Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 10 Mar 2009 | 3:31 pm Rakeysh Mehra bows out of the race to make Guru Dutt biopicIt's now up to Anurag Kashyap to do the needful. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra who was supposed to make a bio-pic on the life and times of Guru Dutt has decided to bow out of the race. Speaking of the aborted project Rakeysh says, "I never talked about doing a Guru Dutt bio-pic. People kept talking about it. Nasreen Munni Kabeer had come to me with an idea on the life of Guru Dutt. I told her anyone would kill to make a film on the life of Guru Dutt especially someone with my sensibilities. Then she came up with a screenplay. I told her I'd make it when I am ready. This is something that crossed my mind 18 months ago. Since then I haven't even thought about it. As of now I am not ready to take on Guru Dutt." Rakeysh feels only one film on the life of Guru Dutt should be made. "And that too with the right intention and aesthetics and the right amount of sincerity. Only one person should do it, and all the others who want to honour him with a film should just move back and support that one project. Guru Dutt means too much to all of us." Rakeysh also discounts the possibility of Aamir Khan playing Guru Dutt. "I never thought of who'd play Guru Dutt. It never went that far. The script always chooses the actors. It's the script which chooses me, so who am I to choose anything else." Post Delhi 6, Rakeysh wants to direct a light subject. "Let's see what it is. But it will be a light film. And by that I mean a less demanding subject, not necessarily a comedy." At the moment Rakeysh says he's enjoying the run of Delhi 6. "The feedback and fan following is tremendous. For the first time an Indian film got so widely reviewed in the international press." Rakeysh feels Delhi 6 was badly treated initially. "So much so, that I started doubting myself. How could I go this wrong? It was a whole campaign against Delhi 6. I don't know who sponsored it. I was initially agitated by the response. Then I realized it was a new narrative and the audience would take some time getting used to it. Delhi 6 was being perceived as a summer blockbuster. But it wasn't a Singh Is Kinng. People came to watch Rang De Basanti 2. They've finally accepted the film on its own terms. Now I want to watch it with the audience in Delhi. I've just begun to enjoy Delhi 6."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 10 Mar 2009 | 3:18 pm Yash Raj Films ends distribution deal with Karan JoharYash Raj Films ends distribution deal with Karan Johar Entertainment conglomerate Yash Raj Films (YRF) has withdrawn its over 10-year-old distribution deal with filmmaker Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, saying it is a "purely business decision".Source: Entertainment News | 10 Mar 2009 | 3:03 pm Karan Johar ditches Yash Raj

Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 10 Mar 2009 | 11:07 am Subhash K. Jha speaks about 13 BAs far as horror in cinema goes, debutant director K. Vikram Kumar's 13B does take you on quite a scary romp without conventional props of the genre. As though watching poor Amarr Upaddhyay as a constantly air-played character in a daily soap in Madhavan's home is not scary enough, the soap's plot seems to have a direct bearing on Madhavan and his family. A jolting and original premise for a spook -fest shot (by H Laxminarayan and P C Sriram) in chromatic colours, gets us as close to the basic feelings of fear foreboding and doom as cinema is capable of getting. Vikram Kumar knows his Manoj Night Shyamalan and Steven Speilberg well enough. There are no attempts to create false terror through intrusive sound effects. As in Ram Gopal Varma's Bhoot, we feel a supernatural presence in Madhavan's home without being subjected to ghoulish visuals. But Bhoot erred by withholding too much of the horror beneath the calm surface. In 13B, there are enough moments of aggravated suspense and terror to keep you on the edge of your seat without toppling over. The entire premise of the happenings in a soap dictating the lives of those who occupy the larger space outside the 71-inch screen is explored with a fair degree of technical and intellectual finesse. Blessedly the narrative isn't the lead laden with thoughts on the spiritual axis that binds human beings with God and His opposite. However, the film does prompt us to question the way destiny destroys our plans of a blissful 'normal' life. Beyond that it focuses on telling a tightly-woven tale of domestic terror. No parts of the film are amateurishly designed. As far as creating an ominous eerie atmosphere is concerned, the director does so without one creaking door or ear-shattering sound effect. That's quite an achievement. The performances echo the normal even-pitched sound design. Madhavan keeps his pivotal role of a working-class man whose life is suddenly dictated by television on an even keel. Neetu Chandra as his wife blends beautifully in the fearful fabric .The rest of the cast is inconspicuous. But Dhritiman Chatterjee as the blind neighbour is frightening. Ever wondered why a blind man is so scary in a supernatural thriller? As he struggles with the dark, so do the other characters caught in the other-world where logic and rationale fail. Mercifully, 13B looks believable even when looking into the world of the supernatural.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 10 Mar 2009 | 11:01 am Karan Johar's Dharma Productions inks distribution deal with UTVClick above for more stills Karan Johar's Dharma Productions has signed an exclusive worldwide distribution deal with UTV Motion Pictures for its next two releases. Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 10 Mar 2009 | 10:13 am Rahman makes it to Billboard Hot 100 SinglesAs the Pop is growing stronger, will Classical fades away? No! It'll never fail. Also, he'll never fall; he's the so called 'Master' of the world... That's the tune that most Indians are singing after the recent culmination of the Oscars and the Filmfare awards. The one name that stands out among this multitude is none other than the musical genius A.R. Rahman. Following his double win at the Oscars, the entire Indian music scene has been put on the international map of tunes. However, the best as they say is reserved for the last, though Rahman has been felicitated by the industrywallas, how many of the commoners have heard of him? This was the exact question that has been answered with the recent announcement of the Billboard Hot 100 list of songs. Making another first was the musical maestro again as he was voted as the first Indian musician to be listed among the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles. This comes after the recent release of the Pussycat Dolls version of his Oscar-winning song 'Jai Ho' which quickly moved the single from number 100 to number 15 on the charts, with no sign of slowing down. Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 10 Mar 2009 | 9:32 am "If Kites takes me international, I'll be happy" - Hrithik RoshanClick above for more stills Hrithik Roshan, just selected by Forbes among the half a dozen Bollywood actors who have a name in Hollywood, was delighted and surprised when he was recognized on the streets in the US while shooting for Kites. "That was a change. It makes me feel good to see our films are crossing borders. At a bank in the US when you're withdrawing money you are delighted to realize that the person on other end of the counter knows who you are. Or salesgirls at shops...they recognize you and go, 'Are you...? And when you tell them, they go, 'Wow!' ...yeah it feels good." However, Hrithik is not courting international success with his first English-language film Kites. "I haven't set any goals for myself as such. I just want to keep evolving as an actor and a person. That's the only mission in my career. If Kites takes me international, I'll be happy." Ironically, Hrithik Roshan's Kites co-star Barbara Mori came to Mumbai and went without being recognized. Says Hrithik, "We knew it would be safe to get her down because she had come to Mumbai last year and attended a fashion show with my wife Susanne, right there in front of the cameras. She was here for a week and went all over Mumbai without being recognized. Nobody bothered her. She walked the Fashion Street and no one bothered her. So we knew it was okay to get her over."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 10 Mar 2009 | 9:29 am "I like being a Pinup boy" - John AbrahamJohn Abraham says the best thing to happen to him in 2008 was his brother's marriage. And the most unusual happening in his life in 2009 could be his first stage performance, thanks to the success of his 'Desi Girl' number in Dostana. "My brother's marriage in Romania was beautiful. Standing there at his wedding as his best man as he took the vows with his wife in a beautiful old church I felt so content. I was never happier. And I liked being the best man. Because I'm the best. People ask me where I'm going from here. And I tell them, I'm only going to get better." 2008 was a decisive year for John. He learnt to be funny. "For the first time I was really funny, far more so than my previous comedy Garam Masala. I'd say there was a 500 percent jump between Dostana and Garam Masala. I was completely clueless about comic timing in Garam Masala. I knew I needed to do let myself go to do comedy convincingly. In real life, I'm very funny. I needed to put some of that across on screen. Why do I have to be so serious on screen all the time? I decided to get seriously funny in Dostana." John still remembers the moment when he discovered he could be funny. "I was doing a scene when everyone clapped. That was the first time I realized I was really funny on screen. Now when I go to events people start giggling the minute I enter. That's the best gift I've received in 2008. The gift to make people laugh. It's just so beautiful. The other day I was at my doctor's. The assistant kept looking at me and giggling so much that she had to leave the room. That really tickled me pink. I found that really cute." There's no marriage yet with Bipasha. "And neither are we willing to speak that openly about our relationship," says John. "No more PDAâ¦public display of affection. We've reached a stage in our relationship where we don't need to flaunt our relationship nor talk about it with others or with each other. We're gone beyond that." And what about his other successful jodi with Abhishek Bachchan? John grins, "Our marriage depends on Ash and Bipasha. Jokes apart, Abhishek and I are not at all insecure about one another's camera presence. I'd love to team up with him again for Dostana Returns. Everyone feels our jodi shouldn't end. People haven't seen male bonding like ours in years." John is happy being Bollywood's no.1 Pinup boy. "I wasn't seen as cheesy. I like being a Pinup boy. God has given me the opportunity to be there. I should respect that. I owe my physique to my parents' wonderful genes." John says the secret to his 'sexy' tag is his comfort level. "I'm myself wherever I go, whatever I wear. A lot of us have a benchmark for how well-toned we must be. I had a very high benchmark. I'm a leader, not a follower. Not that I am always seeing sunshine up my backside. But I'm very individualistic." John realizes being an example for the young is a huge social responsibility. "Karan Johar explained what he wanted from me in Dostana. He said I needed a beach body. I didn't need to look like a body builder. I think my physique is achievable. I follow a strict diet. I eat very carefully. But when I go out, I don't create a scene if the food is not cooked in olive oil. I do have normal food. And I binge on special occasions like Christmas and birthdays." Going to the gym is a must. "It is a part of my daily routine. I work really hard at the gym. I understand my body very well. I know what to do with it to make it respond. I follow a strict gym regimen and a diet. But I believe I'm not just a body." Regarding the risk of his followers taking short cuts to get John Abraham's body, the stars says, "The use of unnatural substances is just not done to get a body. It leads to hair loss, high blood pressure, mood swings, loss of libido and enlarged glands. Stay away from short cuts." As a brand ambassador, John has his hands full. "I've a whole array of brands that have stayed with me through thick and thin. I love my association with them and they believe in me regardless of my success quotient. I believe an actor has to be exclusive in his acting assignments, events attended and endorsements." One thing John still won't do is perform on stage. "I've a strong resistance to stage performances. Forget about dancing at weddings birthdays and functions, I don't even want to go on stage. But now that I've such great songs to perform to it might change. If I could dance the way I did in 'Desi Girl' I think I'm ready for the stage."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 10 Mar 2009 | 9:19 am Yash Raj Films ends distribution deal with Karan JoharEntertainment conglomerate Yash Raj Films (YRF) has withdrawn its over 10-year-old distribution deal with filmmaker Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, saying it is a 'purely business decision'.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 10 Mar 2009 | 8:00 am More touble for Salman's Veer - NDTV.com

Nor is it based on Alistair Pereira's life. That's another rumour doing the rounds. How do these rumours originate?" Madhur is perplexed, "JAIL is a fictional account of a person who lands up behind bars and how his life goes for a toss." Very recently, Madhur and lead man Neil Nitin Mukesh visited Thane Jail for research on the subject. "It's a different world out there. I had never seen a prison from inside before and the experience left me stunned and speechless," Neil tells me. How different will Madhur's JAIL be from Nagesh Kukunoor's 3 DEEWAREIN? So when one hears of Farah Khan setting aside her resolve to relinquish the pleasures of choreography for motherhood, domesticity and direction (in that order) for friendship's sake, one's heart soars with joy. Debutante director Anthony D'Souza who shot a very complicated item song with Kylie Minogue and the rest of the cast for Blue, takes you by surprise when he says Farah Khan not only agreed to come out of her extended maternity leave to do the song she also refused to charge any money. "We've the cheque ready. But she won't accept it. Farah won't take any money for the Kylie Minogue song, although it's a very lengthy and taxing number. She says she can't charge me because I'm a very old and dear friend." Anthony and Farah have known each other for 18 years. "I first got to know her in 1991. I made ads and music videos. She went on to make a name for herself as a choreographer and then a filmmaker. I had decided she'd choreograph for me when I turn director. When this complicated number came my way I knew it was Farah's call. But I didn't know she'd insist on doing it for free," says the director emotionally. The number acquires a special distinction because it would be the first Hindi song composed by A R Rahman after the Oscars, and that too featuring an international artiste. "The number was very intricately filmed. It starts off with Kylie then all the other members of the cast are brought in. I'd have paid Farah any amount to choreograph it," says Anthony emotionally.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 9 Mar 2009 | 3:35 pm Four debutant designers with different aspirations at DFWFrom women empowerment to optical illusion, from cross-cultural sensibilities to the dark past of Indian culture - four debutant designers will showcase these themes at the upcoming Delhi Fashion Week (DFW) scheduled from March 19-24.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 9 Mar 2009 | 3:00 pm Parsi fire temple to be shown for the first time in a film in Little ZizouEvery time we wind up in a spot, there is just one thing we can do, turn to the Almighty. As for the film Little Zizou, it isn't stuck at any spot; however it has made a mark on cinema. Folks, we are talking about the first ever Bollywood film that has an entire sequence in a Parsi fire temple. Though there have been plenty of films based on the lives of the Parsi community, Little Zizou which stars Boman Irani and Zenobia Pressvala, created history with this sequence. Speaking about this sequence, director Sooni Taraporevala says, "Though we have extensively shot in baugs (colonies), in and around Mumbai, we didn't get permission to shoot in the fire temple. Shooting inside the temple is not allowed. So we had to create a set that was representative of fire temple. Luckily, both the people in the shot, Boman Irani and Zenobia Pressvala, were Parsi and they could perform the puja. So the entire ceremony and prayers were authentic." Little Zizou surely creates a record of sorts by not just having an all Parsi starcast but also giving a peek into the Parsi temple for the Bollywood audiences.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 9 Mar 2009 | 2:58 pm Care for your heritage, urges Rakeysh Omprakash MehraBollywood filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who is associated with the tourism ministry's 'Atithi Devo Bhavah' campaign, Monday urged Indians to uphold and preserve the culture, tradition and heritage of the country.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 9 Mar 2009 | 2:30 pm "I've been waiting for my son Azaan to show up" - Adnan SamiFrom Karachi with love...could be the subtitle of the beautiful drama that was staged on Monday when Adnan Sami's 14-year old son Azaan landed in Mumbai. The boy, waiting impatiently for his passport to be returned to him, finally made it to Mumbai from Karachi to meet his terminally-ill grandfather. Said Adnan emotionally, "I've been waiting for Azaan to show up, and this time not for me but my father. Azaan had school and passport problems. He finally arrived here in Mumbai on Monday at around noon." Adnan's ailing father had not been told about Azaan's arrival. "I wanted it to be a surprise for my father." And sure enough, Azaan's arrival brought a special glint into the old man's eyes. Says Adnan emotionally, "It took all off my acting powers to withhold information from my Dad about Azaan's arrival. But I'm glad I did. The happiness that I saw in my father's eyes was worth the wait. For now I've been sidelined. It's my father and son the Dada-Pota pair that's taken over my home."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 9 Mar 2009 | 1:33 pm Ranbir Kapoor finds an admirer in Amitabh BachchanTwo-film-old Ranbir Kapoor has found an admirer in none other than megastar Amitabh Bachchan.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 9 Mar 2009 | 1:31 pm Sanjay Dutt's Chatur Singh Two Stars to release this summerSanjay Dutt's political career may be seeing an upswing in the current season but his Bollywood journey hasn't come to a halt. Come May-June timeframe and his action comedy Chatur Singh Two Stars would be ready for release. Major part of the film's shoot has already been wrapped up in a single schedule held in Cape Town and only a couple of songs are left to be picturised. Confirms Ajay Chandok, director of Chatur Singh Two Stars, who has earlier worked with Sanjay Dutt in Nehlle Pe Dehlla, "The film has been shot at a very large scale. 90% of the film's shoot is already through. I am surprised though that some people still think that a large chunk of the film remains to be shot." He adds in a bemused tone, "Maybe they are not yet ready to believe that in our single schedule stay in Cape Town, we had completed the entire talkie portion of the film. Now we are just left to shoot two songs for the film." Why did the crew come back from the shoot for just two songs? Wouldn't it have been a good idea to stay on for some more days and wrap up the film? "The song's situation required a mix of Indian and foreigner dancers", Ajay goes on to explain, "There are around 40-50 dancers needed for the song picturisation and it didn't make sense to fly dozens of dancers from India. Instead, we thought of doing the shooting in Mumbai itself. In any case, foreigner dancers are easily available here." The songs, which are sung by Sanjay Dutt himself with music by Sajid-Wajid, are said to be the highlight of the film. Due to this, no expense would be spared to give them a grandeur look and mass appealing. "Sanjay Dutt would be back in a massy role after quite some time. Audience will love his character in Chatur Singh Two Stars and we are going to make sure that the film reaches out to its target audience. We should be shooting the songs either this month or in March." The makers aren't in any hurry to release the film though. "We should be arriving this summer. It is going to be a May-June release", Ajay divulges. Starring Ameesha as the leading lady opposite Sanjay Dutt, Chatur Singh Two Star also stars Gulshan Grover, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik and Suresh Menon in principal roles. The film is produced by Mohamed Aslam.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 9 Mar 2009 | 1:10 pm Graphiti to tap Indian folk stories for AnimationMumbai-based Graphiti Multimedia, popularly known for its Jadoo animated TV series, is all set to tap into Indian folklore on the animation platform. The animation and media company has developed a 60-minute feature for Children's Film Society of India (CFSI), based on folk stories from Rajasthan, Kerala and Punjab. Titled Krish Trish Batliboy, the film uses three distinct visual styles and animation treatments, namely, cut-out animation, miniature painting, etc. The three narrators- Krish, Trish and Batliboy take stage during interludes. Graphiti COO - Munjal Shroff told Bollywood Hungama, "We started research on Indian Folk art more than 3 years ago. After extensive work and we found that there are 40 different cultural zones in India and each zone has its on paintings styles, music and a rich oral story telling tradition, all waiting to be tapped. If one is prepared to take the effort and look hard there is a vast treasure trove of stories beyond mythologies and Panchatantra," "Today kids are becoming media savvy and are consuming media at a swift pace. The challenge is that if you want to connect with kids you got to use the medium that they relate with the most. Animation is their preferred medium given that most kids watch cartoons every day on popular TV Channels. You take kids to a museum and show them Tanjore paintings or Rajasthani minature art you will lose them within 5 minutes! It's because they no longer consume any visual content in a static form. But take the same art and present it in an animated form and in a good story context and you got them hooked. We too learned this after spending a lot of time with kids and talking to them," he further added. Funded by CFSI, the films will be distributed by the organization through its own distribution channel which includes a library, film festivals, to name a few. "The market for such movies exists not just in India, but in other countries as well. You can engage kids with great stories and beautiful designs. It does not matter to them where it comes from," said Munjal. The Fido Trade Graphiti is also working on 13 one-minute 3D animated short films based on Fido (popularly known as 7UP's brand mascot) along with its creator Joanna Ferrone which are scheduled to be aired on Nick-US. According to Munjal, Graphiti, which is now the authorized licensor of Fido for most of south-east Asia, is also looking at taking Fido on a variety of other platforms including gaming, TV series and features as well. Concluded Munjal, "Fido is a character which has been drawing rave reviews from all around the world. Even in India it's a character which has an amazing appeal which goes beyond the metros, he is known to kids and adult in smaller towns as well. Very few characters can claim such a wide based appeal. The Fido Xtreme shorts is only going to increase the popularity further.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 9 Mar 2009 | 1:03 pm Freida Pinto features on the cover of CosmopolitanFreida Pinto is practically everywhere. This Vashu Bhagnani film will now release on 1st May, around a month later than the earlier release date of 3rd April. This has been done after much deliberation as there were a couple of factors that had to be considered - a) Some of the work left in the post production of the film, b) The producers v/s multiplex revenue sharing issue. Confirms Jackky Bhagnani, the leading man of the film, "As of now, we are 100% sure about coming on 1st May. The date has been locked and the promotion is beginning as well. We should have an audio release in next one week." So what acted as a clincher for the final date? "We were waiting for while to get a crucial scene done at the airport which we finally did this Tuesday night. There were permissions awaited but finally things fell in place. The post production has taken a little extra time since the film requires a lot of special effects and CGI. For example, when I visualize a bomb, there are some graphics etc. involved. Now that we have been able to get the principal shoot in place, we can have the final stage of post production running and arrive on 1st May", details Jackky. Meanwhile, the battle between the producers and multiplex owners has reached it's second stage with the former party making it very clear that come April and no new Bollywood films will be released. While Kal Kissne Dekha was one of the first films to arrive on 3rd April, other biggies impacted would be Tasveer 8X10, Shortkut - The Con Is On, Jashn and Paying Guest. Says a source, "Vashuji [Bhagnani] has been with the producers association on this. Even though it's his son's launch pad, he isn't worried much about it being delayed by a while. He wants to set an example and is united in the stand of other filmmakers." With the tussle being expected to be resolved in next few weeks, the promotion of Kal Kissne Dekha will go ahead full steam only after the final resolution is in place. "We are hoping for the best here", says an insider from Kal Kissne Dekha, "We are passionate about the film but not willing to bend our back. It's okay for the film to arrive a month later. We will get entire machinery in place to ensure that the film gets its due and the right market once it arrives on 1st May."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 9 Mar 2009 | 11:10 am
