16 Ka Dum for Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna director Prem Soni

Prem Soni Today is a special day for debutant director Prem Soni. It is 16th September and exactly one month from now, i.e. 16th October, he would be seeing the kind of directorial launch that many could just dream of. In his very first film Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna, he has managed to get Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor together in a romantic affair. But wait, this is not entirely the reason behind Prem being seen in such an ecstatic mood. As statistics and hard facts reveal, number 16 holds a special place in his heart. Prem gives the reasons why. "Well, I have been dreaming of making a film for exactly 16 years now. Call it destiny, luck, fortune or sheer coincidence but now my film is releasing on 16th October. There is someone up in the sky who is certainly smiling at me. He wanted that the number 16 sticks on with me. God has himself written Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna for me", exclaims 34 years old Prem who is happy to let his child like excitement be known to one and all. Considering the fact that his film was originally slated to arrive over Valentine weekend early this year, doesn't he feel that the coincidence has only worked in his favour? "You can say that", he smiles, "I have now got a Diwali weekend for myself. Yes, the film was originally being planned for February release but then a schedule had to be cancelled due to unavailability of dates of some key actors. Post that we did wrap up the film fast which included a couple of songs to be shot. But then the strike put a spanner in our films. As the saying goes, all is well that ends well. I have no regrets since this is the best time for the film to release." With huge multi starrers like Blue and All The Best that have already been hyped beyond imagination, doesn't he feel that there is already too much happening on the Diwali weekend? Doesn't he feel that arriving a week later may perhaps help? "Along with the cast and the crew of the film, I personally believe that Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna is a Diwali film", says Prem in a confident tone, "Everyone wants to see good films in cinemas and celebrate during festival occasions. Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna is a kind of film that you can see with your spouse or that special someone while holding his/her hand. There is a lot of romance and other heart warming moments in the film which justify its genre. I have no second thoughts around releasing my film on Diwali.''

Priyadarshan's next is action flick starring Ajay, Akshaye and Bipasha

Priyadarshan Now it can be told. Ajay has set up a makeshift gym in far-off Karaikudi for more than just recreation. For his role in Priyadarshan's hard-hitting tale of honour killing in Bihar, Ajay Devgan needs to have an especially toned-up physique. The film is yet untitled and stars Ajay Devgan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu and Paresh Rawal. Talking about the film, Priyan says, "I've turned the horrific tale of an actual incident in Bihar of an inter-caste romance into a full-on actioner. See, I wanted to keep it real. At the same time I wanted to make it riveting for the audience. So while shooting on an authentic location (Karaikudi is like a small town in Bihar) I've made my two heroes Ajay and Akshaye Khanna into full-on action heroes. This film has the kind of real stunts never seen in Hindi cinema." Priyan has roped in his old action director B. Thyagarajan and a stunt director from South Africa, Frances to devise action scenes which would take the director's Bihari drama into the region of riveting realism. Says Priyan, "When I say real action, I mean fight scenes that are the opposite of cable-wired flips somersaults jumps and leaps. This time Ajay has gone as raw as it can get." The action sequences have both Devgan and Khanna locked in hand-to-hand combats, and other very basic forms of physical aggression that went out of vogue with the old Kung Fu films. For this, Devgan needed to get into a different shape, and so did Akshaye. In fact, Akshaye is a new convert to the gym. Till this schedule in Karaikudi started, Ajay persuaded Akshaye to head for the gym. "Yes we've a set up a terrific gym in this wilderness. It's been set up in an under-construction building. It has all the equipment," says Bipasha. "We all work out in it. Ajay and I, of course. Paresh Rawal also works out. Akshaye Khanna only used to play squash for exercise. Now he's started going to the gym. They need to get into a specific shape for this film." Before producer Arbaaz Khan can shift Bihar to Vai near Mumbai for the shooting of Abhinav Kashyap's Dabangg, Priyadrashan has relocated a village of Bihar in Karaikudi, a Tamilian small-town 80 kilometers away from Madurai to shoot for his very real headline-derived inter-caste love story that shook rural Bihar some time ago.

Akshay Kumar's stunt washed away by rain

Akshay Kumar What was planned as an explosive stunt featuring the King Of Action Akshay Kumar with the all-girl contestants of the daredevil reality show Fear Factor turned out to be a massive damp squib. In what the personnel of the fledgling channels Colors are jokingly referring to as their first fiasco, the planned stunt at Mumbai's Mukesh Mills came crashing down quite literally. The entire prop from which Akshay Kumar was supposed to plunge 30 feet below came crashing down in the torrential rain that ripped through Mumbai's skyline on Monday afternoon. Says a source from Colors, ''Akshay had been practicing rigorously for the stunt for two days. Disaster struck a day before the event when during the dry run, one of the contestants Mandira Bedi got a hairline fracture. And if that wasn't bad enough, just before the event the whole prop crashed down and so did the area we had cordoned off for the press.'' Confirms Colors CEO Rajesh Kamat, ''It went wrong. Akshay couldn't do his stunt. Doesn't matter. There will be many other occasions.''

I didn't have a narration, I actually read the script and it was really nice, dreamy and humorous. It's Rajasthan (a North-Indian state), so I kinda had a nice feel about it. I knew Dev (Benegal) and was sure that he would get a good team together. Then there was Studio 18 behind it, which was a big plus point as well. It's important for a good script and director to have the right backing. All I had to do is to sign on the dotted line, which I did! It's very different from the ones I've played previously. He's very simple, urban and non-verbal. It was a journey through life for him Road, Movie has been produced for Indian Films and Studio 18 by well-known US-based producers, Ross Katz and Susan B. Landau. Did you know about them? I got to know Susan on the shoot; she was the person behind the wheel driving us. It was cute to watch her work in an Indian milieu. On the way she began to pick up a bit of Indian-ness, which was great. I met Ross briefly in New York at the screening of Slumdog Millionaire. Tell us the experience of working with Tannishtha Chatterjee and Satish Kaushik in Road, Movie? Satish Kaushik and Tannishta are seasoned actors with a great body of work. I got to know them during the making of the film and it was a pleasure. Dev is a great director to work with as well. He's very clear in his thought process and very receptive to ideas and opinions. When he has something nice to say that means he's really angry and when he has something nasty to say he's really happy. He was nasty for the most part so that was a good thing! Tell us a bit about your character in Road, Movie? It's very different from the ones I've played previously. He's very simple, urban and non-verbal. It was a journey through life for him - comic, dramatic, coming of age, growing up and discovering freedom. He doesn't have an idea of what he wants to do, all he know is that he doesn't want to be in this town because he doesn't see a future for himself. He fears he'll end up like his father. Abhay Deol The truck is an integral character in Road, Movie. Tell us a bit about your romance with it? It was hectic but fun. I had to drive a truck- a 1943 Chevy in which a brand new engine had to be put! It wouldn't go further than 40-50 miles an hour and in a sequence where I had to drive it really fast everyone was afraid that the truck would collapse! The wind shield was too low, so I had to slouch and drive. The rear view mirrors looked up on the back of the truck so I couldn't see the traffic behind me but over time I got used to it. I had to drive a truck- a 1943 Chevy in which a brand new engine had to be put! It wouldn't go further than 40-50 miles an hour What's been your biggest take-away from the Road, Movie experience? It was my eighth film, I was mature by then... it was a great experience overall. I made some great friends and slogged in the desert heat. I hope it does well because it's not a run-of-the-mill Bollywood film. It is a dry feel-good comedy, poetic and subtle in its humour, beautifully shot and surreal. What would you say is the USP of Road, Movie? Its execution. It's a beautifully shot universal story with minimal dialogues. The movie is told through silences through the road journey. What were your thoughts on finding out about its official selection and world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, 2009? I was excited and delighted because this is the kind of film that merits a huge international platform. Its script was an official selection at L'Atelier du Cannes in 2006. It is being represented internationally by Fortissimo Films. Road, Movie is their first Indian take-up. The film is Indian at heart but international in attitude and personality. It caters to the South-Asian and mainstream audiences alike. (Road, Movie premieres at The Winter Garden Theatre Toronto on 18th September and at The Scotia Bank Theatre 1 Toronto on 19th September.)

"Black-waala's word is more reliable than critic's" - Mahesh Bhatt

Mahesh Bhatt It is common knowledge by now that Pritam's compositions for Tum Mile are already all over on internet even though the album is yet to officially hit the stands. The pirated copy of the songs with credit details intact have been available on number of music websites since the weekend gone by. Of course the initial reaction of the entire Bhatt camp was that of being shaken and stirred. However, as the dust settled down and realization struck that a partial damage had been done, the cast and crew of the film started looking at quite a few positive aspects of things. Says Mahesh Bhatt who is always willing to find positive points in the grimmest of situations, "Pirates have declared Tum Mile music a hit. I guess they know more than everyone else. They got to the consumer even before we opened sales. This pretty much speaks volumes about the kind of excitement that the product has generated over the months." Not everyone associated with the film is excited in a similar manner though. Kunal Deshmukh, whose Jannat was a huge musical success, is disappointed that the music is being downloaded without the consumer spending even a rupee. "It is disgusting and a direct attack on those very people who continue to hold such a strong view against piracy", he fumes, "Bhatts are known to be trail blazers when it comes to raising a voice against piracy. All these efforts are pushed back when their own product is pirated and that too before its release. It is so sad that we are even talking about it when our album release is still a day away." "But by not talking about it we won't be able to stop piracy", Mahesh Bhatt has a counter argument here, "After all the black-waala's word is always more reliable than that of the critic! He is the voice of the masses after all. If he has managed to make the music a HIT then well, let's accept that rather than running away from reality." Composer Pritam though is distraught that Tum Mile is being heard online. "The music of Tum Mile is one of my finest and deserves to be respected", he says, "It deserves to be heard on a proper CD rather than through illegal downloads. I hope and pray that the damage is minimal and the music follows a good sales graph once it hits the stands." Kunal does try to bring on a smile too even in the most adverse of circumstances, "I am with Pritam when he says that. When I go through social networking sites and see people talking good things about Tum Mile and recommending it to people around, it only makes me further confident about the product that I have in hand. In a way, at least one scare factor is off because the music seems to have been widely accepted."

Akshay's reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi grows further with word of mouth

Click above for event stills Unlike many a blockbuster films that take a huge opening on the first weekend, recover their investment and either remain stable or take a downslide at the box office, Akshay Kumar's dare devilry filled 'Khatron Ke Khiladi Level 2' too is taking a similar route though with a slight difference. Instead of slowing down after a 'huge opening' on television, it has shown a consistent jump with every passing day. Confirms Ashwini Yardi, Programming Head, Colors, "On the first day the AMAP number was 2.9, which is extremely good by all standards. By the third day it was already 3.7. The 9:00PM - 10:00 PM slot on which KKK is currently being aired was earlier rated at 1.2. From 1.2 to being 3.7 is more than 300% jump and naturally we at Colors are quite excited. KKK is a brand for us and such huge success for the second season has reassured our belief in the concept. We had launched our channel with Level 1 of KKK last year and even then its number was 1.5. This is why KKK is the most promoted show on Colors." Now that the 'opening' has been achieved, how is the channel looking at keeping the momentum up for the show? "Looking at the way last week has gone, the momentum is pretty much in place. Regarding a huge opening, then well marketing can make you reach to a particular level on the first day but after that it's the content that matters", she reasons, "If that wouldn't have been as strong, the numbers would have lost rather than showing escalation as days had progressed. This pretty much shows that the word of mouth has been immense. We are confident that the momentum would continue in the coming weeks and the proceedings for all contestants too would become more and more interesting from here on." Of course the show wouldn't have seen the kind of popularity as it has gained today if not for Akshay's informal interaction with the participants and a striking sense of humour. "Of course yes, that's a major factor", she agrees, "People have loved Akshay's sense of humour in the show. As a mentor who can advice, shout or laugh as per the demand of the situation, he has been an asset to KKK." Considering the fact that there have been widespread talks around Akshay being paid in crores for each of the episodes of KKK, does the channel feel that the investment has been worth it? "Well, our policy doesn't allow us to talk about remuneration of people associated with us", she takes a firm stand here. "Of course the figures quoted by different sources are well, just 'source figures'. At the end of the day, it's us and Akshay who know the entire truth. However, this doesn't take away from the fact that the show and Akshay are the perception driver for the channel and we are proud of both."

Abhishek Bachchan calls for his Lexus to Nashik, on Raavan location

Abhishek Bachchan Mani Ratnam might be shooting for Raavan in one of the most beautiful and finest locations but the cast and crew are having a tough time reaching the shooting site. Abhishek Bachchan, therefore, has called for his Lexus all the way to Nashik so that he can travel with his wife through all the bad and foggy roads. A source from the unit reveals, "We are currently shooting in Malshej Ghats, on Pune-Nashik highway. The place we all are put up in is an hour away from the location. The entire unit with the cast travels for more than an hour to reach the location. Abhishek wasn't happy with the car provided to them for their journey back and fro. He called for his Lexus (SUV) and drives it with his wife Aishwarya to the shoot." The source continues, "The roads are very terrible and there is too much of fog on the way while driving. AB junior manages to drive on the awful roads and reaches on time too. This is a month long schedule and has the Bachchan duo, Ravi Kishan, Nikhil Dwivedi along with the South actors.

"Both Aamir and SRK came on my first day of shoot for Dil Bole Hadippa" - Rani Mukherjee

Rani Mukherjee Rani Mukherjee has a glow about her. It's not just the glow of success. It's her first film after twelve months. Her glow also comes from liking who she is, knowing what she wants and keeping her priorities razor-straight - Family and films. I recall the last time I met her in London. The image of Mukherjee that sticks is the one with the reluctant, limp handshake and grumpy, yawning pout, muttering to her PA, "What is this for? What are we doing?" That was then. Today the woman is knackered but confident to switch on her old charm in Dil Bole Hadippa which releases this Friday. Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent and UK's Harrow Observer columnist brings you an exclusive excerpt from the expert on her comeback film after a year, her first day of the shoot with Aamir and SRK, the flood which destroyed her set and her being surrounded by a bunch of 'S' people - Shahid, Sherlyn and Sawant. What was the initial reaction to the trailers? My friends are all biased towards me and they love whenever they see my movies and my trailer but in the last few films of mine, I don't think I saw that excitement from them. With DBH, I saw excited reactions from my friends and my family. Your experience with debutant director Anurag Singh? Anurag is very simple by nature. He is very religious. Whenever he used to get the file of his shot division, he always had a Sai Baba photo and a Durga Mata photo in it. After seeing that, I felt that this faith of his will definitely be fruitful for all of us and DBH. Any memorable experience while shooting for DBH? It was my first schedule for DBH. We were shooting the song 'Bhangra Bistar' and I had this get up where I am supposed to be a man. It so happened co incidentally that SRK was shooting for RNBDJ and Aamir was shooting an ad at YRF at the same time and both of them looked at my guy avatar and they were quiet taken aback by the looks. Aamir came and helped me put my moustache. That was so sweet of him. Both SRK and Aamir were eager to see what I am doing in the song and came and gave their blessings on the sets. It was really sweet because Aamir and SRK are two very special people in my life and by them being on the set on my first day of the shoot, I just felt blessed. Rani Mukherjee So how was Shahid Kapoor? He is extremely hard working, dedicated and a very sincere actor. By nature, he is very serious in what he does. I think that is what is going to take him a long way. He knows the medium of cinema. He is always very clued and glued on. He is really an asset to the film. Having Shahid in the film makes the film very fresh, very contemporary. He is looking so good in the film, that every time he would come on the set, I would tell him 'Oh my God Shahid, you are looking so handsome!' and he used to always get embarrassed. I think the first time I met Shahid was on a Pepsi advert that I did with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol way back in 1998. That time Shahid was one of the dancers for Shiamak. He reminded me again that the memory he has of mine is of the night when we were shooting the advert. I just came and ruffled his hair and he remembers that very fondly. I told him it's not changed. Even now I'll come and ruffle your hair. I think the entire crew of Hadippa, has worked like little kids trying to get our school project right, so that our teacher, which has to be Aditya Chopra, sees our project report and says, 'OK this project is really good'. So we are all trying to make him happy. I think the first time I met Shahid was on a Pepsi advert that I did with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol way back in 1998. That time Shahid was one of the dancers for Shiamak. Another S - Sherlyn Chopra? Sherlyn is a very good actress. I never expected that she would do so well because she was very prepared when she came on the set. I have seen her videos and she is a very good looking lady but when she shot with me, we were all very pleasantly surprised because we saw that she can do even more. This is what I studied from my seniors and the colleagues I have worked with. When I was new and I worked with Aamir and SRK, they used to inspire me to do my best. I think I did the same because I felt she needs a little motivation. One more to go. S for Sawant...Rakhi Sawant? Rakhi is very entertaining off and on the sets. She is basically a very entertaining person, but this time when I met her for DBH, I saw another side of her where she came across as serious, which is different from what I know of her and see on TV. She is a very nice person to work with. She is very professional. She is very hard working and of course that shows in her work. Not only Rakhi, even Vrajesh has done a nice job. He is there with me in most parts of the film, because he plays my friend. He is very funny. He used to come up with these one liners. He was also great to work with and a very good actor. Rani Mukherjee Any fond memories after pack up? I have so many fond memories, especially the Punjab schedule because we were there for nearly two months. It was really smooth shooting in Chandigarh because the police there was really accommodating and even the people of Chandigarh. Amritsar was good too. I think Punjab is one of the best places to shoot in India because it is really very easy to shoot there. Punjab is known for its food and for its people. I think the food in Punjab is absolutely delicious. On our way back to our Hotel, we would stop at the dhabas and used to have, believe it or not, maggi noodles and masala chai. Can't get better out of Punjab, can you? It will always be the best. What about your fitness regime? It was quite a health conscious unit. Shahid is a lot into workout. I was also working out because I was playing this character in the film who had to look physically fit. Then there was Shudeep da who was doing his cardio regularly. I also introduced Vaibhavi to Yoga at that point in time. The only fact that remained constant was that Anurag never came to the gym. We never saw him in the gym. He never came to look after his health even once. He was only eating and eating and shooting and eating. But he has promised that by the next film he will lose all his weight and is going to gym with us, if we are there in his next movie. When 'Discowale Khisko' was being shot, I got a call from the Production Executive saying that the set we had created has got flooded Tell us a little about the set getting destroyed. I remember that twice we had a problem during the shooting of the songs. I don't know why but we were destined to have problems when were shooting the songs. Probably because Anurag was making us work really hard and was not giving us any break, so may be it was God's way of giving us a break and of course we can't fight against nature, can we? When 'Discowale Khisko' was being shot, we were all very geared up for the next day's shoot and early in the morning I got a call from Bhushan, who is the Production Executive saying that please don't leave for shooting because the set we had created for 'Bhangra Bistar' has got flooded. We discovered that at three in the morning, Anurag woke up hearing the storm and called Bhushan to go and check if everything was ok on the set that we created, but unfortunately the whole place was flooded. Vaibhavi was very sure that she wanted a dry set because it was a dance song and none of the dancers or the actors would be able to dance in wet conditions. While shooting for 'Ishq Hi Hai Rab', we were tortured by heavy rainfall. Rani Mukherjee Which character of yours was more fun to play? For me, playing Veer was very challenging because it's something that I have not played before. I am playing another gender in the film. I play a man, something new for me. I enjoyed it a lot more than playing Veera because Veera is like playing my character again, or something I have done before. Even Veera's character is challenging but if I had to choose between the two, I would choose Veer. And strangely, even unit members used to behave very friendly with me when I was Veer, and when I used to become Veera , they will again be very respectful and in control. I really enjoyed being a boy on Hadippa - it was really fun because Jay and Aparajita who are the writers have etched out the character of Veer really well. This is a character which I am going to cherish throughout my career. Playing Veer was very challenging because it's something that I have not played before. I am playing another gender in the film Are you ready to join the cricket team with the extensive training? No, I am not ready to join the cricket team because that's not happening for me. I think, I can just about hit the ball with my bat and that is my achievement. It is something I wanted to do very sincerely because we have made a film for a cricket loving nation. I was really sure that whoever watches me play cricket on screen should not say that I hit a shot badly. I am hoping that the hard work that I have put in all my practice sessions for cricket supersede my fears of people not accepting me as a cricketer. How much did you prepare for the role? I think acting comes naturally to me. I don't know how but I think its God's gift to me. The only thing I worked on is on my cricket because that was one territory which I didn't know well. I didn't know how to hold a bat correctly, I didn't know how my stance should be as a cricketer, I didn't know to walk with the pads on. All this required a lot of training. It required me to learn the sport. Rani Mukherjee Was getting into Veer's look time consuming? I used to get really sick and terrified when I used to get up in the morning and play Veer because I knew there will be glue on my face and there is going to be something stuck on my face and being a girl I am not used facial hair or something sticking to our face or upper lip. So that was the only thing that made me so uncomfortable. The stress would start during pack up time. It is a more extensive process to remove the beard than to put. For removing you have to put those weird smelly lotions that you can't breathe with. I used to literally stop my breath till the time they used to remove the beard from my face. That was the most painful moment. But I guess, there is no gain without pain. What should the audience expect from Dil Bole Hadippa? I feel this movie is an effort from our sides where we have put in all our love, hard work, and creativity and have made this film like little babies. I just feel they should not come with expectations; they should just come to enjoy the film. I am coming out with a movie after a year. My last release was Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. I am extremely close, extremely emotional about this movie. I have not done any film in this time. I have put in all my energy and hard work for this movie. It was a difficult film to do, to be a boy, to play cricket. I have done a lot to prepare for this role. I hope when they come to see my film after a year, they are not disappointed and shouldn't go unsatisfied.
