The Chak De casting director Abhimanyu Ray was debutant director Rupali Guha's savior. After Rupali saw the way the new girls had been cast in Chak De, she gathered the courage to make her first film Aamras with four new girls.
"After Chak De, I was adamant. It had to be fresh faces no matter how much the pressure to get stars. I'm glad I stuck to my guns. The four news girls Vega, Natasha, Manvi and Aanchal are the backbone of my film about girl bonding."
Debutant director Rupali Ganguly has a hard act to follow up. Her father is the formidably prolific Basu Chatterjee and her father-in-law is the equally-formidable Dulal Guha. Both legendary in their own right.
And yet Rupali had to knock from door to door to get her first screenplay approved. "I went to everyone from UTV onwards. They all said, 'Who'll watch this film?' Or worse, 'Get Shahid Kapoor to play the boyfriend.' How could I fit Shahid Kapoor into a film about the bonding among four 18-year old girls played by four absolutely new faces?"
The story of Aamras was born from debutant director Rupali Guha's 13-year old daughter's Jonaki's experiences.
Says the director, "When I was growing up, I had just one best friend and then I had my family. My daughter has a circle of eleven close friends from different strata of society. And she comes home with very different experiences. I needed to understand her world of incompatible emotions. Aamras has given me a chance to open up my daughter's world."
Next, Rupali is working on script called Cinderella about a girl's dreams of a Prince Charming falling to pieces.
Regrettably, Rupali's father Basuda is in Kolkata and has not seen the complete film. "I can't wait for his reaction," says the nervous daughter, and a mother whose daughter is nervously wondering how much of her life her mom has put on screen.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 11 Sep 2009 | 7:12 am Shiney's bail plea rejected again

Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 11 Sep 2009 | 6:52 am "Dia got portfolio done especially for Acid Factory " - Suparn Verma
Even though Dia Mirza is the sole leading lady of Suparn Verma directed Acid Factory, the fact is that it took some convincing on her part before the filmmaker agreed to rope her in for a challenging part that she gets to enact in the film. The story goes that initially Suparn wasn't too enthusiastic about Dia being the perfect fit for a character of a sexy-n-tough girl. However, on being advised by producer Sanjay Gupta, he agreed to give her a shot.
"Frankly, it took some time before Dia was finalised for the part. Sanjay (Gupta) did suggest her name but he didn't want to force his decision on me. He just asked me to meet her when she came in to visit us at the office. I sat down with her for a while and it was instant love from that point on", smiles Suparn who remembers the efforts that Dia put in to perfect the personality that the character demanded.
"She had actually gone through the pain of getting a portfolio done especially for Acid Factory. She opened the file and asked me if she looked like the character that I had in mind", remembers Suparn, "I was so convinced in those few minutes itself that I just gave her a hug and began my narration."
Giving the reason behind his initial apprehension, Suparn reveals, "When Dia asked me about my reservations, I told her that she looked like a fragile beauty and I get a protective feeling towards her. On the other hand, the character that she was expected to play in the film was that of a bit%h. Of course! That would have meant a major metamorphosis on her part and I wasn't too sure if I could see her or shoot her that way. It was difficult to present Dia in such a manner."
He is of course quite ecstatic about the final results. "I am glad that she eventually went on to play the part as she gave her 200% to the film. She trained hard, changed her entire expressions and body language for the role and understood her character perfectly well. She was one of the boys on the sets", concludes Suparn.
Boasting of an all male cast comprising of Fardeen Khan, Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Dino Morea, Aftab Shivdasani and Danny Denzongpa, Acid Factory is Suparn's second directorial outing after Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena [Fardeen Khan, Koena Mitra] that released in 2005.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 11 Sep 2009 | 6:41 am Priyanka Chopra wants 'Dhan Te Nan' in female voice
After the success of Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Dhan Te Nan' in Kaminey, Priyanka Chopra is keen to have a female voice to the song. The actress had a word with the director and they soon plan to record the song with a female singer.
A source reveals, "Priyanka was in love with the song the moment she heard it. She always used to dance and sing on the sets to the song. PC complained to Vishal of being biased to Shahid Kapoor and giving him such a peppy song. At a recent award function, Priyanka chose to dance on this number even though it was a male voice."
The source continues, "Piggy Chops has now requested the director to have a female version recorded to the earliest so that she can dance to the tunes of this song at various functions. Currently, the director and Priyanka are busy with the various other commitments, but will soon record a female voice."
A source close to Priyanka reveals, "Priyanka totally loves the song and has spoken to director Vishal sir for having a female voice to the song. Nothing has been finalized but hopefully one will hear the female version soon with PC dancing to it."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 11 Sep 2009 | 6:20 am Ajay Devgan whips himself in London Dreams
When Ajay Devgan first heard he had to whip himself in London Dreams, he couldn't believe his ears. Once he accepted this startling form of self-protest considering it was essential to the plot, Ajay went all out and flogged himself black and blue for continuous 8 hours.
Says Vipul, "We had a detailed discussion. Audience could easily end up laughing at what is meant to be a moment of extreme self-loathing. Ajay was very concerned about the way he would look whipping himself on screen. I assured him that we'd shoot the sequence in a way that would look nothing less than stunning."
It's a sequence where an impulsive emotional character punishes himself. Says Vipul, "It is sequence of repentance. But it is not religious. I saw self-flagellation as a perfectly-defining moment for the character. It's not done with a whip. It's done with a belt, that Ajay hit himself powerfully with. Once or twice I called out 'cut', but Ajay didn't want to go for a cut. He didn't want to go through the experience in pieces. It was that harrowing for him."
Vipul continues, "And that too for a shot which would last no more than 25 seconds on screen. I'd tell him that we should stop. But Ajay insisted on doing it non-stop. We didn't want the aesthetics to be lost. I've never taken longer on any sequence."
Explaining the act Vipul says, "It's not a very macho thing to do. And it certainly goes against the image of an action hero as well as a comic hero. Quite naturally, Ajay was zapped when he heard that he was to do a sequence which requires him to whip his own self as an act of punishment."
Self-flagellation is a very Islamic concept. But Ajay doesn't play a Muslim character in London Dreams. "I'd be very alarmed if people see it in a religious light. It'd just show we're cynical about religion. I just wanted to show a completely incredible expression of the character's intensity. Ajay plays a very intense and emotional character that shocks people with his extreme behaviour. I want to shock the audience. Ajay's character is one on the edge. I had to show that edginess. And considering its Ajay Devgan, audience will be doubly shocked. Ajay is such a chilled out, in control person. People don't expect him punish himself on screen. But I'd rather let the character define its actions than the actor ands his image."
Ajay in fact expressed the same reservations. No protagonist has been shown violating himself so brutally.
Does Vipul expect censor trouble? "I expect trouble from the censors any time."
Right before we see Ajay Devgan whipping himself on October 30, we get Devgan whipping up some laughs in All The Best.
Says Vipul, "In a span of two weeks, audiences will see Ajay in two drastically different roles. If London Dreams was funny, I'd be nervous. Mine is a completely different film from All The Best. London Dreams is my most intense film till date. And if Ajay is the only leading man to whip himself, I'd say he has guts."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 11 Sep 2009 | 6:02 am Bollywood film Black is third at Korean box office

The squeals and screams start even before the guest of honour begins to descend the stairs to the club floor where the party goers have been awaiting his arrival for over an hour. By the time he reaches the last step the crowd has swelled to a heaving mass with everyone trying to get near him, touch him, take his pictures and plead for autographs. That's Dino Morea for you. We call him the Indian Film Industry's Italian Stallion. Women want to go on their knees after meeting him; men want to imitate every bit of his style. A true impressionist! We've seen him attack his popcorn roles with infectious relish and yet generate manic electricity when it comes to wham-bams too. Demonstrating his famous charm while sitting in his ripped jeans and a printed tee, Dino looked every bit drop-dead gorgeous. Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent and UK's Harrow Observer columnist Devansh Patel met Mr Slick at the 'White Feather Films' office in Andheri for a quick acid test. The result - Dino passed with a distinction.
What's the Italian Stallion doing these days?
Italian Stallion is being an Indian, working too hard and hoping that Acid Factory does well. Then I've got Pyaar Impossible where I do a special appearance, and of course, talking to few other producers regarding some interesting cinema.
When was the last time you lost your memory?
Well, lots of times. I have missed my meetings because I completely forgot about them. Hence I carry my file now-a-days. I write down everything including my plan for the day.
So after what Kaminey did, will the audiences open up and accept such cinema?
It's time they did. Overseas audiences are still caught up in their own world, their own era where they are living in weddings, colourful songs, etc. That's passé. But they like such films. For them to open up to Acid Factory kind of films, will take a good few years. Yet, you might have a handful who would appreciate it, but the bulk of the audience are stuck in that era of love, romance and comedy.
Is Dino Morea a risk taker?
I am a risk taker. I've always pushed the envelope a bit. People ask why I experiment. The answer I give is that I should like a story and I'll do whichever film comes my way. I don't care whether the film does well or not. Now, I'm being a bit more selective and want to work with banners who'd promote my movie.
And who's shouting in Acid Factory?
Everybody is shouting in Acid Factory (laughs)
Dia is looking hot, isn't she?
Yes she is. She is a stunner! I hope things change for her big time because she has made an effort, a big effort. She is an interesting actress and a thorough professional. I'm sure Acid Factory will do wonders for Dia.
Don't you think films like Acid Factory should be doing the rounds of the festival circuit?
Acid Factory has got a lot of commercial appeal to it. It's an interesting story. On the festival front, I don't know what kind of films are short listed and why. At the moment, producers are sending all their films to festivals, whether it's a commercial film or a so called art house cinema. I think Acid Factory should travel around the world and be a part of all the major film festivals. I also think that festival movies are deep rooted within their culture. So if I make a film based out of rural India, I'm sure the festival people will love it.

It's an anomaly in the world of awards. An award for the animators and by the animators, at the TASI Viewer's Choice Awards (TVCA) the audience will vote and reward the best of animation from India and abroad. The awards are one of the main attractions of India's largest animation festival, Anifest India 2009, scheduled for 18-20 September '09 in Mumbai.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Ranjit Singh, Honorary Secretary of The Animation Society of India, the organizers, said, "The awards were initiated with a two fold objective: to ensure that the collected audience at the festival get to see the best animation work from across the globe and to choose the winners through a popular vote given by the audience, thereby staying true to the philosophy of the festival - 'For the animators, By the animators'."
"It's definitely a bigger high to be recognized and felicitated by your peers. The awards are now in their third year and the audience can look forward to some really interesting work from all over the world."
TASI has received 360+ entries for the awards, including those from Singapore and the US, which will be adjudged in separate student, independent professional, commissioned and teacher's film categories.
Talking about the X-factor of the awards, Vaibhav Kumaresh, Honorary Jt. Secretary asserted, "In most of the animation festivals, we see the film makers walk up and down the stage with awards. However we rarely get to see their films! TASI Viewers Choice Awards is a unique platform, where the audience gets to see not just the nominated films, but the entire cream of the past one year's animation films across all categories. The maverick filmmaker N Chandra is a lonely man today. He has recently completed a script on an intense passionate romantic story between a boy from a broken home and a girl from a well-to-do family.
He has named the film Fire & Ice and would like to cast Shahid Kapoor opposite his old friend Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam in it.
Alas! The doors to the gen-next stars are closed to N Chandra.
"I thought the doors would re-open for me after Yeh Mera India. But sadly, not too many people saw it. It was a film that I did in a completely contemporary language. There is a belief that I haven't kept up with the times, that I'm a spent force. I may have made Ankush, Pratighaat and Tezaab in the past. But that was then. I don't follow contemporary cinema's language. I made Yeh Mera India in a very contemporary European style. The cameraman was an American."
Now, in Fire & Ice, Chandra claims to use a form of narration never used before. "It's non-linear and in a way never seen before. It's contemporary. I need a particular kind of personality for the two main parts."
Getting Sonam should be less difficult for Chandra than getting Shahid. After all Sonam's father, Anil Kapoor, teamed up for one of his best films Tezaab with Chandra.
"But that was in the past. Things have changed. This is a new generation, a new era in filmmaking. Everyone has their own favourites," says Chandra, hastily adding. It's explode-y, bite-y, and dance-y and rather brilliant..."
Director Anthony D'Souza, who will head to Hollywood's Warner Brothers Studios later this month for the mixing of Blue, is over the moon. "Michael Adams is like the last word on Hollywood opinion. Blue is the first Bollywood film to be mentioned in his column."
And now the one-stop showbiz media mecca Empire has invited Blue to be featured in their magazine.
"Yes, Empire magazine will be featuring Blue. It's a singular honour. And I'm thrilled," says Anthony.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 10 Sep 2009 | 4:12 am Chitrangda Singh was original choice for The Unforgettable
Chitrangda Singh was the original choice of director Arsala Qureishi and Sabrina Louis, of The Unforgettable. The directors did try to reach out to her, but Chitrangda who had withdrawn into matrimony and parenthood wasn't keen on cinema at that point in time.
Say debutant directors Arsala and Sabrina, "Chitrangda Singh was our original choice. But she was not keen on doing movies at that point of time. Dejected by this, we moved to foreign shores and opted for the stunning Sofia Hayat. Sofia, who just had her autobiography released by Amazon, was more than happy to slide into the role."
As things turned out, Arsala had to make some changes to suit Sofia's persona and also make the script sexually explicit to lend strength to the character. It was but obvious that, had she cast Chitrangda, Arsala's script would have had to do without the hot scenes, which are now realised to be integral to the storyline.
The Unforgettable is all set to release in India on the 11th of September 2009. It is an unusual passionate love story that depicts the stark contrasts in individual beliefs, interwoven in a web of romance, mystery, travesty and triumph. The thought provoking concept and aesthetically executed cinematography by W.B. Rao has lent an incredible sensuality to the love story.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 10 Sep 2009 | 3:59 am Saif's acting has improved by leaps and bounds: Sharmila TagoreVeteran actress Sharmila Tagore loves watching her son's films as any mother does and feels his acting has improved phenomenally over the years.Source: Entertainment News | 10 Sep 2009 | 3:09 am
