Prachi Desai, Ekta Kapoor go shopping to chor bazaar for their next film together

At last Ekta Kapoor's favourite protege Prachi Desai is doing a film for Ekta's Balaji Films. The petite beauty who played Farhan Akhtar's rock steady wife in Rock On is all set to play underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's soul mate Mehjabeen in Milan Luthria's Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. Ekta and Prachi have been catching up on all the video footage that's available on the lady, and they've been hunting for clothes all over. In fact Prachi went all over the Muslim localities of Mumbai last month including Haji Ali to pick up authentic salwar-kameez. Says Prachi, "That's true. I didn't want to get into yet another wife's role after Rock On and Life Partner. Come on, yaar! I'm so young. I want to have fun and I keep getting these serious roles. But playing the don's life partner in Once Upon A Time ... was a challenge that I couldn't resist." The role requires Prachi to look like a Muslim working-class girl in 1975 who gets involved with a don. Prachi put the offer on hold for a month, did her research and then got back to the director. "This character is from a time that existed before me. Yes I've done plenty of reading on my character. I want to look and feel like Mehjabeen. And it's such a challenge. And doing a film with Balaji is like coming home. Shobha Aunty, Jeetu Uncle and Ekta are like family. I remained connected with them when I did Rock On because it was directed by Ekta's cousin Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor). My second film Life Partner has Ekta's brother Tusshar Kapoor as my co-star. And now I'm finally doing a Balaji production." Interestingly, Ekta never offered Mehjabeen's role to Prachi. Says a source close to Ekta, "Ekta would never offer roles to people close to her, whether it's Tusshar or Prachi. She lets the director take a call."

Film producers boycott multiplexes

Producers boycott multiplexes. Here's bringing you their reaction to the ongoing strike Farhan Akhtar: "We make films for the viewers and do realize that this deadlock between producers and distributors may be inconvenience to them. Therefore every member of our association the United Producers & Distributors Association (UPDA) felt it most important that cinegoers should be informed of our grievances with the multiplexes. Cinegoers should understand that producers and distributors are justified in their stand. What we seek will also benefit cinegoers." Subhash Ghai: "On 7th April, I was very proud to see the solidarity within our fraternity. They made their point with so much dignity. I hope a solution is found so that both the producers and multiplexes are able to share the benefits. We should not forget that it's finally one industry." Ritesh Sidhwani: "The united forum for producers is one of the best things to have happened to us. I feel tackling the multiplex solution is now so much easier since we've come together as one united body for the first time. In fact the next project for the UPDA is to combat piracy. And we intend to go at it full-throttle by first banning the illegal screening of new releases on cable television. But first we hope to come to a semblance of solution about the multiplexes in the next couple of days." Mahesh Bhatt: "The coming together of the fraternity in spite of the differences within is our greatest achievement. It has silenced the cynics who said that the film industry is an army of generals who can never join hands to take on these bullies. The road ahead is hard. But there's a do or die resolve within our fraternity. It will carve a happy ending." Anubhav Sinha: "The biggest achievement of the UPDA meeting is the collective and clear communication of the areas of discussion from one side of the table. There're three parties to the whole debate. The manufacturer, the retail outlets and the end- users. Unfortunately the end-user remained oblivious to the whole issue. If nothing, this meeting will persuade all the 3 parties to the same table. The 3 parties are inter-dependent and a solution is bound to offer itself soon." Sanjay Gupta: "The UPDA meeting on Tuesday achieved a never-before show of solidarity among the fraternity. The multiplex owners have no choice but to agree to our demands which are just and correct. The solution finally is delayed and not denied" Pritish Nandy: "A solution is inevitable and will happen soon. Both sides have time on their hands now, what with the IPL and elections both of which will grab increasing mindshare in the coming weeks. After that the pressure to hammer out an equitable and responsible solution will be immense on both sides. The yin cannot kill the yang." Madhu Mantena: "I think after a long time we were able to send a message across that as a collective industry we stand united on the issue. As both the movie making and multiplex industries are interdependent, a quick solution is inevitable. When multiplexes were incepted with Fame Adlabs, we were on the same revenue-share wave-length that producers are asking for now. So I don't think it's unreasonable for the multiplexes to agree to our demands. This Friday-to-Friday haggling between producers and multiplex owners has to stop." Satish Kaushik: "Though I was not present in the meeting that gathering showed the solidarity among producers. No solution has come yet. But it would have to for the sake of the audience. Everyone is a little relaxed right now because of the IPL." Vipul Shah: "Unless you take a stand a crisis cannot be resolved. I think a message has been sent out loud and clear that we producers are united on the multiplex issue. This is the acid test for the UPDA. Unity is the essence. And we have it." Goldie Behl: "That we producers have come together for once is in itself an achievement. A solution is inevitable because neither industry can survive without the other. The producers have an alternate means of exhibition. But the multiplexes have no choice." Madhur Bhandarkar: "Unity among the producers was a clear achievement. The crisis has to end soon. The multiplexes have to agree to the new profit- sharing formula." Suneel Darshan: "The meeting on Tuesday achieved high TRPs for the channels, great visuals of Shah Rukh and Aamir together, and nothing much else. Such serious issues are better discussed behind closed doors." Bhushan Kumar: "I leave it to a dependable spokesperson like Karan Johar to speak on the issue. But we all want this crisis to be resolved as soon as possible." Abbas Tyrewala: "I think the meeting was aimed more at the public opinion, so that the viewers don't start resenting filmmakers and stars for starving them of entertainment. The negotiations with the multiplexes will not be easy- they have to essentially agree to, making half the money that they've grown used to making. Put in that situation, who can think straight? Regardless of the childishly simple logic of the producers- how can you make money on our films while we loose? (At some stage they'll have to turn that logic on stars too). I think the producers winning out is inevitable, unless they cant hang in for the long haul and those with impending releases force a softening of their stance."

Arshad Warsi's film dares to release amidst multiplexes v/s producers stand off

Even though bigwigs like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan are coming together in their stand with the producers, there are some filmmakers who are defying the strike and going ahead with the release of their films. One such film is Arshad Warsi starrer Ek Se Bure Do which is silently arriving in theaters (including multiplexes) this Friday i.e. 10th April in spite of majority of Bollywood fraternity choosing to do otherwise. However, it isn't too much of a worrying thought though. The film belongs to 'stuck in the cans' variety and was actually launched 5 years back. There has been no promotion of the film during its making and is now seeing a near 'dead' release due to scarcity of releases in multiplexes. Even though everyone associated with the film would know that it's a loose-loose situation for all, they are rightly going ahead with the release to get rid of some backlog. The film sees Arshad Warsi as a hero along with Rajpal Yadav who plays the second lead in the film. A comedy, it stars Natassha as the female lead whose last major release as a heroine was Koi Aap Sa (2005). Ever since then she has appeared in only film, Just Married, and that too featured her only in a cameo. The other female lead of the film is Tusha who makes her debut with the film. In a way, release of this film would be a relief for Arshad Warsi who has moved into A-grade films in the years gone by. Ek Se Bure Do is the second in line for an old film of Arshad to be hitting the screens. A few weeks back it was Kisse Pyaar Karoon that had arrived and disappeared in a matter of a single week. That film too was years in the making and was a 'let's get this one out of the way' release. Coming to Ek Se Bure Do, the film boasts of a heavy supporting cast comprising of actors like Govind Namdeo, Yashpal Sharma, Virendra Saxena, Vijay Raaz and Razzak Khan. In fact the biggest draw for the film could be well through an item number that has been picturised on aiming-at-being-an-item-girl Brinda Parekh whose claim to fame has been a short appearance in Madhur Bhandarkar's Corporate. However, the song (which also features Arshad Warsi) hasn't been promoted at all; something that has hardly helped the film's cause. Produced by Suresh Seth, Ek Se Bure Do is directed by Tarique for whom this will be his first venture behind the camera. Arriving with zero publicity, the film would be lucky to survive a single weekend at theaters! For Arshad though, it could well translate into good news. With Kisse Pyaar Karoon and now Ek Se Bure Do being finally out of his way, he would certainly be hoping that his other stuck films like Jeetenge Hum and Zamaanat are released soon as well and clear his backlog releases.

Bollywood disasters - Let's not blame the multiplexes

Yesterday, a journo friend of mine asked me an interesting question: "Do you think high ticket rates at multiplexes are hampering poor foot-falls, especially in 2009 when the biggest money spinners have ironically been flops like Delhi 6 and Chandni Chowk To China?" Well, without really getting into any pause or a debate, my instant answer was NO. The fact is simple - Films are flopping because they are plain bad. Period. Except for may be a stray Luck By Chance which flopped this year in spite of being a well made film, each of the other duds have turned out to be so because of poor content. Let's get back to the multiplex question now. Frankly, in the current times, if not for multiplexes, how many of us would dare to enter a single screen theater, especially the ones that are standing from pre-historic times. A select few are renovated with the passage of time but most of the single screen theaters across the country still suffer from pigeons flying across the screen, shabby corridors, stinky restrooms, poor quality popcorn, unruly parking attendants, disinterested box office attendant, poor sound quality, uneasy chairs, hazy projection and in nutshell an unsatisfying movie watching experience. It has been due to multiplexes that family audiences as well as yuppy crowds have at least started making it a ritual to visit multiplexes every week, provided (and it's a big 'provided' here) the movie is worth a watch. Yes, ticket rates have gone up to Rs. 200/250/300 here which makes one think twice before shelling out such amount of money, but then if a film is exciting enough, they don't mind it either. So if a 8X10 Tasveer flops and (most likely) sees itself folding up with collections less than that of Dev D, it's not the multiplex rates that are a deterrent, it's the movie itself. Because if that was not the case, films like A Wednesday, Phoonk, 1920, Welcome To Sajjanpur, Mumbai Meri Jaan and Aamir (all of which released last year) wouldn't have been able to find any audience and turn into box office successes. Why am I bringing these films into picture here? Because not a single one of them on the face value gave any hint of succeeding at the box office when their release date was announced. It was the audience that lapped up to these films and reached out to multiplexes (with the same high ticket rates as have been applicable for any other biggie) to make these films a success. So the question is, when these films didn't suffer from lack of audience in multiplexes, why are Chandni Chowk To China, Delhi 6, Billu Barber, 8X10 Tasveer and a dozen odd medium budget films not seeing an audience turnout? Well, the answer lies in the write-up above! Another logic that is floating around is 'recession'! In fact Karzzzz was one of the first films in last six months that had this excuse being coined for the film's failure. It has been said ever since then that audience is not interested in watching movies anymore because they are spending money wisely. So yes, 'wisely' is the keyword here. Money is being spent carefully but it isn't like movies are not being watched at all. Ever since the release of Karzzzz and the months gone by, recession has only worsened further. But then in the same phase, we have seen movies like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Ghajini turning into monster blockbusters and that too by arriving almost together at the box office. Fashion and Golmaal Returns too were money spinners and so has been Raaz - The Mystery Continues this year. If a film has been good, it has worked. Period. And let's not even say that the aforementioned names were guaranteed successes due to big names involved. After all we have seen big names failing to even bring in face saving collections over the months gone by. Hence, there is nothing like a sure-shot 'opening' mantra! Point in simple. Let's stop blaming multiplexes and recession as the reason behind Bollywood seeing its worst time at the box office at least in this decade. If films are good, die hard movie buffs as well as 'aam junta' looking for their weekly dose of entertainment would be willing to shell out money at multiplexes even in current times. In fact why look too much in future? Come May and we may as well see Akshay Kumar himself having the last laugh with Kambakkth Ishq arriving on 29th (tentative). Hopefully, then we won't have to build any excuse and the film would turn out to be success across multiplexes as well as single screens!
