"You are right about the first part to some extent though the second part isn't entirely true", smiles Piyush Jha the director of this Parzan-Ayesha starrer. "Even otherwise, the terror element is just a backdrop. Otherwise the film is mainly centered on the story of this young teenage boy called Sikandar (Parzan), who stumbles upon a pistol. How events unfold from this point on forms the narrative of Sikandar ." How about the messaging part? "No, Sikandar is not a traditional message oriented film", comes an outright denial from the young filmmaker, "I have not set myself up to making some boring issue based cinema. I can't blame the general perception though if one feels that Sikandar could be on the same lines. After all, you do get that tag once you film a movie in Kashmir." In fact the director of King of Bollywood and Chalo America insists that his own sensibilities do not allow him to venture into such subjects. "Honestly, I myself get bored with such kind of cinema where audience end up saying that intentions were good but the execution is boring", says Piyush, "Come on, what's the point of making such cinema which can't keep the audience engaged enough. I wanted to make a story which is exciting and keeps the audience involved from beginning till the end. Sikandar stays on to be a suspense thriller." Piyush believes that if at all there is a message to be conveyed, it has to be more implicit rather than explicit."You can convey a message only if you have your viewer interested in the story that you are trying to tell. If you try to hammer across a point, it will only end up hurting people's throats. I don't want to do that; I don't want to shout from the rooftops that I have made Sikandar for the sake of humanity", says Piyush honestly, "Sorry, those were never my intentions to begin with. More than anything else, first of all I want my audience to enjoy the cinematic experience and then think about the other subtexts." Also starring Madhavan, Sanjay Suri and newcomer Arunoday Singh in principal roles, Sikandar releases all over on 27th March.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 25 Mar 2009 | 10:32 am Riya Sen on the cover of The Man

Every time a bio-pic is attempted, the real-life figure decides to step into the picture at the last minute with a long list of demands. So it has happened with Deepa Mehta's Heaven On Earth. The real-life wife Amandeep Kaur, the wife from Punjab who became a victim of spousal abuse after marriage in Toronto, and on whose story of domestic violence Heaven On Earth (HOE) is partly based decided months before release that she needed to have more prominence in the film's publicity. Aghast at the turn of events as this kind of one-woman marketing monopoly was never part of Deepa's creative strategy for a film on domestic violence, the adamant director knocked off all mention of Amandeep from the film and advised Preity Zinta who plays the protagonist and other members of the cast to not make any mention of a woman called a Aman. Ironically, the film's release was therefore jeopardized by the woman behind the harrowing plot claiming stakes in the project. But now in a sudden and dramatic move, Amandeep Kaur has decided to declare truce with Deepa Mehta. Says the relieved filmmaker, "We decided to sit and talk about our problems. Matters have been sorted out with Amandeep. Now she's pleased. She's back being a proud part of our project. And we're now again free to use her name in the film's publicity. My problem with Amandeep's claim was that HOE is not only her story. It's also the story of another abused wife Mona Gill. Amandeep refused to accept that HOE was any other woman's story. She claimed it's entirely her story. That was nonsense. How could Amandeep claim the entire plot to be hers when half the film is based on Girish Karnad's play Naag Mandala? HOE is also the story of hundreds of migrant wives who step into marriages with NRIs without knowing what's in store. In fact it's the story of any arranged marriage." Getting emotional Deepa recollects, " After a private screening in Kolkata, a father came up to me and said , 'How can we be sure that when our daughter marries and goes to another home in the same town she won't be treated the same way that Preity Zinta is in your film?' While the plight of women in my Water was seen as being too distant from contemporary lifestyles, HOE is ghar ghar ki khani. Domestic violence is not peculiar to any era or culture." Deepa's main objection was to Amandeep taking away the credit from the other battered wife Mona Gill. "I'm glad Amandeep saw my point of view. HOE is also about the importance of mythology to our culture. I didn't want HOE to be another film with about domestic violence. You know, the 'Don't hit me, don't hit me' and then, 'I'll hit you back' kind of 'liberating' experience.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 25 Mar 2009 | 9:33 am Preity Zinta shot with a real snake for a sequence in Heaven On EarthDownload Movie wallpapers When Preity Zinta had to share screen space with a cobra for the lengthy and dramatic climatic sequence in Deepa Mehta's Heaven On Earth , the director wasn't really sure whether Preity would be able to carry of the reptilian act without the actor succumbing to the fear factor. Recalling the harrowing episode from the shooting of her most important film to date Preity says, "I had to put my hand into a hole in the ground, take out this big long snake and not just hold it but also put it around my neck. It was a harrowing in the script. I wondered how I'd manage on camera." Preity had nightmares before they shot this crucial sequence. "Deepa wasn't sure I'd be able to do it. So she suggested a digital snake instead of a live one. It would've looked as authentic if not more, because the movements of a digital snake would be more controllable." But somehow Preity's heart and art were not in the artifice. "The whole film is about getting as real as possible. It didn't make sense at that late stage to suddenly swerve into a digital kind of filmmaking after Deepa and I had gone through so much to make sure everything was as authentic as possible." Preity shot with a real snake. "And it went surprisingly well. After I got over my initial revulsion and fear I was fine with the snake. People who have seen Heaven On Earth wonder how I could take such a long snake around my neck. But isn't that what true acting is all about?" The film has episodes from Girish Karnad's play Naag Mandala where the battered wife imagines the naag devta transforming into a caring loving husband as an alternative life to her nightmarish reality. "The snake is almost my second co-star after Chand who plays my husband. I couldn't shirk away from it." Incidentally, not too many of our Bollywood queens have shot with real snakes.
