Farah Khan choreographed Kylie Minogue's song in Blue for free

True friendships in this industry, known to worship only the rising sun and spiraling sensex, are rare. So when one hears of Farah Khan setting aside her resolve to relinquish the pleasures of choreography for motherhood, domesticity and direction (in that order) for friendship's sake, one's heart soars with joy. Debutante director Anthony D'Souza who shot a very complicated item song with Kylie Minogue and the rest of the cast for Blue, takes you by surprise when he says Farah Khan not only agreed to come out of her extended maternity leave to do the song she also refused to charge any money. "We've the cheque ready. But she won't accept it. Farah won't take any money for the Kylie Minogue song, although it's a very lengthy and taxing number. She says she can't charge me because I'm a very old and dear friend." Anthony and Farah have known each other for 18 years. "I first got to know her in 1991. I made ads and music videos. She went on to make a name for herself as a choreographer and then a filmmaker. I had decided she'd choreograph for me when I turn director. When this complicated number came my way I knew it was Farah's call. But I didn't know she'd insist on doing it for free," says the director emotionally. The number acquires a special distinction because it would be the first Hindi song composed by A R Rahman after the Oscars, and that too featuring an international artiste. "The number was very intricately filmed. It starts off with Kylie then all the other members of the cast are brought in. I'd have paid Farah any amount to choreograph it," says Anthony emotionally.

Parsi fire temple to be shown for the first time in a film in Little Zizou

Every time we wind up in a spot, there is just one thing we can do, turn to the Almighty. As for the film Little Zizou, it isn't stuck at any spot; however it has made a mark on cinema. Folks, we are talking about the first ever Bollywood film that has an entire sequence in a Parsi fire temple. Though there have been plenty of films based on the lives of the Parsi community, Little Zizou which stars Boman Irani and Zenobia Pressvala, created history with this sequence. Speaking about this sequence, director Sooni Taraporevala says, "Though we have extensively shot in baugs (colonies), in and around Mumbai, we didn't get permission to shoot in the fire temple. Shooting inside the temple is not allowed. So we had to create a set that was representative of fire temple. Luckily, both the people in the shot, Boman Irani and Zenobia Pressvala, were Parsi and they could perform the puja. So the entire ceremony and prayers were authentic." Little Zizou surely creates a record of sorts by not just having an all Parsi starcast but also giving a peek into the Parsi temple for the Bollywood audiences.

"I've been waiting for my son Azaan to show up" - Adnan Sami

From Karachi with love...could be the subtitle of the beautiful drama that was staged on Monday when Adnan Sami's 14-year old son Azaan landed in Mumbai. The boy, waiting impatiently for his passport to be returned to him, finally made it to Mumbai from Karachi to meet his terminally-ill grandfather. Said Adnan emotionally, "I've been waiting for Azaan to show up, and this time not for me but my father. Azaan had school and passport problems. He finally arrived here in Mumbai on Monday at around noon." Adnan's ailing father had not been told about Azaan's arrival. "I wanted it to be a surprise for my father." And sure enough, Azaan's arrival brought a special glint into the old man's eyes. Says Adnan emotionally, "It took all off my acting powers to withhold information from my Dad about Azaan's arrival. But I'm glad I did. The happiness that I saw in my father's eyes was worth the wait. For now I've been sidelined. It's my father and son the Dada-Pota pair that's taken over my home."

Sanjay Dutt's Chatur Singh Two Stars to release this summer

Sanjay Dutt's political career may be seeing an upswing in the current season but his Bollywood journey hasn't come to a halt. Come May-June timeframe and his action comedy Chatur Singh Two Stars would be ready for release. Major part of the film's shoot has already been wrapped up in a single schedule held in Cape Town and only a couple of songs are left to be picturised. Confirms Ajay Chandok, director of Chatur Singh Two Stars, who has earlier worked with Sanjay Dutt in Nehlle Pe Dehlla, "The film has been shot at a very large scale. 90% of the film's shoot is already through. I am surprised though that some people still think that a large chunk of the film remains to be shot." He adds in a bemused tone, "Maybe they are not yet ready to believe that in our single schedule stay in Cape Town, we had completed the entire talkie portion of the film. Now we are just left to shoot two songs for the film." Why did the crew come back from the shoot for just two songs? Wouldn't it have been a good idea to stay on for some more days and wrap up the film? "The song's situation required a mix of Indian and foreigner dancers", Ajay goes on to explain, "There are around 40-50 dancers needed for the song picturisation and it didn't make sense to fly dozens of dancers from India. Instead, we thought of doing the shooting in Mumbai itself. In any case, foreigner dancers are easily available here." The songs, which are sung by Sanjay Dutt himself with music by Sajid-Wajid, are said to be the highlight of the film. Due to this, no expense would be spared to give them a grandeur look and mass appealing. "Sanjay Dutt would be back in a massy role after quite some time. Audience will love his character in Chatur Singh Two Stars and we are going to make sure that the film reaches out to its target audience. We should be shooting the songs either this month or in March." The makers aren't in any hurry to release the film though. "We should be arriving this summer. It is going to be a May-June release", Ajay divulges. Starring Ameesha as the leading lady opposite Sanjay Dutt, Chatur Singh Two Star also stars Gulshan Grover, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik and Suresh Menon in principal roles. The film is produced by Mohamed Aslam.

Graphiti to tap Indian folk stories for Animation

Mumbai-based Graphiti Multimedia, popularly known for its Jadoo animated TV series, is all set to tap into Indian folklore on the animation platform. The animation and media company has developed a 60-minute feature for Children's Film Society of India (CFSI), based on folk stories from Rajasthan, Kerala and Punjab. Titled Krish Trish Batliboy, the film uses three distinct visual styles and animation treatments, namely, cut-out animation, miniature painting, etc. The three narrators- Krish, Trish and Batliboy take stage during interludes. Graphiti COO - Munjal Shroff told Bollywood Hungama, "We started research on Indian Folk art more than 3 years ago. After extensive work and we found that there are 40 different cultural zones in India and each zone has its on paintings styles, music and a rich oral story telling tradition, all waiting to be tapped. If one is prepared to take the effort and look hard there is a vast treasure trove of stories beyond mythologies and Panchatantra," "Today kids are becoming media savvy and are consuming media at a swift pace. The challenge is that if you want to connect with kids you got to use the medium that they relate with the most. Animation is their preferred medium given that most kids watch cartoons every day on popular TV Channels. You take kids to a museum and show them Tanjore paintings or Rajasthani minature art you will lose them within 5 minutes! It's because they no longer consume any visual content in a static form. But take the same art and present it in an animated form and in a good story context and you got them hooked. We too learned this after spending a lot of time with kids and talking to them," he further added. Funded by CFSI, the films will be distributed by the organization through its own distribution channel which includes a library, film festivals, to name a few. "The market for such movies exists not just in India, but in other countries as well. You can engage kids with great stories and beautiful designs. It does not matter to them where it comes from," said Munjal. The Fido Trade Graphiti is also working on 13 one-minute 3D animated short films based on Fido (popularly known as 7UP's brand mascot) along with its creator Joanna Ferrone which are scheduled to be aired on Nick-US. According to Munjal, Graphiti, which is now the authorized licensor of Fido for most of south-east Asia, is also looking at taking Fido on a variety of other platforms including gaming, TV series and features as well. Concluded Munjal, "Fido is a character which has been drawing rave reviews from all around the world. Even in India it's a character which has an amazing appeal which goes beyond the metros, he is known to kids and adult in smaller towns as well. Very few characters can claim such a wide based appeal. The Fido Xtreme shorts is only going to increase the popularity further.

Kal Kissne Dekha confirmed for 1st May release

Click above for more movie stills After some flip-flop and a period of uncertainty around the release of the film, the D-day has been finalized. This Vashu Bhagnani film will now release on 1st May, around a month later than the earlier release date of 3rd April. This has been done after much deliberation as there were a couple of factors that had to be considered - a) Some of the work left in the post production of the film, b) The producers v/s multiplex revenue sharing issue. Confirms Jackky Bhagnani, the leading man of the film, "As of now, we are 100% sure about coming on 1st May. The date has been locked and the promotion is beginning as well. We should have an audio release in next one week." So what acted as a clincher for the final date? "We were waiting for while to get a crucial scene done at the airport which we finally did this Tuesday night. There were permissions awaited but finally things fell in place. The post production has taken a little extra time since the film requires a lot of special effects and CGI. For example, when I visualize a bomb, there are some graphics etc. involved. Now that we have been able to get the principal shoot in place, we can have the final stage of post production running and arrive on 1st May", details Jackky. Meanwhile, the battle between the producers and multiplex owners has reached it's second stage with the former party making it very clear that come April and no new Bollywood films will be released. While Kal Kissne Dekha was one of the first films to arrive on 3rd April, other biggies impacted would be Tasveer 8X10, Shortkut - The Con Is On, Jashn and Paying Guest. Says a source, "Vashuji [Bhagnani] has been with the producers association on this. Even though it's his son's launch pad, he isn't worried much about it being delayed by a while. He wants to set an example and is united in the stand of other filmmakers." With the tussle being expected to be resolved in next few weeks, the promotion of Kal Kissne Dekha will go ahead full steam only after the final resolution is in place. "We are hoping for the best here", says an insider from Kal Kissne Dekha, "We are passionate about the film but not willing to bend our back. It's okay for the film to arrive a month later. We will get entire machinery in place to ensure that the film gets its due and the right market once it arrives on 1st May."

"I had to tell Kylie to thrown tantrums on the sets" - Farah Khan

She came, she shot, and she (apparently) broke quite a few hearts. If there has been one personality from the world of glamour who managed to divert media's attention from Slumdog Millionaire to something else in the week gone by, it was Kylie Minogue. In the country for the shoot of a song and dance sequence in the multi starrer Blue, she was quite comfortably the 'woman of the week'. However, she wasn't the only woman who was the center of attraction since there was one more lady who was pretty much in the limelight as far as the B-town was concerned. The name was Farah Khan. Calling the shots six months after choreographing 'Desi Girl' [Dostana], the director-choreographer made sure that her dance moves mattered once more as she got together Kylie and Akshay Kumar on the same dance floor. As Kylie flies back to Australia after completing her shoot for the song, Joginder Tuteja catches up with Farah Khan and knows from her about the shoot, alleged throwing of tantrums by Kylie and her reunion with Akshay Kumar. Kylie, Kylie and more Kylie. Now what is so special about her entire song? Please, can you let go of the veil? This is a night club number which is supposed to be set in Bahamas. However, we have replicated the same setup in Mumbai itself. The song has an international setup to it and why just Bahamas; it could have suited even New York or Miami. When you say the song has an 'international setting' to it, what exactly do you mean? It means that we are not making a 'bhel-puri' by bringing in an international artist like Kylie and then making her turn into a Bollywood dancer. She is supposed to be what she is in real life and hence retains her international appeal. It is with the arrival of Akshay Kumar in the song which brings in an Indian element. A.R. Rahman has come up with another great track where the first half featuring Kylie is in English with a Western tune while the second half has Sonu Nigam coming behind the mike for the 'bhangra' portion. So does the song belong to Kylie or Akshay? The song belongs to both of them. They both have equal footage in it. While the first half has Kylie in it, the second half has more of Akshay. Where does that leave the remainder of the cast i.e. Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and Zayed Khan? All of them feature in the song as well though it's at a little later stage. Zayed Khan comes first followed by Lara and then Sanju. In fact Sanju's character in the film is the kind that doesn't get into a jig at any moment; hence his dance steps too are restricted. So yes, in a way, the song is mainly a Kylie and Akshay number. What have you made Kylie wear? Well, first and foremost I want to let everyone know that she is not wearing a 'bindi' or a 'ghaghra' as some are speculating out there. She is wearing a short Western dress; the kind that she could have worn even at an international platform like say, MTV awards. As I mentioned earlier as well, she maintains an international appeal in her costume, dance and body language. And how much does the audience get to see of Kylie? Her butt has earned her millions of fans worldwide! Please, no butt show here in our song. We have restricted the show to her legs! Well, we will live with that. How about her tantrum throwing on the sets? Appears there was a 'No Entry' sign board, literally, on the floor where the song was being shot! What rubbish! People will write what they want; you can't go and stop them from doing that. Leave aside the celebrities, every dog and cat was allowed to enter; there was no restriction of any sorts. The production people may have got a little hassled about the presence of an international celebrity amongst them and hence become a little strict in their screening of visitors. But no, she didn't declare war on visitors, as is being said by some people. But on the sets, she did throw tantrums, right? Why do you have to believe in hearsay? Come on, on the contrary I was telling her that she should behave like an international celebrity, throw a tantrum, or two, make her presence important, have people around her in a little awe. She is such a sweet woman to work with. She used to be on sets from 8 AM to 8 PM without any complaints whatsoever; have her pictures clicked with the dance troupe and others. It was a dream come true to have worked with her. Didn't you two know each other? We hadn't interacted ever. I of course knew about her body of work while she too had seen Om Shanti Om. She was also aware about my musical Bombay Dreams so that kind of helped the ice to be broken. And what about Akshay? What about Akshay? Well, he is always a pleasure to work with. I have directed him earlier, albeit for a short duration, in Om Shanti Om and it was one amazing shoot that I can never forget. Moreover, it was close to two years after choreographing him in 'Mast Kalandar' [Heyy Babyy] that I was having him on the dance floors for Blue. With him and Kylie around, we had great fun throughout the week that the song was choreographed.

"Ek will be a defining film for Bobby's career" - Sangeeth Sivan

Maker of Kya Kool Hain Hum and Apna Sapna Money Money, Sangeeth Sivan, is turning adventurous with the release of his action flick Ek - The Power of One . He has played around with the on-screen personalities of both his lead heroes in the film - Bobby Deol and Nana Patekar. "That's right, we all deliberated on the aspect of presenting both Bobby and Nana differently in the film", says Sangeeth Sivan who has earlier directed action films like Zor and Chura Liya Hai Tumne, "During last so many years, they have worked in dozens of films and it was just right that we give audience something different." So how different do they look in the film? "Well, to begin with Nana has been presented in this entire cool avtar. So he will be seen entirely in Western outfits with T-Shirts, Jeans, shades, bandana, and the works. His getup has been entirely changed for the film. He looks much younger and fitter. Not just that; as a CBI officer, he is shown as someone who associates every situation with a female and that makes him a colorful character on screen!" Of late, Bobby has been facing a rough patch at the Box Office. Nevertheless, Sangeeth is confident that Ek - The Power of One will turn out to be a pleasant surprise for all. "The film should be special for Bobby and his fans because after a long time he would be seen in a full fledged action role. His entire look and persona has been remodeled for EK so that it goes with the character he enacts. Mark my words, Ek will be a defining film for his career." What's so special about it? "The raw power that Bobby has been brought to his character", says the young-at-heart director excitedly, "When you would look at him, you would mainly look at the character that he plays rather than the Bobby you have known for years. His actions speak louder than his words, literally. Though the film has an action base to it, there is strong undercurrent of emotion that goes throughout the narrative. There is a very good appeal in the script for family audiences to walk into the theaters as well." Starring Shreya Saran as the leading lady opposite Bobby with Jackie Shroff and Chunkey Pandey in supporting roles, Ek - The Power of One is all set to arrive on 27th March.

"Success has destroyed more people than failure" - Sajid Nadiadwala

"You need to be criticized to survive," says Sajid Nadiadwala reacting to apprehensions about his leading lady Kareena Kapoor's acting skills. In the second part of this exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Sajid dares to give a frank and honest opinion about the Ashutosh Gowariker-Sajid Khan big fight at the recently held Star Screen Awards. Also, we cull out more details about the ugly incident a few days ago when he and his wife were held hostage at gun point. The lavish producer even talks about his future productions and the possible worldwide premiere of Kambakht Ishq. Talking about Kareena Kapoor, she was fantastic in Jab We Met but she wasn't up to the mark in Tashan and Golmaal Returns as an actress. Will we see her rediscovering herself as an actress in Kambakht Ishq? I feel an actor who works like this has a long life as compared to an actor who is only peaking and peaking. People gave hits, then deliver a flop, are criticized, and then they give a hit again; such people stay for the next ten years. People who only peak are dangerous because they will suddenly reach the top and then they are nowhere. You need to be criticized to survive 15 years. You need failure because I always feel success has destroyed more people than failure. You need failure because I always feel success has destroyed more people than failure. Do we get to see Kareena, the fine actress in Kambakht Ishq? Ya ya of course. She has acted well in every film. It's the director's problem, also script's problem! She tries her level best. If the script is faulty what can an actor do? A person can't take the whole thing on his/her own shoulder. He/she needs a partner. I mean she has done a good job in all her films, she was very good in the films that you are naming, may be the film was not nice. What is so special about the director of Kambakht Ishq, Sabir Khan that you entrusted him with such a big budgeted film? He has worked with me in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. He was the chief assistant director. He designed the film totally with me and he is in total sink with me. He understands my taste and he got an immense power on his technical team. He is very well read and above all he is a wonderful human being. He has done a good job. When you plan a film, we don't plan it big. It just keeps on happening. I have signed three directors, three new directors Shirish Kundar, Sajid Khan and Sabir. The failure of Jaaneman didn't stop me from making a big film again with Sajid and Heyy Babyy was a big hit. The failure of Jaaneman didn't stop me from making a big film again with Sajid and Heyy Babyy was a big hit There's a love triangle between Akshay, Kareena and Denise Richards. We've also seen images of the kiss between Akshay and Denise. But Akshay hasn't been open about kissing on screen earlier... There is a triangle between Denise Richards, Akshay and Kareena. I would not like to open a window to the film by discussing anything but it's an interesting film. Summer time, IPL is over and you have a 29th May release then as a viewer I would love to go after college or school holidays to watch Kambakht Ishq. It's a very positive film. It has got energy, extra ordinary music... it's a beautiful commercial film which people would go to enjoy with their families. Talking about your other films, there's Sajid Khan's Houseful. In fact Sajid has openly stated that it's going to be the biggest hit of 2009. What is the film all about? He wanted to make his first film as a comedy but he kept it on hold because he thought people should take him seriously first. So, he worked on a film which had emotions. To make a film with a baby is not a joke. It's too easy to watch a two and a half hour film about a child but to shoot with the baby isn't a child's play. There are restrictions in Australia where you can shoot only 11 hours in a week with kids. It was very difficult. You have six or eight babies on the set, sometimes when we wanted to shoot with them they used to go to sleep and when we wanted them to sleep they were wide awake. It's not that easy, now Sajid can do anything. He said my next film must be entertaining as that's what the audience wants from me. I want to make such a mad film that people would not be sitting on their chairs. Eventually we decided lets go for an out and out comedy film. Would you like to say something about what happened between him and Ashutosh Gowariker at the Star Screen Awards? I'm not being diplomatic or politically correct but one thing is definitely there that both are very wonderful human beings. I know Ashu very well and we had some amazing dinners between me, Sajid and Ashu. He (Ashutosh) is a wonderful human being and definitely he is hurt. Sajid has done what he has done all his life for the last ten years while Ashu has done what he has done all his life that is he has spoken when he needs to. Both are right. Now, the situation occurred on a public platform and that was wrong. Sajid has been doing the same thing for the last ten years and he has been appreciated so much. He is successful and that's why the channels call him. I don't think anybody takes him seriously, they enjoy what he says because he says it from the heart and he is basically an industry man. Now you are talking about Ashu; if it was some other director I would have said that he is wrong but because I know this guy, he must be hurt definitely. You need courage to come on the stage and talk like this. It's not a publicity stunt. Sajid understood it and immediately called him the next day. He has been more then magnanimous. I am so proud of Sajid. He is such a big star in his own way but he called up the next day that if I have hurt somebody then I am very sorry, my intention was not to hurt anyone. He was there for 40 minutes with the gun on my wife's head A few days ago there was a tragic incident in your personal life when a watch man in your residential building held you and your wife on gun point for quite sometime. What really happened? When we came back that night, he actually pulled the gun on my wife and I didn't know where he got it from. He was there for 40 minutes with the gun on her head. I thank Allah that things went well. We spoke out that whole crises but one thing that I am very proud of is the way the cops reacted the next day. There were about two hundred cops at my home and they nailed him in 48 hours. I am so proud of the cops. Sometime we are so rude to them in the way we write the scripts and we have one pattern of critcising the cops but I remember four teams were working on the job and for forty eight hours these guys didn't sleep. One flew down to Lucknow, somebody flew to Bihar. Mumbai police is unbelievable, the way they reacted to the situation was amazing. It was a very difficult case to crack since we didn't have a finger print, no photograph nothing so hats off to the cop. Also people like us in a third world country we need to be a bit careful because the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer so when this kind of margin increases it's got to be frustrating. I met this watch man in jail. I thought I would be very angry after the whole situation but when I met him, I actually felt sad for him because you know it's all because of money. We need to be little sensitive with the people around. It was a new guy, maybe if he was working for the next six month he wouldn't have done that because all my staff are there with me for the last 25 years, they will never ever think of doing such a thing. I believe you're also planning a premiere of Kambakht Ishq and you're inviting Sylvester and other Hollywood cast members to show it to the world that Mumbai is a safe and wonderful city especially after 26/11. I will not have premieres at all ever in my life because I feel the last two three days are the most sensitive time for the producer. I am not in a mood wearing the suit and standing outside the theatre at all at that given time and welcoming people. I have never done that and I will never do it. But because it involves foreign actors I feel that these people should also come to India and see what India is all about. It's not what it is always portrayed as. Mumbai is a beautiful city. It's a city where so many films are made. It's a city where people know how to fight back. I feel all these people should also be given the chance to see what India and Mumbai are all about. Sylvester is shooting for his next film Expendables which he is directing as well at that time. It should end by 22nd of May. If it ends by 22nd or 24th then he will be here by 27th of May. I will not have premieres at all ever in my life Finally, what are your future projects after Houseful and Kambakht Ishq? I am at present shooting for only these two films. I am making a film with Siddharth Anand. His Yash Raj contract is over. We are starting a film with him in August. The star cast should be finalized in a week's time. It's a different film, it's an interesting film. It has got its own moments; you can't categorize it now otherwise it sends a wrong signal. But by the first week of April we can declare everything. It's an interesting star cast. To read the First part of this interview, click here
