Amitabh Bachchan dresses as a Rajasthani man for a TV commercial

What's common to 'Rozana', 'Mere Angne Main Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai', 'Neela Aasman So Gaya' and 'Hanuman Chalisa'? Well, for those who worship Bollywood religiously, this must be as simple like an MBA grad learning ABC. But for the rest of the unaware lot, the common factor that binds all of the above is the one and only Amitabh Bachchan as he has done the 'vocals' for all of the above tracks. It's not rocket science to say that the Big B has always been a trendsetter of sorts. This time round, Bachchan has got yet another first by singing for a commercial as well as acting in it. The product in the spotlight is the famous 'Himani Navratna Oil', for which Big B is also the brand ambassador. While the ad has been shot by Sujoy Ghosh, (who is also directing Big B in Aladin), the jingle has been composed by the versatile duo of Vishal - Shekhar. And if sources are to be believed, then news has it that Big B spent long hours in the studio with the musicians and also enhanced the ad by providing his own inputs. And considering the fact the ad has been the as choreographed by the popular duo Bosco - Caesar, the ad simply becomes a must watch. Talking about the 'experience' of working with the Big B, Sujoy reminisces, "It was amazing because before I could even ask them, they were there. It was like going back to the sets of Aladin. He has an incredible energy level that comes across on the screen as well. We had an amazing time shooting the ad with him." Any more news about the ad, we will surely kill ourselves due to suspense and curiosity. To cut a long story short, simply bring on the ad, we say...

Sujoy Ghosh launches a blog for his upcoming film Aladin

"Two people sat in the coffee shop of Marriott and believed that they will make a film which has never been seen before on the Indian screen..." This one line by Sujoy Ghosh on his blog is good enough to arouse the curiosity of cinema lovers. The talented filmmaker, whose debut film Jhankaar Beats became a landmark film, is now on his way to creating another benchmark in Bollywood. And the film in question is none other than Aladin, a film that takes a contemporary look at the classic fairy tale. And as a first-of-its kind initiative, Sujoy has created a special blog to give all of the movie enthusiasts an insight into the magnanimous task of making an epic film like Aladin. He has now initiated a blog whereby he plans to share each and every moment of the film's making. He will tell the readers about how Aladin came into being, how he managed to put together such an extraordinary star cast and what's more on the anvil. The blog will also contain some exclusive pictures taken on the sets of Aladin, which will further give an insight into the entire experience of making such a colossal film! Gradually, the cast and crew will also step in, blog, pitch, joke, bitch, rant and rave on the blog! Sabu Cyril, art director extraordinaire, will take the readers through the stunning sets he created and the thought processes behind each. And there'll be bits and bytes from the various crew members who braved the elements and temperaments to make Aladin. Produced by Eros International and Boundscript, Aladin stars the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Riteish Deshmukh and also introduce the sensational Jacqueline Fernandez. Packed with fun, music, masti, action and adventure Aladin boasts of a visual scale never seen before on Indian screen and arrives in theatres on 24th July. Director Sujoy promises the film to be a visual treat. "It will be like eating ice-cream with your eyes" he quips!

RGV's Rann versus PPC's Raftaar

There're two films on newsroom activities being readied right now. But neither Ram Gopal Varma's Rann nor Shamim Desai's Raftaar 24x 7 can use the stand-alone title 24X7 because that's a title patented by NDTV. Although Sanjay Dutt, who has the rights for the title 'India', has finally agreed to let the Big B use India for Rann. But the title problem remains unsolved. On the other hand, PPC is also going ahead full-throttle with the completion and release of their own media film Raftaar 24X7 which stars Aditya Pancholi as a suave very stylish media baron. A poor man's version of the media baron played by the Big B in Rann. While Ram Gopal Varma is busy putting together his own film on a media war, there's a war of another kind brewing for the film from behind the scenes. Debutant director Shamim Desai's Raftaar 24X7 is being rapidly readied for release. It stars Aditya Panscholi as a suave media baron while Emraan Hashmi plays his favourite protégé. Rann features the Big B as the media baron while Riteish Deshmukh plays his protégé Both the films are about the conflict between bona- fide news and sensationalism in contemporary times. And Percept seems determined to make the best of the interest generated by the media theme in Ramu's Rann. Interestingly, Aditya Panscholi who plays a pivotal role in Raftaar 24X7 was also meant to be part of Rann. But he was later replaced by Mohnish Behl. Could it because Ramu wanted to avoid any overlapping between the two media films? Says Pancholi, "Yes I was part of Rann. But I'm not in it. Ramu's film takes a panga with the media. Raftaar 24X 7 is something else altogether."

"Some people were coming on my website and calling me a lesbian w***e"- Celina Jaitly

Download image as wallpaper For the first time ever in the history...arrghhh. Not working. Ok, let me try this. For the first time ever in my journalistic career, I am writing the stand first even before I've interviewed the celebrity. I call it an 'On Location Intro'. What's more, it's going to be a long one because our starry photographer Vickky Idnani is present at the steamy Jaitly's terraced apartment doing an outdoor photoshoot with her. Lucky I got my laptop with me because you never know when the inspiration comes thick and fast. The first one as I call it in my words was - The Butterfly Effect. Nestled in the heart of an angel with a white gown and wings, Celina looked celestial, and life hasn't always looked so blissful. Are not all angels spirits that minister and their ministry is directed towards those people who are going to inherit everlasting life? I was on the verge of inheriting one till my hands touched the hot cuppa coffee mug. "Please finish your photoshoot Celina, I'll wait", I said. So as a spectator, I was watching too many flashes sprinkled upon the actress trying to control the wind which was blowing her well kept hair and her wings which kept falling off her back. "Let's have a messy look Celina", suggested Idnani. A few poses here and there and that's it. It was time for a dress change. In walks the white angel and out comes the red princess. Oh I wish I was her knight in shining armour. Jaitly sits on the piano chair while the photographer adjusts the light. To our surprise, Celina plays the piano and how! A one minute wonder gets the much awaited standing ovation from all present there including me. Back to some serious shoot. A wine glass with some red wine in it kept untidily in her hands, her hair falling off her shoulders and her body resting on the piano made me recall the UB40's famous number, 'Red red wine'. Wish she could play that on her piano. Anyway, from all the fun and frolic of the shoot we move on to the dining table. Just me and her. Time for some serious talk arrives. I was a bit apprehensive on whether or not Celina will graciously acknowledge my questions in the right context, in spite of me knowing that she openly talks about issues pertaining to gays, sex, marriage, politics and much more in a wider spectrum. For me though, this was my first time being too bold about the way I've ever asked questions to any celebrity. In fact, I actually felt like angelic Celina was sitting on my shoulder saying, "Let's go for it". What followed went down to be the most intrepid interview Celina Jaitly has ever given to any media so far. In other words, we sometimes like to call it 'A Bollywood Hungama extreme exclusive'. What personal experiences of friendship in your life have shaped your views about homosexuals? I've had gay friends all my life, more so, gay men. Somehow in my school I always landed up being a protector of my male friends. I led a very protective life being an army officer's daughter and coming from five generations of armed forces. Then came a time when I had to move out of my house to study. I was seventeen and that's when I had also started modelling. At that point, the first thing I thought was, wouldn't it be great if I had a boyfriend. Then one night, I went to a night club with my modelling gang after doing my first show with Marc Robinson. There I met this wonderful guy who was fifteen years older than me with impeccable manners. We hung out a lot and he never tried anything silly with me. We went out with a group of friends a couple of times and I fell in love with him. He then proposed me saying, "Will you be my girlfriend?" I was over the moon because this was the first time I was falling in love. I would notice that he is only in close proximity with me when we would go out in public. Otherwise, he would avoid me all the time. I didn't understand and as months went by, my feelings for him soared but his distance grew much faster. Soon the relationship became abusive and that's when everybody told me, "Don't you realise he is a gay?" And in spite of the abuse from your gay boyfriend, how did you manage to support the gay cause? I had gay friends all my life but somehow I myself didn't know the whole concept of what being a gay was all about. As I entered modelling, I did come across quite a few gay friends, but he, my boyfriend, was completely normal at times. In times to come, I was just in a relationship which I was holding on to because I was completely in love with this person whom I thought would change one day for the better. But it never happened. It became so bad that I went under depression and became bulimic. One fine day, I found out that I had lost so much weight that I only weighed 41 kilos. I decided to confront this issue with the help of my brother and friends and came out of this relationship. Then started a wonderful friendship with my boyfriend who helped me come out of this. It just became a wonderful friendship to last and then I made some gay friends. I had this friend who was a victim of gay bashing at night clubs because he was cross dressed designer who was struggling with his gender. He was also thrown out of his house and there were times when he had no money and I would share my money with him from whatever little I earned from modelling. That's how my whole association with the gay community began. My best friends trauma became my own and I started supporting the gays. I had gay friends all my life but somehow I myself didn't know the whole concept of what being a gay was all about But it's only recently that people oppose you being so much in favour of gays. Why not back then? I am always in favour of gays since I started modelling. Yes, at that time, I wasn't well known nor was I an actress. I was just a citizen of India supporting and taking up a cause so dear to me. Only when I came to Mumbai and established myself, I got to know what was happening with the gay community. That's when I decided that I should do something when my friend passed away. He died due to bulimia induced heart attack, had been raped and had no one to go to. I decided to take it upon myself. Martin Luther King once said, "You have to take the first step". So I said to myself that if no one is going to do it, I'm going to do it. I went to the 'Mumbai Pride Parade' and walked hand in hand with every person who was a gay because I wanted to let people know what being a gay is all about. It is just another relationship. Your relaunching of 'Bombay Dost' have got you hate mails. Isn't this getting a bit personal now? It was always personal. In fact, the Lesbian and Gay community have gone and bombarded all media for putting up with the wrong information that the gay community sent me hate mails. What is happening is that there are certain cultural groups who are trying to insinuate that I am changing the Indian culture and making everybody a homosexual. Then I had people calling me on my website that I am a Lesbian wh**e. There was one journalist who asked me during the launch of Bombay Dost, "Will you marry a gay man or a lesbian woman?" I am here doing this only for the simple reason that at least understand what gay community is all about. Have you got any role model who are openly gay, lesbian or trans-gender? Yes, I have. The Prime Minister of Iceland is the first openly gay person at that level in politics. I admire her. I admire Prince Manvendra because he has been practically de-throned and still stood up for what he felt was right as he could not be trapped in that anymore. I wouldn't call them gay idols but I just have idols who've stood up for their rights each time. We pretend to be one of the most booming economies of the world, we are the world's largest democracy, education is top notch in India and they think that you can be modern by drinking and smoking but when it comes to homosexuality, the same people call a homosexual man a fa**ot. I don't understand. Marriage has been a heterosexual institution in our society since its inception. Would you then work with the government to pass this bill or an act about getting gay marriage legalised? I had started that work six months ago when I first started a petition on Facebook which has been joined by almost three hundred members from all over the world of gay and student community who've come and supported me. This is a petition to the Health Ministry to have article 377 firstly amended and then comes adoption. It just takes good human beings to make good parents and it has nothing to do with how you have sex. Straight couples are far raunchier if we start getting into this issue. So let's leave it here. It just takes good human beings to make good parents and it has nothing to do with how you have sex Say if all goes well and gay marriage is legalised. Don't you think adoption will raise a few more eye brows? Today we have an issue of Rubaina Khan, the slum kid from Slumdog Millionaire. Her parents are trying to sell her. Let's start with the slums itself, let's start with millions of children in the sex racket and paedophilia, children into drugs, etc. What do these children need? They need love and support and it doesn't matter whether it comes from a male or a female parent. What would a child do if a mother dies? He/she would be brought up by his or her father, right? How would a gay couple have values is a stupid question because if that's the case, they wouldn't marry in the first place. You need to be good cultured and good valued person to adopt any kid. Don't you think there should be at least one political party supporting the gay rights movement? Congress has been very proactive to support this cause. The Health Minister spoke in the United Nations Health forum about wanting to have gay rights in India. He also spoke about the article 377 which considers gay sex as illegal. He himself wants to do that. The irony of it is that there is a law since 1850's which the people of India follow. To change a law which is so old will take its time. You're also providing financial help to the publishers of 'Bombay Dost'. You're giving them an inch but what if they take a mile out of you? I have a platform today. If I speak, may be people will notice. I am a brand ambassador and a filmstar. I am just using my platform to help somebody and why not? I have three films a year releasing worldwide and they think that I need publicity. If I wear an outfit wrong, believe me, that'll be more publicity than I can handle. I am not going out of my way but am using the tools to support the cause I'm so passionate about. 'Bombay Dost' isn't a typical glamour magazine. It's about bonding the gay community together and that is the only way people will come to know of what's happening with such communities. Now if I as a gay right activist won't help it, then who will help it? They had no sponsor for the mag seven years ago and it shut down. I won't let it happen now. I have three films a year releasing worldwide and they think that I need publicity. If I wear an outfit wrong, believe me, that'll be more publicity than I can handle. You talk tough and intelligent. How about being a columnist for 'Bombay Dost'? I have been offered and I will be writing from the next issue. I have also started 'Talk to Me' forum on my website which is more so for the sexual minorities who can ask for help regarding mental issues, etc. I have doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists on board coming and visiting me on my site to help support the cause. They can laugh, joke and be serious about any issue which they feel they want to discuss. You've got bunch of friends and supporters in the film fraternity. Isn't it sad to know that you are the only celebrity fighting for the gay rights openly? I think secretly, everyone supports me. I don't blame them because for the simple reason that they will be tagged as homosexuals. And not everybody can handle that. Again it boils down to the same old issue - Gay people have no rights, it is not accepted in our culture, homosexuality is not legalised in India. So why would a celeb support an illegal activity because that's what it says in the Indian Penal Code. Poll: Should Bollywood actors come out in support of homosexuals Say if there is a cause which states: All individuals convicted of any crime, big or small, be barred from the Indian Politics? I will be the first person to join that group, believe me. May be I should start another group on Facebook for that. Let's move to politics now. You've already campaigned for someone in the current elections, right? Right. I have campaigned for only one candidate this year, Vibhakar Shastri who is the grandson of Late Shri Lala Bahadur Shastri. My great grandfather and Vibhakar's grandfather were close friends. Vibhakar is a very well educated guy, fabulous gentleman and young. That's what we need in our present government right now. He requested me to join him in Fatehgarh to meet all the villagers and I went and did that. I went walking village to village because I felt that he was the right candidate. I know about the person I'm campaigning for from head to toe. Accident On Hill Road, your next thriller after Red. Talk please. It's a Magna Films Production. It's a film based on a true story of one incident happened in the United States and it created a lot of waves in the early eighties. They have changed the screenplay to an Indian setting. It's an interesting story because I will be deviating away from comedies for a change. It's an immense thriller and we are starting the shoot tomorrow. It also stars Abhimanyu, the actor from Gulal and Farooq Sheikh is making his comeback after Saas Bahu Aur Sensex. The film centres around my character and it's a woman oriented subject. I am not allowed to inform you about the incident as that is the essence of the film. But after Red, Accident On Hill Road is one film which will bring out the best in me. Your turbulent relationship, followed by your passionate support for the gay community, launch of India's first ever gay magazine, taking the abuse, politics and an intense thriller Accident On Hill Road. Wow! Too serious an interview? There is too much trauma and trouble in the world and the only way to come out of it is to do comedy films (laughs and again gets serious). I have two passions, one is acting and the other is humanity. As a performer, I want to make people laugh by doing silly and stupid stuff. As a human, I'd like to say - Everybody thinks of changing the humanity...but nobody thinks of changing themselves.

Strike Update: No solution yet, strike enters fourth week

There's no concrete solution yet to the ongoing crisis. The producers/distributors and multiplexes have yet to reach a consensus over several thorny issues that have snowballed into a major issue. The multiplexes have been meeting amongst themselves almost everyday, trying to come up with a solution that would be acceptable to producers/distributors. A meeting between the warring factions is expected to take place next week. Let's see what comes out of it. If the delay in arriving at a solution comes out by, say, next week, it will take another 6-7-8 weeks for big-budget films to arrive in cinemas, since that's the time it takes to hype a film prior to its release. Which means, there might not be a major release till mid-June. Meanwhile, Studio 18 has revived GHAJINI and UTV has opened DEV D at several single screens across Mumbai and other centres, avoiding the national chain of multiplexes completely.

Aborted projects, canceled events, delayed shoots - Bollywood bleeds

Ok, so we all know how Bollywood is going through it's roughest patch in the current decade, with absolutely nothing happening in the tinsel world. Picture this. Not just majority of actors (other than the A+ and A league) are sitting at home due to aborted projects, there are quite a few others who have been asked to 'stay at home' till a call comes with the announcement of their film's shoot being resumed. Earlier, it had always seemed that actresses had some advantage at least because they could always maintain a good cash inflow, courtesy, their performances at events or ribbon cuttings, but even that has seen a major reduction in values. Says an actress (on condition of anonymity) who has played a lead role in four films during last four years, but is virtually sitting unemployed at home today, "I was signing projects quite carefully and always believed in doing just one film at a time. However, even though I had signed two films for which I had to begin shooting, there is no word from the producers. Also, performances at events too have gone down as the corporate world too is spending money quite carefully." Another hunky actor who has shown promise over the years, is waiting endlessly for the shooting of his under-production film (which is almost 70% complete) to resume, too rues the fact that Bollywood is going through its worst phase. "I had assigned my dates to this project, and, in the process, lost out on some other plum projects. Fair enough... because it was an ethical decision to make. However, now after having lost those projects, my current project too is now showing any signs of revival. I come from a strong financial background, so it is still okay for me to wait for work. I can't imagine the plight of those who come from far-far away to make a fortune in this city." With the stand off between producers and multiplexes showing no signs of respite, and, with IPL already showing signs of being a brutal enough force to gobble down anything and everything that comes in it's way, it is going to be a zero affair in cinemas this summer. Add to that a dozen odd biggies biting the dust since middle of 2008 (with recession being attributed as the major reason behind these failures) and within less than a year, smiles have more or less vanished in Bollywood. Poll: Do you think Bollywood producers are doing the right thing by stopping film releases for so long?

Sir Ben Kingsley do to a cameo in Teen Patti

Why is Sir Ben Kingsley, who, not so long ago swept the world, critics and the Oscars by playing Gandhi, ready and willing to do a 5-day cameo in an out-and-out Amitabh Bachchan film? The announcement that, Ben Kingsley would be working with the Big B in Leena Yadav's Teen Patti comes as a shock. According to insiders, the film was complete many months ago...but for five days of work with a Caucasian actor. Says a leading member of the unit, "It was a bit tricky and complicated. Getting a white-skinned actor at the last stage of the film wasn't easy. Everyone knew that the film was almost complete. So, approaching a big name appeared absurd. Websites and newspapers weren't making it easier for us by telling the world that we've cast Pierce Brosnan or Richard Gere in the role. Where did they come in? We didn't even start casting until our producer returned from her honeymoon a few months ago." Ben Kingsley, it seems was keen for a long time, to be part of an Indian project. While shooting in Tunisia with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for The Last Legion, he had offered to do Taj Mahal with her featuring them as Shahjahan and Mumtaz Mahal. But recession killed that project. And Kingsley's keenness to be associated with a completely Indian project remained unfulfilled...until now. And never mind, if in the words of a crew member, "It's a role that any actor can do." If the mighty Sylvester Stallone can be seen lending support to Akshay Kumar, why not Ben Kingsley in a cameo for an Amitabh Bachchan starrer?

Pixion on expansion spree; sets up new studio, preview theatre

It seems like Pixion is stepping on the gas. After acquisition of two international studios last year, Mumbai based post production house Pixion has now setup a new Animation, VFX and DI facility, spread over a whooping 11,000 sq ft of area at a prime location in Andheri, Mumbai. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Naresh Malik, CEO of Pixion, shared, "With an investment of over Rs 60 crore to begin with, the new facility will commence its operations from the first week of June." The facility will have space for as many as 70 artists. Pixion will shift a few employees from its existing studio in Bandra and will also recruit as required. "This studio is a part of our expansion plans. Since Andheri is a business hub and a lot of our clients are located in that area, we wanted to make sure that we are accessible to them easily. We will look at other expansion (options) depending on the industry response," he added. The post production biggie has also set up a preview theatre (capacity 25) at its Bandra facility. "We have installed film and digital projectors which will give a real-time movie experience. The main reason behind setting up a preview theatre was to have a platform to showcase our post production work to clients and team members. Besides, this theatre will also be used for commercial purposes such as private screenings and others," Naresh added. Pixion's state-of-the-art facilities provide end to end digital post production solutions to film and video production houses, ranging from offline to online processing, graphics and telecine. The current projects at the studio include post production of few Bollywood movies and an animation feature titled as Mahayoddha Ram.

7Seas Tech to foray into gaming retail

Hyderabad based game developing company, 7Seas Technologies has entered into the game retail market in India with the launch of six popular budgeted casual computer game CD packs. The online and mobile games developer has awarded the exclusive rights to publish and distribute these game CD packs across India to a Hyderabad based company Comprint, which will take the games to leading stores by May 2, 2009. "We are launching six casual computer game CD packs in genres including action, sports, kids, fun, puzzle and cricket in the Indian market. India is a price sensitive market and therefore we have priced these packs very competitively. This will also help thwart piracy," said L Maruti Sanker, Managing Director of 7Seas Technologies. The CD packs, each containing 20 games, are priced at Rs99 whereas the whole set is available for Rs399. The games will be available at more than 600 large format retail stores including Landmark, Big Bazaar, Music World, Odyssey and Planet M. Satyanarayana, General Manager, Comprint said, "Comprint is also gearing up to open its own shop-in-shops in leading retail stores such as Big Bazaar. We plan to launch nearly 30 shop-in-shops exclusively for retailing game CDs and DVDs under our brand 'GameX' during this calendar year," he said. "Our main objective is to attract game enthusiasts who want to play such games on their normal household PCs in the offline mode. These games will suit well for those in rural and semi-urban areas which don't have proper internet facilities," Sanker added.

"I attribute Koel Puri for spanking my butt in Rock On" - Purab Kohli

Click above for more stills This was one interview I was looking forward to, not just because I'd rated Rock On five stars in my Observer series newspapers in London, eight months ago, but because I was too desperate to meet the 'Killer Drummer' Purab Kohli for I too tried to sing 'I will survive' in front of my friends. The trouble was I didn't survive a second. For me, he rocked and yet there was no mention of him in my review. Perhaps I over looked it. But not any more. Come to think of it, his ability to give grandiose and surreal characters soul is proof of his heapin' helpin' of pure uncut manly talent and frankly he's one slice of grade A man steak I wouldn't mind tenderizing. Anyway, Purab shows up as he opens the door to our Bollywood encounter with his curly hair, dressed in standard, more like any struggling actor-retro-grunge, flashing his 'Popeye muscles' trying to break free from his unbuttoned green and yellow chequered summer shirt adoring his brown vest. Extending his hand in salutation, he glides into a bar chair opposite me offering me something to drink on a sweaty Thursday. He urges me to have a ginger drink stacked up with ice. I accept. Then he immediately jumps off his chair and stands next to the door to enact a real life scene when Gattu aka Abhishek Kapoor danced and jumped in joy after reading the first ever review of Rock On which I'd written. That was a classic performance by a Bandra boy in full flamboyance. Where majority of the actors would've stayed away from a performance like that in front of a journalist, Purab didn't give a damn about glimmering the prudent history - He was hired to deliver, and he does deliver...KD style. He is just cool and always has been ever since he started his career as a Channel 'V' VJ... Dipping into the depths of his exquisite mind to discover his version of Purab Kohli, buried beneath the 'Killer Drummer', the actor goes back and forth into his past, present and the future as Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent and UK's Harrow Observer columnist Devansh Patel finds out whether or not Purab will survive in Bollywood after the super success of Rock On, his journey from 'Chicken' to 'KD', his ability to open up to his fans, his turn ons, Rangeen and A Rectangular Love Story - his unreleased films and his unexplored areas in acting. Is the Killer Drummer's charm here to stay for good? I hope so. I think it's a part of me that a lot of people have liked. A lot of 'KD' in the film was me. I think we all as actors hope that we can retain ourselves in the business for a longer period of time to get more work, do more work and get popular. My rise has been a journey which ain't meteoric but after Rock On, you can definitely say so From a mere 'Chicken' in Supari to 'KD' in Rock On, would you term your rise to fame as meteoric? I still think it's a journey more than a rise. I was not someone who had an idea that it was acting I wanted to pursue as my career or to do a film like Rock On. If you look back at my career, the first thing I did in my life was act in a television series called 'Hip Hip Hurray'. Then I moved on to be a VJ on Channel V. I mean, today if someone was to come up to me with a film like Supari, I would've been weary to do it, thinking back that you want that good launch, you want that big producer, the right cast, etc. These are the elements which help you to climb up to be a star and it's not rocket science now. I've always tried and tested things in my life and it has worked. My rise has been a journey which ain't meteoric but after Rock On, you can definitely say so. I attribute Koel Puri for spanking my butt in Rock On. That's what got the beautiful girls all over the world to open up in front of me Your ability to get people in your audience to open up to you is pretty astounding. What do you attribute that to? I'm quite an open person. If people ask me questions about myself, I have nothing to hide because I choose to live an honest life. In terms of opening up to your audience and your audience accepting you for who you are is what they eventually see on the big screen. To a certain extent, 'Killer Drummer' was actually me in the real and reel life. That's the way I am and I have grown up playing the parts that I've played. I started acting when I was just eighteen and I'll be thirty in a few months. So for twelve years, I've contributed a lot to the roles I've played and vice versa. As an actor, you have to have an audience or fans opening up to you. You are catering to them because they want to see more of you. In good humour, I attribute Koel Puri for spanking my butt in Rock On. That's what got the beautiful girls all over the world to open up in front of me (laughs). You weren't nominated for the Filmfare Awards. Many feel you deserved one. We feel something bigger than Filmfare is waiting for you? Let's hope so. But I do crib about not being nominated. First the Screen Awards nominations came out and I was surprised not to see my name. As an actor, the least you want is to get nominated. I mean all those who've seen the film feel that I've done a good job and at least deserved a nomination. Plus, you want some kind of recognition for a performance which the audiences thought was fantastic. So one day Jitesh Pillai calls me up and invites me to support the Rock On team at the Filmfare. I go there and the next thing I see is my name being called out by Shabana Azmi to honour me for my performance in Rock On. It was a special certificate which was given to me by Filmfare and I was too excited for finally getting some kind of recognition. More so for the fact that it was Javed saab, Shabana ji and Ritesh Sidhwani who gave me the first reactions after watching the film. I remember, after watching the film, Ritesh comes up to me and pats my back, "Surprise package, surprise package." What's the turn on for you when you act? I've sat down and thought about this for quite some time now as to what do I love doing most - hosting shows or acting? The answer is acting because it's the instant appreciation you get from the person who is directing you. When you get something and you feel it in your heart that this is the emotional scene you need to perform, right away, the director approaches you saying that he loved it and it came across so well. That's what I like about acting and that feeling is just so beautiful. That's what turns me on. There are times when I feel that I could've given more to the scene and that in itself is the growth of an actor. When you're playing a host, it stagnates because everyday you're being yourself. When you're playing a character, you're doing it as somebody else each time and with somebody else, whether it's your co-actor or a director. I remember, after watching Rock On, Ritesh Sidhwani came to me and patted my back, saying "Surprise package, surprise package." There has not been a better feeling for me when I tried singing 'I will survive'. The only problem was that no girls pat on my bum. You like bending your own rules, don't you? (Laughs) I think I'm able to try very easily. I don't restrict myself too much. The societal ways of bending the rules would be in films like My Brother Nikhil, Awarapan and Rock On. Whatever Gattu had written in the script, is what you see in the film. 'I will survive' is one of the very rare occurrences that weren't in the script. Having said that, Prachi's song 'Ajeeb dastaan hain yeh' was in the draft. Now the question which was troubling Gattu was, how does Prachi get the mike. The whole party sequence was shot in Film City in three days. The first day while I was driving, Gattu calls me and says, "Tu 'I will survive' gaana gayega kya?" I said, "Yeah man, let's do it. It sounds amazing yaar". I came on the sets wanting to sing the song which every girl enjoys. The good thing is that all the junior artists who were enjoying the song in the film knew the song. So they added more fun and all started having a great time. Koel spanking me wasn't planned. It just happened because it was instinctive. For me, these are moments I'll always cherish. Do producers and directors still offer you roles with an image of a VJ in their mind? Yes they do, and that's what I come with, isn't it? That's great but it also restricts me to a certain extent where there are some roles that they don't look at me at all, and that's what I am trying to break out of. I am focusing in the same path right now. Me and my agent are doing exactly that but my being a VJ has its pros and cons. You're doing Rajat Kapoor's A Rectangular Love Story. You cornered? (Laughs) The film is Rajat's take on a love story which has four corners. There is Gul Panag, Ranvir Shorey, me and Neil Bhopalam. We are the four corners. The film is really on a thread and even if you know a little here and there, there won't be any surprises left. But it's not a regular love story and not a slapstick humour. It is situational and crazy. Do you think this film will add more punch to your career after the recent success of Rock On at all major award functions I don't know. Films like A Rectangular Love Story, Rangeen, etc are films I had said Yes to before Rock On released. Not that I would've not said Yes to them. They are fantastic films. I still stand by them. After Rock On, people expect a certain performance coming out of you, something better. All my fans on Facebook keep asking me the same question after Rock On - What next? Such is the market. At one level, it feels great that people are wanting more out of me but at the other level, I think, I better watch out what I'm doing now because I really don't want to disappoint my fans. That is there at the back of my mind. How has Rangeen shaped up for you? Again, Rangeen is an ensemble cast film. It has Tisca Chopra, Rajat Kapoor, Tara Shamra, me opposite Koel Puri and Manurishi who won the best writer for Oye Lucky Lucky Oye at the Filmfare this year, he is acting. It's a Sharat Kataria film who is to debut as a director with Rangeen. He is the same guy who has written Bheja Fry, though it was an adaptation. He has a potential of being a big director in Bollywood as he has really got everything in place. From the first time I read the script to my last scene I performed, I was completely convinced. In fact, Gattu has got the similar kind of emotions in Rock On as he did in his first film Aryan. The same sentiments are there in Sharat. Which areas are still left unexplored by you? I am hoping to do an action film but nobody is giving it to me (laughs). I am good at intense emotion but I'll be equally good in action. I am confident. I think there can be a stronger intense emotion coming out of an action flick if someone dares to make it. I liked the raw action in Ghajini. I love watching all Ram Gopal Varma films because his action films are a work of a genius. Sanjay Gupta too has some good caliber for action and then Sanjay Gadhvi does some good stuntly action films. Now this can be bizarre but that minuscule action in Aditya Chopra's DDLJ in the end was great. It was a nice action sequence. Hear me out guys and bring it on! Quiz: How well do you know Purab Kohli

John Abraham and the 'Boys in Blue' gear up to play cricket

Cricket Fever has caught on big time thanks to the on-going IPL frenzy and hence it comes as no surprise to see some Bollywood filmmakers cashing in on the popularity of the sport which is almost a religion in India. UTV Motion Pictures' forthcoming film Hook Ya Crook is one such film that has cricket as the backdrop. The film, directed by the David Dhawan, has John Abraham, Genelia D'souza, Kay Kay Menon and Shreyas Talpade in lead roles. The film is set in a prison and revolves around a cricket match played among the inmates. With David at the helm of things, this one promises to be a complete entertainer. Also it would be interesting to see the fresh pairing of John and Genelia for the first time on the big screen. Majority of the film has been shot at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. The supporting cast includes talented actors like Pavan Malhotra, Murli Sharma, Krishna and Sharad Kapoor (who would be seen making a comeback of sorts after a really long time). John who impressed one and all with his football skills in Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal will showcase his cricket skills this time in Hook Ya Crook. If the buzz is to be believed, then John's good friend and captain of the Indian Cricket Team M.S. Dhoni is also slated to make a guest appearance in this film. With such an impressive star cast and an interesting premise, Hook Ya Crook is certainly among the most awaited films of this year. Quiz: Bollywood's cricketing history
