Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 6 Apr 2009 | 9:36 am "Even after a decade, I am considered a newcomer" - MadhavanMadhavan has been around for close to a decade and has been slowly but steadily making his presence felt in Bollywood. However, one question that he continues to answer is around his presence in solo lead films. Not that he minds answering that because he believes that even after a decade, he is still considered a newcomer. Release of 13B has made at least one man really happy - Madhavan. While the film has been a super hit in its Tamil version down South, even the Hindi version hasn't done bad and has turned out to be the highest grosser for a Madhavan solo. Over the years, Madhavan has worked as a sole lead in two films - Rehnna Hai Terre Dil Mein (Saif Ali Khan was only in a special appearance) and Ramji Londonwaale. The former which had Madhavan pairing up with Dia Mirza didn't do much in theaters, though it has been a favorite on satellite and DVD viewing more than seven years after its release. As for Ramji Londonwaale, it was a well made movie but went on to be a box office failure due to poor promotion and release strategy. "Well, I have been busy with my multi starrers though and have been getting good success over the years", quips Madhavan who will be seen in at least two more multi starrers this year - Sikandar (where he plays an Army officer) and 3 Idiots (where he would be seen with Aamir Khan). "I have to be pretty selective about my films since I have my own market down South to take care of. I can't let my audience there down by working in any run of the mill film in Bollywood", he reasons. After doing films like Rang De Basanti, Guru and Mumbai Meri Jaan, all of which found him getting good critical acclaim and were also successful commercially, isn't it pinching for him when it comes to being better placed in the industry? "If you say so, I will take that as a back handed compliment", says Madhavan with that boyish grin of his, "I have been here for close to a decade now and I am still asked this question that I should launch myself in an author backed role." He adds, "Actually, it's quite fantastic because while so many actors have come and gone in the years gone by, I am still around. While majority have burnt out, I am still happy, smiling and very much available for the makers who want to do some good work with me." "For someone who has been around for a decade now, I am still considered a newcomer who (as per some out there) deserves a re-launch. Now isn't that phenomenal", concludes Madhavan with a question for Bollywood which is forever searching for a quality actor who could pull in mass as well as class audience.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 6 Apr 2009 | 9:35 am "Saif and I will be smoldering-hot in Agent Vinod" - Kareena KapoorDownload image as wallpaper Now that Kareena Kapoor is finally going to be part of Saif Ali Khan's production plans, no stone is being left unturned to ensure her presence is justified in the Khan-produced venture. Apparently, in the beginning, the leading lady's role in Agent Vinod was relatively less substantial than Saif's. Says a source, "In fact Kareena wasn't sure she wanted to do Agent Vinod because the title clearly indicated whom the film belonged to. But Saif convinced Kareena that her role would be on a par with his. Then he convinced Sriram with whom Saif has a deep rapport since they did Ek Hasina Thi together, to make sure Kareena's presence in the film is justified." Quiz Kareena about this, and she laughs, "Do you think I'd agree to be part of the film if my role was not as exciting as Saif's? I mean, can you imagine what would happen? Saif and I will be smoldering-hot in Agent Vinod. Even the posters will be designed to highlight us as the coolest hot pair." Clearly, after Rensil D'Silva's terrorist drama in which Saif and Kareena look and act very real, the pair is in no mood to get into the authentic space once again. But here's where the problem sets in. While Kareena and Saif are looking to do a high-gloss big-budget espionage thriller, director Sriram Raghavan is looking at making a gritty life-like spy drama. Says Raghavan, "I grew up watching those really filmy spy films like Farz, Aankhen, Yakeen and of course the Rajshris' Agent Vinod. I've been fascinated by the genre. However, times have changed and so have definitions of espionage. My film will occupy a more real space." He admits his spy drama will be more in the mood of Mani Shankar's recent Mukhbir than the old Agent Vinod. At the same time Raghavan admits the high budget of the new-age Agent Vinod forbids any over experimentation, "I've never worked on this kind of a budget before. And I can't afford to be experimental. The market has to be kept in mind. So there will be music and songs. But no lip sync songs." With Saif wanting to be Tom Cruise and Kareena looking as hot as Nicole Kidman in his arms, Sriram Raghavan could be heading for more excitement than he bargained for when he starts shooting in July.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 6 Apr 2009 | 9:20 am Bipasha at Kolkata Fashion Week - IBNLive.com

Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 6 Apr 2009 | 8:15 am "Salman knelt and proposed to me in front of the Eiffel Tower" - AsinDownload image as wallpaper She's basking in well-deserved success after Ghajini. In between shooting a song for London Dreams and doing commercials, Asin, looking fresh as a daisy in casual tee and trousers, opens up in an exclusive chat How is life post-Ghajini? You are flooded with endorsements now. Life is pretty much the same. As for endorsements, I have been doing ads since the age of 14. So far, I have done around 50 ads including Parachute, BPL Mobile, Mirinda and Colgate. Most of the commercials you are seeing now have been signed much before Ghajini happened. But didn't you sign Tata Sky after Ghajini and after Aamir Khan became its brand ambassador? Not at all. My ads are already on in the South and they are planning to shoot another with Aamir soon. Now that you have tasted success with both the Ghajini's, which is more special? Both. I was excited when the Tamil film came about. I had done a few films till then but Ghajini was a huge success. It was the highest-watched regional film in that year (2005). A huge box-office success, it even caught Bollywood's attention. As for the Hindi version, when I was shooting for it, it was like watching a re-run of your film but I was equally enthused working in it. I have been told the film is the highest grosser ever in Hindi. Screen gave me the Most Promising Newcomer award and I got my first national recognition. Do you get mobbed in Mumbai? I think people in Mumbai are really cool. When they see me, they wave out or greet me with a Hi or a Hello. It feels nice. But when I was shooting for London Dreams in Chandigarh, I got a taste of North India. I had never been there before and though I stayed there only for a day I enjoyed it. The crowd was encouraging and kept calling out my name. If I didn't respond to Asin, they would resort to Kalpana (her name in Ghajini). I loved the food there, specially the aloo parathas. Are you not afraid of putting on weight? Not at all. I believe in eating healthy food. My mother is a doctor and she has always encouraged me to eat right and live a healthy life. Whenever I get time, I work-out and do cardio exercises. I am not interested in being a size zero. What difference do you find between the Mumbai and the South film industries? The South industry has a lot more sense of punctuality. They start early and wrap up by a particular time. I am used to that and make it a point to be on time for a shoot or an event. People tell me I shouldn't be on time and that it's an 'in' thing to be fashionably late. In Ghajini, the entire unit was from the South, so in that sense there was no difference. London Dreams is the first complete Bollywood unit I am working with. Most of the film has been shot in London and Paris and it was a good experience. Each of us got a bound script, besides the shoot schedule including the sunrise, sunset, weather forecast, temperature, site -map of the location, reporting time etc. For the first time, I was introduced to the concept of ADs (assistant directors) with walkie-talkies on the sets of Ghajini. It was odd to hear them telling each other 'loading Kalpana on the set', 'walking Kalpana' etc.' I used to tell them I am not a thing to be adressed like that! How did London Dreams come about? It was when I was shooting for Ghajini that I got a call from Vipul Shah. I got a script narration, liked my role and agreed to be a part of it. It is a relationship-based musical film. I am looking forward to it. What is your role like? I play Priya, a London-based girl of Indian origin. She is part of a music band, which has Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan as the lead singers. We've heard that you sport two distinct looks in the film. Yes, Priya acts like a paawan (innocent) traditional South Indian girl at home in front of her parents wearing only chudidars and salwars. But when she steps out, she switches over to strappy, short outfits and hot pants, the kind a London girl wears. Unlike Kalpana of Ghajini who wore clothes picked up from the streets in Bandra, since she was shown to be a lower middle-class girl, Priya's outfits have been brought in London. There were reports that you weren't happy with the outfits given by your designer in London Dreams. There's not an iota of truth in that report. Ashley Rebello is the designer and I had no problems with him. In fact, I have never stated my preferences for any of my movies. The director decides the kind of look he wants and conveys it to the designer. If the director is not satisfied how can I be blamed? Between Kalpana and Priya, who is closer to you? Oh! That's difficult to say. But I think I identify with Priya more. I had fun shooting for the film as the two newcomers Ranvijay and Aditya are closer to my age. We are all part of a music band in the film but we became good friends in real life too. Ranvijay is cool and Aditya is sweet. What about your heroes, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan? Salman is chilled-out. I like his attitude. With him what you see is what you get. Ajay Devgan was a revelation. I thought he was this serious, reserved type of guy but he turned out to be quite a prankster. He's witty and is a complete entertainment on the sets. He used to come up with this tongue-twisters in Hindi like oont ki peeth oonchi, oonchi poonch oont ki. And I would retort with some of the old Hindi one-line tongue-twisters that I know. So, did he play any pranks on you? Yes, he tried, but it fell flat on his face. (Laughs) During a shoot in London, when I was sitting in my caravan, two guys who were around 7 feet tall and of African origin started yelling at me. They asked me to come out of the caravan and started banging on it. Something told me this couldn't be happening. After they were through I calmly asked them to get out. Then, I saw Vipul (Shah) and Ajay standing with a camera filming the entire scene! Vipul was disappointed that I hadn't given a single reaction. Tell us about the scene where Salman proposes to you. That picture of Salman kneeling and proposing in front of the Eiffel Tower was splashed everywhere. We were shooting a song in Paris near the De Luvre Museum. A wacky song, which goes Man ko adhik bhave saiyyas, dil taa taa thaiyaa, haaye re has Salman wooing me and at the end of the song he proposes to me. It was freezing in the nights with chilly winds. But the song is so funny, it was great shooting for it. Ghajini's producer Madhu Mantena has said that he has cancelled the three-film contract with you because of your attitude? Let me clarify that I never sign any contract deals with producers. So, there's no question of him cancelling it. In fact, the day the report came in the paper, he called me to tell me not to believe whatever has been written. I must say that compared to the media in the South, the press here cooks up stories without any clarifications. I have decided not to react to these reports. You refused a Priyadarshan film co-starring Akshay Kumar. In fact, you haven't signed any Hindi films apart from London Dreams. (Cuts in) I would love to work with Priyan, I have grown up on his films in Malayalam. And he has offered me films in the past too. I have refused them for different reasons. For me, the most important things are the script, my character, the director, the producer and co-artiste, in that order. I try for the best combination and I am lucky to have worked with the cream of the cream. I can afford to wait. I don't want to be repetitious in my roles. It's being said that you are charging a high price of around a crore and a half. Money is not a criteria. I don't have any financial pressures. I want to enjoy what I am doing. Like Bharatbala's 19 Steps? Yes. It is a Walt Disney production to be made in Tamil and Japanese. It is about a Samurai warrior who comes to Kerala to learn Kalaripayattu, the mother of all martial arts. The film stars Tadanov Asano, a Hollywood Japanese actor. Kamal Hassan plays the male lead. I can't reveal much about the role as we haven't even started shooting for it. It is to be shot in Kerala and Japan. I will be leaving for Kerala soon to learn Kalaripayattu. I am a trained classical dancer but I need to learn the body language of a trained Kalari. However, it is quite risky and many are known to get seriously injured while training. My mother is very apprehensive and is asking if it's a must to learn it! Are you doing any Malayalam film? No. I was offered four films but I am not doing any. Is it because you want to establish yourself in Bollywood now? No. I am open to doing any film, language is not a barrier. But as I told you I can afford to wait for a good role. But your competitors may race ahead.. I want to concentrate on my career and not look at what others are doing or not doing. I am raw in films, I have neither taken acting classes nor have I assisted directors. Whatever I have learnt is on-the-job. I was 14 years old studying in the ninth grade when people told me I had a photogenic face and should try modelling. One thing led to another and I made my film debut in a Malayalam film Narendran Magan. It did average business, but my second film Amma, Nana, O Tamila Ammayi in Telugu was a big hit and I made it. Screen IndiaSource: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 6 Apr 2009 | 7:11 am 'I miss those life-changing lyrics!' - A R RahmanHe has proved that music may have languages but not boundaries. Here's the reticent A.R.Rahman, who has left no award unturned in the last six months, in a midnight chat from Chennai that brims with rare candour For two years in succession, you have clinched both the Best Music and Best Background Music Screen trophies. What do you have to say about this unique achievement? I always feel that nothing can be planned, and sometimes things just fall into place! Just a few years ago, a lot of things seemed to be going off-track. Mani Ratnam's Lajjo, Shyam Benegal's Chamki and Krishna Shah's Baiju and one or two other musicals were wonderful subjects that inspired me then - and none of them even took off! On the other hand, Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na that got me your Best Music trophy this year was almost shelved - till Aamir Khan took over its production. Last year, a lot of my films came all together - Jaane Tu..., Jodhaa Akbar, Yuvvraaj, the music of Ada, Ghajini and then Slumdog Millionaire. So I have stopped expecting anything in life. If good things happen, it's okay, but if they don't, at least you are not frustrated! (Laughs). Do two background music trophies indicate that the background score is gaining more importance nowadays? Background music is something that needs ten times more energy than making songs. You can do songs for four more films in the time you take for composing a background music score for just one movie! In the West, they are amazed that in Indian films the same person composes both the songs and the background score. But over here, whether it was Naushadsaab in Hindi films, Ilayaraja down here or most other composers, we have had this tradition almost as a culture. Speaking for myself, I like to do both and it is about my credibility and sometimes when I get both right, it is a great high for me! Why do you use the word "sometimes"? Why are you so modest, almost Bachchan-esquely so, in your statements? I have so much to learn and so much to achieve. And things can go wrong despite hard work so often. You can't orchestrate results and the magic just happens sometimes. When it does, every aspect of the film and the music blends together, sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally! "Unintentionally"! Well, sometimes you are trying to do your part right and it may or may not happen. Or things can just go wrong elsewhere. Just one slip - like in an expression on the face of one actor, or in the way a director expresses himself, or even some technical point can prevent everything from falling in place. So when everything turns out perfect, as in my Tu hi re in Bombay or as in Pyar kiya to darna kya in Mughal-E-Azam, you feel blessed like an angel. Gulzarsaab tells us that you light a candle when your singer enters the recording cabin. Have you always done this? I began to do it after my first visit to Khwaja Gharib Nawaz at Ajmer Sharif. The candles lit there have an effect I cannot describe. In my studio too, it is so inspirational and organic amidst all the electronic gadgets. He also tells us that over the decade since you first worked with him in Dil Se..., you have become much more familiar with the Hindi film mijaaz or temperament. Would you agree? I have become more conscious of the language. Subhash (Ghai)ji and some others made me conscious about that when I began working with them. I always had this belief that music has no language and that a tune could be converted by extraordinary lyrics into a great song in any language. But Subhashji taught me otherwise. In Taal, Anand Bakshisaab wrote most of the lyrics before I made the tunes. The same was the case with The Legend Of Bhagat Singh and Sameerji. I realised that you cannot express certain words just anyhow. The elongation of syllables or of words - the syntax, that is - is something that is peculiar to every language. So I am learning Urdu for the last 2-3 years and my Hindi vocabulary is also up by 40-50 per cent! And did that also apply to English? English was easier for me, though when I took up Bombay Dreams, I did not know whether I could pull it off. But I managed, I think, though the first song, Journey home, was already made before I took up the project. And with the passage of years, as you get the time to evolve and be more of yourself, you begin to learn which song to hold back, even if you have liked it yourself, when you are offering a director your compositions. How upsetting is it when a film like Delhi - 6 does not work and your music does not get its due? Initially I would find such a contingency very painful, but now I have learnt to be detached. I explained to myself that the next assignment is waiting and that you can't spoil it by brooding on this but should aim to score there instead! With Rakeyshji, I was very happy with both Rang De Basanti and Delhi-6, but when a film does not work I think that all of us should admit that we have gone wrong somewhere. Music alone may not have ever helped a film become a hit, but it is definitely one of the major factors. And yet, even success or failure of a film is relative: I know people who have watched Dil Se... 30-40 times just for one sequence and I know of people who loved Delhi-6. Like I said, it's all about the right timing. Society's state of mind and its concerns are all important. People do not like darkness in films now because I guess there is so much of it in real life! (Laughs) And coming to Slumdog Millionaire, a cliché that you will have to answer again for us, Did you expect the film and your songs to reach where they have? No way! (Laughs). But yes, I loved the film when I watched it. All I was thinking about is that I wanted to work with a filmmaker as loved and respected as Danny Boyle. There was something strangely positive about the film - I remember feeling inexplicably relieved at the end of the movie. So you worked on the music after the film was complete. Yes and after putting in the songs Danny re-cut the film. How did you get the idea of working with M.I.A.? I find her an extraordinary artiste who makes political statements with her music. Some years back, she had come down to record her music at my studio because she needed some specific kind of percussion and had expressed a wish to work with me then because she liked the energy in my music. At that time, I was busy. But when this opportunity arose, I naturally took it. How do you react to Indians slamming Jai ho as nowhere compared to your best songs, even though its versions abroad have rocked charts too? Well, I had to make something that was right for the film. It wasn't a situation that demanded a Beethoven's Symphony or a Ba-ba black sheep! Composing for films is not about showing the world what you can do. You have to get something right first and then try and excel in it. The reverse way would be disastrous. The other criticism is that you have reworked Choli ke peeche from Khal-Nayak as Ringa ringa. But despite the story you gave to a section of the press, it just had a similar flavour. I was misquoted in that story - I never said that I was remixing the song. I only said that I was influenced by that song as the most important anthem of the 1990s, which is the era being shown when Ringa ringa is playing in the film. That was the reason why I chose not to compose a completely diverse song for this situation and also why I took the same singers - Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun. It was my ode to Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Subhash Ghai and the song's team. Digressing a bit, don't you feel that Subhashji's Yuvvraaj was very underrated among your scores from last year? I agree. Of late, Subhashji has been repeatedly unlucky - in the 1990s, I was to do a fantastic subject called Shikhar with him. In 2003, there was Motherland. Neither film took off. And now it is Yuvvraaj, on which we worked for almost two years and made some extraordinary songs, that went unnoticed for various reasons, while Slumdog..., on which I worked for two weeks, went so far. Life can be so unpredictable! And what were your first thoughts when you won first one trophy and then another - and we do not mean the words you spoke at the Oscar ceremony where you also have to keep in mind the audience? I was extremely happy that my mother, my wife and my sister Ishrat, who is a singer, were all there with me. Such occasions are less about personal happiness and more about what precious people around you, especially your family and friends, feel. My first thought when the first award was announced was nothing - my mind went blank since I was due to sing in some 20 seconds! (Laughs) When the second award was declared, I just wanted to take the trophy, go into my room and sleep!! (Laughs again). The one week of anticipation, rehearsals and tensions all dissolved into that! And what do you feel - sorry again for the clichéd query - about being the first Indian to clinch two Oscars? I can't gauge anything now - maybe I will know after a couple of years. Let's see what good things come out of it. And now we have so many fans in India depressed because you will be working here for a less here. (Laughs) Honestly, after Bombay Dreams I had scope to do work outside but never used the opportunity. I was not ready then - not that I am ready now! (Chuckles) - but I came back here then and as it happened did some pretty ordinary work! But now I want to work there - for me, it's more about developing relationships, collaborating, culturally connecting and doing the right organic stuff. I have an agent there and have taken up one major assignment that I can reveal only after a while because of a non-disclosure clause in my contract. All I can say is that it is a proper American film that will also demand music of the kind that I am at home with. And what are the Indian films in your bag? I have Anthony D'Souza's Blue, Mani Ratnam's Ravan, Abbas Tyrewala's 1 - 800 - Love and one more film. In Chennai. I have Robot and the animation film Sultan with Rajnikanth and a film with Gautham Menon. What changes do we get to see in your music after the Oscar win? There will not be a change in my music but I have to be more careful - because I guess my music will be noticed by more people now. I guess we have to culturally accommodate as much as we can. There is definitely a sense of pressure but that's good. Good music always comes with honesty and when made directly from the heart and by being conscious of melody. A lot of new composers have come in of late. Have any of them impressed you? I like their spirit and also their desire to experiment. At the same time, however, I miss excellent melodies and life-changing lyrics in today's music and I am looking forward to hearing some of those. Lyrics, for example, should be much more than about Soniye and Maahiya! The new music directors must also realise that it is a team that consolidates your work - you need a director who understands you. Ismail Darbar got one in Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy in Farhan Akhtar. A composer cannot be like an island. The director has a huge hand in decisions about both creativity and also dignity - dignity about what you should and should not do, about a mission for reviving something good and other firm convictions.
