"I do not identify with any of my characters in any of my films" - Akshaye Khanna

Download Short Kut wallpapers Even though he is the proverbial 'star-son', he has achieved whatever he has, on his own merit. Even though his debut film gave Bollywood its answer to Tom Cruise, he is yet to make it to the 'Numero Uno' slot, something that he makes no qualms about. He is none other than the suave and sexy Akshaye Khanna, whose sex appeal lies in his smile, a fact that will be 'justified' by million of fans worldwide. After having garnered rave reviews and critical acclaim in his last film Gandhi My Father, this debonair man is back. This time with a comic caper called Short Kut - The Con Is On. Bollywood Hungama caught up with this actor for an exclusive interview. Excerpts of the same: Akshaye, to start with, why such a long gap from Mere Baap Pehle Aap to now Short Kut - The Con Is On? Was it intentional to stay out of the media glare or did it just happen? Basically, the film business is not about any one person's schedule. It's about lots of people coming together, which only means that it's not in your hands to control the number of releases that you have in your hands. It's not the case with just one actor, it happens with most of the actors. To top it all, the recession factor has affected the film industry in a very bad way. As you know, there are so many films in the last 6-7 months have either been shut down or have been postponed. Even a couple of films of mine which were supposed to start at the beginning of this year, have been scrapped due to various reasons. I myself have not faced the camera for almost 6 months now! Short Kut The Con Is On is essentially a slice of life kind of film What is Short Kut - The Con... all about? And what's your role in it? Short Kut - The Con Is On is essentially a slice of life kind of film, based on essentially two characters. There are times in life when we have to choose between two routes. One of which is a shortcut- the easy way, while the other requires more efforts and struggles. The film's characters also face the same dilemma. One is Raju (played by Arshad Warsi), who is playing a struggling actor and who wants to become a star. He bluffs his way out of trouble and comes across as a good for nothing harmless fellow. Arshad, who is majorly known for his out and out comedy, brings out a dark edginess to this loud mouthed character. On the other hand, I play Shekhar, a struggling writer-director, who has been an assistant director for years and hopes to make it big one day, like anybody else does. I have this quiet yet intense, immensely talented yet low key kind of role. Shekhar's value system is sound and his fundas in life are very clear - come what may, there are no short cuts to success. And if you have a dream, protect it. One of the main reasons for me to say yes to this film was the fact that it was being written by Anees Bazmee and Neeraj Vora, two of the best writers in Bollywood As for the film, it is set against Bollywood as its backdrop. And the Bollywood factor is very integral to the script because the characters are from the film industry. The film is basically about the choices that one often has to make in life, be it in work or even relationships. The film is treated in a fun and entertaining manner and is not at all a serious film, by any stretch of imagination. How these two characters go about achieving their goals and ambitions in a fun way is what the film is all about. You are one actor who is not known for rushing into things and signing the dotted lines. So, what was it so exceptional about Short Kut that made you sign the film? Let's not use the word 'exceptional' or any such superlatives. It's always the script that has drawn me towards it. You just can't have a great script but a lousy director or is being produced by someone who is not capable of releasing the film. These are also important issues. But, as I told earlier, for me, it's the script that comes first, then the role, followed by many other factors. I think that people will love and remember Arshad for his role in Short Kut. As far as Short Kut is concerned, it was definitely the script, followed by my role. Also, one of the main reasons for me to say yes to this film was the fact that it was being written by Anees Bazmee and Neeraj Vora, two of the best writers in the industry in the genre of 'masala' films and comedy. It was an exceptional opportunity for anybody associated with this film as these two names were coming together for the first time. It's also very difficult for such a thing to happen again. You have the Master comedian Arshad Warsi as your co-star in Short Kut. How was it working with him? If you take his filmography, then, one would say that he would always be remembered for his role of 'Circuit'. But, in my opinion, the role that he has done in Short Kut is at par with that of his role of 'Circuit'. And I think that people will love and remember him in this film. Amrita Rao is a very lovely and a hard working girl, whom I would call as 'original actress' Akshaye, you are known more for your serious roles. Was it easy or difficult to match up to the antics of Arshad? Not at all. Actually, the fact remains that working with actors who are the best at what they are always is a plus point to those who are working with them. It just does not 'take' away anything from you, on the contrary it 'gives' something which a bad or inexperienced actor will never give. Arshad is definitely someone to watch out for in this film. In Short Kut, you have been paired opposite Amrita Rao. How is she as a co-star and how has been your equation with her? She is a very lovely and a hard working girl. What I like about her is that she doesn't try to copy anybody or be somebody else. She is someone whom I would call as an 'original actress' and essentially a very sweet girl to work with. In other words, she is very simple and not at all complicated. Amrita has always carried the 'girl next door' image with her. If the promos of Short Kut are anything to go by, then, it seems that she has moved notches ahead to drop this image. What's your take on the same? I know that this is the first film in which she has been glamorized and shown in a very different way like never before. She has done it really well. She has worked really hard. I enjoyed every moment of me working with her and am looking forward to work with her in the future too. I think that she has got a great future. Click above for more movie stills How has the music of the film evolved? Which is your favorite track from the film and for what reasons? I am a huge fan of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy ever since I 'discovered' their music in Dil Chahta Hai. Ever since, every track of theirs was a masterpiece for me, be it Salaam-E-Ishq, Kal Ho Na Ho, Lakshya. All of their albums were outstanding. And as far as the music of Short Kut is concerned, I don't think that any of their fans will be even remotely disappointed with it. They have really given us an exceptionally rich album. Like most of their albums, this album too, I feel will stay fresh for a long time. And my favourite track in the film is the romantic 'Kal Nau Naje' that has been picturised on me and Amrita. It's a beautiful melody and I think that its one of the best songs that I have been fortunate to have in my career. In real life, you have always been a 'mover and shaker'. But how much of a Short Kut's Shekhar are you? Frankly speaking, I do not identify with any of my characters in any of my films. What are the locations the film has been shot? The film has been shot primarily in Mumbai and one stint in Thailand. Any memorable incidents while shooting the film? Whatever kind of film, be it comedy or action, it's a serious business, which means pure hard work and concentration. Which is why, the entire filmmaking experience becomes a memorable incident in itself. The entire filmmaking experience becomes a memorable incident in itself Have you, at any point in life, taken any 'Short-Kuts' to success? Not that I can think of, especially in the kind of business that I am in. Taking shortcuts is suicidal. That's why I can clearly say that I have never taken any shortcuts to success, even though lots of people feel that star-sons always have a natural short-cut into Bollywood. This is a notion that prevails in majority of the public's minds, something that just cannot be changed. To all such people, I have time and again, cited the example of a carpenter who wants his son to become a carpenter too. In such cases, all that he can do is to present his son with his set of tools and clients. At the end of the day, 'only' if the son makes proper utilization of these 'inheritances', can his business survive, else, the business will be doomed. The same applies for star-sons too! Taking shortcuts in my profession is suicidal What's your take on the multiplexes issue that had got the entire industry to standstill? Do you feel that this could have been avoided? It's very difficult for me to comment on this issue as I have not been following the intricacies of this debate closely, whatever arguments they had to sort out between them. So, I am not in a position to give an accurate comment in the same. Have you been approached for Qurbani's remake? No. I haven't been. I haven't been approached for Qurbani's remake Despite the number of years in the industry, you still have to make it to the top slot. What's your take on that? I believe that everybody has got their own destiny. And, as an actor, one tries to do the best in every film and in whatever way possible. And then it's up to God, the audiences and one's destiny what happens after that! Are there any surprise elements (cameos) that will surprise the audiences in Short Kut? As the promos depict, all the characters of this film have been revealed. All in all, it's a very transparent film. Lastly, what is the status of your forthcoming films? I will be starting Anees Bazmee's No Problems next month, which should be out early next year. Then, there's an untitled film with Priyadarshan which has me and Ajay Devgan in it and is being produced by Ajay himself.

Simi Garewal's sequence from Short Kut gets chopped off

Simi Garewal Not many may be aware, but the elegant lady-in-white, Simi Garewal, had shot for Anil Kapoor's home production Short Kut- The Con Is On. Simi played herself in the film and was part of a sequence where she had Arshad Warsi as the special guest on her famous talk-show 'Rendezvous with Simi Garewal'. Arshad, who plays a struggling actor, ends up talking a whole lot of nonsense in the show thus making it a hilarious scene. However, disappointing as it may sound, in the final edit, the scene was removed to keep the film's length under check. The running time of Short Kut- The Con Is On is 130 minutes, the ideal length of a crisp comedy, and the makers didn't feel like stretching it any longer. If the scene had been retained, cine-goers would have got the opportunity to see Simi on the big screen after over two decades. She was last seen in her directorial debut Rukhsat (1986) co-starring Mithun Chakraborty and Anuradha Patel.

Blog: Shiney Ahuja and his Bail Application

Shiney Ahuja I have been consciously avoiding this topic as it has been milked dry by both the visual and written media due to the perpetrator being an upcoming movie star. With the DNA forensic results out in the open, it will be very difficult to get bail as the results have conclusively proved that Shiney Ahuja's stars and a lot else are not shining any more. Kudos to his wife for standing up for him unflinchingly, showing faith in her "Man" - but a lot of introspection would probably be required on her part to realize for herself why her "Man" has done what he did. The bail petition which has been put up by Shiney's lawyer talks of four grounds on which he should be granted bail - a) he has no criminal antecedents, b) hails from a good family, c) his career is at stake and he has two upcoming film shoots next month, d) consensual act cannot be termed rape. After the DNA test reports are out, there is no reason why he should be granted bail as the law should be equally applicable to all (I know it is wishful thinking in India, but still...) - the test reports conclusively prove that the act was indulged in, the injuries on both the persons prove that it was not consensual as claimed by Shiney. Let us go through each ground for bail - no criminal antecedent - yes it is a ground for bail but not in a violent crime like rape - a first time offence indulged in violence which included violation of the victims' human rights, specially of a person who is a domestic worker and a teenager to boot with her whole life ahead of her. This was a pre-meditated act of a person who has probably been frustrated over time - so even a first time offence should be looked at severely due to the nature of the crime. The second reason cited does not hold any legal grounds for granting bail - it is a tragedy that a good family has given birth to a person who could carry out such a bestial act! I feel sorry for the guys parents, wife and kids. The third reason granted is the most arrogant of them all - his fledgling career could suffer and he needed to complete his films. The films can go for a toss if you ask me - the producers can surely find a replacement for him - I do not know which heroine would want to act opposite such a guy knowing that the guy had recently raped a helpless domestic. The last reason has been proved invalid with the forensic report on the DNA analysis! Shiney Ahuja The arrogance of people with money and some kind of clout was on display all along, with his wife claiming that her husband was a good guy and was lured into a honey trap and raped by the domestic! This was the most ridiculous reason given - she most likely was in denial - and wanted to show public support - this I can understand but in doing so she was painting her husband as the victim and the helpless violated victim as the criminal. Earlier, during interrogation in police custody, the actor allegedly broke down after the medical reports confirmed that the maid has been raped. "The maid resisted but I forced her into it. I told her that she should stay mum. I was confident that she would not tell anyone of the incident and I was ready to give her whatever she wanted to make sure that she would keep quite. I have made a grave mistake," Shiney had confessed. In my opinion this sorry episode should be got done and over with as soon as possible with justice seen to be done and the victim compensated. This should be made a fit case for the rights of women in India - and justice should be seen to be delivered. I cannot imagine the plight of the girl - knowing India and the society we live in she will most likely be ostracized by her own people instead of being supported. Being from a poor family, it is most likely that she may be asked to withdraw her complaint for adequate monetary compensation which will be taken away by parasitic members of her family. She will most likely end up being further abused and violated by male members in the vicinity of her residence as they would probably think that she is easy taking. I am sorry if I am saying this, but it is the truth, the convoluted male mind thinks like this. Nobody talks about the rights of the victim, unless the victim comes from a good family and has the clout to demand justice - let the courts make this a show piece event and ensure that the girl gets justice and the perpetrator is punished in a way which will deter people contemplating such crimes to desist from going ahead! This could be a REAL - "reality show" with serious issues at stake Girish's blog can be accessed at http://girishborkar.blogspot.com/2009/06/shiney-ahuja-and-his-bail-application.html If you have an interesting Bollywood blog to share, do email us Disclaimer: The opinions expressed herein or statements made in the above column are solely those of the blogger, and do not necessarily reflect the views of IndiaFM. "I'm not going to stop hanging out with Soha" - Kunal Khemu

Kunal Khemu "Just because people are talking, I'm not going to stop going out with Soha," says the new defiant Kunal Khemu Kunal who has just delivered a reasonably successful film 99, at a time when the movie business is seriously recession-hit, is in an incredibly defiant mood. "What do people mean by going on and about me and Soha? We've done two films together. We get along well. We enjoy each other's company. There's nothing more to it. If people choose to put 2 and 2 together and make 22, we can't stop being friends." Kunal admits he was in Delhi this week when Soha was there. "But she was there for her own work. I was there for the opening of a friend's gym." Kunal Khemu is no longer the sweet docile kid who obeyed and observed filmy rules meekly. After sporting long beatnik hair for two years he recently cut it all out for 99. Explains Kunal, "When I came in as a hero in Kalyug I had no choice but to find external props to look mature. Everyone commented on how baby- faced I looked. So I decided to grow a beard. But forget a beard I didn't even have stubble! So I did the next best thing. I grew my hair really long. Finally I've gotten rid of it and I feel better because people say I look better." With the more mature look came the link-ups. "Suddenly I'm a suitable candidate for romance. That's fine. But I'm not seeing anyone, though I may be seen in public places with someone." It isn't flattering for Kunal to be written about his female friends at a time when he's trying hard to find a place for himself under the sun. "It hasn't been easy for me to be an actor. Agreed I did films as a child. But everyone thought that was more a disadvantage because child actors never make it big. I did films which I thought would work. I'm very proud of Rohit Jugraj's Superstar where I got to do a double role of a very different kind from how they're seen in our films." When that didn't work Kunal was disheartened. But not defeated. "I really enjoy acting. To me it's like going back to play school. I wouldn't give it up for the world. When we released 99, everyone said it could go either way. People might stay away because they were in no mood to visit theatres. Or they might go because they were starved for new films. Luckily for me they went for it." Right now, Kunal is in the process of starting two new projects. "But until the day I reach the set and the camera rolls, I'm not talking about it. There's many a slip between the camera and the action." Any resentment about actors with half his talent racing ahead? "None at all. I won't say I'm satisfied with what I've got. But I'm happy."

"I want NY, LAK, Kaminey and Kambakkht Ishq to do well" - Akshay Kumar

Click above for more movie stills For Akshay Kumar, it is the collective good run of all Bollywood biggies in the pipeline that matters most. Even though his film comes a week after New York and would be followed by much anticipated movies like Love Aaj Kal and Kaminey, he wants each of them to be a multi crore extravaganza at the box office. Reason? The industry has suffered from a virtual draught at the box office for half a year's duration and it's high time that 'mandi mein wapas paisa aa jaaye' - as stated in his own words. Joginder Tuteja gets chatting with the man who is currently holidaying in the US but would be in Mumbai in time for the film's release. Chandni Chowk To China and 8X10 Tasveer didn't work at the box office. How did you cope with such situation? This kind of flip-flop does happen in the industry so it's ok; one can't take such things to heart. Some films work and some do not. It doesn't mean that you hold anything in particular against something or someone. You have to move on. But both Chandni Chowk To China as well as 8X10 Tasveer did get hammered quite strongly by most? Haan, critics ne kaafi bura-bhala kaha tha in filmon ke liye (yes critics did come quite strongly on both the films). Still, I won't say that Chandni Chowk To China was a bad film. Even in 8X10 Tasveer I took a risk. But then you know how artistic films are treated in India, especially when they come out of Bollywood! Such films have small audience and one has to keep that in mind as well. I won't say that Chandni Chowk To China was a bad film Regarding Chandni Chowk To China, till the release of New York, it was the only film that took some reasonable opening at least. I didn't intend to speak about it but since you have brought it out, let me state that box office has its own story to tell. It has seen highest collections so far and though it was certainly less than what all of us were expecting, it has still been far better than any of the other releases in the year. However, people did write so much negative about it that it couldn't go beyond a point at the box office. Akshay Kumar You must be quite positive about Kambakkht Ishq though. Well, yes indeed. I really-really hope that the film works. It has been such an extended period of draught over last six months. Entertainment has just come down and it's high time that people go back to theaters for their staple diet of movies. Over last so many months, there was so much recession, so many problems that a common man could not dream of going to theaters. People were not getting their salaries, they were loosing their jobs. In such a situation, things only turn worse for film business. I really-really hope that Kambakkht Ishq works You believe that situation has improved now? Very much so because honestly I had thought that the bad run would continue for an even longer period. I am just not talking about movie business but economy in general. Of what I collect from the market scenario, the situation has improved tremendously over last couple of months or so. There is a certain stability that has come in. We have a stable government, the stock market has gone up again and I see similar positive trend for Bollywood as well. Things are much better now. Itne waqt andhere ke baad ab jaise waapas savera aa raha hai (after an extended period of darkness, there is finally some light)! Isn't it ironical that the same media that went hammers and tongs at you a few months back is now saying that you will get audiences back with Kambakkth Ishq? When they say like that then it only feels good. You want to be a part of something that works for the industry, works for the audience, works for the producer, and works for yourself. If my Kambakkht Ishq can improve the industry situation then I can only be proud and happy about that. But honestly, I want all films releasing this season to work. There are these biggies like New York, Love Aaj Kal and Kaminey coming one after another around my film and I want all of them to work. If my Kambakkth Ishq can improve the industry situation then I can only be proud and happy One doesn't find an actor saying this too often when so much is stake for his own film. But then there is so much at stake for all of us out here, isn't it? I hear that during the strike, around Rs. 300 crores have been lost. We have to have something running to compensate for the losses. Aisa hoga tabhi mandi mein paisa wapas aayega (only if this happens would there be some money inflow into the industry); films would be made, people will get work. These are all important films and I want all of them to do extremely well!

Apoorva Lakhia's next based on Khalistan movement starring Sanjay Dutt, Big B

Apoorva Lakhia Realism has never been more in demand. And Sanjay Dutt who until recently was doing mainly fantasy is now on the realistic route. He'll soon start Raj Kumar Santoshi's film set in the Partition period. Dutt also plays a real-life cop in Rahul Dholakia's Lamhaa set at the heart of Kashmiri militancy. And now, Sanjay Dutt will take time off to play a real-life cop who waged a fierce battle against terrorism in Punjab at the peak of Khalistan movement. Apoorva Lakhia, who has been in hibernation after the ill-fated Mission Istaanbul, is all set make a comeback with a film on the cops who battled Khalistani extremism. The terror situation in Punjab during the 70s and 80s will be recreated through rigorous research on that period. Lakhia says the film will occupy the same gritty real-time-real-space as his film Shootout At Lokhandwala. Sanjay Dutt will be playing a real-life cop, one among the group who helped exterminate extremism in Punjab. Amitabh Bachchan will also play a real-life cop in this 'period' sharp shooter. "It will be in the same genre as Shootout At Lokhandwala," says Lakhia about this film, which will be produced by Ashtavinayak. The last time we visited Khalistan it was for Gulzar's dark intense and lyrical Maachis. Lakhia's film tends to take another grittier brutal and violent route.

"I will always be indebted to Karan Johar" - Soham Shah

Soham Shah He mysteriously disappeared after his debut film KAAL released. But LUCK seems to have brought Soham Shah back. "After parting from Dharma Productions, I had to start my struggle all over again. A lot of people took advantage of the situation, considering the controversy that followed our split [Karan Johar and Soham parted on a bitter note]. Something would always go wrong at the last minute and I was 'out of work' for almost four years, till LUCK happened," Soham reminisces. That Soham and Karan Johar had a bitter split is known to all and sundry, but according to Soham, it was a professional decision he took at that stage in life and he doesn't regret it one bit. "I am whatever I am because of Karan Johar and will always be indebted to him for that," says Soham with a lot of gratitude. So how did it finally work out with Shree Ashtavinayak? "A friend [Rafi Kazi] wanted me to meet Rajbhai [Mehta], which I initially refused since it had become difficult to judge who was fake and who wasn't. But after my first meeting with Rajbhai, I felt some weight in his talks and that's how we went ahead with the film," Soham states, "Somewhere, I have to give maximum credit to Sanjay Dutt for making this work. He believed in me and supported me whole-heartedly." LUCK stars A-listers like Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Mithun Chakrabarty and Danny Denzongpa. But what stands out is Ravi Kishan, who has been cast in a crucial role. "When I watched 'Big Boss', I could see a relation between him and the character he plays in the film. Even the people at Ashtavinayak were initially hesitant, but after we gave him a makeover [to look the character], everyone was unanimous that he was the right choice," Soham says. The talented director now has two more scripts under construction and one of them is meant for Sanjay Dutt's production house. Well Soham, hope LUCK's on your side this time around!

"The invisible force is the driving force of 'Agyaat'" - Ram Gopal Varma

Ram Gopal Varma Let's clarify about the new installment of SARKAR, before we let Ramgopal Varma talk of AGYAAT, his new outing. "I don't think another installment will have the same effect after the peak SARKAR RAJ reached, especially now that Abhishek is gone [the actor was shot dead in SARKAR RAJ]," RGV states, thus clearly signaling the end of the SARKAR series. Right now, RGV is looking at AGYAAT, which, he clarifies, is not a horror film, but a thriller. "Fear doesn't necessarily come from the supernatural. Fear can also come from something one cannot see. That invisible force is the driving force of AGYAAT," he elucidates. Fear or horror, as we know by now, has been RGV's forte and is the basis of almost every second film he makes. So what is so different about AGYAAT? "I can confidently say that this film is way ahead of anything I've done earlier. Creating a fearsome character just by its sound is a difficult task. Also, the jungle we've shot in is nothing like any jungle people might've seen before," RGV reveals. Unlike most RGV films, AGYAAT doesn't boast of big stars, rather most of them are rank newcomers/lesser-known names. "New faces don't carry the burden of expectations, so I get freedom to place my characters. In AGYAAT, you could say that the jungle or the creature is the lead," RGV adds. Next on the cards is RANN, with Amitabh Bachchan, releasing shortly after AGYAAT and the two part RAKTA CHARITRA, which goes on floors soon. RANN contains the controversial 'altered version' of the national anthem that has been submitted to the court for a nod. As for RAKTA CHARITRA, why has RGV opted for a character that most in North India haven't heard of and what if the first part doesn't do well [the film will be made in two parts]? "That's a risk I have to take. Also, his life [Paritala Ravi] could not be described in just two hours, so I needed to make the second part," justifies RGV.

DQ Entertainment announces animation TV series on Lassie

Lassie Hyderabad based DQ Entertainment has announced the co-development of a multi-million Euro proposed animated TV series based on the legendary dog, Lassie. The animation, gaming and entertainment production and distribution group is partnering with Classic Media, Inc. - the owner of the Lassie brand and DQE's affiliate in France and Ireland, M6 from France and ZDF from Germany. Lassie, a brave and loyal collie dog, first appeared in Eric Knight's 1940 novel, Lassie Come-Home. She was so well received that, in 1943, MGM Studios debuted the canine heroine in her first silver-screen appearance alongside Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor, followed by 10 more feature films in the 40's and 50's - the first eight of which grossed over $285 million. Alongside Peter O'Toole, Samantha Morton and Peter Dinklage, in 2005, Lassie lit up the big screen in a critically-acclaimed new feature film. In 1954, Lassie made her small-screen debut in an Emmy Award-winning television series that continued to air for 19 seasons - making it one of longest-running series in television history. In total, Lassie has appeared in 691 television episodes airing continuously in more than 100 countries. She has also been the title character in a popular radio show and in books that have been published in multiple languages. She even has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Today, Lassie promotes pet health with her own all-natural line of dog food and treats, Lassie Natural Way™, and she remains a popular brand for merchandising and consumer products. In August 2009, the United States Postal Service will unveil a classic "Lassie" postage stamp. Tapaas Chakravarti Chairman & CEO of DQ Entertainment Plc commented on behalf of DQ Entertainment group and its French & Irish affiliates, "Our association as production and distribution partners with Classic Media after the successful debut of hi-end CGI Casper's Scare School now gets into another long term artistically and commercially fruitful relationship with the co-development of heart-warming TV series in 3D animation."

Tusshar to play double role in a comedy; film also stars Minissha Lamba

Tusshar Kapoor After playing the mute guy successfully in Golmaal and Golmaal Returns, Tusshar Kapoor is all set to play a double role for the first time in his career. The film in question is a comedy and will be directed by Sagar Ballary (of Bheja Fry fame). Bollywood Hungama got in touch with Tusshar who seemed all excited at signing a new film after a while. "Yes it's been a while since I came across a script that was extremely interesting. This project with Sagar Ballary kicked off when the writer Alok Mathur spoke to me about it sometime in April. After the initial script reading sessions, I was very happy with the script and my character and gave a green signal. The project is special as I will be playing a double role (twins) for the first time in my career." The as-yet-untitled film will star 3 leading ladies out of which Minissha Lamba has been finalized while the search for the other 2 ladies continues. The film is produced by Smita Thackeray while the story, screenplay and dialogues have been written by Alok Mathur. Tusshar is gung-ho about working with Sagar Ballary, "I remember seeing Bheja Fry SDFS (Second Day First Show) and completely loved the film. Sagar is a bright, young director full of new and innovative ideas and I can't wait to start work with him." The film is set to go on floors on August 17 and will be shot mainly in Mumbai and Goa.

"Kangna is not the main lead of Kites" - Anurag Basu

Anurag Basu You heard this here first. The two versions of the much talked-about Kites in English and Hindi will basically be the same. Anurag refutes the report that the steamy scenes in the two versions will be different in Hindi and English. "We can't cheat Hindi audiences. The steamy scenes will be the same in both versions. The visuals will remain unchanged in both." Explains the director Anurag Basu, "There won't be anything radically different in the two versions because Hrithik and Barbara Mori speak English-Hindi and Spanish, respectively in both English and Hindi." Anurag plans to work with Barbara Mori again. "I've found a lifelong friend in Barbara. She became a known name in these parts after Kites But I've seen how she gets mobbed in Mexico and at film festivals. I remember when I met her for the first time in LA she was wearing oversized sunglasses. The minute she took them off she was mobbed. Actually, I had seen Barbara's films before I cast her." The other name short listed was Catalina Morino. "But contrary to rumours Penelope Cruz was never considered." Nothing that the talented Anurag Basu has directed for screen can equal his turbulent and shocking life story. And he is all set to put it on celluloid. "I've lots to say about my life. So far I've been telling stories about other people's lives. Maybe now it's my own turn. There's so much about my life to be told. Because of my doctors I've recovered from my potentially fatal illness. After what I've gone through things like publicity limelight and glamour seem so useless and vulgar. I've learnt to go beyond trivia." Anurag is somewhat taken aback by the undue importance being given to the Hrithik-Barbara friendship. "But I don't think Kites will suffer. All this hype will die down by the time the film will release around Diwali. As the time of release approaches the focus will shift to the film. I'm not getting impatient about my name not getting mentioned. When people will see the film, the focus will shift." Anurag Basu Recently back from Cannes, Anurag refutes rumours in Mumbai that Kites was lukewarmly received. "We showed them the incomplete version, without background music, special effects, etc. We showed them the working tape. And the reaction was good." Anurag falls quiet when asked about his protegee being sidelined from the marketing of Kites. "Kangna too has expressed displeasure about it. But see at the moment we want to project Kites as Barbara and Hrithik's love story. Kangna's portion will come in later. Let's get one thing clear. Kangna is not the main lead in Kites. She was keen to be part of the film. I wasn't that keen because her part was not that pivotal in Kites..." Adds Anurag, "Murder, Gangster and Life In A Metro were so carefully budgeted, it would've made money. Kites, is another ballgame. So far when I go abroad I am told Bollywood means Shekhar Kapoor, Mira Nair and Deepa Mehta. I'd like Kites to change that." He's already committed to make his next film for UTV. "I need to get to that immediately. I'm buying time from them."
