Rs. 80 crores... Rs. 90 crores... Rs. 100 crores... Rs.120 crores. It seemed like an auction in progress a year and a half back when biggies were announced and being (apparently) sold at these prices even without a frame being shot. Just on the power of banner, star cast, director, scale, set up and the vision for release, there were at least half a dozen films that were pretty much touted to be the next BIG blockbusters in the making.
My Name Is Khan, Ghajini, Blue, Kites, Kambakkht Ishq, London Dreams and 3 Idiots were some such films that had a lot riding on them. Actually quite a lot!
All of this was before recession hit the entire world and along with that, showed its ugly face to the (vulnerable) film industry. Suddenly there was a panic button being pressed and renegotiations became the order of the day. Whether it was a big or a small film, each of them was impacted. Apart from the fact that audiences were now expected to visit theaters less frequently due to slowdown in the market, film industry also took a major hit with satellite prices going down due to huge cut downs in ad revenues.
The films were still as exciting as before. Audiences still wanted to watch an Aamir in a Ghajini and 3 Idiots. Akshay still had fans rooting for him in films as diverse as Kambakkht Ishq and Blue. Vipul Shah still carried his Midas touch from the days of Namastey London, Waqt and Aankhen into London Dreams. Hrithik didn't loose any of his appeal for Kites which was being pitched for international markets. In the meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar continued to entice audiences with their promise of treading a remarkably different path from the world of candy-floss to a realistic My Name Is Khan.
The only thing that changed (and a major change at that)? Market dynamics.
The attractive, though grossly over the top, price tags of Rs. 80/100/120 crores were now out of question. Yes, Ghajini reportedly did manage to net close to Rs.120 crores just from India but the biggest supporters and haters of Aamir Khan would agree that it was 'once in a couple of years' kind of phenomenon that was witnessed in Ghajini. Yes, a film tomorrow may do similar business again but it was too much to expect similar outcome for each of the 6-8 biggies that would be arriving in next 6 odd months.
Frankly, the prices had to fall and the result is that talks around all those Rs.100 crores deals have fallen silent. And even as the prices are being renegotiated (and been agreed upon as well), it is all been done in the hush-hush tone.
Says a top filmmaker who wishes to be unnamed, "What we have learnt from this entire turn of events is that we should stop going gaga about our films and declare them as Rs.100 crores blockbusters when we are yet to shoot a single scene. What's the point in pricing your film so high and becoming greedy when you don't know about how the market would behave tomorrow? Yes, charge high but only after your film is ready and you know the market dynamics in the current times. Go ahead, ask for big money, but don't kill the distributor on the table itself and risk the film going down as unsuccessful at the box office due to wafer thin margin of error. Let it be a win-win situation for everyone."
This is one good step that the makers of Blue have recently taken. Though there is no official word yet, indications are that this Rs. 65 crores film (which was being widely publicized to be made on a 100 crores budget) is being released by the producers on a commission basis.
Comments a trade expert, "If this has indeed happened then I would say good sense has prevailed for the makers here. It's a nice approach since it ensures that if there are profits, they are for all while producers own up losses, if any. A Rs. 65 crores tag looks reasonable enough and the recovery should also not be a problem, especially so since the film carries an international appeal. However, if only they would have continued with their Rs.100 crores fixation, it would have been a dicey situation."
Last heard, even Kites and 3 Idiots have not crossed the elusive Rs.100 crores mark. Even London Dreams is no more nurturing Rs.100 crores + dreams and as per Vipul Shah, the maker of the film, he is happy to go back to the old school method of selling the film to various distributors across the country.
"Yes, earlier there were talks of Rs.120 crores with Indian Films. However, that deal is no more happening. In any case, I am not dependent on the corporate houses to see my film release in theaters. I have enough distributors across the country who are willing to pick the film and I am more than glad to release the film through them", Vipul stated recently.
With My Name Is Khan already sold, Blue apparently making the first move when it comes to a film being released on a commission basis and London Dreams too moving ahead with Plan B, it has to be seen if other biggies in the pipeline also follow suit.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 2 Sep 2009 | 6:31 am Ajab Prem ... to release on November 6

Last year, 13 of the most gorgeous ladies of tinsel town, viz., Yana Gupta, Aditi Govitrikar, Pooja Bedi, Sonali Kulkarni, Tupur Chatterjee, Sayali Bhagat, Nethra Raghuraman, Anjana Sukhani, Dippanita Sharma, Payal Rohatgi and Meghna Naidu had a ball of a lifetime with superstar Akshay Kumar a.k.a Khiladi Kumar as their host in the most adventurous game show on the telly land called âFear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladiâ, a show whereby these gorgeous ladies were subjected to the most meanest of tasks, in which some won whereas others âchic-kenedâ out! The final winner of last year turned out to be model-actress Nethra Raghuraman.
This year too, Akki is back with yet another set of 13 contestants (read âbevy of beautiesâ) viz. Bruna Abdullah, Sushma Reddy, Carol Gracias, Jesse Randhawa, Mandira Bedi, Nauheed Cyrusi, Rosa Catalano, Rupali Ganguly, Sonika Kaliraman, Shonali Nagrani, Pia Trivedi, Shveta Salve and Anushka Manchanda. Akki also adds that in the showâs second season, everything will be twice the excitement and twice the danger.
Akshay in his own words says that the second season of the show has everything in double, right from gruesomeness till the excitement. Well, with everything being double, one would also assume that the suspense about the winner is also double. But, not when Bollywood Hungama and its most reliable sources are around! If our sources are to be believed (and we have every reason to believe them), then, the winner for this season is the ex-VIVA member and the singing toast of the season Anushka Manchanda. Looking at the way her career is going these days, this win will only add more glitter to her already glittering cap. Way to go, Anushka!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 2 Sep 2009 | 5:00 am Oscar changes voting method for best picture

Trust Salman Khan to always court extremes. Till date, he never did a short film on any public issue. But now, starting next month, we'll see him in as many as 30 of these films on television one after another, all for a cause.
Salman Khan has never done so much media publicity before, and there's a good reason for it. Almost all the marketing for Wanted will benefit Salman's new charity concern Being Human in one way or another.
In fact Boney Kapoor's company has created 30 public-awareness short films with Salman which will begin airing a week before the release of Wanted. These films will have Salman addressing the public about social issues such as drugs, old people, crime, etc.
Boney says, "Its true, Salman's keen interest in marketing Wanted has a lot to do with his newly-discovered craving for organized social work. This was a side of Salman that always existed. It just needed to be harnessed. Earlier too he contributed hugely to charitable and social causes. But not in this organized fashion."
The 30 short films directed by Nikhil Saini are expected to give Salman a new image. He has always been seen to have the picture of an enfant-terrible. Now Salman wants to change that. He has seen his colleagues create public awareness. Now it's his turn.
Says Boney, "About time. The 30 short films will be unleashed in quick succession one after another. Salman is one of the best human beings I've met. We first bonded over Vodka and Barcardi in Hyderabad when he was shooting for Judwaa and I for Judaai. Later I asked him to do a 2-day appearance in Sirf Tum. He immediately agreed. When I asked his fee he said he wanted another drinking session like the one in Hyderabad. Then he did No Entry for me at time when I was going through a low. Even for Milenge Milenge he agreed to a cameo until he opted out for whatever reason." Salman had abandoned the project because of differences with Shahid Kapoor.
Says Boney, "For Wanted, we wanted Salman to completely abandon the bad boy image. Salman is a youth icon. And those 30 short films on public issues we've produced will project him as a responsible citizen and an icon who knows his duties."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 2 Sep 2009 | 4:36 am Shahid uncomfortable on 10 Ka Dum?Salman Khan and Shahid Kapoor shared bad vibes during the Rockstar tour three years ago. Rishi Kapoor has been having an eventful year so far. He got superb response in films like Love Aaj Kal and Luck By Chance, some flak for Kal Kissne Dekha and left audiences wanting for more in Delhi 6. Even as Love Aaj Kal continues to run in theaters, Rishi Kapoor is now making a comeback as a central protagonist in Chintu Ji. Interestingly, the film's name is derived from Rishi Kapoor's nickname - 'Chintu'. Produced by Kaleidoscope Entertainment, the film - also starring Priyanshu Chatterjee and Kulraj Randhawa - is a comedy and is directed by debutant Ranjit Kapoor. As the film gears up for it's release this Friday, Rishi Kapoor talks to Joginder Tuteja about Chintu Ji, which as per him is 'part fiction, part reality and part illusion'.
What is Chintu Ji all about? Is it an autobiography of the man called Rishi Kapoor who regaled the audience for three decades in a row (70s to 90s) as a leading hero?
No, the film is not about the journey of Rishi Kapoor, a filmstar. It is about the moment in the life of this film star where he tries to do something new. It's his stint in politics which is covered in Chintu Ji. It was nice to see shades of my own life in the film's narrative though.
There has been quite some stir being created ever since it was revealed that Russian artist Kseniya Ryabinkina, who played Raj Kapoor's love interest (a trapeze artist) in the second chapter of Mera Naam Joker, is a part of Chintu Ji too.
It was way back in 1970 when I played the role of younger Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker. It is interesting that 40 years later, I am coming along with her. Incidentally this will be only her second Hindi film since she appeared in Mera Naam Joker. In Chintu Ji, she has a very pivotal role to play as she brings along immense metamorphosis in the life of the character that I play.
In Mera Naam Joker, you had your scenes mainly with Simi Grewal while it was Raj Kapoor who had closer interaction with Kseniya Ryabinkina. Does Chintu Ji see the two of you sharing screen space together?
Yes, we do. It was a surreal experience because I was just a kid in Mera Naam Joker. I guess it was a great idea to get her on board in Chintu Ji which is a film that is part fiction, part reality and part illusion when it comes to it being based on my life.
Though Chintu Ji has been ready for a while, the film is now seeing a sudden release.
If a film is good then it will run. Also, it is a genuinely different film and carries certain spunk to it. It comes with a lot of potential to do well after word of mouth. Even though it's a small film, it comes with a good idea. I am very positive about its prospects.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 2 Sep 2009 | 4:07 am Suri to direct Puneet Rajkumar in LagoriThe latest buzz in Gandhinagar is that Duniya fame director Suri is reportedly set to direct Powerstar Puneet Rajkumar in the movie Lagori, which had hit the headlines for the conflict between director Yogaraj Bhat and producer Rockline Venkatesh over theSource: Oneindia.in - Entertainment | 2 Sep 2009 | 4:04 am Salman Khan loses his cool over Rani - Oneindia

He is an actor who has slowly but surely made a mark for himself in this industry with memorable performances in films like Qayamat, Shaadi Ka Laddoo and Dhamaal. Now he is all set to portray two completely different roles in two completely different films- Daddy Cool and Three-Love, Lies, Betrayal. Yes..ladies and gentlemen...we are talking about the extremely talented actor Ashish Chowdhry. Bollywood Hungama caught up with Ashish and got him talking on everything about his two new films- Daddy Cool and Three-Love, Lies, Betrayal.
Ashish... you have 2 releases in 2 weeks (Daddy Cool and Three- Love, Lies, Betrayal). How does it feel?
Its very exciting...2 films of mine are releasing within 6 days of each other (Three- Love, Lies, Betrayal) is releasing on Thursday 3rd Sept). Until these two films I have never had butterflies in my stomach. I always treated acting as a hobby since I even had a parallel business of my own. However over the last 6 months, I have become more and more serious towards my acting assignments and it's become more of a profession than a hobby. This is the first time I am getting the butterflies in my stomach. Fortunately or unfortunately two of my films are coming together. I don't really know if it's a good thing or a bad thing but the best part is that they are totally different films. One of them (Daddy Cool) is what I do a best- a multi-starrer comedy and the other one (Three- Love, Lies, Betrayal) is something which I have never done before- an intense role in a thriller.
Considering it a mad-cap comedy there sure must have been many funny moments on the sets. What was the funniest moment on the sets?
The funniest moment by far was when we pulled a prank on Aarti Chabria. Usually women are the target for such pranks and poor Aarti was our bakra this time around. We had one of our guys pose as an interviewer and asked Aarti her views on the whole cheer-leader controversy that had sprung up during the IPL. She said that it was unnecessarily being hyped and saw no harm in cheerleaders being around. Then we had another guy talking in Marathi acting as a president of a political party asking her how she could be so careless towards such a serious issue. He started threatening her to take back her comments. Poor Aarti didn't know what hit her and got tensed and started crying. She was almost about to call the cops for protection when we broke out the news that it was a prank. She was mighty pissed with all of us but I must say that she was by-far the easiest one to fall for our tricks and Anna, myself and the rest of the gang had a blast pulling a prank on her
Three- Love, Lies, Betrayal is directed by Vishal Pandya who is making his debut. How has he done for his debut flick?
Vishal is a young boy but has been working as an assistant with Vikram Bhatt for a long time now. He is one of Vikram's most entrusted guys. When Vikram first told me that Vishal would be directing Three- Love, Lies, Betrayal, I was a bit nervous. I even asked Vikram to be on the sets. But after the first day's shoot, I realized that this young boy is a bundle of talent. He executed the intense scene so brilliantly that I told Vikram now it doesn't matter if you are present or not present on the sets. I am very happy with his work and the fact that he made me explore the other side of me through this role.
You are paired opposite Nausheen Ali Sardar who is a big star on the small screen but is making her big screen debut. How was it working with her?
When I was told that Nausheen would be starring in this film, I had a few thoughts in my mind. I wondered where she was all this while after Kkusum and would she be all right for this role? But when I spoke to my director, he told me that she was busy doing theatre for three years and had been receiving a lot of appreciation for her performances in plays. I then started gaining a lot of respect for her. In this film, she is the only female lead, so but obviously it's a very important role for her. She has given a fabulous performance and indeed suits the part very well.
The thought of allowing a stranger into your house is quite an eerie feeling. Would you ever do such a thing in real life?
Never...never....never (laughs) that's the mistake these guys (Akshay and Nausheen) make in the film but lots of people do it in our country. We as a nation believe in the philosophy of Athithidevo Bhava and say that Mehman Bhagwan Hota Hai...I too believe in these things but let me tell you that I am far from being Bhagwan in this film.
6 releases last week and Three the coming week, do you think audience has the time and money to watch so many films?
Definitely they don't have the time and money to watch all the films...Recession is also going on but today's audience is smart. They are going to take a pick and watch the one that interests them most. After the multiplex strike, there has been a backlog of films ready for release so there is bound to be competition every single week. In fact bigger films are all set to release every week from now onwards. One can't be worried about these things. I am not worried. I just feel that good films work. It's very important for a lot of films to do well since that's the only way the industry can benefit. So I wish well for all the films and not just my film.
Finally, what's next on your agenda after Daddy Cool and Three-Love, Lies, Betrayal?
I have completed Ravi Chopra's Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai with Govinda; I am also wrapping up UTV's Season's Greetings this month which is yet another multi-starrer comedy. I am starting Double Dhamaal (the much awaited sequel to Dhamaal) in exactly 25 days with the complete same cast. I am also doing one more film with Vikram Bhatt which should start sometime in November. It's a mystery horror and Vishal Pandya would be directing this film too.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 1 Sep 2009 | 4:05 am Hrithik Roshan on the cover of GQ magazine
After having won a million hearts (and it's not an exaggeration), the supremely talented Hrithik Roshan is back in the front and how! If his cover snap on the latest edition of the GQ magazine is anything to go by, then, Bollywood is all set to herald the re-birth of a Superstar!
One man who has all the luck in the world is Martin Prihoda, the very name who has to his credit of taming the superstar Hrithik, in his lenses. If you are one of the faint hearted, then, may we request you to kindly hold onto your heart beats and tie yourself tight as the interview in this magazine will anyways blow you out of the world! In what could be called as one of the most heartfelt interviews, Hrithik has really bared out his soul to the guys at GQ.
Hrithik, the man, in his own words, speaks about all the adulation by saying that "You get so confused between the person that you are and the persona that is projected on to that big, huge screen. I've been on stage where I have 40,000 people shouting my name." While on Bollywood, he opines that "I've reached a stage where I have enough courage... to do films I believe in, whether they're considered commercial or non-commercial. It really doesn't matter so much." And for all those who were dying to know the 'Real' Hrithik and didn't know whom to ask, the superstar has done the needful by saying that "I am my own product. And I have to take care of myself. I have to display myself in the best possible way. My light, my expressions, my clothes, everything has to go right. That's going to get me my name, my fame, my bread-and-butter, my money for me and my family."
Needless to say, this issue of GQ is a must-must buy for one and all. Do not miss it for anything in the world.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 1 Sep 2009 | 3:32 am Ranbir shoots Rocket Singh music video despite Grandmother's demise
Ranbir Kapoor was in no mood to dance this week after his grandmother's death. The young actor was very close to his mom's mom who lived in Ranbir house, and in fact in a room right opposite his and was constantly in and out of her favourite grandson's space.
The death in the family hit Ranbir hard. But the very next day he was dancing to Ahmed Khan's choreography at Yashraj Films for a special last-minute song in the song less Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year.
This week for three days from Tuesday to Thursday Yashraj Studios was abuzz with excitement as Ranbir Kapoor shook a leg or two to Ahmed Khan's tune.
The song has apparently been added on to Shimit Amin's Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year much to the choreographer's surprise.
The film was meant to be song less. So what brought on this sudden spurt of music into this gritty real and savagely satirical film about a young Sardarji going through a bad-hair day?
Says Ahmed, "Even I was surprised when Aditya Chopra approached me for a song in Rocket Singh. Then I heard the track by Salim-Suleiman and I was blown. It's a sure-shot hit," says the young choreographer riding high on the waves of the Dan ta nan track from Kaminey.
Ahmed says he has forged another durable star-choreographer bond with Ranbir after Shahid. "Rocket Singh is my third film with Ranbir after Bachna Ae Haseeno and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. We've an almost instinctive understanding of what Ranbir's body language is and how it can be used."
This would the second item number with a Sikh hero after Singh Is Kinng. But Ahmed is sure it is different. "This is a young cute Sardarji having a blast on the dance floor. It's unlike anything anyone has ever seen. We had to cancel take on Tuesday because Ranbir's Naani passed away. But we managed in two days."
The song was apparently Aditya Chopra's and not director Shimit Amin's idea.
Says Ahmed, "I've a 5-film deal with Yashraj, so I am at their beck and call. And if it's song for Ranbir then it's even more fun."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 1 Sep 2009 | 3:31 am Pakistani actress Meera receives death threat; Mahesh Bhatt extends helps
If Pakistani actress Meera is to be believed, she is under deep stress and facing trouble. Again!
Over the weekend gone by, she was in for a rude shock when someone, who claimed to be her husband, tried to force his way into her house. The incident happened in Lahore, Pakistan, where Meera is currently stationed. Though the man wasn't eventually successful in his attempt, a terrified Meera immediately called up her mentor in Bollywood, Mahesh Bhatt, and cried for help.
Confirms Mahesh Bhatt, "Yes, Meera did call from Lahore. Some guy claiming to be her husband tried to break into her home and kill her! She needs help." Incidentally it was Mahesh Bhatt, who along with Mukesh Bhatt, had launched her as an actor in Bollywood with Nazar (2005) which was directed by Soni Razdan. Meera was paired opposite Ashmit Patel in the film that had failed at the box office.
This is not the first time though that Meera has got into trouble and she has reached out to Mahesh Bhatt for help. Last year, she had landed up at Mahesh Bhatt's house at around 2 AM in the morning after being troubled by a guy. At that time she was living in Mumbai and she became so terrified after the incident that she didn't have anyone else to look forward to help than her mentor himself.
It's a different matter though that Mahesh Bhatt had refused to entertain her request at that time of the night and asked Sevy Ali (producer of Nazar) to help her out.
Though at that time both the parties had found the behaviour of each other unacceptable (Meera was miffed that Bhatt didn't allow her in while the latter felt that she shouldn't have knocked at his doors in the paranoiac state that she was in), situation is a little different today.
While for Meera, it was again Mahesh Bhatt whom she showed her trusted, even Mahesh Bhatt is not shying away from helping her out.
Coming back to Meera's claim, there is also another version floating around as per netizens. It has also been stated that the man is actually Meera's husband and has the relevant papers and photographs to back his statement. Apparently he did try to reach Meera but her guards prevented him from entering her house.
Though one hopes that things do not take an uglier turn, as per Mahesh Bhatt, there is help already reaching out to Meera from official channels.
"Salman Taseer, the Governor of Punjab, was very prompt in taking action. Meera is still crying for help though", says Mahesh Bhatt.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 1 Sep 2009 | 3:27 am 'Do Knot Disturb' - not an impressive comeback for Nadeem-ShravanThe hit composer duo of the 1990s, Nadeem-Shravan, who created chartbusters for movies like "Aashiqui", "Saajan", "Deewana", "Raja Hindustani", "Pardes" and "Dhadkan", return after four years with the music of "Do Knot Disturb".Source: Entertainment News | 1 Sep 2009 | 3:12 am
