Fug Girls: At the Court of Christian Siriano and Tim Gunn

Alessandra Ambrosio, Tim Gunn, Kristen Johnston, Kelly Rowland, Mena Suvari, and Katrina Bowden.

When we arrived at Christian Siriano’s show Saturday afternoon, we were — to quote the esteemed Tim Gunn — concerned. There were so many people fighting to get inside that we were convinced the entire experience would end in tears, possibly ours. Even Fern Mallis looked worried when we spotted her surveying the crowd, and if Fern’s worried, then we should all be worried. Our fears worsened when we discovered that Siriano was still conducting a run-through of the show at 4 p.m., which is when it technically was scheduled to begin.

But, as usual, our hysterical imaginings were completely off-base. The show kicked off 45 minutes late, but it was worth the wait if only to see the mock-turtleneck catsuit, crippling-but-fantastic Payless shoes, and giant, wide-brimmed hats Siriano sent down the runway.

The first thing we spied when we walked into the Promenade was, unfortunately, not one of those glorious hats, but Project Runway alum Jack Mackenroth peeking into the front-row guest bags. Predictably, the crowd was liberally sprinkled with fashion-oriented reality-television folk, from Mackenroth’s sidekick, Kevin Christiana, to a very petite-looking Nina Garcia and the America’s Next Top Model judge Miss Jay Alexander, who graciously posed for photos with countless tweens, one of whom was so thrilled to meet him that she actually jumped up and down.

But if Miss Jay inspired Beatles-era euphoria from that little girl, Tim Gunn created it in the rest of the crowd. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Tim was treated like a rock star from the moment he walked into the tent, looking dapper as usual in a gray pin-striped suit. Honestly, the man was swarmed. It’s tempting to report that he was completely surly and difficult, but that would be utterly untrue. There is, after all, a reason everyone loves Tim Gunn — including us — and it’s basically because he is awesome.

Tim, in fact, got so much attention that the more conventional celebrities were almost able to sneak to their seats completely unmolested by the press. But they couldn’t hide forever. Eventually, everyone noticed pop star Amerie (and her insanely fierce shoes), though her seatmate, Teyana Taylor, didn’t get much love. This is either because Teyena is still largely unknown among people who aren’t contractually obligated to pay attention, or because she looked so young and casual in her black jeans and sweatshirt that the photographers were duped into believing she was a particularly cute staffer who’d just decided to take a load off in the front row. We were paying attention, which means we can tell you that at one point Teyana graciously received congratulations from Tim Gunn. For what, we can not say, but we hope it’s because she’s going to be appearing on Project Runway: Minor Celebrities, a TV show we just invented. Call us, Lifetime!

A few seats down from Teyana was 30 Rock’s Katrina Bowden, who is surprisingly tall and really, really tiny. She also seemed a bit cranky — probably because people are always saying how skinny she looks — but she rallied long enough to confess that Christian is making her dress for the Emmys. Bowden’s appearance kicked off a whole cavalcade of blondes, including her seatmate, Mena Suvari, who looked kind of great in a black cocktail dress and beehive hairdo despite her distractingly incongruous neck tattoos. We also spied Kristen Johnston and decided that we want to sit next to her if we ever land in the front row: Her running commentary to neighbor Gunn was apparently hilarious, judging from his delighted chortling.

We also wouldn’t mind sitting next to Kelly Rowland, both because she cheerfully introduced herself to everyone in her vicinity, but also because we need to get the name of her facialist: Her complexion is amazing. Kelly had a nice long chitchat with a jumpsuited Veronica Webb, who was wearing a straw hat and almost pulling it off. We’d love to know what the two of them were actually talking about, but in the absence of the facts, we’ve decided they were taking bets on whether mutual friend Isaac Mizrahi will send out models wearing purses as hats again this season. Fingers crossed!

Also spotted: singer Estelle, looking cute in a new, shorter haircut and sitting next to Nina Garcia, making us hope that we’d see her on the cover of Marie Claire sooner rather than later. Speaking of cover girls, we also saw the current Star magazine headliner, Tori Spelling, sans husband Dean McDermott, which obviously means that Star’s story about how they’re both living a lie is the unimpeachable truth.

But what definitely is the truth is that Siriano went over like a pony keg at a frat party with this crowd. There was spontaneous applause for one dress — a stunning, tiered tulle ballgown — and a partial standing ovation at the close. “Wow,” we overheard Gunn declare to a reporter afterward, and we kind of have to agree. In fact, the whole thing was kind of fun. Turns out, those people fighting to get in had the right idea after all.

Jason Wu’s Feathered Frocks Delight (Most) Critics; Luca Luca Falls Flat

From left: Jason Wu, Charlotte Ronson, and Luca Luca.

Early reviews from the spring 2010 shows are mainly positive, with a few sharply worded low points.

Jason Wu
Most critics heaped fawning praise on Jason Wu's confident, feminine collection of demure tweed and tulle day dresses and feathered frocks, with the exception of Cathy Horyn. "WOW," gushed British Vogue. WWD saw "greater surety and sophistication" than in past collections. "The clothes – they'll sell," predicted the Wall Street Journal, owing to easy wearability and luxe fabrics that "look like a million bucks." (Although "maybe they'll cost that much.") Fashion Wire Daily praised Wu's creative use of feathers and crystals to flatter the "shape and motion of the female form." But grumpy Cathy Horyn felt the collection had a certain "banality" and found the clothes too prissy, comparing them to fussy truffles: "Have you ever become completely irritated by a box of chocolate? You know the kind: concept chocolate, artfully arranged in a just-so box, flavors exotic and trying."

Watch a slideshow of the Jason Wu collection.

Charlotte Ronson
Charlotte Ronson's eclectic mash-up of tulle, acid-washed denim, studs, and shoulder pads won raves from the critics. Fashion Wire Daily deemed the collection "deliciously downtown," and "well in step with the current edgy, moody lady zeitgeist." "This was Ronson's strongest collection yet," declared the WSJ, and full of clothes fit for a "take-no-prisoners pretty girl." From the "cotton-candy tulip skirts" to a "hell-bent leather bomber ... it all worked seamlessly," lauded Fashion Week Daily. ("These ballerinas are downtown girls," agreed Style.com.)

Luca Luca
The critics came down hard on Luca Luca's seventies-inspired spring collection. It was "riddled with ruffles, force-fed with predictable cuts, and staged with little real enthusiasm," groused Fashion Wire Daily, calling the show "a poor advertisement for American fashion." The seventies isn't a decade that is "currently trending in the fashion world," noted Style.com, complaining that the clothes "didn't offer a clear new way of looking at the reference." WWD offered faint praise, admiring "glimpses of strong workmanship" in a yellow pleated skirt and matching jacket but calling short, bright blue and yellow jersey dresses the "weak link." Style.com called out "costumey" wide-leg jumpsuits and high-waisted trousers, as well as "awkward" and "out of place" funnel-necked suits. "Where great collections can soar, this one stumbled around."

Watch a slideshow of the Luca Luca collection.

Nicole Miller
Nicole Miller's "streamlined, sporty, and sexy" spring collection was deemed a success by the critics. Style.com loved the "marketable idea" of "body con that wasn't too 'body,'" with admirably restrained graphic cutouts and sheer paneling. The pieces fused "nighttime sparkle with athleticism" Fashion Week Daily declared, lauding a collection that was "at once delicate and bold." Miller went "full throttle" with an urban, slightly aggressive aesthetic, sending out a lineup for "ladies who are lean and mean in the best possible way," WWD said. On the downside, British Vogue voiced a common sentiment: "The fashion envelope was far from pushed."

Jesus Luz Will Walk Y-3

Jesus in June in Milan.

Madonna man-candy and Dolce & Gabbana model Jesus Luz will not sit New York Fashion Week out. We can exclusively reveal that he'll strut his lovely manly lumps on the Y-3 runway at the Park Avenue Armory tomorrow at 5 p.m. Madonna is not on the tip sheet, but that's probably a good thing, since Jesus, who doesn't walk too many shows, will be nervous enough. He has to put one foot in front of the other, after all.

Allie Crandell Leaves The City

The City premieres next week, but not with Allie Crandell. "I'm done with The City forever!" she declared last night at the Ruby Kobo party. On the upside, Allie is no longer dating her bad boyfriend. "He turned out to be something that I didn't know he was. It was pretty heartbreaking," she admits. "I'm trying to focus on myself and mingle in New York City and focus on my career." But that doesn't mean the model isn't on the prowl for a new love, provided he knows how to behave: "I'm done with boys — I'm onto men!" Allie had attended Whitney Port's show the night before, but don't expect to see her out anytime soon with Olivia Palermo — who, by the way, is "definitely edited to be bitchier than she is in real life." But still. "I never hung out with her," says Allie. "The only thing that brought us together was the show."

The U.S. Census Dumps Acorn via E-mail

The U.S. Census Bureau officially severed ties with the community-organizing organization Acorn after the apparent last straw that was this week's "pimps and hos" scandal. In a letter (but there was probably also an e-mail!) to Acorn, U.S. Census director Robert Groves said Acorn had become a "distraction" that might negatively impact the 2010 census. And who's to blame the U.S. Census for smiling a big wincey smile while stepping slowly away from an organization that has become, at least PR-wise, the Lindsay Lohan of community groups? Pile On the Prints

The season is just days in, and already prints are dominating the runway. But these aren't your usual plaids or polka dots. We're seeing great swathes of color akin to Van Gogh's Starry Night or, for a more sartorial reference, last season's Balenciaga prints. Charlotte Ronson mixed blue, pink, and black, while Nicole Miller swirled together earth tones. Cynthia Rowley and Cynthia Steffe used hues inspired by flowers, but Ports 1961 stuck to mixing the neutrals, like black, white, and gray. BCBG Max Azria outdid them all, with prints on more than half the looks in the show. Click ahead to see all these looks.

‘365 Days of Working Out’: A Motivational Video

A Motivational "Tool."

Some guy took a picture of himself every day for a year as he transformed his body through the magic of exercise. If you look past the necklace, fake-tan, and extremely unfortunate (yet mercifully brief) bleach-blond phase, you'll find a good motivational tool. Suddenly that $400 David Barton deposit doesn't seem so steep. And this video is proof that working out improves one's taste in boxer shorts!

Tea-Bagging Rally on Washington Starts Out, Will End Up, Crazy

This weekend will no doubt bear forth a bounty of cringe-inducing video from today's anti-big-government rally on Washington. (There are already reports of "pushing and shoving" and "signs in poor taste"!) What truly motivates these people to rise from the couch on a gloomy Saturday, hastily fashion a "What Would Hitler Do?" sign in the garage, and turn their cars in the direction of our capital for such a vague "cause," we will probably never know. Though a few people have some pretty good theories! Anyway, this morning, after getting drowned out by the angry mob's cries of "Tell the Truth!" CNN reporter Lisa Desjardins gave up on a traditional live report and attempted to address the crowd directly about their feelings on Joe Wilson. What followed will be irritatingly familiar to anyone who has ever seen a middle-school principal try to begin a school assembly.

(The true insanity begins at 02:30.)
