She is one Diva who has been ruling the Bolly-roost for quite some time now. She is none other than Bollywood's very own Kareena Kapoor, who has been in the news for practically every thing that she does, right from her choice of dresses to her love life, every aspect of her personality makes for a breezy front page read.
The latest is that she is the 'Cover-Girl' for this month's issue of Elle. Stunning and refreshingly candid, Kareena Kapoor looks cool as a cucumber on this mint fresh cover! Dressed in Dior, Kareena speaks about her life in detail. She says that she follows her heart when choosing projects and the one she's most excited about in 2009 is her release with beau Saif Ali Khan. Kareena's got a tight schedule, with back-to-back shoots but has made her peace with it: "Some things can't be planned." Kareena, who is dismissive about the 'size zero' tag, defends herself saying "My body keeps changing of course, and every film you can see that, I just don't understand why the whole country had to discuss dress sizes like it was the national economy." She credits her toned body to a disciplined yoga regime and a vegetarian diet. Not just that, she's also open about her relationship with Saif; talking about the things she's learnt from him - love for reading, for one - and how their bond has grown stronger despite their different worlds.
All this and much more, only in the latest issue of Elle. Go for it guys.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 16 May 2009 | 11:24 am Writers Notepad: Prashant Pandey talks about RGV's Veerappan
Films that chronicle the life of someone famous are often award contenders and crowd pleasers. However, biopic scripts can be difficult to write. One of the more difficult challenges inherent to the biopic filmmaking is the task of creating dramatic tension when everyone knows how the story will end anyway. Prashant Pandey, the writer who has previously written films like Contract and Sarkar Raj has now finished writing a gripping biopic on India's dreaded bandit of the South - Veerappan. He is currently writing his second biopic on Paritala Ravi, one of the most dreaded political leaders of South India who was assassinated in 2005. Veerappan ain't a cradle-to-the-grave traditional portrait of the consecutive events in a bandits life but it's more of a collage and, in many ways, it will feel like an album itself. It's a collection of various moments and impressions in the life of Veerappan and together Prashant and Ram Gopal Varma believe that it'll be one of the best biopics our Indian Film Industry will ever see on the big screen. In many biopics already made, you were a witness to the precious life of an individual. Well, now get prepared to witness an extraordinary one in this Bollywood Hungama exclusive as we bring you the second edition of the Writers Note Pad - Prashant Pandey on Veerappan.
How Veerappan was born
"I badly wanted to become a screenplay dialogue writer but I wasn't getting any major substantial break. So I kept going back to television to make ends meet. Three years back, I used to work as a creative head for Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa but then to get back into films I took a writing break for three to four months. I didn't know what I was writing but I just wrote endlessly. During that period I met Ram Gopal Varma. He gave me an idea of a Mafia film. I don't know whether he was testing me but he had this remarkable ability to switch from idea to idea to tell and engage people to work with immediate effect on diametrically opposite ideas. Within fifteen days of writing the first draft of that yet-to-be-made Mafia film, I found myself in a hotel room in Chennai, preparing anxiously to enter the heart of darkness, the forests, where once lived and operated, the worlds' most vicious villain- Veerappan."
The research on Veerappan
"RGV's idea was that I meet individuals affected by Veerappans' reign and write a screenplay based on those accounts. So I met a tribal who had supplied food to Veerappan, his distant relatives and people of his gang who've now ventured out into different professions. Someone is running a hotel, somebody has a shop. Then I met many cops who ran some successful and many unsuccessful operations on Veerappan and finally met and spent days with the officers who played a key role in killing the bandit. The sheer opinions on Veerappan that came out were confusing but insightful, you can say some sort of 'Rashomon' effect started playing out on my mind ; you get a completely different version from two different people narrating you essentially the same story. Despite easy availability and recall of Veerappan, his life is wrapped in a pall of mist. No one really knows his truth. So finally, I wrote a rudimentary sort of a screenplay and came to Mumbai after two months. RGV was impressed by the work but then as Sarkar Raj had started gaining steam, he told me to write Sarkar Raj and hold on to Veerappan."
RGV's Veerappan
"In Sarkar Raj, there is a dialogue which goes, 'Mujhe Tumhare Vishwas Pe Vishwas hain'. That's how RGV works. RGV breathes and lives larger than life characters and people. Veerappan happens to be just one of them. When he told me to work on the film, 'Veerappan' was just a name
and a largely a huge mystery, but the script and work we have put in will surely make this one of the greatest biopics to come out of Indian cinema. If people think that Veerappan is shelved, then they
don't know Ram Gopal Varma. For him, nothing is shelved but on hold and ever-evolving. The script has become even better than before. We are even better prepared with various aspects of making the film. The film starts with the making of the legend called Veerappan, what went
into the making of such a bandit. The middle portion of the film focuses on the catching of Veerappan and post the interval, it's all about his downfall and killing of the dreaded bandit. The film is chaptered like a simple story book."
The casting of Veerappan
"I have a huge fascination like RGV for characters more than just well known faces. Veerappan is the hero of the film and not the actor. That is the design we are looking forward to. Actors and non-actors with tremendous potential coupled with a striking on-screen resemblance to Veerappan have been found and we are working with them."
Tough Task
"The whole physical aspect of it was tough. The violence just gets to you. I remember a prominent cop in Bangalore, who narrated to me over many hot cups of tea in great detail, how a fatal bullet from Veerappan blew his food pipe and lungs. What was striking was this cop had tremendous respect for the intelligence and instincts of Veerappan, a man who had him nearly killed. The mock ups on real locations, as in with the help of cops tried to understand how certain ambushes happened. "He was here! Right here with his gun!", old constables would tell pointing at a rock or a bush. Cops will show bullet rattled doors of police stations that he blew up and bullet wounds on their own bodies. I have had it allâ¦Conspiracy theories, emotional outbursts, threats and whole thing of whether to believe someone or not. Everybody including the waiters in the hotel had their Veerappan story to tell. The sheer impossibility of odds against which Veerappan survived strikes you hard as a writer. They test your mettle, challenge and inspire you."
Veerappan's acceptance
"No one can tell how the audience shall respond to a film like Veerappan, once released. Given the richness of the subject and Ram Gopal's Varma's skill in pitching a film to audiences, I am sure it's a great project to watch out for everyone."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 16 May 2009 | 11:19 am NYT finds 99 refreshing

Farhan Akhtar's latest starrer Kartik Calling Kartik is turning out to be more fun than any of his previous starrers. Admits Farhan, "My earlier films were somehow connected with the entertainment industry, and therefore, they had a direct or indirect bearing on my life. But in Kartik Calling Kartik, I'm totally out of character. Also, in all my films so far, I play a troubled introvert. In Kartik..., I start off as an introvert and then become a totally flamboyant guy. It's fun."
The fun element spilt over on the sets of Kartik Calling Kartik on Sunday when Farhan's co-star Deepika Padukone decided to end the controversy about how tall she is. Says Farhan, "So far, I presumed she was taller. I had even measured her height on my talk show 'Oye! It's Friday' and I was okay with the fact that she looked taller than me. I've absolutely no problem being shorter than my heroine." But, on Sunday, Deepika challenged the view. "She made me stand next to her. And to my surprise she turned out to be no taller! In fact, maybe I'm a half-inch taller than her. Deepika says she isn't as tall as she looks. It comes from having long legs, I guess."
Farhan admits he's having a ball shooting for Kartik... "But, given a chance, I'd like to direct a film this year. Unfortunately, Voice From The Sky didn't work out. And I start Don 2 next year."
While Farhan's father, Javed Akhtar, scripted Don's remake, its sequel was Farhan's idea. "When I opted for an open ending in Don, I wasn't leaving room for a sequel. I just wanted to show that the protagonist is cleverer than everyone else. But now, that ending comes in handy to carry the story forward into a sequel."
Farhan confirms the film will star Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra. "But there're lots of supporting parts that will change."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 16 May 2009 | 9:04 am Priyanka hits back, and how - IndiaGlitz
Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 16 May 2009 | 9:04 am Subhash K. Jha speaks about 99
After two months of aridity at the theatres, one is happy to straightaway take the plunge into the never-ending wonders of la-la land, also known as the silver screen.
99 is not quite the big bad blockbuster you'd have liked to see after such a longish period of deprivation. Where you'd want a big burp-inducing pickled and 'pappadomed thali', 99 serves up a tangy aperitif that you can nibble with pleasure but not quite sink your teeth into. This is a sorted- out sly swipe at the cinema of Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone where violence is satirized into a quirky comic capricious crime caper colonized by characters who are losers by instinct, nonetheless endearing in their defeatism.
99 takes some time to settle down in its groove. The first half an hour is a zonked-out mess with the co-directors indulging in a smirky we-know-it-all game of camera cockiness which leaves us exasperated.
The characters, like the wacked-out crime-dud Mahesh Manjrekar and the two petty criminals Kunal Khemu and Cyrus Broacha (the latter playing it down, playing it cool, playing the quiet deceptive fool who plays it by none of the rules) begin to make sense once they move to Delhi where Khemu-Broacha are sent to collect money from a perennial fiscal misadventures played by the ever-dependable Boman Irani with an urbane anxiety that teeters on neurosis.
Boman's performance, in fact overrules all the film's flaws of which there are many. Boman's part as an incorrigible gambler and a walking-talking financial disaster zone is so well etched and enacted you wonder if the film is just a pretext for this hugely talented master of nuances.
That the film is assembled with a level of professionalism and certain amount cleverness only helps. Amit Mistry (have we seen him before?) as a wimpish loutish money collector, also on the trail of poor Boman, is again, a performer who imbues the goings-on with a sassy splendor that the material doesn't quite justify.
But then at least, 99, with its swaggering commentary on match-fixing and middleclass over-reaching is an original piece of work, if not a classifiable work of art.
There is enough evidence here to suggest that the people behind the endeavor know what they are doing. They go about the business of creating a universe of crime and comedy without either glorifying or ridiculing the characters. We are the way we are, and what could be done about it? That's the underlining text of this tangy flavourful often funny but not fully developed plot.
As a famine-breaker it serves its purpose. We are made conscious of how far Indian cinema has come from the time when crime never paid.

When he recreated old songs, Lata Mangeshkar expressed approval. Today, Neeraj Shridhar is the hit-machine of Bhagam Bhag, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Billu and Kal Kissne Dekha. Obviously, the man has carved a niche for herself
You are probably the only successful name to move from remixes and re-creations to being an in-demand playback singer.
In those times my struggle was about when and which would be my next song. But let me tell you that the nervousness is far more now than it was at that point!
It is more than a decade since Lata Mangeshkar, no less, praised you at a concert in Mumbai.
How can I forget that evening? I was not at my best, and still Lataji made it a point to tell me, "Mujhe pasand aaya" about my recreation of her Padosan song Main chali - and it was at her own concert! That was such a privilege! The old songs have a charm that cannot be described. I know that music cannot stay the same, but the old style of knitting the film and the song together cannot be matched.
You were known as Bombay Vikings before. Please explain.
My parents moved to Sweden when I was about fourteen. I formed a band there - I was the leader but also the only one who wasn't a gora. I needed an apt name for my band and went through the usual kind of ethnic Indian names like Om, Shivam, Delhi Vikings et cetera and then thought of Bombay Vikings, which sounded nice. By the way, very few people know that music is the second-largest export of Sweden.
As a band, we did gigs in Germany, Holland, Austria, Chicago and other places. We would sing Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk and Rhythm & Blues in Swedish and English, but with my strong Indian influence. We finally dismantled the band in 1995.
How did Kya soorat hai, your maiden re-creation, happen?
I was always fond of Hindi film music. My mother sings and I have inherited the gift. I was travelling by train to a German town when I looked out of the window and saw a car travelling parallel to the train, just like in the song Mere sapnon ki rani from Aradhana. Suddenly, I began singing aloud in the empty carriage and that too in English to fit the tune. When I reached my studio, the musicians just loved the song's unique flavour and began to play it on their guitars. That was the genesis of what ultimately became my first-ever album, Kya Soorat Hai, my version of Zaroorat hai. But this happened after I had kept the project in the closet for five long years!
So you too had to go through the classic struggle in India.
Yes, Sony-BMG, then called Sony Music, was the only company to take my album as it was. So many music companies turned me down, saying,"Yeh nahin bikega" (It won't sell). They wanted changes. After that, of course, I got an offer from Universal Music. The album Woh Chali Woh Chali was released in 2003, with four remixes and five originals, followed by Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya Kahega and Zara Nazron Se Keh Do in 2004 and 2006 respectively. The song Angel eyes in Hindi and English became a rage and was performed in countries like Trinidad and Tabago to an audience of 35,000!
You are seen as a trendsetter.
(Smiles) There was another side to my struggle too - I had to face immense criticism then for mixing English with Hindi! But today, things have changed. I am thought of as a man who changed the look of music! My forthcoming album with T-Series is an original soundtrack of what I always wanted to do and Bhushan Kumar insisted that I do whatever I feel like doing, so it does seem that I have come a long way! I am happy that though it took a long while for the industry to digest my voice, it has happened.
And which was your first song in films?
My first break in films was Pyar ke naam pe in Rules - Pyaar Ka Super-Hit Formula (2003) with music by Sandesh Shandilya. I also sang Dil di nazar for Himesh Reshammiya in Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya. But yes, the good times began with Bhagam Bhag. Pritam, in that sense and more, is my mentor. Someone has to give an opportunity to an artiste that takes him to big-time and for me that was Pritam!
Most of your post-Bhagam Bhag work has also been for him.
Yes. all of Pritam's songs with me have been hits, whether it was Ishq da kalma in Goal, Baat pakki in Just Married, Race saanson ki from Race, Ae pappi from Kismat Konnection, Tha karke and Vacancy from Golmaal Returns, Talli hua from Singh Is Kinng and Love mera hit hit from Billu and the biggest of them all, Hare Ram Hare Ram from Bhool Bhulaiya, which was huge.
But this song was more about a hook-line than the composition itself.
As a song, I agree that anyone could have sung it. But it had this strange X-factor that caught on. I also worked on the English portion of the lyrics and had a great time working with Sameerji.
Who are the other music directors you have worked with?
The list of music directors who are calling me is widening, thankfully, and their songs too have been mostly popular - Rajesh Roshan's O re lakad in Krazzy 4, Vishal-Shekhar's Halke halke from Honeymoon Travels Pvt.Ltd and Salim-Sulaiman's Aaja maahi from 8X10 Tasveer were also appreciated. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Sajid-Wajid have also been very supportive. When I heard Shankar sing out Ticket to Bollywood in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and the title-track of Chandni Chowk To China to me as playback assignments I asked him why he wanted me when he was singing so fabulously himself. But he insisted that they were songs best suited to me! JBJ was a very big song for me at that time, with a combination like Yash Raj Films with Gulzar! And when Shankar told director Nikhil Advani of CC2C that only I could sing the song, it was nothing less than an honour. I also sang for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy in Heyy Babyy.
I have now recorded for Anu Malikji in Kambakkth Ishq. And let me tell you that it was a truly wonderful experience!
What else is coming up?
Pritam has given me an extraordinary song in Imtiaz Ali's new film. Pritam always gives me a lot of freedom. He believes that a singer should come up with his best.
How do you see this trend of non-singers singing more as a novelty, genuine playback singers singing far less and the general trend of ignoring the basics of good singing?
You see, what's happening in the West is beginning to happen here. A fresh voice with an attitude is needed! Till a few years go, it was about not singing even one note wrong, but today you can go and do it. In punk rock, for example, you are not supposed to sing properly - they call it "singing loose"! Changes are bound to be there, I guess.
What is the kind of music you yourself love to listen?
Among my prized possessions is a CD of Ustad Allahrakha and Zakir Hussain. And I adore Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Mukesh and Kishore Kumar.

Pioneers in international filmmaking unite the crème of mainstream and Indian film talent - Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley - on one cinematic canvas
Serendipity Films, one of the most pioneering film production companies to emerge from India in recent times, is proud to introduce its forthcoming film project at Cannes International Film Festival 2009. Already much hyped on the international film circuit, Teen Patti will be introduced by Serendipity Films to this year's gathering of the key players from the global film industry, cineastes and media alike. The second film to emerge from the forward-thinking and futuristic Serendipity stable, Teen Patti is an extraordinary example of the finest in mainstream and Indian talent being united 'on screen', as respective acting heavyweights - godfather of the Indian film industry Amitabh Bachchan and Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley - come together in a cinematic tour de force that is sure to win the praise of both critics and aficionados of independent Indian cinema alike. Much of the dialogue thus far on the mainstream amalgamating with Indian cinema has been 'behind the scenes' such as joint ventures and exploring opportunities to create crossover films.
However, Teen Patti celebrates the front of camera synergy between the artists themselves. Set in both India and England, the film is an emotionally riveting and razor sharp thriller about greed, deception and giant feats of the imagination. Relayed against the backdrop of modern India, Teen Patti is one of the most fascinating new films to emerge from Asia. Comments Ambika Hinduja, "We are extremely excited about introducing Teen Patti at Cannes for the global audience. Serendipity Films combines the collaborative genius forces from India and abroad to make films that engage not only the international imagination but also the deep core of our shared humanity. Most Indian film production houses make films that appeal to an Indian audience. However, through Serendipity Films, our vision is to make films that appeal not only to an Indian audience but also to the global audiences."
While the idea of independent cinema was still nascent in India, Ambika produced Being Cyrus, a film noir that examined the themes of greed and identity, with critically acclaimed performances by Saif Ali Khan, Naseeruddin Shah and Dimple Kapadia. This debut feature film was an art house hit that won numerous awards, and remained a firm favourite on the international film festival circuit. Teen Patti marks the already hyped follow-up to Serendipity's debut feature, and is sure to create a stir at this year's prestigious Cannes International Film Festival.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 15 May 2009 | 5:25 pm Exclusive: Find out the storyline of Big B starrer Teen Patti

We all have read about the various Hollywood celebrities going in and out of Leena Yadav's Teen Patti but what we are really interested is what the film is all about. Some say it's the remake of a Kevin Spacey starrer 21, a high powered gambling movie. But now the entire speculations end here as we at Bollywood Hungama bring you the exclusive preview watch of what Teen Patti is all about. Here's a sneak peek into the film.
Perci Trachtenberg (Ben Kingsley), widely regarded as the world's greatest living mathematician, meets Venkat Subramaniam (Amitabh Bachchan), a reclusive math genius from India, who has cracked a theory that could redefine the principles of probability and randomness. Aware that he is on the precipice of an extraordinary discovery, one that could find applications across various sciences, Venkat is encouraged to test his theory in the real world. But what starts out as an experiment between a charismatic young professor and an eccentric older one soon descends into a game neither of them can control. Convinced that Venkat's discovery has the originality and significance to change the narrative arc of mathematics, Perci understands that Venkat's theory, in essence, questions the idea of what is random and what is fated. A surprising and deeply moving redemption, initiated by Perci, closes this stupendously modern film that is as much about the private equations of honour and chance, as it is about knowledge that can change the world.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 15 May 2009 | 5:04 pm Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi voted best Bollywood coupleVeteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar and his equally talented actor wife Shabana Azmi have been voted the best couple in Bollywood in an online poll conducted by matrimony portal BharatMatrimony.Source: Entertainment News | 15 May 2009 | 4:05 pm Fortissimo to distribute Indian Film's Road, Movie in the overseas market

For the first time in the cinematic history of Indian cinema, the international sales agent Fortissimo Films has completed a deal to represent a Hindi film titled Road, Movie, that's being directed by Dev Benegal (of English August and Split Wide Open fame). Road, Movie is presented by The Indian Film Company (TIFC), the leading Indian motion picture studios, in association with Studio 18. The said deal will cover markets outside the Indian territories.
While the original screenplay of Road, Movie is done by Dev Benegal, it is being produced by the eminent producers Susan B. Landau and Ross Katz. For starters, Katz earned the Best Picture Academy Award Nomination for Sofia Coppola's Lost In Translation as well as Todd Field's In The Bedroom. Susan B. Landau's dozen strong repertoire includes the Cannes closing night film in 1999, An Ideal Husband that starred Cate Blanchett, Minnie Driver, Julianne Moore and Rupert Everett.
Shot on a lush canvas, Road, Movie stars Abhay Deol alongwith Tannishtha Chatterjee and actor- director Satish Kaushik. In a nutshell, Road, Movie is basically a carnival-esque drama that follows a young man driving an antique Chevy with two old film projectors in the back and discovering love, life and laughter on the Indian highway. The film is touted to be a colourful road trip of a lifetime - Benegal's love letter to cinema and the open road, is set against the backdrop of the epic desert landscape of India - the Kutch region in Gujarat and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.
Talking about the film, Sandeep Bhargava, CEO of the advisory to The Indian Film Company, said, "We are excited that one of international cinema's most respected and successful sales agents', Fortissimo Films, has taken a shine to our film and is partnering with us to deliver it to global audiences. Road, Movie is an important milestone in our company's endeavour to support India's growth on the cinematic world stage. And it's a great honour to collaborate with Susan, Ross and Dev on this project." While Fortissimo Films' Co-Chairman Michael J. Werner, remarked that "We are thrilled that our first foray into distributing a new domestically produced feature film from India is director Dev Benegal's, Road, Movie. It is a project that we were following for nearly two years and what captivated us about the script was how it captured aspects of India that are at once alluring, charming, revealing and compelling."
