Raat Gayi Baat Gayi wins Best Film award at SAIFF 2009Click above for more stills Pritish Nandy Communications' (PNC) forthcoming film 'Raat Gayi Baat Gayi' recently won the Best Film Award at HBO's New York South Asian International Film Festival, 2009. The film premiered at the festival and was screened in the Competition category. Director Saurabh Shukla and actor Rajat Kapoor were present to receive the award. The South Asian International Film Festival is one of the most exciting events on New York's cultural calendar and film makers from all over the world; compete to be a part of it. "It is a wonderful moment for the film, PNC and me", said Saurabh Shukla, "This award is a fabulous recognition of Raat Gayi Baat Gayi and it shows the growing reach and acceptance of Indian feature films worldwide". Producer Pritish Nandy adds, "This affirms our faith in the fact that some of the best films currently being made in India are by directors and actors who are bucking the trend. We, as producers, love to back such films. We know where true excellence lies. Raat Gayi Baat Gayi, which releases in theatres, next month, is comedy at its sharpest and finest.' Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is an outrageous comedy that starts with a night of heavy drinking and partying amongst 3 married couples. The morning after dawns with zero memory, the possibility of a one night stand, a missing mobile number and one gorgeous woman. The film stars Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Neha Dhupia, Dalip Tahil, Iravati Harshe Mayadev, Anu Menon, Navnit Nishaan and Ranvir Shorey in lead roles. The film has music by Ankur Tewari, is written by Rajat Kapoor and directed by Saurabh Shukla.Source: Indiafm.com News | 4 Nov 2009 | 7:02 am "The characters in APKGK are serious but audiences will see them in a funny way" - RanbirMost of his movies, be it Saawariya, Wake Up Sid or his Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani which releases tomorrow worldwide, hardly need the coverage as he's one of the few stars whose name all but guarantees a strong opening weekend: Ranbir Kapoor. He has got everything synonymous to the Pali Hill boys of Bandra and being one himself, he quotes, "Pali Hill boys rock". With his soulful dark eyes and his chiselled good looks, he cuts a very dashing image as he resumes the sexiness he possesses to charm the opposite sex in APKGK. Let's face it; Ranbir Kapoor's face is now being stapled over the walls of teenage girls across India. They are falling in love with him; some girls want to get married to him while the others want to share their joys and sorrows with him. Some are looking for the exact qualities of Ranbir in her man while some think he is a part of their history lessons. Believe it or not, Ranbir Kapoor is a part of Indian culture now, and if that's an understatement, I don't know. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel talks to the man of the month, the man behind the mask and the man of the year, Ranbir Kapoor about his journey from waking up to falling in love, his midas touch, his mature man image, his flirtatious days in school, his Pali Hill days, the talented Katrina Kaif, the change in Indian cinema which is just around the corner and his wish to see the Oscar selected Harishchandrachi Factory. From waking up to falling in love. How's your journey going? Well, it may sound spooky but I have shot for both the films simultaneously, Wake Up Sid and APKGK. Both have been extremely different from each other. Wake Up Sid did some really good stuff for me post its release and I hope that this good stuff continues. Katrina is known for her midas touch she has been giving to all her films. Now with you on board, I'm sure it's going to be a golden affair Wow! Thank you so much. But honestly, I don't believe in Midas touch, luck and all. We just work hard on films, that's all. We work hard because we are very passionate about cinema. We just need the appreciation flowing by the audiences. The characters in the film are serious, and when they are in a serious problem, the audience will see them in a funny way In your growing up years, how much has comedy as a genre changed for you as a viewer? As far as comedy genres are concerned, no film can beat Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Andaz Apna Apna. They are the baap of all comic films in India. But I don't think that APKGK is a rom-com. Actually, it's a com-rom. It's got more comedy and yes, there is an underlying love story in the film. Every thing done in APKGK is done in a comic way. The characters in the film are serious, and when they are in a serious problem, the audience will see them in a funny way. For them, it is serious but for it's viewers it is pure comedy. Click above for more movie stills What about Raj Kumar Santoshi? After making Andaz Apna Apna, does he still have the same funny bone? Raj Kumar Santoshi has really excelled in every genre. He has tried a movie with every subject. I was enthusiastic to work with Tips and Raj Kumar Santoshi because I loved the story of the film. I was laughing my a** off when I was hearing it. It's strange but what I heard in the narration was exactly what was projected on the screen. Sometimes movies don't turn out exactly the way you hear them. But Raj-ji has done just that. He stuck to his narration, scenes just followed. Your father quotes, 'Ranbir is mature now'. Are you? Honestly, my father is not very kind with the words he says and he is really a miser with voice in trying to appreciate something and he was proud of me post Wake Up Sid too. That feels good because he is my biggest critic. He has always called a spade a spade. If he appreciates something that I've done, it truly feels special. He hasn't seen the final cut of APKGK but I am dying to look forward to his criticism or his praise in it. I was always having crushes on teachers and my mothers' young friends who used to wear short clothes Like your earlier film, is APKGK targeted to the youth again? Not really. This film is targeted to the family audience. It's not a crude comedy and it's not a comedy which only the youngsters will enjoy or only parents will enjoy. You'll get the exact same reaction from the grandparents all the way down to their kids. We've made a film that caters to a larger audience than a film like Wake Up Sid. Pali Hill boys are the biggest flirts in Mumbai. That's what they say. How 'ajab' was your way of impressing the chics back then? Well, my infatuation started way back in junior school. I was always having crushes on teachers and my mothers' young friends who used to wear short clothes. I realised women very early in my life. I don't know if I'm a flirt, I don't know if I'm charming enough or I don't know if I'm really shy when it comes to women. But I'm not so bad when it comes to appreciating beauty and having crushes on women. Pali Hill boys rock! How do you define a strange love? If it is to do with the film, I'd call it an ajab angle. Love is strange because it makes you do strange things. Do you think Katrina is cast in films because of her beauty and charm or is she really talented? I think Katrina is cast in her films only for the kind of talent she is, the kind of hard work she brings in to her films, the kind of positivity she brings in too is infectious. Today APKGK is hot because it has a lot to do with Katrina Kaif. She has a huge fan following. She didn't know a word of Hindi language and today she is one of the biggest film stars of our country. That is commendable and we shouldn't belittle her by saying that she only gets work because of her looks. What have you learnt by being a son to Darshan Jariwala? That he is a good father (laughs). You get to learn everyday working with talented people like Darshan Jariwala. We youngsters learn the kind of dedication they have, the kind of craft they possess, the kind of passion they have and the kind of actors they are. They aren't greedy, they'll do their job and they are patient. I hope I at least have half of their talent when I reach their age. Katrina is cast in her films only for the kind of talent she is, the kind of hard work she brings in to her films, the kind of positivity she brings in too is infectious Every generation makes way to another. The genres being made now and the films that are being thought upon are somehow liked more by the today's generation. Is change around the corner? I really do believe in the kind of change we can bring to Indian cinema. All we can do is bring good stories, be a part of good films, etc. APKGK isn't just targeting the youth, as I said earlier. Everybody can see it. But as long as you make a film with heart and with a lot of conviction, it'll work. The only thing is that your story has to be honest. We do not want to restrict ourselves to target a certain mass or class of people in the films we make because films is an expensive medium in which you have to recover costs. I don't think the youth can fill the theatres for a long period of time. Yes, they do bring in the power and the excitement and the fan following. Have you seen the Oscar selected movie from India - Harishchandrachi Factory? No, I haven't but I am dying to see it. I really have no time right now as I'm shooting. But I would love to see it as soon as possible. I have been hearing a lot about the film and that it deserves an Oscar. My best wishes to Harishchandrachi Factory.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 4 Nov 2009 | 6:06 am The MAMI DiariesIt's a Mumbai I have never seen, as filmmakers and enthusiasts from nooks and crannies of India converge onto screens across Mumbai for the 11th MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. What started as a star-studded, red-carpet affair has emerged, over the last week, as a cornucopia of some excellent Indian & world cinema, animated cinematic conversations, film premieres and cocktails and some serious celebrity spotting. I can't show the movies, but if you missed all the action, here's a lowdown of the 11th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF): The festival started on a high note with Shashi Kapoor receiving, in person, the life-time achievement award conferred by MAMI. Tinsel town's most famous faces came out in large numbers for the Indian premiere of Steven Soderberg's The Informant, and milled around when the opening ceremony started late. Besides showcasing the best and latest of world cinema, MFF provided a platform to regional Indian cinema, notably two Konkani films - AB Corp's Vihir (The Well) and NFDC's The Man Beyond The Bridge. Both films are doing rounds of the international film festival circuit, will be released theatrically in India and had their very own press-cons at MFF. Vihir's director Umersh Kulkarni thought out loud, "It depends on how you judge the success of a film - by the number of people who watch the film or how deeply the film affects those who watch it." The National Film Development Corporation was for years the lodestar for independent cinema in India, and funded and produced classics like Pather Panchali and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. But the corporation remained largely inactive in the recent past. In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, NFDC Managing Director Neena Gupta cleared the air, "We produced eight films in the past year. NFDC has a cultural mandate to promote diverse and good cinema and will continue doing so, notwithstanding the commercial considerations." In good news for cinema fans, the corp. is also doing film restoration work on its huge catalogue and might come out with DVDs, very soon. A film festival in Mumbai cannot be celebrity-free, but MFF gave movie-lovers an opportunity to catch up with their favorite actors/writers and have some serious cinematic discussions. Spotted were Prem Soni, Kamlesh Pandey, Mohan Agashe, Rema Lagoo, Anu Agarwal, among others. Antichrist was unarguably the most scandalous film in the festival because of a surfeit of on-screen sex, violence and gore. All of the film's shows ran full theatre, with people crowding the stairs. Other films which were well received by the audience were Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank and Shahram Alidi's Whispers with the Wind. Many in the audience felt that being able to watch legendary Greek film maker Theo Angelopoulos' retrospective on the big screen was quite a fortune, as the 35mm prints of his films are very rare. Angelopoulos' films are really enjoyable because of their memorable characters and the unique visual treatment. Native student talent was found in action at MFF in the form of an acting diploma film from FTII, Amit Dutta's The Man's Woman And Other Stories, three short films put together, shot on a shoe-string budget. The film proves that quality cinema can be made in India on very low budgets. Moreover, the fest also had a competition of short films made by college students of Mumbai, an encouraging step for budding film makers. There's always a good audience and a not-so-good audience. Some people were really serious about what they had come to watch, others were not really exposed to films. In one of most engaging moments of the film, suddenly you would hear people laughing; reacting the way the film maker would not have wanted them to react. They were not watching the film for what it is, but just like that. Point in case: Antchrist is a very sensitive film, the sex and gore really shakes you up and makes you wonder. But if you do not watch it in that perspective and just as on-screen erotica or gore, then it just shows you are an amateur viewer. Yet the fact that people came to watch such films, is a big deal, because that means they are forcing themselves to watch something they have not been exposed to before. A step towards the better or as an avid film student told me, "a week full of films for a thousand bucks, is a sweet deal!"Source: Indiafm.com Features | 4 Nov 2009 | 6:02 am Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin to host Oscars

Vande Mataram is part of Bankimchandra Chatterjee's novel Anand Math. All the villains in this novel are Muslims. Ultimately, the Muslims lose and the novelist feels happy that the Britishers have come to save us from these so-called 'barbaric' Muslims. This is the song of the militant sadhus in this novel. There were two stanzas of strong religiosity in this song. When talks arose of making Vande Mataram a national anthem, it was pointed out by rational elements that the novel was anti-Muslim. The Congress decided to take out the two rabidly religious stanzas and the rest of the song was retained. The controversy ended there. What is this new resistance? The objection is redundant. You don't want to sing Vande Mataram? Don't! Who is forcing you? I sing it. I don't see it as objectionable. If you do, don't sing it. Why do you insist on bringing such irrelevant matters centre stage? It's a non-issue and unnecessarily provocative. I've written songs with Vande Mataram in them. I used the term Vande Mataram in Priyadarshan's Saza-e-Kala Pani. Then I used the term for a song in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and finally for a song that's used at the military academy at Dehra Doon. Please don't make an issue out of a non-issue. These are non-entities.''Source: Indiafm.com Features | 4 Nov 2009 | 3:37 am There should be no film censorship: Anurag KashyapBollywood director Anurag Kashyap feels there should be no film censorship at all.Source: Entertainment News | 4 Nov 2009 | 3:24 am Rakeysh to make Mirza Sahiban next; also plans to release new version of Delhi 6The script for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's next film is almost done. So I'd rather wait until the script is finished before casting." Rakeysh showed the new-cut version of Delhi 6 at the Venice Film Festival on September 9. "The kind of reception I got in a 1600-seater theatre, was unexpected. It was meant to be only one screening. But they suddenly decided to screen the film on the closing day of the Festival which is very prestigious." Source: Entertainment - Google News | 3 Nov 2009 | 6:43 am Idea Cellular's digital campaign: Making of Zac JuniorIdea Cellular's 'Walk When You Talk' Campaign was a successful campaign in terms of its reach and recall. Taking this success to the next level the advertisers thought of an online campaign - 'Zac Junior', to target the youth and other net savvy target group. Zac Junior is an animated character created by Cell 18 which has a popular application on Facebook and Idea Cellular website, where users can make Zac walk when he talks. Zac embodies the youth of India; a cool dude, who loves junk food and hanging around and lazing. With this campaign, advertisers engage viewers, trying to get them to make Zac walk, while talking. Cell 18 created the 3D animated character walking in different scenarios - the park, the countryside, at night and in the gym, on a treadmill. Still, Ajay Devgn has made a definite place for himself with two decades of hard work and a line up of films that could make majority of actors nervous. Starting off his career as an action hero with multiple hits like Phool Aur Kaante, Jigar, Divyashakti and Vijaypath, Ajay is today known as one of the few versatile actors that we have in the industry today. "Yes, in a way I am lucky that I can do action, comedy, drama or an emotional film. This is what keeps me going. Working in a similar genre for years can't really work for you all the time. You have to bring in a change in your approach towards making films and this is what I strive for. I know for sure that not many actors and stars are capable of being versatile today. This way, I am blessed", says Ajay whose London Dreams has seen a steady progress at the box office ever since it's opening. With films like All The Best, London Dreams, Rajneeti, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, Priyadarshan's next, Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge, Toonpur Ka Superhero and a sequel to Golmaal or All The Best in his kitty, his statement does make sense. After all, the man is enjoying his status as an actor who can work in movies belonging to diverse genres. Coming back to London Dreams, with critic reviews going in the favour of the film and audiences too giving a thumbs-up to this Vipul Shah venture, it is now Ajay's second film in quick succession that has brought smiles back for the industry. From a slapstick comedy All The Best, was it the confidence of getting into a different kind of 'home territory' with an intense role in the offering that made him go for London Dreams? "I really don't know what exactly is like being in a 'home territory'", smiles Ajay, "I knew for sure that London Dreams is a kind of an intense film and since I have done quite a few successful films with a similar requirement in the past, perhaps audiences were expecting me to do well again. But yes, London Dreams did bring in a different dimension of intensity." Can he elaborate on this? "See, every film has a different dimension regardless of the genre that it belongs to. Every script has its own dimension and every actor or a director looks at it in a different way. Vipul and I envisaged the character of Arjun and his placement in London Dreams in a particular way and this is what is reflected on screen", he explains. What was the kind of vision that he and his friend/director Rohit Shetty had when it came to making All The Best? It was pretty much a scary Friday leading to stable weekdays for the comic entertainer. Had he actually bargained for that over the Diwali weekend? "Pretty much so", promptly replies Ajay, "We were very much prepared that All The Best would take a slow start on the day of it's release. Even the distributors assured us that they weren't worried since family films take time to find their share of audiences. Moreover, this being a Diwali weekend, masses were expected to drop in once the festivities were through. That's what exactly happened in case of All The Best and results are there for all to see." Another factor working in the favour of the film was unanimously good reviews that the film fetched. "Yes, that really helped though we were quite sure about this", says Ajay, "We knew that we had a decent film that catered to all kind of audiences. Comedies do tend to bring in some double meaning dialogues but there wasn't anything like that in case of All The Best. We were confident that our effort would be appreciated." No wonder, his association with Rohit Shetty is being labelled as a reliable actor-director 'jodi'. Do we see a modern day replacement of Priyadarshan in Rohit here? "Hey, don't compare him with anybody", Ajay is quick to comment, "Yes, Rohit has a knack of comedy and that reflects in his work. Success of films like All The Best, Golmaal Returns and Golmaal is a testimony to that. Moreover, he also has a contemporary bent of mind which further gives him an edge. However, it would be unfair to compare him with anyone. Let his work talks for itself." Meanwhile, what happens to his own directorial outing? It has been quite some time since U Me Aur Hum came and industry is waiting for him to announce his next. "I am still working on my next film", says Ajay, "People do ask me a question that since I started with an action film (Phool Aur Kaante), would I be directing an action film next? Well, I am yet to lock on it and would be making an announcement at a later stage."Source: Indiafm.com Features | 3 Nov 2009 | 5:41 am Freida Pinto supports Nanhi KaliFreida Pinto of the Slumdog Millionaire fame has etched a name in the global forum.
