This one comes straight from Ripley's believe-it-or-nuts books of blatant copyright infringement.
Co-producers, business partners and fast friends Akshay Kumar and Vipul Shah discovered to their amused horror that a new Bengali blockbuster Poran Jay Joliya Re (PJJR) has blatantly lifted the plot, scenes, even frames and costumes from Namastey London, without a by-your-leave from the producers.
Says Vipul, "I had no clue about this Bengali film until I read an interview with the film's producers blatantly admitting to the fact that there were similarities between their Bengali film and our Namastey London. I took into confidence a large number of friends and advisers in Kolkata who saw the film repeatedly and made a report on the similarities. The copied scenes ran into 5-6 pages in the report!"
Now Vipul flies to Kolkata on Sunday to initiate legal action. "Our legal advisers in Kolkata are confident that we've ample evidence of the Bengali film being copied from Namastey London. Even the Bengali hero (Dev) makes his entry wearing a kurta and kadha. You tell me why a film set in Bengal has its hero in a Punjabi get-up like Namastey London."
The film is strewn with what Vipul sees as blatant examples of plagiarism, enough to initiate legal action against the Bengali producers Sri Venkatesh Films early this week.
Says Vipul, "We don't want monetary compensation. The Bengali film is a big blockbuster. It has made huge amounts of money. A compensation of 5-10 lakhs means nothing to them. Other filmmakers would be encouraged to plagiarize knowing all they've to do is shell out a small compensation. We want to make an example of this case, so that regional filmmakers would think twice before lifting Hindi films. The penalty should be severe."
Ironically, Namastey London on release was said to be inspired by Manoj Kumar's Purab Aur Pachim. "That was not correct. There were no similarities between the two films except for the fact that in both cases, the innocent hero goes to England and confronts the cultural diasporas. Namastey London was inspired by a friend of Akshay's who underwent a similar experience."
More recently, Vipul Shah's new under-production film Action Replay was said to be inspired by The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Says Vipul, "That was a very irresponsible piece of reporting. It prompted Warner Brothers to issue a statement. But the fact is Action Replay is about going back in time whereas Benjamin Button is about age reversal. Let them find one similarity between my film and Benjamin Button and we're ready to face the consequences. I disapprove of plagiarism in any form or language. And by taking on the people who've copied my Namastey London in Bengali, I'm actually making sure none of us in Bollywood ever falls for the temptation of taking the easy way out to success by simply borrowing a successful film."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 5 Aug 2009 | 5:03 am Now Hugh Jackman to star in a musical

Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 5 Aug 2009 | 4:50 am 'Let Suparn run the show' - Sanjay Gupta advises curious Aftab
During the shooting of Acid Factory, one of the actors in the action multi starrer, Aftab Shivdasani, challenged director Suparn Verma's entire shot taking approach. He got into a lengthy debate post which producer Sanjay Gupta announced it loud and clear that Suparn was the man in charge and his authority won't be questioned thereafter.
Says a prominent crew member who wished to be unnamed, "This was during the South Africa shoot of Acid Factory. A pivotal scene featuring both Aftab Shivdasani and Fardeen Khan was being shot. It was a high tension scene that involved two cameras - a steadycam and hand held."
"While Suparn was directing the scene, Aftab was very curious to know how he would eventually cut it. He kept challenging Suparn, so much so that the debate went on for a good half an hour."
Though Suparn wasn't quite pleased with the way the entire conversation was going, he kept his cool and had a word with Aftab only after pack up.
"I can understand where he was coming from. It was indeed a very unorthodox way of shot taking and something very different from the routine way of doing things. It was okay for Aftab to have some questions about it", says Suparn who has earlier directed Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena [Fardeen Khan, Koena Mitra, Firoz Khan], again a thriller.
He did make his stand clear though. "When the day's shoot ended, I met him and suggested that whenever he had any doubts in future, he could have a discussion with me after pack up but not on the sets. It isn't fair for anyone to keep the shoot on hold for even one minute."
Suparn informs that he had worked hard on designing the entire film in his mind and he had every single frame cut out for him even before the film's shoot began.
"This is why I was so confident about the film", he adds, "I told Aftab that he didn't have to worry since the entire factory set was custom made while keeping under consideration the shot division. I had spent 3 months with Nitish Roy, the production designer, to get it all right. I requested Aftab to just concentrate on acting and he too was cool once he understood the way I was going to shoot the film. We shook hands, hugged each other and it was back to business the next day."
However, the story didn't end here. There was more to come once the production crew informed Sanjay Gupta, who was at that time stationed in Mumbai for some work, about the entire hold up in film's shoot due to the lengthy debate.
Informs the source, "Once he heard what had transpired on the sets, Sanjay Gupta immediately wanted the message to reach out to the entire cast and crew of the film. He called up Aftab and categorically told him that he had complete confidence in Suparn's abilities."
"Yes, Sanjay did call up Aftab and then later me", confirms Suparn, "That's one call that I cherish most since Sanjay reinforced his trust in me. He told me that he was standing behind me like a rock and wanted me to make the film in the way I wanted it. In fact when he saw the final cut of Acid Factory, his face said it all. He felt really proud of the film. I am happy that I was able to justify the confidence he had shown in me".
All is well that ends well. Ultimately the very scene for which Aftab had his doubts is now the actor's favorite scene.
Laughs Suparn, "We happily chatted about the film once we saw the final cut together. Aftab was candid enough to admit that it turned out to be his favorite scenes from the film. I was truly humbled."
Starring Fardeen Khan, Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Dino Morea, Aftab Shivdasani and Danny Denzongpa along with Dia Mirza, Acid Factory is a Suparn Verma film of a Sanjay Gupta production and is all set to hit the screens on 2nd October.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 5 Aug 2009 | 4:32 am T-Series to launch music on pen drives and micro-chips
After having made its impeccable mark in the world of music through audio cassettes and CDs, the music major T-Series is now all set to capture the world of technology by launching music in the form of pen drives and micro- chips, which will have pre-recorded music. It will be a combination of music plus storage space.
T-Series, which initiated the research and development wing to work on this almost a year ago, will definitely be the first music company to make music available on pen drives and micro chips. The said format will be launched with the Akshay-Lara starrer Blue, whose music is composed by A.R.Rahman.
Talking about this breakthrough development, Bhushan Kumar, the head honcho of T-Series, said, "We saw this coming since sometime now as music market is getting younger and younger. The trend in music is strongly favoring digital platforms. We had initiated research and development for this around a year and half back and now we are ready to take this step which is a very big one in music industry. We will be aggressively looking at mobile memory chips through which people can carry music on their phones and we will be looking at pen drives which people can carry with them and use in laptop as well as car audio systems. We are looking to launch this with Blue which is AR Rahman's only score this year. We see it as a revolutionary step which may change music consumption to a great degree."

The bad news on Rahul Bose's front is that his second directorial venture Moth Smoke (his first directorial film Everybody Says I'm Fine came 5 years ago) based on Moshin Hamid's celebrated novel is delayed because the financiers have pulled out.
"That's true. The originals funders have backed out. But there's no dearth of alternative funders. I've the rights for four years, of which only one year has elapsed. So there's time."
Though after he broke his nose for the umpteenth time this February, Rahul has retired from Indian rugby, he will continue to play the game internationally for as long as they'd have him.
"You really can't take a rugby player out of the game. It's hugely addictive. And though cinema is my primary passion I also remain a rugby player at heart," says Rahul Bose who turned 42 on Monday without fanfare.
"I never have what you'd call a normal birthday. Last year, during my birthday the Ahmedabad bomb blasts happened. This year I was with my six adopted kids at the The Foundation."
Rahul has six children from the Andaman's who were orphaned during the Tsunami. "Spending time with them gives me immense satisfaction. On my birthday, I had lunch with my sister and niece and dinner with author Amitav Ghosh and his wife who are dear friends. Sorry, my Bollywood connection continues to be tenuous."
So how does it feel to be 42? "I'm waiting for all my hair to fall off before my first face lift," Rahul deadpans. "And before you ask I still have no love life." Rahul who dated actress Koel Puri in the past has been single in recent years.
Ends Rahul, "I'm very excited about my new film with Aparna Sen The Japanese Wife. Like English August, Pyar Ke Side Effects and Jhankar Beats, I feel The Japanese Wife will be one those films that people will remember me by."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 5 Aug 2009 | 4:10 am Ram Gopal Varma is remaking his own filmsBhoot had it's germ in Raat. Love Aaj Kal has opened to a fantastic response all over and Saif Ali Khan has all the right reasons to celebrate. Not just has his banner gained tremendous credibility, even as an actor, Saif Ali Khan has managed to find a new standing and respectability amongst the audiences. With the weekend numbers in hand and audience verdict being loud and clear, Saif is confident that Love Aaj Kal will attain further heights in weeks to come. Talking to Joginder Tuteja, an excited Saif talks about what the success of Love Aaj Kal means to him, how he shrugged away questions around him turning producer and how the entire business scenario has changed in Bollywood today with box office records being created and broken with every passing week.
So Saif, has the party already begun for you, your family and the cast and crew of Love Aaj Kal?
(Laughs) No, not really. Where is the time to party yet? When a movie comes closer to its release time then the tension starts building up to check how the advance booking is performing. Then you wait for Friday to open well and then you want to check whether collections are seeing further escalation over Saturday and Sunday. Of course you want to keep a tab on it when the film is a hit. If it's a flop you just wish to run away from it all (laughs). So yes, when a film is doing as well as in the case of Love Aaj Kal, then you are glued on to Monday collections to check if they have managed to hold on well. So you know, by the time you have realized that your film is actually a success, you are so exhausted and stressed out that there is no strength left to party.
There were many out there who thought that you were doing a professional hara-kiri by turning producer. Were you ever flustered because of that?
Yes, there were people who questioned that who were these guys who are trying their hands into production? What experience do they carry? Why are they spending so much? After all it has happened to so many people in the past who have lost credibility once they have shifted lines in filmmaking. But then as I said earlier, it is all about making right decisions at the right time. See, I am a history student and have read many stories and known many instances from the past. I have applied the same learning principle in my life as well. I have learnt from other filmmakers, seen their past success and failure. I have made notes of what to take seriously in life. All of that really helped.
I am sure you must have been confident about the story of Love Aaj Kal and expecting a huge response for the film. That's the very reason you flooded the market with a huge number or prints as a result of which every multiplex was playing close to 20 shows a day.
(Laughs) No one can still be always so confident around where the film would be headed for. You can flood the market with prints but eventually you just hope that people come to the party. That's a risk that you run. You promote your movie to the fullest, make it reach out to as many people as possible and still there is always a high chance that people don't come to the party! Ultimately there is just not a question of me being a star good enough to get dozens and dozens of people walking into theaters. It's an overall combination of Imtiaz, me, newer stars, music, posters - everything to gel in well in order to excite audiences.
Even with such huge numbers, aren't you amused with the entire multiplex success v/s single screens talk?
Oh yes, I am amused. I am surprised that people still start talk about single screens business when the fact remains that more than 80% money comes from multiplexes today. Come on, the entire business has become much more exciting today. Gone are the days when we used to talk about occupancy percentage and all. Today even if there are 10 people in a multiplex auditorium for some particular show and there are 30 odd shows running in a day, then no one starts worrying about it. Business has increased ten fold today, what with records being broken with every biggie releasing in theaters.
Just like the Hollywood model...
Why just Hollywood? In fact in our very country if you look at film business in Andhra Pradesh, the business has been all about numbers for so long. A Chiranjeevi movie would be screened at hundreds of theaters simultaneously that would help gain instant moolah. That's the reason why he used to charge a bomb at the time when we were probably being paid in single digits (laughs). Ultimately it's about the print thing. And when we talk about Hollywood, a film like Spiderman would release on 5000 prints but there would still be ready tickets available for Monday. Understandably so because logon ko kaam par bhi toh jaana hai weekdays par! But then comes a weekend and its back to packed houses again. It's all about the numbers game and better we start adapting to it, more comfortable it would be for us to digest the new phenomenon.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 5 Aug 2009 | 3:43 am Rihanna spotted flirting with model-and-doormanWashington (ANI): Umbrella singer Rihanna was reportedly seen flirting with a model-and-doorman at the AXE lounge in New York's seaside resort, the Hamptons. It's not just Kajol, but also the very 'bubbli-cious' Genelia Dâsouza, who celebrates her birthday today. With 'Geenu' as her pet name, there's no looking back for this girl, who took her first steps in Bollywood with Tujhe Meri Kasam, in which she was paired opposite Riteish Deshmukh. With her dedication and hard work doing all the talking, one can rightly say that her success in Bollywood is a much deserved one. For the uninitiated, it's not just Bollywood that sings her praises, but also the South Indian film industry, of which she has become an integral part!
Besides acting, Genelia has to her credit of being a state level athlete and a national level football player. She is someone whose face does full justice to all those millions and zillions of products of which she is the Brand Ambassador! It won't be a surprise that one day while the human race might just forget the existence of sun and the moon, they will just not forget Genelia's heart-touching role of the innocent Aditi in the smash hit film Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Naa and her unforgettable dance steps to the semi-national anthem called 'Pappu Cant Dance Saala'. Genelia will soon be soon in the forthcoming comic caper Life Partner.

The way Aamir Khan fits the tag of a 'Perfectionist' to a 'T', the only word that justifies today's Birthday girl Kajol is 'DYNAMITE'. For starters, Kajol was born in Mumbai in to a Bengali-Marathi family who has got their terra firma in Bollywood.
With the legendary actresses Tanuja as her mother and the late Shobhana Samarth as her grandmother, it was only but natural for Kajol to take to acting much faster than a fish would take to water. Kajol, who made her celluloid debut with Bekhudi, went onto do films (with practically all the top heroes of Bollywood) so much so that she became the 'success formula' for all the film makers!
Hers is possibly the only 'Bio-Data' in the whole of Bollywood that can claim to have nothing less than hits, smash hits and super hits! The testimonials to the same stands in the form of Baazigar, the all-time smash hit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Fanaaâ¦to name a few! It's not just the whole of Bollywood, but the whole Universe is waiting with bated breath for her next magnum opus titled My Name Is Khan that has the impeccable trio of her alongwith SRK and Karan Johar!

By now its common knowledge that Amitabh Bachchan has gone in for a completely new look for his role in R. Balki's Paa. While Big B's look has already generated a lot of curiosity, even beta Abhishek Bachchan has decided to go for a different look for his character in the film.
From the looks of it, Abhishek plays a politician in the film and has modeled his look on the lines of the famous young politicians Sachin Pilot and Milind Deora. Dressed in a crisp white kurta-pyjama (the trademark dress of Indian politicians) and sporting a bespectacled look, Abhishek indeed looks like the quintessential politician.
While some feel that his look bears an uncanny resemblance to the Congress' Rahul Gandhi, AB Jr. dismisses all rumours by saying that he has modeled his look and style on Sachin Pilot while his character is based on Milind Deora.
While the look seems perfect for someone playing a young politician, one will have to wait and watch if AB Jr. manages to get the body language of his character right.

Bhoot had it's germ in Raat. Sarkar got inspired from Godfather. Aag tried to tell a modern day Sholay tale. And now after Jungle, he returns to the 'jungle' with Agyaat. Even before his detractors could utter 'P', Ram Gopal Varma chose to go offensive and announced loud and clear that not just did Agyaat have it's roots in Predator, it has also seen 'liberal inspiration' from half a dozen odd other Bollywood, Hollywood and TV sources.
Is he serious?
"Absolutely", says Ramu with a straight face, "There have been so many films like Friday - The 13th, Anaconda or for that matter Predator that have excelled when it comes to thrill and chill elements. At the end of the day, fear is a universal phenomenon."
As he has been maintaining over the years, Ramu states once again that he doesn't shy away from inspirations or copying his own when a subject interests him.
"I have always paid homage, whatever be the source, when there is something that interests me", he says, "At the end of the day, I have always maintained that I have picked up from films. Whether it was my first film as a director or the Friday release Agyaat, I continue to pick things available around me. Raat became Bhoot, Godfather made me do Sarkar. Black magic gave birth to Phoonk - I keep remaking my own films. The point is to get hold of an idea and see how differently you can narrate it."
Going back the memory lane, he states that when he saw Godfather, it made him question whether a plot and a man like that could exist in Mumbai. Once the answer was yes, he went on to make Sarkar and its sequel. Similarly when it came to Predator and number of others films belonging to the same genre and plotline, he thought of a basic idea to get a bunch of people together and lock them up in a 'jungle' to fight the unknown and unseen.
"If you look at the basic plotline, there would have been 1000 different versions of it already being made in Korea, Japan or other countries", he elaborates, "In case of Agyaat, I have brought together a film unit which gets into a forest to shoot a film. There is this inter-relationship between all of them with their own desires and beliefs. In my own way, I have created a new experience, though it won't have any semblance or similarity to what you may have seen in a movie belonging to the same genre."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 4 Aug 2009 | 7:18 am Aishwarya happy with two mega southern projectsBollywood actress Aishwarya Rai is elated over bagging the main leads in two mega south Indian projects - Mani Ratnam's 'Ravan' and Shankar's 'Endhiran'.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 4 Aug 2009 | 7:01 am 'Love Aaj Kal' rock box officeLove is immortal.Source: Entertainment News | 4 Aug 2009 | 6:42 am 'Aaye tum yaad mujhe': India remembers Kishore on 80th birthdayHis fans and music lovers went back in time as radio stations and TV channels played old melodies of Kishore Kumar, the versatile Indian singer-actor-director-composer who would have been 80 Tuesday.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 4 Aug 2009 | 6:31 am Sonakshi Sinha on the cover of Avant Garde Life

She has studied fashion designing, walked the ramp and is now making a dynamic leap into the world of Bollywood with a dynamic superstar by her side in her debut film, Salman Khan. Sonakshi has studied fashion for three years and during her college days in SNDT she came out as a 'Student of the Year'. By the end of it, she must've got her hands into the garment industry. But look where this chic is heading now. Bollywood Hungama found out by calling the beautiful actress that it was Salman Khan who encouraged Sinha to shed the kilos. "Look at your face. Shed some weight and we'll do a film together. Lose ten kilo's and we do it", said Salman Khan. Guess what the chubby Sonakshi did back then? She didn't lose ten. She lost thirty and put all her weight into her debut film which goes on floor later this year. Dabang meaning fearless is the name of Sonakshi's first film. Here she adores the front cover of the Avant Garde Life. There is lots more inside. When he entered the industry, he knew two things - Punches and Kicking! Acting followed and though it took a few films for the industry (as well as himself) to realize his acting potential, it was Akshay's expertise in martial arts that kept the show running for him. The young man who flew from Chandni Chowk to Bangkok and landed in Mumbai, his initial films like Mr. Bond, Ashaant, Paandav, Kaayda Kanoon and many more ran in theaters solely on his action power!
Now close to 20 years after establishing himself in the industry, Akshay Kumar is all set to be living his dream. He is now sponsoring a Karate Championship for the youngsters so that they can enhance their talent, represent the country and then move on to showcase their skills and abilities at an International level.
The championship has rightly been termed as 'Akshay Kumar 1st Invitational Open National Karate Championship'. The event is expected to see participation from as many as 2000 athletes who would be traveling to Mumbai from across the country. The Championships would be held from 22nd-25th October 2009 at Andheri Sports Complex Mumbai.
Says an official connected to the championship, "Akshay has always been passionate about Karate and is especially considerate about the fact that there is so much talent in the country that needs to be nurtured. He was particularly moved by the plight of some really talented athletes who could reach the highest level if given an opportunity but haven't been able to do so because of lack of funds. With this championship, he wishes to create a platform where young and budding talent from all over India would get together and get into a world class fighting event. This event will also promote Karate and Martial Arts to the remotest corners of the country."
The entire championship is a brain child of Shihan Mehul Vora, a martial arts practitioner for over 27 years and International teacher for 15 years. Incidentally, Akshay's son Aarav gets trained on martial arts at Vora's class.
"I still remember Akshay coming to my Karate Class to watch Aarav train. Whenever he would see a child in need. he would ask me if he/she child would need a sponsorship", says Vora, "When I would tell him that there were so many out there who couldn't afford going to a Karate tournament due to lack of funds, he would always encourage me to think around how this situation could be bettered and he would extend any help that I would ask."
This is when Vora decided to bring up the topic of the championship. "I shared the idea of championship with him and he was immediately on board", Vora gets nostalgic here, "The idea of Akshay Kumar Invitational Open National Karate Championship was born there and then. The students who would be coming for this championship won't have to worry about the cost implications since Akshay would be bearing it all."
While bouts would be held from age groups as young as 6 years in all weight categories for men as well as women, it is also expected that some of the biggest names in Indian Karate would be taking part in this championship. Also, there would be a team of world class referees, judges and coaches along with international grandmasters and observers from Japan, Holland and Italy joining in.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 4 Aug 2009 | 4:09 am Rakhi Sawant says she won't invite mother to weddingSounding excited after her engagement to NRI businessman Elesh Parunjwala, item girl Rakhi Sawant says she wants all her friends, including ex-boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi, to attend her wedding but will not invite her mother.Source: Entertainment News | 4 Aug 2009 | 4:06 am Ramu scares Mumbai city with dummy corpses
Hours after all hell broke lose Ram Gopal Varma is unapologetic about the 'corpses' appended to hoardings of his on-release film Agyaat. "It was meant to create curiosity and it succeeded to that extent," says Ram Gopal Varma. "Agyaat is a horror film and the entire concept of an invisible force killing people hinges on brutal and gruesome deaths. We thought the idea of putting a dummy -corpse on the hoardings would attract eyeballs. And we succeeded."
Now Ramu doesn't mind getting those supposedly offensive dummy-corpses off the hoardings. "But I can't understand why a hard-hitting poster designed specifically for a horror film should be offensive when there are so many other issues that openly mock at our sense of aesthetics."
Interestingly, Ramu's films known to portray women super-sensuously never depict the fair sex in a crude and vulgar light. "You won't even come across the word 'prostitute' in my films. I've an inbuilt censorship and I go by it. Why don't people concentrate on larger issues that plague cinema, like the way women are often shown in our films? I don't think dummy-corpses on hoardings indicate any sense of social irresponsibility on my part. It's not as if I've actually killed anyone."
About the hoardings being a traffic hazard, Ramu scoffs, "We made sure the hoardings were in secluded spots, so no one gets alarmed and distracted. Whether it's the National Anthem or a civic sense, I think I'm a responsible citizen, even if some people accuse me of being an irresponsible filmmaker."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 4 Aug 2009 | 4:02 am
