The Soundtrack: “Daylight” By Matt & Kim

Matt & Kim GrandThis week’s show opened with the song “Daylight” from Matt & Kim’s new album Grand. “Daylight” begins with Matt singing about cutting his pants into shorts and throwing his shoes into the ocean (which are both things I believe he does frequently) but also includes a bit of introspection. We’ve been listening to Matt & Kim for the past few years and it’s fantastic to see how they’ve developed, yet maintained their strong sense of unbridled optimism and fun (check out "Yea Yeah" from their first album). Matt & Kim does in fact consist of a dude named Matt and his girlfriend, Kim. On the album, they stick to their basics: Matt on the synth/keys, and Kim provides percussion but some of their songs shockingly cross the 3 minute mark. Besides “Daylight”, other standouts include “I Wanna” (which does clock in at 1:38), “Don’t Slow Down,” and “Lessons Learned” (with Kim sharing vocal duties). They prove there’s definitely room for another guy/girl band to join your Mates of State/Rosebuds/Captain & Tennilles of the world. You don’t have to live in Brooklyn on Grand Street (which the album is named after) to enjoy this album, but I DO live on Grand Street and enjoy the album so eat it. Watch the video for “Daylight” after the jump:
Matt & Kim are currently touring with Cut Copy -- If you like good music and having fun, you might want to check that tour out (dates here).

Costa-Gavras lends touch of magic to immigrant tale (Reuters)

Reuters - An illegal immigrant comes to Europe to find a better life in "Eden Is West," a familiar story distinguished by its healthy $9 million budget and the Italian star power of Riccardo Scamarcio as a noble, handsome young immigrant from an unnamed country. Directing the French-Italian-Greek co-production, veteran Costa-Gavros avoids a strictly realistic treatment in favor of a more symbolic approach, with mixed results.

Feel the Need to Embellish With Milan’s Top Accessories

Marni.

Milan's accessories made the outfits this runway season. Designers breathed new life into bags: Prada's bags took on fur, Dolce & Gabbana's used fringe, and Emporio Armani's featured silver studs. Gloves morphed into statement pieces: Giorgio Armani opted for patent leather, Marni tacked on fur, and Jil Sander's two-tone pair almost hit the shoulder, proving gloves just might be the new sleeves. As for jewelry, it's meant to be big and bold. Bottega's necklace looked like a jeweled wreath hung around the models' necks, and Marni mixed flowers and chains in a gold-accessorizing montage. (Bling isn't out after all!) So if you feel the need to take a break from the retro eighties clothes and neon boldness, make your statement with accessories. Come fall, it's time to pile them on. Click ahead to check out our favorite bags, gloves, and jewelry.

Week in Review: Slow Jammin’ the News

Looking back on a week in which we licked it for $10 ...

• Despite all the things Zack Snyder got right, his Watchmen movie inspired a backlash. At least Dr. Manhattan's wang got good reviews. Mostly.

• We heroically made it all the way to the end of D.T. Max's New Yorker profile on David Foster Wallace, but we're still worried about The Pale King.

• We worried about Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and so did Jimmy Fallon. And so did Twitter.

• McG stayed classy.

• Poster Boy's accomplice got canned.

• Judd Apatow answered the call of the Internet. Or so we thought.

• The CW got off on a technicality.

The Bachelor was awesome.

• Lil Wayne practiced.

• Rock beef got out of control.

• U2 announced a new album, possibly too soon.

• Jimmy Fallon got a little better — by underhanded means?!? Then he turned to alcohol.

• We speculated on the origins of the four-toed statue.

• Ghostface did the right thing.

• Dwight gave us TMI.

Sawyer and Jimmy Barrett joined the Dharma Initiative.

• Michael Jackson came back!

• So did Lonny Ross!

• There were unsnobby art shows! And nobody sold a thing.

• The blind guy made it, even if his voice isn't that much better than this guy's.

New York ‘Least Manly’ City in America?

We love that "just out of bed" look on our ladies.

According to some study dreamed up by Combos, the delicious snack that is actually fashioned in the form of a clogged artery just so that you know what you're getting into, New York is at the very bottom of a list of the top 50 Most Manly Cities in America. We even lost out to L.A., which is the only city that keeps the Dep hair-gel industry afloat! Okay, so we get the joke, it's hilarious for other parts of the country to tease how swishy we are: Pace Picante's entire marketing campaign was based on the premise for a long time. But enough is enough. Let's set this matter straight for once and for all. New Yorkers are manly!

Who better to explain this than a skinny gay man wearing a cardigan whose only dream in the world is for his boyfriend to let him have a puppy? Here we go:

1. We've managed to make the symbol of our city a busty lady wearing only a sheet, waiting to welcome all comers. That's less manly than what Seattle and Washington, D.C., have going?
2. Texas couldn't handle Sean Avery, so they sent him back.
3. Brett Favre gave up a farm in Green Bay for us.
4. Even our nemesis, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, lives here! With Gisele, the hottest woman in the entire world. I'm told.
5. In fact, we have more professional sports teams in the New York metropolitan area than any other metropolitan area in the country. And we even love the ones that suck.
6. You non–New Yorkers might be surprised to learn that we actually drink lots of PBR, and wear plenty of flannel, trucker hats, wifebeaters, cowboy boots, and Carharts, too. Just, um, differently.
7. Men's Health editor Dave Zinczenko lives here. Wait, can I take that one back?
8. Heroic men land planes on our rivers.
9. Rivers that men also fish in. A lot. Really, it's gross.
10. Practically every awesome poppy hip-hop star who doesn't beat up his girlfriend lives here.
11. We also do fried food, BBQ, and bacon products more abundantly and perhaps even better than any other single city. There, we said it. Our old Grub Street editor Josh Ozersky recently ate so much of it, in fact, that he got gout. That's the Disease of Kings.
12. The very map of our city looks like a dong. A big one.
13. Chelsea, our gayborhood, is filled with dudes who could kick any potbellied NASCAR slouch's ass.
14. Though they would never kick the ass of the dashing NASCAR hero Jeff Gordon, who lives here part-time, bitches.
15. One of the "qualifications" on this list is whether or not a city has "drag racing." The pollsters would argue that New York does not. We would argue that the pollsters have never been standing on East 2nd Street between First and Second Avenues when Lucky Cheng's closes and the Cock just starts getting going.
16. We have really, really hot firemen. Who slide down poles. And save lives in slippery, sweaty rubber outfits. And run into burning buildings. Which are hot.

I guess what I kind of mean is, being gay can be manly too. And if that's the case, then we've got all our bases covered. Nashville, you may wear more flannel, but ours fits.

Condé Nast Publishers Asked to Spend Less on ‘Events, Travel and Other Areas’

Publishers at Condé Nast have asked to contemplate how they might trim 10 percent from their budgets. Meanwhile, Hearst does a Don Corleone impression, and a 55-year-old's "fun" internship doesn't sound fun at all.

• Publishers at Condé Nast have been asked to contemplate how they might trim 10 percent from their budgets, "although no specific targets have been set ... most publishers are expected to spend less on events, travel and other areas." Meanwhile, Hearst, Rodale, and Hachette Filipacchi continue to “streamline” their operations. [WWD]

• Hearst’s Seattle Post-Intelligencer makes employees an offer they can’t refuse — but the offer to move to web for less money and fewer benefits is so bad that some staffers, well, refused. [Romenesko]

Bernard Arnault Makes John Galliano Nervous

Bernard and Hélène.

The new issue of The Wall Street Journal's WSJ. magazine has a cover story on the richest man in France, LVMH chief Bernard Arnault. We are severely envious of the reporter who wrote the story, and accompanied Bernard on a meeting with John Galliano in Dior's Paris headquarters where buyers were scoping out the pre-fall collection. His wife, classical concert pianist Hélène Mercier, describes Bernard as "obsessive." At the meeting with John he picks up a red-rimmed cotton-canvas bag and states, “I just don’t like it. I don’t like it at all.” He asks his daughter Delphine for her opinion. She says it would look good with jeans. John says ladies in St. Tropez will buy it, but Bernard's not convinced. “I don’t like it,” he says. “I don’t want to see it in stores.” And with that, he just shut down John Galliano.

Galliano, his ponytail creeping out of a black cap, reads nervously in English from a prepared speech to explain the source of his inspiration: Dior seen through the erotic lens of photographer Helmut Newton. “Ça, c’est beau—how much is it?” Arnault asks as a tall blond model stands before him in a $1,500 red double-face wool dress. “Will that sell?” he asks of an embroidered $15,000 cream-colored gown. (The answer was yes, in Monaco, Hong Kong and Moscow.) “Why not use those black masks for the ad campaign?” “If you tell me so, sir,” Galliano answers.

Arnault often brings home prototype bags or perfumes to get a more “feminine view” from Hélène. “Sometimes it’s about his opinion and sometimes it’s about the opinion of his wife,” Louis Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs says. Other than that, Bernard pretty much lets designers who work for him — Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc, and John among them — do their thing.

“Designers are closer to artists than to engineers,” Arnault says. “They’re not like normal managers, and you have to balance their creativity and rationality. John, Karl, Marc, they’re genius. You can’t put them into a rational environment. They’re sometimes late, and you have to accept that if you work with them, you have to be understanding with them.”

And that article almost completely made up for the somewhat atrocious animal-balloon-saturated fashion spread from the last issue.

Being Bernard Arnault [WSJ.]

Why Andrew McCarthy Is Perfect for the Gossip Girl Spinoff

When we read in the Hollywood Reporter this morning that Andrew McCarthy would play the father of Brittany Snow on the CW spinoff of Gossip Girl, we nearly died with glee. Even though he's playing a father and not a playboy, this role will still be perfect for him, because he'll still be able to play a hyperrich semi-soulless nitwit. Why is he so suited for the role? Because he's had years and years of practice. In fact, one might say, he's been preparing for this role his entire life. Let's take a walk down memory lane, to see some of Blane's — er, Andrew's — best roles.

Designers Don’t Think Your Wrists Are Furry Enough

Giles Deacon.

Fur has made a big splash on the fall runways, from trim to coats. But the big accessory this season is gauntlets, the extra-long cuffs that keep arms cozy. Spotted from New York (at Donna Karan in shearling) to London (at Giles) to Milan (Fendi), gauntlets are even making appearances at Paris. Paired with everything from dresses to coats to suits, these furballs negate the need for sweaters and cover-ups. And yes, we know it's only a matter of time before hipsters start wearing the bedazzled versions of these. Click ahead to see them on the runways.

Barbie: A Beacon of Hope in a Turbulent World

The Downturaround is annoyed. As if all of the bad economic news out there is not enough, we just read a blog entry from Floyd Norris in which he links to some dude who spends his time updating a chart showing how the current market crash compares to the worst ones in recent history. This guy gets linked to all the time by all of the pessimism-porn blogs, and it annoys us because, honestly? This is the informational equivalent of having one guy dig a hole and the next guy fill it up. We get it: The market has now performed worse than it did in 1929. Does that actually tell us anything about our current situation or where we're heading that we didn't already know? No, it does not. We at the Downturnaround think people who focus on these things could probably make better use of their time.

As for how we use our time? Well, as always, we are dedicated to making you, the reader, a happier person. And so today we dove straight into the middle of a darkening cloud in order to bring you the silver lining.

• Things are not going great in China. But do you know where Mattel is creating the first ever, full-on Barbie store? A six-story building in Shanghai. And you know why that makes us feel okay? Not because we own any Mattel stock, but because it shows that American companies have plenty to gain from Chinese growth. Screw this talk of "decoupling." Chinese economic expansion does not come at our expense, contrary to what many of the fearmongers out there say. It creates additional markets for America's unparalleled array of global brands. [Bloomberg]

• When big companies can't get it right, there is opportunity for smaller, nimbler competitors. Today's example: Indie filmmaking set to profit from major studios' cutbacks. [Bloomberg]

• Wall Street may be bleeding jobs, but new hiring has not ground to a standstill. [DealBook/NYT]

• Netflix stock continues to thrive, which demonstrates, among other things, that most of the world does not sit still and wait for doom to overtake them (only journalists do that). People and businesses adapt to new circumstances, they come up with new ideas, and eventually everything gets better. [Clusterstock]

• Let's talk about the beleaguered American homeowners for a minute. Perhaps you saw the headlines yesterday about how one in five are underwater on their mortgage. This is not good news. But there's another headline you didn't read: One in three American homeowners owe NO money on their mortgages — because they don't have mortgages: They own their homes outright. So more Americans owe NOTHING than are underwater. Makes you feel a little better, doesn't it? Bonus: Mark Cuban, of all people, has a remarkably hopeful story about not freaking out about being underwater. [Cyberhomes.com]

• "He looked nervous, even flustered, at first, and some of the prepared comedy was surprisingly lame." [Ed. Note: That was the first sentence!]

• "Mr. Fallon was cute and funny on Saturday Night Live, but he is not necessarily the ideal choice for the Late Night core audience of young males: his humor is mischievous, not anarchic."

• "Most of his skits and routines, however, seemed written for the Web, not for broadcast."

• "Many of the routines he worked into the show in its first nights might have been better suited to YouTube." [Ed. Note: Yes, we believe you said that already.]

• "Twitter is so overexposed that it has become a joke, but Mr. Fallon apparently isn’t in on it. He interviewed Ms. [Cameron] Diaz by posing questions submitted via Twitter. Those turned out to be as dull and anodyne as any taken from a live audience."

• "Remarkably, given how many months he has had to prepare, many of his supposedly wacky, Web-style pranks were oddly plodding and unimaginative."

IN MEMORIUM: Tatiana Del Toro’s Career 2009-2009

TATIANA DEL TORO AND RYAN SEACREST.jpg
Oh Tatiana Del Toro. It's been a bumpy ride since your inimitable (praise Jesus) American Idol debut a few weeks ago. From laughing like a whore in a nitrous oxide factory, to collapsing into a shame pile of tears on national television, to reinventing yourself as a person with a thick Spanish accent, to shanking Simon Cowell in the face with the heel of your Jessica Simpson pump (time TBD)... you might be insane, but you certainly kept America on the edge of their couch. So here is to the death of your career, Tatiana. (Raises glass) Please don't let the Paula's of the world convince you to keep trying. What to do now, then? Just put the above picture in your wallet and introduce yourself to new people as Mrs. Seacrest. You'll be fine. We'll gratefully miss you. We'll bring you our AI Top 13 Predictions next week.

What’s Selling (or Not) at the Armory Show

New York’s Jerry Saltz visited the 2009 Armory Show (open through Sunday), what he calls a “big market, a convention, a gigantic sleepover — it’s also a way for art dealers, hopefully, to sell art.” Watch the video to see a Damien Hirst “dot painting” for $500,000 and what Saltz considers “the ugliest piece of art that could possibly be made in 2009.”

I definitely had tons of music in my childhood; I was a Suzuki piano student for like fifteen years and I was in the San Francisco Boys Chorus, as a boy soprano.

Was the boys chorus fun or traumatic?
Definitely both. I've never thrived in an all-male environment. The boys chorus was run by a strict taskmaster who treated it kind of like a military establishment. I wasn't actually teased mercilessly or anything; I always imagine I had something in common with the 12-year-old girl gymnast who's ranked nationally. Then my voice changed and that kind of wrecked my career.

Did your parents really joke about castrating you to prolong said career?
Yeah, they did. It was kind of a constant joke.

Was morbid humor like that a constant in your house?
Oh, absolutely. My father's side of the family in particular is all mostly German Jews who fled during the Holocaust and left behind people who were decimated; so there was a real sense that life was a strange journey, and that was a subject of much hilarity.

How did the title The Composer is Dead come about?
Well, I first thought the idea would be to do a murder mystery, so each section of the orchestra could be questioned. As I thought about it more, it seemed perfect, because composers can't wait to be dead because only then will anyone listen to them, probably. It seemed good to take all the treachery and backstabbing that happens within an orchestra, between an orchestra and conductor and an orchestra and composer, that you could take the title literally.

Did you ever feel that there was something inherently sinister about orchestras?
Oh most certainly. It seems like a cabal. People get dressed up, carrying strange cases, and they meet in a room and come out onstage and they're all playing different things that somehow cohere. There's the ghost of a conspiracy theory over an orchestra, I think.

You're an accordionist and are known for playing with the Magnetic Fields. What made you take it up?
I had taken piano forever, and then when I got to college I wanted to be in a band. It was during this brief moment in American popular music when no keyboard instruments were cool, and I spotted an accordion at Columbo Brothers in Marin County, and I just bought one. I often say I'm probably the first person in history who took up the accordion to meet women.

And to drive your parents crazy, I've heard?
That was a side benefit, definitely. They acted as if I'd taken up hard drugs. I remember when I was in a band back in San Francisco, and I told my parents to come see me, and they really expressed a fear that when I started to play the accordion my life would be in danger. I'm not sure what their fear was. My mother thought the accordion was a gentile instrument, which is ridiculous — it's steeped in Jewish culture.

Are you still playing with the Magnetic Fields? You and Stephin Merritt seem to a share a proclivity for a downtrodden tone.
I am, yeah. I was just in the recording studio a few days ago, laying down tracks, as they say in the business, for their new album. Mr. Merritt and I have always gotten along really well, and it doesn't hurt that we both prefer melancholy over cheer.

There's murder, heavy drinking, and a "confirmed bachelor" in this book, which is ostensibly for children. Is there ever any worry about how appropriate for children your books are — or do your editors just throw that out the window?
No, I'm asked this a lot about every book, and there's never anything. It's funny you would use those three examples, because I can think right away of instances in Unfortunate Events when there's confirmed bachelors, heavy drinking, and most certainly violence. I've been lucky that the Snicket books have done well enough that I think now maybe they wouldn't dare question it. When I was a child I loved to read about those things. I've never quite understood what the issue is. There's always this kind of, "Well what if my child reads that ... ?" and I always wonder, What is the rest of that sentence? That they then become a serial rapist? Like, concern that your child is drinking, I understand. Concern that your child is reading about drinking just doesn't seem the same to me.

The Obama Administration Has Inspired a Fur Craze in D.C.

Jay Z.

In Washington, D.C., sartorial trends shift with each administration. Ironically, Barack Obama's has inspired residents to break out the fur coats. Proving this, one coat-check attendant in D.C. told The Wall Street Journal the number of furs he handles these days is "ridiculous." There are many reasons for the shift. A number of residents of bitterly cold Chicago, the second biggest market for fur in this country behind New York, moved to D.C. for jobs with Obama, and they brought their furs with them. Also, African-Americans are disproportionately big buyers of fur, and the Obama administration has attracted an influx of professional African-American talent to the area. Though sales have declined nationwide, in 2006 African-Americans represented 27 percent of fur sales compared with 16.5 percent in 2002, reports the Fur Council. (Meanwhile, the animal-rights movement has succeeded in scaring white people out of wearing fur.)

But also, people are wearing fur for practicality's sake. D.C. is cold, and fur is warm. Fur sales spiked in D.C. leading up to the inauguration because people wanted to be warm at their parties and standing outside on Inauguration Day for hours on end — Jay Z, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Queen Latifah among them.

PETA is obviously having a (soy) cow over this. "The administration is all about understanding and caring, and there's no place for fur in that," PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said. The group was in D.C. causing a ruckus during the inauguration.

To protest, PETA activists dressed like raccoons, foxes and rabbits and handed out hot chocolate in cups that said, "Thank you for keeping warm without fur."

So they're standing there in their costumes going, "You're not wearing fur! You can have our chocolate!"? We would just like to know if it was soy chocolate. Or breast-milk chocolate. Just curious, PETA. Whenever you have a chance.

New Theory for Lost’s Four-Toed Statue Emerges

Another new theory has emerged on sl-Lost.com about a possible identity for the statue that the Lost gang saw in this week's episode: "Tawaret was the [Egyptian] goddess of protecting women during pregnancy and childbirth ... Right there we have a significant tie to the Island — somewhere during its history, women who were impregnated there and chose to have their babies, died during childbirth. We know that the statue as it existed when Sawyer and Co. saw it no longer exists in modern times, and we also know that the birth problem has been a modern problem for the Others. Now, whether it has anything to do with the destruction of this statue is unknown and unlikely, but it does seem as though this ancient statue might be closely linked with current Island happenings." Why Is Nobody Buying the New U2 Album?

HITS Daily Double reports that U2's boring new album, No Line on the Horizon, is on track to sell around 450,000 album this week — not bad considering that no one was buying CDs even before the economic apocalypse. But this is the Last of the Megabands™! U2's last album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, sold 840,000 in its first week of release — so what went wrong this time? It's certainly not for a lack of annoying promotion!

Of course piracy is a factor, but it was also a factor in 2005 when Bomb leaked way in advance of its official release. Digital Music News speculates that Horizon's slumping sales are the fault of "Get on Your Boots," the album's earsore of a first single, which is failing to generate interest on radio, iTunes, and even file-sharing networks, hilariously. And it's true that it's an awful, awful song — but is it really bad enough to put off even the fans who've stuck with U2 all these years?

It seems to us there could be a million reasons Horizon might not be catching fire: Is the dull cover not standing out enough on CD racks? Did everybody see its perfect review in Rolling Stone and assume that only their dads would like it? Were fans annoyed with the decision to release five different versions? And could the different editions be cannibalizing sales? Is the band's five-night stand on Letterman backfiring by allowing potential buyers to actually hear how dull the record's deep cuts are? Has America finally fallen out of love with the Edge's delay pedal? Or is it the way Bono seems increasingly detached from band affairs and weirdly prickly in all recent interviews?

In any case, if actual sales are as bad or worse than projections, then the joke's on us, since the Biggest Band in the World will either be Coldplay or the Jonas Brothers, and that just reflects poorly on everybody.

March On: The Best of Milan’s Shoes

Marni.

After New York's plethora of black boots, we were excited to see some more variety marching down the Italian runways in Milan. As a nice foil to last season's dangerous heels, Miuccia Prada sent out models in her version of the Wellie, complete with thick soles and heavy linings, along with some pretty serious thigh-high leather boots. Marni's sandals made our shopping list: metallic and black with a hefty platform and a delicate ankle strap that looks perfect with tights. And, ever classic, Raf Simons paired beautifully chic gray suede pumps with an electric-orange dress at Jil Sander. We can't wait to see what comes next as Paris launches into high gear.

Welcome Back to 1982

Like Benjamin Button, it seems we keep moving ever further back in time. Days ago, our economy looked like it did back in 1996. But this morning's Labor Department report put employment levels back at 1983 levels. And now the Times Economix blog says we're hurtling quickly toward 1982. This is terrible, depressing news. But let's remember: 1982 wasn't all bad. True, there was the Cold War and the Mexican debt crisis and a brief but crippling recession. But there was also E.T. and Pac-Man and Thriller, and after all we were still a modern, not agrarian or foraging society. That's next week. In the meantime, soothe yourself with this video, which, we should note, is almost NSFW. Which was another good thing about 1982.

Staten Island Advance Takes a Bite Out of Crime

The Staten Island Advance is one of the only papers in the city that will fully report on local petty crimes. And earlier this week, after thief Gilbert Caraballo held up a convenience store in the Meiers Corners neighborhood of Staten Island, they did exactly that. Posting a security-camera image of the perp on their website at 6:11 p.m. on Wednesday, the paper's staff also included details of the crime and a description of the criminal. Then this happened:

His sister was surfing the internet when she saw the photo of Gilbert Caraballo, sticking up a cashier by pretending to have a knife; she then called her brother "to ask if he had robbed anyone." After he checked out his clippings at the Advance and NY1, Caraballo went to the cops. "I feel like [garbage] about the robbery," he says, "so I had to turn myself in."

We love that: Remember tonight, people, to make sure you go home and call your loved ones, and ask them if they've robbed anyone. According to the Village Voice, one Advance reader speculated that what Caraballo really felt like garbage about was all the people in the paper's comments section calling him "Super Mario."

New Star Trek Trailer Gives Captain Kirk His Own Inigo Montoya Moment

Tagline: "Your father was the captain of the Starship for twelve minutes. He saved 800 lives. Including yours. I dare you to do better."

Translation: James Tiberius Kirk has some unresolved daddy issues.

The Verdict: As you physically and emotionally prepare yourself this weekend for the nearly three-hour slog that is the Watchmen experience, be sure to take your preshow bathroom break before the trailers begin. Why? Because no matter how rad you think that the new Star Trek trailer that you're about to watch looks on your computer monitor, we guarantee it will look approximately 1,000 times more impressive when viewed on the big screen. As the tagline attests, this trailer gives some additional clues and insight into the rebellious Captain Kirk's backstory, and goes a long way towards setting the table for Captain Kirk to have his very own Inigo Montoya moment with an evil Romulan played by Eric Bana. We are SO there.

Let’s Hear What the Nina Ricci Models Had to Say!

Olivier Theyskens's show for Nina Ricci yesterday left attendees and models breathless. "He's truly one of my favorites and it's sad that he'll be gone from Ricci," Tanya Dziahileva said. "I'm just standing around here and I'm refusing to take his clothes off. They'll have to force me." Lily Donaldson said they all "had a lot of practice" in the stunning shoes, which were quite possibly the highest we've seen in seasons. "But once you take them off, you automatically feel very short. That's the only downside." She is five ten. [FWD]

The CBS Colonoscopy Sweepstakes: What’s The Catch?

CBS has put together one of the most relevant and stirring sweepstakes of our time, where one lucky winner will receive a free trip to New York replete with a complimentary colonoscopy. Here is Letterman announcer Alan Kalter with the details:
Now, we know what you're thinking: A free colonoscopy, eh? What's the catch... Well, according to the sweepstakes, the worst part might be this: "The hardest part is the preparation the night before when you drink a laxative. This laxative is well known for declaring itself at the very moment you have called a relative or friend (or room service) to comment that it does not seem to be working. But hang in, because it's important to have a clear colon for the screening and the fun part is about to begin." We are suckers for a little light scatalogical humor. Plus, we love laxatives. Let’s Never Hear About Nadya ‘Octomom’ Suleman Ever Again

It was all the way back on January 26 that Nadya Suleman, now widely known as Octomom, gave birth to eight children. That was kind of interesting, and the fact that she already had six other kids piqued the country's interest, and even got some people mad (although nobody seems as pissed about the 18 Kids and Counting mom from TLC). The obligatory soft-focus interviews followed, after which we expected Suleman to fade back into obscurity.

But against all odds, the Suleman saga stubbornly continues to receive attention. Even in just the past couple of days, we've learned that Suleman is shopping a tape of her giving birth to octuplets (who would watch that?), and heard a leaked 911 call she made in October (who cares?). You can't blame Suleman for wanting to milk this for all it's worth, but the news media is under no obligation to cover it. And while we'd go crazy if the news was entirely focused on job losses, Ponzi schemes, stock dives, and deficits, can't we at least find a new mindless human-interest story to distract us? Personally we'd like to see some more time devoted to this woman.

SPOILER ALERT: 10 Trailers That Give Away The Entire Movie

WM SmileyWatchmen has finally hit theaters, thus ending a historic saga of internet video leakage that resulted in about 109% of the film ending up online prior to its release. Still, it's not like the idea of previews giving away way too much information about a movie is anything new -- to honor the Watchmen release, in all its spoilery glory, we've compiled this list of 10 Other Movie Trailers That Give Away The Entire Movie (Spoiler Spoiler-Alert!):
10. Frost/Nixon Surely the "When the president does it, it's not illegal!" line from every trailer isn't going to be the most climactic moment of the interview, right? The next line that they're not showing is Nixon calling Frost a dickhole, right? Please??

9. Forrest Gump You'll have to see the movie if you want to know exactly how many Dr. Peppers Forrest drinks and whether or not the prostitute's mouth tastes like cigarettes. Everything else is pretty much covered.

8. Mission: Impossible The stunt where Tom Cruise kills the villains by blowing up the helicopter and propelling him safely onto the back of the train is pretty sweet, but there's an even more amazing one right after that where the names of the people who made and appeared in the film scroll up the screen over black.

7. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers I wonder if Gandalf will come back in th-- oh. Hey Gandalf, what's up?

6. Carrie She goes berserk at prom and kills everyone with her telekinesis, eh? But what song was playing at the dance before this happens?

5. Speed Does the bus crash into an airplane and explode BEFORE the part where they jump over the missing section of the highway and land safely or AFTER? We're not telling!

4. V For Vendetta Hang on -- the part where everyone descends on Westminster Abbey wearing V masks and the abbey blows up might be a dream sequence.

3. Chinatown Trailers in the 70s were usually more literal and a lot less stylized than they are now; they'd frequently explain plot points, reveal every twist, include the iconic final line and shot of the film in its entirety...

2. Cast Away But what happens in between the part where Tom Hanks gets off the island on his makeshift raft and the part where he's on a plane learning that he was stranded on the island for four years? So many questions unanswered.

1. The Godfather Guess they figured you're gonna end up memorizing this whole movie anyway, so might as well just get a head start with the trailer. (Sidenote - biggest shitty trailer / great movie discrepancy in history? Yes, besides possibly The Third Man)

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Spider-Man 2, The Negotiator, What Lies Beneath, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man, this Psycho video. Others we're leaving out? Leave 'em in the comments.

Reasons 1 Out of 1 To Move To England

Well, it's official: We're moving to England. Why, you ask? Is it because of the accents? The people? The delicious food? The overall blankie of elegance? No. The reason is simple....
CLOWN SHORTAGE.jpg
ENGLAND IS EXPERIENCING A CLOWN SHORTAGE. A new crackdown by the U.K. immigration authorities is preventing dozens upon dozens of clowns and other circus performers from entering the country. Says a circus owner, who we have nicknamed "Devil Jones":
"My season started in February," says Martin Lacey, owner of the Great British Circus, "and I've got comedy acrobats stranded in the Ukraine, and Mongolian horse riders who were refused their visas in Ulan Batur." The holes in his lineup have forced Lacey to draft last-minute substitutes. "Our Mexican clown is stuck in Mexico, so we've got a trapeze artist pretending to be a stooge just to get everybody out of trouble," he says. "It's a mess."
First thing to note before moving across the pond: In England, "loo" means "bathroom", and "mess" means "a miracle".

Rihanna's Family Pray For Prison

Rihanna's family hope Chris Brown is jailed.

Chris, 19, has been charged with two felonies - assault and making criminal threats - for his alleged attack on the 'Umbrella' singer and her loved ones hope he receives the maximum sentence of four years and eight months in prison if found guilty.

One relative said: "It's about time. He should be in jail. He deserves whatever he gets."

Chris reportedly punched, bit and choked Rihanna until she was unconscious after they began arguing in his rented silver Lamborghini on February 8.

Rihanna's father Ronald Fenty has spoken out about the incident, claiming no punishment could excuse Chris' behaviour.

Speaking about how he felt when Chris was charged, Ronald said: "I don't know how to react. Chris is a very talented guy. I still think he's a little immature for Rihanna. Justice can never be served in this situation. He can't feel the pain she felt.

I would tell Chris, 'Don't ever try again, don't even think about it.' I'm hurt and disturbed at that scenario.
"I don't believe in hitting a woman. I hope everything works out better for them. I don't feel happy or sad. He's in the court's hands. Let justice prevail."

Ronald has not been in regular contact with his daughter since the incident, but says he is still supporting her.

He told Us Weekly magazine: "I can't get on to her. Her mother can't get on to her, her brother told me she changed her email. Somebody has a stranglehold on her. I'm lost.

"Anyone in my family, I'm there for them. All of my kids, I'm there for them. Rihanna's no exception. All of them I would support."

Asked what message he had for Chris, he replied: "I would tell Chris, 'Don't ever try again, don't even think about it.' I'm hurt and disturbed at that scenario."

Although Chris and Rihanna initially split following the reported incident, they are now believed to have married at P. Diddy's Miami home last weekend.

Rihanna's representatives have refused to confirm or deny the allegation, saying: "We aren't able to offer anything right now but will keep you posted if that changes."

Worst Dressed Celebrity Madonna

Madonna has been named the Worst Dressed Celebrity of 2009.

The '4 Minutes' singer topped the poll by animal rights group PETA because she continues to wear fur.

In a statement, PETA said: "When you see Madonna in fur, you realise why nobody has copied her style since 1984.

"We know she's on the prowl for a young cur, but someone needs to tell Madonna that wearing fur doesn't make you a cougar."

Other celebrities on the list include Kanye West, Kate Moss, Mary J Blige, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Elizabeth Hurley and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Despite her unwanted title, Madonna is launching a new fashion line.

The 'Material Girl' singer has teamed up with designer Ed Hardy to create the "innovative" range, which includes tattoo-inspired T-shirts and diamante-encrusted bodices.

Brand owner Christian Audigier approached the 50-year-old singer after he spotted her wearing Ed's tattoo-print clothes.

When you see Madonna in fur, you realise why nobody has copied her style since 1984
He reportedly offered Madonna a six-figure sum to design her own line and even organised a private catwalk show to inspire her.

The musician was seen arriving at Audigier's office last month and will reportedly put the finishing touches to her range this month.

Madonna designed a "cheap and trendy" range for Swedish clothing company H+M in March 2007.
