Check out: Amitabh Bachchan's bald look in Balki's Pa

Amitabh Bachchan With summer at its peak, everyone almost goes for a crew cut or maybe a completely tonsured look. But one visit to the sets of Pa has a totally different story to tell and see. Everyone's ground fell apart when realised that the fully tonsured man (which also included his eyebrows!) was none other than Amitabh Bachchan...yes...you heard it right...the Legendary Amitabh Bachchan. And this look of his is not in tune with the summer and its heat. Instead this is how he will look like in his forthcoming film Pa which stars him alongwith beta Abhishek and Vidya Balan. Pa is being directed by the ad whiz R. Balakrishnan (popularly known as 'Balki') and who had earlier directed the Big B-Tabu starrer Cheeni Kum. Even though every minute detail of this film is being kept under strict wraps, rumors have it that the film is about a child who ages much faster than any normal child would do. If you thought that the adjoining picture of Big B took the daylights out of you, then, let us tell you that the real surprise of the film lies in the fact that Amitabh Bachchan plays Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan's son in the film. News also has it that the shoot has been carried out swiftly in locations of Delhi, whereby, a team of highly qualified make up experts worked on Big B's look for a whopping 6 hours at a stretch! And the results are for everyone to see. Bollywood Hungama's repeated attempts to establish contact with Balki, the man of the moment, proved futile. All in all, this one surely seems to be one of Big B's highly anticipated films that everyone is going to look forward to this year.

Revisiting Classics: Chashme Buddoor

Watch Video It rarely happens that a directorial debut turns out to be a universally acknowledged classic. Laced with innovative comic sequences and a very familiar identifiable setting, writer-director Sai Paranjpe's Chashme Buddoor is a veritable treat that remains mint fresh even after almost three decades. Released in 1981, the film won Filmfare Nominations for 'Best Film' and 'Best Director' and is currently being remade by talented Onir. Bollywood Hungama looks back at reasons why this film has achieved the status of being a cult classic. Reasons, why we always feel like saying...Dil Chahta Hai There's simplicity about the plot and an unhurried pace that endears you from the first frame itself. The story idea about close bonding between perennially broke friends Siddharth (Farooq Sheikh), Omi (Rakesh Bedi) and Jai (Ravi Baswani) living in a small pad in Delhi was handled with a studied ease belying the fact that it was written-directed by a first timer. And, that too a lady! It seems out of the ordinary for she dealt with the habitual skirt chasing rogues (Jai and Omi) who along with bookworm Siddharth survived more on Lallan Miyan's (Saeed Jaffri) cigarettes than food. Somehow the director seems more of a man than the men in the film themselves. Some of the scenes are laugh-riot-funny. Let's try and recreate their flavor: a)  Omi after a failed attempt at impressing Neha (Deepti Naval) narrates a poetry-imbued-imaginary tale in a shayrana song mode to his friends. Even though the song (more of a Ghazal) flows smoothly, Rakesh Bedi's gesticulations as a traditional lover boy with flying kites and chirping birds keeps you in splits. b)  After being beaten black-n-purple by Neha's brother, Jai cooks up a story for the eager consumption of Omi and Siddharth of his big directorial exploits romancing Neha. The parody of Hindi film songs spanning various time zones ranging from 'Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya', 'Aap Jaisa Koi', 'Tumne Pukaara Aur Hum Chale Aaye', 'Chod Do Aanchal' etc. is really hilariously and very well executed. Chashme Buddoor c)  Miss 'Chamko' Neha floors Siddharth with her unpretentious charm as she gives a demo of the washing powder that she marketed. The radio jingles in Bobby melody 'Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Hon Aur Chaabi Kho Jaaye' and both the simpletons blush. Omi and Jai's Playboy walls created funny chuckles too. d)  Sitting in a park Neha and Siddharth wonder how do, hero-heroines in films find empty parks to sing romantic songs. Also, how do they come up with rhyming poetic words to express their undying love for each other! In an attempt to become 'filmi' the duo experiment with creating a sweet song of their own but end up getting laughed-at by an assortment of people in the park. e)  Jai recounts a scene to Omi from a film as to how the hero 'Pataos' the girl. The scene is actually done by Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. You just can't miss the real-life chemistry between the two even in a small scene. Of course Jai makes a fool of himself when he tries doing it himself emphasizing on the fact that the real life doesn't mirror a film's shelf life. f)  The reference to Hindi films has often been employed in the film. There's one instance when Siddharth and Neha have just ordered another round of Coffee and Tutti Fruti at their favourite restaurant and request the waiter to take his time in furnishing the order allowing them leisure time with each other. The know-all waiter replies tongue-in-cheek, "Main interval ke baad aata hoon" right at the stroke of actual interval of the film. Chashme Buddoor was a wonderful collusion of parallel and mainstream cinema showcasing that both can co-exist. It has been a reference point for innumerable films made on male bonding or life-after-college bonhomie. Raj Kamal's music was the talking point of the film too, especially Yesudas' Kahan Se Aaye Badra. So, who deserves the credit for this timeless classic? Chashme Buddoor Farooq Sheikh in an interview with Bollywood Hungama stated, "All the credit goes to Sai's script. When she completed the script, 80% of the merit of the film was already there, she just had to transfer it to celluloid. Sai also does a close watch on what the actor is doing or not doing. She understood the characters, the time period and the space because she has lived in that area for a long time." What about the unique brand of sophisticated humour that she used so dexterously in the film? "She has a sense of humour which is very accurate about middle class day to day problems. The moment you see, you feel I know about it, oh I've seen it, I identify with that, that's the special strength that Sai has," Farooq said. Somehow, cinema of today needs to lay more emphasis on refined writing while tackling humour. Something which is sorely missing! A film like Chashme Buddoor lasts because of the care-n-attention given to crafting each scene. You don't get to experience jerky, over smart camera movements. The secret lies in simple straight forward story telling. Here's hoping Sai Paranjpe takes up the directorial baton once again and entertain audience yet again. As for Chashme Buddoor, well, thanks for making it Ma'm! Write your review on Chashme Buddoor

Sanjay Suri talks about his 'gigolo' role in Anubhav

Sanjay Suri Courtesy the stand off between producers and multiplexes, yet another film is being revived from cold storage. Anubhav, which is directed by National Award winning director Rajiv Nath, is the latest to arrive sans any fanfare whatsoever as multiplexes screen this dramatic affair this Friday. With Sanjay Suri and Gul Panag in lead, Anubhav also stars Jackie Shroff, Raj Zutshi, Meeta Vasisht, Sudha Chandran and Shruti Seth in principal roles. Sanjay Suri spoke with us about the film. In Anubhav, you play the role of a man who is forced by circumstances to become a gigolo. Is it a dark film? No, I won't call it dark. The film has many layers and talks about how life is not completely black or white. I would call this more as a real film since it talks about a character that takes a certain stand in life, embarks on a journey and eventually looses his way. Please elaborate on the journey taken by this character. In the film, I play a theatre actor who wants to eventually make it big in Bollywood. His life goes for a spin after some unfortunate incidents and he ends up becoming a male prostitute. So while he has been a sensitive man, a true lover and a loyal friend all this while, he turns into a person that no one close to have would have ever imagined. If one looks at a one-line description of the movie i.e. a man becoming a gigolo, it sounds like Deepak Tijori's Oops. Is that a fair assumption to make? Well, if you only tell a story in one line then majority of all movies would be the 'same' love stories, all movies set in the past would be 'period' and each 'war' movie would be the 'same' too! But that's not always the case, right? So no, Anubhav has nothing to do with Oops! Coming from an award-winning director like Rajiv Nath, the film should have a sensibility of its own, right? Let me tell you one thing; the fact is that these South Indian guys are very sharp and cinema literate. In fact when I walk into the sets, it is sometimes so intimidating because someone comes and tells me that so and so person has won a National award winner, the other comes and points me to someone with two National awards and moments later there is this guy with three National awards walking in. So it's an elite bunch to be a part of!

Chunky fascinated with Abbas Mustan and Vishal Bhardwaj's cinema

Chunky Pandey Chunky Pandey is finally saying 'enough is enough'. Tired of being seen in comedies while waiting for a 'different' kind of a role coming his way, the man who has been a part of the industry for more than 20 years has taken a resolve that he would be applying breaks when it comes to working in comedy films. While he is happy working with Priyadarshan in De Dana Dan and Sajid Khan in Housefull, Chunky states that these (along with some of his yet-to-be-released films) would be the last of the films where he would be seen in a comic outing. Well, at least for the time being! "Honestly speaking, I am looking at a complete image changeover", declares Chunky who has worked in films across genres, whether it is action, comedy or a family social, but has always been known most for his comic timing. "Par yeh kab tak chalega", questions Chunky, "If I don't start experimenting at this stage of my career, then when would I? With such experience behind me, I see myself coming back in a different avatar. So many people out there are making serious films or to put it differently, films that are not necessarily comedies. I am capable of pulling off any kind of role. At the end of the day, it's the matter of them having faith in me because I certainly have faith in quite some a few filmmakers who are doing interesting stuff." So has he approached any filmmakers and suggested them to begin work on a film with him? "Yes, I have approached some of the filmmakers that I really respect and have asked them to cast me. My only request? No comedies please", informs Chunky, "What I want to work now is an Abbas-Mustan kind of thriller that has a lot of drama and thrills. A kind of film where a character gets an opportunity to change as a chameleon." He also has great things to say about Vishal Bhardwaj whose Kaminey is soon to be released. "I am also keen to work with Vishal Bhardwaj; his cinema is so different, so unique and gritty. These are some of the people who are so capable of making each and every character in their films stand out. I am fascinated by their cinema", appreciates Chunky. Some of the upcoming films (all of them being comedies) of Chunky are Paying Guests, Shortkut - The Con Is On, Khallballi - Fun Unlimited, Hello Darling and Daddy Cool, all of which are expected to release later this year.

John Abraham steps out of Karan Johar's Stepmom remake

John Abraham John reluctantly but firmly said no to Karan's offer to play the male lead in the desi version of Chris Columbus's Stepmom. Karan had given John a big break in Kaal a few years ago. And nobody can deny the recent Dharma dhamaka Dostana was a turning-point for John's career. After Saif, then John was approached to play the lead opposite Kajol and Kareena Kapoor in the desi version of Stepmom. John almost agreed then opted out. Reason? He didn't see himself doing much in a film that already started two powerhouse actresses, both natural-born scene stealers. Says a source, "Karan had almost convinced John to do the role. He even promised that the husband's role in the Indian Stepmom would be far more substantial than what Ed Harris did in the original. But John is at a stage in his career where he wants to make all the right career moves. He feels, as an outsider in the industry, he has made a place that must be respected," says a source close to John. "John is finally learning to say no to projects even if they come from big banners and if he isn't convinced that he'd get proper performing space. In Dostana, he went along with the salespitch that Abhishek was the 'actor' while John was the 'body'. But in Dostana 2, John will make sure he will be the actor and the body. He's working hard on it." The latest on Stepmom is that it's yet to be acquired for remake by Dharma Productions. Says Karan Johar, "The modalities for that are still being worked out. Until the contract is signed I wouldn't want to comment on it. Stepmom was released in the same year as my directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and I loved it. I look forward to developing it if the modalities are worked out. You of course know Kajol and Kareena Kapoor are expected to play the two roles." In the meanwhile, the other Karan favourite Arjun Rampal who did a walk-on part in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has agreed to step into Stepmom, if and when it gets made.

Strike Update: Focus shifts to Thursday!

This one deserves to be included in Ripley's 'Believe it or not'... From Monday to Tuesday to Wednesday to now Thursday [today], the crucial meeting between the two warring factions [producers/distributors versus multiplexes] is getting stretched like a rubber band. The meeting was supposed to take place on Monday; it got shifted to Tuesday. Then Wednesday. Now Thursday evening is what everyone's looking at. According to trustworthy sources, the two sides have agreed on certain terms and are supposed to meet to put an official seal to the entire issue. Reportedly, the revenue sharing terms have been agreed upon and also the distribution strategy, but till the two sides sign on the dotted line, it can't be considered official. With rumours flying thick and fast, with various versions of stalemate doing the rounds of the industry, an official statement from the leaders [at least to trade magazines] would put the rumours to rest.

KKD -World Cup - Biwi No. 1: History repeats itself after a decade

Click above for more movie stills Exactly 10 years after the release of Biwi No. 1, history is repeating itself with Kal Kissne Dekha being confirmed for 12th June release. Call it sheer coincidence but there are three common factors between these two films: a) Both are produced by Vashu Bhagnani, b) Both are releasing by the end of summer (Biwi No. 1 had arrived on 28th May, 1999), c) Both are arriving in the middle of Cricket World Cup (For Biwi No. 1, it was one day internationals, for Kal Kissne Dekha, it is 20:20 cricket). "Make it four common factors", corrects Vashu Bhagnani who has now applied fifth gear for the promotion of his son's launch pad, "For the release of Biwi No. 1, I was discouraged to bring it on theaters when cricket was at its peak. Same is the case with Kal Kissne Dekha too where people are surprised that I am releasing the film when ICC 20:20 is catching up heat. I went by my instincts then; I am going by my instincts now." But why the risk? Since he has anyways waited for last few weeks, would a couple of weeks more make a difference? Why bring the film when audience may prefer watching cricket? "Clichéd as it may sound, but movies and cricket have always been a religion in India", smiles Vashu, "Audiences have seen non-stop cricket for last two months but have missed out on movies during the period gone by. I know for sure that many out there are dying to watch a quality film once the strike breaks and what better way to celebrate movies making a comeback than do so with Kal Kissne Dekha. Of course, there is cricket but movies will always stay on, especially so when it's a quality product in the offering." Going down the memory lane, Vashu gets nostalgic here, "I remember how the entire world was against me when I had decided to bring on Biwi No. 1 in the middle of the Cricket World Cup. In spite of huge names like Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Tabu and David Dhawan, my well wishers suggested me to hold on to my film's release." Talking about his confidence, when it comes to pitching a film rightly in the market, Vashu says, "I knew even then that in spite of cricket being available on TV, the big screen will never lose its charm if a film which releases there has been promoted and marketed well. That's what I have ensured for Kal Kissne Dekha as well. I have gone out and placed Jackky in front of the audience to be tested. Now all that is required is for people to see for themselves what he and Vaishali Desai have to offer to them." Going by the adage of Kal Kissne Dekha being true to his own real life story, Vashu goes on to conclude in a bemused tone, "In 1999, when I released Biwi No. 1, I would never have dreamt that exactly 10 years later there would be another World Cup and I would be launching my own son amidst all the brouhaha that we all have been witness to during last couple of months. It only makes me further say that 'aakhir kal kisne dekha'! Really, you can't even imagine that such things can be planned; they just happen.

"I wanted to marry K.L. Saigal" - Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar Lata Mangeshkar, the Nightingale of our Indian Film Industry is loved by one and all for her melodious voice ever since she started singing. But do you know the name of the singer she fell in love with in her childhood days? Do you know the person whom she fancied? And did you know with whom she wanted to tie the nuptial knot? After digging a lot, our sources from London sourced out some exclusive information about Lata Mangeshkar's loveable musical journey. An insight which very few till today have known. Let's then take it from the top, shall we? The Mangeshkar family will always be remembered for their undying and invaluable contribution to the world of music. Back in the early 1930's, the family of singers too had their own idol, singer K.L. Saigal. His songs were very popular in the Mangeshkar household. What's more, in times of conservative India back then, they were only allowed to sing songs sung by Saigal. So with no other singer's voice heard in the entire household, Lata Mangeshkar started to weave her dreams of getting married to K.L.Saigal in her early childhood days. The nightingale quotes, "As far as I can remember, I always wanted to meet K.L.Saigal. As a child, I used to say that 'I will get married to him after I grow up' and that's when my father explained to me that when I'll be big enough to get married, Saigal saab will be too old enough to get married." Having said that, it'll be quite a shock for you to know that after having sung more than sixty thousand songs in her career, Lataji was never able to meet up with her dream man. In her own words, she says, "I will always regret not to have met K.L.Saigal, the man of my dreams. But yes, with the help of his brother Mahendra Saigal, I did get a chance to meet his wife Ashaji and his children who gifted me K.L.Saigal saab's ring." Mangeshkar family was never supportive of film songs back then. It was only Lataji and her father, whom she calls 'baba', used to listen to the songs sung by K.L.Saigal. Lataji recalls, "Baba used to love Saigal saab's songs. Even I used to sing his songs. I remember singing 'Ek Bangla Bane Nyaara'. I was the only member of my family who was allowed to sing Saigal saab's songs." Speaking about reservations and how strict her father was, Lataji says, "My father was very conservative types and never allowed us to apply any powder or make up when we wanted to go out to see a play. He was also very strict about the type of clothes we wanted to wear. He didn't allow us to watch any Hindi films because he himself didn't like them. We were only given the permission to go and watch Bhalji Pendharkar's Marathi films." Strange isn't it? With so many restrictions in the family, if we throw light on Lata Mangeshkar's life and career, you'll be surprised to know that her first claim to fame was the 1949 Hindi film Mahal in which she sung the chart buster song 'Aayega Aanewala...aayega....aayega'.

You are the controller: Microsoft Xbox's Project Natal

Project Natal Microsoft has unveiled and demonstrated Project Natal, under which it is developing technology that facilitates controller-less gaming on its Xbox 360 platform. In what seems to be its answer to Nintendo's motion controller, Microsoft has done away with the controller itself, making the gamer the controller. The sensor combines an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone and custom processor running proprietary software all in one device and tracks the player's full body movement in 3D, while responding to commands, directions and even a shift of emotion in voice, the company claims. In addition, the sensor is not light-dependent. It can recognize you just by looking at your face, and it doesn't just react to key words but understands what you're saying. Call a play in a football game, and players will actually respond. "The next step in interactive entertainment is to make the controller disappear," said Steven Spielberg, Hollywood director and producer. "With Project Natal, we'll see games that bring everyone together through technology that actually recognizes us." What's cool is that you can control the game menu and interface with swipes of your hand. The company also premiered 10 exclusive new games and Facebook Connect using which one would be able to access the social networking website from the Xbox Live platform.

Slumdog kids invited for grand tea party in The House of Commons, London

Oscar and Bafta Award winning film Slumdog Millionaire seems like going a step further in recognising its star cast to the world audience. Be surprised because it's not Dev Patel and Freida Pinto. Slumdog Millionaire's Azharuddin Mohammed and Rubina Ali have received a special invite from Britain's MP Keith Vaz to attend a grand tea party to be held at the House of Commons in Westminster later this month. Keith Vaz wanted to invite both the kids in the month of April but due for reasons unknown, it didn't work out. Now he has made sure that there are no further delays. Both the kid's family accepted the invitation sent by Vaz and are now ready to leave for London in the near future to attend the grand tea party. Though the date of the party is still to be decided, Vaz wished that both Azharuddin and Rubina meet the UK media and their well wishers who've praised their performances in the multiple award winning film. Speaking exclusively from London with UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent, Keith said, "Both the kids have left a lasting impression on the people of UK to such an extent that they are now interested in knowing about the personal lives of the kids after what was badly written about them in the Indian and world press. I haven't yet decided the date when the party will be held but it sure is going to happen in the near future." Well, these kids deserve much more than just slums. Way to go kids!
