GOP Source: George Pataki Mulling Another Go for Governor

Could Governor David Paterson's plummeting poll numbers tempt George Pataki to try to win back his old job? Pataki, who was reportedly considering a 2010 Senate run, is also mulling a Republican gubernatorial effort, according to a New York City lawmaker. "I heard he's looking at it. He hasn't made any determination," says State Senator Marty Golden, a Republican from Brooklyn, who is friendly with the former governor. "Pataki in this vacuum setting would be good." A spokesman for Pataki, David Catalfamo, discounted the idea of Pataki Part Two. "I've never had a conversation with him about it," he said. "I don't think it's on his list of options." The 63-year-old Pataki left office in January 2007 after declining to seek a fourth term. He would have had to challenge Eliot Spitzer, who was at the peak of his popularity.

Pataki, who started a New York City consulting firm with his former top aide, John Cahill, has kept a low profile, occasionally speaking out on environmental issues. Still, voters seem to like him better than Paterson. Fewer than a third of New York voters say they have a favorable opinion of Paterson, according to a recent Siena poll. About half of New York voters have a positive view of the former governor.

Pataki, according to the poll, is less popular than fellow Republican Rudy Giuliani, who is also said to be thinking about a run for governor. Golden said Cahill, a lawyer who served as Pataki's chief of staff, might enter the race as well.

Will Warner Bros. Let Zack Snyder Burn Another $100 Million?

After eighteen days in theaters, Zack Snyder's Watchmen movie has earned just $159 million worldwide — a number, by all indications, less than the $200 million-plus it cost to make, advertise, and litigate. So, the Observer wonders today, is Warner Bros. really crazy enough to give the guy another $100 million to make Sucker Punch, a film he wrote about a girl committed to a mental institution, which he's hilariously promised will be like "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns," but also like Moulin Rouge as well, somehow.

At least Watchmen came with a presold audience of Alan Moore fans and lovers of uncircumcised bell clackers — but will anyone pay money to see a film whose premise sounds like a Terry Gilliam fever dream? Astoundingly, Warner Bros. still thinks so, as Sucker Punch is purportedly scheduled to begin shooting this fall (Amanda Seyfried dropped out yesterday because she'll be filming Big Love at the same time). Presumably, though, WB will wait to hear about Watchmen's DVD sales this summer before they sign any checks.

PJ Harvey and an Inflatable Bounce Castle of One’s Own

The video for PJ Harvey and John Parish’s “Black Hearted Love” shows that the true way to enjoy an inflatable bounce castle is not on some sunny carnival grounds, but rather, deep in the dark woods, under pouring rain, with light bulbs exploding around you. And, of course, with Harvey bouncing and singing this scarily intense love song next to you. The first single off the upcoming A Woman a Man Walked Past (Harvey’s first full-length collaboration with Parish, her frequent producer and a solo singer-songwriter, since 1996’s Dance Hall at Louse Point) sounds like something you’d come across on 120 Minutes in the nineties. That is to say, pretty friggin’ great.

New Details Emerge About Lesbian Vampire Killers

While we were able to clear up some of the confusion surrounding the poorly worded but excitingly titled Lesbian Vampire Killers back in February, it wasn't until a few minutes ago that we learned about this rather bizarre plot detail: "The lesbian vampire queen, who is in fact the only one of the vampires who seems to genuinely be a lesbian rather than just a generally lusty vampire, can only be killed with the sword. It's a subtle moment, so let's rephrase: The lesbian curse is only lifted when the lesbian is penetrated by the cock sword." [Lesbilicious via Jezebel]

Allow Actor-Philosopher André De Shields to Blow Your Mind

Currently appearing opposite Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen on Broadway in Impressionism, André De Shields recently had a deep chat with us in which he kindly laid out his personal philosophies. Below are some choice thoughts we couldn’t fit into this week’s already remarkably wide-ranging Q&A, including ones on Barack Obama’s great failing, the proof that Shakespeare smoked pot, and the origins of Ponzi schemes.

On One World
There’s nothing homogeneous about the universe. So why should we be? Borders have always been illusory. I learned that a long time ago when I worked in Alaska. You know, living in New York, you watch the weather report, and the cold front is always coming in from Canada. Well, you go to Canada, the cold front is coming in from Alaska. Then you go to Alaska, the cold front is coming in from Siberia. Well, just follow that, and you’ll be back in New York again. Why is it that when someone says, “We are one,” we are dismissed as new-age innocents or naïve? That’s one of those immutable truths.

On Thinking Versus Feeling
Perception is everything. And perception is visceral. Perception is feeling, not intellect. I’m not dissing intellect. But Western society has been Cartesian for so long, you know. Everything we experience as important really starts here [points at his gut]. Love, anger, joy, diarrhea, you know. And that makes so much sense! I mean, forget that it makes sense. It’s so true.

On Organized Religion
I’ve already shared mine with you: The universe always says yes. I’m terribly organized. Capricorn. Triple Capricorn. Freud would call me anal-retentive, but I’m not a Freudian. But I definitely agree with Karl Marx: Religion is the opiate of the masses.

On the Philosophical Approach to Acting
Now I completely understand that the top of one mountain is the bottom of the next. When that’s revealed to you, then it’s like, “Oh, wow. How brilliant is that, that I spend my time trying to make it? I don’t waste my time trying to be king of the mountain. Or saying, “Here I am at, on the pinnacle, and I can take in the panorama.” Sure, for a second you breathe in this rarified air. But keep looking up, because the next mountain is waiting for you to scale, and then the next, and then the next, and then the next, and then the next.

On iPhones and BlackBerrys
One of the reasons why I do not have a gadget: Our young people spend their lives like this [looks down into his hands]. They have to invent something to make you do that [looks up at the ceiling]. You’re missing out on humanity. There’s no light in there. There’s no enlightenment in there.

On Other Ways of Avoiding Enlightenment
We’ll nail people to crosses not to be enlightened. We’ll break their bodies on racks not to be enlightened, we’ll work out any sort of Ponzi schemes not to be enlightened. We’ll print as much money as we want until it’s worthless to avoid being enlightened. When did you ever see light come out of a dollar bill? Never. And you never will, ‘cause there’s no light in there. War is not the answer. Money is not the answer. Enlightenment is the answer.

On Barack Obama
He’s a smart guy. But he’s not enlightened, either. He’s throwing money after the same problem we’ve been throwing money after. Guys, haven’t you figured this out yet? No one will even touch it; no one will even say the word “enlightened,” ‘cause they’re afraid of being dismissed as naïve, dismissed as anti-capitalist, dismissed as pinko-communist, socialist, whatever. You know, “faggot” …

On the Middle East
The truth is, resources are infinite. There’s enough for everybody. If the deserts of Israel can bloom, why can’t the deserts of Sudan bloom? [As for Israel’s problems], that’s the illusion. There are only winners. There’re losers only because we believe there is not enough to go around, but there is enough to go around. If the motherfuckers stop hoarding.

On Global Warming
We talk about saving the planet, but the planet’s taking care of itself. The planet is saying, look, you folks are young. We do this every 25,000 years.

On the Bard
To thine own self be true. Yeah. And thou cant’st be false to anyone. That’s another one of those immutable laws of the universe. Shakespeare smoked marijuana. Of course, they’re not gonna tell you that.

Martha Stewart Living’s New Fashion Section Is Kind of Great

Martha's staff modeling.

Martha Stewart Living launched a fashion section for the April issue. But don't WTF just yet, because this was a long time coming. We see Martha at fashion shows and fashion parties regularly. And don't forget — she used to be a model and even had Valentino on her talk show last week. So she likes making bumblebee cupcakes and growing herbs on her windowsill — she's still a fashion lady. Not the same kind of fashion lady as Carine Roitfeld, but a fashion lady nonetheless.

Martha's new fashion section could not be more MObama if the First Lady posed for it herself. And that's a good thing. Even though we love the fantasy fashion no one would ever wear in real life that appears on the pages of French Vogue and W, we appreciate Martha's mom-ish fashion philosophy. "I need my clothes to be wearable. I prefer unfussy pieces that are elegant in their simplicity," she tells Stylelist. "My advice is to stick to classic styles that fit rather than getting caught up in trends. Remember, less is more. It is best to have a few pieces that fit well rather than a closet full of clothing that doesn't!" Sound advice for so many working moms and women like MObama around the country, even if every Real Housewife in history disagrees (and who looks classier?).

Martha's first spread, called Jackets Required, showcases spring blazers and short coats. Executive editor Vicky Lowry said the aim of the section is not to cover trends, but to problem-solve. Martha's readers may go from the vegetable garden to the office to soccer practice to a dinner party, but that doesn't mean they can't and shouldn't look good or that they should feel bad for caring about looking good. Instead of models, Martha shot her staff. Real people — imagine that! They selected pieces by designers ranging from Ralph Lauren to J.Crew — the classic MObama high-low mix.

So Martha's delivering clothes for real women with the message that it's okay — empowering even — to invest time in looking good, even if being a great mom and keeping an immaculate house are one's highest priorities. Martha said she might model, herself, in a future spread. One thing's for sure: She'd be remiss not to include a spread on dog fashion.

Library Apologizes to Breast-feeding Mom

The Brooklyn Public Library was forced to apologize to Danielle Glanvill after a security guard scolded her for breast-feeding her 2-month-old daughter, Anais Leslie Caillet (ahem), in the children's section recently. "She was uncomfortable with the flesh of my breast being exposed and told me what I was doing was 'inappropriate in front of the children,'" Glanvill told the Post. "But the children were fine with it. I said, 'How do you think they ate when they were young?'" Um, probably like most civilized babies, such as Daily Intel, who ate with a fork from day one and therefore doesn't ever have to, as a grown-up, be traumatized by the idea that they once did that to their mom. God, what is wrong with these people? [NYP]

Australia No Longer An Option

Sometimes — okay, often — we worry about the world devolving into chaos. And when we get particularly worked up (like when we read something like this), we start wondering where we would go. Like, what's the escape hatch? Canada is the easiest option, but it's cold and full of Canadians there. But Australia — ahhh, that's the answer. A continent unto itself, overflowing with natural resources, kangaroos, and Elle Macpherson look-alikes. It's a comfort knowing that, if it all goes kaplooey here, we could always, er, run and take cover in the land Down Under, where women glow and men...do whatever it is they do. Hang out on the beach eating Vegemite sandwiches and whatnot.

Which is why we were disturbed to read about the "bikie brawl" that broke out at Sydney Airport over the weekend.

Apparently, bike gangs, or as they call them, "bikies," are becoming a problem in Australian cities, where they traffic in drugs and violence. This weekend's hostilities started on a flight from Melbourne and involved two warring biker groups, one of whom telephoned from the air for reinforcements. When the plane landed, a mêlée broke out, lasting for fifteen minutes.

Bikies waiting at the gate had apparently smuggled "knives and knuckle dusters" past security, though much of the fighting involved metal stanchions being wielded like swords. One death ensued, possibly caused when one combatant battered a stanchion into the head of a prone victim. In the aftermath of the incident, two gang-related murders were reported in Canberra, and "high-ranking Sydney bikie Mahmoud Dib" was under arrest.

Astro Boy Teaser Trailer Voiced by Familiar Dead Person

Tagline: "In this secret land, the world's top scientist is building his most incredible creation."

Translation: Did someone figure out how to reanimate Don LaFontaine?

The Verdict: No really, we'd like to know! The famed voice-over artist passed away back on September 1, but seeing how his distinctive voice continues to crop up in brand-new trailers a good six months after he shuffled off this mortal coil, we can only assume that he laid down a 2pac/Makaveli-sized library of "In a world where ... " phrases that movie studios will be robbing for decades to come. Now that we've covered that minor rant, we've realized there's not much to say about the new computer-animated adaptation of the famed Japanese manga: A robotic Pinocchio knockoff (voiced by Freddie Highmore) gets built by a lonely yet mad genius scientist (Nicolas Cage) and discovers that flying around the city firing lasers at bad guys is everything it's cracked up to be ... AND MORE!

David Letterman’s Truck Got Stuck in the Mud on the Way to His Wedding

People magazine, desperate to recover from the shame of being scooped on a celebrity wedding by the celebrity himself, swiftly dispatched reporters to Choteau, Montana, today to dig up all they could about David Letterman's surprise nuptials with his longtime girlfriend, Regina Lasko. Unfortunately, there wasn't all that much to find out. The bride wore a navy suit with a rose corsage, and the groom "was dressed neatly, despite the fact that his truck had gotten stuck in the mud on the way to the ceremony." They wed in the presence of their 5-year-old half-famous son, Harry, and friends Genevieve and Lee Barhaugh. Desperate to add a sense of gravitas (and/or dish) to the situation, People did its best to punch up the detail:

Letterman, 61, and Lasko, 48, quietly arrived — with their 5-year-old son Harry in tow — at the three-story Teton County Courthouse, which stands in the middle of Main Ave. in Choteau. There in the 103-year-old building, built of sandstone quarried from nearby Rattlesnake Butte and surrounded by fir trees, the couple filled out the license application.

What, you think writing muscles bulked up by events like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes's Armani-designed wedding in a candle-filled fifteenth-century Italian castle aren't going to flex just because it was a boring old trip to the courthouse?

We Just Shared a Moment With Allie From The City

Offices may be the least exciting places on earth, but there's one good thing about ours: It's one floor above Splashlight studios, where celebrities and models we sometimes recognize go for photo shoots. A casting is taking place today (we hear it's for either Neiman Marcus or Frédéric Fekkai), because we saw Sarah Stephens, Crystal Renn, and The City's Allie Crandell going out of the building. As fate would have it, we shared a moment with Allie when returning from a Starbucks run just now. She emerged from the building looking tanned and smiling — nay, glowing. She came right up to us, as if by magnetic force, and (gasp) asked if we knew where Starbucks was. We gave her directions and added (hopefully not in a creepy overly fan-y way) that we love her on The City. Before we could ask if she still talked to Adam and tell her women are goddesses who shouldn't put up with cheaters, she ran off. She must be busy on the casting circuit these days. Good for her!

Jamie Johnson Understands, But Pities, Social Climbers

Before the recession, he used to keep candy for them in his coat pockets. Now, all they get is lint and scorn.

Recently, baby-powder heir Jamie Johnson received an odd text from a friend. "In this post-Madoff era, I am re-evaluating everyone. It is difficult for me to trust, or like, anyone I haven't known for a very long time, or have worked with closely," the friend warned. "I was recently asked to write a letter for someone I didn't know that well for consideration as a summer member at my club. Needless to say, I declined." Jamie took this to mean that "many of the people I think of as rich may no longer have any money." We're not sure that's exactly what it meant, but we like that this is the interpretation that Jamie made. Had we received this text, we would have interpreted it to mean: "Someone should inflate my colon and use it to make balloon animals for needy children. ASAP, pls."

Needless to say, this got Jamie Johnson thinking.

See, Jamie Johnson has made something of a career of thinking about what other rich people think. Do they secretly like recessions? Are Wasps back? And what do they think of Jews? In fact, his entire series of online columns will seriously keep you up at night, your head filled with wondering. Or maybe world-loathing. Listen, it could be worse — he could be thinking about what rich people think about sex.

This week, Jamie is pondering social climbers, who are in a bit of a pickle over this whole bad economy thing:

Hobbnobers [sic] of all kinds are terrified over what their associations might have come to mean. Friends who were previously valuable assets could suddenly function as dangerous liabilities. In affluent communities, where each member is keenly aware of his or her place within the Byzantine order, attracting the right friends is a blood sport. Chumming up to influential figures who are in a position to help can determine the course of an entire life. A high-paying job, membership at the most exclusive clubs, enrollment for children at the best private schools—these rewards are granted almost exclusively to winners at the game of making friends.

Recently, though, the instability in the financial markets and the outright collapse of several venerable investment houses have befuddled even the most talented social climbers and left their compasses spinning. The blow is especially damaging to people on the periphery of affluent circles. As the least established elites, they are more dependent on high-status affiliations than anyone.

Phew! We're glad we're not rich, because if we were we'd have to worry about the plight of people we're worried might want to be our friends for the wrong reason. It's just so stressful! Also, apparently, we'd think that the entire course of our lives would depend upon fake friendships, and that we were incapable of getting good jobs or educations without them.

Peter Bjorn and John’s John Eriksson Tells Us About His New Album, Lies to Us About His New Mustache

After “Young Folks” became an undisputed smash in 2006, it seemed you couldn’t turn around without running into Peter, Bjorn, or John. But since the Swedish trio released last year’s mostly instrumental Seaside Rock, they’ve managed to slide back under the radar. Their new effort, Living Thing, out next week, may change that. Vulture spoke with drummer John Eriksson about hit songs, playing with Kanye, and the possibility that the new Peter Bjorn and John album will be recorded on a crocodile farm.

Seaside Rock was a difficult album. Was that a conscious decision?
It kind of just happened. After we did it, then we stopped to think, that was actually a good thing. Just to get rid of that hit-band feeling, that feeling we’re a band that produces hits.

When you recorded “Young Folks,” did you know it was a hit?
No, I mean, we thought it was a good song. I think we noticed when we played the first CD-Rs that we burned at a small disco club in Stockholm. After like 30 seconds of the song, four or five people came up to us and asked, "What band is this?" And then we realized that the song was something. And after that, it’s just like a strange dream or something.

The song was everywhere. Did you get used to hearing it in random places?
I think it’s always kind of amusing. I just happened to see the end of a Danish dog show, and it had “Young Folks” when the dogs were jumping. It was really good.

You gave your single “Nothing to Worry About” to Kanye to premiere on his blog. What’s your relationship with him?
He did a mix tape where he used “Young Folks” in the background, and he didn’t ask us for permission. And we thought this time, let’s send him the single right away! He played in Sweden, he had a gig, and it happened that we played with him. It was pretty funny. We sent him the song and it was a good way to promote it, on his blog. We thought about sending it to the White House blog, but his blog is a bit better.

What’s it like interacting with him?
It was really, like, you and me. Most people who like music are normal people.

The video for “Nothing to Worry About,” with the Japanese street gang, is amazing. Please tell us that’s a real gang.
Yeah it is, actually. It’s not ironic or anything. It’s not like actors — they do it, like, that’s their thing. Andreas Nilsson, he makes all the videos for the Knife and a lot of other bands, he found that street gang in Tokyo when he was out walking. And it’s really good with the song, cause it’s like rockabilly. I can’t wait to meet them. Or not.

In some recent photos, we noticed you guys had mustaches. Those can be a pretty divisive. Has there been any strong feedback about the new facial hair?
Uh, we haven’t heard one thing about it. You’re the first one. I have no mustache, but Bjorn has a beard now, and Peter has a clean shave. No mustaches.

Any plans for the next record?
We have like three albums in our heads. The next album is going to be completely different.

How so?
I think it’s going to be recorded on a crocodile farm.

Karl Lagerfeld Entourage Update: Brad’s Out, Baptiste Is In!

News flash: Brad Kroenig has exited the entourage of Karl Lagerfeld. Brad had been one with Karl's shadow for years, stepping out only when Karl wanted to shine the spotlight on him, which sometimes involved wrapping him in nothing but a scrap of fur for a photo shoot in the French countryside (if you don't know what we're talking about, go buy the Lagerfeld Confidential documentary now). Karl put out a whole book of photographs of Brad and even took him to Vermont with him. But it seems Brad has moved on, and Karl has taken a new nubile young fellow under his wing. His name is Baptiste Giabiconi and he's represented by DNA. Karl shot Baptiste for this month's French Vogue, as you see above.

Harriet Mays Powell met Baptiste when she was in France hanging out with Karl in the Chanel showroom. He's a sweet fellow and comes from the South of France. "He looks like me — well, maybe a better-looking version of me from a long time ago," Karl told her. (Meanwhile, Amy Odell was in New York staring at her fabulous computer and IMing the same people she always IMs.) Baptiste is already racking up fans on the Fashion Spot. "I feel he's more appealing than Brad K," one writes. He appears in spring campaigns for Fendi, Armani Jeans, and Chanel (which means he and Brad might have hung out at the shoot in Vermont together — scandalous). More photos of Baptiste after the jump.

Ben Bernanke Has Had Enough of Your Fool Questions, Congress

He's getting ANGRY!

A few weeks ago, mild-mannered Fed chairman and former econ professor Ben Bernanke confessed that "if there is a single episode in this entire eighteen months that has made me more angry," it is the government having to bail out AIG. The insurer, he said, "made huge numbers of irresponsible bets, took huge losses, [and] there was no regulatory oversight because there was a gap in the system."

And so today when, after Bernanke had already endured a long day of inscrutable questioning from members of the House Financial Services committee, Representative Donald Manzullo (Republican, Illinois) acted like it was his fault taxpayers have suffered losses on their portfolios so that AIG could be bailed out, Bernanke about lost it. "They are paying $40 billion so other people don't lose anything on their retirement plan," Manzullo accused. "That is what you are saying. That is what happened, isn't it?"

Bernanke said the aid to the insurer was provided to avoid a "catastrophic" collapse of the financial system that could have produced even higher losses on Americans' portfolios.

Give me a yes or no, please," Manzullo demanded. "Not one of you three can give me a yes on that answer or no?"

"It is a poorly posed question," Bernanke said.

"Well, then it is poorly written in your statements," Manzullo said.

Soon after, the question-and-answer session came to a close. Which is a good thing. Because if you had looked closely, you might have noticed that Bernanke's shoes and shirt had odd tears in them. As if he had tried to burst out of his clothes. Until next time.

New Poll: Women Would Rather Win ANTM Than Nobel Peace Prize

Oxygen TV did a poll asking women ages 18 to 34 if they'd rather win a Nobel Peace Prize or America's Next Top Model. Twenty five percent more respondents said they'd rather win ANTM. Also, 75 percent would shave their heads to save someone's life, which sadly means the remaining 25 percent would rather watch someone die than give up their hair. We blame Tyra for all of this. ALEC BALDWIN HAIRY SHIRT CHEST.jpg
Ironic Sans has gone ahead and created an item of clothing even Tom Selleck could only dream of: A t-shirt designed for men (or ladies, no discrimination here) with hairy chests. To model off this brilliant item of clothing, we've gone ahead and inserted our favorite pec-carpeted actor Alec Baldwin into the shirt, to see how effective it really is. The answer? Very effective. But before you get into a huff about seeing the likes of Robin Williams or Tony Shalhoub in such a get up, relax: Download this png file of the shirt and then drop your favorite hairy chested fella (or fellette) behind it in photoshop, and voila! Robin Givhan Feels ‘Disgruntled’ by Fall’s Eighties Comeback

We heart her.

Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan is trying to sell her Upper West Side one-bedroom prewar co-op. She's moving to Washington, D.C. — hopefully by May — to be closer to the glamorous First Family and incorporate them into her beat for the "Style" section. "I could not figure out how to cover the White House from New York," she told us last night at the Savannah College of Art and Design's Étoile Awards. She explained she'll still write the fashion column but will also cover Michelle Obama and the First Family. "I would say that [Michelle Obama] is extraordinary, but not exceptional," Givhan said. "There’s still this perception that somehow she’s alone. That she doesn’t have a group of ten girlfriends who are just like her. I’d like to explore a lot of that and just put her into a broader context and try to get at some of the issues about race and class that she brings up." Givhan said she'll miss New York, but noted that D.C. isn't so bad these days. "Everyone has assured me that I’ll be able to get a dinner reservation at 9:30 or later and they may actually deliver food to my home," she said.

On to fashion. Givhan feels "disgruntled" by the eighties tour de force on the fall 2009 runways. "I think that it’s just a lack of imagination whenever so many people latch on to something like that," she said. "And I think I would feel differently if I thought it was sort of lovingly being done well and with a certain panache. But I don’t think the world needs MC Hammer pants ever, ever again. Michael Jackson is back and he wants his clothes." Her own eighties wardrobe still scares her. "I mean, acid-wash jeans, hello? Hasn’t everyone had some horrible run in with acid-wash jeans?" Commenters?

Douglas-David Divorce Bonus Round!

Day five of the battle between Marie Douglas-David, the 36-year-old faux Swedish countess suing her 66-year-old husband, George, for $100 million, is well under way, and the Post has a snippet from the day's proceedings so far. Turns out they didn't have problems with sex. They had problems with texts! Marie's lawyer confronted George today on the stand:

"On her [35th] birthday you sent her a text message saying 'Happy Birthday' ... because you didn't want to speak with her."

"That was correct," replied David, 66. "I had no intention of speaking with her again."

Good News: You Can Give The Finger To Police Officers

MIDDLE FINGER CHILD.jpgA landmark Federal court case has ruled that a cop violated a man's First-Amendment rights by issuing a citation for giving him the finger three years ago:
No citations for giving the finger to police, judge says U.S. District Judge David Cercone granted summary judgment to David Hackbart, who said in a federal suit that Sgt. Brian Elledge violated his constitutional rights by issuing him a citation in 2006. "Elledge's response to Hackbart's exercise of his First Amendment right was to initiate a traffic stop and issue a citation for disorderly conduct," the judge wrote. "Clearly, Elledge's conduct was an adverse action in response to Hackbart flipping him off."
What do we take from this? Legally speaking, you should ALWAYS give the finger to police officers, in any context. Walking down the street, driving, at sporting events, during St. Patrick's Day Parades, at police funerals - Federal law essentially requires you to do it. Trust me - giving a cop the finger is an AWESOME idea. Maybe the smartest thing you can do. Just don't try giving the finger during any mid-90s MTV music videos.

Meet the New Girl: Elena Melnik

Melnik (Trump Models) at Diane Von Furstenberg.

We love it when photographers pluck a model out of the crowded haystack and thrust her into the spotlight. Steven Meisel did that for Karen Elson in the late nineties, and Mario Testino chose Jacquetta Wheeler as his belle du jour during that same time, too. More recently, Claudia Knoepfel and Stefan Indlekofer have lent their talents to Russian model Elena Melnik. Now, we know she's been in the industry since 2005, but it's her work with Knoepfel and Indlekofer that shows us that this 22-year-old is more than just a pretty face. Last year, Melnik worked with them twice for German Vogue (May and July issues). And this month, you can spot her in French Vogue. See for yourself in her Off the Runway gallery.

Meet a Walrus Who Actually Plays the Horn

By now, most of you are probably familiar with the famous Saxaphone Playing Walrus -- unless you yourself are a walrus who is afraid of technology. Sax Walrus was a gem -- one ton of blubbery hilarity rockin' out with a fake saxaphone. Saxy Walrus was genius davis -- so much so that it spawned one of our favorite mash-up videos ever, set to Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street". Today, God has once again laid a long-whiskered golden egg on our doorstep. Saxaphone Walrus was a'ight, if but for one important point: He wasn't actually playing the saxaphone. Meet Moko the Walrus. She's an unapologetic horn-playing walrus bitch and we love her and her giant walrus thighs:

Make sure next time you hear that very noise, you don't stop to remember how absolutely adorable Moko is, because you will probably get hit by a train and die.

State Cosmetology Boards Not Down With Fish Pedicures

Last year, John Ho introduced fish pedicures to the United States. The procedure involves sticking your feet in a tub filled with tiny fish that nibble away at dead skin, which supposedly feels like a bunch of ants running over your feet. After Diane Sawyer shared her fish-pedicure experience with the nation on Good Morning America, the procedure was set to be all the rage — until some pesky cosmetology boards deemed fish pedis "unsanitary," causing at least fourteen states to ban the procedure. Yes, enough salons were planning to offer the procedure to warrant a ban. The Wall Street Journal reports that salons across the nation that invested in fish and tanks before the bans were enacted now find themselves in "a piscine uproar."

But there is hope for the legions of unemployed feet-eating fish! Ohio decided to allow the procedure after an ophthalmologist who sits on the state board of cosmetology decided to try it out. "It seemed to me it was very sanitary, not sterile of course," she said. "Sanitation is what we've got to live with in this world, not sterility." Technically, the only way to sanitize fish is to cook them for twenty minutes at 350 degrees, explains an official with the New Hampshire Board of Barbering, Cosmetology and Esthetics, which outlawed fish pedis in November. What — they didn't have an eye doctor on the board to send to the salon to decide if it seemed okay?

Fish-pedi pioneer John Ho isn't worried about the bans, since the procedure is legal at his beauty parlor in Virginia. He hopes the bans in other states will turn his salon — which is sandwiched between a pizza parlor and a taco shop in a strip mall — into a tourist destination for people who live in states that are too square to allow them. Like New Hampshire. Recession vacay!

Sarah Mills Doesn’t Believe in ‘It’ Hairstyles

Sarah Mills.

British hairstylist Sarah Mills prides herself on the intimacy of her salon experience, best exemplified by the way she operated out of her Soho loft for years. This month, however, she trades in her home office for a 1,200-square-foot space on Worth Street in Tribeca. And sure, the space is larger, but the cuts are still top-notch. Miller, who specializes in short styles and won Best of New York (men's hair) from our magazine in 2005 , sat down to talk about surviving this economic mess and why she can't stand text messaging.

Who or what inspires your hairstyles?
Life inspires my hairstyles. And details in nature, in art, from old films. I have always loved children’s hair, the way that it has no structure but is so perfect.

How do you think the beauty industry is responding to the economy?
People need more than ever to look and feel good about themselves. Some may need to make their cuts last a couple of weeks longer, but they always come back.

Any tips for people to do salon-style hair at home?
A great blow-dryer. I recommend SuperSolano. Also, velcro rollers. They are a great way for creating volume and smoothness in the hair, and for sectioning the hair out of the way.

What is the "It" hairstyle right now?
I don’t believe in an "It" hairstyle. The most important thing is to create a style for the individual, something that works for them inside and out.

You just opened this great new space. Any more plans for expansion?
Some of my thoughts are to showcase up-and-coming artists and bring in interesting products that have synergy with the space. And I'm working on developing my own product line.

What's the first designer item you ever bought?
A Romeo Gigli burnt-orange silk suit from a consignment shop that later my mum made into lamp shades for me. The fabric was so amazing I could not part with it.

Are there any trends you wish would go away?
Text messaging. I think it’s great for business, but for our personal lives we are getting further away from the true thing we really want, intimacy.

What trends do you like for spring?
I love what Prada has done this season. It’s feminine, strong, and timeless, which is what I’ve always shopped for.

Are there any trends you wish would come back?
What comes to mind is Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sophia Loren. Late fifties, early sixties, when women were women — sexy.

Who are your favorite designers?

Katie Holmes In the Nude! Oh, Wait A Second…

When we first spied these photos of Cindy Crawford showing off her flawless figure at 43 in Allure Magazine, our first thought was "Oh snap, Tom Cruise is gonna bust a head open in this peace." Because, you see readers, we were convinced this was Katie Holmes in the nude. Witness:
CINDY CRAWFORD NAKED.jpg
You know... we're still not convinced that it isn't Katie Holmes. Look at those heavy lids... the lips! Cindy Crawford is like a half-Blasian woman. There is no way this is her. After the jump, we present to you the above photo. Uncensored.

Kids Happy Land: The Saddest Thing I Have Ever Seen

I walked past the following dilapidated, dirty, run-down storefront on the Venice Beach waterfront this weekend:
KIDS HAPPY LAND.jpg
I can't tell if it used to be a fun place for children that was abandoned and fell apart over time, or if it's some sort of trap to lure children to an empty room (and God only knows what that semi-visible piece of equipment is used for). I only know one thing for sure: it is not, in fact, a Kids Happy Land.

HATBY BIRTHDAY ARETHA FRANKLIN!

ARETHA FRANKLIN BIRTHDAY CAKE.jpg
I do believe this is the best cake I've ever laid eyes on. Oh, what a cake shaped like Aretha Franklin's headpiece must taste like! Imagine it... delicious ribbons of the lightest raspberry jam folded into light angel food cake (as in, what angel's eat) as the richest, most luxurious thick chocolate melts in your mouth and coats your tongue with -- OW! What the F@$!K. My tooth! (spits something out into hand) Is this... Is this a diamond? Those were REAL diamonds? Oh Aretha! (Waving fist as blood pours down chin) you've done it again! Happy Birthday Reethy!

These Robot Love Song Videos Transcend Space and Time

DEE D JACKSON METEOR MAN.jpgHow does one put into words that artistry and passion that is the work of one-hit 70s wonder Dee D. Jackson? One cannot. Her futuristic robo-synth pop tunes are so dead on that even today -- 30 years after they were released -- they sound like they're from another planet... a planet with far greater musical taste than our own. In 1978, Dee D. wrote this international megahit "Automatic Lover", a touching song about a space robot that falls in love with an Earth girl. At once touching and stirring, the song allowed Dee D. Jackson to do what she does best: Make ass-blowingly awesome music videos. After what seemed like minutes of scrounging, BWE.tv (along with tipster Erica Magrey who runs the space-tastic TagSaleCosmology blog) found the following handful of Dee D. Jackson's work online -- including one by a Brazilian imposter named D. Dee Jackson (!) -- and to be honest, we can't figure out which one we like best. Put your tinfoil hats on, readers -- you're about to go on a trip to "Where-the-f**k-am-I-?-ville": First up, we've got the music video for Dee D.'s original hit "Automatic Love".
That robot... such a passionate dancer. And so full of conversation! Please, please keep reading. In case you think nothing could top that original "Automatic Lover" video -- well, you're right. But here is yet another one, featuring an altogether TERRRRIBLE robot dancer who may or may not be Michael Winslow from Police Academy:
It's almost like he's struggling for air in his robo-mask, but no one knows to save him. Also, what I would give for Dee's fierce bish space gospel robe. The story gets altogether more interesting from here. "Automatic Lover" became an international sensation, so much so that Brazil introduced their own singing sensation to the world by the name of D. Dee Jackson. An imposter. See if you can spot the differences between the two singers... here is Brazilian fake D. Dee Jackson performing one of the original's other hit songs... about a Meteor Man... who falls for an Earth girl. (pause) It's called "Meteor Man". You will die:

'Grand Theft Auto' brings mayhem to new formats (AP)

In this computer game image released by Rockstar, a scene is shown from 'Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.' (AP Photo/Rockstar)AP - Rockstar Games has made an insane amount of money off "Grand Theft Auto." And the "GTA" brand has such cachet that you could slap it on anything and make a bundle. "GTA" kart racing? "GTA" wrestling? Rockstar deserves credit for not trying to squeeze every last penny out of its premiere franchise.
