Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 4 Apr 2009 | 1:00 pm Court Martial - Sangeeth Sivan, director Ek - The Power of OneEk - The Power of One starring Nana Patekar and Bobby Deol has released and had left it's director Sangeeth Sivan surprised. Reason? He isn't able to comprehend the backlash coming the way of his film when the fact is that it is a remake of a super successful Telugu film Atahdu [starring Mahesh Babu in the lead] which brought in masses by thousands in theaters when released four years back. Though thousands may not have thronged his Ek - The Power of One, Sangeeth is still delighted to see a reasonably good response for this action flick which has been released after a delay of two years. Charge 1 - Do we have audience for such cinema today? Absolutely yes. Ghajini has shown that to us just recently. The film was a complete masala potboiler and same is in case of Ek as well. Action was the USP in case of Ghajini and Ek too boasts of some fantastic action. I have been continuously getting calls about the fantastic sequence featuring Bobby when he jumps from a sky scraper to a moving train. It was meant to be a moment where adrenalin starts pumping and this is what exactly happens to the audience in the theaters as well. Charge 2 - The film is not bringing in crowds Hello, from where did you hear that? If you are asking me about the lack of audience then let me tell you that it is doing very well in the single screens. This is where the target audience of my film resides. In fact for me it is quite an achievement that even after this long delay; the film is still bringing in crowds. It will easily break even since it has been priced moderately! Charge 3 - The film seems old fashioned, especially in today's multiplex era Agree to some extent. Yes, the film doesn't cater entirely for the multiplex 'junta'. The problem is the fact that everyday films are changing. You must realize that the film was written almost three years back and has been ready since two years. Moreover, the original film, Athadu was made even earlier. So for a segment of today's audience would be finding something amiss. But one thing is for sure; had I got this subject today, I would have treated it differently. Remember Zor, my first action film with Sunny Deol? At that time it was said that it was ahead of it's times. The problem is not the subject; the problem is the timeline in which a film arrives. Charge 4 - Dramatic and thrilling sequences hold the audience but not the emotional content Again, I agree. And this would be more in case of the audience that has perhaps seen Athadu before or has heard about the story. We announced Ek three years back and in the time gone by, it's story and the twist in the plot was no more a hidden secret. No wonder, people were more looking forward to the action sequences and interaction between Nana and Bobby, which I hear has been fetching the best response from the crowds as well. I know that for especially the village portion and the comedy part in the film, audience isn't as engaged. But then the film was stylized well with good edits and camera work due to which the USP of the film, action and drama, is being grabbed well by the audience. Charge 5 - Bobby has repeated his Baadal, Bicchoo, Soldier and Chamku act And let me again remind you that at least three out of the four films that you mention have been quite successful. See, Bobby's market amongst the action lovers can't be ignored. He has proved his mettle over the years and that's the reason why even in Ek, he was the best fit for the role. He plays an assassin because he suits the part well and I have no complains. Sometimes the delay in a film's release can result in wagging tongues. Its ok, one can't help it. As for some reviews going ballistic over his repetitive act, then well I think that there are a lot many out there who have some personal grudge to grind with Bobby and me. My only humble request to them with folded hands is - 'Please visit a single screen theater and check the audience response for yourself!'Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 4 Apr 2009 | 11:33 am Bollywood's A-listers boycott election campaignsAfter Sanjay Dutt's humbling ouster from the elections getting A-list stars to campaign for political parties or individual candidates is going to be very tough. They've discreetly decided to show their solidarity for Sanju Baba by staying away from campaigning. A very close friend of the popular actor says on condition of anonymity, "There's a sense of dismay about Baba's ouster from the elections. All of us had become political animals for this season because of our support for him. But with him no longer eligible for candidacy, we feel campaigning for others would be morally and ethically wrong. Yaar, dil nahin karta." Many A-listers who planned to pitch in their might with the Dutt are now planning impromptu holidays in April with their families or persuading their producers to arrange long schedules far away from the country to beat the simmering summer heat and the discontent of the elections post the Dutt factor. At least 7 major stars confessed to me on Wednesday morning that they would have happily campaigned for Sanjay Dutt or even for other candidates if Dutt had been in the fray. "But without him, the spirit of solidarity has vanished .Why should we campaign for anyone when Baba is out?" says a colleague and co-star of Dutt. Madhur Bhandarkar echoes the rest of the industry's feeling of dejection on Dutt's ouster. "I'm out of Mumbai in Karjat for the whole of April shooting. Would I campaign for someone now? Doubtful. Unless it's someone I believe can take the country forward. And at the moment I don't see anyone whom I believe in." Govinda has offered to campaign for his Congress colleagues. But in the same breath he says, "My services are optional. My heart has to say the candidate is right. What happened with Sanju is tragic destiny. We can't fight it. But we can stop and think about it." Irrfan Khan says very clearly that it would take a lot of persuasion for him to campaign for anyone. "I need to be convinced of a candidate's intentions." But it's the unstoppable Shatrughan Sinha who bells the cat. On the way to Jammu on Wednesday morning to campaign for his party (the BJP) Shatrughan Sinha didn't mince words. "It's true that getting stars to campaign this election won't be that easy. We of the film industry talk about solidarity and brotherhood. But we're a house divided. I don't know how many people would have come forward to actually campaign for their Sanju Baba. But at the moment getting stars to campaign has become really tough. That puts a greater burden on me. I don't only have to look out for my own candidacy in Patna but I also have to be the so-called star attraction for my party and campaign for other candidates." As for Sanjay's inability to contest elections, Sinha says, "It's the law of land telling him not to contest elections. We've to respect that. Humein banana republic nahin humein republic banana hai." Sinha advises restrain for all potential election candidates including the Samajwadi Party which has apparently suggested a Congress conspiracy against Sanjay Dutt. "This kind of talk is only going to antagonize the Centre and won't help anyone." Commenting on party member Varun Gandhi's inflammatory anti-Muslim speech and subsequent incarceration Shatrughan Sinha says, "I've decided not to make any comments on the matter. Having said this, I'd like to say decorum and restrain in your public speeches is a hallmark of a successful politician. You've to preach and practice transparency and decency in your public speeches. You've to make sure you don't hurt the sentiments of any section of the people." The voluble and entertaining talker comments, "I am identified with a Hindu party. But I've never said or done anything to create a feeling of mistrust among Muslims. In fact I've been repeatedly invited to Pakistan as their state guest even after being inducted in the BJP. And my biggest victory in politics is when Muslims say they trust me. In fact I'm about to attend a huge Muslim convention in Patna at the Anjuman Islamiya Hall. I feel I'm more a people's person than a politician."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 4 Apr 2009 | 11:17 am Subhash K. Jha speaks about 8x10 TasveerNo wonder the director sent off an email before the film's release requesting that the suspense not be revealed in the reviews. The plot in 8X10 unravels with such elegant dexterity you are tempted to spill the beans. However doing so would be a crime worse than the multiple murders attempted and achieved, in this understated gently violent and subtly tongue-in-cheek slasher movie. Normally Indian whodunits are so hysterical in tone you rue the day Dolby sound was invented. Kukunoor's narrative uses sound to create a delectable and subtle distinction between crime and lyricism. The characters move through a labyrinth of heightened luxury. The Canadian sun-kissed lakes and valleys open up a vista of narrative possibilities, some realized many unexplored. Either way, the plot obtains its bridled energy from the director's clear and present understanding of the danger that could underline the most beautiful and desirable surfaces. All you have to do is scratch. Kukunoor definitely knows the finest suspense creators of celluloid, from Alfred Hitchcock to Brian de Palma to Manoj Night Shyamalan (who incidentally has left his glorious past behind). In these past-masters Kukunoor discovers his magic and metier. He converts the history of the whodunit into a crackling currency of characters and plot-twists that make you in the audience touch the goings-on without really embracing them. A perfunctory attitude underlines the storytelling, creating within the high level of aesthetics a murky interior where knives are used to cut human body rather than succinct meat on the baroque dining table. The supernatural element is used with a delicious and devilish delicacy. Believe what you will, says the director. But you have to admit that there are times when logic simply takes a backseat. Providentially Kukunoor keeps the supernatural element on a believable scale. Having Akshay Kumar to go into intermittent premonitory bouts helps. Akshay doesn't fight the tides of improbability. He goes with the flow riding the waves with a twinkle-eyed ever-grin, sometimes-grim graciousness that allows him to get real without forfeiting his heroic image. When Akshay is not busy being self-righteous or cocky he is very likeable in this film. Without revealing the climax , it would be appropriate to say here, more than anywhere else, the gripping elements of noire cinema kiss the masala conventions of Hindi cinema. It's a heady brew cooked at an even temperature that reaches the narrative to a boiling point without bubbling over. Nagesh Kukunoor is unarguably an adept storyteller. His triumph with the whodunit is manifested in delicate details that draw inspiration from both the masters of the murder mystery and yet re-define the culture of filmed crime in a language that's derived from the director's own sensibility. The film could have made its end-game a little less wedded to Hindi cinema's formulistic conventions. But the concession to commercialism doesn't compromise the suspenseful equilibrium of a canvas where a family photograph speaks a thousand words. The film's quiet restrained rhythm of expression is palpable. You can't miss the artery of understatement even when that gloved hand with the knife gleams on the polished exterior. That's when we begin to see what the film wants to do. It takes the whodunit into a land of murderous silences. Greed underlines the crime. But the director is not greedy. He refrains from reaching out for the entire armoury from the suspenseful genre. For telling us that less can be more even in a whodunit Nagesh Kukunoor and his leading man must be applauded.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 4 Apr 2009 | 10:47 am Sushmita Sen urges fans to vote

The risk of no-release stance that producers were threatening for weeks has now become a real issue. Quite painful because in year 2009, Bollywood report card has seen red all over itself and has been continuously thirsting for a money spinner. As of now, the two biggest money spinners have ironically been flops (Chandni Chowk To China, Delhi 6) while none of the three successful films - Raaz - The Mystery Continues, Dev D and Slumdog Millionaire has crossed even the 30 crore mark. With barren times ahead, it is only a saddening situation for Bollywood, something which brings us to the first prospective bona fide blockbuster in the making Kambakkht Ishq. As of now, this Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor starrer is confirmed for a 29th May release and if that indeed happens, it is surely going to be 'balle balle' time for Bollywood. A sure shot success in the making, this Sajid Nadiwadala production has a lot riding on it and is one film which has in it to turn out to be that multi crore HIT that has been evading Bollywood in 2009. Month of June should only get better though with at least three biggies lined up for release - Kaminey, Luck and Love Aaj Kal. Thankfully each of these is carrying a good vibe around it and there is no reason why end of second quarter of 2009 shouldn't make way for an even better and encouraging second half of the year. Kaminey has Shahid Kapoor (in a double role) coming along with Priyanka Chopra in a Vishal Bhardwaj film - a potent mix indeed. Luck has Soham Shah returning after Kaal and bringing with him a massive cast comprising of Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Danny Denzongpa and Shruti K. Haasan. An action entertainer, it should be the masala popcorn dish of the season. Moving away from masala though, there should be some sugar and saccharine in the offering with Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Love Aaj Kal. Name Imtiaz Ali is good enough and there is no reason why he shouldn't be able to recreate the magic of Jab We Met and Socha Na Tha all over again. These are the reasons why one can believe that Bollywood is indeed eyeing some better times ahead. Months so far may have been horrendous while April and (most part of) May do not sound much promising either. However, month to follow should so the trick with New York, Life Partner, Raftaar 24 x 7, Shortcut - The Con is On, Jashn, Kaminey, Luck and Love Aaj Kal managing to bring back the audiences into the theaters. One thing is for sure though. If these films indeed turn out to be good, then we may also end up relishing 'dessert' hits with small movies managing to bring in moolah. But then if these aforementioned films fail (God forbid), then it would be quite a monumental task to win the trust and confidence of audiences in second half of the year. Here is keeping one's fingers crossed because especially in such trouble times, aakhir Bollywood ka kal kisne dekha!Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 4 Apr 2009 | 10:27 am In Kaminey, Priyanka and Shahid go for a makeoverClick above for more movie stills Looks do matter. Especially when the female in question is Priyanka Chopra. She was a stunner in her last two successful outings at the box office - Dostana and Fashion. If in the former she was the editor of a fashion magazine, in the latter she was a show- stopper herself. Of course, all shows stopped at her arrival but she decided to take a different route altogether in her films to follow. She decided to be choosy about her work and picked on only two projects, Kaminey and What's Your Rashee. What makes Kaminey special is the fact that she got to work with director Vishal Bhardwaj, a master story teller when it comes to real cinema, and known for giving his leading ladies an entirely different look. While speculations were abounding about Priyanka Chopra's appearance in Kaminey, there has been a constant buzz ever since the first theatrical promo of the film hit the screens. Her hardcore Marathi girl act has made people sit up and take notice of Kaminey that has Shahid Kapoor in the lead. Says Priyanka's close associate, "In the film, she plays the role of Sweety who is not only a bindaas girl but also someone who is traditional to the core (watch her doing those typical Maharashtrian dance steps and you will know). She is on a complete tangent if one remembers her ultra chic and glam avtar in the films that she has been seen in over the years. Agrees Priyanka for whom Kaminey will be her first release of 2009 as a leading lady (after a hectic 2008 which saw her featuring in six back to back releases - Love Story 2050, God Tussi Great Ho, Chamku, Drona, Fashion and Dostana), "Yes, there has been an effort to make Sweety look completely different. She had to be believable and someone who isn't ultra glamorous. Also, I have gone with a minimal make-up look in the film." Even Shahid Kapoor seems to be enjoying his double role stint in the film where one of the characters played by him not just stammers but also keeps an unkempt look. 'Reality' is what Vishal Bhardwaj has ensured in his characters and the same holds good for Shahid Kapoor too. With both Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra seemingly going for a makeover and giving an altogether new account of themselves, the wait begins for this film which is all set to arrive at theaters on 26th June (yes, the film has been moved from it's original release date of 5th June).Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 4 Apr 2009 | 10:24 am "If not for Ek, I could have been in Slumdog Millionaire" - Chunky PandeyIf there is a sense of regret that Chunky Pandey has about working in Bobby Deol starrer Ek - The Power of One, he isn't showing it. However, he does believe that if not for agreeing to do a walk-on part in this Sangeeth Sivan directed action flick, he may as well have been a part of Slumdog Millionaire. Chunky's connection with Slumdog Millionaire was Loveleen Tandon, the casting director and co-director of the Oscar winning film. "I remember it was early 2007 when Loveleen Tandon was casting for a short film about AIDS for Mira Nair. Even though I was almost finalized for the film, I couldn't do it since my dates were blocked for Ek", reveals Chunky. A believer in destiny, he truly thinks that if things would have fell in place, he may as well have been recommended by Loveleen Tandon for Danny Boyle's masterpiece too. "You can never predict how things turn in the film world. One thing can inevitably lead to other", says Chunky with a faint smile, "Mira Nair's film on AIDS was based on a sensitive subject and it was a good enough platform for me." He looks at the incident gone by as a missed chance. "I had ample opportunity to showcase my talent as an actor who can do something far beyond just comedy. It was just the right forum for me to make an impression and who knows, Loveleen could have found me suitable for being one of the key characters in Slumdog Millionaire." Does he regret working in Ek - The Power of One where he hardly had a part to play? "It's OK, one can't get stuck with the past", Chunky comments, "Yes, today when I see all the euphoria around Slumdog Millionaire, I do feel if I too could have been a part of it. But at that time, Ek was the priority. I had to do it for Sangeeth since he was responsible for giving me a beautiful role in Apna Sapna Money Money. I couldn't say no to him even though I knew that mine was just a guest appearance in the film." He is looking at breaking away from a comic actor image now. "Enough of it actually", he says with a new found resolution, "I don't want my tombstone to read that 'Here lies the man who only did comedy'! My current lot of films would be the last where I will aim at making people laugh. From here on, I want to be seen in all kind of roles, whether serious, emotional or even out and out negative. I have to take a step in a new direction now." Some of the upcoming comedies of Chunky are De Dhana Dhan, Shortkut - The Con Is On, Paying Guest, Khallballi - Fun Unlimited, Hello Darling and Daddy Cool, all of which are expected to release this year.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 4 Apr 2009 | 10:18 am Tasveer: A gently violent whodunit - Times of India

Her silky mane, elfin form and mysterious smile catapulted this Junagadh lass to the dizzy heights of stardom. Co-starring Amitabh Bachchan in numerous blockbusters, she sure enjoyed a stellar run. Along with Zeenat Aman, she changed the face of the Indian heroine. On her 60th birth anniversary, Screen salutes the real screen- scorcher Life stranger than cinema Born 60 years ago in Junagadh, Gujarat, Parveen Babi was a special child - the only issue of her parents, born to them 14 years after their marriage. Her father, Vali Mohammed Babi, used to be an administrator with the Nawab of Junagadh. This pretty college girl caught the eye of filmmaker B R Ishara while studying at St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad. He gave her first break in Charitra (1973) opposite cricketer-turned-actor Salim Durrani. Though the film flopped, Parveen had registered her presence. She landed Majboor opposite Amitabh Bachchan on the strength of it. Parveen changed the cinematic syntax of the holier-than-thou Indian heroine. Smoking, clubbing, donning Western costumes, she lent glamour to all her roles. She broke several social conventions and taboos. She was the first Indian heroine to be featured on the cover of Time magazine for her beauty, charm and success. She was often considered to be Zeenat Aman's rival owing to their sex-symbol tag. In fact, she acted alongside Aman in Ashanti (1982) and Mahaan (1983). Even in hero-centric films like Deewaar (1975), Shaan (1980) and Namak Halaal (1982), she made her presence felt with her serene aloofness. She even stole the thunder from her co-star Hema Malini in Manoj Kumar's Kranti (1981). Parveen also starred in offbeat films like Vinod Pande's Yeh Nazdeekiyan (1982) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Rang Birangi (1983). Her success ran into heavy weather in the mid-'80s following her mental illness. She left the film industry to move to New York where she became associated with the spiritual guru U. G. Krishnamurti. Parveen returned to Mumbai in 1992 when she was unrecognisable as she had put on lots of kilos. She tried to switch over to interior designing without any success and finally died a recluse in her Juhu penthouse apartment, her death discovered only after her housing society secretary complained to the police that she had not collected milk and newspapers from her doorstep for two days. Parveen rests in peace buried next to her mother at Santa Cruz, Mumbai. But whenever the strains of Raat baaqi and Jawaan jaaneman (her Namak Halaal hits) are played in discotheques, the ethereal image of a gyrating Parveen rises before your eyes. Men Muster She was a flower-child and quite like the roles she played in films - she led a carefree, Bohemian lifestyle. Parveen Babi had volatile live-in relationships with Kabir Bedi and Mahesh Bhatt. She even abandoned her flourishing film career to be with Bedi in Italy where he had discovered new acting avenues. Bedi describes his one-time paramour thus, "She was very volatile and also quite possessive. She was a woman of extremes - very happy at one moment, very sad at another." Their relationship soured and she returned to India to pick up the threads of her abandoned career. Parveen struck back with bigger hits this time. Then she had a two-year affair with Bhatt that ended after she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Mahesh Bhatt hailed her as, "A woman whom I loved and lost." She was also involved later with the much-married Danny Denzongpa. In her delusional state of mind she later even accused her co-star Amitabh Bachchan of having taken advantage of her. Max Bachchan Amitabh Bachchan co-starred with Parveen Babi in eight films - Majboor, Deewaar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Shaan, Kaalia, Mahaan, Khud-daar and Do Aur Do Paanch. In an interview Bachchan once admitted, "Most of my films with Parveen were superbly successful. The audience liked us as a pair. She was a new kind of leading lady to the screen. We'd work on all these films and go our own way. But because we belonged to the same social circle - Romesh Sharma, Danny Denzongpa, Reena Roy, Smita Patil, Javed Akhtar - we'd visit each other and listen to music. She was a very fun-loving, light-hearted person, always full of joie de vivre!" He recalled gratefully how all of them would visit him after his accident and that he would never forget the people who stuck close to him in his time of crisis. Bachchan had taken Parveen out for her first live show in '83. The eternal muse Parveen started showing the first signs of paranoia and schizophrenia (in which a victim is prone to all sorts of grandiose delusions and hallucinations) during her relationship with Mahesh Bhatt, . She had a nervous breakdown and Bhatt later made Arth (1983) wherein the character of the other woman, played by Smita Patil, was based on Parveen. Bhatt chose to bid a final good-bye to Parveen by making yet another film Woh Lamhe... (2006) based on his life with her. Bhatt says that the streets of Mumbai are littered with memories of half-lived yesterdays. "Nostalgia is pain. The day Parveen died, I realised that despite the claims I made to myself, her memory had not withered within me with the passage of time."
