Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 24 Jan 2009 | 4:51 pm Subhash K Jha speaks about Raaz - The Mystery ContinuesA certain kind of art wouldn't be possible without the muse. The great music composer Madan Mohan wouldn't have been able to compose all those sparkling melodies were it not for Lata Mangeshkar. A new kind of cinematic heroine was born with Kangna Ranaut in the underrated Gangster. Since then she has played the dark traumatized woman baring her soul to camera so many times you fear her forte would burst open at the seams. Kangna has no fear of fearlessness. Make no mistake Raaz TMC belongs to her. As a woman possessed she carries on this past year's terror tradition propagated by Vikram Bhatt's 1920 and Ram Gopal Varma's Phoonk. Admittedly horror-fest in Raaz TMC is created with more finesse than the other fear flicks that have invaded the large-screen experience in recent years. But you wonder if this kind blind faith is not blinding filmmakers to the larger picture regarding the raison d'etre of cinema. To enlighten and educate while entertaining. Sorry to say Raaz TMC is neither entertaining nor enlightening. And educational? Well to say that spirit exists and not just in champagne glasses, in this day and age, is going a bit too far. Raaz TMC parades a posse of perverse horrors. Often it goes brazenly overboard with faces made-up like over-boiled potatoes and ghouls attacking the horrified heroine in a thick jungle where she, and the director, have no business being. If in Gangster, WohLamhe and Fashion Kangna was possessed by demons from within, here the demons appear to have invaded her body from the outside, jumping at her from bathtubs and mirror images (both scarily directed pieces of chamber horror). On the whole the narrative relies too heavily on false scares....hands reaching out and grabbing poor Kangna that turn out to be known comforting ones, door knobs being wrenched from the outside with banshee-like music to create a frenzy of suspense, satanic rites and ghoulish occultist acts being performed in the dead of the night. When it comes to expressing the wages of sin Kangna remains unsurpassable. She pulls out all stops to deliver yet another fearless performance that's a treatise on trauma. Unlike her last performing act in Fashion in Raaz TMC she suffers from an ambiguously-written character although she's almost the 'wail' to 'wail' carpet in the narration occupying more space than her two leading men. Till the last we don't know what her actual involvement with the macabre goings-on is. We suspect, neither does the screenwriter. Emraan Hashmi as the sullen painter, who paints harrowing scenes from Kangna's life before they happen, brings a kind of austere urgency to his part. Looking anguished comes naturally to him. Adhyayan Suman as the reality-television anchor who carries his penchant for staged realism too far communicates a certain earnestness in his performance. But he has a long way to go. Alas Raaz TMC isn't the vehicle to take its actors too far. It's all about making the audience jump out of its seat in terror rather than aesthetic delight. Its cumbersome heebie-jeebies punctuated by special effects that can at best be described as slightly scary ,do nothing for the horror genre or for the actors who struggle in ill-written parts that careen into queasy little corners. Director Mohit Suri has done better for himself in Kalyug and WohLamhe where he addressed himself to the trauma of a woman forced into a life of reluctant disrepute. Perhaps a woman coerced is more Suri's domain than a woman possessed. This sequel to Raaz is finally worth watching for Kangna's portrait of traumatized womanhood. An act she has mastered. But it's time now to move on.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 24 Jan 2009 | 1:47 pm Dev D not a dream debut: Kalki

Apparently a lot of his footage had to be deleted for the sake of a tightly bound narrative. Irrfan, who plays the cop interrogating the young hero to know how he knows all the answers on the game-show, is surprisingly candid on the cutting down of his characterization. "I saw how much my role was edited when I was dubbing for the Hindi version. My role especially in the second-half has been drastically reduced. But I'm not complaining. Just look at the impact the film has made. I'm so proud to be a part of it.", says the talented actor Shedding light on his role's radical reduction Irrfan says, "In the second-half my character goes through this complete redemptive graph which has been removed. After brutally interrogating the boy my character of the police officer personally takes him back to the game show when he gets to know that the boy did it for love. That entire track has been removed. But that's okay. Roles are often reduced for the betterment of the film. This isn't the first time this has happened to me. Actors must stop being possessive about what they shoot." Irrfan was recently in Jaipur visiting his mother and that is the reason why he wasn't at the Golden Globe ceremony. "Of course I was invited. But I had made plans to spend time with my mother long time back. If I missed this chance, I'd not have been able to visit her again for a very long time. I'd rather fly kites in my mother's home than blow kisses in LA. I'm not new to international events. I've been through them with films like The Namesake, Warrior and A Mighty Heart." Irrfan is also unperturbed by the charge of Slumdog Millionaire selling Mumbai's misery to the West. "It's the reality. Why should it be swept under the carpet? Why should Danny Boyle have been concerned about what image of Mumbai goes out when we've done nothing to keep our own city morally and physically clean? Danny saw a good dramatic story on Mumbai. He came and shot that story. As far as the filth goes, we're a dead and dying society, and the sooner we face up to it the better our chances of redeeming ourselves. Look at the Satyam scandal. Can you imagine how many working-class families have been ruined because of the avarice of top brass at the company? And I'm sure there're many other companies just waiting to do a similar con job on us. Now if tomorrow another foreign filmmaker comes to do an expose on Satyam, are we going to call him exploitative?" Irrfan is now looking forward to gauging the response to the Hindi dubbed version of Slumdog Millionaire. "I'm sure the Hindi version will be liked. It's the English version I'm apprehensive about. The intelligentsia will ask questions about the hero from the Mumbai slums speaking fluent English. The Hindi viewers will just have a good time." ,signs off the versatile actor.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 24 Jan 2009 | 11:26 am Shah Rukh is happy even after declining ‘Slumdog’ - Zee News

Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 24 Jan 2009 | 10:36 am Ashutosh Gowariker wants all 19 Minutes of 'Feel-bad Footage' to be telecastLast weekend Ashutosh Gowariker created quite a flutter in the film industry by vocally criticizing host Sajid Khan for satirizing well-known personalities from the film industry on stage. The buzz in the industry is that the Jodhaa-Akbar director wanted the footage of the heated unpleasant exchange between Sajid Khan and him to be deleted from the telecast and was upset and embarrassed to see the channel highlighting the on-stage fight in their promos of the awards telecast. The truth is quite the contrary. Ashutosh wants the entire footage of his protest to be telecast. Verbatim. And has in fact requested the channel not to cut a single line. Says a source close to Ashutosh, "He has requested the channel to keep all the 19 minutes of his argument with Sajid. Ashutosh's protest about what he feels to be the public ridicule of distinguished film personalities would serve no purpose if it didn't reach the public at large. He has felt for too long the need to stand up and protest against the entertainment at the industry's expense provided at awards functions by the anchors. Now that he has belled the cat Ashutosh wants the message to go out loudly and clearly. So he personally requested the channel to not cut any of his protest." Though several leading filmmakers agree with Ashutosh's contention that the anchors at popular awards tend to overstep the line of decorum they don't want to come forward, for the fear of being the victims at the next awards function.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 24 Jan 2009 | 10:33 am Lara Dutta in Sajid Khan's HousefullDownload image as wallpaper After delivering the smash-hit Heyy Babyy, Sajid Khan announced that his next directorial venture Housefull would star Akshay Kumar, Ritesh Deshmukh, and Deepika Padukone besides two more leading ladies. In a blatant show of bullying tactics, a major cosmetic company put its foot down after reading a news report that she'd be shaving off her hair. The bald prosthetics were done by an amazing makeup artiste named Vidyadhar. It took him three hours to make me look bald. And after I finished shooting it took an hour to take off the bald makeup." Shilpa insisted on doing all the bald scenes in one day. "Getting into the bald make up again would've been impossible. But what we've shot is amazing. Being hairless makes you look so vulnerable and childlike. I felt I had gone back to my childhood," Shilpa said from Kollam where the film Desire is being shot. At the same time, one also feels bad for the kind of ('unintentional' and 'uncalled-for') controversy that it got itself embroiled into, which provoked the country of Nepal to lay a ban on the film. For the uninitiated, the controversy started due to a dialogue in the film which claimed that the Lord Buddha was born in India, contrary to what history indicates. That explains the reason, why the ace director Rohan Sippy has gone all out to apologise for the same by clarifying "In one scene of Chandni Chowk to China, it has been mentioned that 'Buddha' was born in India, a statement that has been deemed false in Nepal. It was never our intention to hurt the sentiments of the people of Nepal, or anyone else for that matter. We would like to unconditionally apologize for any offence caused due to our error." Whether it was Dil Diya Hai or The Train (both of which incidentally had Emraan Hashmi opposite her), Geeta did gain appreciation for her contrasting acts in the two films. If she was a simple NRI girl next door in Dil Diya Hai, she played the part of seductress/con-woman with aplomb in The Train, hence enacting a negative role pretty early in her career. None of the films did well at the box office but Geeta didn't loose heart. Instead of choosing any random project coming her way that merely wanted to showcase the glam side of hers, she opted to wait. Now, close to one and a half year after the release of The Train, Geeta is ready to face the camera again. Though this won't be for a film shoot, she is still excited enough because after a lot of persuasion, she has consented to be a part of a music video. Says Geeta, "I may have been termed choosy all this while but I don't have any regrets about it. That's the way I want to shape my career. I am young with age on my side and any wrong step would have been disastrous. I would rather wait and watch than burn my fingers." What prompted her to say yes to a music video? "The sheer vision of the director and an emotional story that runs with it", Geeta is prompt in replying, "Apart from lead roles, there were offers for item songs and music videos but I didn't want to do anything where my heart was not set in. This one does sound exciting though. The setup is quite big, the scale is large and the grandeur amazing. This is not going to be one of those regular music video that you get to see all the time." "I must have posed at least a dozen odd questions in front of the makers of the music video before consenting for it. I wanted to be 100% sure", smiles Geeta who begins shoot for the music video today. Directed by Colossus, the outfit run by video directors Ajay and Lovel Arora, the video is pasteurized on Geeta and a new male model named Rahul. "Lovel is a good friend of mine and I am happy to be finally working with him. When he came to meet me, he knew and hence further convinced me that I was perfect for it", adds Geeta. The video is being pasteurized for a song by popular singer Sukhshinder Shinda who also features in the video. A well-known UK based Bhangra producer and artist; he has worked on over 200 albums while producing numerous hit songs in last couple of decades.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Jan 2009 | 11:21 am 42 Kms gets postponedClick above for more movie stills The makers of the film titled 42 Kms seem to have caught in what one would call as the âirony of lifeâ. The reason? Well, the release date of their film titled 42 Kms (based on the famous Mumbai marathon) has been postponed. The reason for this postponement is that the film's producers are locked in a battle with Standard Chartered Bank over amounts lent by the bank. The bank's contention is that the rights of the film had been assigned to it, after the producers borrowed Rs. 1.25 crore from the bank. The bank, on its part, had obtained an order of status quo from the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) on January 2, 2009, which is still continuing. The court has now asked the producers to go back to the DRT and then to the appellate tribunal before approaching the HC. Speaking about the situation, Nisha Chainani (the proprietor of Eastern Union Entertainment and also the director of 42Kms) says, "The release of the film 42 Kms is postponed as we are yet awaiting final clearance from the High Court, Mumbai regarding our matter with Joint Venture partners Standard Chartered bank." What remains to be seen is when this film actually gets to see the light of the day or should we say the finishing line!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Jan 2009 | 11:17 am
