Now Rishi Kapoor a.k.a. Chintu Ji stands up for elections

If along with Sanjay Dutt, Shatrughan Sinha and the likes, you see larger than life hoardings of Rishi Kapoor smiling at you with folded hands, don't be surprised. 'Chintu Ji', as he is fondly called amongst his family and friends, is also gearing up to run for elections this season. Well, let's clear the suspense now. It is his character which goes by the name of 'Chintu Ji' that contests elections in the namesake film. Interestingly, the film's name is derived from Rishi Kapoor's nickname - Chintu. Directed by Ranjit Kapoor, this film is part fiction, part reality and part illusion, as per Rishi Kapoor. Though Chintu Ji has been ready for a while, the release is being planned in such a way that it coincides with the Lok Sabha elections, hence going with the film's theme. The makers are looking at bringing the film to theaters on 1st May. "Yes, that's what I have been told", confirms Rishi Kapoor, the central protagonist of the film, "There is some good marketing plan in place for this film. Even though it's a small film, it comes with a good idea and a timely release around the elections will only help the film to be hyped further." Though the film is partially based on Rishi Kapoor's life, it features the veteran actor in the role of a filmstar who is looking for some adventure in his life. As a result, he decides to contest elections from his hometown in spite of not really being quite serious about politics. Carrying forward his bratty nature and a mega lifestyle, his main intention of running an election is to win, mint money and make merry. "My character of 'Chintu Ji' doesn't quite have any intentions of reforming the life of the villagers. However, he does eventually bring in a turnaround even though it is done unknowingly. The film's script, has been done quite innovative because it's quite a difficult task to build a story around a real life personality, add on elements of fiction to it and make it a cinematic engaging experience as well", says Rishi Kapoor. Though he adopts a wait and watch stance instead of divulging the rest of the storyline of the film, Rishi Kapoor does hints that Chintu Ji reflects the socio-economic-political state of India Today! A comedy, Chintu Ji is produced by Kaleidoscope Entertainment and would see a kick start in its promotion very soon.

"I play a famous star in 'Bollywood Hero'" - Neha Dhupia

Download image as wallpaper She has not had a Bollywood release in 2009 as yet, but this lass has made it big time with her latest in West. After giving some memorable performances in Bollywood films, Neha Dhupia is all set to take the western world by storm with the mini series titled 'Bollywood Hero'. Bollywood Hungama caught up with the elated and ecstatic actress to find out more about the series… From Bollywood you will now be moving west… what was the catalyst for this change? Well to be frank this has been on since January. I auditioned for the miniseries then and got the part. Almost all Hollywood productions go through an audition and screen test no matter how big a star you may be, and that is what makes the difference. What about the series how did you get to know about this particular audition? I was contacted by Tabrez Noorani, who was a line producer for Slumdog Millionaire. Tabres is a friend of mine and he was the person who told me about this. First I was a bit sceptical but then he said that the guys out there were pretty keen on having me play the part of Alima Lakhani. So I did the screen test and got the part. I was contacted by Tabrez Noorani, who was a line producer for Slumdog Millionaire About the series could you brief us a bit on it? Bollywood Hero, stars Chris Katta from Saturday Night Live and Julian Sanda. The series is about Chris whose ambition is to be an actor in a Bollywood film. As for my role, I come in when Chris comes to Mumbai and lands a role in a Bollywood film, I am his co-star in that. What about your role of Alima, what is she like? Alima, is this famous star when it comes to Hindi films and she is cast opposite this newcomer from the west who has come to India to act in a film. What about the dates of the series, when will be hitting the screens et al? As I said earlier, I did the auditions in January and we started the shoot only in March. Currently the production process is still on and is scheduled to be completed by the 22nd of April. As for the release date we are looking at somewhere in August may be around the 7th. Besides that we are also planning to have a lot of media coverage done in July around the American Independence day.

Mallika Sherawat to endorse Playboy?

Download image as wallpaper She came, she saw (or is it 'showed'), she conquered! We are indeed talking about the one and only Mallika Sherawat. After having won everyone's hearts alike with her superlative performance in Murder, Mallika went onto become one of Bollywood's most prized and desirable possession, a tag that she carries with her till today, with elan! For those who feel that Mallika has done the great vanishing trick after her last release Welcome, here's some news that will actually act as some fragrance! Well, the news is that the international brand 'Playboy' (not the magazine, but the perfume) has been rumored to have roped in Madame Mallika for its launch in India, which should happen anytime mid-April. Although it's not clear as to whether she will be endorsing the brand or be merely inaugurating the launch party, one thing is for sure, that not just the 'Playboy' perfume will be a huge sellout, but also will garner lots of bunny points for itself. What say, Mallika!

Subhash K. Jha speaks about Videsh - Heaven On Earth

When the first slap comes, it hits us the audience hard across the face. Spousal abuse as a theme is not new to cinema. What sets Deepa Mehta's Heaven On Earth apart from other films on the theme including Jagmohan Mundhra's Provoked is the fusion of unspoken unexpressed terror with mythological elements all packed with sardine-like compactness into a small apartment in Ontario where Chand newly-packed into a flight that takes her to her wedding in Canada, arrives fearful and hopeful. What she brings with her is her mother's tales and homilies, songs and mythology that follow the bride into her chamber of horrors. What follows in Chand's new life is a Kafkaesque nightmare that could claim the life of any Indian bride transported into a foreign country after marriage. Absolute authenticity is the hallmark of Deepa Mehta's vision. Her permanent cinematographer Giles Nuttgens enters Chand's adopted Canadian home with her and remains by her side, living her pain, experiencing her humiliation and agony, as within no time Chand becomes that nightmarish entity whom we all read about in crime sections of the papers. The abused wife. The film's greatest triumph is its economy of expression. The tightly-wound tale of the tormented wife is never allowed to have loose moments. Ironically outwardly we see a warm home filled with a Sikh family half of whom seem to have absolutely nothing to do. Within their abject nullity lies the secret to the violence that claims possesses and tries to smother Chand's domestic dreams. We know from the start that she'll escape the nightmare of a brutal marriage. That she lives to tell her tale is self-evident. The magic of her existence in the trap of an arranged marriage lies in the illusion of normalcy and compassion that she creates within the ambience of abject terror by inventing a double for her husband...a doppelganger, a spirit in human form, if you will, who applies balm to all of Chand's wounds and gives her the courage to survive when the very breath of her existence is being choked out. The snake-god from Chand's backyard in human form assuming the physical traits of her violent husband is a metaphor that illuminates the darkest recesses of Chand's godforsaken life. Every time she hides in her bedroom for a dialogue with her phantom-soul mate, Preity Zinta's face lights up with thousands of unexpressed yearnings trapped in a heart that aches for release. Zinta lights up the darkest corners of her tortured and frightened character's heart. Thoroughly deglamorized and devastated by destiny's cruel blows , Preity plays Chand with a dignity and depth that take us by surprise. She and director Deepa Mehta keep the hysteria completely in check. The drama is generated completely from the normal domesticated sounds and sights. The film creates the growing claustrophobia of Chand's marital domesticity with acute austerity. The spurts of on-screen violence are all the more shocking for the way they erupt within the workaday milieu. The one big sequence of violence erupts in the kitchen when Chand's somewhat confused and altogether out-of-control husband Rocky thrashes his wife....for his outwardly-stoic mother's sake, of course. There are no villains in Heaven On Earth-not even the husband Rocky (played with understanding by newcomer Vansh Bhardwaj) who hits out at wounds that are never allowed to heal. There are only victims in Deepa's scheme of presentation. Silently-screaming puppets on a string being manoeuvred into a life of domesticated dereliction by forces that we could designate as fate or just cruel blows of workaday drudgery. The mythic intervention that creeps into the plot with the appearance of the naag in Chand's backyard slithers into the scenario with surreptitious grace, creating for the theme a residue of myth and dream that nourishes the wife's bereft kingdom. The borderline between illusion and reality, between Chand's violent reality and the world of harmony and love she creates in the womb of her heart, is so superbly seamless we never know when Chand's smothered scream transforms into a silent whoop of triumph. Heaven On Earth is not a film that offers easily digestible solutions to the complex problem of domestic violence. It neither takes sides nor allows the bride to turn into a pitiable victim. Preity Zinta standing supremely dignified at the centre of the conflict furnishes the theme with amazing grace. She's the only known face in the crowded Punjabi home of patriarchs, matriarchs, victims and perpetrators of bitter violence. But Preity never lets it known she's a star. She merges into the terrifying domesticity of Deepa's household. The character steps out occasionally into the workaday world of a migrant job (the friendship with the feisty Jamaican woman at her workplace rings a little hollow when compared with the reality that envelopes the rest of the plot) and returns to her horrific home space where she creates a mythical merger between illusion and reality. Finally when Chand says goodbye to a life of married trauma we see on Preity's face a mixture of distant triumph and immediate self-realization. Chand has finally come home.

"There's a feeling of dismay about the IPL moving out of India" - Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta is hassled but ever-optimistic about the repercussions of the IPL being re-located to South Africa. She talks to Subhash K Jha You sound very stressed? These last few days have been very hard on me, thanks to all the hassles connected to the Indian Premiere League (IPL). Was it a shock to you when the IPL was relocated to South Africa? The situation is such, what to do? The option was to either have it outside India or not at all. No one is happy to shift from home ground. That thrill of playing across our own country at domestic tournaments is gone. Going to various cities with the matches is a high. However, people can still watch it on TV. That's still there. But an Indian event shifted to South Africa? I know. But we've to be optimistic. Last year when the IPL started everyone thought it would flop. It became the biggest hit ever. Likewise the shift to SA could make the IPL bigger. What else can I do except be hopeful? But it's being trans-located to a new culture and environment? Of course it is! But what can we do? I've always believed whatever happens in life happens for the best. The timing of the IPL crisis was unfortunate. My most challenging film Heaven On Earth is on release. I'd have liked more time nurturing it. You know I did Heaven On Earth for myself. Lots of times I've done things for this reason and that. But this time it was entirely for me. And I don't mean that in any selfish way. I just needed to connect more with my inner self. This film made me do that. You know I did Heaven On Earth for myself Tell me about your preparation for the role. I've worked quite a lot with battered women. I've studied so many kinds of mental disorders. Domestic violence comes much after other forms of disorder. Every scene in Heaven On Earth rings true. I had a hundred notions on how to play the role. But when I met abused women I decided it has to be very real. I'm very proud of it. Let's see how the audiences in India react. So the timing of IPL was unfortunate then! Yes, it was a little unfortunate. No matter how positive we try to be about the situation there's undoubtedly a feeling of dismay about the IPL moving out of India. It's amazing how such a thing could happen. It's like uprooting a national event? Exactly. It's like asking an actor to perform in a theatre where nobody knows him. But we'll make sure that the quality and profile of the game doesn't change. Only two percent of the audience watches the game in a stadium. Most of them watch the game on television. But there's that vibe when the game happens on home ground. That spirit can't be captured anywhere. Having said that, I don't want to sound whiny and petty, I want to thank South Africa for agreeing to host the IPL games. They've gone out of their way to accommodate us, flung their fields open to us. I think South Africa will make a beautiful home for the games. I want to thank South Africa for agreeing to host the IPL games. They've gone out of their way to accommodate us Wasn't the choice between South Africa and England? Yes there were several options. But it finally came down to choosing between those two countries. We didn't want to go into a place where there was too much rain. I think SA will be fun. Who knows, they might even allow me to play. That's my secret fantasy. Miracles do happen, you know. So is South Africa going to be the permanent venue for the IPL? If India decides to have elections every year, who knows? Ironically, South Africa is also holding elections. Is it just elections that ousted IPL from India? Or was there a security scare after what happened to the Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan? I refused to believe India is scared about the security. Does the country shut down because we can't get enough security? I think we need to vote even more carefully. We must put the proper people in places of power. I don't think we should vote for anyone -ANYONE - who has got criminal records. See their track records and then vote. How will you be ready for the IPL in SA in time? We Indians don't only exist in chaos. We thrive in it. Even last year when IPL happened for the first time we grappled with all odds. I know I'm going to have sleepless nights. But that's a different story. I can't pretend I'm not disappointed by the relocation. But South Africa is a terrific country. I'll have lots to do besides cricket. In Punjab it was difficult for me to move out. Preity Zinta will have a blast shopping in SA. Preity Zinta the team owner is worried. We've no players from SA. Neither does Shah Rukh. Are the boys demoralized by the relocation? Their choice was between no IPL and IPL in South Africa.

Book Review: Women in Indian Film

'Women in Indian Film' is an experiment if one looks at the entire reading experience when it comes to books on cinema. That's because first and foremost, this is not really a book in the offering. In fact it's a series that encapsulates the life and work of 10 women who either made a difference to Indian cinema or at least made their presence felt amongst the masses. It's the presentation of this series which makes a difference because instead of the story of these ten women being presented as a part of one single book, there are 10 different mini books (or say, booklets) which are bundled in one common packaging. It is this presentation which grabs one's attention because these booklets are the kind that can be carried in one's pocket. So, if one wants to read about one particular actress/film maker/technician on the way to office, it can be comfortably carried along. Moreover, the booklets are light weight as well with each of them lasting barely 20 odd pages. With an average read lasting close to 20 minutes each, this entire series can be wrapped up in less than four hours. Coming to the series in itself, it's an experimentation of sorts. Ask anyone from the age group of 15 to 60 for women who made a difference to Indian cinema and the usual suspects would be Madhubala, Waheeda Rehman, Kajol, Rekha, Hema Malini, Sridevi, Meena Kumari etc. However, this is not the case as the team of women writers behind this series choose to pick some unconventional names. So we have Kaveree Bamzai (Saira Banu, Madhuri Dixit), Rajashri Dasgupta (Aparna Sen), Charu Gargi (Aarti Bajaj), Udita Jhunjhunwala (Jaya Bachchan, Zeenat Aman), Namrata Joshi (Nutan, Mumtaz), Nandini Ramnath (Smita Patil) and Nasreen Munni Kabir (Farah Khan) create an unconventional list of artists and write about them. This unconventional approach actually brings in the reader's attention to the series because if one talks about the usual suspects (as highlighted earlier), most of them have been dissected and bisected by dozens of authors in the past. However, with an exception of a few names, not many have been written or talked about earlier. So with good expectations of reading something short, crisp and exciting in these 20 page booklet, one picks up his/her favorite artist and kick starts the exploration. However, as it turns out, beyond the idea and the packaging, the series doesn't hold your attention in the manner you were expecting. Agreed that in the shortest space possible, an author had to cover the three perspectives - life, work and industry contribution - but while doing so, there is a sense of void that is left once a booklet is through. You are left asking for more when there was an opportunity to pack so much in the little space available. What also turns out to be sort of disappointing in this series is its entire 'essay' approach. One feels like reading through a text book material when more anecdotes and behind-the-scenes sneak peak would have made the booklets more engaging. Also, majority of quotes in the series are picked from the interviews and features of these women in the past years or decades, hence giving the booklet a 'short paper' look and feel. The booklets succeed though in lending a cue for a reader to explore something more on his/her own after going through the quick write-up. Also, they give an idea to other writers to get into details of the life and work of these artists and come up with further elaborate write-ups on them. Moreover, despite being true-to-the-subject approach that the series follows, there are some interesting facts presented that have been mainly unknown to many a readers. Some of these are: - Farah Khan believes that Bachpan [1963] was the world's worst movie ever made and the heroine there was terrible. Not many are aware though that the heroine was none other than her mother (Menka). - After shooting for Aaj Rapat Jaaye [Namak Halaal], Smita Patil was traumatized and asked herself the question - 'Why am I doing this'? - Dilip Kumar never spoke to Smita Patil during the shoot of Shakti since she had commented that she wasn't afraid of working with him - Shashi Kapoor had refused to work with Mumtaz in her early years since she was considered to be a mere stunt heroine. However, at the peak of her career, she became his leading lady in Chor Machaye Shor - Aarti Bajaj fell in love with Anurag Kashyap when she saw him first at Lover's Point, Delhi University, strolling alone in a white short, blue jeans and chappals. - For the bathroom song 'Unse Mile' [Jhuk Gaya Asmaan], Saira Bano insisted that she herself face the camera rather than a body double who was offered - When Farah brought a Counselor home to help her father get rid of drinking, the duo got involved in a drinking session pronto - It was the entry of Mumtaz in the leading lady bracket that blurred the gap between black and white. Also, it was only post Mumtaz era that any women who was seen as being sexual ceased to be a vamp. - Dev Anand met Zeenat Aman at a party and chose her for Hare Rama Hare Krishna based on the way she whipped out a cigarette - There was a time when Aarti Bajaj had to live on one meal in order to ensure that her child was well fed - Jaya Bachchan had huge problems with exposing and was always ill at ease wearing backless cholis, spaghetti strap blouses, exaggerated eye-liner and heavy make up - In her early days in the industry, Madhuri Dixit was told by Boney Kapoor that her arms were too thin. Promptly she joined fitness classes to get into shape. Also, when some close-up shots of Ram Lakhan revealed her pimples, she went to US for skin treatment. - Barjatyas were unwilling to cast Mohnish Behl as the villain in Main Pyar Kiya because as Nutan's son, his onscreen image too was expected to be all noble and goody. Promptly, Nutan called them and said - 'Don't punish Mohnish for being my son' - During talks of Dilip Kumar's second marriage in 1980, Saira Bano declared that she won't stand for any other woman being called Mrs. Dilip Kumar Overall, 'Women in Indian Film' is an attempt at bringing in something different and unique deserves to be appreciated as seldom have authors earlier on thought of bringing out a series in such a fashion. In this regard, it is nice to see women like Zeenat Aman, Mumtaz, Farah Khan and the newer entrant Aarti Bajaj being acknowledged for their contribution to cinema. So even as the effort of Jaya Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Nutan and Smita Patil has been hailed in the past in quite a few write-ups, the remaining names do make for a good inclusion in the series. Now if only the overall content too was exciting as the names, the series may have turned out to be a much better read! Price: Rs. 595/= Rating: **1/2

8X10 Tasveer's much guarded suspense revealed!

Download 8X10 Tasveer wallpapers A famous saying goes as 'We all live in suspense from day to day and that we are the hero of our own story'. Well, most of Bollywood's potboilers have a major suspense element involved in it. One can credit the success of this genre majorly to the likes of Abbas Mustan and gang. The latest movie that's doing the rounds with its suspense element intact is the Akshay Kumar-Ayesha Takia starrer 8 X 10 Tasveer, that's being directed by the talented Nagesh Kukunoor. Rumours have already started doing the rounds regarding the 'unveiling' (read 'spoiling') of the film's much-guarded suspense. Till, now, what has been known of the film is that Akshay Kumar, who plays the role of plays a Forest Ranger called Jai Puri, possesses supernatural powers. And how a personal tragedy 'leads' him to use his unique supernatural power to unravel the mystery behind the murder. Rumours have it that the film has Akshay Kumar in a double role, of which one is a sincere Forest Officer, while the other is the villain. Since both of them get separated at birth, this fact remains unknown to both of them. While their mother is played by Sharmila Tagore, their father is portrayed by the versatile Benjamin Gilani. The actual story unfolds when Gilani dies and the subconscious of the 'hero' Akshay becomes restless, after seeing his father's photograph, that's of the size '8 X 10', thus forming the film's title 8 X 10 Tasveer. Since he is blessed with supernatural powers, he becomes dead sure that his father was murdered and that he just did not die a natural death. Sharmila Tagore tries her level best to convince him that his father died a natural death since she was besides him when he died. But the subconscious in Akshay refuses to agree or believe a word of this. After all the high voltage drama, comes the revelation (courtesy the 'good' Akshay) that his father was indeed murdered by the 'villain' Akshay. Now whether this is true or a rumour, only time will tell.

Pyramid Saimira to sell Aurona Technologies

Entertainment major Pyramid Saimira, which acquired UK and Hyderabad based, gaming company Aurona Technologies in January last year, is now selling the game development firm. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, P S Saminathan, Managing Director, Pyramid Saimira Group said, "We are already in talks with few people in the industry and are on the verge of finalizing a deal. We will make the announcement in the coming 10 - 15 days." He further refused to comment on the prospective buyer or whether the due diligence had been done. Dr. Santosh Pillai, CEO, Aurona, who was recently in Mumbai for the launch of Aurona's first localized game Hanuman- Boy warrior developed for Sony PS2, said, "Even after this deal, we will continue to focus on console and PC game development. Our plans include setting up a full game development cycle for which we will setup a separate team within our existing facility in Hyderabad. We might also setup a new studio." Pillai added that Aurona will now have two separate divisions focusing on developing original games and servicing jobs, respectively. When asked about the reason behind the proposed sale, Saminathan said, "We wanted to consolidate our core business which is of film production and distribution as we have our expertise in that area." Touting Aurona a "small scale" gaming company in comparison to its film business, Saminathan said, "Gaming is not a viable business in India till the time we scale it up. Until your company becomes big, there is no survival in this country." Pyramid Saimira also has plans to roll out with a chain of gaming cafés in another 7-8 months. "We have plans to come up with gaming cafes, but we are holding it due to global economic slowdown. We have a complete plan ready and since we operate majorly in southern part of India, we will set it up in close to 60 cities in south India," concluded Saminathan. Aurona has its presence in UK and Hyderabad with its marketing team and game development team respectively. It develops games for platforms such as Sony Playstation consoles, Xbox, Nintendo DS and PC, amongst others. Apart from Hanuman, Aurona's other recent releases include Dancing with the Stars published by THQ and Yamaha Super Cross, a bike racing game for Nintendo DS.
