Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 12 Mar 2009 | 5:06 pm Danny Boyle has chosen short film Manjha to be a part of SM Blu-ray discThe Oscar winning director Danny Boyle will be releasing his film Slumdog Millionaire on Blu-ray soon and he has chosen a short film called Manjha to be part of this Blu-ray DVD release. Manjha is directed by Rahi Anil Barve who is currently busy preparing for his directorial debut with White Cloud Pictures. His forthcoming venture is titled Tumbad which is based on folk tales of Maharashtra with an underlay of horror. Rahi is in all praises by the who's who of the industry. Anurag Kashyap who is the Creative Producer of Rahi's film says, "Rahi Anil Barve is the most imaginative mind I have come across in this country so far. His imagination gives me a complex. When I met him the first time, it did not take me two seconds to say that lets do whatever you want to do which ever way you want to do it." Danny Boyle is also going ga-ga about this. Danny said, "I'm delighted to include Manjha on the Blu-ray DVD release of Slumdog Millionaire throughout the world. Manjha is an extraordinary film. With little resources it is visually stunning and emotionally captivating. Surprising and gripping, it's everything a short film should be, and I look forward with great anticipation to the director Rahi's next project Tumbad."Source: Indiafm.com News | 12 Mar 2009 | 3:51 pm 'Slumdog Millionaire' takes million rands in South African openingFollowing its recent sweep at the Oscars, "Slumdog Millionaire" raked in more than a million rands after opening at 20 cinemas across South Africa this past weekend.Source: Entertainment News | 12 Mar 2009 | 3:38 pm Hema Malini 'clans' it up on the cover of JadeThis was a 'theme' that was simply waiting to happen in the minds and hearts of the entire magazine tribe. We are indeed talking about the coming together of the 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini alongwith her two gorgeous and talented daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol, posing for the cover. And this 'Dream' has been translated into reality by 'Jade'. This issue is simply for the keeps as it contains never seen before images of the Mother-daughters trio. When asked about how did a South Indian cope in a North dominated film industry, Hema, in her own sweet ways and voice opines that "There is no north-south divide at all in the film industry. It's all in the minds of the public." She also speaks about her first tele-serial called 'Noopur', which was launched in the early nineties. Madame' Hema also answers questions about 'What's missing from today's actresses, How she would be remembered, What's her take on today's Bollywood...'to say the least. As we said before, this issue is surely a Collector's item. And mind you, if you were not a Collector before, this issue will make you one. Jade is the way to go!Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 12 Mar 2009 | 2:25 pm "I was just supposed to play the guitar portions for 'Aditi' song" - Rashid AliHis is a name you may not recollect, a face you may not recognize but a voice which you can never forget. He is none other than Rashid Ali who sang last year's biggest hit 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi' from Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na. Rashid who is a Brit-Asian based in U.K. was in Mumbai last week for the Filmfare awards. Bollywood Hungama caught up with Rashid for a musical rendezvous and got to know some really interesting anecdotes about this singer who is all set to take the music industry by storm. Rashid, you created a frenzy of sorts with 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi'. How did you bag the song? I've known A.R.Rahman since the last 7 years now. I've done a few concerts with him. I was in India when A.R. thought why not get Rashid to sing this song. Rahman is a guy who makes decisions on impulse and I must add that he has an amazing gut feel about things. Rahman is a guy who makes decisions on impulse and I must add that he has an amazing gut feel about things. When you recorded the song, did you in your wildest dreams think that it will go on to become such a huge hit? No never...in fact I was initially just supposed to play the guitar portions of the song. Then Rahman asked me to record the vocals and I just sang it. It all got done in one evening in Chennai couple of years back. I didn't even hear the end product for a long while. You were singing for a newcomer Imran Khan. What was the brief given? Abbas Tyrewala was present with Rahman during the recording of the song. Abbas has penned the lyrics so he just explained me the setting of the song which was set in a college campus. He told me that the guy is trying to bring a smile on his girl's face so he asked me to sing the song in a very happy and relaxed way. A lot of people feel that you should be the voice of Imran Khan forever. Your comments. Is it? It feels good to know that but at the same time I believe as a singer one should be versatile and that is what I am trying to achieve. Not much is known about you, could you share a little bit of your background? I am a Brit-Asian. My parents are originally from U.K. I was born and brought up there. Even now I am based in London but I keep travelling back and forth between U.K. and India every month. I am a Brit-Asian. My parents are originally from U.K. I was born and brought up there. How did you develop a liking for music? My mother was a semi-professional singer. Her name is Farida Ali. She used to sing Ghazals. She has worked with the likes of Ghulam Mustafa Khan, so music has always been in my family. How did you come in contact with A.R.Rahman? We met at a concert. Rahman had seen me perform and I guess liked what he saw of me. We kept in touch over the years. We also share similar tastes in music. Both of us are keen followers of different genres of music. Shortly after that he was looking for a fresh voice and he touched base with me. I first started touring with Rahman for his concerts Not many know that you are a lead guitarist...so what is more special to you, singing or playing the guitar? Yes...I compose and sing. They are both hand in glove. However the singing part always gets more attention and recognition but the guitar is also an integral part of me. I compose and sing. They are both hand in glove. However the singing part always gets more attention and recognition but the guitar is also an integral part of me. Which was the first song that you sung for Rahman? I sung a song for a Tamil film with Rahman. I also was a part of Bombay Dreams - the musical. Then I sang a song for Ada-A Way Of Life. However the OST of Jaane Tu released first and the rest as they say is history. How has it been working with A.R.Rahman? It's been a long time since I know Rahman. He is a thorough gentleman and a musical genius. He is so well-versed with world music; he is always listening to different kind of music. We hit it off when I was part of his world tour in 2003. Since then he has always been looking for a suitable song for me and when it came to 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi' he decided that my time had come. As a kid growing up, what kind of music has influenced you? To be honest, as a child I wasn't so much into Bollywood music. The people I grew up admiring would be Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, and a lot of jazz guys. I listen to a lot of international music. I have always been open to different kind of music. Over the years I have been also listening to a lot of Indian artists like Ustan Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Parveena Sultan, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd. Rafi Among the current crop of playback singers, who is your favorite? There are so many of them. The competition is really tough these days. I really like Sonu Nigam, he has an amazing technique. Sukhwinder Singh has a unique voice too. I have been part of live shows with them. K.K is fantastic and among the female singers Shreya and Sadhana Sargam are great. To be honest, as a child I wasn't so much into Bollywood music. The people I grew up admiring would be Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, and a lot of jazz guys. Which composers would you like to work with? Vishal-Shekhar have been doing some great stuff recently. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have done well for themselves too. I know Shankar pretty well, so let's see if I get an opportunity to work with them, I would surely love to. Besides 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi', name 3 songs that you wish you had sung last year? 'Khuda Jaane' from Bachna Ae Haseeno is a great composition. I also like 'Mar Jaawan'- Fashion (though it's a female number) and 'Guzarish' from Ghajini What are your future projects? I've sung a song in Blue for A.R.Rahman. Then there is song with Sajid Wajid for Ritesh Deshmukh starrer Jaane Kahan Se Aayee Hai. Besides that I have my album which I am busy with. Yes...you are also releasing your own album this year. Tell us something about it. Yes...I am currently working on my solo album. Apart from singing, I have also composed the songs for the album. A.R. Rahman is producing the album and it will be released on his label - K.M.Music. I am currently working on my solo album. Apart from singing, I have also composed the songs for the album. A.R. Rahman is producing the album. Finally...what do you have to say about Rahman's double Oscar triumph? Amazing...I still can't believe it. It's truly special. I played the guitar in some tracks of Slumdog Millionaire too including 'Jai Ho' and for the music of the film to fetch an Oscar is an amazing feeling. If anyone Indian musician deserved an Oscar, it's A.R.Rahman. He is a great guy, a good friend and I wish him all the luck for the future.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 12 Mar 2009 | 12:37 pm Harry Potter fans not happy with new film

Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 12 Mar 2009 | 11:28 am "I play a tomboy sort of girl who has indigo coloured hair & a tattoo" - BipashaDownload image as wallpaper With a star on the Bollywood Walk of Fame (we wish), kilos of awards and rewards on her mantelpiece, eight strong years of her relationship with John Abraham, she's been a mainstay on the 'most beautiful' lists for almost a decade now and a whole host of film projects ahead of her, life is good right now for Bipasha Basu. We also researched about the bong babe's 'thriller' fascination. Right from her debut mystery film Ajnabee to the present Race and to her newest next Aa Dekhen Zara, Basu has a knack to turn the thrills into chills. So before we got to talk to her over a specially arranged interview, Bips decided to add some frills too - It took us fifteen text messages, a few phone calls and two days to get through to her. But what added the thrill to our conversation was that the dusky damsel apologised on making us a bit distressed, not that we wished her to do, but she sweetly did, making us feel mortified. Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent and UK's Harrow Observer columnist gets up close and personal with the exuberant, fervent and coherent actress Bipasha Basu where she unlocks the mystery about the high point in her career, her latest film Aa Dekhen Zara, co-star Neil Nitin Mukesh, director Jehangir Surti, boyfriend John Abraham, her gruelling fitness regime, her best captured moment on the digi cam and why the Indian Film Industry desperately requires a casting director. To be blessed with both good looks and talent is one thing and to be also blessed with a beautiful figure is another. What sort of gruelling work-outs has the bong bombshell tried and tested for Aa Dekhen Zara? (Laughs) There isn't anything special. I've been following a very healthy way of living for the last five years. I got into working out right from No Entry. Everything takes time. You can't get fit in just two months. So I guess, with each passing year I've passed through different levels of fitness. Now I am in this phase where I am enjoying all sorts of activities. It could be weight training, cardio, yoga, etc. I try a bit of everything and mixing it up depending on the type of roles I play. For certain roles, you could be a bit curvaceous, sometimes you need to be a little more athletic and depending on that, I change my mode of training. For certain roles, you could be a bit curvaceous, sometimes you need to be a little more athletic Ajnabee, Raaz, Jism, Dhoom 2, Omkara, Race and now Aa Dekhen Zara. What's this attraction to thrillers Bips? Well, I have to thank Ajnabee. I never used to watch Hindi films while I was modelling, and because my first film was a thriller, it got me the much acclaimed fame, and there I was in the world of acting. I somewhat have this special love for thrillers and I love watching them. It's great to be a part of so many thrillers I've worked in. Do you think the mousey-girl-next-door type roles are passe, out, I mean? Mousey is a little difficult for me to play anyway (laughs). If I did play, I could be a very strange mousey girl. I can't be little because I am tall (laughs). Jokes apart, a girl-next-door role is definitely not passe. It has been an essential crux of quintessential Bollywood for years, and yes, there is a scope for such roles still but being stylist and glamorous has surely taken over, and that in turn is because the actresses are too glamorous now-a-days. Neil tried his level best for me to sing too but I told him that no one is going to listen to my songs if I sing This is going to be Neil Nitin Mukesh's first theatrical release in the U.K and with you adding the thrills and chills, it just adds on to it. Are you more anxious like him? I am never really anxious about any of my films because I enjoy doing them and I just leave it. Then it's the audiences call. I would want them to like the film but sometimes things don't go your way. Even if they don't like my film, I don't get disappointed and I move on. So anxiousness I don't have. I am happy because it is yet another film which is different and fun and I enjoy it even more when I work with new talents like Neil. I am getting to work with so many kinds of heroes and he is definitely a new kind. It was interesting. So how are the singing abilities of this 'new kind' hero Neil? (Laughs) Very good, and better than mine for sure. Neil tried his level best for me to sing too but I told him that no one is going to listen to my songs if I sing. So let's just spare our film with my voice for singing. I have no aptitude for it. But people have really liked the fresh take on Aa Dekhen Zara songs. ADZ - The Rising, the band was launched for the film. It takes us back to the band which Pritam launched for Anurag Basu's film Life In A Metro. Don't you think these bands should not be restricted to one film alone? Absolutely right. But they are getting a great platform to showcase their talent by providing music to the film and at the same time, we did the big launch to promote the band. The band is tremendously talented and to hear them live was like something else. I think a band with the film's music together is a great association for each of them. You cannot just tie them down to one film. Their work should grow, not stop. Download Aa Dekhen Zara wallpapers Any research went into playing a DJ? I have no idea about DJ's except the fact that they play great music and entertain a lot of people. The DJ part is the back story of the film and it's just one song 'Rock The Party' where we show a little bit of DJ-ing. When you give a profession to a character and a back story, it helps in a way to perceive the character and how he or she would look like or how they would behave. My role is of an independent girl living in Kolkata who aspires to be a singer and she is into music all day. She is a tom boy sorts, she speaks very firmly, she has got a great sense of humour, and she has an indigo coloured hair, a tattoo, wears funky pants and cargos throughout. It helps to style the character differently. What's the best moment you've captured on your digi cam so far? It was 30th of July 2008 when my niece, Nia, was born. I was in the gymnasium when my mother called informing me that the baby was delivered. I rushed back and there she was. A picture perfect moment. Even the smallest of the roles have got me some kind of appreciation, and I thank my audiences for that. Has there been a high point so far that you look back at and think that where your career has changed direction? Honestly, I've never really thought so much, neither have I planned right from day one where my career will lead me to. For a person who didn't want to be an actor, then, getting into it full time as a profession, liking the work I do, everything has been different you know. At various points of time, my first film Ajnabee, then Raaz, then people telling me don't do a Jism and still doing it, going into No Entry to do a full on commercial masala entertainer, then Corporate, Dhoom 2, Race, Bachna Ae Haseeno, I think the high points have been many and I've enjoyed every bit of it. No matter what I do, even the smallest of the roles have got me some kind of appreciation, and I thank my audiences for that. Brief us through the debutant director, Jehangir Surti. (Laughs) He is a very shy, sweet and a timid kind of a guy making this thriller. We always had to shake him up and say, "Jehangir you have to start cracking the whip and sometimes scream and shout on the sets". So I did a little bit of Jehangir's work for the first two weeks (laughs). I was the one cracking the whip because I was the only seasoned person on the set and everyone else was relatively a new comer. They were all really scared of me and that got them into a little bit of discipline. I had to act off screen too. I was the one cracking the whip because I was the only seasoned person on the set and everyone else was relatively a new comer. They were all really scared of me They say that if the casting of the film is right, you've won half your battle. Casting directors don't exist in Bollywood. Do you think they should? You're right. We still don't have casting directors in Bollywood. I wish we had casting directors and our business was well organised and functioning that way. But, the kind of stories we make, don't require a casting director. We make fun fantasies and sell them all the time and these are the kind of films accepted widely as Bollywood films. Definitely, we are having a change and are making different films but the numbers are very few. A casting director is a must for our movies now because we are experimenting so much with our stories. It's time for a change. Is it getting easier to juggle being an A list actor who is still single? I will be single till I get married (laughs) but at the same time I've been in a relationship with John since eight years. It feels like me and John, have been a couple for eight years, all going pretty and strong. I'm loving, every bit of our relationship which we are juggling since almost a decade now.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 12 Mar 2009 | 11:14 am Madhur begins Jail todayClose to six months after he last called the shots for Fashion, Madhur Bhandarkar is back on the director's chair. Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 12 Mar 2009 | 9:44 am Madhur Bhandarkar begins start to finish schedule of Jail todayClose to six months after he last called the shots for Fashion, Madhur Bhandarkar is back on the director's chair. He will be beginning the shoot of his prison drama Jail from today in a start to finish schedule that will last till mid-May. "Yes, the entire schedule has been locked and plans are in place. We are starting the film with a small 'muhurat' today following which we embark on a 50-60 day journey. We don't intend to take any breaks in between and wrap up the principal shoot by 15th May", says Madhur who is visibly excited about kick starting Jail that is said to be gritty and yet another realistic take on affairs. Yet again, there has been heavy research done on the film's subject with emphasis on bringing real aspects on screen. Whether it is locations to mannerisms of inmates to happenings inside the walls to the costumes - all has been worked upon with great precision to ensure that every frame boasts of perfection. "Last six months have been hectic, strenuous and quite productive too. Even as Fashion was being wrapped up, me and my team were already on the job", says Madhur Bhandarkar. "We already had some good material in place and the next step was to meet people who are connected to prisons in one way or other." And who could these people possibly be? "From a jail inmate to lawyers to convicts to bureaucrats, we went across the whole gamut and collected as much as information as we could to lend that certain authenticity to the film. Jail is a sensitive subject and there was no way I could play around with the subject or the screenplay. This is one film which I have to handle with utmost care", says Madhur who promises to succeed in exposing the underbelly of a world (read prison life) which is unknown to viewers. Jail, which stars Neil Nitin Mukesh as the central protagonist with Mugdha Godse and Manoj Bajpai in other principal roles, will be shot in and around Mumbai. Moreover, scenes will be shot in the same order as they appear in the film. Due to this, contrary to popular belief, it won't be the prison scenes that would be filmed first but some light hearted sequences. "We begin with romantic scenes between Neil and Mugdha", smiles Madhur, "As the character graph progresses, we will make a foray into the 'jail' location as well." Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 12 Mar 2009 | 8:43 am "Preity has delivered a world class performance" - Deepa MehtaClick above for more stills Deepa Mehta is ready with her new outing HEAVEN ON EARTH, which has been dubbed in Hindi for the Indian audiences. The Hindi version is called VIDESH. A lot many people are under the impression that the film is filmed in English and dubbed in Hindi and Punjabi languages for the Indian market. "It's filmed in Punjabi, not English. I let the subject material decide the language of that film. VIDESH is about a Punjabi family living in Canada and I couldn't think of making it in any other language," Deepa clarifies. A lot of film-makers feel that the film loses its original flavour when dubbed in other languages. "I agree," Deepa says, "But if the director is present all through the dubbing session, supervising every bit of it, it doesn't lose the flavour. I was present for every actor's dubbing, when we decided to dub the film in Hindi. The dubbed version is equally amazing." Everyone's talking of Preity Zinta and newcomer Vansh Bharadwaj's powerful performances in the film. "Preity has delivered a world class performance. She's electrifying. What I like about her is that she's so well prepared when she walks on the sets. Vansh is equally dynamic. I took the decision of casting him in a split second and when I look back, I am glad I took the right decision. He's an incredible talent," Deepa states. Deepa and Aamir Khan worked together in EARTH, but never got back after this film. "That's because I couldn't find the right subject. Aamir is a great actor and I really enjoyed working with him. I liked him in GHAJINI, he was terrific. But there has to be a story that excites both of us," she adds.Source: Indiafm.com News | 12 Mar 2009 | 8:35 am Film Fraternity honours 'Oscar Kutty' - Oneindia
