Manmohan Shetty's iRock to release two graphic novels

Mumbai-based media ideation, film development and production company iRock Media is working on two graphic novels in the horror genre as part of their overall film genre development strategy. One of the novels, Bollywood of the Dead is expected to be ready by April and will be the first product from the iRock basket. Talking to Bollywood Hungama, iRock CEO Sidhartha Jain said, "These are Indian graphic novels for Indian audiences. More than people who read graphic novels, we are targeting the ones who have read comics when they were kids & haven't caught onto the western graphic novels." Bollywood of the Dead is currently in production and will be published before the release of iRock's first live-action and vfx-sfx film Shaadi of the Dead. "The scripts (for the graphic novels) have been finalized and we are currently in the design stage. We are also talking to publishers and a lot of them are interested because the space for Indian graphic novels is increasing," said Sidhartha. The graphic novels' story will be different from that of the film but both will be in the same genre. Sidhartha said, "The novels are interlinked with the films we are doing. The first film that will probably go into production is a horror-comedy, Shaadi of the Dead. We are targeting a particular genre and then introducing the genre to the audience through various platforms, in a phased manner." When asked about the foray in the publishing space, he said, "We are also getting into publishing content for the youth & kids. We want the reader to sample it [Graphic Novel] and enjoy the trippy treatment of the story. There are no Indian adult graphic novels in the market & this foray is a great way of getting into that space. In the kids' space, we will also be launching a picture-story book based on the novel & film 'Zudora'." Shaadi of the Dead, he said, is a youthful, funky horror-comedy. It will also incorporate a lot of visual and special effects (make-up, prosthetics, etc.). Talking about the projects underway, he said, "Ten per cent of our projects are animation. Fifty per cent are vfx-driven while the rest are pure live-action. The kinds of stories we are looking at require vfx & sfx as they belong to genres such horror, fantasy and adventure. Comedy and chick-flicks are also an integral part of our production slate. The budget of live-action movies will be in the range of Rs 3-6 crores, whereas that for vfx movies will be in the range of Rs10-40 crores." The company was founded by Manmohan Shetty, the founder and former CMD of Adlabs Films and ex-Adlabs head of animation & producer Sidhartha Jain in March 2008. iRock focuses on development of high concept and franchise worthy properties for feature films in both live action and animation. It is also working on an animated version of Andaz Apna Apna titled as Bananaz Apna Apna.

Freida Pinto may become the next Bond girl and star opposite Daniel Craig

Ever since Slumdog Millionaire won world wide recognition in the form of Golden Globes, Baftas and the Oscars, the stars of the film, including Anil Kapoor and Freida Pinto are both lining up in what may seem as the quickest migration from Bollywood to Hollywood. The first to be bitten by the H-bug is the sexy Mumbaikar, Freida Pinto. Having won the hearts of many on the red carpets the world over, the sultry actress who is now linked with her Slumdog co-star Dev Patel is on the verge of signing her biggest date with fame. According to our sources from London, the 24 year old actress was first spotted by producers during the casting for Quantum of Solace. Hollywood's newest and the hottest property has arrived in the form of Pinto. What's more, Slumdog director Danny Boyle is now being asked to direct the next Bond film staring Daniel Craig. Now if everything falls in place at the right time, Freida's chances of staring along side the blonde Bond may just not look like a distant dream. Why? Because it's Danny on the director's chair who'll may recommend Freida. Our sources from the U.K have confirmed, "Freida came to the attention of the Bond team when they were casting for Quantum of Solace. She was too young at the time to have a part as a love interest for a secret agent. But she has blossomed into an incredibly stunning young woman and would look perfect in Daniel's arm. Even the executive producer Barbara Broccoli is eager for her to join the cast." India is already known in the cinema fraternity as the world's biggest movie making country, then came along Satyajit Ray and Bhanu Athaiya who took the Oscars, followed by A.R Rahman and Resul Pookutty this year. Whether or not Freida will win an Oscar is a long dream but if she lands a role opposite Craig, it'll be nothing short of an Oscar. That's not it. Freida has also become London's latest pin up girl. First it was Danny Boyle and now its actor director Woody Allen who has signed the Indian actress in his new untitled film, which also stars Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin and Sir Anthony Hopkins. After basking in the success of his latest film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Allen is keen on signing our Indian temptress who is now termed as Woody's latest muse. The question is, will Freida Pinto attempt to conquer London after Woody's last three movies that were shot in the capital - Match Point, Scoop and Cassandra's Dream failed to live up to expectations? Will she be the lucky for Woody and Bond? Time, my friend, is a cruel mistress, and we can't wait for the right time to arrive for this Indian beauty.

Has Mahesh Bhatt ghost-directed Jashn?

Mahesh Bhatt who had taken retirement from film direction has apparently returned to it with Jashn. This move however was not by choice but out of despair. The buzz is that though the film is officially directed by Raksha Mistry and Hasnain S. Hyderabadwala, Apparently, Mahesh was displeased with the standard of direction and hence stepped in to save the film. Jashn which stars Adhyayan Suman and Anjana Sukhani has almost been completed, if that's not enough we hear that the Bhatt even edited the script of the film so as to make it more engaging. When Bollywood Hungama spoke to some reliable sources who are working on the film, they cleared stated the Mahesh Bhatt has directed Jashn. "Yes, Maheshji has directed the entire film. This happened as he was not happy with Raksha and Hasnain's work with the direction," said the source. While on the other hand when we contacted Raksha Mistry, she had a different story to tell. "That story is absolutely false. In fact I have received several messages from Maheshji saying that he has been misquoted. While as far as the direction is concerned, I did request Maheshji to help with a few scenes as they were highly emotional and who better than Bhatt saab to direct them," she stated. Further more, we also asked her about the changes in the script to which Raksha said, "The script will never be changed once the film has hit the floors and has completed so much. No normal person will do this, leave aside Maheshji changing the script." And were the music videos for the film have been directed by Mohit? "Yes, the music videos have been directed by Mohit as he is one of the best that I know of when it comes to making videos. This was a production decision that was arrived upon much before we even started the shoot. So at the end of it, Hasnain and I are still the directors of the film."

Aamir gets to see Big B's new look for Pa but Ranbir gets turned away

Download image as wallpaper The Big B had a surprise visitor at Film City on Saturday when Aamir Khan dropped in to meet him while he was shooting for Balki's Pa with Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan. Visitors are strictly not allowed on the sets of Pa. But who says no to Aamir? Some awkward moments ensued when Aamir showed up. But he was soon escorted to Mr Bachchan's van where the makeup man (none other than Stephan Dupuis who did Robin Williams' makeup in Mrs Doubtfire) was at it for a good four hours. And then Aamir certifiably became the first person outside the cast and crew of Pa to see the Big B in his startling prosthetic-induced new look. However there was a price. Aamir was sworn to secrecy literally, that he wouldn't reveal the details of Mr Bachchan's look in Pa to the outside world. The film's director Balki is paranoid about his leading man's looks leaking out. "We don't allow a single visitor, not even close relatives or friends of crew members on the set. Phones of course are a complete no-no. The next thing you know the look will be splashed on the net. Aamir of course couldn't be turned down. But yes, we did swear him to complete secrecy almost like a boy scout's cross-your-heart kind of pledge. We can't afford to take any risks. If Mr Bachchan's look leaks out the plot is out. In any case Aamir is a man who understands the exigencies of cinema. He will hardly be expected to leak out the look." While Aamir was lucky enough to get a dekko at the Big B's unique never-before look, Sanjay Dutt and Ranbir Kapoor who dropped in on Sunday were not that lucky. While Dutt met up with the Big B when the senior actor was not in his makeup and costumes, Ranbir had to be turned away after being appeased by looking at a photograph of the Big B's look! Says Balki, "We really can't take any risk about Mr. B's look. Once people get to know what he looks like the plot will be given away. This is why we are immediately shifting location to Malaysia, not because we require foreign location but because we need to shoot without the fear and embarrassment of visitors."

Subhash K. Jha speaks on Gulaal

The blossoming of Anurag Kashyap into a formidable storyteller who bends all the rules of filmmaking, acquires a startling new definition with this film about student unrest during times of intense politicizing. Gulaal emblazons itself across the screen as a deft definitive brutal and life-defining film on the culture of decadence in a typical North Indian. It spares us no room for niceties. And definitely asks the squeamish to stay away. With dialogues like, "If your father had withdrawn in time you wouldn't have been born a bastard", you surely don't expect Gulaal to be Sooraj Barjatya's domain, do you? It is not. What it most definitely is, a powerful and brutal portrait of a culture that thrives of bullying tactics. The homage to the cinema of Vishal Bhardwaj is rampant in Gulaal. Somewhere in the brilliantly-cohesive soundtrack we even hear the heavenly strains of Lata Mangeshkar's Pani pani re from Bhardwaj's Maachis. A strangely incongruous inclusion in a film where life is lived by the gun and the mantra for survival is deception and duplicity. The world of Gulaal is squalid crowded claustrophobic and potent. The writer-director spares us none of the details in bringing to life a world where unlicensed guns and unchecked lawlessness define the quality of life. This is the kingdom of anarchy. Enter at your own risk. In many ways Kashyap's portrait of a world on the skids is borrowed from the Sicilian mafia films of Martin Scorcese. The same disregard for human life defines Kashyap's collage of queerly egocentric characters in Gulaal. In the new Clint Eastwood film Gran Torino the aging super-hero says, when you kill someone you take away everything he ever had and everything he ever will have. In Gulaal human lives get snuffed out with anarchic disdain. The location and mood are perfectly pitched to deliver an ambience of uncouth vigilantism. Men who are mean because it's their only trick of self-preservation and women who scheme against unsuspecting men by using their ample sexuality, trip and tumble out of the crowded canvas as though they as much as the audience have stumbled on a formula to feverish glory. Kashyap's narrative provides us with no full stops or other occasions for a breather. The editing (Aarti Bajaj) is so relentless in its pursuit of variable moods and situations that the audience is often left behind in the effort to keep track of the goings-on.The soundtrack perpetually races ahead of the visuals, taking us forward into the bloodied trail to dusty death at a rugged and furious tempo. Shakespeare meets Quentin Tarantino in Gulaal. Then they both meet their nemesis in the creative orbit of Anurag Kashyap. With Dev D and now Gulaal Kashyap has proved himself a master of basic storytelling. He pulls the plug on cinematic pleasantries and takes us straight to the core of the characters, often rotting and evil but never any less compelling for being the way they are. Headlines heckle historicity in Kashyap's roomy and often renegade range of vision. The royal politics of separatism rubs shoulders with the politics of sex and power in a heady brew that the Shakespearean tragedies had patented a century ago. And yet Kashyap's stimulating and brutal cinematic language embraces its literary antecedents without losing focus on ugly facets of contemporary Indian life. Kashyap begins with college ragging when we are introduced to the callow hero Dilip Singh (Raj Singh Choudhary, earnest sincere and believable) who's locked up by a bunch of bullies with a naked girl (Jesse Randhawa). The duo strike an empathetic code that takes them on a nightmarish journey through the scummy world of North Indian politics where brother kills brother and lover gladly betrays love. Gulaal is many things at the same time. As a comprehensive portrait of small-town politics it bludgeons you with its lethal mix of grimy morals slimy characters and perverted politics. The stench of corruption is conveyed with the same intensity as the odour of sweaty bodies running through duty gullies in pursuit of the next victim. At heart Gulaal is a portrait of a civilization that's rapidly receding into chaos but thinks its just karma that propels them into annihilation. So make the best of the beast within. At the core there’s an unspoilt uncorrupted relationship in Gulaal, that between the aggressive student leader Ranajay Singh (Abhimanyu Singh) and his protégé Dilip. It's no coincidence that Dilip tells his soul-mate Anuja (sharing another agenda-less rapport in a plot where everyone wants something) that he feels vulnerable without Ranajay. Beneath the politics of power and sex, Gulaal hides a tender longing for bonds that transcend the barrel of the gun and the power of the phallus. It's been a while since we saw such a ceaselessly authentic set of actors playing characters who are completely at one with the director's snarled and dark vision. Outstanding in different ways are Abhimanyu Singh as the self-disinherited royalty, Pankaj Jha as the over-age college bully, Kay Kay Menon as the unscrupulous Rajput leader, Aditya Shivastava as the illegitimate heir of a subverted princedom who dotes on his kid sister (Ayesha Mohan) who eventually turns out be a monster in disguise. And then there Piyush Mishra as narrator/conscience/sounding board/resident-cynic and what have you. In fact Mishra plays so many roles and defines the chaos of the plot with songs that sing of old forgotten values in new power-packed parodic postures. Isn't that what Anurag Kashyap attempts in his cinema?
