"2D animation is evergreen" - Ram Mohan

Ram Mohan CGTexpo, Mumbai: Is evergreen style of classical two dimensional (2D) animation being over-shadowed by the emergence of the modern three dimensional (3D) image? "No doubt 3D technology is coming up but classical is yet not obsolete. Most of the landmark movies made in the history of animation were in 2D and if not, they had certain principles of animation which are applicable to all the mediums of animation," says Ram Mohan, father of Indian animation and Chairman of Graphiti School of Animation. With decades of experience behind him, Ram Mohan believes that the classical form of animation is still alive and will remain relevant in the years to come. No matter what the technology, 2D will complement it and aid the creative process. "Today's young generation considers that every thing can be done through the digital medium. The digital medium is just a tool but rest relies on one's own creativity," says the animation stalwart. Showcasing clips from some of the best national and international animation films, Ram Mohan traced the development of animation and explained how it was intertwined with the technology used, making landmarks in the process. Using a clip from The Simpsons movie, Ram Mohan demonstrated how one can create a character which is simple, but at the same time appealing. "One of the most necessary components is 'great characters' - the most unforgettable ones you ever met," he said referring to the Simpsons. The other important details that made a movie a landmark, he said, were a narrative that hooks the viewer within the first 10 seconds, compelling and evocative designs that bring about a total suspension of disbelief, technical excellence which blends the real and the virtual seamlessly, the knack of picking the right tools for the right job, an awareness of the history of cinema and of animation - in terms of period, genre and style. He finally asked aspiring filmmakers and students to make a personal statement in which every single frame is work of art and warned against techno jingoism.

Down the memory lane with Kimmy Katkar

Kimmy Katkar Once sex symbol, now glam-mom. In her first interview in years, Kimmy Katkar opens up on her gritty fight for her son's life and life after Bollywood For starters, she was never Kimi. "It's Kimmy Katkar. Someone spelt it wrong and it stuck. I hated it," says Katkar. She of the arched eyebrows and long legs, desi Jane to an eminently forgettable Tarzan, Jumma to a lusting Amitabh Bachchan in Hum, has just welcomed me to her home with a cool glass of iced tea. Google her and the search throws up a collection of Tarzan and Hum tidbits and a few video clips on YouTube. There is a fan asking: 'Where is Kimi Katkar?' Where indeed? "But were people looking for that answer? I don't think so!" Katkar says candidly, as she sits across me, clad in blue jeans and a white shirt at her apartment in Pune, the city that has been home for the past three years. The sex bomb of the Eighties is now 47 and mother to a 16-year-old. She has put on a few kilos and remains a striking woman. But she seems to have happily shed the starry life. So, she shows me the exquisite embroidery she does, chats about the pastas she makes for her son's dabba or the bonsais she's trying hard to nurture and, most of all, takes me through the pages of her life through the exhaustive scrapbook she has put together of her family. It takes prodding to get her talking of her film career. "I think I left at the right time. What more could I have done after acting opposite Amit (Amitabh) in Hum? I had been modelling since I was 17. After 10-11 years of continuous work. I knew I needed to settle down," she says. Katkar made her debut in Tarzan in 1985. While the film flopped, it got her recognition. A cache of minor and major films followed ("I have worked with every hero of my time'') till beau Shantanu Sheorey popped the question and Katkar waltzed out of Bollywood, without so much as a backward glance. "Everyone was aghast. After Hum, I had been inundated with offers of films with Amit. But I had closed the chapter when I said yes to Shantanu. In fact I had to return a whole lot of signing amounts," she says. If Katkar oozes calm, not oomph, it's an assurance that comes of having gone through the churning of time. Katkar, you could say, has been put through the wringer. It's a story that she has been cajoled to share for the first time in all these years. Eight years ago, she packed her bags and moved from Mumbai to Melbourne. Her son Siddhanth, then nine, was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness (she requests us not to go into details because she doesn't want Siddhanth, now a strapping teenager, to be labelled by the past). When their doctor in Mumbai advised them to take him out of India to give him a better chance at life, they left for Australia, where Shantanu's brother is a doctor. "Even today when I think of that phase of my life, I shudder," she says. "You always think that these things happen only to other people and not to you," she says. Kimmy Katkar Katkar flew out of the country with just two pairs of jeans, expecting to be back in a few weeks. From an initial estimate of two months, the stay extended to five years. It was also the period that Katkar says changed her forever. "Shantanu was there but he had to shuttle between Mumbai and Melbourne. For long stretches it was just Siddhanth and I. Siddhanth started school there, along with his treatment, and we embarked on a whole new phase of life," she says. Five years on, though the couple started to feel that it's time to move back. "Though Melbourne was beautiful, I felt I was losing my mind. Sid was also getting older and I felt he needed Shantanu to be around more," says Katkar. She was certain, though, that she did not want to be in Mumbai. She felt they needed to go to a quieter, smaller city to re-establish themselves as a family. "I came back and immediately my friends rallied around us and helped us settle in beautifully," says Katkar, who finally found the peace of mind that had been rudely snatched from her. Does she never really miss the glamour? "I miss the money I think. But that's about it. And perhaps the designer clothes and facilities today's girls have. We would look at a dress in a magazine and ask the tailor to make it," she says. Katkar though believes actors in her time had a more distinctive look. "All the girls today tend to look the same. We may have had very limited choices for make-up, but I think we all had our individual looks," says Katkar. The full-time mother is not in touch with anyone from the industry-though old colleagues like Jackie Shroff and Poonam Dhillon remember her as the actor who was surprisingly "just a normal girl" on sets. She doesn't even watch any of her movies. "I think that phase is over and done with. I have a movie lying around, Khoon ka Karz, that the maids have been asking me to put on but I would much rather not. Once in a while, a channel airs a movie of mine and going to the market becomes a problem-that's about it." So no comeback plans? "Unless there is a great role. But who is going to give me that? Then again, nowadays people are more into realistic cinema where the likes of us can fit in. I would love to work opposite Boman Irani. I think he's hugely talented. And I think the Amitabh of Cheeni Kum and Nishabd is so much better than the one in my time. Had he been like this, I wouldn't have left the industry!" she says with a laugh. Kimmy Katkar Despite her distance, she remains a Bollywood fan. "It's a fantastic place. I think for those who run it down it's a just a case of sour grapes," she says. And what about her sex symbol image? "I loved it. It just meant I was so hot," she says. While in the industry, Katkar had her share of gossip and link-ups. "As long as I was not hurting anyone, not breaking anyone's home, I couldn't care less what people said or talked. I was only answerable to my mother and she always knew what was happening in my life. Of course I had relationships but I never lived two lives," she says. Her last brush with fame came some years ago-when she was mentioned in Gregory David Roberts' Shantaram. Katkar was in Australia then, far away from her past. A friend in Australia, who knew Katkar was an actress-"but secretly doubted it", says the actor- read the book and called her up. "She demanded to know why I hadn't told her that I knew him. It seems Roberts had dropped in on the sets in Mumbai and while my co-star Chunky Pandey was as usual strutting about like a star, I was chatting up everyone on the sets. Shataram noticed that and wrote about me later on in the book. Just goes to show one should be good to everyone in life-never know who will remember it kindly one day!" she says. That they do, Kimmy. That they still do.

"Game development is not a piece of cake" - Ninad Chhaya

Ninad Chhaya CGTexpo, Mumbai: "There is much to gaming beyond game testing," says Ninad Chhaya, Executive Vice President of Jump Games, Reliance ADAG's mobile and online gaming arm. He was addressing an eager audience of wannabe game developers at the first NASSCOM Game Development seminar held in conjunction with the CGTexpo on 23 -24 May. In today's age, almost every day-to-day entertainment device is gaming enabled. From the good old personal computer to third generation gaming consoles, mobiles, PDAs, hand-held gizmos and TV set top boxes - they all come retrofitted with gaming intelligence. And the insatiable gamer demands even more cutting edge games, making way for a multi-billion dollar gaming industry. Pegged as the next gaming destination, India is currently taking baby steps in the game development sector with a few well established studios and startups doing major jobs for their western counterparts. However, making a game is a slow, multi-stage and expensive process as Ninad indicates. "A good PC game takes anywhere between 36-48 months to make," he said, "And before that it has to go through the three stages of pre-production, production and post-production, each involving multiple processes in themselves." Ergo making games is serious business. Ninad further elaborated with the example of pre-production, where an idea has to pass through the stages of conceptualization, game design document, storyboarding, art guide, prototyping before it can be pitched to the sales team. "Game development is a collaborative process between the art, programming and sales team. At the end of the day the game needs to meet market conditions and ship out on time." There are several times when the game is taken back to the drawing board. "Quality assurance (QA) is one of the most important aspects. Right from debugging to game balancing, the quality of the game play has to be maintained," Ninad said. Here the game testers come in playing the game ad nauseam and looking for loopholes in the game play and graphics. Once the game is finalized and the 'gold master' is ready; the rest is left to the promotions team. Speaking from his decade long experience in the gaming industry, Ninad exclaimed, "Gaming is not easy or simple. But if you have the passion, you will enjoy it like I have."

Jimmy Sheirgill - An overseas super star now?

Download MUKD wallpapers Dr. Manmohan Singh is all set to continue his winning streak in the arena of politics, considering the poll results which are out in open. On the other hand, up North, another Manmohan Singh is also continuing his winning streak in the arena of film making. Cinematographer turned director Manmohan Singh has made quite a few Punjabi films in the past and each of them has been successful at the box office. Ditto for Jimmy Sheirgill who recently delivered a Punjabi superhit in Tera Mera Ki Rishta. Now add one more in the list, Munde U.K De, which has done very good business in its two week run at the box office. Informs a trade follower, "In spite of rising mercury, IPL extravaganza and political maha kumbh, Manmohan Singh's romantic comedy Munde U.K. De has struck gold at the box office by raking in Rs 10 million in the opening week. It has been super strong even in it's second week while third weekend has opened well too. This makes it the most successful opening for the maverick director." Presented by Kamal Mukut as a Mukutwalas & Punj-aab Movies International presentation, Munde U.K. De is a story of two guys [Jimmy Sheirgill, Gurpreet Guggi] who are born in U.K. and come to Punjab (India) for the first time. "Aamir Khan has taken a personal responsibility for Jackky" - Vashu Bhagnani

Vashu Bhagnani Kal Kissne Dekha has been postponed and it won't releasing on 29th May. Meanwhile producer Vashu Bhagnani continues to fight a lone battle considering his is the only film for which the promotion was kick started close to two months back. While other filmmakers can still take solace from the fact that there haven't been any definite release plans for their films, it has indeed been a 'kal kissne dekha' moment for Vashu as he now waits indefinitely for his son's launch on the big screen. Hours after taking this decision, Vashu gets chatting with Joginder Tuteja and bares his heart out about allegations of backtracking against him, Aamir Khan's support for the film and the huge expense that he would have to bear due to yet another push in the release date for Kal Kissne Dekha. The film has been pushed yet again. Needless to say, that's quite disappointing. [Says in a weary tone] Honestly, at the moment my head is spinning. I was a part of this intense extended meeting with fellow producers from Friday night till Saturday morning and was hoping that there would be a resolution around the multiplex issue. However, it was a deadlock yet again. Meanwhile, there were accusations that had started to build in around my integrity towards the entire episode (pauses for long). Please carry on... I have been in the industry for such a long period of time. I am not someone who is here today, will make some money from my first film and vanish away. I have made number of films and would continue to make many more for decades to come. The least I was expecting was for my fellow producers to doubt my integrity. I have my own relationship with the industry and have been known for the kind of love and affection that I have given and received. How could some people even think that I would go against the industry just so that I could bring my own Kal Kissne Dekha on theaters? The least I was expecting was for my fellow producers to doubt my integrity But even Aamir Khan seemed to have taken offence? People can say whatever they want but at the end of the day it will be only me and Aamir who know what the truth is. In my life I would have possibly spoken to Aamir for only 30 minutes in total but during last 3-4 days I have been in constant touch with him. In fact he told me that he was hearing rumours from within the industry that I would release Kal Kissne Dekha across all multiplexes and go against the producers stand. However, the moment I told him that it was untrue and at the end of the day just a rumour, he told me in no uncertain terms that he believed me and was with me. Vashu Bhagnani So Aamir's support remains with you, Jackky and the movie in general? But when did he ever withdraw his support? He was always there with my movie and has pledged support to me all over again. Decency doesn't allow me to talk verbatim about what he said or wrote to me though what I would definitely want to share is the statement that he made. It was quite heartfelt when he said that 'Vashu, I take personal responsibility of Jackky'. Now that Aamir has said this, I am relieved. I am sure he would help us all to come up with a fine resolution that would be favourable to all. Till that time, Kal Kissne Dekha continues to wait? That's not so okay actually but I am with the producers as before. I would never want my personal interests to come in the way of our unity. After breaking my head over last few days, I just decided to withdraw the movie completely. Yes, there would be huge expense involved but it's still better than the mental trauma I was going through due to my own brethren looking at me suspiciously. After breaking my head over last few days, I just decided to withdraw the movie completely Anything that you want to tell them? Arrey, nothing like that. It's not a political rally (smiles) where I have to defend myself or come up with counter allegations. Film industry has traditionally always been a family and it will always be one. There could be misunderstandings here and there or some vested interests would try to create rift between you and others. However, till the time you are united, such phase would just come and go. I am a person who comes with certain 'siddhanta' and everyone knows about that. There was never a fight at all and there would never be one. How is Jackky taking it all? Of course he is disappointed. He is young and this is his first film. Once you wait for some time for your film to arrive and then are just one week away from release, it is disheartening to see further delay coming in. But our entire family is with him and he is also a grown up boy. It should be a matter of hours before he is up and running again by participating in the film's promotion. He has been traveling the country non-stop for his concerts and is thankfully keeping quite busy to let any negative energy creep in. I want him to take this episode as a positive lesson in life and move on.

Mugdha dances for All The Best despite her injury

Download image as wallpaper Even though her neck injury is yet to heal completely, Mugdha Godse hasn't stopped shooting for her two films All The Best and Jail. Her role in Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail doesn't require much physical stress but All The Best, being a Rohit Shetty film, needs her to everything that a quintessential Bollywood heroine is expected to do. "Which means lot of music and dance", laughs Mugdha who is getting used to Bollywood scheme of things with her first full on 'masala' fare in the form of All The Best that has her paired opposite Fardeen Khan. Just having returned from her Goa stint for All The Best, she is currently shooting in Mumbai for Jail which is expected to wrap up by month end. So how has the experience been in Goa? "It was great fun though I had to be extra careful during the song shoot", says Mugdha who didn't quite get to show her dancing skills in her debut flick Fashion, "I continue to wear neck band when I am off the sets. It is quite comfortable and the healing process has been faster too. In any case, I can't afford to take much risk, what with shooting of both Jail and All The Best happening in parallel." She still did risk her neck though as she danced non-stop for a racy number in All The Best. "In fact director Rohit Shetty and the choreographer were quite considerate and suggested that I pick up lighter dance steps. But then that would have been unfair on my part, especially because everyone else who participated in the dance shoot were working so hard." "In any case, I myself didn't want to miss out on the opportunity of giving my best for All The Best. I have seen Rohit getting such fabulously choreographed numbers like 'Tha Karke' and 'No Vacancy' in his last release Golmaal Returns. Why should I have settled for anything lesser", questions Mugdha who ensured that she took adequate precautions to save her neck injury from further getting aggravated. The song that she features in is extra special for Mugdha as it was shot on outdoor location of Goa and boasted of the entire star cast comprising of Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu, Fardeen Khan and herself. "Watch out for the song. It's going to make waves on its arrival", declares Mugdha before signing off.

"If ever in my life I respected God, it was for creating Rifle" - RGV

Ram Gopal Varma For Ram Gopal Varma, weapons of mass destruction can also be termed as weapons of mass distraction. Read further - Life is a sexually transmitted disease. But seduction isn't making someone do what they don't want to do. Seduction is enticing someone into doing what they secretly want to do already. For RGV though, life and seduction goes hand in hand. Now do not jump off your seat when we break to you the news that in the near future, Ramu is planning on making a film based on the concept of 'Woman as a sexual being'. In fact, he has already decided to name his film Rifle which is going to be a tribute to the very sexy construction labourer he fantasized during his engineering days in Vijaywada. Read that? But why the name Rifle? Because RGV and many of his college mates used to call the woman 'Rifle'. Don't know why but they just did. Well, if the gang named her 'Bomb Shell' it certainly would've aroused more volcanic emotions in the hearts and minds of a thousand guys on the campus. What say? For RGV, Rifle was the ultimate epitome of what God really intended a woman to be like, before the cosmetic industry, the costume designers, the make-up people and the jewellery merchants came in and started back lighting that wonderful species called women, because he strongly feels that sexuality works more when it is ultra real rather than when it is enhanced by cosmetics. RGV considers Rifle as the sexiest woman he has ever seen in his life. Ram Gopal Varma quotes in his blog, "If ever in my life I respected God, it was for creating 'Rifle'. When I was studying in Siddhartha Engineering College Vijayawada, there used to be lot of construction activity going on there and she was one of the construction labourers. Me and many of my classmates used to watch her through our classroom window while a boring soil mechanics lecture droned on. It didn't make a difference to us that her thighs were caked with cement dust and her hair was uncombed, she used to walk bare feet with her chest thrust out and used to look straight in our eye. She had more sex in her little finger than most women in their whole bodies. To us she was just sex personified. Our imagination of how she would look naked under her clothes drove us insane. Agreed that our ages were such that even a telephone pole wrapped in a saree would look sexual, but there really was something truly amazingly electrifying sexual about 'Rifle'." RGV further adds, "I always felt there is a fundamental difference between beauty and sexuality. Beauty pleases your senses whereas sexuality controls your senses, or even more correctly, makes your senses go berserk. Your rational thinking gets lost and the animal instinct takes over. 'Rifle' used to draw out the animal in all of us. She in her non-caring demeanor and in the way she used to clothe and behave epitomized the word 'sex'. We all used to sit in the nights with textbooks on our laps and have endless discussions on the shapes and sizes of Rifle's various attributes. It took us the tremendous strength of our combined will of all our upbringing, education, social programming, morality, religious strictures and fear of law which just about managed to control us from pouncing upon her." 'Rifle' surely has done some kind of a 'Stri Charitra' on Ramu. She may be all 'Agyaat' to us but has most definitely intensified 'RGV Ki Aag' to such an extent that in the months to come you may just hear some 'Rifle' shots coming out of Ram Gopal Varma's Oshiwara office. Beauty is a cruel mistress, is it not Ramu?

Anupam Kher signs a Woody Allen film

Anupam Kher Anupam Kher who celebrates 25 years in films on May 25 with a premiere of Saraansh, couldn't have received a better silver-jubilee gift. On the morning of May 24, Anupam's international agent sent him the news that he's part of the new Woody Allen film, to be shot in London later this year. In a state of disbelief, Anupam said, "First the amazing response to the screening of Saraansh in the afternoon, then this piece of news. To be in a Woody Allen film is a dream come true for me. Last year, I worked with another international filmmaking legend Ang Lee. Now Woody Allen. What more could any actor ask for in his 25th year in the business?" Ask Anupam about the ambit of his part on Woody's film and he protests, "You think I care? All I know is that I play Freida Pinto's father in the Woody Allen film. Even if it is just one shot I'd be delirious. I've grown up and grown older watching Woody Allen's cinema. And look at my kismet. Do you know the film's cast? The Woody Allen film features the mighty Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Antonio Banderas. To be part of this vast cast is enough for me." Dancing with the joy of accomplishment, Anupam says, "Mahesh Bhatt Saab who was present at the screening of Saaransh on Sunday afternoon got on stage at the end of the screening and announced that I had received a Woody Allen film as gift for 25 years in films." To share this glorious moment with Anupam at the screening of Saaransh was his brother Raju Kher, wife Kirron Kher and close friends from the industry including Rakeysh Mehra, Dibakar Bannerjee, Neeraj Pandey and David Dhawan who had edited Saaransh. "It was very moving experience," says Anupam emotionally.
