Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan - Deepika Padukone is pretty much working with the best in the business across diverse age groups. With too much happening in her life in too little time, Deepika is already staring at her fourth release in less than two years since she made her much hyped debut with Om Shanti Om. On the eve of the film's mega release, Deepika talks to Joginder Tuteja about her years gone by in Bollywood, Imtiaz's narrative approach, her songs, styling and the generation leap that the film takes.
From Om Shanti Om to Bachna Ae Haseeno to Chandni Chowk To China and now Love Aaj Kal - There is a visible transformation in you, right Deepika?
Yes, I have indeed opened up a lot during last two years. Of course experience does set in and you tend to become a lot more confident with every film you do. However, one can't forget that one of the major contributors to the entire transformation process is the script of Love Aaj Kal. The character too plays a major role in the way you come across on screen.
Add to that the 'Imtiaz factor'....?
Yes, I was coming to that. The entire combination as I stated earlier can never be complete until and unless the director at the helm of affairs ensures that all of it comes in just the right proportion. He is one director who really brings out your real potential. Credit it to him that I am so 'khulla' today!
So are we looking at an out and out light hearted entertainer in Love Aaj Kal? Or are there some serious dramatic elements embellished in the narrative as well?
Yes, there are some serious elements as well. They do not become too heavy though. There are pensive moments but not 'bhaari-bharkam' enough to make you feel cheated since everyone is expecting Love Aaj Kal to be a fun outing. At the heart of it, Love Aaj Kal is a complete entertainer that will certainly leave you smiling as you exit the theaters.
Love Aaj Kal is a complete entertainer that will certainly leave you smiling
Well, Pritam, Imtiaz and Saif have promised that with 'Aahun Aahun' which comes in the end credits roll!
'Aahun Aahun' is a riot for sure (laughs). But then you must not forget 'Dooriyan' as well which is the only sad number in the film. It has been amazingly picturised and gives an altogether different dimension to the film as it carries the story forward. My personal favorite though is 'Chor Bazaari'.
Talking about 'Chor Bazaari', you seem to have gone through a complete costume makeover for Love Aaj Kal.
Credit it to Anahita Shroff Adajania, my costume designer, and Imtiaz. They came with an entirely fresh take on costumes and styling. They complimented each other and brought in Indian as well as Western sensibilities. Both were very sure about they wanted from me and the costumes I wear. My character also goes through a gradual transition from the first half into the second half so the overall styling did help to bring out that aspect as well. Anahita and I have been working together since my modeling days and she is very well aware about my body structure and what suits me most. That really helped.
Coming to the film's narrative, since the film moves across two generations, was it a little tedious to shoot for the film?
Of what I know about the narration that Imtiaz has adopted for the film, you will never feel the jerk in it even though the story moves back and forth in time. It is pretty seamless actually and all scenes blend in well with the spirit of the movie. In any case Imtiaz is not someone who believes in bringing in unnecessary technical jargon and he has in fact kept it all quite simple. Once you see the film, you will realize it for yourself!
You will never feel the jerk in the film even though the story moves back and forth in time
Since the film also tells the story of Rishi Kapoor, do you also have any scenes with him?
I have just one scene with him!
So all in the family?

Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 1 Aug 2009 | 3:49 am Saif Ali Khan didn't want to have Mumbai premiere for Love Aaj Kal
The recent hectic round of production-related activities and marketing culminating in the painful process of pacifying the Sikh federations about the length of his beard, has taken a toll on Saif Ali Khan. The actor is exhausted and completely not in the mood for any more events related to the film.
The premiere was held in Delhi instead of Mumbai on Thursday night. This would be construed as odd behaviour considering all of Saif and Kareena's friends together at a Mumbai premiere would have constituted almost the entire industry. And they were just a phone call away.
Says Saif, "That's precisely why we decided not to have a premiere in Mumbai. I'd have had to call up everyone personally and ask them to come. It would've seemed like asking for a favour. And I don't want anyone to watch my film out of a sense of generosity."
The last-minute decision to shift the venue of the premiere to Delhi kept most of Saif's colleagues out. But it didn't stop Akshay Kumar from rooting for Love Aaj Kal from London. Akshay prophesied it would be a big hit.
Saif is delighted. "I'm so happy Akshay said that. I wish the industry would show more kindness towards films. When Kareena's Kambakkht Ishq came, there was so much negativity about it. It's scary."
It's this fear of an anticipatory wail that provoked Saif to transfer the premiere venue. "It wasn't really a premiere in Delhi. Just a screening for people close to us," clarifies Saif. "Only the cast and crew and people connected with the film were there. That's the way we wanted to keep it."
But Saif and Kareena's friends in Mumbai are none too pleased. One of his leading ladies with whom he recently did a racy film says, "What's the point of a premiere in Delhi when the whole industry is in Mumbai? I'd have definitely gone, for Saif and Imtiaz Ali's sake. I want to see what they've done together."
But Saif isn't really bothered. It has been a hectic time for him. "Earlier producers like Ramesh Taurani made me do a lot of publicity for their films. Now I totally followed that model for my own production. And I'm exhausted. When I was younger, I found publicity boring. Now I know better."
The experience of producing a film has helped Saif understand the value of economizing. "I used to waste a lot of money and I'm not proud of it. It's not about cutting corners. It's an art to respect money. I've seen my wealthy friends buying the right air tickets, booking the right room at the best possible prices. We did go a tiny bit over-budget in my first production. Next time it won't happen."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 1 Aug 2009 | 3:40 am Review: Love Aaj KalEventually, a script that starts off supremely crisp, loosens out into climaxes. London is currently host to two major film units from Bollywood. Both seem to be facing their own quota of problems.
While Abbas Tyrewala's 1: 800 Love has been encountering a number of visa-related and location problems, Sajid Khan's Housefull suffered a setback when its leading lady Deepika Padukone fell ill.
Even before she, and the unit, could recover from this setback, Deepika left London to join Saif Ali Khan and Imtiaz Ali for an event related to her new release Love Aaj Kal in Delhi.
Akshay of course is playing it cool in London and rooting for Love Aaj Kal since it features his friend Saif in a Sikh's role. Akshay has been there last year in
Singh Is Kinng.
Says Akshay, ''My son Aarav goes back to Mumbai tomorrow. His school starts on Monday. I've a holiday today (Friday) so I can spend time with him and my wife.''
Twinkle returns to join Akshay in London after a fortnight. She now tries to spend as much time with Akshay as possible wherever he's shooting.
With Deepika in Delhi, Akshay and Twinkle have been spending all their time together in London. Says Akshay, ''Yesterday we saw Love Aaj Kal here (in London) and loved it. The way Saif has played the Sikh character is just amazing. Who was more convincing as a Sardarji, me in Singh Is Kinng or Saif? I'll let the audience judge that.''
In the meanwhile plans for a sequel to Singh Is Kinng have been put on hold considering the sensitivity displayed by the Sikh community over beard lengths.
Apparently, Akshay and his producer-friend Vipul Shah now feel that the Singh Is Kinng formula should be allowed to rest until the intolerance level of various
communities goes down. Says Akshay evasively, ''Let me first finish what I've in plate. Then weâll see about the sequel.''Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 1 Aug 2009 | 3:10 am Magadheera - ReviewBringing out love stories or subjects with action backdrop to attract mass audiences is not new to the Telugu film industry. The first thing to be said about this incredibly enchanting excursion into the matter of the heart as seen in contemporary times and in times gone-bye-bye , is ... what's
wrong with these two people who are so much in love? We can see that love. They can't. That's the paradox of love in any era. The realization of its existence sometimes
takes inexcusably long. And by then, Cupid forbid, love is gone.
Love Aaj Kal is a take on love in current times, as seen through the eyes of a filmmaker who can keep an outstanding balance between cinematic language and the grammar of today's young generation.
Imtiaz Ali often weaves dialogues about the enduring place of love in times of acute contemporary contempetitives into conversations in American cafes without sliding into cynicism. He is clued into today's moods. But he doesn't subscribe to them. Nor is he judgmental about how today's youngsters treat love.
That's no small achievement, considering cinema about protagonists who are cynical about love in today's twitter-ing times often cannot tell the difference between the
language of love and the cynical attitude that colours contemporary relationships.
Love Aaj Kal connects with the feelings of love and commitment in a relationship deeply and with delightfully captivating candor.
Deeepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan play our two too-cool NRIs who think love is a commodity to be used at their convenience. Or, so they would like to believe that they believe.
Astoundingly the pair lies to one another about mutual love without for a second seeing through each other's deception. It's the way of today's world.
Imtiaz Ali portrays contemporary commitment phobia on a canvas that echoes an elaborate symphony. As we 'listen' to the heartbeats that pervade the magical moments of love, layer after layer of relevance and resonance emerge so effortlessly, you almost miss the compulsive passions that underline the director's vision of a world where emotions are often smothered for what today people feels to be more important issues.Imtiaz had proved himself to be a raconteur of remarkably unaffected and yet deeply affecting skills in Jab We Met.
There're elements from Jab We Met reverberating across the expansive horizon of Love Aaj Kal. The bustling Punjabi household, for one. Its infectious
bonhomie is intact. The great geographical distances covered by planes trains and more metaphorical means keep us watching the frames for much more than just the
characters and their words which are joined in a tight embrace to convey the emotional content . The director doesn't squander the engaging narration in pursuit of passions that could take the film into the dark region.
While addressing issues that directly question sexual and moral values in present times, the tone remains bright bouncy and bubbly.
Into the story of today's couple Jai (Saif) and Mira (Deepika) Imtiaz Ali weaves the incredibly romantic story of Veer Singh (Rishi Kapoor) and his balcony-ke-neeche love for the pretty Harleen (played by a newcomer who takes the 'pretty' status pretty literally).
The editing pattern and the mellow merger of the present and past replicate Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti. But here the issues are not political but
passionately personal.
Passionate love often looks preposterous to the onlooker. Not this time. The director derives a fulsome fragrance of mushy feelings from his two set of love birds without
letting them surrender to self-indulgent schmaltzy sensations. Though the protagonists are lazy about love, their lives are captured in movements that are as life-giving as that first morning cuppa.
There's a peculiar pragmatism to the way Imtiaz Ali puts forward his love gyan. In his realm of romance cynicism too is given a place. But it soon dissolves as the
characters resolve their dilemma of prioritizing practicality and emotions to realize that worldly ambitions are obtainable only when personal emotions attain a state of fruition and liberation.
Mira and Jai's journey into love is segmented into fascinating compartments of self deluding aspirations, some so self-contained they could make independent films. Saif's tryst with job-satisfaction in San Francisco and his rapid disillusionment with his work-related dreams is done like rapid images seen from a moving train.
Catch them if you can.
Would this film have worked without its two main players? Deepika Padukone's Mira is a moving image of modern misapprehensions on love, a magnificent montage of seductive emotions mapped on a face that's meant to be a classic yet a 'Mira'-image of contemporary times.
It's significant that Deepika plays an art restorer. In her performance she indeed restores the era of the leading lady who doesn't need to talk constantly or take off her clothes to be supremely appealing. Deepika creates a graph for her character without growing judgmental about the character's obvious shortcomings.
The script 'belongs' to Saif. He weaves in and out of the character of Jai who goes from smirking about Majnu to almost becoming one, with a conviction and energy that are symptoms of a hungry actor's pursuit and obtainment of a place to rest his considerable skills. In his other role as the Sardarji silently courting the girl next-door Saif does away with his habitual restless-energy and gently focuses on getting the emotions right without losing the character's body language and speech.
Rishi Kapoor comes up with the third fully-credible performance. But the off-centre space in the narration is also filled with other people who know this is not just a film about getting the accent mood and flavour right.
Love Aaj Kal is about a lot more than technicalities of love. We journey with the 'cool' urbane couple through three continents and many more emotional plateaus to finally crack that age-old mystery about the thing called love.
The truth is love will always hurt. And from that hurt is born some great contemporary art.
Take a bow, Imtiaz Ali.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 1 Aug 2009 | 2:42 am Police case against Shilpa Shetty - Bollywood Mantra

We all know Bollywood's most romantic couple Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan pine to spend quality time together. But the way they were stranded together on Wednesday in the jungles of Athirapilly in Kerala was anything but romantic.
The day, according to the unit, started normally and ended being one of the most calamitous and nightmarish days of the couple's life. Says a source, ''Abhi and Ash left with Mani Ratnam on Wednesday morning to check out an elephant which was supposed to participate in the shooting from next week. Little did they know what was in store.''
The elephant went berserk killing the mahout and taking off on a stampede that had Abhishek, his wife and director hiding in the jungles until people who could control the
elephant and rescue the couple could reach.
Says the source, ''For ten hours, Abhishek, Aishwarya and Mani went without food or water. They just hid themselves from the elephant's rampaging wrath. Finally, they were rescued late at night. But until then there was no news of their safety and wellbeing. Abhishek and Aishwarya's parents were delirious with worry.''
Raavan seems to be the most troubled film that Mani Ratnam has shot. From the director's health scare to a rampaging elephant to severe viral infections and
malaria, the cast and crew has seen and experienced enough to make a fast-paced thriller on the making of Raavan.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 31 Jul 2009 | 4:42 am "I'm so much like my character in Love Aaj Kal" - Deepika Padukone
Deepika says her character in Love Aaj Kal is exactly like her. "It was so much 'me' that sometimes I felt maybe I wasn't doing anything on camera. I had to look to my director Imtiaz Ali for reassurance. I was reacting on camera the way I do in real life. So far I was always doing things that didn't come naturally to me. This is my most honest performance. I can feel the growth in me in the four films and six roles that I've done so far. I've become freer with my emotions and lines."
Currently shooting for Sajid Nadiadwala's Housefull in London, Deepika is for the first time improvising on her lines. "I feel confident enough now to give my inputs. Yes, I can move around the emotions of my character. I know my space a lot better."
Deepika hopes to create magic with Akshay in Housefull. It was rumoured that Akshay had lost faith in his pairing with Deepika after Chandni Chowk To China.
Deepika scoffs at the rumour. "If that was true you think he would be doing another film with me at this moment? I don't think there's any formula for success. The failure of China Chowk To China didn't affect me. Of course considering the effort we all put in I was upset. I guess hard work isn't enough. But I learnt a few skills during Chandni Chowk which I'll use in other experiences of my life."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 31 Jul 2009 | 4:21 am Gayatri Devi's life part E.M Forster, part Jackie Collins: NYTGayatri Devi, the former maharani of Jaipur who died Wednesday, was 'one of the last remaining symbols of India's feudal past' and led 'a life of novelistic dimensions, part E.M.
