Source: Entertainment - Google News | 6 Jul 2009 | 10:56 am Rush Hour, X-Men director ties up with Reliance Big Pictures
Brett Ratner is thrilled to have tied up with Reliance's Big Entertainment to bring cinematic material from all over the world. He will now make a movie out of Rob Liefeld's popular Youngblood superhero comics from the 1990s.
Brett can barely contain his excitement. "Youngblood is the no.1 independent comic book in the world, on a par with Marvel and DC comics. So many studios wanted it. I was able to acquire Youngblood, thanks to Reliance who were very proactive in their decision .I'm very excited at the thought of making this film because I grew up on superhero comics. That's why I eventually made X-Men."
At one point Brett was supposed to direct Superman. "That's true. And when I couldn't do it, I was very upset. I thought there were no comic books for me direct. Brian Singer had X-Men, Sam Raimi had Spiderman....Which comic book would I do? Then of course I was able to do X-Men. After that I was hungry to do a series based on a comic book. I didn't want to do Iron Man because it's considered a 'B' comic book. Youngblood has such a huge fan base."
Brett has also acquired a French graphic novel on behalf of Reliance Big Entertainment. "It's to be titled Infinity. It will be directed by Sylvain White. I feel the boundaries between Bollywood and world cinema are evaporating. And material with a strong visual appeal will enable Bollywood to go global."
Speaking from Berlin, Brett says, "This tie-up with Reliance has given me more creative and financial freedom. For example, I've this deal with Paramount. I can go to them now with Reliance's financial proposal and get more room for quick and effective negotiation."
Brett can't believe how quickly he cut a deal with Reliance. "I met the Reliance team at the Cannes Film Festival. And before I could get back to the US, the contract was ready. When I met these guys I realized they loved cinema. And that's very important to me. In the US, the studio system is run by business giants who are not necessarily movie fans."
Brett feels Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire has irreversibly changed the global fortunes of Bollywood. "Look at how a small-budget film with unknown actors is garnering Oscars. Slumdog has opened up doors. It shows the US market that a hit movie can be made without Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks."
Brett wants to use his partnership with Reliance to bring Jackie Chan into Bollywood. "I did those Rush Hour films with Jackie Chan and I share an incredible relationship with him. And Jackie has told me that his cinema has an amazing market in Bollywood. I thought if I cut a deal with Reliance, I could bring the Jackie Chan movies into India. No other director in Hollywood is as close to Jackie Chan as I am. Every Chinese production that Jackie Chan acts in, he wants me to be part of it. The guy is a workaholic. He does 4-5 films a year. A part of those films with be produced by a banner Jackie and I will float together. And I'll pass on those movies to Reliance for the Indian market."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 6 Jul 2009 | 10:41 am Guess Who?

Kick starting the week is another edition of the most famous quiz here on Bollywood Hungama - 'Guess Who?' This week, we feature a new comer, who just tow films old, is looked at as the next big thing in Bollywood.
Her most hyped up debut film didn't work at the Box Office. However, it was pretty clear that this actress was going to make it big in Bollywood. Just recently, she was also signed up as the brand ambassador for one of the world's leading cosmetics and beauty products manufacturer.
So, if you think you know whom we are talking about, then go ahead and give this week's 'Guess Who' a shot and post in your answers below.

His films may not have taken Box Office by storm due to various reasons but Onir is still seen smiling. Garnering immense goodwill since the days of My Brother Nikhil and following it up with Bas Ek Pal and Sorry Bhai, he is seeing good help coming from his friends and colleagues from Bollywood, who are willing to extend a helping hand as he puts together his short films in place.
The latest happening is that composers like Pritam, Mithoon and Vivek Philip, with whom he has worked in his earlier movies, have consented to compose for his five short films. Though Onir is reluctant to divulge much about the remuneration involved (or the lack of it), he is ecstatic about the very fact that they were all there for him when he needed them the most.
Says Onir, "Mithoon gave some fabulous tunes for Bas Ek Pal and we knew that we would be there for each other. The result is Afia for which he would be composing music. Vivek (Philip) has composed at least one song in each of my three films and it's just right that he comes on board. There is also this new guy from Delhi, Rajeev Bhalla, who would be creating one song for Abhimanyu."
Talking about Pritam who had earlier done a guest composition for Bas Ek Pal, Onir remembers, "We know each other since the time he composed for a non-film music video of mine. At that time, he too had just started off before films like Dhoom happened to him."
Meanwhile his short films are being made with an entirely unique business model in place. "As co-producers, Sanjay (Suri) and I have extended a chance for audiences to be shareholders for our film which would comprise of five different short stories of 20 minutes each", informs Onir, "Though there have been a few promotional offers in the past ('Sit through the film alone and you could get five lakhs', 'Get your money back if you don't like the film' etc. etc.), the concept of audiences being shareholders is something new in Bollywood parlance."
He adds, "Though in West, some independent filmmakers have laid out such plans while accumulating funds for their films, it is perhaps the first ever in Bollywood. I look forward to individuals, corporate houses and NGOs who believe in our films and have trust in our intentions to come out and support our endeavour by contributing to it in terms of monetary help."
Help has come to him not just from common man (who have been actively contributing to his project already) but also the film fraternity. Recent addition to his cast are Juhi Chawla (who has earlier worked with him in My Brother Nikhil and Bas Ek Pal) and Purab Kohli (My Brother Nikhil) who would now be acting as well as financially contributing to in Megha and Rudra respectively.
"They have been kind enough to work in the film free of cost and also bring some money to the table. Moreover, Purab is also trying to raise some funds on his own. Budget for each of my short films is Rs. 30 lakhs and I am surprised to see that contribution has come from places as diverse as New York, Japan and Germany", smiles Onir who was recently in Bangalore to scout locations for first of his short films, Abhimanyu, which would go on floors in July.
Post the Bangalore stint, Omar will be shot in Mumbai and Afia is based in New Delhi. Meanwhile, locations for Megha and Rudra are yet to be finalised.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 6 Jul 2009 | 10:01 am Very few successes in strike-hit B'wood

Of late, Kareena has been bonding big-time with her father. And Randhir Kapoor couldn't have chosen a worse time to be out of the country. Just when Kareena's most important film was about to release, both her sister and dad are out of the country, hence their absence from the special screening on Tuesday night, last week, when Kareena invited just her family and no friends.
Saif tried to keep her spirits up. But Kareena was undoubtedly missing her father. Kareena these days is constantly in touch with her father, calling inquiring about his diet and health, visiting him as much as possible. And when Randhir Kapoor signed two films lately, his younger daughter was the happiest.
"He needs to work. He must work. He's such a talented actor. I've inherited my comic timing from my father, which you can see in Kambakkht Ishq. I know he'd love me in this film," says Kareena emotionally.

Thanks to Ajay Devgan, one of our most talented cinematographers, Aseem Bajaj, was in England this June to shoot an independent British film.
"It's a British production called The Dreaming Spires directed by Shamim Sarif. It's about the first American boy Joseph Connors who came to Oxford University to serve as a reader to a blind British female professor," says Aseem who has served as DOP to Bollywood films as varied as Chameli and Golmaal.
And to think the Dreaming Spires might have never happened for Aseem! He explains, "After U Me Aur Hum, I was supposed to shoot Ajay Devgan's next directorial project. But now he's busy with Rohit Shetty's and Milan Luthria's films. He's also doing Priyadarshan's next. So that left the rest of the year free for me."
Earlier Aseem had served as DOP on Shamim Sarif's I Can't Think Straight, a semi-autobiographical film about lesbianism which starred Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth. "But that was a partly Indian film in the sense that it dealt with the life of Indian characters. The Dreaming Spires has no Indian characters."
This time the casting was far more impeccable. Says Aseem, "In I Can't Think Straight, the accents of the two principal leads were all wrong. This time we're being very careful. Since The Dreaming Spires is an independent production, the budget is merely 200,000 pounds. So we couldn't afford big stars."
Aseem, who's currently shooting his wife Leena Yadav's Teen Patti, is naturally kicked about the British project. "I don't know whether I'm the first Indian DOP doing a full-fledged British production. But other DOPs like Madhu Ambat and Santosh Sivan have shot international projects. I'm happy to join their ranks," says Aseem who has recently shot a short-film on child abuse.
"It's an 18-minute British film on child abuse as seen through the eyes of a 21-year old man, who has grown up with memories of murdering his mother and crucifying his abusive father. He kills both the parents because while the father abused him the mother would watch and even encourage the abuse."
The film entitled Dissociation is directed by a young filmmaker Ish Thapar who's the son of the famed documentary maker Navin Thapar.
Says Aseem, "The film is obviously based on a real life incident. When I asked the director, he said it was a friend's story. I'm just happy doing something that talks about a very real incident and how it scars the individual."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 6 Jul 2009 | 9:08 am Why Abbas chopped Naseeruddin, Ratna's role? After "Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na", Naseeruddin Shah and his wife Ratna Pathak became lucky mascots for Abbas Tyrewala, but he has deleted their roles from his next "1:800 Love".Source: Entertainment News | 6 Jul 2009 | 8:44 am Arshad, Akshaye to tickle funny bones with 'Short Kut...' - Hindu
