"Only talent and creativity doesn't make a good film" - Karan Johar

Karan Johar Wake Up Sid has hit the jackpot and now it's a matter of seeing the kind of distance it would eventually cover. As someone who has entrusted the responsibility of directing a film to first timers like Nikhil Advani (Kal Ho Na Ho), Soham Shah (Kaal) and Tarun Mansukhani (Dostana) earlier, he is ecstatic that his newest protégé Ayan Mukerji had made an all around terrific impression amongst audiences as well as critics alike. "Ayan has earned it all. Really, no one other than Ayan could have made this film. His story made me realize that we all have been Sids at some point in our younger days. We all have gone through that phase. We have thought like that. Pick up any family and you would find a Sid. It is this identifiable factor that had made Wake Up Sid click with audiences in a big way", says Karan who has been inundated with congratulatory calls ever since the film hit the screens and took an all around excellent opening. Were there any special instructions from him to Ayan before the youngster started calling the shots? "These decisions are taken before you rope in someone to direct a film. Once you have entrusted the responsibilities, you should just leave an individual alone. He has worked with me for a good period of time and there are some things that do rub off on an individual. Hopefully some good things have rubbed on him as well", he continues. In that case, he seems to have mentored the bunch of newcomer directors quite well. While Ayan Mukerji has just seen the release of Wake Up Sid, another debutant Rensil D'Souza is getting ready to unleash his Kurbaan this November. Tarun Mansukhani is getting animation flick Koochie Koochie Hota Hai in place while also working on Dostana 2. First timer Siddharth Malhotra has already finished ground work on Stepmom remake while debutant director Punit Malhotra's I Hate Love Stories is also in news. Karan Johar's own My Name Is Khan would be releasing in early 2010 whereas newcomer Karan Malhotra has been entrusted with the responsibility of directing Agneepath remake. "More than being a mentor, I guess they look up to me as someone older who is almost seem like a parent", Karan philosophizes, "The difference in their age and mine won't be more than a decade but I guess I am much older in my mind state. Also, I have always shared my way of working which is that one should always have an off screen relationship with the actors other than just on screen creativity". Extending on his thought process, Karan adds, "See, 80% part of a filmmaker's job is to handle people and their emotions. Once you are able to do that as a director, creativity automatically steps in. If you can deal well with your cast and crew, your movie will by itself turn out to be something special. One should always possess people management skills; that makes the entire filmmaking process quite efficient." He sounds like a Management Guru when he says that. Laughs Karan, "Once you are on sets, you have so many energies to encounter. There are so many people around and you have to help them and waive off some turbulence that they maybe having around them. You have to get different people on the same page and ensure that creative parameters are met. Just because you are a filmmaker, you can't let go of managerial skills. Who said that one has to be just talented and creative to make a good film?"

"If not Bollywood, at least the West is giving me my due" - Satish Kaushik

Satish Kaushik Road, Movie was recently premiered at 2009 Toronto Film Festival. Directed by Dev Benegal, the film has seen some fabulous critic reviews coming its way and is now going full steam ahead to make its presence felt in more such international film festivals. Even though the film is being sold as an Abhay Deol starrer, the man who is not being missed by a single critic is Satish Kaushik who is being pointed out for his terrific performance by one and all. "When it is written about that Satish Kaushik has come up trumps in the movie, I obviously pride myself. More so because while in Bollywood, as an actor I have been pretty much slotted in the last 25 odd years, out there in the West, filmmakers are still willing to experiment", says Satish Kaushik who continues to play the balancing act between being an actor and a director. In the film, Satish Kaushik plays the role of a wanderer who seemingly knows everything about life. As a constant companion of Abhay Deol, he brings some of the most light hearted moments in the film while also making quite a few statements in an understated manner. Continuing in the same vein, he adds, "For them an actor is an actor. They don't hesitate in putting you in a challenging situation. Whether it is Road, Movie or earlier Brick Lane [2007], I have got some great roles to play. They have been a complete departure from the dozens of funny characters that I have played. Of course, these are the roles that have given me recognition in my country. But as a creative person, I am happy that West is giving me my due." Satish Kaushik Now that West seems to be waking up for him, is he planning to become a little more aggressive about his international assignments? "Of course I will love to do that", he immediately responds, "Films like Road, Movie and Brick Lane add a lot to your resume. It now boasts of international presence as well. Most importantly, the kind of roles coming to me aren't peripheral. It's not that 'chalo, ek Indian aadmi lena hai do scene ke liye, so let's get someone from Bollywood'. They are worthy roles, the kinds that are integral to the film, both quality as well as length wise." This is the reason why both he as well as Danny Boyle felt that they may work in some other assignment instead of Slumdog Millionaire. Not many are aware that Satish Kaushik was earlier auditioned for the role of a Sub-Inspector (who reports to Irrfan Khan) that was later played by Saurabh Shukla. "Yes, Danny had auditioned me and I was more or less finalized too. But then he told me that he had seen me in Brick Lane and believed that as an actor, I had a lot more to offer. He felt that if I played the role for which I had auditioned, it wouldn't justify my standing as an actor. We agreed to get together for something better in time to come", narrates Kaushik. His contemporaries from the early 80s, Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri, have already made an impression in the West, whether American or British film industry. Happy to join the league? "Yes, of course. This is the right time to go for the kill. All us senior actors are seeing some good recognition coming our way", he concludes.

Post Raashee piracy, Vipul Shah withdraws London Dreams from Shemaroo

Vipul Shah After their alleged involvement in the alleged piracy of the master-copy of What's Your Raashee, Shemaroo has suffered a big blow. Vipul Shah, who was seriously negotiating the overseas distribution rights of London Dreams with Shemaroo, has withdrawn the negotiations and almost overnight given over the deal to Studio 18. The deal happened days before the Shemaroo official accused of abetting piracy was released on bail. Says a source, "Shemaroo had apparently acquired the overseas distribution rights for London Dreams from Vipul Shah for a hefty advance sum. They're however, no longer distributing the film overseas." A year back, Studio 18 was in negotiations for the distribution rights of London Dreams for a whopping Rs. 120 crores. But the deal fell through. Now Shah is back with Studio 18 after the recent incident at Shemaroo. Vipul chooses to play down the reason for his withdrawal from advanced negotiations with Shemaroo for London Dreams. "I was negotiating with Shemaroo. But the deal didn't come through. However, the piracy allegation is irrelevant. Shemaroo has expelled the man accused of piracy." When asked if he ever thought that his withdrawal from Shemaroo at a time when the company's image has been dented would affect them, Vipul counters, "Why should I worry about that? We were under negotiation. We didn't come to a deal. We were even talking to Yash Raj. But I got the best deal from Studio 18. Shemaroo is a very respectable organization. I refuse to hold this one incident against him. They had distributed Singh Is Kinng and I was happy with them." As for piracy, Vipul says, "After the Raashee incident the cops have clamped down on piracy. You won't see a single pirated DVD in Mumbai. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for piracy."

Kareena is taking acting workshops & working on her look for Stepmom remake

Manish Malhotra is having a hard time trying to bring down Kareena's glamour-quotient in Stepmom, to make her look like the ordinary working woman. Kareena is leaving nothing to chance this time. In her determination to make sure she can match strides with the formidable scene-stealer Kajol in the desi Stepmom, she has been quietly attending acting workshops with the film's director Siddharth Malhotra. To make time for this, Kareena has been stealing time out of the rehearsals for the song that she began shooting with Aamir in 3 Idiots this week. Playing Kajol's soutan in the Indian Stepmom won't be a cakewalk for Kareena Kapoor. The two actresses start shooting together from the end of this month. Says Kareena, "The last time I rehearsed for a part it was for Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara. However, that was a more unconventional film and role where I had to get into a milieu and character I knew nothing about. But Stepmom is urban and very contemporary. I play a very normal metro-centric working girl. It should've been easier." Through the workshops, Kareena is discovering how difficult it is to play a normal girl. "I walk talk dress like an ordinary working girl. I'll be using no makeup." The clothes by Manish Malhotra will on this occasion be far less glamorous than what Kareena generally gets to wear. "I couldn't cut my hair as planned because of continuity clashes. And I didn't want to cut my long hair. But I'm going for a new hairstyle." The biggest challenge is to face the camera with the indomitable Kajol. Says Kareena, "She's always been one of my favourite actresses. We worked together in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. But this is something else." Kareena says there are lots of dramatic scenes between the two women. "The desi version of Stepmom is very different from the original. My role is also a big departure from what Julia Roberts played in Stepmom."

"Today, I am proud of Ranbir" - Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor Rishi Kapoor is overwhelmed with the kind of response Wake Up Sid has generated for son Ranbir. After some anxious moments spent in the week that led to Friday release of the film, he is also relieved that Ranbir has now been widely recognized as an actor who is reliable and can deliver the goods. "I can't explain how proud I feel today as Ranbir's father", says Kapoor senior, "His performance has made everyone stand up and notice, whether it's the audiences, people from the industry or the critics. With the kind of universal appreciation that he is getting, I am happy that he has done so very well for himself." With a Kapoor surname to boast of, it was never going to be easy. "Exactly", says Rishi Kapoor, "People feel it's an advantage but the fact remains that as an actor, you have to always prove your own worth. He is making some smart choices and working in distinct films. He hasn't taken an easy route and I am glad that his strategy his paying." As a father, he has mixed feelings about seeing Ranbir completely immersed in work. On one end he feels pained to see him slogging day in and night out. On the other hand, he understands that hard work means Ranbir is busy and hence he wants him to carry on. "Even when Wake Up Sid had to release on Friday, Ranbir was working from Thursday night till 6 AM on Friday to get some promotional activities running for his next release Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", reveals Rishi Kapoor, "He hasn't been resting. Soon he would be going to USA for the shooting of his next film. Meanwhile, he also has to promote Ajab Prem.... which is releasing in November followed by Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year in December and then Rajneeti in January." As a father, doesn't he feel like asking Ranbir to slow down a little? Other than the fact that next few months would be hectic, Ranbir doesn't seem to have taken any break during last couple of years, courtesy some non-stop shooting for five films in a row. "Arrey, let him work. I am sure he would plan it out all well. He is a grown up boy and knows how to take care of himself. This is the time to work hard", concludes Rishi Kapoor.

Revealed - British Raj connection in Blue

"250 feet deep lies the secret of Blue" This is what the promotional material of Anthony D'Souza (a.k.a Tony) directed film Blue has screamed ever since the film's publicity campaign began. There have been quite some talks about the film revolving around a treasure hunt which is hidden deep inside the sea. How number of characters from different walks of life come together to hunt for the treasure even as danger is lurking right down there forms the basic crux of this under water adventure thriller. However, it has just been revealed that this forbidden treasure, which is the focus of attention for everyone, is nothing but India's own. And there is a British connection to this as well! Informs a source closely attached to the film, "Blue is not entirely a piece of fiction. There is a definite reality to the basic plotline of the film. The origin of the story dates way back to 1947 when India had gained independence and British had left Indian shores. However, while doing so, they went all out to put a dent on Indian economy. They had taken away a lot of treasure with them." After an extensive research, it was revealed that Brits took 20-25 ships filled with treasure. One such ship sunk in the sea and no one ever got to know about its whereabouts. "This is how the basic germ of Blue was born", continues the source, "From this real piece of fact, Anthony D'Souza went on to spin an entirely fictional tale on how a group of people decided to hunt for this ship deep under the sea and lay their hands on the treasure." Akshay Kumar, leading antagonist of the film, confirmed that Blue is indeed about the hunt of treasure that Brits had taken away from India. "Yes, the film is about our very own treasure and Tony has fictionalized the entire story all very beautifully", says Akshay without revealing too much about the film's plot, "My character of Aarav forces Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) to join him in the adventure and hunt for this treasure." There are also talks that his character is an out and out black one in Blue. "Not really black, but it is that of grey", clarifies Akshay, "He is just like any other common man who wants money. It's just that the extent he goes to achieve the impossible and lay his hands on all the money is what makes his acts a little different from the rest." Also starring Lara Dutta and Zayed Khan along with Katrina Kaif and Kylie Minogue, Blue, which is produced by Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd and has music by A.R. Rahman, would be seeing a massive worldwide release on 16th October.

Subhash K Jha speaks on Do Knot Disturb

Do Knot Disturb When this piece of parodic perversity is mid-way through two questions strike us. What is the otherwise-classy Sushmita Sen doing in this atrocious homage to the spirit of unstopped revelry, most of it situated in the lobbies and corridors of a super-luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi? And then the second question strikes us almost immediately. What are we doing watching all these wonderful glamorous actors making fools of themselves in a plot that seems to have been written with the express purpose of extolling the 'virtues' of infidelity and seduction? Both Sushmita and Lara wear the shortest of dresses. The size of Sushmita's role matches her clothes. They take long leggy strides across the screen as the wife and mistress of a scum of a man who deserves to be thrown into the bearest garbage-can, along with the raw stock of this film. Whoever thought infidelity is an adequate formula for farce should see what a hash and trash David Dhawan has made of the actors as they parade across the screen in the poshest of ambience and clothes the camera captures. Alas, their morals match alley cats. Worse still these people are abhorrent in their failure to connect their physicality with any worthwhile emotions. Do Knot Disturb The scrambled comedy includes a couple of bumbling spies played by those two wonderful comic actors Manoj Pawa and Ranveer Shorey , one of whom has to play a corpse after half the film. The plot matches Shorey's cadaverous comicality. As for the actors they're largely over-the-top loud hammy and embarrassing. Govinda seemed to have rediscovered his funny bones in the recent (far funnier) Life Partner. Here he is hysterical rather than amusing. The plot has room for an army of characters including an ailing mother (Himani Shivpuri) and her coquettish nurse (Rituparna Sengupta) both of whom watch Deshmukh do Amitabh Bachchan's scenes from Deewaar. Ha ha. Govinda seems to have lost the plot. Lara makes so many faces you fear for her favourite makeup artiste. Riteish Deshmukh is in far better shape. He's quite funny in parts. But the funniest actor in a minuscule role is Sohail Khan as Lara's jealous and over-emotional lover who after a crash-course in anger-management desists from hitting any of the characters. We too need to take a course in anger-management before watching this utterly exasperating farce. Skip it.
