Slumdog Millionaire kids to contest elections?

The Slumdog Millionaire hysteria is far from over even weeks after the film swept the Academy awards. While Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan are still basking in the glory, even the slum-kids who walked the red-carpet at the Oscars can't get over their excitement of being part of this blockbuster. Recently, two of the slum-kids who featured in the film (Azharuddin Mohammad and Rubina Ali) were asked to make a special appearance in Vashu Bhagnani's Kal Kissne Dekha and the kids surely couldn't have asked for more. They played themselves in the film and shot with debutant Jackky Bhagnani for a pivotal scene in the film. Now with elections round the corner, don't be surprised if you see these very tiny tots riding the current wave and campaigning for a particular political party, is what this artist seems to be hinting. After all, a leading political party has already bought the rights of the popular track 'Jai Ho' to use in its campaign so the day may not be far when the Slumdog kids would be seen shouting 'Jai Ho' along with political bigwigs. Multiple releases this month but why no publicity?

Even though this week sees only two movies releasing [Jai Veeru releases on Holi which falls on 11th March while Gulaal sees a conventional Friday release on 13th March], it's the week ahead that is turning out to be scary indeed. Reason? At last count there are at least five films that have been confirmed for arrival on 20th March. Unbelievable, but true! These films are Aloo Chaat, Barah Aana, Firaaq, Heaven On Earth (Videsh) and Straight. Ironically, the only film out of this list of five that has seen some kind of promotion coming its way is Aloo Chaat. A light hearted feel good romantic comedy, it is the only quintessential commercial film of the week and is expected to have audiences warming up to it. The other notable film of the week is Heaven On Earth (Videsh) in which Preity Zinta has come up with an award winning performance. The film is being released in its dubbed version sans any promotion and even if it intensifies over the next fortnight, it is hardly expected to excite the audience enough to make them walk over to the theaters. Moreover, the film seemingly has a serious theme to it which would only restrict the footfalls further. The third movie of the week is Straight and yet again it's the zero promotion factor that is hampering it's prospects. Starring Vinay Pathak and Gul Panag in the lead roles, it could have been seen some buzz around it but surprisingly the makers are choosing not to do that. Which brings us to the remaining two films of the week - Barah Aana and Firaaq. One can't remember when was the last time when two films starring Naseeruddin Shah were released on the same day. However, this is happening this year with the release of Barah Aana and Firaaq. However, both the films come with zero hype and publicity, which means that they may just about go unnoticed. Out of the two films, Firaaq may still do a little better due to its ensemble cast and multiple awards that it has won internationally. Still, if the makers choose to keep mum till the day of the release (in the same manner as they are today), then the film hardly stands any chance at the box office. This is not the only week where Bollywood gets cramped for space. In the week to follow, there are three films confirmed for release - Aa Dekhen Zara, Ek - The Power Of One and Sikandar, hence raising the count of March releases to 13 (if one includes 13B, Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge and Karma Aur Holi which released on 6th March)!

"Preity is nominated along side Susan Sarandon at the Genie Awards 2009" - Deepa Mehta

Heralded as the most imaginative director working on social issues surrounding the women of today, yesterday and tomorrow, Deepa Mehta is the creative mastermind behind films such as Fire, Earth and Water to name a few. Her films are known to create pandemonium amongst the politically incorrect society of today but her latest film Heaven On Earth AKA Videsh has brought the politically correct society to stand up and not only notice this extraordinary piece of story telling but also recognise it. How? Well, Preity Zinta won the Best Actress award at the prestigious Chicago Film Festival last year and is now nominated along side Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon at this year's Genie Awards to take place in Canada in April. Now with so much surrounding the film, Deepa should have gone all pink, but instead, the talented Mehta goes all purple. Believe it or not, the Holi colour isn't just coming off her face. "My friends have painted my face all purple and I am scared to get out of my hotel room and attend press conferences", she said. Exclusively speaking with our London correspondent and UK's Harrow Observer columnist Devansh Patel, the affable, confident and dynamic Deepa lets her demons out in this exclusive Bollywood Hungama interview where she reveals of her inspiration to make films, her aspirations to work with Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerjee, her next film with Akshay Kumar, her new find in Videsh, Vansh Bhardwaj, her coming together with the Oscar winner A.R Rahman and why she can deal with the authenticity of India far better than the West. Under what name is your film releasing across the globe besides India? Across India, the film will be released with the name Videsh and in the rest of the world as Heaven On Earth. With a story so strong and its message out loud and clear, do you think a change in the name of a film really matters when it's speaking of a universal subject? I am not the distributor of the film, I am a filmmaker. If the distributor knows that the change in the name is helping the Indian audiences, I will listen to them because that's not my expertise. Jag Mundhra had shown some startling issues surrounding a Punjabi woman's plight in his film Provoked. Are we going to see your woman, Preity Zinta, going through the same torment in Videsh? I must say that Heaven on Earth or Videsh is very different from Provoked. It's like what Shakespeare said - There are three stories in the world and its how you tell them that makes one different from the other. Yes, this story is partly about domestic abuse, but for me, the film is about the power of imagination. When reality becomes so grim, how can you use your imagination to liberate yourself? That is what the film is about. The milieu is of course the isolation of the first generation working class immigrant, whether they are in the U.S, the U.K, Australia or in this case Canada because it's the first generation that suffers the most. Whether they are in the U.S, the U.K, Australia or in this case Canada because it's the first generation that suffers the most. Films are tagged as commercial, art house and world cinema. What tag fits the kind of films you make or have made over the years? This is so bizarre (laughs). I don't think I fit any of them. I just write and tell stories. Only when a film is very particular, that's the very minute it starts becoming universal. I hope my films are universal. Let's talk about the word 'universal' then. How universally inspired you get to tell stories every time you make them? I am attracted to stories; I don't sit down and say - What is going to be my next film and what its issues are. If the story is generally about a subject that I wish to know more about or I don't know so much about, I get glued on to it. For example, it was the sectarian war in my film Earth which really intrigued me at that point in time; also, Rwanda was going on at that time. I just couldn't understand the whole concept of sectarian war. I wanted to explore it further and that's why I did Earth. I used religion to cover up the marginalisation of certain sections of the society, it's a misuse of religion by society and that's how Water came around. Heaven On Earth has a lot to do with and understand the word 'abuse' in a larger canvas. It just doesn't come out of nowhere. Everybody is a victim, even the abuser. The point is there is no black and white. That's what motivated me to do Videsh. It's not about issues but wanting to know more about something. Everybody is a victim, even the abuser Let's talk about your new find - Vansh Bhardwaj. Tell us a bit more about this talent. He is amazing. It's his first film. He was a lead in the play I saw, a play by Neelam Maan Singh Chowdhary. He did Girish Karnad's Naag Mandala. I was so blown away by the play that I used it in the film too with Girish's blessings. I think the theatre actors have a lot of depth and discipline. I asked Vansh if he wanted to be a part of my film and he readily agreed, and you put him with a star like Preity Zinta, nothing beats it. I must say, Preity was very generous to Vansh. The Best Actress at the Chicago Film Festival 2008 - Preity Zinta! Will she be able to surpass the best? (Laughs) I think it'll be really immodest if I said that this isn't her best performance to date and the other directors won't like me too much. But I think she is superb in the film and personally, it's a world class performance. Preity is also nominated under the Best Actress at the Genie Awards 2009 along with top international celebs, right? Yes, you're right. She is nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role along with Susan Sarandon. The awards are to take place next month in April. Do you agree that it rightly takes a director to suck out the best of the hidden talent from an actor in order for them to win an award on a global platform? And why can't other directors do the same? I think it's the work. It's not necessary that a director is very important. I can never forget Cher in the lovely movie Moonstruck. What a wonderful performance. Everybody was shocked that she could act like that. She also won an Academy Award for the Best Actress for Moonstruck and she went up on the stage and said, "I would like to thank my hair dresser". She didn't thank the director. It was a bit weird but what I'm trying to say is that, generally, good directors really take out wonderful performances. But for a film to do well, it isn't the director alone. It has to start from the script. What other films are you working on? I'm working on two films currently. One is a film called Exclusion with Akshay Kumar and the other is based on Sulman Rushdie's book called The Midnights Children. Any filmmaker likes commercial and critical acclaim. Are you content or hungry for more? The day I get content, I will stop making films. Contentment makes you lazy and gives you a false sense of security. If you want to make films, you need to be hungry for more. In your future projects, would you like to work with actors of your past films like Aamir, John, etc? I can't think of any right now. But I am really looking forward to be working with Akshay Kumar in my next film. I hope one day comes when I work with Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerjee. You're a Canadian citizen. Don't you get impressed with stories from the West as well? Yeah, some of them. I just feel that I can deal with the authenticity of India and the Indians far better. It's not that I haven't done anything in the West. I have. I think to get into the western mind sets is difficult for me, not impossible, but it's not entirely satisfactory. I think to get into the western mind sets is difficult for me What is it that you're trying to say with Heaven On Earth? That you can't be simplistic about it. It's out dated now that the West has a lot to offer than India. So if anybody would be able to revisit the fact that perhaps, they should not be so ready to leave home. As the character says in the film - Sometimes it's better to live in Hell than in Heaven where there is more self dignity. How did you celebrate Holi? I've got a lot of purple colour on my face from which I can't get out. It's scary because I have to attend the Press conference for the film too. I had great fun with friends and we celebrated the festival of colours with a lot of rang. You've worked with the music director A.R. Rahman before. But how about working with the Oscar winner now? (Laughs) Yes, A.R did the music for Fire, Earth and Water. I'd love to work with the Oscar winner now, you're right (laughs). He definitely deserved an Oscar. But we should never ever forget that he has always been a brilliant music director and just because the West has recognised him doesn't mean that he is more recognised now Sum up your film Videsh in one word please. Videsh is a celebration of the imagination.

"My character imagines every person's graphical character" - Imaad Shah

Imaad Shah, bedsides being the illustrious son of the versatile actor Naseeruddin Shah, has also carved a name for himself in the industry. Not many people know that he actually made his 'official' onscreen debut when he was a mere toddler. The good news is that, this guy, after delivering a memorable performances in Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota, Dil Dosti Etc..., is back with the film called Little Zizou. Bollywood Hungama caught up with this guy for an exclusive interview. Here are the excerpts. Tell us little about your background. What has been the journey been like in Bollywood? My background is that I have been doing a lot of theatres. It's not really a 'journey' into Bollywood. I just got a couple of film roles initially, which worked out fine for me. I am a part of the theatre group called 'Motley' for a long time. We are still working on a couple of plays. As far as my 'journey' into Bollywood is concerned, I did a couple of small roles in a few student-centric films, which was followed by my ad for Polo (the 'whistling' Shepard and the sheep ad), which also happens to be my first and last ad. It so happened that Manish, the director of Dil Dosti Etc... saw me in that ad and also in one of my plays, it seemed to work for that time. The strange part about it was that even though the film was thrashed by the critics, it strangely had a very extensive cult following. The strange part about Dil Dosti Etc was that even though the film was thrashed by the critics, it strangely had a very extensive cult following. What was your initial reaction when Sooni Taraporewala came to you with your role? What made you go for it? The script was fabulous and a lot of fun. To top it all, Sooni's knowledge about the milieu was simply terrific. It gave rise to a lot of possibilities. The character was fantastic. It also gave me an opportunity to work with lots of people. In a nutshell, what is the film Little Zizou about? It's a difficult task to put this film in a nutshell as it has got lots of characters. Basically, the film is about two warring Parsi families. One is a religious Parsi fundamentalist, which actually sounds like an oxymoron, but they do exist. He is totally loony about his whole purity trip. I play his son, who is a graphic designer by profession and is also totally alienated from his father. My character totally imagines every person's graphical character whenever they talk to him. I am in love with the daughter of the 'opposite' family headed by Boman Irani and his character is called Boman Presswala, an editor of a newspaper. Though the fathers are enemies, the children are great friends! Does that make it a Ek Duje Ke Liye, a la Parsi style? Yaa...in a way, it does (smiles). What was it like to shoot in real locations? All of it were absolute real locations. And trust me, the shooting was absolute fun. The most interesting part was that Sooni had a personal connection with many of the locations. And it's also the first time when a Bollywood film has been shot inside a Parsi temple. We shot at Grant Road, Gowalia Tank, bits of J. J. Flyover, two Irani cafes etc... The whole film is Mumbai-centric. The most interesting part was that Sooni had a personal connection with many of the locations You are also the Assistant Director for Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghaat? It was a very interesting film to work on. We have shot ion some of the most memorable locations. The shoot of the film is finished, now we are working on the sound and editing part. Overall, the experience was really great. I really got to learn a lot. Not many people know that you met with a train accident also? Trust me when I say that I really don't know what happened that day. All that I can remember is that I was on my way to the college. And when I opened my eyes, I just woke up in the hospital. It's only after I woke up, I was told all about the accident. I have no memory of what happened. Imaad, you are also a part of a rock band? I have been playing solo for the last couple of years. I have just got in a band now. Recent films that blew your mind? It has to be Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye, Omkara and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. But I also loved the music of Dev D. It's truly fantastic. Being a supporter of free online music, what are your views on piracy? I really don't know if my views on this topic will actually make a difference or not. But all that I can say is that the free file sharing on the internet does not really affect the musicians as much as it affects the big labels. The only ones who are going to be pushing forth the general consensus on the piracy are going to be the large labels. So, the musicians won't be complaining at all. I can give you lots of instances, whereby the local independent musicians are getting huge boost by the fact that their stuff is being shared free on the net. The only ones who are going to be pushing forth the general consensus on the piracy are going to be the large labels. Do we see yourself in mainstream Bollywood film, running around trees? On a lighter note, let me clarify that not many people run around trees. But I really know what you are hinting at. To which, my answer will be it really depends on script to script and commercial and non-commercial cinema. Lastly, since Little Zizou is a movie that centers around sports, your fans would like to know that whether you are a sportsman and which sports you like? I love football and I have been playing the game ever since I was a child. But having said that, I was a hard core cricketer when I was a child!

Clash of the Titans: Blue vs London Dreams on Independence Day weekend

It could be calamitous for two of the biggest films of the year. Vipul Shah's London Dreams which does not feature the director's favourite actor Akshay Kumar but Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan, is all set to clash with the new Akshay starrer Blue on the grand Independence Day weekend on August 14. But two big films during the same week seem suicidal. So Vipul Shah took his friend Akshay Kumar into confidence and met up with Raj Mehta, Head Honcho of Asthavinayak to request them for a change in the release date of Blue. Says Vipul, "It wasn't just any two big films clashing. It was an Akshay starrer clashing with my film. Akshay is not just a favourite actor a close friend and business associate. His business interests are my concern. So we did request Raj Mehta to shift the date for their Blue. Yes, they've agreed to release the film one week before London Dreams on August 7." Here's where the story gets interesting. The director of Blue, Anthony D'Souza shooting round the clock to complete the film insists that they're on schedule. "As far as I know they (Vipul Shah and London Dreams) are releasing a week before us. We're releasing on August 13 (a Thursday) which is a public holiday. The added holiday gives us the longest - ever weekend for a film to release and grow." However, Vipul insists London Dreams is coming on August 14. When informed of this Tony says, "In that case we'll both come together. There's no way we're pre-poning Blue. We want the long Independence Day weekend. Are we stupid to give it up because of competition? In any case London Dreams and Blue are very different films. I believe there's room for two big films when they don't clash in theme or star cast." However, Vipul seems to think it's suicidal to release both films during the same weekend. Last heard, Vipul was still trying to convince the makers of Blue to prepone their release by a week. "I don't think there should be a problem. Not with Akshay being part of Blue," says Vipul confidently.
