Week in Review: Kugelsacked

This week, Brüno told us jokes, got us drunk, and helped us love America again. Michael Jackson was mourned by us and others (but not Justin Timberlake or Nancy Pelosi). Also, he saved the music business, danced in a car, and was possibly the victim of foul play. What else happened?

• Jeff Tweedy was loved two times by Times.

• Kal Penn finally made it to work.

• Liz Lemon got paid.

• Nabokov's final novella found a home.

• 3-D flopped.

• A nytwyrk chynged its nyme.

• Jay-Z decided to finally learn how to use a pen.

Certain disaster was averted.

• Advertisers loved a show about advertising.

• There was no fooling Paul McCartney.

• Quentin Tarantino vigorously promoted a movie that will never exist.

• James Hibberd was tragically eaten by a shark.

Song of the Summer: Michael Jackson Rarities, Remixes, Covers and More!

According to Sasha Frere-Jones, "The summer jam of 2009 was determined at 2:26 P.M. P.D.T., June 25th. For the next two months, we will either be hearing Michael Jackson, avoiding Michael Jackson, or otherwise processing the symbiotic wind of data, rumor, sound, and news that is now 'Michael Jackson.'" While we respectfully disagree — not even the death of a deeply fascinating, back-seat grooving, once-in-a-lifetime pop icon will make us stop rocking “Best I Ever Had” ad nauseum — we do have to acknowledge that MJ’s passing has fundamentally altered the 2009 Song of the Summer field: you don’t need us to point out that the last few weeks have seen one giant, collective, head-first dive back into the man’s impressive catalog.

With that in mind, this week’s Power Rankings take a break from today's hits to go deep into the crevices of said catalog, tracking the best and most curious MJ oddities, rarities, covers, remixes, bonus tracks, tribute mixtapes, and more. As always, let us know what we've missed.

1. Thriller-era demos: We totally love the instructions to the engineer on "Billie Jean" ("more kick and stuff in the phones, I need 'em ... more bottom and kick in the phones" ) and hearing "Starlight" instead of "Thriller" is a head-trip. But as far as the music goes, the “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” demo particularly stands out: It’s jammier, the back-up vocals have more of an African call-and-response vibe, and, at one point, Jackson almost scats. You’re still a vegetable, though.

2. Cookin’ Soul Presents "Michael Jackson (Tribute to the King of Pop)": Surprisingly great meeting of music and lyrics, connecting MJ and rap without overstating the shared DNA. Great: "I Want You Back" feat. Lil Wayne; "Don’t stop ‘Til You Get Enough" feat. Jay-Z. Hilarious and smart: "Remember the Time" feat. 50 Cent; "Black or White" feat. Eminem. Just be sure to skip Kid Cudi on “Beat It.”

3. Rub Radio MJ Mix: D.J. Ayres of Brooklyn’s the Rub put together this mix a few years ago, but re-posted it on the 25th. He stays away from the most obvious megahits, and it’s still completely can’t-miss.

4. Erykah Badu and the Roots, “I Wanna Be Where You Are”: The Roots and Badu also collaborated on a jokey “Billie Jean” cover, but it’s “Where You Are” that has the team-up — a crack band, and the rare singer who has to confidence to fearlessly interpret Michael — reaching its potential.

5. Akon,Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”: In his review of the 25th Anniversary edition of Thriller, Rob Sheffield chose this track as the sole highlight from the album’s bonus covers, writing, it’s “actually kind of great — [Akon] slows it down into a piano ballad, lingering over the easily obscured lyrics.”

6. Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson, “State of Shock”: Mercury and Jackson recorded three songs together in 1983, two of which showed up in different iterations elsewhere. Two of the original demos leaked in 2002 (the other was “More to Life Than This”), and proved Michael could do histrionic hard rock with the best of them.

7. Ian Brown, “Thriller”: Before you dismiss this 2007 cover from the not-exactly-relevant ex-Stone Roses front man as a novelty, give it a listen: Brown’s louche, drugged-out reinvention is actually pretty great.

8. Michael Jackson, “HIStory” (The Ummah remix): The Ummah was the collective name for the production team of Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and J Dilla. Here, they turn the late MJ track into something smaller and sweeter.

9. Michael Jackson feat. Jay-Z, “You Rock My World” (remix): Michael’s hip hop influence was remarkable, but this remix, from 2001’s Invincible, is (as far as we can tell) the only official guest rap verse in his career. Makes sense: Jackson as a hook-furnishing hip-hop journeyman doesn’t feel quite right.

10. Supergrass, “Beat It”: The British rockers remind us just how white they are, as if they had to — still, their pure joy bashing out the track is infectious.

Investors Salivate Over Private Sample-Sale Sites

Investors are eager to pour millions into private online sample sale sites like Gilt Groupe, HauteLook and RueLaLa. They're a better investment than fashion companies whose bread and butter are sales made in stodgy physical stores. With these sites, operating costs are low, and it's tough for them to over-buy inventory since each sale is only comprised of a small selection of exclusive merchandise. The sites also excite consumers — in theory — by making them feel like insiders. If you really want a pair of Christian Louboutins for $250 and the sale starts at midnight, you're logging on at midnight with a nervous yet excited feeling. The thrill of the chase is — again, in theory — half the fun. And if you succeed in purchasing that pair of patent Loub pumps in a size 9 at 12:05 in the morning, you get not only a fabulous pair of shoes, but a story to tell your friends about how fashion savvy you are. "You don't know about Gilt Groupe? Hm. [Insert sidelong judgmental gaze]."

But that process is also exactly why we find these sites frustrating: When popular sales start, it's impossible to access the site until all the good stuff is gone. Also, some of the merchandise is seasons-upon-seasons old. With certain labels you might find newer stuff at better prices in secondhand shops. In any case, these sites are raking in cash. Gilt Groupe made $80 million last fiscal year. This fiscal year, they expect to make $400 million. They just received a $40 million investment in a two-year deal that values the company at $400 million. It's unclear whether these sites will have longevity — all too often, we lose patience with them. But, if we had millions to dump on a clothing venture, they sure are a better option than the Gap.

PC and Jessie Barred From Vodka Party for Being Underage

This is PC at a different party, for Keith Lissner's fall 2009 fashion presentation, with a person called "Tre."

Watching NYC Prep, you'd think that the young stars had access to any party they'd want to go to, regardless of the fact that they are all underage. At the launch party for Three-O Vodka (their slogan is "Show us your O-face") hosted by Kim Kardashian at Greenhouse last night, this theory was disproved. Jessie and PC from the show turned up and tried in vain to join their friend Ally Zarin from The Real Housewives of New York inside. Publicists refused to let them in because they were underage — even though Zarin, who also is not yet 21, was partying away inside. Jessie, wearing a gray tank and black skirt, and PC, wearing a short-sleeve dress shirt and excessive hair gel, were embarrassingly left outside on the sidewalk. Luckily, we were standing by as the awkwardness ensued.

Ally was outside the club, near the door, avoiding eye contact with the pair but trying to help out by texting someone. "Hey, can we get in?" Jessie yelled, as PC acted flustered and annoyed, standing behind her and mumbling under his breath. After a couple of minutes of waiting around and the bodyguard standing in front of them, the clipboard girl at the door is apparently told by higher-ups that publicity for her vodka client regarding NYC Prep kids getting turned away from the party is better than publicity about them drinking there. "No! No! They can't get in!" she yelps. PC huffs, "I'm outta here," and turns on his heel and leaves. Ally and Jessie follow.

We later e-mailed with Ally, who said they ended up at Via dei Mille. "It was fun," apparently. But not as fun as watching that go down, we'd wager.

“The Madison location became a neighborhood store, not a high-traffic store. It was never extremely strong for us. It’s important to have a store on Madison. It’s prestigious, but $2 million [in rent] is too high. Our average transaction is not as high as our neighbors.”

So it was just for show? Who were they trying to impress? Upper East Side residents? Wandering tourists? Labels who make real couture and also have stores on Madison?

Maybe they're so willing to give up the prestige because Madison doesn't have much anymore. A total of 49 spaces are available between 59th and 79th streets, including twenty vacant locations and 29 locations current occupants want to relinquish. "Landlords will have to bring down prices. Nobody will be willing to pay them,” Huber told WWD. Unless Juicy's departure somehow has the opposite effect?

Kelsey Grammer Is a Manscaper

Kelsey Grammer.

Yesterday the New York Times revealed the stunning news that men are now shaving their body hair, like women do, with the practice skewing toward men in their twenties and thirties. So we asked 54-year-old Kelsey Grammer about his own "manscaping" habits at the Cinema Society party for (500) Days of Summer last night. “I trim, but I don’t shave," he told us. "I think it could get pretty gruesome after a while — I mean, my beard is pretty nasty. I happen to be one of those men — uh, I like to bring it in a little closer to the body." Grammer admitted to grooming his chest hair. And as for other areas ... we didn't have the the nerve to ask about, you know. View our Party Lines slideshow for more.

Lara Stone Is Couture Fashion Week’s Top Model

Chanel

New models ruled the runways at couture. Givenchy, Christian Dior, and Valentino all chose fresh faces to open their collections: Thana Kuhnen, Antonella Graef, and Frida Gustavsson, respectively. Newbie Maria Kashleva closed out Jean Paul Gaultier — a spot typically reserved for the designer's favorite girls from seasons past. Meanwhile, Hanne Gaby Odiele opened what might be Christian Lacroix's last couture collection, and Vlada Roslyakova closed for the fourth season in a row. But only one girl could reign triumphant: Lara Stone. The model had the final look at Chanel, where she walked arm-in-arm with Lagerfeld's muse Baptiste Giabiconi. And a day later, she was first out of the gate at Gaultier. But what cements her win is her upcoming cover for the August issue of W magazine.

Girl Sold for Reasonable Price of One Bag of Millet, in Louise-Marie Colon’s Leila

One of the most intriguing events at the recently concluded Human Rights Watch Film Festival was a program called Youth Producing Change, a series of short films made by children in troubled countries around the world turning cameras on their own lives. The results were often touching and vibrant, as can be seen in Leila, a surprisingly sad yet ultimately charming little animation short made by Belgian animator Louise-Marie Colon and sixteen schoolchildren in Burkina Faso. The story of a little girl from a family of poor farmers who is exchanged for a bag of millet, it’s a dark, evocative, little fable featuring a rough animation style and the voices of the kids themselves. Clocking in around three minutes, it seems very simple — and it is, beautifully so — but we’re still finding it hard to shake, weeks after first seeing it.

Mayor Bloomberg: Still Not Poor

Mayor Bloomberg may have lost the Working Families Party nomination to Bill Thompson, but do working families have billions upon billions of dollars to spend at their whim? By definition, no. Bloomberg does, however, and so far he's burned through $36 million of it in his quest for a third term. As a basis of comparison, Hizzoner had only spent $23 million by this time in 2005. [NYP]

Cathy Horyn’s Choice Words on Valentino Couture

The response to Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli's fall 2009 couture collection for Valentino has been mixed. Though critics seem pleased the design duo finally took the label in a new direction, rather than reproducing Valentino's archives, the collection hasn't been wholly heralded. Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn just posted her response: "Ms. Chiuri and Mr. Piccioli designed accessories at Valentino before they were elevated. After this collection, I’m not convinced they are dress designers. Plainly their intention was to make something new and young, but these clothes remain concepts on paper. They have no feeling for the actuality of life, no sense of a lived experience, and frankly I’d be worried about getting too close to one of those prickly, encrusted numbers. You might get a rash." Barbara Corcoran Barks Up All Trees, Even Wrong Ones

In Jacob Bernstein's WWD profile of real-estate magnate Barbara Corcoran, we couldn't help but notice the constant repetition of a trope: that Babs relentlessly flirts with people, both verbally and physically. She jokes daringly with cameramen, grabs underlings' arms and asses, and pushes the envelope with language. Our favorite part, though, was when she hit on the reporter himself:

On three separate occasions, Corcoran grabs my legs and my arms and tells me how muscular I am. “Wow! Wow!” she says, all bright-eyed and amazed, as she feels my thigh. “I go to the gym three days a week and it’s the worst part of my day. How do you get like that? I wish I could do that.”

Oh, Barbara. Jacob is indeed cute and quite muscly, but we're pretty sure he won't be swayed by the wiles of a lady cougar.

The Post, however, had a different take: "KELLY'S KILLING AT CITI!" screeched their headline.

The ensuing article went on to gush about how Kelly is a "rising star" who has "earned kudos for his calm and reasonable management style." This was no comedown, Kaja Whitehouse wrote; Kelly has been "catapulted ... to second-in-command behind Pandit."

The move marks the fourth time Kelly has been promoted since arriving at Citi a little more than a year ago, and comes amid high praise both on Wall Street and in Washington for his work trying to fix the hobbled bank.

Wait, what? Which is it? Is Ned moving up or down? Despite Citigroup itself sometimes seeming to defy the immutable physical laws of the universe, it can't possibly be both. And it's not.

Of the few things the Post does really well, New York City business is among them, but we have to point out that they really whiffed on this one. Even their stablemates at the Journal are in line with the Times, noting in their story that "some regulators have questioned [Kelly's] qualifications to hold the top finance position."

Sorry, Kaja. Better luck next time. Better luck than Ned Kelly, that is. Both of them.

Tom Duane Gives Up on Marriage Equality, for Now

Yesterday, marriage equality's staunchest advocate in the State Senate released a disheartened letter to constituents regarding the bill. "I expect that the Senate this week will pass only time-sensitive, non-controversial legislation," he said, indicating that Paterson's measure to legalize gay marriage won't be voted upon before the body disbands (finally) for the summer. For the issue to be raised again, it will (for a third time) have to be passed by the State Assembly. From Duane:

As disappointing as it is to admit, it is clear that this week is not the right moment to address critical but controversial bills, such as those that strengthen tenant protections, safeguard reproductive health rights, grant marriage equality to all New Yorkers, protect transgender people from discrimination, streamline testing for HIV/AIDS, and give families a voice in incapacitated patients' health care.

However, we who have been championing this legislation will not be put off for long. During the weeks and months ahead the Senate will be called back to Albany to deal with a range of issues and I will fight to ensure that these vital bills which impact the lives of all New Yorkers come to the floor for a vote — and pass ... The June 8th coup may have delayed our progress, but it will not stop it.

Sounds like an awful lot of bills on that list of "critical but controversial bills" affect gay families — all of whom will, we're sure, understand that certain senators' quests for power were simply more important than having honest debate heard and decisions made regarding their basic rights. When they get told that 2010 is a reelection year for senators, and that the issue is "too controversial" to be taken up this fall, we bet they'll understand that, too.

This Guy Picked The Wrong Week To Start Being A Superhero

You know how in a lot of superhero movies there is a part where the authorities decide the hero is a menace and wants them arrested, but then the villian’s plan comes to fruition and everyone realizes that they need the help of the hero after all? Well this scene from Times Square yesterday has me worried there is trouble a-brewing:

supes_down

According to the New York Post:

Superman, aka Maksim Katsnelson, 23, of The Bronx, was arrested and charged with assault and resisting arrested, police said, accusing him of punching a female officer in the face while she was trying to subdue him.

The incident occurred when cops approached Katsnelson, who was panhandling, and asked him for ID.

When Katsnelson said he didn’t have any ID, cops continued to ask him questions, sources said.

That’s when Katsnelson punched the female officer, sources said.

Let’s hope we can spring Superman from the slammer in time before Lex Luthor kills more celebrities.

Hey everyone, had a fun two weeks with you all. Hopefully we can blog-out again soon.

PR Girls Who Don’t Know Where Darfur Is Bask in Brüno Press Blitz

We're beginning to understand the weaponry.

Nicole and Suzie DeFosset are twin sisters who run a PR firm in L.A. One day they took a meeting with someone described as a European personality who wanted to gain visibility in the U.S. and currently worked for German Television 1. Feigning interest in their services, he came into their office with a video camera and asked what charities are hot right now. They said, "Darfur." He asked where Darfur is. They didn't know. Nor did they realize the person interviewing them was a fictional character played by Sacha Baron Cohen. "We know Ali G and we know Borat, we’re huge fans. But Brüno, we didn’t recognize him at all," they told BlackBook. They didn't figure out they'd been had until eleven months later, when a friend of theirs saw the movie and told them they were in it. "And we didn’t think anything of it. We were like, what’s Brüno? And he was like, It’s Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie. And we were like, what?"

The ladies made the final cut and even appear in promos. Their reaction to the movie?

We just saw the movie and thought it was hilarious and Brüno is a comedic genius. We were directed on playing up the blonde roll (sic) and they definitely captured those parts! Like all reality shows it was cleverly edited and we are excited to be apart (sic) of a successful film.

But will all this publicity help or hurt their business? Someone will probably offer them a reality show because, all too often, to our great dismay, that's how life works. And Jessica Simpson's image crisis has left a void in culture, somewhere.

Obama Manages to Not Screw Up His Gift to the Pope

Based on his visit with Pop Benedict XVI earlier today, President Obama seems to have learned from the previous, infamous gift-giving failures that brought him so much grief on both sides of the Atlantic. This time the White House was able to procure a one-of-a-kind artifact rich with history — a stole that was draped for eighteen years around the body of St. John Neumann, the first American bishop to be canonized. Okay, not something most people would be ecstatic about finding under the Christmas tree, but for the Pope, we're sure it beats the hell out of a bunch of DVDs or an iPod. Of course, no international meeting could pass without some kind of awkward present, and the Pope did not disappoint. In addition to a signed encyclical and a mosaic of St. Peter's Basilica, His Holiness bestowed upon Obama a copy of a Vatican document on bioethics and the right to life. Just in case he wants to rethink things.

Humpday Director Lynn Shelton on Making the Leap Into Commercial Projects

“Maybe all the theaters will burn down before people get a chance to see it.” Her film may be opening today, but Lynn Shelton is still keeping her expectations low — which must come as a surprise to anyone who has been following the fortunes of the director’s Sundance phenomenon Humpday, a stupefyingly funny and amazingly poignant super-low-budget comedy about two straight best friends (Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard) who decide to make an amateur gay porn film together. But Shelton is a far cry from your starry-eyed overnight film-festival success. A forty-something mother with a background in experimental film, the Seattle-based Shelton has been following her voice and making decidedly independent videos and films for over a decade now, garnering numerous awards along the way. But Humpday has been a buzz title ever since its first rapturous screenings at this year’s Sundance, and Hollywood has come calling. Our hope is that her pile-on of good luck continues when American audiences finally begin to discover Humpday this weekend. Provided, yes, that all the theaters don’t burn down first.

Humpday is, in many ways, such a crowd-pleasing film that it’s interesting to find out that your background is in experimental film.
I first came to filmmaking at a very serious arts program, studying Photography and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts, which is really focused on helping people to become serious, professional gallery artists — like people who are going to show up at the Whitney Biennial, that sort of thing. I took a video workshop, thinking I’d get a chance to play around and not be very serious. In doing that, I started to find my voice. And when I started in video and film, it was about pure expression. I wasn’t thinking about audience; I was purely pleasing myself. My thesis project was an exploration of different levels of consciousness, about dream logic and dream states. Turning over a rock and seeing all the bugs and things under it. That was what my work was like.

So, when did that change?
I had a miscarriage, right in the middle of making a movie about the psychological and emotional effects of becoming a mother. I remember making a very distinct decision to make a film that would attempt to be accessible. I wanted to get the film shown on PBS. I still remained true to my visually poetic aesthetic, so what emerged was like a very grounded radio documentary, with beautiful, abstract, associative footage. And I realized I liked having an audience — I liked making work that was going to get seen by more than twelve people! I became less suspicious of making things more accessible. And I’ve discovered over the course of time that the things I like, other people like, too.

So, how did you get the idea for Humpday?
I wanted to work with Mark Duplass. We had a lot of mutual friends, and we had some bonding time in Seattle, on a movie called True Adolescents. I was the stills photographer, and he was just amazing to watch on set. I said I wanted to direct him in something. He said, “Pitch me something.” While I was thinking of something to put Mark in, another buddy of mine, Joe Swanberg, had come to stay with me. He saw some gay porn for the first time in this festival. It had a real effect on him. It was sweet — here was a straight guy talking about the gay porn that he had seen. And he talked about it a lot. It got me thinking about the relationship between straight men and gayness, and why that’s such a giggly thing. Even for the most progressive and open-minded straight guy, there is this residual anxiety when it comes to his own personal relationship to homosexuality. So that got my brain going. I loved the idea of two guys who were so straight that hey had boxed themselves in this corner, to be gay for a day.

It’s suspenseful — almost like watching people plan a bank robbery. It builds up to a specific event, and we see them preparing, and we’re asking, “Will they or won’t they?”
Yeah. I like that bank robbery comparison. It hopefully keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what’s going to happen next. Every scene draws you through — I have that very clearly in mind.

So, what about that final scene, when they go to the hotel room to try and make their movie?
Our outline ended at the hotel room door. We shot the film in sequence, and by the time we got to that hotel room, I told these guys, “You guys really know your characters well by now. We’re going for total honesty here. I trust you to live out this scene as these characters.” And so we left any preconceived ideas about the scene at the door. We totally dove in and then just worked on it chunk by chunk, all the while making sure these guys remained true to these two dudes they were playing. It was really exciting, and exhausting. By the end of the night of shooting that scene, the boys were actually convinced we didn’t have it. They thought I’d have to fly out to L.A. and have to do more shoots with them. But I was pretty sure we had it.

Summer Vacation Plans, Fashion Edition [Q&A]

Over the past couple of weeks, Cityfile correspondent Douglas Marshall has asked a few figures in fashion about their plans for the summer. What Chanel Iman, Fern Mallis, Thom Browne, Minnie Mortimer Gaghan, and Bonnie Morrison had to say below.

142883Chanel Iman
Model and co-host of MTV's House of Style
Q: What are you doing this summer, Chanel?
A: I'm still trying to decide what I want to do. I just had an amazing vacation in La Jolla, California and it was crazy. It was me and my best friend—I brought her along with me. We went paragliding in the sky and it was so much fun. So I want to do something crazy and wild. Like jump out of a plane or something.
Q: Are you an adrenaline junkie?
A: I guess you could say I'm an adventurist.

142884Fern Mallis
Senior vice president of IMG Fashion and judge of The Fashion Show on Bravo
Q: Do you have any exciting plans this summer? Fun travels, perhaps?
A: I'll be in LA to film the finale of The Fashion Show in July. It's happening at the same time that we're doing our Miami swim shows, so I'll probably have to miss that. But I'm happy to spend as much time in Southampton as I can during the summer.

142881Thom Brown
Designer
Q:
What are your plans this summer?
A: It's a lot of travel for work, but I always mix the two. So I'll be in Italy for work, but I'll probably go to the coast while I'm there and then come back here. I'll be relaxing and getting ready for September.
Q: Do you ever go out East at all or are you a Hamptons-avoider?
A: Not an avoider, really. You know, I go occasionally, but it's not my normal thing. I do different things during the summer.

142886Minnie Mortimer Gaghan
Designer, socialite
Q: What are your summer plans?
A: I'm going to London for a little bit in July with my husband who is doing research. [Minnie's husband is Oscar-winning screenwriter Stephen Gaghan.] He's going to talk to old spies and some people for a movie he's working on, so I'm going to tag along. Then I'm going back to LA and I'm going to surf until I get to Southampton because the waves are big in LA/Malibu. I'm going to be in Southampton for August.

142885Bonnie Morrison
Fashion publicist, girl about town
Q: What are your summer plans?
A: I'm always really bad about summer plans because I'm not terribly organized, so I always get to summer and don't have anything organized. But I am going to Rome next week. I'm sort of tagging along with a friend who's going for work. We're going to explore. We're going to do the Eternal City, the Vatican, all that stuff. So it's going to be super hardcore sightseeing, the sort of thing you can't stand to do when you are with your parents. But now I'm older.
Q: That's fun! Anything else?
A: Other than that? I think I'm just going to sort of let it rip.

Michelle Obama Wears a Designer Veil to Meet the Pope

Dressing to meet the Pope in the summer at the Vatican presents a sartorial conundrum. How does one stay cool, conservative, and chic all at the same time? Wearing expensive designer clothes is one way to make the dress code (and most things in life) more palatable, as Michelle Obama did yesterday. She met the Pope in a black skirt, top, and veil all by Moschino. See the full look in the Michelle Obama Look Book.

Charlie Gasparino and His Family Played Fun Games Together

"In some ways Citigroup reminds me of this nasty neighbor I had as a kid. He was a hazard to both the community and his wife and kids whom he used to abuse on a daily basis. Then one day he got into an accident; I believe he fell off the back of a truck, cracked his skull and was in a coma. We prayed for his timely exit from this world but he hung on, first for weeks and then for months. 'Neither God wants him nor the devil wants him,' my father remarked with a laugh one afternoon as we laid odds on whether he would live or die." Wow. Long car trips with the Gasparinos must have been a blast. [Daily Beast]

Michael Jackson Gets His Backseat Groove On During an R. Kelly Jam

As the news surrounding the death of Michael Jackson continues to grow more depressing and weird, we here at Vulture would like to interrupt the morbidness for a few quick moments to show you something MJ-related that ought to make you smile. In the following video, which was apparently shot by one Brett Ratner, Michael Jackson was riding around in the back of an SUV when R. Kelly's party classic "Ignition (Remix)" came over the car speakers. And while it doesn't appear that MJ actually knows the words to the song, that doesn't stop him from busting out some of the best backseat dance moves we've seen since the "Bohemian Rhapsody" sequence from the first Wayne's World movie. Truly amazing footage.

The Many Moods Of Malkovich

Master thespian John Malkovich attended the 44th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic yesterday (yep, THAT Karlovy Vary International Film Festival). Not to disappoint, John put on display his enigmatic, multifarious personality (translated: the dude is a nutbar) which I have catalogued here:

The Publicist/Hacker and the Scheming Decorator [Scandal]

142875We've received a bit more info on Ali Wise, the Dolce & Gabbana publicist and social fixture who was arrested this week for allegedly hacking into the voicemail account of interior designer Nina Freudenberger. And it looks like Freudenberger may not be quite as innocent as she's led on. As Page Six reported today, the man at the middle of this little squabble is Josh Deutsch, the founder of Downtown Records.

Both women were romantic with Deutsch, as Freudenberg confirmed to the Post today. The feud started, our source tells us, when Freudenberger caught wind that Wise had gone on a romantic weekend getaway with Deutsch—back when she was still involved with her boyfriend of several years, hotel owner Jason Pomeranc.

When a jealous Freudenberger learned that Wise had cheated on her boyfriend, we hear she took the initiative to call up Pomeranc and brief him on this news personally, which led Pomeranc to end his relationship with Wise. Naturally, Wise wasn't all that thrilled that Freudenberger had turned her in, and she retaliated by hacking into Freudenberger's voicemail account. "The paranoia started from there," the source tells us, which is why, as Page Six's source indicates, Wise has since "been targeting people who have been with Jason and her ex-boyfriend."

So no one is really innocent here. Not that anyone who travels in these circles ever is, of course.

The 10 Most Convincing Obama Impersonator Commercials

Barack Obama’s six month presidency can be interpreted any number of ways, but I think we can at least all agree on one simple fact: Obama’s impact on the world of local commercial impersonators is absolutely unprecedented.

Below, a list of ten commercials abusing Obama’s likeness that really sold me on their product, because I just love Obama so much, seeing any black guy with short hair in a suit reading copy off a prompter instantly convinces me of anything. Let the Obama-sploitation begin…

10. Ford of Champaign

Think we can film him from even further away? He’s starting to almost not look unlike the president…

9. Indonesian Heartburn Relief

The Secret Service Guys are really on top of things…

8. Horizon Screen Printing

The impression’s a little too accurate for me to be totally convinced, but I’m a big fan of the “no graphics, logo, phone number, etc” approach.

7. Chrysler Radio Ad

6. Live! Casino

A preview of Obama’s first State Of The Union Address. Both the audio and the camera angles.

5. Chia Obama

It’s real audio, but I didn’t realize Obama was talking about a Chia Pet that whole time. I’m voting for him again this year, somehow.

4. Denny’s

A submission for the Denny’s “Vote For Real Breakfast” Contest. It didn’t win.

3. Ford of Champaign II

I’m starting a “Concerned Car Dealer Man” Supporting Actor Oscar campaign. Who’s on board?

2. Central Kia

Wow, this car dealer actually got the real Obama! I’m impressed.

1. Japanese E-Mobile Monkey

Ooooooohhhhhhhh kayyyyyyy…………..  are we sure this isn’t an ad for the Post?

Other Obama-sploitation ads? Leave ‘em in the comments.

If you were thinking you could save a little money by canceling your gym membership and lifting the September issue of Vogue over your head in sets of 10, well, you're probably going to need to come up with a new plan: "You won't need a forklift to pick up those typically thump-heavy September fashion magazines this year. As publishers approach their closing deadlines next week, most are resigned to the fact that the issues will be about a third lighter than in years past." [WWD]

Jim Carrey Grandpa Headlines Give Everyone A Chance To Name Jim Carrey Movies

If you haven’t heard, Jim Carrey is going to be a grandfather. Congrats, Jim! We knew you had it in you (or I guess your daughter had it in her… I’ll stop). For some reason, though, several news outlets felt it necessary to remind people what movies he’s starred in right there in the headline. From People.com:

people_carrey
Get it? No lie? Because he was in Liar Liar. From E! Online:

carey_eonline
Yes, Man! I remember that movie! From some Canadian site:

carrey_canada
Swing and a miss, Canada. Son of the Mask was that terrible sequel with Jamie Kennedy. We’re trying to forget that happened here in America.

I say we all get in the Jim Carrey Movie Headline game. I’ll start:

Grandpa Jim Carrey To Be The Cradle Guy!

Jim Carrey Expecting An Eternal Grandson-shine Of The Spotless Mind

Coming Soon: How The Gramps Stole Christmas Starring Jim Carrey

Horton Hears A Who’s Pregnant?? Jim Carrey’s Daughter!

Womb and Womber – Jim Carrey Expecting A Grandchild

Ace Ventura is still up for grabs. Get on it.

Today Show Guest Loses A Million Billion Pounds (Somehow Without Eating Subway)

Nutty_professor_ver1This morning the Today Show had on a man named David Smith who once weighed 650 pounds, had a personal trainer move in with him, and then lost over 400 pounds [or the metric equivalent of one Kirstie Alley -- BOOM!]

The footage from the TLC documentary The 650-lb Virgin features some choice “fat guy stuffing his fat face” b-roll, which makes seeing the now skinny-David that much more mind blowing. Seriously, he doesn’t look like the same person.

Ladies, before you go running down to Rockefeller Center to throw yourself at this incredible shrinking man, you may want to wait for the pictures of all his excess skin at 3:34. It looks like melting ice cream coming off his body. My friend Pete thinks he should hold off on his planned surgeries to removed it and use all that excess skin to fight crime. I concur. Also, no word yet on whether David is still a virgin.

While You Were Turning Your Office “Days Without Celebrity Death” Counter To ‘2′

  • Mel Gibson SpikeMel Gibson will star in a upcoming movie called The Beaver about a depressed man who finds solace in a beaver hand puppet. Dave Coulier is kicking himself.
  • Police said the investigation into Michael Jackson’s death could turn criminal depending on the results of his toxicology tests. Is it finally time for a Law & Order series finale starring Chris Tucker?
  • The Brad Pitt Moneyball movie, which was scrapped days before shooting, could resume again with a new script from Aaron Sorkin. Producers claim the original script just didn’t have enough absurdly-literate characters interrupting one another.
  • Comedy Central greenliit a new comedy series starring Napoleon Dynamite’s Jon Heder. Here’s hoping the series isn’t ruined for me in advance by billions of AIM profile quotes.
  • I’m only casually familiar with the work of veteran soul artist Bill Withers, but this interview with the man is absolutely fascinating. Also, he never donated sperm, nor is he Paris Jackson’s father (spoiler).
