Michelle Obama was the "10 at 10" guest on The Jay Leno Show last night, answering Jay's ten questions about Sasha and Malia's Halloween costumes (a state secret), whether her husband would rather have world peace or a White Sox win, the contents of her iPod playlist, and a Brady Bunch memory game, which the First Lady aced, even remembering show-ruining legend Cousin Oliver!
Katherine Jackson's battle for control of her pop star son's estate is about to take a "new direction" based on "new evidence" uncovered by the family, a Jackson family lawyer said.
In a statement this afternoon, President Obama declared the H1N1 flu a national emergency, allowing Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius "to temporarily waive or modify certain requirements" to help health care facilities deal with the burden of the growing pandemic. [CNN]
In a piece exploring the ramifications of new MTA chair Jay Walder's fascinating new ideas for subway fares, such as charging less for rides at night and on weekends, the Times interviewed behavioral economist Dan Ariely, who had this so-crazy-it-just-might-work suggestion for increasing off-peak ridership:
"Instead of reducing all fares by 50 percent on weekends or late at night, he suggested, maybe the transit agency should make every other fare during those hours free, turning a turnstile into a slot machine of sorts. He remembered an experiment he was part of years ago at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, rigging a vending machine so that every third candy bar was free. Sales increased by 30 percent."
YES, please do this! Anything to make the world more fun, right? Though it's all fun and games until famous subway rider Mike Bloomberg gets his first free fare.

The LAPD is running a new commercial for their iwatch program, explained as "a neighborhood watch for the whole city," featuring a rainbow of presumably struggling actors who all have one thing in common: the ability to creep us out. James Hibberd over at The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed blog wasn't stretching when he called this "Orwellian." It's basically the very definition. Shudder. (Also: "smell something?")
The New York Times has fun today with the new report that Mike Bloomberg has now spent more of his own money seeking public office than anyone else in the history of America. As of Friday, the mayor has spent $85 million on just this re-election campaign alone, a number expected to go up to $140 million by the November 3rd election, for a lifetime total of $250 million. But how do we put big numbers like that into a context we can easily understand?
The Times:
"That means Mr. Bloomberg, in his three bids for mayor, will have easily burned through more than $250 million — the equivalent of what Warner Brothers spent on the latest Harry Potter movie."
We could have had another Harry Potter movie instead of a mayor!
"His campaign spending this year will nearly equal what his boyhood hometown of Medford, Mass., population 55,000, devotes to its annual budget."
We could have had another Medford, Mass!
And what exactly is the Bloomberg campaign spending all this money on? PIZZA PARTIES, of course!:
"And his political operation has become a one-man economic stimulus program, buying $8,892 worth of pizza from Goodfellas Brick Oven Pizza on Staten Island and in the Bronx. The company had suffered a big drop in business since the start of the recession.
“It’s a huge help,” said Marc Cosentino, one of the owners of Goodfellas. “They don’t have to economize like everyone else.”
Understandably, spokespeople for Bill Thompson's campaign call all the spending "obscene."
In his weekly presidential address today, President Obama focused on the needs of small businesses, their workers, and the community banks that serve them that were overlooked when the large banks were bailed out. “The goal here is to get credit where it’s needed most - to businesses that support families, sustain communities, and create the jobs that power our economy." Obama also pointed out that health care legislation will be an added benefit to small businesses in particular.
A woman named Karen McNeil, 48, has been ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from Justin Timberlake after breaking into the singer's home in Los Angeles for the third time last week. McNeil, who is thought to be homeless and is currently in psychiatric protective custody, first appeared at Timberlake's home in June, bearing a "bizarre" letter. According to the court order, "McNeil's ever-increasing, aggressive and harassing conduct has become extremely frightening," and Timberlake "fears for the personal safety of himself, his family and employees."
