Video: Backstage with Alexander Wang's Modern Carnivores

Alexander Wang makes clothes for "modern day carnivores," according to the designer himself. "My girls like to go out, they want to have fun, they want to explore," Wang told Jada Yuan in this backstage video, and you can count Sarah Jessica Parker, Santogold, and Erin Wasson among those followers. Press play to see models dancing, Parker explain why she only goes to fashion shows once every five years, and Yuan's guess at the inspiration behind Wang's condom line.

Malandrino Pays Homage to America’s Barbies

You can't go wrong with the American flag.

Catherine Malandrino's American-flag dress was a big success just after September 11, when it was worn by Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Sharon Stone, and Madonna on tour, and it's working for her again in another hard time. Malandrino relaunched the pattern a few months ago, to commemorate Obama and her tenth anniversary, and "with the election it has been, like, our best hit!" the designer told us at the W Hotels Lounge. "It has been my lucky dress. Relaunching it proved to me that the dress has a long life and it will be iconic in my history."

So forgive Malandrino for sending a model down the runway in another one of her American-flag dresses at today's Barbie show. For her, Barbie “was my first relationship with an American woman, growing up in the French Alps. You know, I thought Americans were very blonde, curvy, and big hair.” Now, every time she comes to L.A., she’s reminded of Barbie’s 50-year lifespan. “I see a lot of women on the street in L.A. looking like Barbie, at 50. They do their breasts, they do their lips, they do their cheeks. You do not know their age anymore. Sometimes they’re 60!”

Even Jane Krakowski Isn’t Sure Whether 30 Rock’s McFlurry Was Product Placement

Tina Fey may have informed Vulture that, despite appearances, there was no McFlurry product placement on this week's 30 Rock. But maybe it doesn't matter! Because, as Jane Krakowski, who plays Jenna Maroney on the show, told us Friday night at Paul Simon's Beacon Theatre concert, the McFlurry bit worked as product placement anyway. “My friends have called me about the McFlurry all day long,” she said. “They can’t get a McFlurry or Michael McDonald out of their head. They want to listen to Michael McDonald while having a McFlurry, and they’re not sure why.”

Krakowski seemed lost in the confusing existential landscape of products the show has created. First, she told us firmly "We don’t have any money in McFlurry!" But then she quickly second-guessed herself. "I don't know. I'm not in on those meetings. Do you know?" Krakowski was, at least, sure that this wasn't like what the show had gone through with Snapple. "Because when we had the Snapple guy, there was actually a man from Snapple [on our set]," she said.

We'll have more on the philosophical implications of all this next week.

Richard Chai and Jim Moore Onboard for Target Menswear Lines

Are you listening, Target?

Watching Richard Chai’s luxe fall menswear collection on the runway on Saturday got the Cut thinking. Chai did a womenswear line for Target. Alexander McQueen is the latest big name to launch a Target line for women. Where’s the cheap and chic for men?

We put this question to GQ creative director Jim Moore, who immediately liked the idea. “I think we’re not giving men enough credit sometimes, and thinking they’re just looking for a basic sweater or T-shirt,” Moore said. “Especially at a price point of an H&M or a Uniqlo, they’re going to definitely experiment a little bit more and go for something that they might not normally wear.”

Moore quickly picked newer menswear designers like Rogue’s Gallery, Robert Geller, Shipley & Halmos, and Yigal Azrouël as perfect for Target. “These guys I think are kind of at a point where they do have the name, they’ve established themselves, they’ve been around for a couple of years,” Moore said. “Maybe it’s time to tap them for a men’s collection,” he said thoughtfully. “It’s a good idea! Let’s do this.”

We put the question to Chai after his show, and he was equally enthusiastic. "Target is an amazing corporation to work with, I would do it again in a heartbeat,” the designer said. “If they approach me for men’s, absolutely, I would do it in a minute.” The Cut wants a cut, please.

Santogold Doesn’t Want to Talk About Santigold

Smiling faces sometimes tell lies.

Earlier this week, we brought you the puzzling news that Santogold had changed her name to Santigold, for reasons unclear. Some theorized that it was because her real name is Santi. Others said the more likely reason was that Santo Gold, the pro wrestler, had sued her.

So when we saw Santi-or-Santo sitting next to Zoe Kravitz in the front row of Alexander Wang's Fashion Week show, we had to ask. Here was her response: "I don't think I'm answering that one. It's just too much. I just did, okay?" Let the speculation continue.

SJP and A-Dubs Yuk It Up as Alexander Wang Warms Fashion Week Hearts

Shhh — Anna's judging.

The mere sight of the line outside Alexander Wang's show stopped us dead. Despite our punctuality, it snaked three abreast down the street and around the corner. "I feel like I'm waiting for the Backstreet Boys to come out," groused a woman nearby. Now there's an idea for PR companies: Entertain the cold, cranky journalists with some choreography and close-harmony singing.

By the time we got inside, it was mere minutes to showtime, leaving us little time to confirm whether singer Roisin Murphy looked as insane as usual. She did, however, sport some skintight, rubbery pants with teeny holes. Perfect for ventilation, or if she is trying to sprout something through them, but maybe not ideal for cold temperatures.

Murphy sat near a semi-dishevelled Zoe Kravitz, who is in dire need of either a trim or a hot-oil treatment. (Possibly both.) Julia Restoin-Roitfeld clutched a nice, warming cocktail from the bar, and down the way sat Lauren Santo Domingo and model-former-Wang-muse Erin Wasson. Even in the dark, her outfit was impossible to miss: a ratty fur jacket and tie-dyed, ruffled bell-bottoms that swayed like hula dancers around her ankles as she danced backstage after the show.

It was no surprise to see Anna Wintour in the front row, right near Diane Von Furstenberg, as both ladies have championed Wang. We were, however, considerably more shocked to see A-Dubs's bouncing bob enjoying an animated conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker. Ms. SJP has in the past expressed great weariness with the Fashion Week hullabaloo, so we got a kick out of seeing her front and center in a long Wangian vest and what appeared to be leggings, chatting with La Bobita as if the two were long-lost camp buddies reliving the glory days of short-sheeting the bunks and sneaking out to skinny-dip. Or maybe they were just giggling over the candied hearts and condoms Wang stuck in the gift bags. Happy VD, indeed.

James Coviello Proves Fashion Shows and West Village Townhouses Don’t Mix

The clothes we didn't get to see.

Getting into the James Coviello show, which was held in a West Village townhouse, was like going on the flume ride at Disney World on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived and joined one of two lines growing down 9th Street. We checked in and were told to stand on the other line. After our hands turned numb, we made it inside the townhouse. And, just like Disney World, we encountered yet another thick line of sardines showgoers once inside.

We eventually made it to the clothes, which were difficult to see behind the crush, but seemed colorful and flirty. Through the hallway, at the end of yet another line, a tiny room offered more models in fall clothes. Cute waiters handed us Champagne as we passed through, the glasses depressingly filled by only a third. The models were hidden behind the pack — again — so we gulped down our Champagne and got back in line to exit.

One of the benefits to staging presentations is that buyers and editors can pop in and out quickly. Coviello's, sadly, made that impossible. West Village townhouses are great for, oh, sitting around and counting money, but not for fashion shows.

Barbie’s Math Skills Tested in Bryant Park

Remember in the early nineties when Mattel released a talking Barbie who whined that math class was tough? And there was a huge outrage and the phrase was pulled from the doll’s repertoire? Judging from the complete and total mayhem that ensued at the Barbie show this afternoon, it seems that, in fact, Barbie CAN’T count and that math IS hard for her.

You’d think that it would be pretty easy to figure out how many seats are in the tent and then let in the corresponding amount of people. Instead, it appeared that almost everyone attending the show was allowed to bring their child, another guest, or some random they picked up off the street (the e-mail sent out to invited guests, in fact, suggested they bring “a neice [sic]”), which meant that the lobby at Bryant Park was packed to the gills with irritated people trying to get into the show and having absolutely no luck at all. It was like Heatherette, but with more screaming children.

This did not put people in a forgiving mood toward Barbie. More than once, we heard a frustrated journalist huff, “It’s JUST BARBIE,” or express the opinion that they didn’t even know the point of the show. The children, on the other hand, generally looked terrified that they were going to be crushed. Even the usually unflappable Robbie Myers, with her daughter in tow, looked mildly concerned that the mêlée would turn ugly. Robbie, however, was safely ushered inside. As for the rest of us, at least a hundred were told that, if we had a seat, it had been “given away.” You’d think Barbie would be polite enough not to just start giving away other people’s things, but it seems that manners — like math — are not her strong suit.

Be a Front-Row Valentine

Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl at United Bamboo.

Leading up to Fashion Week, our reporters asked the front-row denizens about their plans for Valentine’s Day and their thoughts on public displays of affection. After the jump, some loving words from Sean Lennon and Simon Doonan, as well as the worst Valentine’s Day story we’ve ever heard.

Is there a place that PDA is not appropriate?
Singapore. I don’t think you’re supposed to do that there. Yeah, Singapore is definitely out.

What about the front row of a fashion show?
I didn’t even realize there was such etiquette. I didn’t realize it was such an uptight situation. I mean the models are all naked, so why does it matter what we’re doing? I don’t really understand!
—Sean Lennon

How do you feel about public displays of affection in the front row?
I don’t care if people have sexual intercourse in the front row! I wish people were more uninhibited at fashion shows. I would love to see people eating Subway sandwiches and drinking Big Gulps.
—Simon Doonan

Do you have any plans for Valentine’s Day?
It’s the day before my show, so my poor boyfriend will be watching me sewing buttons.
—Jonathan Saunders

Any Valentine’s Day horror stories?
I went to Jamaica once with my boyfriend for a romantic Valentine’s Day trip, and we went swimming. I didn’t see the signs that said “Danger: coral, strong riptide” so I just ran into the water and got picked up by a wave and thrown face-first into a coral reef five or six times. My boyfriend couldn’t swim, so I crawled out of the water with my face, hands, and knees all cut and bleeding. Everywhere we went for the rest of the week, people thought that my boyfriend had beaten me up. It was terrible.

As for the merch, we found a large stock of the pink-patterned dresses, glazed trenches, and cropped leather vests. The gray one-shoulder dresses, which look great on, were scarce, but we suspected many were with dressing-room keepers.

So if you can't wait for your Target McQueen, go to the pop-up this weekend, bring a camera, and make friends. You can even return and exchange!
