If you've watched the news on TV at all yesterday or today, you've probably had some time to think about the insane tale of Travis the chimp, the 200-pound, 13-year-old pet of a Stamford, Connecticut, couple that went berserk yesterday and gruesomely mauled a family friend. This morning the tale made the covers of both New York tabloids, though only the Post came up with the most obvious headline. (Come on, Daily News, "Attack of the TV Ape?" Please.) If you have spent some time thinking about this horrible story (Travis, after being stabbed by his owner in an attempt to get him off his victim, was eventually shot several times by police), you probably have some questions.
We do to, mostly relating to the fact that Travis was raised like a human member of the family after the death of its owner's daughter more than a decade ago. Here 's what we are wondering:
• Why was this animal taught how to use keys to get in and out of the house and family cars?
• Why was this animal taught to log onto the internet? And use the TV remote?
• Why was this animal, which spent most of its time lolling around in a pair of reinforced underpants, taught to drink wine? Out of stemware?
• Who gives an animal tea to calm it down?
• And who gives an animal tea with Xanax?
Seriously, this guy was living the life a human divorcée would find normal. We get that chimps share 90 percent of their DNA with people, and are very smart and capable. But when you're giving your pet skills and substances you wouldn't give a human child, doesn't that seem like a recipe for disaster? We blame this entirely on the short-lived 1991 sitcom Harry and the Hendersons.

Jimmy Can Check That One Off Now:Late Night with Jimmy Fallon has scooped up That Guy A.D. Miles as its head writer. You might recognize Miles from Wainy Days or as the dude who plays guitar during the camp scenes in Role Models, but he was apparently the writer for a bunch of stuff (Dog Bites Man, Porn and Chicken, Speed Freaks). More importantly, though: should we be concerned that, with less than a month to go, Fallon just hired a head writer? [Variety]
Death to Austen:Elton John’s Rocket Pictures is producing Pride and Predator, a, yes, Jane Austen–dreadlocked–homicidal alien crossover project. Producer David Furnish explains the (post-bong?) concept: “It felt like a fresh and funny way to blow apart the done-to-death Jane Austen genre by literally dropping this alien into the middle of a costume drama, where he stalks and slashes to horrific effect.” But most notable is that, as far as we can tell, this has nothing to do with the previously announced Austen-Zombie crossover. Which means a challenge is upon you, world: one more Austen monster movie and we have a legitimate trend. [Variety]
Monahan Takeover:HighlyactiveDeparted screenwriter William Monahan will adapt The Associate, the just-released John Grisham novel, for Paramount; Shia LaBeouf is already set to star as the law-school student blackmailed into working on a multibillion-dollar lawsuit. The project has generated some controversy, as officials from Duquesne University have protested the book’s use of the school as the site of a rape scene. Monahan is reportedly hard at work on an alternative setting, but all he can come up with so far is Shmooquesne University. [Variety]
Berfield's Back:Halle Barry will star as an international jewel thief in Who Is Doris Payne?, from producers Jason Felts and Justin “Reese from Malcolm in the Middle” Berfield. Somehow, this is only the second most ridiculous casting related to a project from the duo, collectively known as J2: Jessica Alba just starred in their film An Invisible Sign of My Own as, of course, a reclusive math whiz. [Variety]
These Two Lanes Will Takes Us to CBS:McG is set to preemptively squander any potential Terminator: Salvation–related film cred on CBS's reality competition Thunder Road, where contestants will race cars through a (deadly sounding) obstacle course. No news on CBS’ long-languishing reality competition Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, a veritable survival-of-the-hobos. [HR]
Scammed:Marc-Andre Grondin, Ellen Barkin and Famke Janssen will star in The Chameleon, French director Jean-Paul Salome's English-language debut. The film is about a missing teen who returns to his family under suspicious circumstances, and is based on this unbelievable New Yorker story from last summer which, seriously, just read it now. [HR]

Award shows often mean free loot for celebrities. But with the economy tanking, this Academy Awards season could see some subtle changes in the giveaway culture, industry insiders say.
Aisha Tyler, on the other hand, was the model of decorum. The tall, dishy actress arrived early, and graciously gave extensive interviews to absolutely anyone who asked, generally gushing about how "ambitious and creative" she finds the William Rast line. Tragically, we didn't hear Gerard Butler say anything in that dishy brogue of his, but we heard one of his Irish-accented handlers quietly requesting a seat for him, and that was balm enough to our spirits. Butler is exactly as deliciously craggy as we had imagined. The woman who got placed next to him had the luckiest night of her life, as Gerard was in an extremely chatty, giggly mood. That lady positively glowed. We are crushed our seat assignment wasn't in his lap.
Justin Timberlake's former bandmate and BFF, J.C. Chasez, sat directly opposite us. We almost didn't notice him because he was so placid and relatively unnoticed by photographers, but he looked schoolboy dapper in a bright-blue sweater over a polka-dotted tie. But he's still got a little of the costumey *NSYNC taste left in him, to judge by the way a heavily studded, light-wash denim shirt had him nodding approvingly (and possibly a bit covetously as well). We admit our inner girlish teenybopper — who is actually not that "inner" sometimes — gave a squeal of delight as he sat down and gently rocked out to the blues music being piped into the tent.
Obviously, other Friends of JT were in the house, but because the celebrities were so thoroughly spread out along the length of the tent and on both sides of the runway, the swarm of photographers and reporters — ourselves included — had a hard time keeping track of every arrival. We happened to be standing about a foot from JT's girlfriend, Jessica Biel, when the mob realized she had arrived, at which point we became the very thin leaf of lettuce in a media triple-decker club sandwich, with cameras knocking and squeezing us from every side. We actually had to hold our arms over our heads to avoid being concussed.
Biel, sporting her typically messy-casual updo, looked cool as a cucumber throughout as she sipped on her booze from backstage and quietly chatted up actor Emile Hirsch — who appeared considerably more dazed by the flashbulbs and only stood up briefly for photos with a frightened gleam in his eye. Also spotted: Law & Order's Anthony Anderson, Mad Men's Alison Brie (presumably relieved to escape her character's nightmare life of marriage to that weasel Pete Campbell), Ugly Betty's precocious teen Mark Indelicato (perched next to Elle's Robbie Myers and Joe Zee), and former MTV V.J. Damian Fahey, whom we spied two Septembers ago at John Varvatos with J.C. Those boys must have bonded during the halcyon days of *NSYNC. We like to imagine that they're all in a bowling league together.
If that league included Vogue's Carine Roitfeld and A-Dubs, it would be worth any price of admission. The supposedly dueling editrixes were both in attendance Monday, the former wearing an extremely dramatic, if slightly muppety, white coat, and the latter hidden safely behind her hair curtain and those omnipresent black sunglasses. In truth, Wintour is the last person we expected to see at a denim-centric show like William Rast. Either her companion — daughter Bee Shaffer — dragged her along to the show, or she's thinking a Timberlake cover is just the thing to boost sales. She might not be wrong. Especially if she can convince him to go shirtless.
On time is the new fashionably late, apparently. Marc Jacobs started promptly for the third consecutive season, and finished even faster: At 8:01 p.m. to 8:08 p.m., by our watch, the show lasted just eight minutes. Nina Garcia and Joe Zee were among those who arrived too late for seats, but others seem to have gotten used to the new regime.
"I knew it was going to be on time," Carine Roitfeld told us afterwards. "I just didn't know it would be so fast!" she said, looking a little dazed. Bergdorf Goodman's Linda Fargo also learned from the last two shows, describing the new punctuality "like Zen. It's so peaceful. I don't know what to do with myself."
Paper's Mickey Boardman had a theory. "He's basically taking everything he started and flushing it down the toilet," Boardman told us. "He's the one who created the giant stadium-sized rock show with 2000 people and every celebrity and now ... I mean, I was the biggest celebrity at that show." Boardman saw shades of Stephen Sprouse, but was most impressed with the hair and black lipstick. "It's so not pretty," he said. "For me it's not a 'fuck you' to the fashion world. It's a big, 'Fuck you, recession.' It harkens back to when he was a young kid and going to clubs. It was such a celebratory 'fuck you.'"
But not that celebratory: "Ten minutes and it was done," Boardman said. "It was like not wanting him to climax: 'Keep it going. I want more.'" We thought it felt more like when a guy climaxes and then immediately falls asleep, but really, who's keeping track?

There's one little hitch with that idea: None of the creative types everyone is breathlessly waiting to welcome back to town could possibly afford these clothes. And even if they could, it's unlikely that primary-colored felt coats with loaf-of-bread shoulders — however nicely realized — would become their fetish objects.
But if it's the spirit of New York at its most creative that Jacobs hoped to summon, he did so in spades. The designer is forever reaching back, summoning up specific emotional splinters in time, and turning them into clothes. His skill is to keep these journeys from feeling literal or sentimental, and to make them look modern.
Jacobs is at his best when he mixes and layers his references, which he didn't much do tonight. But he did make the eighties fresh, with looks like the pleat-front, high-waisted jeans that he kept miraculously narrow and paired with a simple, round-necked black silk top. It'll do while we wait for the good times again.
The first images of the Marc Jacobs show are trickling in now. It's eighties inspiration all over — we see a neon-yellow belted jacket, metallic-blue minis, and green drop earrings. And the hair and makeup are amazing ... flip dos, purple lipstick, cherry-smoky eyes, and spiky hair. We'll have the full runway show for you later tonight, but in the meantime, click ahead to see a sampling of what Marc has in store for fall.

Early reports from the Marc Jacobs show say eighties in a big way: Stephen Sprouse, huge shoulder pads, a downtown, East Village, club-kid vibe. Every model apparently had different hair, and, judging from this amazing shot of Sessilee Lopez, we can't wait to see all the looks.
