Eek! Sasha and Malia Aren't Vaccinated from H1N1

In a piece of anxiety inducing news, Fox News reports that Sasha and Malia Obama haven't been vaccinated against swine flu. The CDC recommends that children 6 months through 18 years old receive the vaccination but a shortage has resulted in only those with chronic medical conditions getting it. Predictably, there's a conspiracy buried here, according to the people who allege those kinds of things. But pardon us if we're concerned for the girls. With sneezy Chuck Todd always hanging around, you can never be too safe. [Row 2, Seat 4]

Ron Livingston Is a Schmuck

King Schmuck; Everyone's favorite disgruntled office drone Ron Livingston has joined Dinner for Schmucks, the Jay Roach directed comedy that's already got Steve Carell and Paul Rudd on board. The movie is an adaptation of a French flick called Le diner de cons. It revolves around a group of friends who have a weekly dinner where each invites the stupidest person he can find. It's unclear if Livingston will play an idiot or a guy who makes fun of idiots, but he's got so much range he could he could play either. Take that Peter O'Toole. [Variety]

Unknown Blonde Girls: January Jones and Diane Kruger will star alongside Liam Neeson in Unknown White Male, the story of a man who wakes up from a coma to find that someone else has assumed his identity. No one believes him, including his wife (Jones), so he teams up with a Berlin taxi driver (Kruger) to help convince her. And now we're convinced, January Jones only likes older men. [Variety]

Still In Treatment: HBO has scored a victory for the emotionally damaged by picking up In Treatment for a third season. Next season will be written from scratch because the Israeli series that it's based on only ran for two seasons. Guess Gabriel Byrne's Dr. Paul Weston is not making much progress. Maybe because he's Satan? [THR]

Harmonzing: TNT continues to make its name as the place where recognizable out-of-work actresses head for headlining series (see: Sedgwick, Kyra; Hunter, Holly; and Pinkett Smith, Jada) with the addition of Rizzoli, set to star Angie Harmon. The Law and Order and Women's Murder Club alum's show will focus on--surprise!--crime. [Variety]

Cosby 2.0 NBC is developing two new series: a drama called Nola Rising and a comedy, Ordinary People. In Nola Rising, a PI and an ex-con (who can be inhabited by ghosts) help the citizens--and ghosts--of New Orleans with their problems. Ordinary People focuses on a twenty-something career couple with four kids. It's promising--an African-American-focused comedy described as Mad About You meets The Cosby Show. And as long as they find a way to cast Bobb'e J. Thompson, this thing's going to be a hit. [THR]

Second Helping: Watching Robin survive the chopping block week after week on Top Chef strictly on the basis of a good fruit crisp, it's no surprise that the franchise is expanding again to include Top Chef: Just Desserts, casting this week to air sometime in 2010. The thought of jiggly pastry chefs slinging meringue makes us giddy, but knowing that they'll somehow incorporate pork belly ice cream does not. [Variety]

NYPD Cars Are Ready To Rumble

If you're walking down the street this week and hear a cop car coming, you might just feel it too. That's "The Rumbler." Some 25 police cars have already been fitted with the device, which gives off a low-frequency sound wave producing vibrations that can be felt 200 feet away. The idea is to give pedestrians and hearing-impaired (or volume enhanced) drivers another way to figure out that cop cars will run them over if they don't move. About 100 more rumblers will be installed tomorrow as police spend the next week making jokes about the vibrators in their cars. [NY1]

Paul Haggis Ditches Scientology

After 35 years as a member of the Church of Scientology, Paul Haggis is calling it quits. In a badass letter to Scientology’s national spokesman Tommy Davis (who hates Martin Bashir), the filmmaker lays out the reasons why.

It all started when a San Diego church publicly supported Prop 8. Haggis asked Davis to denounce its actions but Davis never went through with it. Then the already-pissed Haggis read an interview in which Davis denied Scientology's practice of "disconnection" (forcing members to cut off communication with loved ones who oppose Scientology). But Haggis knew disconnection first-hand. His wife was forced to cut ties with her parents. The last straw came when Haggis read about the smear tactics Scientology used against its former members. That's when he knew it was time to go.

And so, after writing this letter, I am fully aware that some of my friends may choose to no longer associate with me, or in some cases work with me. I will always take their calls, as I always took yours. However, I have finally come to the conclusion that I can no longer be a part of this group. Frankly, I had to look no further than your refusal to denounce the church’s anti-gay stance, and the indefensible actions, and inactions, of those who condone this behavior within the organization. I am only ashamed that I waited this many months to act. I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology.

Sincerely, Paul Haggis

If we may pass on a suggestion Paul: Learn to sleep with your eyes open.

The timing of Obama's invitation is a tad suspect. The Washington press corps has criticized him over the past week for his frattiness, from the all-dudes golf outings to the all-bros basketball games. Then the Times ran an article today titled "Man’s World at White House? No Harm, No Foul, Aides Say," that called Obama a "First Guy's Guy." "Since being elected, he has demonstrated an encyclopedic knowledge of college hoops on ESPN, indulged a craving for weekend golf, expressed a preference for adopting a 'big rambunctious dog' over a 'girlie dog' and hoisted beer in a peacemaking effort."

So yeah, maybe Barack is kind of the Bro-in-Chief. But today is about Melody Barnes, who accomplished an unprecedented feat—she broke through the grass ceiling.

The Day The Comedy Died

Jeff Dunham, the ventriloquist/stand-up comedian who makes Carlos Mencia look funny, is now the proud owner of Comedy Central's record for the most-watched series premiere. The Jeff Dunham Show premiered on Thursday to an impressive 5.3 million viewers (7.9 million when you count those who watched the replay). This isn't much of a surprise; Dunham's Christmas special from last year holds the record for the most-watched broadcast in Comedy Central's history. There are a lot of things that could be said about Dunham's offensive, broad, terribly unfunny humor, and lucky for us, Videogum said them.

Gingrich Mulling Run for President

In an interview with C-SPAN today, Newt Gingrich said he just might run for president, as long as "real America" wants him to.

"Callista and I are going to think about this in February 2011. And we are going to reach out to all of our friends around the country. And we'll decide, if there's a requirement as citizens that we run, I suspect we probably will. And if there's not a requirement, if other people have filled the vacuum, I suspect we won't."

When he finally does decide, he'll probably Tweet the announcement.

Kenny Ortega Tells Paramount It Can't Fire Him From Directing Footloose Because He Already Quit

Back in March, Zac Efron dropped out of the upcoming Footloose remake because he was afraid of being typecast as a cute song-and-dance type (too late!). Now the film's director is shuffling away from the project too. Kenny Ortega, who choreographed Dirty Dancing and directed all three High School Musicals, was fighting with Paramount over the budget (he wanted $30 million; the studio wants $25 million) and tone (he wanted cute and dance-y; the studio wants edgy and dramatic). So he decided to move on from Footloose and Paramount decided to bring in Robert Rodriguez.

Madoff Associate Found Dead in Swimming Pool

Jeffry Picower, a Florida businessman, philanthropist and former Bernie Madoff associate, was found dead today in a swimming pool at his Palm Beach mansion. The 67-year-old, who's been accused of raking in nearly $7 billion as a part of Madoff's skulduggery, was found at the bottom of the pool by his wife. Police are investigating the cause of death.

Though they've denied knowledge of the Ponzi scheme since it was uncovered, the Picowers have been sued in an attempt to recoup the almost $7 billion they withdrew from their account with Madoff over the years. Perhaps ironically, Picower and his wife were behind the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT and the Picower Foundation, which supports education, medical research and human rights causes.

Andrew Lloyd Webber Diagnosed With Cancer

It's been a bad weekend for icons whose careers relate to music. First Morrissey takes a spill on stage in London and now Andrew Lloyd Webber is diagnosed with prostate cancer. According to his spokesman, the cancer is in the early stages. "Andrew is now undergoing treatment and expects to be fully back at work before the end of the year," a statement said. That's an enormous relief, because we can't wait for Love Never Dies, his Phantom of the Opera sequel in which the Phantom has moved from the Paris Opera House to Coney Island. Seriously. [BBC]

"I shouldn't give away the secret," the actress told us at the play's opening last week. "But I'm obviously not doing what it looks like. I grab a bit of his thigh."

That's fine, but then the item goes on to suggest the following based on assumptions only:

1. That Angelina Jolie grabbed Jonny Lee Miller's scrotum while they were married.

2. That Jonny Lee Miller would physically harm Sienna Miller if she accidentally grabbed his actual scrotum, instead of his thigh. (To be fair, it is he who suggests that.)

3. That Sienna Miller's ex-boyfriends Jude Law and Daniel Craig were responsible for teaching Sienna how to grab a man's thigh in such a way that it looks like she's grabbing his scrotum.

And then Sienna weighs in about the British class system. Basically, it's the best gossip item of all time and we want to marry it.

Scientology Spokesman Storms Out of Nightline Interview

Taking his e-meter and going home.

One would think an official spokesperson for Scientology would know enough about Martin Bashir's particular brand of ambush interview to never agree to be in the same room with the Nightline correspondent ever for any reason, but one would be wrong. As part of a special Nightline investigation into the religion, Bashir interviewed spokesperson Tommy Davis. All was well until Bashir asked Davis a pretty basic question about Xenu, and he flipped out, claiming that asking a question like that was extremely offensive to Scientology members. It's kind of a genius strategy, actually, since nobody wants to offend anyone! When Bashir was like "What?" and tried to re-frame the question, Davis got up, dramatically removed his microphone, and walked out of the interview in the most indignant Scientologist way possible. Presumably, Bashir can get his question answered just by dropping by the Celebrity Centre and buying five hundred thousand dollar's worth of classes. The good part starts exactly 3 minutes in.

When asked on Friday about Dick Cheney's recent criticisms of the new administration's Afghanistan strategy, Joe Biden spoke from the heart:

Mr. Biden shrugged off Mr. Cheney’s point that the old administration had left behind a review of Afghanistan.

“Who cares what — ” he said, and then stopped himself to find another way to put it. (“I can see the headline now,” said the famously free-wheeling vice president. “I’m getting better, guys.”)

Burn! He also called Cheney's opinions "irrelevant."

Morrissey Collapses!

Morrissey has been released from the hospital after collapsing on stage last night at a show in Swindon, England with symptoms described as "breathing problems." This Sky News video captures the mood of the show kind of hilariously (the crowd boos!) Because Morrissey fans will want to know which song was interrupted by the collapse, it was the classic "This Charming Man," the analysis of which on Wikipedia makes for a most entertaining read.

Frank Rich: Balloon Dad was Just Trying to Feed His Family

2009's Tom Joad

In an Op-Ed titled "In Defense of the "Balloon Boy" Dad" today, Frank Rich takes the rather inevitable knee-jerk-counter-intuitive stance that we are all responsible for the Balloon Boy debacle, and that Richard Heene's actions were the natural result of our current culture:

"Heene is a direct descendant of those Americans of the Great Depression who fantasized, usually in vain, that they might find financial salvation if only they could grab a spotlight in show business."

Also, Heene is a carpenter, and he couldn't find work because people don't need carpenters right now! Because of foreclosures, and the economy. Okay, sure, why not? Fine. Oh, and he also says that everyone who watched that balloon on the news while it was in the air was hoping to see a six-year-old die. (Happy Sunday, everyone!)
