Music Written For Monkeys Strikes A Chord

Monkeys don't normally like human music. They prefer silence. But when researchers composed songs reminiscent of monkey vocalizations, the monkeys responded. This raises the philosophical question of what music really is and may bring us closer to writing ditties that appeal exclusively to other species.

Award-winning conductor Erich Kunzel has died at the age of 74. He had been diagnosed with liver, colon and pancreatic cancer in April. Kunzel headed the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra since it was founded three decades ago. Ford, Honda and Toyota report August sales surge; GM looks for a bright spot

Ford sales, boosted by the 'cash for clunkers' program, are up 17% from August 2008, while Honda sales rise 14.2% and Toyota is up 10.5%. GM falls 20%, but company still calls it an 'excellent' month.

Ford and its Japanese rivals Toyota and Honda all reported sharply higher sales in August as the wildly popular "cash for clunkers" promotion brought customers back into showrooms. But the program was less generous to other U.S. automakers.
