Shashi Kapoor to receive Lifetime Achievement award at Mumbai Film Festival

Shashi Kapoor The 11th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF) organized by Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) is back and scheduled to take place from October 29 to November 5, 2009 in Mumbai. A Reliance Big Entertainment initiative, MFF has the distinction of being the only international film festival in India to be organized by an independent body of practicing film professionals. This year MMF will honour two extremely talented filmmakers from India and abroad. Indian actor-director Shashi Kapoor will receive the Indian lifetime achievement award at the inaugural function of the Festival on October 29, 2009. A selection of his films will be screened on this occasion. Considered as one of the world's greatest living directors, Greek film-maker Angelopoulos will be presented the international lifetime achievement award in the closing ceremony of the Festival on November 5, 2009. A retrospective of his films will be organized to salute the maestro. Divided into five sections viz. International Competition for the First Feature Films of Directors, World Cinema, Indian Showcase, Dimensions Mumbai and Retrospectives, the festival offers something to every film buff. A five member international jury will include celebrated Hollywood scriptwriter, director and Martin Scorsese's long term collaborator Paul Schrader (script writer for the cult film Taxi Driver & co-writer of Raging Bull amongst others) and eminent Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi (who has been awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for his work) "The 11th MFF will showcase the best in contemporary Indian cinema even while it takes a look back at cinema down the ages," notes renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal, the chair-person of MAMI. "We also want to encourage young film talent and have a forum for that. Further, our audience will be treated to the works of Shashi Kapoor and Angelopoulos, two filmmakers to be honoured with life-time achievement awards. Both have traversed a long path and made a distinctive niche for themselves in world cinema." The 11th MFF will also organize an exhibition to commemorate and celebrate 60 years of Dev Anand's Navketan Films. A retrospective from Navketan will be screened to mark the occasion. MFF carries some of the biggest cash awards in the world for its International Competition of First Feature Films of Directors category. These debut features will compete for the cash award of about USD 100,000 (Rs, 50, 00,000) and Golden Gateway India trophy for the best film and the Silver Gateway India and cash prize of about USD 50,000 (25, 00, 000) for the Jury Grand Prize. The best talent from these films will be given Silver Gateway India. This year MAMI is introducing a USD 20,000 Audience Choice Award (about Rs. 10, 00, 000). Films from all sections except retrospective and tributes will compete for this award. Also on the anvil is 'Mumbai Young Critics', a brand new initiative from MAMI to encourage young film enthusiasts. 32 college students from various Mumbai colleges will be selected to form a first of its kind jury. These young jury members will vote for the film which will receive the Mumbai Young Critics Award and the Silver Gateway of India. Finding a place at MFF is 'Dimensions Mumbai', an immensely popular short film competition organized by MAMI. The competition invites short films of up to five minutes duration from young film-makers on the theme of 'Mumbai, The Metropolis'. The films on any aspect of life in the metropolis made in any format will vie for cash awards worth Rs. 1.5 Lakh. Fun Republic- the 4 screens multiplex at Andheri will be the central venue of the 11th MFF. Festival films will also be screened at Metro BIG Cinema and other theatres.

Mika is miffed with Deepak Tijori for deleting his song from Fox

Mika Singh Mika Singh is miffed with director Deepak Tijori. The singer's song was deleted off from the movie Fox without informing him or even having a word with him. Mika had shot for a song called 'Sexy Kudiye' for the movie. The song was solely shot with Mika, which was a part of the movie. A source reveals, "During the editing stage, the song was taken out, without updating Mika for the same. He learnt of the same after he didn't see his song airing with the promos. It is quite a peppy number which was decided to be used as one of the song promos." It is learnt that Mika's song was replaced with another song called 'Jashn Jashn' sung by singer Aakriti Kakkar Mika says, "Everyone knows that to which ever movie I have given my songs, they have turned out to be super hits. Right from Jab We Met, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Singh Is Kinng. People who have removed my song will be unlucky. It is bad luck for them that they don't have my song in the movie." He continues, "I was aware that the song is removed but you reminded me now. They didn't ask me before removing it. As my duty I sent them the song, now it was up to them if they wanted to use it or not. We didn't have an agreement that I should be upset. The producer called me and told me that they are removing the song." "The release is less than one week away and there is no buzz about the movie. By deleting my song, they have added bad luck to the movie. I am not affected; on the other hand I have gained confidence," adds Mika. Director Deepak Tijori says, "Yes, we have removed Mika's song. Once we all sat down to watch the movie, we realized the song wasn't fitting in. It was breaking the story plot of the film. The production house and I jointly decided to delete the song." Did you inform Mika about it? He says, "This is handled by the production department. They will have to inform him. He is a dear friend of ours." Fox is produced by Zee Motion Pictures and is due to release on September 4. The movie stars Sunny Deol, Arjun Rampal, Udita Goswami and Sagarika Ghatge.

Akshay shoots for his long pending film titled Hello India in London

Akshay Kumar A 12-year old film finally got completed this week, thanks to its leading man Akshay Kumar's determination to not have a single film of his in the cans. This week after completing a schedule of Sajid Khan's Housefull, Akshay Kumar sent Deepika Padukone packing and called producer-director Shabnam Kapoor to London to complete the long-pending Purab Ki Laila Paschim Ka Chaila, now called Hello India. Shabnam Kapoor flew to London and shot with Akshay Kumar for almost a week before he flew out to Italy on Thursday for the next schedule of Housefull. With the completion of Purab Ki Laila… which also stars Namrata Shirodkar and Suniel Shetty, Akshay prides himself on being the only leading man in Bollywood who has no films in the cans. He now has the enviable record of being the only Bollywood superstar with no incomplete films to his discredit.

"Dad is getting his passport for Raj's birthday, not my wedding" - Shilpa Shetty

Reports that Shilpa's dad has been applying to retrieve his passport from Surat (where the document is kept because of a pending court case) so he can be in London for his daughter's wedding has Shilpa in splits. "The passport is certainly not meant for my wedding, please! It's not happening in October, November, December or any of the dates that have been fixed for my wedding in the media. Raj and I will announce the date from rooftops and invite the entire press corps to be part of the baraati when it happens. In the meanwhile, please leave my father alone." Papa Shetty's passport needed retrieval not for Shilpa's wedding but for another family gathering altogether. "It's Raj Kundra's birthday on September 9. Our entire collective family will be bringing in the occasion at the Maldives. That's what my dad needed his passport for." On a more sober note, Shilpa says, "We all respect the judiciary. But it's very humiliating for any daughter to have her father rushing to another town for his passport. It's even more humiliating to have erroneous media reports being put out about one's father .He had applied for his passport a few months ago." As for the wedding, "There's no reason on earth why Raj I wouldn't want to get married at the earliest. At the moment we've our hands full with many new exciting ventures. We need get the space in our lives to plan and enjoy this wonderful event. Haath peele karne ke liye haath khali to hone chahiye."

"I will ask my 'Cool Daddy' to 'Toss' the coin and decide" - Aarti Chhabria

Starting from Awara Paagal Deewana to Shootout At Lokhandwala, Aarti Chhabria has been enjoying an eventful journey in Bollywood. She may not have hit the top bracket over the years gone by but Aarti is happy that she has survived well to create at least a small place for herself in the industry. As she gets ready for a double bill this Friday with Daddy Cool and Toss hitting the screens, she speaks to Joginder Tuteja about the journey so far and how she intends to do better work in time to come. This Friday sees the release of two your films - Daddy Cool and Toss. Proves the saying that 'Bhagwaan jab deta hai to chappar phaad ke deta hai'? [Laughs] Very true, it is actually a 'chappar phaad' moment. Of course I am excited and nervous but in a way tremendously happy too. This shows that I am pretty much alive and kicking in the industry. Last three weeks especially have been such a roller coaster ride while doing the promotion of both films. It has actually been a 24X7 job and a very tiring and hectic schedule. But do I mind that? Naah, not at all. I wish I have more such weeks in future as well. Last three weeks especially have been such a roller coaster ride while doing the promotion of both my films- Toss and Daddy Cool. You must be happy though that from genre perspective, Toss [thriller] and Daddy Cool [comedy] are different. Of course yes. Toss has me playing the role of Sasha who is someone you would either love or hate. She is someone who hails from Goa and hence being sexy comes natural to her. She doesn't try to be sexy though but it's the boldness in her attitude that brings that element out. She is certainly not the girl next door either. There is nothing regular about her and her actions are extreme. You seem to be really excited talking about this film. Do you think I am being hyper? Arrey nahi, by nature I have always been very expressive. In fact as a child I was called as a 'chanchal bachcha' because of this nature of mine [laughs]. By nature I have always been very expressive. In fact as a child I was called as a 'chanchal bachcha' because of this nature of mine And how much of a 'chanchal bachcha' do we see in Daddy Cool which happens to be a fun and entertaining comic outing? Now that one is a really amusing outing that I found myself in. More than being 'chanchal', I play this really nagging wife of Suneil Shetty. As Nancy, I can't stand my mother in law [Suhasini Mulay]. I may look at her and smile but my inner voice would always be like 'you bi#$h'! Aarti, you have been around for some time now and have been a part of a few successful films, starting from Awara Paagal Deewana to Shootout At Lokhandwala. Why have you not been aggressive in pushing yourself hard in this industry? Well, actually it is high time that I start doing that. I need to give that 'black coffee' shot to this industry and make them wake up to the work that I have been doing. In fact I am doing so much good work down South as well. The best part of Daddy Cool and Toss coming together has been that I have managed to be much more visible amongst the industry folks and media today. There have been great feelers that I have received during the last 3-4 weeks gone by. I need to give that 'black coffee' shot to this industry and make them wake up to the work that I have been doing. So what are your future plans from here? Well, it has been a long time on the runway and it's time to take off now [smiles]. In fact I haven't signed any new movie for the last 1.5 years and am actually waiting for the best work to come to me. It was crucial for me to be saying no to things that didn't excite me. There is no point doing something that I wasn't convinced about and I am sure that this wait won't go waste. Do you feel more publicity around you would help? See, all of that stays at the peripheral but what matters eventually is your work in the end. I may not be an Ash in terms of popularity but in my own ways, I have managed to make a place for myself in this really HUGE industry. I feel like a part of it at least, even though it could be relatively smaller. I know that there are people out there who trust my capabilities and are sure that I will prove myself eventually. Ok, so on a parting note, which of your two movies would you watch First Day First Show in theaters? [Laughs] Did you really think that I hadn't thought about it myself? Well, I will ask my 'Cool Daddy' to 'Toss' the coin and decide it for me!

"Today Jackie Shroff is filling the gap that Dilip saab left behind" - Arbaaz Khan

Arbaaz Khan It was a good 2008 for Arbaaz Khan as he was seen in diverse roles in films like Fashion, Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Naa and Woodstock Villa and appreciated for his performances. Though Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye, Jai Veeru and The Stoneman Murders didn't make any ripples this year, Arbaaz Khan is positive that Kisaan would certainly be noticed and appreciated for its theme, treatment and performances. Talking to Joginder Tuteja, he reemphasizes the fact that Kisaan remains entertaining (with box office in sight) even as the film takes audiences to a family in an Indian village. In most of your films, you have played an urban guy. Was it challenging for you to actually adapt the psyche of someone who has a village as his origin? Actually, my character in the film is urban since he has lived in the city for some part of his life for education purpose. Yes, but from origin perspective, he still has a village backdrop so those roots aren't missed. He was born and brought up in a village up to a certain age so as an actor I actually enjoyed the best of both worlds. It wasn't really difficult understanding what this character was all about. This one appears to be a mix of a social film with a family drama at the centre of it. Is it the right way to describe it? Bang on! Yes, Kisaan is a family drama with a backdrop of a 'kisaan' household. See, at the end of the day, a story has to be placed in some geography. Even if your story revolves around a father (Jackie Shroff) and his two sons (Sohail and myself), you need to have a backdrop. Now it could be a village or a city and we decided to take our film to the former. Kisaan is a family drama with a backdrop of a 'kisaan' household. Does the film explore issues like farmer suicide that are prevalent in villages across the country? Dekho, hai to mainly yeh ek kisaan ke ghar ki kahani! But beyond that, we are not talking about facts and statistics and stuff like that. Yes, we do touch upon the life of this farmer family which inadvertently brings in the kind of problems that are faced by it; whether personal or environmental. In any case, we are not looking at making any huge statements here. After all there are problems that families face in cities as well. Pressures could be different there but then they are there for sure. Arbaaz Khan Well, farmer suicide is not prevalent in cities... Agreed and so do things like draughts and famines which do not impact them directly; though indirectly they do for sure. There are topics that generally effect people in villages, including return of bank loans, and we have touched upon them though in a subtle way without pegging the entire narrative of the film on them. Ultimately, at its core, the film remains to be a drama about a father and two sons. Even though there are issues that have been raised, Kisaan stays on to be a mainstream film. It has been taken care that entertainment quotient isn't compromised throughout the film's narrative. You have mentioned a couple of time about Kisaan telling the story of a family with a father figure at the top. In the film you have Jackie Shroff as your father. It must have been some experience working with a veteran like him, right? Absolutely. He is a stalwart in his own right, a great actor and a fantastic human being. He has done such fabulous work in Kisaan and people will see him in a new light as he plays the role of a man who is much older than his actual age. He has played his part with such conviction; hats off. Jackie Shroff has come up with such a powerful act and I am sure you would be so happy to see him in an author backed role in Kisaan You seem to be in awe of him... He has come up with such a powerful act and I am sure you would be so happy to see him in an author backed role in Kisaan. I can confidently say that today he is filling the gap that Dilip saab left behind during the days of Vidhaata and Shakti. There was a time period when actors were not seen in such roles but Jackie Shroff is inching towards playing such powerful and intense characters. I am sure Kisaan is just a start. When the entire world is making rom-coms or comedies or action flicks, what made you go for a theme like this? Arrey bhaiyya yeh kyo bhool jaate ho that a huge population in our country is made of kisaan! When as a country we are known for our agricultural base, why is it such a scandalous thought to be making a film with farming as the backdrop? Why do we sound so shocked with a title like Kisaan? Why should the film be looking risky for a few out there? Wasn't it a worrying thought about how audiences would be receiving the film? As long as we can make a good story about the most popular and important people in our country, we are not worried. See, due to this entire multiplex culture, people start questioning that 'arrey yeh picture ka title kaisa hai', 'yeh picture kis segment of audience ke liye bani hai' etc. etc. When we can expect a title like Company and appreciate it by stating - 'Kya experiment hai yaar?', why not respect something which is a part of us?

"Kaminey was a big risk" - Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor Kaminey is a good success, both critically as well as commercially, and now all of a sudden Shahid Kapoor finds himself in the super big league. While the Khans (Shah Rukh, Aamir, Salman) have been dominating from the top along with Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan, the success of Kaminey means that both Shahid Kapoor as well as Saif Ali Khan (who again delivered a huge money spinner in Love Aaj Kal) are already making actors in the Top-5 uncomfortable. As this Vishal Bhardwaj film continues to fetch audiences and reactions for itself in it's second week, Joginder Tuteja catches up with Shahid Kapoor who feels that the biggest success point for Kaminey is the fact that massy as well as niche audiences have given a Thumbs Up to a subject and a genre that has been hitherto unexplored. For a film like Kaminey, even you would have expected mixed and extreme reviews, right? So weren't you surprised when you saw universally superb reviews coming the film's way? Personally speaking, over and above the fact that the reviews have been very positive, what worked for me most was that Kaminey was a very well made film. Also, it was a difficult role that I had done which further makes the success sweeter. Now that people have liked the movie and appreciated me tremendously, something which is being reflected at the box office as well, the success thing has hit me hard. The film was a big risk in all ways. Shahid Kapoor Why do you say so? It was a big risk to be going ahead with such a wide release for a film. Normally, a film belonging to such subject and genre would arrive at around 500-600 prints. However, we went all out with Kaminey and released it on 1300-1400 screens. My last film, Kismat Konnection, had come on 950 odd screens and that was my most wide spread release. So yes, in all ways it has been a great outing with Kaminey. A project like this was always meant to be risky. So what do you think still worked in the film's favour that it got such wide spread appreciation. The very fact that it was out of the box. In fact from the success of Kaminey, we can learn something. See, just a couple of years back we had Omkara. Till today we talk about it and it saw such huge critical acclaim coming its way. Unfortunately, it wasn't a big success commercially. Now two years down the line, we saw Kaminey which is something that's again different and out of the box. So what has really changes is the audiences' perspective in the time period gone by. Today they have opened up and are far more forthcoming and receptive to such cinema. Today audiences have opened up and are far more forthcoming and receptive to such cinema Can you please elaborate? See, they would rather see something different like this than run of the mill stuff. This is a learning for me too and a pleasant experience for sure. We can now see that even 'aam junta' is ready for such stuff and not just niche audience. It's no more just an intelligent and intellectual audience that is interested in such treatment; we are steadily finding universal acceptance. Frankly, while we were making the movie, we realized that it was a difficult movie to be pushed and get the audiences. Thankfully, things fell in place and we succeeded. Shahid Kapoor Coming to your performance in Kaminey, one thing is for sure that you would be nominated for Kaminey when the best of the best are announced for year 2009. Now the question is whether it would be for the best actor in the main lead or the best actor in a negative lead? Personally whom would you want the award to go - Guddu or Charlie? [Laughs] Now I am all for this compliment! On a serious note though, I guess if at all I am nominated, both the actors would fall under just plain and simple 'Best Actor' category. After all it was a double role that I played and it should be looked in the perspective of both the actors being put together; you can't have them split. The film would be incomplete without Guddu or Charlie. [Smiles] In fact I remember that when Priyanka (Chopra) was being asked the same question, she said that she wanted the best of both worlds by having someone who had the heart of Guddu and looks of Charlie. Jokes apart, no point speculating about awards because honestly I don't like thinking about tomorrow. I guess if at all I am nominated, both the actors would fall under just plain and simple 'Best Actor' category You are being diplomatic... No, I am not. See, there are so many huge stars and established actors today. The very fact that people consider this performance of mine to be carrying good potential to win an award is rewarding enough. Barely has the euphoria for Kaminey settled down that you are all over again with Dil Bole Hadippa. And then there is Chance Pe Dance round the corner too. Isn't it too much happening all on one go? [Smiles] Ask me! And you forgot the Parmeet Sethi film with Anushka (Sharma) for which I am currently shooting for. Believe me, these are some insanely busy times. At the moment, I can't get over with all the reactions that are still coming in for Kaminey. Within a month from now, Dil Bole Hadippa will release (18th September) and I am gearing up for that. A day after the film's release, I leave for USA. Then soon after I would be back to promote Ken's Chance Pe Dance. Honestly speaking, it's all so crazy. I don't really have time to breath though honestly, it's a happy problem to be a part of!
