The Soundtrack: “Lisztomania” By Phoenix

Wolfgang Amadeus PhoenixTonight's show featured the song "Lisztomania" by Phoenix. This band took over Saturday Night Live two weeks ago, playing a bonus third song. Not even the Jonas Brothers get that kind of treatment. Their new album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is already a strong contender for best album name of the year, but it also happens to full of fun, rocking tunes that can easily liven your next backyard fiesta when it comes out in May. The first two singles, "Lisztomania" and "1901," are the kind of addicting tunes that make you start dancing or air-drumming in public without even realizing. "Fences" is a springy, ambient jam in the vein of MGMT's "Kids." Songs like "Rome" and "Countdown" build from mellow tune to full-bodied rock out. This album is definitely worth picking up, because there is a good chance you'll be hearing it all summer anyway. My favorite part about Phoenix is that they are French but they had the common decency to sing their songs in English. Having studied Spanish in high school, I'm glad I can listen to this album without feeling left out. I've always said rock music sounds best in the Queen's English. "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" hits stores May 26th. Check out the video for "Lisztomania" after the jump.
For more from Phoenix, check out their official website.

Should Susan Boyle Get a Makeover?

Susan Boyle has proved that we are all more superficial than we thought. When she stepped onto the stage for Britain's Got Talent, before she even spoke a word, we all expected her to make a supreme fool of herself, judging solely by the way she looked. But by now you know how beautifully she sang, and perhaps that her performance has been viewed on YouTube 20 million times and she has received an invitation to appear on Oprah. But because we are all so superficial, the nagging issue of her appearance remains. Tom Leonard writes in the Telegraph:

I don’t think the highlighted, dazzling dentures brigade on US TV have quite got the point about Susan Boyle’s huge popularity — that for many people, it’s a two fingers up to television’s obsession with physical appearance.

CBS conducted the most cringeingly condescending interview with Susan in which the male host evidently thought he had to talk very slowly and stick to questions like “Do you understand you’re a worldwide star?”. Diane Sawyer, anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, was arguably even more patronising.

Did Susan know that America’s Got Talent winners get a makeover, she asked her. Would she perhaps be coming to the US with blonde hair and wearing red leather, she followed up.

Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden is trying to protect Boyle against a makeover. She tells the Mirror:

“I won’t let Simon Cowell take her to his dentist and I certainly won’t let her near his hairdresser.

“She needs to stay exactly as she is because that’s the reason we love her. She just looks like anybody who could live on your street.

“The minute we turn her into a glamour-puss is when it’s spoilt. That can perhaps come later when she’s signed the album deal and conquered America.

“For now we’ll keep her exactly as she is because that’s why we’ve all fallen in love with her. I think it’s the underdog thing. It’s somebody who’s looked after her mother all her life. She’s had real dreams, real aspirations and obviously she thought she’d had to say goodbye to those things.”

It seems inevitable that Boyle will receive a makeover, whatever happens to her — a record deal, the cover of O, a jewelry line (what reality-TV star doesn't have one?). But what if she didn't? What if we accepted that not all famous people have to be stuffed into Spanx and plucked and whitened and highlighted and buffed and blinged and laden with makeup? What if we didn't try to turn her into Madonna? Can we let her remain famous just as she is? Boyle didn't accept the inevitable, so why should we?

Baby Anderson Cooper Lives at Kips Bay Show House

The Salander-O’Reilly Galleries entered bankruptcy last year, but its massive townhouse at 22 East 71st Street — this year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House — is as grand as ever. More than 30 designers, including Bunny Williams and Charlotte Moss, turned 22,000 square feet into a hive of beautiful rooms created with everything from gas masks to grass. Our favorite is the Gloria Vanderbilt room with cute baby photos of Anderson Cooper. Watch the video and then tour the house today through May 17. You’re much more likely to have the $30 it costs to visit than the $75 million it costs to own it.

Week in Review: Tweets Across America

What a week! Was it just us, or did nothing of any real consequence happen in the world of entertainment this week? Regardless, it's time for us to take a look back at the week that was.

• In the biggest thing to happen to our country since the election of Barack Obama, Ashton Kutcher was named King of the Twitterverse when he became the first human to cross the million-follower barrier. Meanwhile, irate movie bloggers got pissed at Paul Scheer for ruining the sancity of the Crank 2 filmgoing experience with his live tweets.

• Speaking of Barry O, he unwittingly inspired 50 Cent to take his beef with Rick Ross to the Internets. On a related note, other famous people who spent time hating on each other this week were Jamie Foxx and Miley Cyrus and David Letterman and Jay Leno.

• But not all famous people were tossing back Haterade this week. In fact, some celebs actually spent some time palling around. Like, for instance, Diddy chilled with an Artic Monkey, Leonardo DiCaprio warned Zac Efron to stay off smack, and Kanye had a threesome with Jared Leto and Brandon Flowers.

• Amazon.com found itself embroiled in a gay-washing controversy (that may or may not have been caused by a hacker). Weirdly enough, when the clock struck Tuesday, no one really seemed to care anymore.

• Observation: Dumb people won't like State of Play, but smart people don't like Crash.

• Seeing how no one got kicked off Idol this week, it's kind of like the week never happened. Unfortunately for us and Quentin Tarantino's stylist, it did. Hey, at least we got to see some new Inglorious Basterds footage!

• Robert Downey Jr. got his feathers ruffled at a press conference for The Soloist. Our own David Edelstein had some thoughts on the matter.

• In local news, crime is sure to drop once Jack Bauer gets to town, and angels battled demons.

• Lots of trailers made their way online: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Girlfriend Experience, The Hurt Locker, and Antichrist.

• And here's a bunch of stuff we liked that we couldn't find a way to thematically tie together! Pirates walked the plank, gerunds made for a risky investment, Billy Corgan did spoken-word, the Observer showed up everywhere, 90210 was a Pepper, Casey Wilson got some face time, the Kid Whisperer rummaged through your children's drawers, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs surprised us.

Until Monday!

The Trailer for Chooch Arriveth

The IMDb description of Chooch, the film that car czar Steven Rattner allegedly financed in order to help his Quadrangle investment group win the right to manage massive state pension funds, did not do this film justice. From the trailer alone, we can tell that Rattner did nothing wrong in producing this film, for he was just trying to bring cinema to the people. And whoever the actor is who uttered the line, "I'm being tortured in a Mexican prison, and you're sleeping with a hooker!" he is the one who was robbed, because he deserves an award. Two thumbs up! Enjoy.

Jason Wu’s Family Finally Understands What He Does for a Living

You know how the world had no clue what Jason Wu did for a living until he started dressing Michelle Obama? Well, it turns out that his family was pretty clueless, too. "I have a really kooky family," said Wu on April 14 at the premiere of Grey Gardens. "My dad has nine sisters and they're always like, 'Jason, why don't you become a lawyer? Jason, why don't you become a doctor?' They all have their ideas." Thanks to the dress, though, that's changed. "Now it's different," he said. "Now they're like, 'Oh, I finally understand what you do.'"

And even though half of what he seems to do these days is answer endless questions about Michelle Obama, Wu admitted he hadn't done his due diligence on Bo the dog. "To be honest with you, I don't know much about dogs." He hadn't even done enough Internet research to comment on Bo's homecoming outfit. "I didn't see it!" he said. "I just saw a little picture of his face. He's cute." Wu's date, Hilary Rhoda filled him in. "He wore a lei. It was very colorful, festive." Wu formed a mental picture and grinned. "Oooh. Chic like the First Lady. I like that."

Oprah Tweeted, and the World’s Largest Newsprint Maker Filed for Bankruptcy

Today in Chicago, Oprah tweeted for the first time. "HI TWITTERS," she said. "FEELING REALLY 21st CENTURY!" Meanwhile, elsewhere in the country, several newspapers said good-bye to staff.

• Fashion editors are suffering, and not even just because they're hungry. Yesterday, the Times cut the weekly fashion spreads in its Sunday magazine (T is still going). Today comes news that Hearst cut loose the Houston Chronicle style critic of fifteen years, Clifford Pugh, and offered San Francisco Chronicle fashion editor Sylvia Rubin a buyout, which she accepted. [WWD]

• Media General, which owns the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Tampa Tribune, cut its workforce by nearly 300 jobs the week of March 31 and plans to freeze its pension plan at the end of May. [AP via NYT]

• Movie execs think young people don't read print, which is why they no longer pay for paper ads. [Big Picture/LAT]

• Burdened by both debt and rapidly falling demand for its products, AbitibiBowater (yes, it's really called that), the world’s largest newsprint maker, filed for bankruptcy protection on Thursday. [NYT]

The Streets Tweets New Tracks

This week, in between carrying on conversations about the future of music distribution and the particularities of his shopping habits, Mike Skinner tweeted links to three new tracks. "Trust Me" is our favorite — it hints at the massive intro of his classic album A Grand Don't Come for Free before quickly settling into a summery, De La Soul–indebted groove. The first song, "I Love My Phone," is pretty good, too, although third track "David Hassles" isn't quite up to snuff (to his credit, he did predict it'd be "rubbish"). It doesn't really matter, though, because these tossed-off freebies presumably won't show up on his next album, Computer and Blues. And if you're still disappointed, wait a few days — Skinner's promised three more songs next week. This is practically enough to make us forget his last album.

French Vogue's Emmanuelle Alt ‘Obsessed’ With Michael Jackson

Remember how Michael Jackson stepped out in a fall 2009 ladies' Balmain top this week? Fall 2009 clothes aren't in stores yet, so he'd have to have a connection to obtain it. That connection is reportedly Emmanuelle Alt, the fashion director of French Vogue. According to the Imagist, she is "100% obsessed with Michael Jackson." Also, "Emmanuelle would weep" if Jackson wore Balmain for his comeback concerts. French Vogue is one of the most fashionable magazines in the world — if not the most fashionable. So if its fashion director is "obsessed" with Michael Jackson, that makes him, like, the Svengali of style. But no one said this industry made sense.

The Imagist also hears that the cover shoot Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn were Twittering about also included Arlenis Sosa.

Governor Paterson Will Literally Fight You Over the MTA Bailout

See that look? That's the look of someone you don't want to mess with.

Maybe he's been reinvigorated by his crusade to legalize same-sex marriage. Maybe he's just overexcited about the new gerund-challenged movie Fighting. Either way, it seems Governor Paterson is done being pushed around and dragged down by a do-nothing Senate. Earlier today, at an event to honor Richard Ravitch, the former MTA chairman whose proposal to prevent fare hikes has stalled over objections to tolls on the Harlem and East River bridges, Paterson said that he wanted to find critics of the plan, "and maybe after this event, we'll step outside." He added, cockily, "I do have that visual problem — so that would make it a fair fight." The crowd responded with "loud applause," according to the Post. Whoa, wait a second — is that two days in a row that Paterson has received loud applause? The man is a juggernaut.

Julia Stiles, As You’ve Never Read Her Before

JULIA STILES METS1.jpgJulia Stiles has worn many hats over the years: Actress, Writer, Director, Saver of the Last Dances, and, believe it or not, a friend*. But today ushers in an entirely new hat for Ms. Stiles... that of an old-timey journalist. Because today, Julia was published in, of all things, The Wall Street Journal, expounding on one of her favorite subjects... The New York Mets. Julia headed over to the Mets' new home, Citifield, to report from the stands in her article debut entitled "Making New Memories". Here's what I took away from the piece: 1. That being a Mets fan is still the best underdoggish way to go; and 2. That Julia knows way, waaaaaay more about baseball than I, or anyone, ever thought possible for such a willowy blonde little thing:
Once again, the Yankees are harshing my mellow. When the Mets renovatedJULIA STILES METS.jpg their bullpen by adding J.J. Putz and Frankie Rodriguez, the Yankees had to trump them by snagging ace starter CC Sabathia for a record high, seven-year contract that is more than the Mets' annual payroll. With all the excitement of a new ballpark, now Mets fans are forced to share bragging rights again, as Yankee Stadium is rebuilt for nearly twice as much money, and without the baggage of a bailed-out bank for its name.
(Quoted simply for J.J. Putz.) Anyway, whether you are a fan of baseball or of Julia's... or just a fan of not the Yankees, the article makes for a good read. Also, I found out Julia likes the band Rush... meaning I've got the perfect birthday gift all lined up.

@paulscheer: Spoiler Alert: Gun Enema

@erockappel: Bai Ling is subtitled. And she's speaking English.

@azizansari: A dog just bit a cops duck [sic?] off!

Then, however, a few crotchety movie bloggers who weren't even in the theater caught wind of the tweeting session. Incensed that such an event might irresponsibly encourage other non-famous, less-funny moviegoers to use cell phones during screenings, they spoke out. CHUD's Devin Faraci blasted First Showing's Alex Billington, who was in attendance ("Solemn promise: if I am at a movie where @firstshowing is twittering, I will smash his fucking phone"). And in a character-limit-busting rant worthy of @courtneylover79, Ain't It Cool News' Harry Knowles sounded off:

At the Alamo Drafthouse — if someone were caught twittering, they would be removed from the theater without a refund ... Movie Theaters are places to leave the outside world behind. If there was even one person not a part of that "Twatflix" group — whose experience was less because of annoying lit screens, it damns everyone that did it ... [To Aziz Ansari] Listen — my biggest problem with it is this. Look, you're an incredibly talented and funny man. And look you have over 13,000 followers — lots of impressionable folks that might think it'd be a gas to Twitter during movies. In this case it is a Crank 2, but it could be OBSERVE & REPORT — or any other film — and those lights from those screens could annoy you, me, whoever ... It comes down to the fact that many of these people are people with followings and using your phone to twitter during movies is a disgusting and revolting action. It shows a lack of respect for the very medium that they profess to work in, write about and spend their lives being a part of. And while they did get the back row — others may not be as discreet — and this is something that should not be proud of doing, but to abandon doing.

As for us, we fail to see any harm in a hilarious, seemingly well-organized event. And if Aziz Ansari's 16,000 followers are really so impressionable and vulnerable to the power of suggestion that they'd mistake his tweets for an endorsement of wanton cell-phone use during all movie screenings, then we'd certainly rather have them read about Crank 2 on his Twitter than see it for themselves.

Merce Cunningham Is No Longer ‘Nearly Ninety’

Legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham celebrated his 90th birthday by presiding over the world premiere of his latest piece, “Nearly Ninety,” at BAM. Sonic Youth accompanied the dancers, and before the show, Kim Gordon shared an intimate Merce moment: “Last night we were doing a dress rehearsal, and you know he’s in a wheelchair, and he doesn’t really like, I have a feeling, any of the attention, but he did this very gracious sort of bow in his chair, with his arms out. It was very actually sweet.” At the end of the performance, Cunningham rolled onstage in his chair, and gave that bow — arms out, palms up. There were speeches and acknowledgments and Audra McDonald sang, and then there was a hush as Merce began to speak.

“There are so many people to be grateful to, I’m not going to try,” he said softly, before he told a story about Seattle, where his career began. "I went to the Cornish School of the Arts for two years. It was an incredible experience. At the end of the first year, I went home for the summer to my family in Centralia. One sunny day, I was sitting outside, wishing, frankly, I was back at school, working — I admired it so much. At the same time, behind me, without me being aware of it, my parents were discussing my schooling. My mother was quite worried, because she didn’t see much future in work in the dance.” His audience laughed, and Cunningham continued. “My father said, ‘Listen, that fellow, if he didn’t have that dance game, would be a crook, and chose the other way,” he said to cheers. Afterward, at dinner, Cunningham told us he was actually relieved that the evening, and his birthday, was over. “It’s been very difficult, [and] at the same time, a marvelous experience.”

Opening Ceremony JUST Launched an Online Store

Opening Ceremony just sent us a rather primitive e-mail alerting us to the launch of their online store. Primitive because the flyer in the email didn't even hyperlink to the store (by the way, have you heard of that newfangled thing called Facebook that all the kids are using?). But! Finally, you can purchase OC goods online, including Erin Wasson's entire RVCA collection! Like this $220 "Unknown Legend" vest, so you can "always be the wild one." But they also have those Bless sunglasses we previously ironically gushed over, inspired by Beyoncé's "Diva" video, which, in themselves, entirely make up for the site's selling Erin Wasson's whole line. Go forth and stimulate the economy. [Opening Ceremony]

We wondered: Did someone seriously spend close to $400 to have their favorite porn star's stage name linked forever with both the New York Mets and, more unfortunately, Jackie Robinson? And if so, who? And what other untoward tributes do those 18,000 bricks hide? Socialists? Serial killers? Or even worse, Yankees? Alchemist Mandy Aftel to Open Exhibit on Natural Perfume

Spritzing yourself with perfume usually means you're showering yourself with synthetic materials and artificial aromas. But that wasn't always the case, which is what the new exhibit "Living Perfume" aims to demonstrate when it opens at Henri Bendel tomorrow. Curated by alchemist Mandy Aftel, the exhibit shows a brief history of natural perfumes, a time before imitation scents were even concocted. "Before people cared more about the essences than the finished product," Aftel tells us. "It's more precious and more expensive and people have a different relationship to it. It's just like the difference between slow food and fast food. It's slow scent." The exhibit features artifacts from the last century, like perfume bottles, promotional books, stamps used to make the labels, and natural materials like rose, jasmine, tree resin, and even whale vomit — a highly sought-after material that is ground up and put in Aftel's own line of natural perfumes. Click ahead to preview some of the pieces, with commentary from Mandy herself.

Henri Bendel, 712 Fifth Ave., at 56th St., third fl. (212-247-1100); M–S (10–8), Su (noon–7). April 18–May 11. Free admission.

Oh crap, Panda Sauce, that's what I meant. What did I say? Pizza sauce? Haha, is that even a thing?? What a funny nonsense phrase -- pizza is a food and not an endangered Asian animal, so why would I want to put sauce on it? Let's keep this little blunder between you and me, OK Freshy?

Writer Nelson George Thinks It’s Time to Reevaluate

Name: Nelson George
Age: 51
Neighborhood: Fort Greene, Brooklyn
Occupation: Writer, author of several books including the recent memoir City Kid; director-writer of HBO's Life Support.

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Walt Frazier.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
I have great childhood memories of Nathan's shrimp with tartar sauce at Coney Island, but I think any meal I've had at a Mario Batali restaurant has been remarkable.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I dream, write, and scheme most of the day.

Would you still live here on a $35,000 salary?
Where, pray tell, could I live?

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
Just saw Hair, which was better indoors than the production I saw last summer in Central Park.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
No.

What's your drink?
I rarely drink, but when I do it's usually a tequila shot or mojito.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
I usually eat breakfast at home (oatmeal), but my other two main meals of the day are from delis or restaurants.

What's your favorite medication?
Fugal Foe. Great for my finicky stomach.

What's hanging above your sofa?
A large framed photograph of the Pacific Ocean at dawn (or dusk) given to me by an ex-girlfriend.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
Anything over $50.

When's bedtime?
Anytime between 12:30 and 2 a.m. It used to be 3 a.m., but as I get older the night-owl part of me is receding.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
Depends on when you think "old" is. The Times Square of the early seventies blaxploitation/kung fu movie era had a seedy, yet playful, quality I have good memories of. By the eighties it had lost that charm and was just sliding into the toilet. I worked in the area from '82 to '89, and it got worse every year. I tolerate its current mall qualities and like the upgrades, though the Times building is oppressive.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
I never think of Donald Trump.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
New Yorkers are still dirtier than is necessary. I traveled around the country to six major cities last summer and spent a lot of time in London last year, and have to admit that New Yorkers toss more garbage needlessly to the ground than any group of big-city people I've encountered. If we just held on to our wrappers, cans, and junk a little longer, the city would be 70 percent cleaner.

Who is your mortal enemy?
Don't have any. I just have people I stay away from.

When's the last time you drove a car?
When I was 15, for five minutes.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
There's a lot of anxiety about the future and personal finances that is tangible. I feel bad for folks, but I do think it's time for all of us to reevaluate what "success" means and how we keep score. There are a lot of rich, empty suits in this town who've celebrated while driving the economy into the toxic dump of recession, while [there are also] amazing "poor" folks who get ignored while making the city work.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
Times and the Post. Haven't paid much attention to the News since Jimmy Breslin slowed down.

Where do you go to be alone?
That's what apartments are for. Otherwise you shouldn't expect to be physically alone in New York City. Mentally alone — a Walkman in a busy gym works for that.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
Well, for every New Yorker there are at least five or six crucial doors. There is the door to their residence, their business, their bedroom, their bathroom, and that private door behind which they keep their hidden selves. How they balance their public persona, their family responsibilities, and their hidden, truest selves is what defines them as people and ultimately New Yorkers. The most remarkable people in this city are those not afraid to express that private self (be they writers, community leaders, musicians, dancers) and, in so doing, give all of us a great insight into the human condition. There are many New Yorkers — to me the people who can do that are the truest.

Southland: Jimmy Barrett, Bleeped Swears, and Sh*t!

Ubiquity, thy name is Fischler.

Seeing how Vulture commenters were pretty much split as to whether they enjoyed the series premiere of Southland last week, we decided we'd watch Vulture hero Ben Silverman's latest shot at broadcast-network immortality with our own two eyes last night. And guess what? We found it to be a very watchable (and, at times, mildly riveting) hour of television. That's not meant to damn the show with faint praise, mind you, it's just that we normally loathe the cop-drama format. However, this show has a few things going for it. First off, any show that has the wherewithal to cast Jimmy Barrett (a.k.a. Patrick Fischler) in a supporting role earns a nod of approval from us. Second, we applaud the insanity of the writers to write swear words directly into their scripts, even though they know they're gonna get bleeped when they make it on air (it's kind of like Action in this regard). Third, we're pretty sure that last night's episode was the first time we'd ever seen actual excrement (or, at least, something that looked a lot like shit) on network TV. If you're brave enough, follow along for a NSFW clip.

You sure about this? We warned you. Baby-diaper shit stains coming up!

...
...
...

You've been warned!

Ew!

Meet the New Girl: Dorothea Barth Jörgensen

Stockholm native Dorothea Barth Jörgensen broke into modeling at 16 when she won the Swedish Elite Model Look contest. Now, two years later, she's become a face to watch. After her captivating brown eyes and girl-next-door look landed her an editorial in the Italian magazine Rodeo and the October 2008 cover of Japanese Vision, she went on to have a breakout runway season for fall 2009, booking 44 shows total. She made her runway debut for BCBG Max Azria and walked for top-tier designers in New York (Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler), London (Christopher Kane, Richard Nicoll), and Milan (Burberry, Jil Sander, and Prada). By the end of Paris her rising star status was fully confirmed, as she strutted down the Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Chanel, Lanvin, Karl Lagerfeld, and Dries Van Noten catwalks, and closed the Anne Valerie Hash show. With a breakthrough that strong, a campaign can't be too far in the future.

New Madison Avenue Jeweler Evades a Quick Close

With Tiffany floundering and other high-end jewelers resorting to sales, the recent unveiling of high-end diamond boutique Dalyah on Madison Avenue raised a few eyebrows — including those of the company's own board of directors, apparently. After a much-hyped launch party on March 26, we stopped in a couple of weeks later and were told by designer Dalyah Duek-Flaks that the store would be closing at the end of the month. The board of directors — a group of four international partners that includes Duek-Flak's father, Protea Diamonds head Moshe Duek — were spooked, she said, citing the exorbitant rent (stores on Madison Avenue pay between $1,200 and $1,500 per square foot on average, she says) and lagging sales. "When we signed the lease in August, everything was looking positive," she said, "but within a few weeks, the demons started popping up. The directors were debating whether we should open at all or if it would be better to cut our losses." Dalyah's large diamond and colored-gemstone pieces range from $2,000 to over $100,000. "People were scared to walk in because it's expensive," she sighs.

But when we checked back this week, Duek-Flaks reported that the board has since reconsidered and will allow the store to remain open, a decision partly due to a spate of high-profile press, as well as newly launched discounts on Dalyah's spring cocktail rings. "At this point we just want to get our name out there," says Duek-Flaks. "We've decided to give it shot. They haven't killed me off yet."

Dalyah, 625 Madison Ave., at 58th St.; 212-575-5511.

What Corey Haim Really Wants to Do Is Direct

"I want to direct. Definitely a goal of mine. I want to direct sci-fi, definitely not horror. Horror movies, man, the blood entails so much time. And horror movies are not fun, definitely not starting there as a director. Definitely not horror. I’d like to do something like License to Drive. Maybe some cool animation? I’m just kicking ideas around. I really like dramas, and horror movies are second … well, if I can get past the blood, I’m good to go. Then third, comedy is where it’s at for me, so that’s always number one, but maybe I’ll mix it up and make it a dramedy? And I’ll start directing from there." —Corey Haim on his hopes, dreams, and aspirations [/Film]

"Mass media had no overwhelming reach so I was drawn to the traveling performers passing through. The side show performers — bluegrass singers, the black cowboy with chaps and a lariat doing rope tricks. Miss Europe, Quasimodo, the Bearded Lady, the half-man half-woman, the deformed and the bent, Atlas The Dwarf, the fire-eaters, the teachers and preachers, the blues singers. I remember it like it was yesterday. I got close to some of these people. I learned about dignity from them. Freedom too. Civil rights, human rights. How to stay within yourself." —Bob Dylan on being inspired by sideshow performers [Contact Music]

"I started to think, 'Ok, this guy really likes me.' Like in the Hollywood way where I'm going to be the lead in his next movie. I'm like, he's going to make a movie about aliens who come down and there's a trick ending, and it's gonna be me! We go to the next place, we're hanging out. ... Another hour passes, he goes to the bathroom, he comes back, and then ... I realize it's not M. Night Shyamalan. It's just an Indian guy who looks a lot like M. Night Shyamalan! I hightailed it out of there. I felt dirty." —Matthew Perry on spending an evening with an M. Night Shyamalan look-alike [Contact Music]

"I got really sick, like, right when I got there ... You can see me ... and I was holding in vomit ... I was shaking ... Somebody said, 'Were you crying?'" —Christina Applegate had a visceral reaction when sitting in the audience of American Idol [Contact Music]

"I saw a unicorn with a dildo as a horn, running into a field full of breasts and then I realized someone was videotaping me watching the unicorn and they kept throwing beads at me. It felt kinda rapey, so I left." —Paul Scheer on what happened when he partied with Joe Francis in Las Vegas [Wooooo Magazine]

"It's like if I'm in a pub in London, after about 15 minutes someone may recognise me because they have time to look at my face. But in most cases people wouldn't expect to see me in some small town in Germany or something. If someone's at Auschwitz they're not looking for movie stars." —Viggo Mortensen on the sorts of places an actor can go to be anonymous [Guardian UK]

THE OFFICE: Best Episode Of The Season?

Michael ParmMy roommate and I laughed essentially non-stop at last night's Office episode, beginning with Andy's wedding service offer and continuing through a hilarious (and legitimately engaging) mentor vs apprentice client-war between Michael and Dwight. The episode was just full of wall-to-wall laugh out L worthy lines (I good w/abbreviations), and I just couldn't stop giggling at the Dwight line, "I knew that you would do that -- their meatball parm is their WORST SANDWICH!" Oddly, today I've been talking to some of my other friends who watched it (several of whom has disagreed with my dislike of this episode) who felt differently, that the episode was moderately funny but crappy plot-wise, and I couldn't have disagreed more. The plot was not only plausible but interesting, to see both Michael and Dwight in their element with a clear goal in mind and pride at stake; people have pointed out how the longer run of the American Office has forced the producers to make the Michael Scott character a step above complete incompetence (and actually adept at selling to customers) as opposed to the utterly hopeless David Brent, who simply couldn't have made it four seasons without getting fired. Last night's episode was a perfect realization of this, with the two characters both being good at their respective jobs but believably ridiculous as people, and the color-coded "Orange means ORANGE-you glad you didn't say that?" just capped everything off perfectly. Andy soloAlso, Andy is fast becoming my favorite character, or at least just the surest bet to have funny things happen when he's on the screen. From his "What I Hate About You" roast to his Feist-sugars pickup line to his "moving out of the way" dance last week to his amazing "You Can Call Me Al" a Capella solo this week, he's somehow involved in the funniest moment of the episode every single week. Also also, I love how I always say that I hate analyzing and quantifying comedy and prefer to just watch it, then can't resist getting into lengthy arguments with friends about exactly that then coming here to seek the opinions of our readers. As always, I feel like independently of whether or not we enjoy a given Office episode, the fact that we cannot resist these debates about the characters and their situations is just a ringing endorsement of how legitimately this show has earned our following. Thoughts on last night's Office? Favorite moments? Leave 'em in the comments!

Reuters - There's a lot of singing and dancing in HBO's original movie "Grey Gardens," a lot of beautiful period costumes and hair and a lot of rich, frothy Katharine Hepburn-meets-the-Kennedys accents. There's even a semi-uplifting ending.

"Sit Down" a letdown from "Arrested" creator (Reuters)

Reuters - The problem with Fox's "Sit Down, Shut Up" isn't that it tries to be a meta-comedy that pokes fun at other animated series, riffing on characters' desire for catchphrases, the bleeping of dialogue and the challenge of being "hard to market." No, the problem is that the show just isn't funny.

Review: 'State of Play' may be last of its kind

What is Hollywood going to do without the cynical yet incorruptible investigative reporter, his editor, the banter of the newsroom and the built-in suspense of the deadline? As times get tougher for newsprint journalists, the gripping (if a little anticlimactic) "State of Play" may turn out to be one of the last of its kind.
