In
  • Probably Tomb Raider (we haven’t seen it, but it’s a hunch)
  • For sure some gay porn

ALL SET IN PERSIA. Watch the trailer and tell us — Did we leave any of the movies this movie copied from out?

Stephen Colbert Sponsors U.S. Speedskating Team In Biggest Thing To Happen To Speedskating Since Invention Of Speedskating

Stephen Colbert SpeedskatingIn the best idea to ever happen to the sport of speedskating, and possibly the sport of ever, Stephen Colbert’s Colbert Nation will be the official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Speedskating team for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. Colbert Nation members are being encouraged to donate to the U.S. team, and in exchange, the team will wear “Colbert Nation” logos on their uniforms:

“On their enormous, billboard thighs, it will say, ‘Colbert Nation,”‘ Colbert said in an interview before Monday evening’s taping. “Be looking for that logo as it comes around the final turn. It will be easy to see because it will be in first place…”

“My character sees the Olympics as war, but nobody gets hurt,” Colbert said. “It’s a way to peacefully figure out who has got the top country.”

“It still tragically involves a lot of Canadians,” the comedian said. “It’s kind of unseemly how many Canadians I’m going to have to be dealing with.”

I was going to write that it’s the biggest thing to happen to speedskating since [BLANK], but couldn’t even think of a stock, go-to speedskating thing to complete that lazy joke. Plus I’m sure this idea is actually better than whatever that sentence-completing thing would have been.

Plus when Colbert Nation throws its weight behind something, that thing wins, with no exceptions. Just ask Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle.
