"Rakta Charitra will re-launch both me and Vivek Oberoi" - Ram Gopal Varma

Now this one has turned out to be the mother of all casting decisions. Seven years after launching Vivek Oberoi in the role of Chandu in Company [2002], Ram Gopal Varma has showed his faith in the actor again. He has cast him in the role of the lead protagonist Paritala Ravi in his ambitious venture Rakta Charitra which would be made as a two part film. Says Ram Gopal Varma who has almost finished the shoot of Agyaat and is busy wrapping up India 24/7, "After thinking hard on every actor both known and unknown, I have finally zeroed in on Vivek Oberoi as the most ideal choice to play Paritala Ravi." On being asked if with Rakta Charitra he would be taking over the mantle of re-launching Vivek Oberoi, Ramu says, "That would be a wrong statement to make actually. The way I look at it, Rakta Charitra is a film which would be re-launching Vivek as well as me. This is going to be an defining film for both of us." This is understandable for someone like Vivek who is currently facing rough weather in the industry. But why does he say this for himself when he has been doing quite good for himself? "Well, the subject matter along with the research done on the film are the reasons that make me say that", reasons Ramu, "For me, Vivek is the perfect choice for the role. Also, I know for sure that no way can Vivek get a better role than that of Paritala Ravi and no ways can I get a better story than Rakta Charitra to be told. This is why the film would be re-launching both of us." Narrating the reason behind his choice of Vivek, he goes on to add, "He has remarkable intensity in his eyes which I noticed in the making of Company. He has a voice which commands attention, there is an arrogance in his demeanour and an enormous power in his stance. Moreover, there is also a certain vulnerability which makes one instantly warm up to him, which is what is needed to fit in a role of Paritala Ravi's profile." Apparently there was a rough look-test done for the film before Vivek was zeroed in. "After this test was done, I saw the approximation of how Vivek could look like in different phases of Ravi's life. From being a rebel in the jungles to a political strong-arm man, he was just so perfect. There and then, I was absolutely convinced and my search ended", reveals Ramu. The story of Rakta Charitra will span 12-15 years during which Vivek would be seen in different looks. As per Ramu, Rakta Charitra is the story of a man's (Paritala Ravi) phenomenal rise to power and a story of the most intense blood curdling conflict ever heard of between two individuals. A prime accused in quite a few murder cases, Paritala Ravi wasn't a rebel in his initial days but the force of circumstances made him become one. He was a soft-spoken shy guy who retreated into the jungles and then became a rebel. He wanted to avenge the death of his father and brother and even went on to become a minister in N.T. Ramarao's Cabinet before being assassinated in January 2005. To be produced by Madhu Mantena, the film would be shot in one stretch beginning 1st August once Ramu is through with the shooting of Rann. Rakta Charitra will release on two parts in the months of January and April 2009 respectively.

Mumbai Vadapavs and Hyderabadi Biryanis clash in a match of Kirkit

Sports based films, especially those revolving around cricket, have always aroused a certain level of curiosity among audiences. After all, India is a cricket crazy nation where many Indians literally eat, sleep and breathe cricket. Now, with the cricket frenzy at its peak courtesy the on-going IPL, expect to see more such films based on cricket. Probably the one film which is almost directly inspired by the IPL is a film called Kirkit. The film is directed by Shashi Preetam and despite the fact that it stars no big names, what caught our attention was the hilarious tagline of the film which asks "Can the Mumbai Vadapavs defeat the Hyderabadi Biryanis?" What's more the poster of the film actually bears the photos of these two prominent delicacies- Vadapav and Hyderabadi Biryani. In case you are still wondering what the film is all about, then well, Kirkit is a story of two groups of 5 boys each from Mumbai and Hyderabad who are on a special 'Holiday' to Goa. In Goa, the two groups run into each other and this eventually leads to a small fight. The two groups decide to resolve the matter over a tennis-ball cricket match (a-la Lagaan). What is outrageously funny is the fact that the two teams call themselves Mumbai Vadapavs and Hyderabadi Biryanis. The match between them becomes the most talked-about event of Goa, and the small tussle turns into a strong rivalry as the players play passionately for the pride of their cities. Soon the match gets complicated as many whacky and dangerous outsiders get involved in it. One of them plans to take this mad fight of the boys to the next level and make it into a national sensation. And thus comes into being, the catch line of the film Kitkit + Cricket = Kirkit. With no new films being released at the multiplexes courtesy the on-going strike, many small time filmmakers are cashing in on this opportunity by releasing their films. Kirkit is one such film but will it make it to the big league of cricket based films such as Lagaan and Iqbal? Your guess is as good as ours! As for which team wins the match in the end, is it the Mumbai Vadapavs or the Hyderabadi Biryanis? To find that, you will have to watch Kirkit. We just hope the match ends in a tie...that way we'll get to see an exciting super over for the first time in a Bollywood film. What say?

Shah Rukh to fly down with his team from South Africa to vote

The Elections never seemed more special, what with the whole Bollywood fraternity pitching their vote bank with abundant accountability. While many of the A-Listers like Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan will make sure they're in Mumbai on April 30 to cast their vote, Shah Rukh Khan is going to go a step further. He will be flying down from South Africa with his 'Knight Riders' team just for a day on April 30 to cast their vote before flying back for their next match. According to sources King Khan has requested Vijay Mallya who hosts a rival IPL team to lend him a private jet to make the whirlwind visit back a home possible. Says a source close to the iconic actor, "Shah Rukh is very particular about exercising his voting rights. There was no way he'd miss the chance to cast his vote, or let his team members skip this important day in the Indian calendar. He's very clear on the matter and would've insisted on heading home on April 30 even if a match was scheduled that day." Shah Rukh has even inspired rival team-leader Preity Zinta to not slip up on her democratic rights. Preity too will head back home on voting day with her team. However, Shilpa Shetty and her team would have to skip the vote as they have a match on April 30.

"Feroz bhai was gracious and loving till the end" - Akbar Khan

Feroz Khan's distraught youngest brother, Akbar Khan, says they had been preparing themselves for Feroz's death. "For three months now, we've been watching him slowly sink. We prayed to either relieve him from pain, or life." The entire family was gathered in Bangalore for Feroz Khan's funeral which took place on Monday at 5 pm. The funeral procession left at around 2 pm from Feroz's farm house after the afternoon prayers. "The entire family was here towards his end literally feeding him out of our hands," says the grief-stricken sibling. "And he enjoyed his glass of wine in the evenings with us till the end. He was a very loving friend and bhai." Said Akbar, "We buried him next to our mother. It's unfortunate that we couldn't bring him back to Mumbai for so many of his friends and well-wishers to see him for the last time. But his last wish was to lie eternally next to our mother in our home town near Bangalore. And we had to fulfill that wish." Restraining his grief, the youngest Khan sibling says, "He was much loved by all his friends and colleagues. Contrary to his flamboyant image, he was a very gentle sensitive soul. Even in his frail condition towards the end, he'd get up from his chair to greet each one of us in the family, no matter how old or young. He was a friend first, then a father-figure." "He was fearless even when faced with death," says Akbar. "He was the apple of our mother's eyes. All of us five brothers and two sisters looked up to him. We've lost a father-figure. He's relieved of his pain. But he was fearless till the end. He didn't even fear death. He'd always be with us."

After Raaz 2, Emraan Hashmi will play a painter again in Tum Mile

Kangna Ranaut played a fashion model in Fashion and then Raaz 2. The role carryover race continues with Emraan Hashmi who plays a painter in Raaz 2. He's now playing the same role in Kunal (Jannat) Deshmukh's Tum Mile. "But with a difference. You see, this time I actually paint. In Raaz, I wasn't really able to do much of that. All the paintings were done beforehand and I didn't get a chance to paint on screen apart from a few strokes." In Tum Mile, Emraan's newly-discovered painting skills will go a lot further. "I'm shown to be a far more intricate painter, doing not just brush painting but also charcoal etc. Here I can't fake it. I'm using all the skills that I learnt as a painter in Raaz for Tum Mile." Emraan seriously intends to pursue his painting. "And my character in Tum Mile is helping me do that. It's my first intense love story." The film is based on the deluge in Mumbai on July 26, 2005. All the scenes depicting the couple coming together during the deluge were shot in one go at a studio set. Emraan describes it as his first intense love story. "It's also my first film with Soha Ali Khan. Do I kiss her? Let that be a secret. I consciously moved away from the serial kisser's image in Raaz 2. I don't want to be known for something so frivolous. I want to move on."

Akshay Kumar will grow his beard to play Sikh in Deepa Mehta's film

After the furor that was raised over the apology of a beard that Akshay Kumar sported as a Sikh in Anees Bazmee's Singh Is Kinng, Akshay Kumar is taking no chances. For the role of the real-life Sardarji who sailed in the fateful ship named Kamagata Maru from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1914, Akshay is taking no chances. He'll grow the beard to the size stipulated by the Sikh community before plunging into the role in January 2010. In fact the actor, smarting under the attack he faced for his improper beard length in Bazmee's bearded burlesque, has this time decided to set aside all his assignments for Kamagata Maru to avoid continuity clashes with other projects. Says Deepa, "Akshay is so amazing. Considering he has so much work on hand, I was surprised when he absolutely insisted on growing a full-length beard. One of the reasons I postponed Kamagata Maru to next year was so that Akshay would be able to block an entire chunk of dates for my film and keep the beard. I was very sure that I didn't want him for a month and then return with a false beard and finish my film. It's very important for actors to respect continuity. That's the only way to work." Deepa saw Akshay Kumar play a Sardar in Singh Is Kinng before casting him in Kamagata Maru. "I thought he made a very good Sardar. He has a very Panju-Sardar look. Akshay has to play a 48-year old Sardar. And he's absolutely fine with a salt-and-pepper beard." "Akshay is also the film's producer along with my life partner David Hamilton, so his interest in the film is very, very deep," says Deepa. Post the fiasco that's Chandni Chowk to China, Akshay Kumar is also counting on converting his comic currency into something more compelling and enduring. According to Deepa, Akshay Kumar will be seen in a completely non-comic serious and politically profound role in Kamagata Maru. "Five years ago, Akshay was completely ready to transform his image in Water when he was to play the Gandhian reformist. The role in Kamagata Maru is far more challenging."

"Vivek is extremely talented and dedicated" - Kumar S Taurani

The Tauranis have made several big-budget ventures over the years. Kumar and Ramesh Taurani have produced some great entertainers, their last hit become the smash thriller RACE. Now Kumar Taurani is ready to unveil his new film PRINCE. "One should speak only when the time is appropriate. It's no point talking when your film is in rough stages. Now that PRINCE is almost complete, it's time to do the talking," Kumar Taurani tells me. PRINCE is a big-budget fare starring Vivek Oberoi in the lead. Shot entirely in South Africa, the film is a stylish entertainer that co-stars three new leading ladies. Taurani has entrusted the directorial responsibilities to Kookie Gulati, who has directed a plethora of music videos for Tips. "Kookie came up with a riveting story, which I liked instantly. He had planned everything on storyboard. I could actually visualise my film even before we started filming," he says. Taurani is extremely happy with Kookie's abilities. "He has made a wonderful film. It's very difficult to classify it in any particular genre because something like PRINCE hasn't been attempted on Hindi screen before," he states. The grapevine is abuzz with the news that Taurani has spent a fortune on the film. But is the project viable, given the fact that Vivek isn't going the best phase professionally? "There's no denying that I have spent a packet. As for the project being viable or not, I wish to add that we have always made films with actors who suit the roles. In fact, right from SOLDIER [Bobby] to RACE [Saif], the actors weren't going through the best phase till these films happened. I hope PRINCE will change all that for Vivek, who is extremely talented and dedicated to his craft," he says. Taurani also refutes talk that the brothers have parted ways professionally. "That's a misconception. Ramesh is making his films, I am making mine. It's just that we've divided our work," he says.

Dekh Bhai Dekh on big screen, will feature Adhyayan as Shekhar Suman's son

'Dekh Bhai Dekh', one of Indian television's most successful serials, will be now made into a movie, bringing the real life father- son, Shekhar and Adhyayan Suman together for the first time ever. Like the serial, the movie too will be directed by Anand Mahendroo. Although the trend of converting serials into movies has been prevalent in the West with serials such as 'The Simpsons' and 'Sex and The City' being converted into motion pictures, 'Dekh Bhai Dekh' will be the first Indian serial to be made into a movie. The story for the film will continue from the point it left off in the serial, along with the entire cast from the sitcom. The new addition in this will be Adhyayan, who will be playing the grown up son of Shekhar Suman. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Anand Mahendroo said, "The movie will be a teen-romance, with Adhyayan playing an army officer. For this role, we required him to be very lean and fit. That's why I asked him to lose weight. Adhyayan has lost about 7 kilos, but I think he needs to lose some more. With this in mind, he's got an intense workout schedule which includes power yoga and cardio and dance." Anand, when asked, why he chose Adhyayan for the role, he avers, "I have seen Adhyayan's work and have even watched his upcoming film Jashn. He is someone who fitted the role perfectly. The only issue was his weight, which also has been taken care of now." On the other hand, speaking about the heroine opposite Adhyayan, he said, "As for the leading lady, we haven't yet finalized still. In fact, we will be launching a talent hunt for the same and the winner will be chosen as the lead actress of the film. The talent hunt show is scheduled to be aired by the 15th of May. The film will then hit the floors somewhere around the 15th of July."

Vatsal Sheth on the cover of G2

He came, he saw and he conquered, not just the silver screen, but also the hearts of zillions of his fans worldwide. We are indeed referring to Vatsal Sheth who made a splash in showbiz with his teeny-weeny act in the famous TV serial 'Just Mohabbat'. And much like his predecessors, exit TV…enter Bollywood. That's what paved the entry of this young lad on the driver seat of the rather forgettable flick called Tarzan - The Wonder Car, which was followed up his 'heroic' act in the recently released multi-starrer Heroes. The good news is that this man is back and this time as a cover boy for the magazine called 'G2- The Global Gujarati'. This issue talks about his jumpstart with 'Just Mohabbat' to the tinsel stardom, his inspiration that drove him to be an actor, his regrets, his dream actress, parental reaction to showbiz to his forthcoming films etc. Surely an interesting read not just for global Gujarati's but for all the global fans of Vatsal Sheth.

Shyam Benegal's movie goes through a title change again

For his second consecutive film, Shyam Benegal is seeing a change in title. His last year's release Welcome To Sajjjanpur was earlier titled Mahadev Ka Sajjanpur [based on the character played by Shreyas Talpade - Mahadev] before the new (and more multiplex friendly) title came into being. Now history is repeating itself as the title of his latest film Abba Ka Kuan too has gone for a change. The film would henceforth be called Well Done Abba. "It is much more audience friendly title, isn't it", says a prominent crew member, "Not many would have been able to comprehend what Abba Ka Kuan stood for. In fact it also gave an impression to some that it is a movie made for children when the fact is that it is for all age groups. However, Well Done Abba instantly gives an impression of this being a light film with a heart warming feel to it." What cannot be denied also is the fact that by bringing in an English title, the film finds itself in vogue, something that Abba Ka Kuan may not have necessarily succeeded in. Though the film is rooted in simplicity with the right values attached, something which is expected out of a Shyam Benegal film, a title like Well Done Abba should get the film far more visibility for it's target multiplex audience. This certainly is the right move for a film, the shooting of which has recently been completed at Ramoji Filmcity and Ibrahimpattnam Village, Hyderabad. The film has also been shot in parts at Whistling Woods, Film City, Mumbai and the Mumbai - Pune Expressway. Produced by BIG Pictures in collaboration with Shyam Benegal, the film has an interesting mix of cast which includes Boman Irani in a double role along with Minissha Lamba and Sammir Dattani in pivotal roles. The film is inspired by two short stories: 'Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi' by Jeelani Bano and 'Phulwa Ka Pul' by Sanjeev and a film treatment by Jayant Kriplani. With music by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics penned by Ashok Mishra, Swanand Kirkire and Ila Arun, the film stars some of Benegal's favourites like Ravi Kishen, Ila Arun, Salim Ghouse, Rajit Kapur, Yashpal Sharma and Ravi Jhankal. Other than these actors, the film also features Sonali Kulkarni and Deepika Amin in important roles.

Neil becomes brand ambassador for an Italian watch brand

The moment he entered the tinsel industry, he immediately got touted as the 'it' boy, for he had everything that it takes to become the poster boy of today and the superstar of tomorrow. We are indeed talking about the blue eyed boy of Bollywood, Neil Nitin Mukesh. After having made a splash in Bollywood with his superlative acting in films like Johnny Gaddaar and Aa Dekhen Zara, Neil indeed has become a hot property not just amongst the filmmakers but also amongst the dream merchants (read 'ad walas'). After having endorsed a leading pair of shoes, Neil is now being chosen to be the Brand Ambassador for a leading brand of Italian watches called Morellato Watches. The news is that the makers themselves came down to India to rope in this sensational actor for the reason that 'Neil has got the looks of an international star, and, with his stubble on, he looks rugged.' Insiders say that the said brand was particularly looking for the tough look, and that's exactly the reason they did not settle with any chocolate boy Bollywood star, as they wanted to maintain brand image in an international market also. And since the fact remains that the aforementioned watch brand has a strong presence in international market, they wanted a star, who is young and would look like an Italian or an Mexican, a 'criteria' that Neil qualified with natural ease! All that we can say is that, now on, one can easily tell the 'real reason' of the shoot up of the watch brand's sales. What say, Neil!

Neetu Chandra, Tanushree Dutta & Anupam Kher in Apartment

Download image as wallpaper Two months back, Neetu Chandra was at pains to explain to all and sundry that her 13B wasn't a horror film but instead a supernatural thriller. Now she is forced to take the same route of denial even as the shoot of her latest film Apartment is making brisk progress. "I don't know why some out there are hell bent on placing me in a horror film. I have nothing against the horror genre and who knows, I may work in one as well in near future. But just like 13B wasn't a horror film, as everyone saw it for themselves, even Apartment doesn't have any inclusion of horror element. Guess people have started associating horror with every film that is set within the confines of four walls in a skyscraper apartment." She insists that while 13B still had supernatural element attached to it, if not the horror, Apartment is a plain and simple dramatic thriller. "Jag sir (as Jagmohan Mundhra, the film's director, is popularly called) is really shaping up Apartment quite beautifully. It is an edge of the seat thriller and I am enjoying every day of the shooting. This is one of those films where I feel like coming in every day the moment I wake up. In fact I get depressed when there is an off day since I am myself so inclined to see which scene is going to be shot next." Interestingly, Apartment is the same film which was earlier titled Roommates and was supposed to star Gul Panag and Raima Sen along with Pakistani actor Mikaal Zulfiqar of Mundhra's own Shoot On Sight fame. However, the cast as well as the film's title went through a complete change and Apartment stars Rohit Roy and Anupam Kher along with Neetu Chandra and Tanushree Dutta. Though Neetu is not willing to talk much about her character in the film, she hints on being prodded further, "Apartment tells the story of this girl (played by me) who comes from a small town to this big city. She sees quite a lot of changes around her which start reflecting in her personality. Soon, she becomes quite possessive about things and obsession takes over. Now what is she so obsessed about is something for which you would have to wait. It is too early to talk about it." In the film, Neetu's character is shown to be sharing an apartment with Tanushree Dutta. Now whom does she get obsessed with? Is it the apartment, Tanushree, someone else or herself? Well, time should tell!
