Geon Studios executes vfx for Kamal Haasan bilingual

Mumbai based visual effects and animation house Geon Studios recently executed around vfx 400 plus shots for the Tamil-Telugu bilingual film Unnaipol Oruvan. The film is a remake of the Bollywood film A Wednesday and stars Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal in the Tamil version and Venkatesh in Telugu version titled Eenadu. Interestingly, Shruti Haasan has composed the film's music. The movie is about a day's story, starts in the morning and concludes in the evening with paced mood and dramatic sequences. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, N Madhu Sudhanan, VFX Supervisor of the movies shared, "The story was to start in the morning and end in the evening, wherein the challenge for Geon was the lighting and tracking as the movie was shot in different times, different days and in different backdrops. Also, a story like this, visual effects should always be invisible and enhance the story telling!" Visual Effects Producer for both the films, Asmita Bharrati informed, "The deadlines were so tight for both the films posing many challenges in the post. The vfx team executed a wide variety of replacement and design shots - right from logos, nameplates, name boards, TV monitors, screen, rooftop gadgets, concrete floors to street lights, windows, digital matte painting and 3D set extensions. Especially, the camera was traveling throughout the film in every frame. It was highly challenging to track and composite many live action plates. Since GEON was the lead studio for the project the job never stopped by turning around the shots to the client but also guiding our vendors in Chennai and Mumbai were quite engaging!" Geon was lead studio for both the films, and executed the vfx in 6 weeks flat. In order to cope up with the tight schedule, Geon awarded few shots from both the films to Jupiter, Chennai and few shots from the Telugu film to EFX, Mumbai. Here's a shot breakdown of a few key scenes, courtesy Geon Studios.

"In one week Wanted has done better business than Kambakkht Ishq" - Boney Kapoor

Boney Kapoor Celebrations are in order. But the Wanted party has been postponed by a week. "Our director Prabhu Deva got caught up in an assignment in Kerala. So we've postponed the party for next week. We can't celebrate without Prabhu," says Boney emotionally. Boney has not been so excited in a long time. "The collections of Wanted speak for themselves. In the first week, it has done better business than Kambakkht Ishq did in its entire run. There was gun-firing between two sections of clashing Salman fans in a theatre named Rishi in Bulandshaher." And yet Wanted is supposedly a slow-starter in the multiplexes. Isn't it? Boney retorts, "Let Aditya Chopra make films for multiplexes. I'm happy reaching out to the masses." Commenting on why Dil Bole Haddipa didn't do well, Boney says, "Their intended USP was the Punjabi culture. Ironically, the film didn't even open well in Punjab. How does one explain this? Their other USP was Rani Mukherjee dressed as a man. But old-time heroines like Asha Parekh and Saira Banu have done the man thing long ago. And they were buxom ladies therefore tantalizing in their cross-dressing. With due respects to her amazing talent, Rani looked like a school boy." Feeling on top of the world, Boney says, "The corporatized culture that has seeped into filmmaking is not working. The corporate guys know only about paper-work, nothing about filmmaking. We need individual producers with vision to bail the industry out of its present crisis. I've made 30 films. But I still feel I've just started with Wanted." Apart from the No Entry sequel, Boney will also finally start a film with his mesmeric wife Sridevi. "If I don't, her fans will kill me. I've heard a script I've liked."

"Sometimes, even 2 hour films seem 4 hours long" - Ashutosh Gowariker

Ashutosh Gowarikar Say Ashutosh Gowariker and it's the vision of mega films like Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar or a socially relevant Swades that comes to mind. Now turn on your TV sets and browse through any music channel and it's the sound of 'Su Che' or jokes around 'Tom & Jerry v/s Tom Cruise' or the romantic strings of 'Jao Na' that are more visible. You are suddenly transported into a different world and it's difficult to believe that the name against 'Directed By' is Ashutosh Gowariker himself. In this exclusive two part interview, Joginder Tuteja catches up with the filmmaker and gets to know a lot more about the transition that he went through and whether What's Your Raashee? is indeed a small-n-cute film that it is perceived to be or is it just a comparison factor (due to his earlier work) talking? Over to Ashu... You somehow never seem to be setting easy goals for yourself. After a historical Jodhaa Akbar, one would have expected you to relax but you went on to make What's Your Raashee with 12 leading ladies! [Laughs] Yes, I always had this thing in mind to make a romcom. During Jodhaa Akbar itself, I became sure that my next would be a light hearted movie. I thought that from production point of view, it would be much easier. After working with 100 elephants, anything else would have been comparatively easier after all (laughs). I told Sunita about this as well and she was thrilled and happy. We both believed that it would be fun to do What's Your Raashee? After a month, I told her that this new story will have 13 songs. Now that was the first shock for her. Later I gently slipped in this other piece of information that there would be 65 locations for the film. This is where she indeed hit the roof! After working with 100 elephants, anything else would have been comparatively easier after all Were there protests? Not really (smiles). Jokes apart, we knew about the story and believed that it did carry great potential. The only change we made was to stop calling WYR as a light film because the production, yet again, was going to be big. The film itself threw so many challenges. Though we were aware that it won't be that easy after all, we ended up realizing its full impact only later once the shooting began. Right from setting locations to getting new looks in place for Priyanka, there were challenges all the way. It must have required a shift in mind set for you though to make a chic urban flick, right? Yes, I had to change and adapt myself to a very different kind of thinking. I tend to approach directing just like acting. Just like the way you have to mould yourself as an actor as per the character you are playing; something similar is required in direction too. My acting background helps because I have done diverse films like Saleem Langde Pe Mat Ro, Indrajeet, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa etc. My roles have ranged from being dark to light hearted. Similarly in direction too I had to change my style. And what exactly were these changes? I had to bring a change in my cinematic grammar. WYR is by nature a different kind of a film. It is more indoor and is more dialogue driven. It has a lot of comic silences. As a director, you have to observe the actors more. Moreover, I wasn't making a remake that I could have afforded a ready reference material. Ashutosh Gowarikar But the film is adapted from a novel? That's true and it has also been made as a 13 episode TV serial 'Mr. Yogi' in 1989. Later it was also made as a play in 1995. I watch a lot of plays, whether they are in English, Hindi, Gujarati or Marathi. I like to attend cultural events as well as art galleries. They help in sharpening your mind. Lot of times you retain certain things in mind. This story was one such thing. Even then I thought of making it as a movie and went to the source to know more about it. Once I decided that I had to bring it to the big screen, the sheer joy of creating that world was something that was so satisfying. Of course that satisfaction can only become complete once audiences too accept your film. The film appears to be truly contemporary though... Yes, it is completely contemporary. It's a movie set on Gujaratis in different parts of Mumbai ranging from Dahisar to Juhu. It's a 'smile through' film. The smiles are supposed to last for more than 3 hours though, right? [Laughs] Yes, it is certainly three hours long. However, for me, length is always secondary. How much does the film hold you and what's its content is always more important. When you have a long film, you know that the maker has a lot of stories to tell. Only otherwise is a movie 2 hours long. In any case, there are instances when even 2 hours movie don't work and seem like 4 hours long. I guess in current times, it is only economic consideration (around multiplex show timings) that possibly drives a film's length rather than hard and fast rules. There are instances when even 2 hours movie don't work and seem like 4 hours long Was Ronnie Screwvala, your co-producer for What's Your Raashee?, as convinced? Me and Ronnie are clear about the economic consideration for our film. We may loose that fourth show in a single screen or those couple of shows in a multiplex. However, I don't think audiences would mind that because they would still return to watch the film if they don't get the tickets in the first instance. It's this very understanding due to which association between Ronnie and me has been for so long. We have shared the same vision. Watch this space to read the second part of the interview with Ashutosh Gowariker

"I hope the pirated copy will not be cut" - Ashutosh Gowariker

Ashutosh Gowariker Hours before the release of his new magnum opus What's Your Raashee? Ashutosh Gowariker is running around trying to understand where and how the master print of his film was allegedly stolen and pirated from the lab. "I've been traveling to Toronto and then to Ahmedabad, so I'm not aware of the full situation. However, it's a scary and sobering thought that films have been going out for piracy from the lab. I'm glad they were caught out when my film was smuggled out. We don't know the extent of the damage. I can only be thankful my master print was retrieved. Just how many copies were made we don't know." Choosing to see the lighter side of the extremely grim situation, Ashutosh says, "I hope the pirates didn't cut the film. Priyanka Chopra signs Vishal Bhardwaj's next; will play 7 roles

After playing 12 roles of bride-to-be in What's Your Raashee?, Priyanka Chopra is finally playing the role of a bride, not to one man but seven different men. The actress is gearing up for yet another multiple role in Vishal Bhardwaj's next titled 7 Husbands. A source reveals, "Vishal was very impressed with Priyanka while working with her in Kaminey. He always referred to her as a dedicated and devoted actress. While scripting for 7 Husbands, without any second thought, he made up his mind to cast the actress in the movie. Vishal also had seen the rushes and promos of What's Your Raashee? with her 12 different avatars and thought she carried it off really well and could do justice to her film." The source continues, "In 7 Husbands, Priyanka will again be seen in seven different avatars of wives to seven different men. She will have different get ups for each wife. The seven different actors for the role of husbands haven't been finalized as yet. They are in look out for serious actors who might not be A-listers." "The movie is still in the scripting process. The movie will go on floors next year after Priyanka's dates are available and the seven actors are finalized," adds the source. Priyanka Chopra remained unavailable for the comment.

"Ajay Devgn is a complete prankster and Sanjay sir is very down to earth" - Mugdha Godse

After her critical acclaim in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion, Mugdha Godse was sitting idle for six months. Critics and cinema professionals were left discussing, 'She ain't getting any business now'. Now, with a clutch of powerful roles under her belt, Godse is back in business. I remember my first and the last meeting with the beautiful lady at the JW Marriott in Mumbai. 'Then' and 'Now' is how she can be defined today. When she enters the room, she owns it. It crackles with her arrival. She is alone, no entourage, no assistant and no publicist. Walking confident she sinks into the velvet beside me. Her hair not too long, but lustrous. Her eyes, big but glittering. She has a presence now, but it's not necessarily the one you'd expect, not haughty or demanding. Just two films old and third yet to release, her screen persona seems indestructible now. There's toughness, strength, a determination, and then there's me. Me, who took her first ever interview for All The Best and the same me meeting a different her after a year. She looks right at you as she talks and she's not afraid to be looked right at, herself. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel meets the perfect body, the long delicate limbs, the luscious lips and flawless skin. By the way, she doesn't need 'All The Best' now. She knows she'll crack it. Only for you - the confident and the magnificent Mugdha. This is your second film and we don't want to wish you 'All The Best'. Why? Because we know you and your film are going to do well… (Laughs) So sweet. I like that confidence. And how confident is Mugdha Godse today? I am as confident as I was in Fashion because that's what gets me good results. All I have is my confidence and I'm sure people will love the film because I have a good and a positive feeling about it. Your first film etched out your character pretty well. Does All The Best give you the depth like Fashion did? All The Best is a full on comedy. This film is all about timing and making people laugh. There are no emotions and strong characterisation like Fashion had. But yes, my character is etched out in terms of what she does. She is into Vedic science and believes a lot in lucky stones. I have tried to do something different. I wanted to make people laugh and that's what defines your success in a comedy film. I have done my bit and now it's all up to the audience. I'd like to wish my audience All The Best. My character is into Vedic science and believes a lot in lucky stones What about your belief in Vedic science off camera. Do you? There are a few things I believe in. I am not as mad as Vidya, my character, in All The Best. In the film, I connect everything to a stone or a pendant, etc. Off camera, I do believe in lucky charms. Which is your lucky stone? Diamond Mugdha Godse You very jokeeee? (Laughs) When I bought a solitaire for myself, a lot of good things started happening. I am wearing a yellow sapphire since six years too and it's been progressive. But diamonds are a girl's best friend, right? So I'm sure people will be giving me more of diamonds thinking that it's my lucky stone (laughs). It's a hint, to tell people what gift they can gift me. I'm sure it's a hint for the man who will be proposing you with a diamond. (Laughs) Yea! Yea! I will definitely take the diamond from my man and tell him 'tata bye bye'. This is the first time you're working with Bollywood heroes. How was it to interact with the male personalities? They came across as quite cool. Cooler I should say. I thought they would have a lot of ego and starry attitude, but no. They are so chilled out. Ajay Devgn is a complete prankster but luckily, I was not one of his 'bakra'. Sanjay sir is very down to earth. I hope all my male co-stars in the future too come across as sweet, cool, mad and confident. Ajay Devgn is a complete prankster but luckily, I was not one of his 'bakra'. Sanjay sir is very down to earth What about your 'life partner'? Fardeen Khan (Laughs) I think All the Best will just add on to the success of Life Partner. He is going to go a step ahead from that film. I like Fardeen and he is looking very good in the film. He is too good in his comic timing. Off camera, he is a different Fardeen Khan. He is a guy who will only talk in English off the sets but when he is on the sets, he will completely turn into his character who talks in Hindi. Which has been your favourite comedy film? I've loved Rohit Shetty's Golmaal and Golmaal Returns. They both were hilarious. But I can keep on watching Andaz Apna Apna. It's one of my all time favourite comedy film. And of course, who can forget the classic called Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. Once that you are signed for the film, I want to know what does a female star do after she has been briefed about the story. When I hear my role out, I jot down my own thoughts on what I'd like to add to my role. Then I write down all the things and amalgamate them. If I feel the need, I 'Google' it and do my own research by watching a lot of comedy flicks. You need to pick up the right things and do the right things once you are on for a certain project. I go with my instinct and go to any length to perfect my role. Mugdha Godse Your first promo of Jail is being showcased at the theatres. You're going fast girl. From a serious role to a comedy and back to a serious one. I'm loving this commercial madness and comedy but at the same time, I think Fashion and Jail are roles which are very performance oriented. All The Best is one too. But there is a different kind of acting required when you do a comic film. Everyone thinks that comedy is easy. It isn't. It was difficult for me to do All The Best as compared too Fashion and Jail. Madhur's films set you up as an actor and a performer. Rohit's films give you all the freedom to express your madness and talent. What did you learn from your bong co-star Bipasha Basu? Oh My God! There were so many similarities. We both have worked with Madhur Bhandarkar. Her last co-star was Neil Nitin Mukesh in Aa Dekhen Zara and my next co-star too is Neil, in Jail. She is so sincere and knows how to look her best all the time. That's what I have learnt from her. We did interact a lot about Jail and Madhur sir. Bipasha is so sincere and knows how to look her best all the time What about a man who is known to shoot the most expensive songs in Bollywood - Rohit Shetty? What about him? Man, he knows how to blow a car in mid air and get another car coming through the same car. He is an expert in action and not many know that. I even asked Rohit after seeing the first promo whether All The Best is a comedy film, romantic film or an action film (laughs). His answer was that it's a 'masala' film with all the ingredients. You won't believe it but All The Best was one film where I first time experienced how the bullets sound when fired from a gun. How diverse are two directors? Madhur who is a senior and Rohit, who is relatively young. Both have their own niche. Rohit's films are larger than life in scale. Madhur sir is more to do with emotions and drama. He captures his character in a different note. Both explore different genres. Rohit is always thinking how he wants the people to laugh after watching a particular scene. Madhur will make people laugh off the camera but when the camera rolls, he comes back to his serious get up (laughs). It's interesting that both are wonderful human beings and both are in demand. Rohit knows how to blow a car in mid air and get another car coming through the same car. He is an expert in action When was the last time you laughed out loud? On the sets of All The Best. We were shooting the climax scene and there were sixty people shooting for one scene. There were a lot of senior actors too. Everyone was cracking jokes even after the camera was switched off. When we all said 'All The Best', everyone was laughing like mad. I wish someone had shot that entire sequence. It was actually looking like a scene from the film. On the sets, on the last day, Jokes, madness and PJ's galore. One PJ from you to end this interview please. I am very bad at this (laughs). I'm sure you'll want to pull my hair off after this. Ok, here goes: Two friends were having breakfast and one of them questioned, 'Tumhe Butterfly dekhna hai kya?' The other friend replied, 'Kaise?' His friend answered, 'Butter ko bahar fek do aur woh fly karega.' OMG! I really have to end it here sweetheart. You butter (read 'better') do (laughs).

Teen Patti won't release with Paa

Balki has just left to shoot the last bits of Paa in Lucknow. The director's eagerly-awaited project Paa has been postponed by a month. However, the imminent clash with the other Bachchan starrer Teen Patti has been averted, thanks to the actor's timely intervention. Apparently, Mr. Bachchan personally requested the producers of Teen Patti to avoid any clash with Paa. So it's Paa going solo on December 4. Says Paa director Balki, "As far as I'm concerned it is only Paa releasing on December 4. We were supposed to release on November 13. But that would have been two weeks after another Amitabh Bachchan starrer Aladin. And we couldn't ask Aladin to shift. They've gone through too many delays already," rationalized Balki before leaving for patchwork shooting in Lucknow on Tuesday. "Though Paa is set in Lucknow, this is the first time that I'm visiting the city in my entire life," said Balki.

Ashutosh insisted on getting different 'hair bounce' for each Priyanka

Download WYR? wallpapers By now its common knowledge that Priyanka Chopra plays 12 roles in Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee, and that each one has been styled differently. But the attention that Ashutosh Gowariker has paid to the hair styling for each of the 12 Priyankas takes our breath away. Explains the diligent director, "You can tell a girl's personality not only by her clothes and hair but also by the way the hair bounces." A different bounce had to be created by hair stylist Asha Hariharan for every Priyanka. Priyanka has assumed a different skin tone, complexion and playback voices, each suited to the individual character in terms of personality and body/spoken language. Confirming this, Ashutosh Gowariker says, "I knew Priyanka could pull off all 12 parts. I've seen how nuanced her performances are right from the time she made her debut in The Hero. When we decided to have the same actress playing all 12 parts, we decided to give every character a totally different personally in terms of dress, skin tone and even hair style." Hair stylist Asha Hariharan was brought in to do Priyanka Chopra's hair for the 12 characters. Explains Ashutosh, "While Neeta Lulla has done all of Priyanka's clothes for the 12 characters, Asha Hariharan was brought in because I didn't only want only a different hair cut or style for all the 12 Priyankas. I also wanted a different fall and bounce for every girl's hair. For that, I needed an expert beyond the expertise offered by the Bollywood names." Rajesh Patil was roped in to do Priyanka's 12 skin tones. "They're very subtle differences. But nonetheless the skin shades determine a major part of every girl's personality." Priyanka being dusky in complexion had a particularly tough time playing the more gora avtars. As for her voices, Ashutosh sifted through innumerable voices with composer Sohail Sen before selecting the 11 voices (the 12th girl doesn't sing). "It wasn't like an audition. But yes, my music director Sohail Sen and I went through the voices to select the ones that suited Priyanka's every avatar." Adds Ashutosh, "If I made the film 20 years ago, Lataji would sung for all the 12 Priyankas and she would've made sure each avatar had a distinct personality."

"I have learnt a lot from Harman" - Priyanka Chopra

Download What's Your Raashee? wallpapers If one goes down the memory lane, one can comfortably say that with What's Your Raashee?, Priyanka Chopra may well be boasting of the biggest ever film written for a woman protagonist in the history of Indian cinema. After all, 80 years after legendary British actor Lupino Lane created a (yet unbroken) record for a male actor playing 24 roles in one single film, Only Me (1929), Priyanka Chopra is all set to emulate a similar feat when it comes to female actors. In What's Your Raashee (2009), she plays 12 different roles and the film has already been referred to Guinness Book of World Records for further consideration. While there have been quite a few double role performances by leading ladies in the past, there aren't many movies where a Bollywood actress has played even a triple role, let aside coming close to enacting a dozen odd characters in a single outing. Even as the film is just a few hours away from release, Joginder Tuteja catches up with the Priyanka and gets conversing around the ego boost that she must have got once Ashutosh Gowariker approached her for the role. She also chats about the complexities involved in bringing the 12 characters alive on screen, her friendship with Harman Baweja as well as the contribution that he has made in her rise as a top Bollywood actor. For playing these 12 characters differently, I had to change my body language and personality practically every day of the shoot The moment Ashutosh Gowariker broke the news to you that you would be playing 12 characters in What's Your Raashee?, what was your first thought? Were you already thinking of a record? Record? That thought just came and went. What was of paramount importance was the fact that I had to play 12 characters, all of whom belonged to the same age group. See, if an actor is required to play different roles but belonging to different age groups and social milieus, then I guess comparatively it is still manageable. You can make use of prosthetics, bring a difference in the way they talk and get a different cultural background. Yahan kya karte? After all each of the girls here was a Gujarati, lived in Mumbai and were all a marriage material. Not really an easy place to get some differentiation running... Not at all. Working in films is not as easy as you think from outside. You have to treat each of your assignment as an art and craft. You have to do a lot of things even if your film is a rom-com. Frankly, it was not an easy role to do as it may sound to you as an audience. For playing these 12 characters differently, I had to change my body language and personality practically every day of the shoot. What's Your Raashee? has indeed been the most challenging role of my career. We were all pretty clear that we couldn't take the film lightly. For this reason, we also did one and a half months of research to get the right personality traits as per different 'raashees'! With so many complexities involved, did you just leave yourself in the able hands of Ashutosh Gowariker and follow his instructions? See, when a director gives a script to an actor, lot of work is already etched on paper. Still, if you are an actor who wishes to contribute to the written material as well, you have to bring in a lot of your own self too. It is an amalgamation of vision of both the director and an actor. Just like a director cannot make a good film just on the basis of a script, similarly an actor too just can't rise above the script and rock the show on his/her own. Clichéd as it may sound but the fact remains that it is all a team work. Ashutosh says that it is a 'smile through' film. How would you like to call it as? Candy floss? Really, I don't understand the definition of candy floss! What I know for sure is that this film is entertaining, intelligent, funny, real, light hearted and quite humorous. And no, it doesn't turn slapstick at all. It is a film that you can go for with your family. Coming to your co-star Harman, since you have already done around 30 odd films while he has been seen in only two (which were unfortunately unsuccessful at the box office), did you play a mentor of sorts on the sets? Was it the case of you being a little protective about your co-star and hence came up with a shielding act? Who am I to do that? No, I don't think I would have even thought of being responsible for his act in front of the camera. He is himself quite talented and on the contrary I have learnt a lot from Harman. He knows a lot more than me about cinema since he comes from a filmmaking background Really? That's right. He knows a lot more than me about cinema since he comes from a filmmaking background. I have known him before I started working on films. I used to take his help in my career as an actor. We have been friends for five years now. While I have learnt everything on the job after making mistakes, he is trained and is much better placed. Rahi baat hits ya flops ki toh jaisa kehte hain naa, samay se pehley aur bhagya se zyaada kisi ko nahi milta! The worry factor must certainly have been there though once both Love Story 2050 and Victory didn't work at the box office, isn't it? But then there have been some of my own films that haven't worked at the box office, so what can one say about that? It is all a part of the business. We do not have any actor in the history of filmmaking who hasn't given flops.
