Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to perform at IIFA 2009

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Download image as wallpaper You read this on Bollywood Hungama first. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be dancing at the 10th IIFA awards to be held in Macau from June 11. Sonam Kapoor is all set to make her stage debut at IIFA this year. Kareena Kapoor too has been confirmed to perform. The show will be hosted by Riteish Deshmukh, Lara Dutta and Boman Irani. But one of the highlights each year, the movie premiere, has been done away with. Explains IIFA director Sabbas Joseph, "It can't be helped. The movie premiere had to be cancelled this year because of the ongoing strike of new releases in Bollywood. Two big films were ready to be premiered at IIFA this year. I shall refrain from mentioning their names. But the imbroglio did away with the premiere." As a substitute IIFA this year has the world-famous Cirque de Soleil performing for the audience. "We believe audiences won't get a chance to miss the world premiere once they see the Cirque de Soleil performing." Why Macau? Says Sabbas, "Because we feel it's the Las Vegas of the East. In this the tenth year of IIFA's existence, we wanted either the US or China to be our venue. We chose China because we feel it could be a gateway for Bollywood to the China. We also hope to end the deadlock between India and China over the exchange of cinema. We haven't come away from one venue without opening up doors for Bollywood. We're confident this would be the case in China."

Musically Yours: Shilpa Rao

Shilpa Rao "When people meet me, they cannot relate that I am the voice behind songs like 'Woh Ajnabee' and 'Khuda Jaane'", said the incredibly talented Shilpa Rao when we met her for a rendezvous at her cosy Andheri apartment. She may not be a known face but there is no denying the fact that Shilpa is a name to reckon with among the current crop of singers in Bollywood today. In this edition of Musically Yours, we profile the Simple- Humble- Intelligent- Loving- Passionate and Artistic Shilpa Rao who shares her journey from the small town of Jamshedpur to the glamour of the filmy world in Mumbai. Claim to Fame "The song that is really close to my heart is 'Tose Naina Lage' (Anwar) but I guess the popularity which 'Khuda Jaane' (Bachna Ae Haseeno) gave me was way beyond expectations." Family Background "I am originally from Jamshedpur. My parents still live there. My dad is working with Tata Motors at a senior level. As far as music is concerned, it always had a special place in my life and my family. My dad has done his M.A. in Music but he could never pursue it as a full-fledged career as he had to support his family. Moreover, making a career in music was not considered such a wise option during those days. However, when I was small, I loved listening to music and my training in music began from a very early age. In fact, I didn't even realize it that I was being trained for music by my dad. After finishing school, I came to Mumbai in 1997 and joined Xaviers College for my B.Sc in Statistics. I also went on to do my post-graduation in Statistics. During that time, I met Hariharan who heard me sing once and felt that I should further nurture my talent. I never really thought of myself as a great singer but when someone of the stature of Hariharan sir said good things about me, it kind of hit me that I should take up music more seriously. Harirharan introduced me to his guru Ghulam Mustafa Khan saab. It was only then that I started learning and practicing singing seriously." The Early Days "In 2001, while singing at a competition, Shankar Mahadevan one of the judges took notice of me. He was impressed with my voice and asked me to sing in his shows. Later on I also did quite a few jingles with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. That experience helped me a lot. I also developed a lot of contacts and met composers like Vishal-Shekhar and Rajat Dholakia during my jingle days." First 'Big' break "As luck would have it, my first big break came with a song composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy- 'Saiyaan Re' from Salaam-e-Ishq. I had already known Shankar well by that time and one fine day, he asked me to come and record a scratch. Nikhil Advani, Sameerji were all very happy with what they heard and the rest as they say is history." The Hits that followed.... "Luckily for me, my first song 'Saiyaan Re' went on to become very popular in spite of the film not doing too well. After that, my next song was 'Tose Naina Lage' for Anwar. This was a completely opposite song as compared to 'Saiyaan Re'. Mithoon (the composer) and I were working on a song which didn't materialize. He then called me to record the scratch of 'Tose Naina lage'. And this time too it worked well with the director Manish Jha and I was on. The song is among one of my favorites and I am happy that in spite of it being a slow, soothing number, it found so much acceptance among the listening audience. Post that, I sung some really good songs like 'Woh Ajnabee' (The Train), 'Ek Lau' (Aamir) etc..." 'Khuda Jaane' - The 'Big' Turning Point I had known Vishal-Shekhar for almost 4 years and had even done a lot of ad work with them. They were also looking to give me that one song which would suit my style and voice. One fine day, I got a call from them asking me to come to the studio to listen to a song. I heard the tune and immediately freaked out as it was a beautiful romantic song, something which I had never sung before. They asked me to just go into the recording room and try it out. I gave it a shot and Siddharth Anand (the director) felt that the voice was really apt. That really built my confidence. The song went onto become such a huge hit and won us 3 awards at the Screen awards (Best Male Playback- KK, Best Lyrics- Anvita Dutt Gupta and Best Female Playback). I truly had a blast working with Vishal- Shekhar, K.K., Anvita and Siddharth on this number." Shilpa Rao Music I love listening to.... "I listen to any and every kind of music. As a kid, I grew up listening to a lot of Ghazals. My dad was a big Mehndi Hassan fan so I heard a lot of that. I also heard a lot of classical music be it Aamir Khan saab or Prabha Atre. My dad had this habit of putting on music early in the morning, so the first thing hat I heard in the morning was music. During high school, like any other youngster, even I was hooked onto Dire Straits and Deep Purple etc. When I was in college, I listened to a lot of instrumental music, jazz and blues. So you can say that I have always been open to any genre of music. In fact I just stand in front of my CD collection and pick up a CD depending on my mood at that point of time." What's playing on my iPod? "These days I am listening to Cassandra Wilson. I am hooked onto that at the moment." Role Models "Well...it has to be Hariharan hands down. I simply admire his style of singing, his vocal range, his diction and everything about his singing. He is just perfect." Favorite Contemporary Singers "There are a lot of great singers that I admire. I truly love and adore Rekha Bharadwaj, Shruti Pathak etc. Dominique is another wonderful singer who has been here for so long, she is like this Jingle Diva. I am happy she has finally got her due with the Rock On number ('Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein'). Among the male singers, I really look upto KK, Mohit Chauhan and even this new singer Tochii (who has sung the song 'Pardesi' in Dev D)" I wish I had sung... "'Zara Zara' from Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein. That's such a fantastic song; a brilliant composition by Harris Jeyaraj and Bombay Jayshree's vocals took the song to another level." The actress I wish I could sing for… "I don't know how it will sound but I would love to sing for Tabu. I am a huge fan of her work right from Maachis to Cheeni Kum. In fact, I met her at a party and even told her 'I would love to sing for you someday'. She smiled and said 'Sure'." My Future Projects "I have just recorded a song for UTV's film Aage Se Right starring Shreyas Talpade, Kay Kay Menon and Mahie Gill. It has music by this new guy called Amartya and he has done a fantastic job. You can also hear me in YRF's Shahid-Rani starrer Hadippa. I've sung the promotional track with Mika and it is a really racy, peppy, high energy number. I have also sung a song in Onir's film Kill Chhabra which has music by another new composer Gaurav Dayal."

Music maestro Madan Mohan's unreleased songs to be released as an album

Madan Mohan It's not often that a creator's unsung work gets a chance to be noticed decades after his demise. Luckily for us, the great musical genius Madan Mohan was never 'unsung'. His muse and primary vocalist Lata Mangeshkar ensured an infinite status for the gems of Madan Mohan. And the ones that got left behind due to the tyranny of budget and the vagaries of production are now going to be put together by his son, 34 years after Madan Mohan passed away prematurely at the age of 51 leaving behind a treasury of released and unreleased songs. Madan Mohan's son, Sanjeev Kohli, former CEO of Yash Raj Films is all set to release some of Madan Mohan's unreleased songs in an album entitled 'Tere Bagair'. Says Sanjeev, "My father would be creating and humming new tunes all the time His music sittings with Lataji were endless. As a child, I'd often wonder how my father managed to create so many tunes in so little time. To my delight I discovered hundreds of unreleased tunes in our cupboard. That's how 'Tere Bagair' was born." The 15 tracks that comprise the album are sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Talat Mahmood and Kishore Kumar and were recorded between 1964 and 1972. To erase all signs of antiquity, Sanjeev has added supportive music and digitally mastered sound to the original tunes. 'Tere Bagair' releases on June 25 on the occasion of Madan Mohan's 85th death anniversary.

Meet Nana Patekar's daughter in Krantiveer - The Revolution

Jahan Bloch Mehul Kumar's daughter, Jahan Bloch, is all set to scorch the silver screen with her debut film Krantiveer - The Revolution Launch Vehicle I am debuting with my father Mehul Kumar's film - Krantiveer The Revolution. I play Nana Patekar's and Dimple Kapadia's daughter in the film. My role of a TV reporter requires me to be fierce and strong so it is quite a challenging role. The film is about the youth providing the impetus for a revolution in our country. Casting Coup Everybody knew I wanted to be an actor so it wasn't a surprise when my father thought of casting me. When he decided to make a sequel to Krantiveer, he asked me if I would be interested in doing it. Without batting an eyelid, I agreed. It is not a romantic character but it will surely give me a chance to showcase my acting abilities. Stepping-Stone I am quite well-versed with the process of filmmaking as I have been on the sets with my dad. I have a fair idea of how things work, so that way I have received hands-on training from my father. Besides, I have also acted as a child artiste in my father's film. I played Amitabh Bachchan's daughter in Kohraam. In fact, I even had a role Krantiveer. First Shot I am not camera conscious, so it was relatively easier for me when I gave my first shot. My first shot was at the police station wherein I drag a guy to the station for eve-teasing. Stumbling Block I guess my family background helped me get my first film. But being from a film family has its downside too. Being a director's daughter, a lot of people's expectations are riding on me, so I will have to live up to it. The hurdles will begin once the film releases and people assess my performance. Lessons Learnt I am still young and I have a lot to learn. But there are no shortcuts to success, you have to work hard and put in your best. It is a completely different world when you are in front of the camera. Matinee Idol I have always idolised Madhuri Dixit Nene. She is brilliant on screen and I would love to do Chandramukhi's role in Devdas. I also look up to my father. It's an honour to be working in his film. Future Projects Right now I am busy with Krantiveer ... and I hope it really works. Let's see what is in store for me! Screen India

Raghav Sachar launches his music label

Raghav Sachar Raghav Sachar is out with his maiden single that also marks the launch of his music label. Charming luttera is his maiden attempt at a single, a rarity on the Indian music scene, says Raghav Sachar, who is best known for playing 32 instruments (and growing!), composing and singing for Yash Raj Films' Kabul Express and Eros International's One Two Three, What is the song all about? "Well, honestly, I made the track for one of my forthcoming films. But since I had produced the track and it was a very interesting concept, I decided to make it my first single as I was long planning to launch my own music label, Raghav Sachar Music," says the multi-faceted artiste. "That has been my dream for a very long while." Describing it as "commercial but classy" with very good lyrics by his buddy and consistent professional associate, lyricist Aditya Dhar, Raghav reveals that he has also acted in the video. "For the first time I have danced in my music video, which also shows my character playing poker. It's a world music number. The video is directed by Harshal and Vitthal." In keeping with market trends, Raghav says that he saw no point in coming out with a physical single or CD and has opted for a soft (digital) release. "But my marketing treatment is the same as if it was a CD release, with a music video, promotions on radio and so on." Raghav wants to "just popularise the song" and allow free downloads ("which is very practical as no one pays to download because so many sites for free downloads in India,") but will generate revenues from digital websites, caller-back tunes and ring-tones. "Maybe I will start charging nominal rates later," he says. The musician is also doing well on the film front. He is scoring music for Indra Kumar's Daddy Cool, a comedy that stars Suniel Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani and others and also for Vikram Bhatt's Phirr. "I also feature in one song," says Raghav. He is also making his debut as a lead actor in Kabir Sadanand's Tum Milo To Sahi opposite Anjana Sukhani. Nana Patekar, Dimple Kapadia, Suniel Shetty and Vidya Malavade co-star. "There are two songs filmed on me and I have composed both. The remaining songs are composed by Sandesh Shandilya." Screen India

Is Adhyayan Suman -Shahana Goswami link up a publicity stunt for Jashn?

Adhyayan Suman Click above for more movie stills Stories about the breakup with Kangna Ranaut have Adhyayan Suman going red with anger and indignation. Some suggest it's all a publicity gimmick to support the Bhatts' on-release film Jashn which stars Adhyayan and Shahana. But Mahesh Bhatt scoffs at the very idea. "I find the idea that Vishesh Films started the rumours amusing. Because the move would be counter-productive to our film. Adhyayan and Shahana play brother and sister in Jashn. And since the film is not about incest, how would the link-up help our film?" Fumes Adhyayan, "These rumours seem to be centered on Jashn. Earlier I was linked with Anjana Sukhani and now Shahana who's a pal. I don't know whose idea of good publicity for Jashn this is. But it's disgusting. Shahana is a pal. There's nothing more to our friendship. I've a girlfriend. Kangna is very beautiful in her heart, and physically. I am not the kind of guy who has affairs on the side." So where do these rumours come from? "Search me!" shrugs Adhyayan. "I'd never blame the Bhatts. Mahesh Bhatt saab is like a father. He has taught me so much." But the young actor does find it strange that rumours regarding Kangna and him floated during the release of the Bhatts' Raaz 2 earlier, and now when Jashn is around the corner. He also admits it's true that Shahana was 'banned' by the co-directors Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala from the sets of Jashn although she plays a pivotal part in the film. Says Adhyayan, "I protested on her behalf. You can't do this to her when she's the film's female lead. Bhatt Saab had to intervene to allow Shahana to come on the sets as and when she liked."

Karisma and Kareena Kapoor on Salman Khan's '10 Ka Dum'

Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor What's common to the tracks 'Oonchi Hai Building Lift Teri Bandh Hai...' (from the film Judwaa) and 'Kyon Ki Itna Pyaar Tumse Kartein Hai Hum' (from the film Kyon Ki)? Well, its not rocket science to figure out that, both the songs, which were picturised on Karisma and Kareena respectively, had the one and only Salman Khan in the lead! And the hunky-dory Salman Khan is all set to be back with a bang, on the TV show that catapulted him straight into every Indian household and also sent the TRPs of Sony Entertainment Television shooting sky high. Yes, we are indeed talking about the superhit game show '10 Ka Dum'. Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor After the successful first season of the show, Sallu just recently shot for the first episode of the second season which is all set to go on air this week. And who could have been more apt than the powerful Kapoor sisters: Karisma and Kareena, to be Sallu's first celebrity contestants! For those (lucky few) who have had a chance to get a glimpse of the shoot, they just couldn't stop raving about the camaraderie between the two sisters, who are known to be diversely different personalities. For starters, Karisma is the conservative and shy, and is a direct contrast with the honest and outspoken Kareena. So much so that, Salman even commented that, "If Karisma was not an actress she would have been a nun!" Well, this was just a glimpse of the first episode. You can witness more the fireworks in live action as the trio of Salman, Karisma and Kareena come together only on '10 Ka Dum' on Saturday May 30, at 9.00 pm IST, only on Sony Entertainment Television. Go for it, guys.
