Bengali film which picked Namastey London scenes asked to deposit its collections

Katrina Kaif On Tuesday morning, the appeals court in Kolkata ordered that the entire Box-Office collections of the Bengali film Poran Jay Jolaye Re be deposited in the court. The film which was released a couple of months ago to a rousing welcome in Bengal is said to have so far collected whopping figures at the Box-Office. By depositing the entire collection at the Box-Office, the producers Venkatesh Films of the Bengali film stand to lose a substantial amount of money. Says Vipul, "They've to deposit every single penny that the film has collected. The judgment of the appeals court says that the 'entire' Box-Office collection of the Bengali film be deposited in court. It is historic in terms of violation of copyright infringement. To know the court can stop a film is a clear signal that plagiarism can be fought. The judgment will now be a reference point for all plagiarism cases. It was needed. Every filmmaker contemplating plagiarism will now think twice." The alleged copyright violators of the Bengali film can now appeal in the Supreme Court. As for the money that the court has confiscated from the Bengali film's collection, it is now legally a part of a damage suit that Vipul chooses to file. "However I don't want any monetary compensation. That wasn't my intention. I wanted to make a strong case against copyright infringement. The honourable court has done the needful. I think its victory for all us filmmakers. We used to make a joke about copyright laws by saying copyright means the right to copy. I think the joke has now ended." Akshay Kumar who's the co-producer of Namastey London has decided not to sign any film that he knows to be an illegal copy Says Akshay, "By God's grace, all my films seem to be original. Even Vipul's Action Replay which some people think is a copied from elsewhere (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) is original. People who spread these rumours should be careful. Copying films is as serious an offence as accusing an original work of being a copy."

Sanjay Dutt to join IPL; may buy upcoming Ahmedabad or Nagpur team

Sanjay Dutt When Sanjay Dutt met Lalit Modi to buy a new cricket team for himself, he wasn't aware that the media would be informed and waiting for him at the hotel in suburban Mumbai. Apparently, the media is duly informed every time a superstar decides to negotiate for an IPL team. Says a source, "The idea is to let it be known that big stars are getting progressively involved with the IPL. That attracts more money, eyeballs and junta interest. So on Wednesday evening when Dutt reached the Hyatt, he was taken aback to see media persons swarming the place. His first impulse was to flee." However, Dutt had a fruitful meeting with Modi where he discussed his apprehensions and curiosities about purchasing an IPL team. Says the source, "Sanjay's main concern was, would he be able to buy the team because of his court cases? There are many things that he can't do, like endorsements, etc. Sanjay was assured there would be no problem. With the removal of TADA charges, Dutt now has right equal to every other Indian citizen." Having got that apprehension out of the way, Dutt questioned Lalit Modi about the nitty-gritty of the IPL team. There're two new teams in Ahmedabad and Nagpur coming up in December. Sanjay might buy either," informs the source. There are efforts now to optimize celebrity participation and generation of money through star presence in the IPL. It is reliably learnt that Shah Rukh Khan, for example, will be charging neat packets from the aam janta for attending matches and post-match events like dinners where the closer the janta sits to the star, the more it will cost. Preity Zinta has recently taken on a television show where she'll be seen hobnobbing interacting and conversing with all her IPL cricketers. She had made a neat packet from the deal with Star Plus. "So you see the stars are working towards building a bigger bucks bank for the IPL," says the source.

Shilpa Shetty is frantically learning Indian recipes for her restaurant business

Shilpa Shetty Shilpa is India's new mistress of spices to Britain. And she's taking her job very seriously. It looks like a sabbatical from acting for Shilpa as she gets busy in her new role as an international cuisine queen. And the best thing about her new role is, Shilpa doesn't want to go the Tarla Dalal or Madhur Jaffrey way. No instant cook books for the latest recipe Rani. Shilpa wants to go the whole hog. On the lookout for the rarest and most exotic and undiscovered dishes Shilpa will now cruise to the remotest parts of India in search of new recipes. In coming months and years, Shilpa hopes to spread the aroma of Indian spices and curries to every part of the world. In her new avatar as the part-owner of a reputed chain of restaurants and Indian cuisine in Britain, Shilpa Shetty is adamant to prove she is not just a glamorous name for the franchise as she was accused of being in cricket. Shilpa intends to lend not just her name and glamorous persona to her new food-brand 'Shilpa's Gourmet Creations' she's also determined to be a hands-on mistress of spices. The lady currently more an entrepreneur than an actress, is learning as many recipes from Britain's celebrity chef Andy Varma as she can. Once she returns to India, Shilpa will enter her mom's kitchen and get to part with all her famous secret recipes. Says Shilpa excitedly from London. "Everyone presumed I was as big a novice at cuisine. Not true. I've always enjoyed cooking. And I love cooking for my friends and family. Now with Raj (Kundra) and me becoming part of Andy Varma's chain, my interest in cooking has turned into a passion." Shilpa has now gone from skimming through trade magazines to scrutinizing recipe books. The dishy actress is learning new dishes everyday from master chef Andy Varma Determined not to let the cynics snigger about her new role as cuisine queen, Shilpa says, "You'd be surprised to know how popular Indian food is in England. Do you know the country's favourite dish is chicken tikka masala? I want them to discover our food beyond the obvious currys and biryanis. And all our Indian snacks and meals will contain under 10 percent fat." To discover the food of India, Shilpa is now a complete foodie. "Not eating, but preparing. Nowadays I'm a sucker for recipes." Poppadom in Memorium. That could well be the signature chant for Shilpa Shetty's new avatar as a cuisine queen. From being called a 'poppadom' by Jade Goody to providing bonus papads with her new lineup of cuisine in Britain, Shilpa has come a long way. And she doesn't deny it. "It's true. Jade, God bless her soul, used to call me 'Poppadam' on Big Brother. It used to hurt. Today we've papad as bonus for all the snacks and meals that I'm associated with. It's really ironic." However, she stresses that her food offer is in no way homage to Jade Goody, as reported in the British press.

Priyanka Chopra signed as Brand Ambassador for Levis

We all know that life in Bollywood is one roller coaster ride. The fate of every actor changes with every passing Friday. The same is the case with Priyanka Chopra, who, after having a shaky start, has now become the eternal reigning Queen of Bollywood. With Fashion and Dostana as the latest additions in her kitty, Piggy Chops has never had it so good (read ‘best’). She, in no time, became the ‘Face’ of a million products...practically every second FMCG product! According to Bollywood Hungama’s confirmed sources, the latest addition in her kitty is the international denim brand Levis, which has allegedly signed Priyanka for an astronomical amount! If that wasn’t enough, our sources also added that the company has even roped in the ace fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani, who will be on board for a special edition of the denims called ‘Diva’. One must admit that, the real cool thing about this endorsement deal is that, after having signed up with Akshay Kumar, Shahid Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut and Deepika Padukone, the story only gets more masaledaar with Priyanka Chopra coming on board!

Nikhil Dwivedi Nikhil Dwivedi has shaved himself bald for Mani Ratnam's Raavan. The actor was initially hesitant, but director Mani, being a professional made him go clean. A source revels, "Nikhil plays the role of a cop. Ravi Kissen, who plays Abhishek Bachchan's brother in the movie, is shaving him off bald for revenge in the film. Nikhil was reluctant and was not willing to go bald. Mani sir explained him the importance of the scene and after having a discussion with the director for over an hour the actor agreed and went thin on top." The source continues, "After the Ooty shoot minus Govinda, the crew is currently shooting in Malshej Ghats, on Pune- Nashik highway. Shatrughan Sinha and Hema Malini on Salman's Dus Ka Dum

Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha The last time we saw them together on screen, it was for Manoj Kumar's Santosh in 1989. Now Shatrughan Sinha and Hema Malini are back together on television show 'Dus Ka Dum' apparently on Shatru's insistence. Salman Khan's very popular game show 'Dus Ka Dum' has bonus guests. In an additional episode that was shot on Sunday (August 30), Salman brought two of his favourite people Shatrughan Sinha and Hema Malini, both BJP workers, together for what turned out to be quite a show of strength. And Shatru dressed in a long- flowing Sherwani was playfully asked by Salman if this was the Nehru code of dressing. The actor never short of retorts replied, "No nowadays it's known as the Jinnah code of dressing." This was an obvious reference to the BJP's current claim to controversy for expelling Jaswant Singh from the party for writing a book on Jinnah. When asked about the incident, Shatrughan Sinha laughed, "Yes, this did happen. I did refer to my dress code on 'Dus Ka Dum' as the Jinnah style of dressing. Salman had been keen on inviting me and Hemaji together for a long time. We decided to go on the show as the grand finale." Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha Speaking out for the first time on the Jinnah controversy, Shatrughan Sinha says, "I've so far kept quiet. But now I'll say this much. How can a senior member of a party be expelled for writing a book which no one had written? And how can a politician not be allowed to have a personal ideology? I play so many roles. If tomorrow after watching me play a dacoit, some youth decides to rob a bank, does it mean I should give up acting?" Reverting to 'Dus Ka Dum' Shatru says, "I was asked which is my favourite party. I said when I'm invited to Hemaji's house, I love the tea party that we have. When I'm invited to her other half Dharamji's home, I love the drinking party there. So it's all very flexible." The Shatru-Hema episode of 'Dus Ka Dum' will be aired as the grand finale. "When it's me and Hema it cannot be anything less," is Shatru's parting shot.

Filmmakers setting aside Rs.100 crores dream?

My Name Is Khan Rs. 80 crores... Rs. 90 crores... Rs. 100 crores... Rs.120 crores. It seemed like an auction in progress a year and a half back when biggies were announced and being (apparently) sold at these prices even without a frame being shot. Just on the power of banner, star cast, director, scale, set up and the vision for release, there were at least half a dozen films that were pretty much touted to be the next BIG blockbusters in the making. My Name Is Khan, Ghajini, Blue, Kites, Kambakkht Ishq, London Dreams and 3 Idiots were some such films that had a lot riding on them. Actually quite a lot! All of this was before recession hit the entire world and along with that, showed its ugly face to the (vulnerable) film industry. Suddenly there was a panic button being pressed and renegotiations became the order of the day. Whether it was a big or a small film, each of them was impacted. Apart from the fact that audiences were now expected to visit theaters less frequently due to slowdown in the market, film industry also took a major hit with satellite prices going down due to huge cut downs in ad revenues. The films were still as exciting as before. Audiences still wanted to watch an Aamir in a Ghajini and 3 Idiots. Akshay still had fans rooting for him in films as diverse as Kambakkht Ishq and Blue. Vipul Shah still carried his Midas touch from the days of Namastey London, Waqt and Aankhen into London Dreams. Hrithik didn't loose any of his appeal for Kites which was being pitched for international markets. In the meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar continued to entice audiences with their promise of treading a remarkably different path from the world of candy-floss to a realistic My Name Is Khan. London Dreams The only thing that changed (and a major change at that)? Market dynamics. The attractive, though grossly over the top, price tags of Rs. 80/100/120 crores were now out of question. Yes, Ghajini reportedly did manage to net close to Rs.120 crores just from India but the biggest supporters and haters of Aamir Khan would agree that it was 'once in a couple of years' kind of phenomenon that was witnessed in Ghajini. Yes, a film tomorrow may do similar business again but it was too much to expect similar outcome for each of the 6-8 biggies that would be arriving in next 6 odd months. Frankly, the prices had to fall and the result is that talks around all those Rs.100 crores deals have fallen silent. And even as the prices are being renegotiated (and been agreed upon as well), it is all been done in the hush-hush tone. Says a top filmmaker who wishes to be unnamed, "What we have learnt from this entire turn of events is that we should stop going gaga about our films and declare them as Rs.100 crores blockbusters when we are yet to shoot a single scene. What's the point in pricing your film so high and becoming greedy when you don't know about how the market would behave tomorrow? Yes, charge high but only after your film is ready and you know the market dynamics in the current times. Go ahead, ask for big money, but don't kill the distributor on the table itself and risk the film going down as unsuccessful at the box office due to wafer thin margin of error. Let it be a win-win situation for everyone." Blue This is one good step that the makers of Blue have recently taken. Though there is no official word yet, indications are that this Rs. 65 crores film (which was being widely publicized to be made on a 100 crores budget) is being released by the producers on a commission basis. Comments a trade expert, "If this has indeed happened then I would say good sense has prevailed for the makers here. It's a nice approach since it ensures that if there are profits, they are for all while producers own up losses, if any. A Rs. 65 crores tag looks reasonable enough and the recovery should also not be a problem, especially so since the film carries an international appeal. However, if only they would have continued with their Rs.100 crores fixation, it would have been a dicey situation." Last heard, even Kites and 3 Idiots have not crossed the elusive Rs.100 crores mark. Even London Dreams is no more nurturing Rs.100 crores + dreams and as per Vipul Shah, the maker of the film, he is happy to go back to the old school method of selling the film to various distributors across the country. "Yes, earlier there were talks of Rs.120 crores with Indian Films. However, that deal is no more happening. In any case, I am not dependent on the corporate houses to see my film release in theaters. I have enough distributors across the country who are willing to pick the film and I am more than glad to release the film through them", Vipul stated recently. With My Name Is Khan already sold, Blue apparently making the first move when it comes to a film being released on a commission basis and London Dreams too moving ahead with Plan B, it has to be seen if other biggies in the pipeline also follow suit.

Salman has shot for 30 public awareness films as part of Wanted promotions

Click above for movie stills Trust Salman Khan to always court extremes. Till date, he never did a short film on any public issue. But now, starting next month, we'll see him in as many as 30 of these films on television one after another, all for a cause. Salman Khan has never done so much media publicity before, and there's a good reason for it. Almost all the marketing for Wanted will benefit Salman's new charity concern Being Human in one way or another. In fact Boney Kapoor's company has created 30 public-awareness short films with Salman which will begin airing a week before the release of Wanted. These films will have Salman addressing the public about social issues such as drugs, old people, crime, etc. Boney says, "Its true, Salman's keen interest in marketing Wanted has a lot to do with his newly-discovered craving for organized social work. This was a side of Salman that always existed. It just needed to be harnessed. Earlier too he contributed hugely to charitable and social causes. But not in this organized fashion." The 30 short films directed by Nikhil Saini are expected to give Salman a new image. He has always been seen to have the picture of an enfant-terrible. Now Salman wants to change that. He has seen his colleagues create public awareness. Now it's his turn. Says Boney, "About time. The 30 short films will be unleashed in quick succession one after another. Salman is one of the best human beings I've met. We first bonded over Vodka and Barcardi in Hyderabad when he was shooting for Judwaa and I for Judaai. Later I asked him to do a 2-day appearance in Sirf Tum. He immediately agreed. When I asked his fee he said he wanted another drinking session like the one in Hyderabad. Then he did No Entry for me at time when I was going through a low. Even for Milenge Milenge he agreed to a cameo until he opted out for whatever reason." Salman had abandoned the project because of differences with Shahid Kapoor. Says Boney, "For Wanted, we wanted Salman to completely abandon the bad boy image. Salman is a youth icon. And those 30 short films on public issues we've produced will project him as a responsible citizen and an icon who knows his duties."

"Chintu Ji is part fiction, part reality and part illusion" - Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor has been having an eventful year so far. He got superb response in films like Love Aaj Kal and Luck By Chance, some flak for Kal Kissne Dekha and left audiences wanting for more in Delhi 6. Even as Love Aaj Kal continues to run in theaters, Rishi Kapoor is now making a comeback as a central protagonist in Chintu Ji. Interestingly, the film's name is derived from Rishi Kapoor's nickname - 'Chintu'. Produced by Kaleidoscope Entertainment, the film - also starring Priyanshu Chatterjee and Kulraj Randhawa - is a comedy and is directed by debutant Ranjit Kapoor. As the film gears up for it's release this Friday, Rishi Kapoor talks to Joginder Tuteja about Chintu Ji, which as per him is 'part fiction, part reality and part illusion'. What is Chintu Ji all about? Is it an autobiography of the man called Rishi Kapoor who regaled the audience for three decades in a row (70s to 90s) as a leading hero? No, the film is not about the journey of Rishi Kapoor, a filmstar. It is about the moment in the life of this film star where he tries to do something new. It's his stint in politics which is covered in Chintu Ji. It was nice to see shades of my own life in the film's narrative though. Chintu Ji is about a filmstar who wants to contest elections from his hometown but isn't quite serious about politics Politics? Sounds interesting. Can you please elaborate? Chintu Ji is about a filmstar who wants to contest elections from his hometown but isn't quite serious about politics. At heart, he is still a brat that he has been throughout his life and his only motive is to mint money and make merry. Ironically, his entry in his village only ends up making life better for all there, even though it is by default than design. Does that mean that we are looking at an out and out tongue in cheek entertain? There is an entertainment quotient for sure. But then there is also some message that comes with the film. It states that if Government takes care of your basic necessities in villages and small towns as well, the inhabitants there won't be compelled to leave these places and go to cities with dreams of mega bucks. If at all there are enough jobs to keep people occupied and well off in villages, they will not be forced to leave their native place. Its matter of basic amenities like electricity, water, mobile facilities etc. being made available, that's it. If at all there are enough jobs to keep people occupied and well off in villages, they will not be forced to leave their native place So are there some reforms that eventually do come into play in the film? They do happen though unintentionally (laughs). My character doesn't quite have any intentions of reforming the life of the villagers. However, he does eventually bring in a turnaround even though it is done unknowingly. The film's script has been put together quite innovatively because it's quite a difficult task to build a story around a real life personality, add on elements of fiction to it and make it a cinematic engaging experience as well. The film also reflects the socio-economic-political state of India Today. Rishi Kapoor There has been quite some stir being created ever since it was revealed that Russian artist Kseniya Ryabinkina, who played Raj Kapoor's love interest (a trapeze artist) in the second chapter of Mera Naam Joker, is a part of Chintu Ji too. It was way back in 1970 when I played the role of younger Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker. It is interesting that 40 years later, I am coming along with her. Incidentally this will be only her second Hindi film since she appeared in Mera Naam Joker. In Chintu Ji, she has a very pivotal role to play as she brings along immense metamorphosis in the life of the character that I play. In Mera Naam Joker, you had your scenes mainly with Simi Grewal while it was Raj Kapoor who had closer interaction with Kseniya Ryabinkina. Does Chintu Ji see the two of you sharing screen space together? Yes, we do. It was a surreal experience because I was just a kid in Mera Naam Joker. I guess it was a great idea to get her on board in Chintu Ji which is a film that is part fiction, part reality and part illusion when it comes to it being based on my life. Though Chintu Ji has been ready for a while, the film is now seeing a sudden release. If a film is good then it will run. Also, it is a genuinely different film and carries certain spunk to it. It comes with a lot of potential to do well after word of mouth. Even though it's a small film, it comes with a good idea. I am very positive about its prospects.
