A never-before recession has hit the entertainment industry. First the economic slump, then the 26/11 trauma...Bollywood has never been more crippled by adversities. And yet the potential blockbusters with stars charging the sun, moon and galaxy continue to be made. Subhash Ghai explains the economics of a crippled industry to Subhash K Jha.
An all-time recession has hit the world, and Bollywood. What is the status of the film industry's morale, and how do you feel about the present-day scenario?
Finally the time has come for a reality check in our industry too. We, the production companies surviving for thirty years were pushed back by financial tigers attacking the city of Bollywood. It was the first time when corporate companies entered without studying the nature of this creative industry and threw investors tons of money to everyone who mattered in the industry to create a perception among investors that they have bought over the industry or industry's best. They offered unimaginable prices to stars and directors without considering the economic logistics. The cost of every production went haywire. I was told that one company financed a producer with known losses on the paper just so that he could bring one star in his project. In the history of the movie business, we can see a director become successful producer... and a producer can become a distributor [Rajshri, Yash Raj, Mukta Arts]. But the reverse process could never be a success. Last year we could see financiers becoming distributors and producers. Everyone was creating paper wealth in the name of IPR. This unnatural escalation had to tumble down. But to our dismay every thing went extremely costly. My latest film Yuvraaj which could be made in Rs. 30 crores easily now cost us 50- plus... it just happened in one year... But now the storm is over...NOW everyone will get the place he deserves.

Download Acid Factory wallpapers
Irrfan Khan not only broke the traffic rules of South Africa to do some of the most glitzy car chase scenes ever filmed for Hindi cinema, he also fired from real guns ...a first for Hindi cinema.
"Yeah for Acid Factory...they were real guns. We wanted the action scenes to look absolutely real. We were skidding and firing down the highway in Cape Town with our heart in the mouth pretending to be absolutely fearless for the camera."
Though the crew had the relevant permission they could've been intercepted any time and questioned about breaking traffic rules and using real guns.
The thrill for Irrfan remains. "That was the fun of it. The hijinks were somewhat beyond our control. We were speeding at 80 mph and firing bullets everywhere including helicopters hovering overhead. I've never done such stunts before. And that too under such dangerous circumstances. The traffic rules there don't allow cars to go beyond 60 miles. And there I was half out of Mercedes speeding beyond the permissible limit. . It was dicey. Because I had never done something like this before."
Irrfan Khan who has been known for his realistic performances has become deeply enamored of escapist hijinks, thanks to his new pal Sanjay Gupta who has given him a macho gun-toting role for the first time in Acid Factory.
Irrfan Khan has just done some heart-stopping action scenes in Cape Town for Sanjay Gupta's Acid Factory.
And he's completely besotted by the machismo.
"I love that high life. Somewhere as an actor I craved to escape the realistic tag. And Acid Factory gave me that chance. Even the action director Tinu Verma said he was going to have a heart attack watching me do these stunts."
It was only when the shootout at Cape Town ended that Irrfan realized how close they were to calamity.
"When Tinu said we'd have to do it the next day, I got scared. Really scared."
Irrfan has just done the most sexually-aggressive character of his life. "In Dil Kabaddi I played a guy enamored of the sexually-liberated life he sees on MTV and other fast-paced channels."
Irrfan is very happy with the way Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is growing worldwide. "I play this rather mean cop. I haven't seen the film yet. But I'm really happy for what's happening to it. I'm very happy to be working with both Danny Boyle and Sanjay Gupta."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 2 Jul 2009 | 10:22 am When cartoons went looking for SRK in San FranciscoHis fan following across the world is anybody's guess.Source: Entertainment News | 2 Jul 2009 | 9:42 am I can wear chiffon sari for Yash Raj's next: AnushkaShe was not introduced with the poise and glamour associated with typical Yash Raj heroines.Source: Entertainment News | 2 Jul 2009 | 9:11 am Court extends Shiney Ahuja's judicial custody till July 16A Mumbai court Thursday extended till July 16 the judicial custody of rape-accused Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 2 Jul 2009 | 9:04 am Kabir Khan wants to drop 'serious filmmaker' tagHis "Kabul Express" was critically acclaimed and his latest release "New York" has turned out to be a commercial success widely appreciated by critics as well.Source: Entertainment News | 2 Jul 2009 | 8:47 am Imran burnt his lashes, skin while doing 'Luck' stuntsFrom going underwater with sharks to jumping from a helicopter on to a burning train, Imran Khan has done it all in his forthcoming film "Luck".Source: Entertainment News | 2 Jul 2009 | 8:42 am Jacko's family rules out public viewing at Neverland - Oneindia

In an era where everyone has access to at least one digital screen: mobile or computer, the makers of Kambakkht Ishq and Hungama Digital Media (Hungama) today announced the launch of a unique bouquet of digital promotions that gives Bollywood fans across the country, a connect with the film anywhere they go. The digital services which are conceptualized, designed and executed by Hungama aims to create fervor and excitement about the film through varied avenues like the Kambakkht Ishq mobile game, a mobile Voice VAS service by Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor and a blog written by the film's director Sabbir Khan on www.bollywoodhungama.com
The Kambakkht Ishq Mobile Game is a fun-filled racing game which allows users to play the role of Akshay Kumar and highlights the bittersweet gender wars between the two protagonists of the movie. The user has to complete various stunts and collect objects in the exciting and fast paced racing game to complete the game. In the mobile voice VAS service, Akshay Kumar reveals a few of his stunt tips for all the young aspiring stunt men; and Kareena Kapoor advices women on beauty tips. All people have to do is pick the phone, dial a number and listen to the stars of Kambakkht Ishq speaking to them.
Commenting on these unique initiatives, Neeraj Roy, Managing Director and CEO, Hungama Digital Media said, "India is the fastest growing mobile market with over 400 million subscribers; and with over 50 million people accessing the Internet, movie makers clearly cannot ignore the digital space anymore. With Kambakkht Ishq, we have explored both the internet and the mobile platforms, with promotions that capture the essence of the film that has such a great international appeal."
Elaborating on this, Sajid Nadiadwala said, Kambakkht Ishq is an action-packed, romantic comedy that will appeal to everyone. This movie also tickles the 'war between the sexes' that the youth will especially connect with. We needed to promote the film through platforms where youngsters are present and today I see every young boy or girl digitally connected, either with a phone to their ear or their eyes on a computer screen. We at Nadiadwala Grandsons are very keen on exploring innovations in marketing, and Hungama has given us a great platform to create some fun elements of the film."
Added director of Kambakkht Ishq, Sabbir Khan said, "This film is extremely unique in the way it has been written and directed and keeping in line with that I wanted to promote this film through distinctive platforms. Since this film also stars international celebrities like Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh, I thought it would be best to use the digital platforms that give fans in international markets an insight of the film before its release. I am extremely excited about the blog on Bollywood Hungama to keep fans updated with the latest about the film."
The stars of the film Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor were also present during the launch today. "I have always looked forward to doing an exciting film like Kambakkht Ishq and the film being translated into a game and a voice service on the mobile platform. Both these are extremely innovative and entertaining. I hope my fans especially enjoy the 'Stunt Tips', but they must all be very careful while doing them," said Akshay Kumar. Kareena Kapoor added,"I loved sharing my style tips with my fans. I hope all the ladies love all my style tips"
Each and every filmmaker wants to give his film immense attention before its release to create a space in the audiences' minds that does not merely create awareness but instead goes a step further to ensure a 'buy-in' to the film by creating a sense of anticipation and excitement. Kambakkht Ishq is a perfect example where digital marketing is used beyond just run of the mill concepts to using the platforms to connect people with the stars and movie concepts.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 1 Jul 2009 | 7:47 pm My film is not called 'Yahoo': Ken GhoshAs reports of Ken Ghosh's Shahid Kapoor and Genelia D'Souza starrer being called "Yahoo" fill the papers, the director is one worried man.Source: Entertainment News | 1 Jul 2009 | 6:00 pm When cartoons went looking for Shah Rukh in San FranciscoHis fan following across the world is anybody's guess. It looks like Suchita Bhatia who has leveled charges of plagiarism against the makers of New York is in trouble.
Yash Raj Films, the producers of New York, have decided to take legal action against Bhatia for alleging that the script which was made into New York was originally suggested to Yash Raj three years ago by her.
Confirming these developments, New York director Kabir Khan says, "This is really unfortunate. I wonder which cave this girl was living in so far to suddenly wake up five days after our film released to realize that New York is about three friends against a 9/11 backdrop."
Kabir sees this as nothing but opportunistic timing. "It's a great method of getting her 15 minutes of fame. Yes, we're planning to sue her and make an example of this sort of post-success harassment that filmmakers go through."
The director is very angry. "Why does one have to keep fighting to protect one's integrity? By suing this girl I hope to discourage such frivolous charges in the future."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 1 Jul 2009 | 2:15 pm Bipasha shows how to 'fly' to keep fitBollywood actress Bipasha Basu was at her sporty best when she demonstrated how to 'fly' to keep fit using a new gym workout - Jukari Fit To Fly - at an event here Wednesday.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 1 Jul 2009 | 1:31 pm Deepika regrets making her relationship with Ranbir publicDeepika Padukone has everything going for her in Bollywood.Source: Entertainment News | 1 Jul 2009 | 1:07 pm
