Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Oct 2009 | 5:15 pm "I think there are more nuts than fruits in Fruit and Nut" - Boman Irani
That easy smile and the twinkle in the eye are hard to miss. Bollywood's cant-do-without actor and one who is known more for the immortal characters he has played than the Paris man he really is, Boman Irani is indisputably the finest of the lot. In conversation with Chandni Dev, he reveals his nuttier side in the upcoming film Fruit And Nut.
You are known to be the finest character actor of Bollywood. How do you take that comment?
Why? They don't think of me as a sex symbol (laughs). Well I am a character actor, I can't be a hero, as I am 60 years old, you don't want me to go spread my arms wide open.
How do you decide which film is worth it and which is not?
There are many reasons to do a film. One is that the script should be great even if the role is just ok. If the role is great but the script isn't, I don't think that's the best way to go. The people you are working with have to be of a certain kind of commitment, and then there are others you work for because you support them. Thankfully it has not happened to me yet, but you might need the money. I don't think I can just do one kind of film. I want to do all kinds of films from big blockbusters to shoestring budget films, and enjoy both the worlds, learn what goes into the two kinds. It's not necessary that they would work, there is a great possibility that a blockbuster might not work. We have to find a good enough reason to wake up in the morning and be excited to go to work and for the time being I am looking for that.
Let's talk about Fruit And Nut, what's this film all about?
Kunal Vijaykar is a very dear friend of mine. He's a friend who has bonded with me over food. He wanted to do this film and I said 'ok'. This film is mad if you ask me, it's insane. He is also working with insane group of people. We have Cyrus, we have Mahesh and Divya who seems to be the only straight person in the film. There's also Rajat Kapoor in the film, a complete nut job. I think there are more nuts than fruits in Fruit And Nut. It's just that I don't want to describe this film or put it under a category. It's insanity without description. Insanity has no real description or else I would have been a psychologist.

Working with a debut director on a bizarre film, how was it?
A first time director wants to give his best but at the same time he didn't get serious on the set thinking what if this doesn't work. As far as he is concerned, it was 'let's go out there and do it and let's have fun while doing it.' I think it's a great spirit to have around otherwise you are worried about whether it's working and then trying to mend it, fine tune it or polish it and it looses the essence of what the film was intended to be. I think Kunal gets the spirit of the film going.
With edgy Mahesh Manjrekar on one side along with funny man Cyrus, what were the dynamics on the set?
Most of the times I couldn't understand what Cyrus was saying because in the film I am suppose to be a senior 90 year old man. When I watched the film I understood what was really being said. Mahesh was inventing dialogues as he went along. When I saw the film I was like what the hell did he say? That's the spirit of the film we made.

The most enduring image of Ajay Devgn is still as 'Vanraj' in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. He is made to sing a song in the film to impress the girl's father in order to get married to 'Nandini', played by Aishwarya Rai. I still remember the non-stop laughter in the cinema hall. Come October 30th, that image will be knocked off. Ajay Devgn, on stage at the great Wembley Stadium in London, clutching a microphone and sometimes his guitar will be seen making his dream come true. One of the finest actors of his generation, Devgn has swiftly moved between drama, comedy, action and romantic films, which some find confusing. Ajay is earnest 24/7 in what he does, be it acting, producing, directing or family matters. There aren't enough words available to describe the sprawling and exceptional career of Ajay Devgn. I could only find one - 'extraordinary'. Recent years have shown no signs of this mammoth talent slowing down. Ajay continues to work at a feverish pace that actors half his age are best known for. On numerous occasions, I've been told that the actor is known to talk less. In person, Devgn is an engaging company, self-confident and very rarely voluble. He doesn't so much talk as hold forth. In full, he can sometimes come across like a character from one of his films. Put simply, he likes to talk about himself...and when he does, there is an edge to him- an almost imperceptible flicker of some darker, nervier energy that pulses just beneath the cool, calm exterior. That's him! UK's Harrow Observer columnist Devansh Patel brings you a rare chat with the 'great' Ajay Devgn where he talks about his ambitious next London Dreams, his first time working experience with Vipul Shah and Asin, getting back together with Salman Khan after a decade, his spiked look in the film and the film's USP. You thought it was Ajay Devgn? Read on....
How did London Dreams happen to you?
This film was planned years ago; things didn't work out at that point. Rajkumar Santoshi wanted to make it initially but that took time to take off. Eventually the script came to Vipul (Shah) to direct. He reworked it and approached me. I absolutely loved the script and decided almost immediately to do the project.
How did your first time with Vipul Shah come along?
Great! Vipul is very clear about what he wanted and had planned everything well, which explains why he has been able to shoot such an elaborate film, with the right nuances, emotions, drama and romance. Vipul understands drama and on the sets he comes completely prepared with shot breakdowns. That makes an actor's job really easy, as no time is spent in deciding how to can a particular shot. You just have to come on the sets prepared with your scene and he takes charge.
How did you acquire the body language of a rock star, which is the character you play on screen in this film? I don't play an over the top, Mick Jagger sort of rock star! The character wasn't flamboyant, he was subdued and controlled so it wasn't difficult to portray. I just had to listen to the music, imbibe it and behave how any musician would if he loved his music as much.
Tell us about your experience of working with a newcomer like Asin who stormed the scene with Ghajini?
She proved herself in Ghajini. I think she has done very well and is an extremely dedicated and professional girl. She is punctual and cordial with everyone on the sets. And as an actress I think she has a lot of potential.
You have spiked up look in London Dreams. Want to know more.
Vipul and I came up with the look that you see in the promos. We did a lot of photo shoots, tried various styles - but eventually decided to not go completely over the top, as that would compromise the believability of this character. So this look is actually quite simple yet stylish and it worked. I wear earrings and have a different hairdo! I liked it! Hope everyone likes it too!

To find out last week's answer click hereSource: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Oct 2009 | 4:35 pm Sanjay Dutt opts out of Bunty Walia's Just Punjabi
There're more twists and turns in the casting of Bunty Walia's Just Punjabi. First it was to feature Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt in a mentor-protegee plot set in Canada to be directed by Apoorva Lakhia.
Then the producer decided to let his brother Jaspreet Walia direct the film. Sanjay Dutt was relocated into the Big B's role while Abhishek Bachchan shifted into Dutt's role.
Now one hears that Dutt is no more interested in doing Just Punjabi.
Says a source close to Dutt, "After the long and taxing experience Sanjay Dutt had over Lamhaa, he wants to take a long break from Bunty Walia's projects. Next year Mr. Dutt's schedule is choc-a-bloc. No way can he fit Bunty's film in."
So where does that leave Just Punjabi? Bunty doesn't deny that Dutt is not confirmed for Just Punjabi, although he was the first actor on board when the project was announced two years ago.
Says Bunty, "As of now, Abhishek Bachchan is confirmed for the other role. I'm not sure about Sanju. I've to meet him to find out if he is on. But I'd like to believe he is on."
One reason being given for Dutt's reluctance to do Just Punjabi is the new director.
Bunty scoffs at this assumption. "Would Abhishek have agreed to do Just Punjabi if my brother was not competent? I'm too much of a businessman to invest in a project as large as this if I didn't have faith in it, even if the director is my brother."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 18 Oct 2009 | 4:30 pm I'm a very busy person: Sushmita SenShe had no release in 2008 and this year both her movies -- "Karma, Confessions and Holi" and "Do Knot Disturb" -- turned out to be duds.Source: Entertainment News | 18 Oct 2009 | 12:32 pm Diwali celebrations: A melange of traditions - Times of India
