Gillibrand Has Yet to Win Support of Democrats Who Want Her Job

Ten Democratic members of New York's congressional delegation have sent a letter to the state party chairwoman warning her "not to use party resources to aid" Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. "The members of the Democratic State Committee deserve to make a [Senate] choice without being impaired or prejudiced in any way," the letter states. It's about democracy, people. And freedom! Oh, and three of the signatories are thinking of running against Gillibrand, so that might factor in a little bit. [NYP]

Edward Liddy Must Be a Masochist

We almost feel bad for AIG CEO Edward Liddy, who clearly knew the shitstorm that would befall him when he wrote a letter informing Treasury secretary Tim Geithner last week that the company, which has Hoovered up approximately $170 billion in taxpayer money, was legally obligated to pay out $400 million in bonuses to the very same employees that wrote the credit default swaps that put the insurance agency into hock. "I do not like these arrangements and find it distasteful and difficult to recommend to you that we must proceed with them," he wrote in the letter last week. This humility, of course, got him nowhere. Despite his concession and despite the fact that Liddy, who was appointed to the post last year by his Goldman Sachs buddy Henry Paulson, is only taking a $1 salary ("My only stake is my reputation," he reminded Geithner in the letter), a pigpile of abuse ensued over the weekend, with everyone from Barney Frank to Larry Summers getting their hits on him in the press ("What's happened at AIG is ... outrageous," Summers said on This Week). On the Internet, populist outrage is snowballing, with one website even publishing a list of AIG executives' names with the direction, "Let's hunt down their home addresses and telephone numbers." That's kind of totally scary. Representative Elijah Cummings has called for Liddy's resignation, which we think is a completely sane and rational response. We urge him to make his first call for a replacement to Mistress Elizabeth's dungeon. There's got to be someone there willing to get paid a dollar a year to be publicly humiliated.

What Does Watchmen’s Disappointing Second Weekend Mean for the Future of Male Nudity?

Despite a heartfelt plea from writer David Hayter begging fanboys to see Watchmen twice (lest it flop and Hollywood "never allow a film like this to be made again"), the movie earned just $18.1 million over the past three days, a drop of 67 percent from its unspectacular $55.2 million debut last weekend. Presumably felled by crappy reviews and the fact that the original graphic novel's fan base alone wasn't enough to make it a hit, it may struggle to recoup the $200 million it cost to make and advertise. Does this mean Zack Snyder really did kill the comic-book movie? And, way more importantly, will Hollywood ever green-light another film featuring a huge blue wang?

Exposed penises have traditionally come up short at the box office — none of the movies tagged "male full frontal nudity" on IMDb were blockbusters — though history shows a definite upward trend in their maximum earning potential: Harvey Keitel's unencumbered peen in Bad Lieutenant was only worth $2 million in 1992; Bruce Willis's in The Color of Night made a limp $19.7 million in 1994; but Mark Wahlberg's prosthetic Boogie Nights doodle took in $26.4 in 1997; Wild Things, starring Kevin Bacon Jr., scored $30 million in 1998; and last year, Jason Segel's floppy member catapulted Forgetting Sarah Marshall to $63 million.*

But now, even though Dr. Manhattan's glowing cerulean wiener looks set to break the $100 million ceiling in a formerly dong-averse America, Watchmen will still probably be remembered as a dud. So, naturally, studios will likely be reluctant to finance another Alan Moore adaptation, ensemble superhero movie, or bleak, R-rated actioner whose success hinges on its ability to please fanboys — but will the film's perceived failure also undo all that our trailblazing pantsless thespians have worked so hard for over the years? Will Hollywood ever again take a chance on completely pointless male nudity?

If there's anyone with a right to be more disappointed than Zack Snyder this morning, it's definitely Viggo Mortensen.

Theyskens Finally Out at Nina Ricci

Run free!

We really hate to be the bearers of bad tidings on cloudy Monday mornings. But brace yourselves. Olivier Theyskens is out at Nina Ricci. After showing one of the best collections of the entire season, and perhaps that Nina Ricci has ever put out, the designer and the house have decided to part ways months before his contract expires in October. Before you start weeping into your Theyskens dolls (are we the only ones who made one?) WWD is reporting that the crafty designer has retained the trademark on his eponymous label. He's going to do his own line! We hope.

Peter Copping, a top designer for Louis Vuitton, is reportedly up for Theyskens's old job. But if we were him, we'd be wary. Apparently all it takes is one season for Mario Grauso to fire you, despite what the fashion world, and Anna Wintour, want. You have to wonder at the sense of a man who willingly goes against Anna.

Theyskens was rumored to be fighting his firing and refusing to leave. Perhaps a nicer offer has come his way? One that involves his own line and working for a more supportive house. Though if we were him, we'd take a nice long vacation before working again. And maybe go to New York. And maybe call us. Mmmkay? We can get ice cream?

Ron Silver, R.I.P.

The Tony Award–winning actor passed away on Sunday morning, after a two-year fight with esophageal cancer. He was perhaps best known for his work on TV in The West Wing, but he also had distinguished himself in film (Reversal of Fortune, Timecop), and, of course, on Broadway in the initial 1988 run of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow. Penélope Cruz to Strap In the Baby Seat

Castellitto's Way: Penélope Cruz is in talks for Italian director Sergio Castellitto’s Venuto al mondo (Into the World), based on a novel by Castellitto’s wife, Margaret Mazzantini. The movie, about a single mother living in Sarajevo, will probably not begin shooting before the end of this year, meaning you’ll just have to plan on getting your Sarajevo-single-mother action elsewhere for a while. [Variety]

Defensive-End TV: In the grand tradition of LL Cool J’s In the House comes Brothers, a Fox sitcom starring ex-Giant Michael Strahan as a retired NFL player returning to his hometown. Strahan's character has to work to reconnect with his family, especially his brother, played by Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, the Ed and Veronica’s Closet actor who was paralyzed in a 2001 motorcycle accident. For those concerned about the former football star’s acting inexperience, fret not: Strahan’s resume includes one extremely humorous Right Guard commercial. [Variety]

Finally: MacGyver is getting the feature-film treatment at New Line, with the show’s creator Lee Zlotoff and various members of the De Laurentiis family producing. Two TV movies starring original whiz craftsman Richard Dean Anderson have already been produced, but this project’s a bit more ambitious: Awesomely, New Line’s Richard Brenner actually said: “We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise.” . [HR]

Dreyfus Gets Happy: Richard Dreyfus has joined Mitch Hurwitz’s ABC comedy Happiness Isn’t Everything. With Jason Biggs and Ben Schwartz already cast as his sons, Drefyus will play the pushy, funny, and male-pattern-baldness-having patriarch of a family overinvolved in each other’s lives. Hmmm, sounds sort of familiar … [HR]

Community Building: Chevy Chase is set to go on his first-ever full-time prime-time series, NBC's Community. The show stars The Soup’s Joel McHale as a lawyer who has to go back to school after his college degree is deemed invalid, as often happens in real life; Chase plays another student, whose defining characteristic, apparently, is that he has been married five times. [HR]

She's Like a Label Boss: International pop sensation Nelly Furtado is launching her own independent label, Nelstar, in cooperation with Canadian independent label group Last Gang Labels. Fritz Helder & the Phantoms, her label’s first band, will release their debut July 7. Last Gang president Chris Taylor explained that Furtado will not be front and center in promotions for the act, but rather making behind-the-scenes decisions; in one example cited, Furtdao is depicted as being very concerned with her signee’s perceived degree of foxiness. Why Is Dick Cheney Still Talking?

Yesterday, during an appearance on John King's new CNN show State of the Union, former vice-president Dick Cheney said that President Barack Obama has "made some choices that in my mind raise the risk to the American people of another attack." Cheney argued that, by repealing some of the broad policies that Bush enacted to give the government unprecedented power and independence to secretly arrest, interrogate, and imprison suspects, Obama is treating terrorism as a "law-enforcement problem" as opposed to a war. (The new president has banned waterboarding, plans to require CIA interrogators to follow Army rules, and ordered the closure of Guantanamo and other secret intelligence interrogation sites.) Cheney called the Bush administration's policies "absolutely essential" to foiling post–September 11 attacks.

Here's what we're wondering:

1. For how long are newscasters going to allow Dick Cheney to cite these foiled attacks as evidence that the policies were necessary, when nobody will say what they were or when they happened? It's not that we don't believe there were attacks, but it's not an argument to say that you're right but you can't tell anybody why.
2. Why is Dick Cheney still talking? Wasn't the 2008 election a resounding referendum on why America doesn't want to hear from him anymore? Even George Bush, whose actual reputation is what we're talking about, isn't giving interviews like these.

Okay, okay. You know we don't really care about Dick Cheney and terrorism policy. You're probably wondering why we're really salty this morning. Here's why: The Times story about Cheney's statements was basically just a recap of the State of the Union episode. Who was it written by? A.G. Sulzberger, our most recent objet d'envy. Now he's writing TV recaps? That just hits too close to home!

While You Were Trying To Act Mad At AIG Despite Not Understanding Most Of This Crap

MacG
  • A MacGyver feature film is on the way! Who do you think is more excited, Patti & Selma, or Will Forte for the MacGruber SNL sketches magically becoming topical?
  • Charlie Sheen and his wife Brooke Mueller welcomed twin baby boys, naming them "Bob" and "Max." Which are short for "Babaghanoush" and "MadMaxMovie-o-rama Jr."
  • Lindsay Lohan is not getting arrested today. TMZ will have more updates on other celebrities who are also not getting arrested throughout the day.
  • Watchmen's box office gross dropped 67% this week. I'm guessing either all the hardcore fans saw it in the first week, or a bunch of people went to see Race to Witch Mountain instead hoping to catch a glimpse of The Rock's glowing red penis.
  • Following Miley Cyrus' claim on a radio show that she'll "ruin" Radiohead, a spokesperson for the band responded "When Miley grows up, she’ll learn not to have a sense of entitlement." Awwwwwwwwwww sheeeeeeeeeeetttt!!! You done got Radiohead'd!
  • Actor Ron Silver sadly passed away from cancer at the age of 62. Silver is perhaps best known for his Tony-winning performance in "Speed The Plow," his Emmy-nominated performance in The West Wing, and his criminally Oscar-snubbed performance in Timecop.
