Glenn Beck Cries on First Day of School Work

Okay, okay, so we know that Glenn Beck — for all of his sometime affability — is a little bit of a crybaby. But we didn't realize that he showed off the talent on his first day of work at Fox News. On Monday, when many of us were half-working and half-sleeping, Beck debuted his new show. He got choked up while introducing his very first major guest, Sarah Palin, because they have something in common: a special-needs child.

The tears are already being called symbolic of the future of this program, good or bad. Left-wing blogger John Aravosis says "Uh huh. Then when she comes on the air, he says 'you are one hot grandma, I'm just saying.' Yes, and we're the ones who treat Sarah Palin differently because she's a woman." The writers at Crooks and Liars say they "couldn't think of a more fitting wingnut clip to show on the day of Barack Obama's historic inauguration than Beck getting choked up introducing the person who will most likely go down as one of the biggest punch lines in political history — Sarah Palin."

But the anti-liberal media team over at Newsbusters think he "demonstrated why he's so popular with conservatives. He's a real guy talking about real issues to real people interested in the truth."

Usually, when one cries on the first day of work, it's because nobody is explaining anything to him, or she has to go number two in the big office bathroom. And in those cases, the sobbing is usually done subtly and under the desk. In Glenn's case, he's making a real statement. What do you think would happen if, say, Keith Olbermann cried on his first day on a new show?

(Meanwhile, Sarah Palin — sultrier by the minute.)

Caroline Kennedy Withdraws Senate Bid

Caroline Kennedy called David Paterson today, according to the Times, to let him know that she was no longer interested in replacing Hillary Clinton in the Senate. A source said the decision had much to do with the poor health of her uncle Ted Kennedy, with whom she is very close. Suddenly a group of about twenty grumpy New York pols are looking at a week that didn't necessarily peak on Tuesday. [NYT]

Sherman: The New York Times Parties for the Obama Economy

Down on the Bowery last night, the New York Times hosted an inauguration party at the New Museum to fête Barack Obama's nascent presidency. At around six o'clock, guests began arriving in the museum's cavernous ground floor and were handed straw top hats and American-flag pinwheels. At the rear of the lobby, bartenders mixed drinks including the"Hail to the Chief," a cocktail of Krome vodka, pomegranate juice, seltzer, lime juice, and blueberry garnish. A D.J. played sixties pop songs, and a projector displayed historic images of past inaugurations onto the bare white walls. On the other side of the room, guests lined up to enter the Facebook photo booth and have their photos beamed online.

When I arrived at the party, an attendant instructed me to wear a red, white, and blue pin showing an illustration of Obama in profile with the date 01/20/09 stenciled in white, all floating above the Times' logo. The gift bag contained a twelve-inch by twelve-inch poster of the same image. The marriage of the Times' flag and Obama's silhouette was jarring. One guest remarked that the poster looked like something put out by Pravda — state-run liberal media. (Except with less red and more blue.)

Times spokesperson Catherine Mathis explained that the Times' marketing department, and not the newsroom, staged the event. "The items in the gift bags — UTZ chips circa the era of Mad Men, discounts at Public restaurant because it's for the "people" — were chosen to celebrate the new era in politics and to allude to [the] time of Kennedy when the nation seemed to have a similar sense of hope and excitement," Mathis wrote in an e-mail. "The food was retro as well: pigs in a blanket, mashed potatoes, mini-burgers, etc." (Funny, we thought sliders were a painfully modern invention.)

Though the Times hasn't taken a pronounced pro-Obama line (the paper endorsed Hillary, after all), it certainly has found many synergies with the new administration. For one, Obama is a Niebuhr-quoting intellectual who provides the most powerful possible endorsement for the paper's cerebral sensibilities. The return of an ardent reader and a published author to the White House reaffirms what the Times stands for — as a Columbia grad, he's steeped in the values of the Upper West Side.

But there are also economic benefits to an Obama presidency. The Times — like most media outlets that saw traffic spike during this campaign — stands to gain, at least financially, from an Obama presidency. His celebrity, and power to inspire the audience, is even a profit center — selling papers ($29.95 for the "Inauguration and Election Newspaper Set") and photographs ($1,129 for a 20-by-24 Damon Winter image) — at a moment when the paper must find new ways to market itself and make money. (For readers who want their Obama first thing in the morning, there's a $24.95 set of Obama "Victory Mugs," part of a extensive collection of Obama memorabilia available at the paper's online store.)

Hence the party. But for a paper with the Times' long-held journalistic values, hosting a party for a political candidate is far from seemly. "I don't know how to explain it," one Times staffer said. "I don't know what the thinking was." These days, there's a growing chasm between the Times' print edition and its more creative, evolving website. While Maureen Dowd's party on Sunday evening in D.C. was an A-list event for the paper's print establishment and Official Washington, the Times' New Museum inauguration party was the destination of choice for the Twitter crowd.

As the Times untethers itself from the physical print product, inevitably the values and mores will evolve too. The question is whether the party is a minor hypocrisy propagated by an overeager marketing department, or the outward sign of an inward evolution, a sign of where the power increasingly lies at the paper. On the web, of course, political identity is a traffic magnet. Just look at the Huffington Post and Drudge. One future for a muscular Times presence online might be modeled after the Guardian, or, as Michael Hirschorn suggested recently in the Atlantic, the Huffington Post — whose pre-inauguration ball was infinitely more glamorous than that of the Times.

Fashion Week Organizers Plan to Invite Michelle Obama

Now that the new administration has officially been installed in the White House, Fashion Week organizers will waste no time in reaching out to Michelle Obama with charitable initiatives. While the yearly Red Dress events promoting women’s heart health is Laura Bush’s program, IMG senior vice president Fern Mallis has ideas for Mrs. Obama. “We have several other great initiatives like that that I certainly think are perfect for her and her daughters,” Mallis told us at the New York Times inauguration celebration last night. “We intend to reach out in the next day or two — after everybody catches their breath — to some people on the staff,” Mallis added. “We would obviously be thrilled beyond belief if she would come to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and be at the tents and really show the world that support of the industry.”

Mallis declined to reveal which charitable causes they’ll put forth to the new First Lady, but says they will be for a future season, not next month’s shows. “I think it’s a little early to tie her into a quick, get on board a charitable initiative,” Mallis said. “But if she just showed up to show her support, we would happily cut the ribbon and welcome everybody to help. I mean, our industry needs all the help it can get, as does every industry, and there can be certainly no better cheerleader in this day and age than Michelle Obama. I mean, I couldn’t write a script for it better if I had to.”

Donna Karan Relaunches Denim Collection With Happy Pants

A button by Robert Lee Morris, the seamless side, and inspirational inside pockets.

It feels like every label wants us in jeans this spring. First it was Lanvin for Acne, then Hollywood's Audrina and LiLo posse, and now Donna Karan is relaunching her denim collection. Set to hit stores in late February and priced at $395 to $595 a pair, these jeans may actually stand out in your closet (and not just because of the hefty price tag). Jewelry designer Robert Lee Morris designed the gold buttons, while the inside pocket features one of Donna's inspirational sayings like "Embrace life's every curve with imagination." So everytime you slip them on or off, you get a little warm and fuzzy. Not a bad way to get undressed. Also, there's no side seam in these pants, so they don't cut your leg awkwardly, which means it makes your legs look taller. And for shorties, just the thought of insta-height is inspiring.

Marvel Delivers Ram Jam to Mickey Rourke’s Pocketbook

With an Oscar nomination in the bag and a win looking like a distinct possibility, one would think that the Mickey Rourke's career would be soaring. Well, it is ... ish. Variety
reports that, in response to the continually cratering economy, Marvel Studios is looking to trim some overhead on Iron Man 2 before it starts filming later this year. And while Rourke is supposedly on the shortlist to play the villain in what will no doubt be one of 2010's highest-grossing films, Marvel has reportedly offered up a salary of just $250,000 for him to play the role (this after the studio already replaced Terrence Howard with the less expensive Don Cheadle). Unless President Obama can get this economic situation fixed right quick, you can expect Matthew Modine to replace Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man any day now.

Celebrity Fit Club’s Ross Mathews Ready to ‘Assume Any Position’ for Obama

How has the inauguration inspired Celebrity Fit Club skinny and Tonight Show comedian Ross Mathews? The funnyman has plans to run for mayor of Palm Springs. “When I go to Palm Springs I introduce myself as ‘Hi, I am your future mayor,’” Mathews told us at the Human Rights Campaign’s Out for Equality ball at the Mayflower Hotel last night, where Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, and Melissa Etheridge performed. Three handsome men interrupted us, trying to introduce themselves to the baby-face lad, but Mathews would not be distracted. “I am going to be the mayor of Palm Springs … these are not aspirations, dearheart. I'll bring an extended happy hour, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. I just want to wear kimonos and Native American jewelry. I want them to build a statue of me in town center.” But he’d also settle for a spot in Obama’s Cabinet. Fluttering his eyelashes, he said, “For Obama, I would assume any position he wanted.”

The President’s Makeup Artist Emerges; Mary J. Blige's Bowl Cut Is the New Bob

What makeup?

MAKEUP
• Lois Cassano, the makeup artist to every president since Nixon, claims they all wear makeup. Even Barack Obama. Her trick is to even out skin tone with foundation, concealer, and powder. "Presidents understand that being made up is part of the job," she says. As if the job weren't hard enough. [Allure/Daily Beauty Reporter]

• Several department stores gave away $175 million worth of free makeup yesterday, the result of a lawsuit settlement accusing stores of price-fixing. Bloomingdale's even enlisted extra security, though no stampedes have been reported. [NY Times]

HAIR
• Mary J. Blige rocked the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball in a blonde bowl cut. Are bowl cuts the new bob? Well, it is 2009 — the year of possibilities. [Beauty Counter/Style.com]

• A 72-year-old Indiana man raised money for his Rotary Club by promising to trim his eyebrows. Then his wife called him handsome again. Aw. [Jezebel]

FRAGRANCE
Iceberg will launch a woody, bergamot scent for men in March, the male counterpart to the women's fragrance that came out last year. [Now Smell This]

Detective Shakima Gregg Stymied by Law Enforcement in D.C.

Sonja Sohn, who played Detective Shakima Gregg on The Wire, did everything in her power to get close to President Barack Obama at yesterday’s inauguration ceremony. “Let me tell you something: I started with the silver ticket” — the rear-most standing area, near the National Mall — “because, you know what, I forgot to ask the people that I know who are kinda high up. So a week ago, I got a silver ticket. That I traded in for a purple ticket [the next-closest standing area]. I was in the purple area and I honestly did slip under a railing into the handicapped area. And then I slipped under another railing into the yellow area [the second-closest seated area].”

But it wasn’t just the powers of moving undetected, which she presumably picked up acting in The Wire, that Sohn deployed. She also used her special in with law enforcement. “Luckily a cop recognized me — cops love the show. And he just let me pass into the yellow area. And [as] everybody’s leaving, I got to the front.” We’d like to have seen Jim True-Frost accomplish such a thing. Incredibly, though, this did not work with all of D.C.’s finest: When we tried to dodge a line heading away from the Capitol, a female cop stopped Sohn. “Hey, my sister! My name is Sonja Sohn. I respect your job so much. I was on The Wire. My friends and I were going to go down this hill, all right?” “Ma’am,” the officer replied, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Then she gently nudged us through a gate with the rest of the cattle. “Damn,” said Sohn, moving along. “I really thought I was gonna hook that up.”

Critic Hits Dude at Sundance

Indie producer and sales agent Jeff "the Dude" Dowd — best known as the inspiration for Jeff Bridges's character in The Big Lebowski — turned a late-morning interview at the Yarrow Hotel restaurant into a Sundance smackdown today. While the directors of Dirt! The Movie (Dowd’s the sales agent for the film) prepared for an interview with Canadian journalist Katherine Monk, Dowd saw Variety critic John Anderson, who panned Dirt! in a review, eating breakfast nearby. The Dude confronted him and, even after being told to get away, stood his ground. Then Anderson landed three punches to Dowd's face.

Park City Utah police issued no arrests after interviewing Dowd, Anderson, and a restaurant full of people who'd already taken sides — locals for Dowd, fellow journalists for Anderson. Meanwhile the Dirt directors begged no comment.

Offering support for Anderson was filmmaker Nicholas Winding Refn, who received a glowing review from the critic for his movie Bronson, an explosive biopic about Britain’s most violent prisoner, Charles Bronson. "I will pay his bail money if needed," Winding Refn told us. "But think about it, we now live in a new era of film criticism thanks to John Anderson. Now, when some jerk gets into a critic’s face and he fights back, we’ll say he went 'Bronson' on them."

Biden, As Is His Wont, Makes Politically Tactless Joke

We have to admit, we already love having a vice-president that just blurts stuff out without really caring about the ramifications. It's not as funny as, say, having one who can't spell, but it's still pretty good. Earlier today Joe Biden was looking for a copy of the oath of office so he could swear in a group of senior staff. "My memory is not as good as Justice Roberts, Chief Justice Roberts," he cracked. Everyone laughed except one dude: Barack Obama, who displayed not even a hint of amusement — perhaps because, one day into his presidency, he's not ready to start a feud with the guy who will rule on the constitutionality of his policies for at least the next four years.

Karen Erickson Is Addicted to Start-ups

Karen Erickson

Karen Erickson is one of those entrepreneurial sorts that makes the rest of us look like slackers. A fashion-industry insider since 1986, she founded Erickson Beamon jewelry, went on to launch Showroom Seven, and created fashion-PR company Seventh House with her daughter, Mandie. The lady who admits she has an addiction to start-ups takes a breather to talk to us about her latest venture, new retail concept Beyond 7, which mixes fashion-forward designers, including Elise Overland and Tony Cohen, with vintage guitars and psychic-reading appointments.

You’ve been successful in setting up an internationally recognized jewelry line and a PR company. What was your inspiration for this new retail concept, Beyond 7?
I have been in the wholesale business since 1986 and over time have come to think that it is the buyers who keep the public from the best fashion. You visit the best department stores and it’s always the same thing – Vince and Theory as contemporary wear and Lanvin as designer wear. Beyond 7 was a chance to let the customer see what we believe in!

You even stock vintage guitars and furniture, and appointments are available for psychic readings — how did you decide on that?
I am a huge astrology fan and thought it could be a lure. I have been collecting furniture for years — mainly from Michigan — so it just seemed an easy addition.

Weren’t you hesitant to launch it in this current economic climate?
People always need clothes.

What sort of woman shops at Beyond 7?
Quite simply anyone who's fabulous.

Who are your favorite designers?
All the designers we represent in Showroom Seven. The list is endless, from Issa to Benjamin Cho to Orla Kiely.

What was the first designer item you ever bought?
A pair of Terry De Havilland metallic platforms — it all came back to me when we started working with Havilland during their relaunch about five years ago.

What are your future plans?
We are starting up a financial division, which will be available to help designers with the business side of things, since in these times money is severely encroaching upon fashion and art.

What is it about start-ups?
An addiction to always moving on to the next thing!

Have you had a mentor?
Donna Karan.

Best advice ever given?
Always analyze first who your good customers are and where the business is happening.

Is there anything you are particularly lusting after right now?
For me, fashion is very theoretical. I don’t think to myself, ‘I want that.’ It’s more about creating a story.

Fill in the gap: I can't live without ________.
Kabbalah. I am a student of the Kabbalah Centre. It’s a life-changing experience and commitment.

Blogger’s Cowboy-Hat Ordeal Comes to Close at Sundance

Do you know who this person pictured here is? Well, you should. For those who aren’t familiar with the story of Hollywood Elsewhere blogger Jeffrey Wells’s “emotionally vivid” cowboy hat, here’s a brief rundown: Last year, Wells had a great time staying at the Star Hotel during Sundance. As a way of indicating that he would return the following year, he left his cowboy hat behind and said, in his best Gary Cooper voice, “I’ll just pick it up in '09 where I left off in '08.” Well, damned if Sundance time didn’t come around again and Wells found himself unable to book a room at the Star Hotel. Apparently oblivious to the Old West symbolism of a man leaving his hat behind, the hotel’s proprietor had gone all 21st-century-capitalist on Wells’s ass and rented out the room to someone who actually offered a credit-card number instead of a used article of clothing.

Wells blogged about it. His commenters, always an irascible bunch, replied, resulting in what might be the greatest comments thread, like, ever. Wells himself joined the fray, and by way of explanation, dug his hole deeper: “Leaving an article of clothing, something with your scent and paw-prints and sweat residue on it, means that you intend to come back and spray your scent around some more.”

In response, the hotel gave Jeff’s cowboy hat to the Park City police. This, however, did not faze Jeff Wells, who promised to pick his hat up at the police station and wear it around town. And now here is the proof.

Kelly Rutherford’s Divorce Threatens to Cause Collateral Damage

We've been trying to ignore Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford's divorce proceedings from businessman Daniel Giersch, partly because it's uglier than Aaron Rose in a lame American Apparel suspender swimsuit, but mostly because it is messing with us by breaking the fourth wall: Lily is recently widowed and reigniting her romance with Rufus — she can't also be in the midst of a custody battle with a baby-faced German financier. It's too much, even for Gossip Girl. But today we had to stop and pay attention, because Us Weekly reported the couple is scheduled to testify in court tomorrow, where they will debate an issue of great importance.

A judge will then decide whether Rutherford, 40, can take their son Hermes, 2, to NYC this weekend while she shoots Gossip Girl.

We hope Kelly and Dan realize the seriousness of this situation. That this is not just about them being pissed off at one another, and who did what or said what, but about a person, a living human being whose future and entire psychological outlook they bear responsibility for, a person who doesn't even know where their face is without Kelly's help. That's right: It's about us, and if they don't work things out so that Kelly can bring the damn kid to New York and film the next episode of Gossip Girl, we may be in therapy forever.

Daytime’s Best TV Judge Seems to Confuse, Befuddle Queen Latifah

Judge Karen

Of all the millions of shows my poor, overworked DVR is forced to record for me at my demand, daytime televisions Judge Karen remains the one series pass I could never part with. Day after day, Karen's tellin' it like it is, and ruling with a fair but well-coordinated fist. And I'm not gonna lie: It's more than a little disappointing that Obama's first order of business was not appointing Judge Karen Mills-Francis as the much needed 10th Supreme Court Justice. Still, it does warm my tiny, shriveled heart that Judge Karen was able to go to the inaugural festivities in D.C. last night, as evidenced by the above photo and following title of the accompanying press release: JUDGE KAREN MIXES AND MINGLES AT PRESIDENT OBAMA’S INAUGURATION AND THE BET HONORS CELEBRATIONS Mixes AND mingles? I swear to God, this woman can do it all. (No sarcasm intended, I am serious, she can.) But what troubles me a little about the above picture is the confused, lost look on Queen Latifah's face. Does she not realize Judge Karen is one of the smartest women in the country? Who came from nothing to get a full scholarship to college and law school? She wears a red f**king robe for chrissakes, Queen! Why don't you put down the script for Barbershop 3: Weave My Momma Outta This and turn on the CW for 30 minutes or so to know what you're missing out on. Regular ol' pic ahead.

Michael Emerson Warns: New Season of Lost to ‘Max Out the Degree of Complication’

A conversation with Michael Emerson can sometimes be just as confusing and labyrinthine as Lost itself, but there’s one thing he told us recently that couldn’t be clearer. According to him, “This season is maxing out the degree of complication and movement that the show has been moving toward since day one.” So does that mean tonight’s premiere and the episodes that follow it will require even more copious note-taking just to make sense of them? Not quite, since even though Emerson mentioned “new notions of a time-space framework,” he promised that all this “will lead us to the final solution.” There are also, apparently, going to be some rewards for loyal viewers of the show. In addition to the expected batch of newbies, characters from seasons past will reappear in new and important ways. “They’re going to loop back and pick up on things that didn’t seem that important two years ago,” said Emerson, “but now they’re a big deal.” It sounds like the kind of stuff we’ve been dreaming about since season two. Does the world of Lost ever infiltrate Emerson’s dreams? “No, I’ve never had them ... Well, I had a dream the other night and Josh Holloway was in it," he said, then added cryptically, "But he wasn’t Sawyer — he was Josh Holloway.”

So What Was UP With Aretha Franklin’s Hat?

Yes, were struck by Aretha Franklin's hat at the inauguration yesterday. Many negative thoughts on it have been blogged since. Some simply labeled it ludicrous while others accused it of stealing attention from Barack's speech. At first we found it outlandish, but on closer consideration decided Aretha probably didn't think it would cause such a fuss. She got the hat (made of wool and embellished with Swarovski crystals) from Detroit-based milliner Luke Song. Song says he makes hats for Aretha all the time and she wanted something special for the big day (it will run in his regular collection for $179, in case you've got a Derby to attend in the near future). But we can totally see Aretha — who wears large hats regularly — waltz in there and decide a giant, stiff, crystal-embellished bow would be just the thing for the ceremony. Kind of like Blair Waldorf might select a headband without thinking twice about what the rest of us see. Go big or go home! And would you have wanted Aretha to go home? Of course not! Below, a few more reactions to the hat.

• This article notes the hat could become controversial for drawing attention away from Barack's speech. However: "[L]arge hats are traditional among older black women in the Baptist tradition ... Franklin's choice of headwear was entirely appropriate for the occasion because it is reminiscent of the style of hat that legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson wore when she sang in front of 200,000 people at the March on Washington in 1963. This is where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered what is arguably the most magnificent and inspiring speech in history, the 'I've Got a Dream' speech." [Associated Content]

Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros.

• On a lighter note, Ellen DeGeneres wears a similar hat on her talk show today. "That would of [sic] been so embarrassing. The next thing you know, we would have been in Us Weekly's 'Who Wore it Better?'" she kids. "They said this is the only one they made! I can't believe it!" Ha. [Us]

• Best Week Ever is asking readers to make their own animated Blingees with a photo of Aretha in the hat. They've provided two examples: One includes a white cat and a disco ball while the other includes a roll of toilet paper that reads 2009 and a cigarette. Click and you'll understand. [Best Week Ever]

• This blogger thinks Aretha's bold fashion statement will save the hat industry and found a number of similar styles regular folks can buy. Ooh, ooh, us first! [MyItThings]

• This blogger has declared bows on hats a trend and compiled a collection of hats with bows you can buy. These bows are tiny by comparison and somewhat disappointing. [Etsy]

• Only a women's magazine: "[Y]es, it might be considered a DON'T on a lesser woman, on a less important kind of day. But here, today, on Aretha, it totally works: you have to give the Queen of Soul major props for flaunting her signature, spotlight-stealing style on such a momentous occasion. Besides, it beats all those Elmer Fudd–like trapper hats we've seen so much of lately." What say you? [Glamour]

Poppet Vintage Store to Close in the East Village

Inside the Poppet store.

The recession is taking down a lot of our favorite stores, and we're not happy. The latest victim is Poppet, a vintage store in the East Village known for its quality pieces with a colorful Mediterranean twist. The store will close just after Fashion Week in February, says owner Suzanne Pettit, who opened the store in 2006. "Everyone has suffered large drops in income and with small businesses we don't have as many resources at hand to ride out a tough economy like this," Pettit tells us. "I only have the one store, so my way of downsizing is closing down the store. I had to lay off my two part-time employees, go to a smaller situation where I have less overhead, no Manhattan rent, and insurance that I have to worry about so much." An unfortunate set of circumstances, though an increasingly common story line. But there's a silver lining. Pettit plans to continue her business privately, going to vintage shows and hosting fashion designers and private clients. Still, for a store known for its racks full of vintage treasures, it's regrettable to see it go dark. "I'm sad, and yet it's a next step," Pettit says. "I feel like I'm going into hibernation until things calm down and we see what happens with the economy. It's just tough right now for a lot of people." And tough times call for big discounts: All clothing is 50 percent off, and shoes, bags, jewelry, and accessories are 20 percent off. So stop by before this one shutters for good.

Poppet, 350 E. 9th St., nr. First Ave. (212-924-3190); Thurs.–Sat. (noon–7), Sun. (noon–6).

Artist Matthew McGuinness Looks Back in Anger

George W. Bush may have helicoptered off into the sunset yesterday, but artist Matthew McGuinness reminds us that 43's legacy won't soon be forgotten. For the latest installment of his Casper Disasters series, McGuinness has taken scenes of chaos and discord from Bush's Iraq War and creatively silkscreened them to include wailing ghosts. On view at Greene Contemporary through February 8.

Did Obama Wear a Bullet-Resistant Suit Yesterday?

Nothing's getting past that suit...

If you're like us, you had a mild panic attack yesterday when President Obama got out of the car and walked down Pennsylvania Avenue with Michelle. Where was the Secret Service? Why isn't there a Popemobile for the man? Think of the snipers, people! But fear not. Apparently, our prez was wearing a bullet-resistant suit. Oh yes, no mere Kevlar vest can do for our new man. The suit, possibly by Colombian designer Miguel Caballero, could in theory stop a 9MM. Whew! This type of clothing has three levels of bullet-proofiness, and, if indeed Obama was wearing a Caballero design, we imagine it was the top-tier one. Sharply dressed and can dodge bullets? Swoon.

Young Jeezy and Jay-Z Remind You of That Thing That Happened Yesterday

If you’re not quite ready to let yesterday’s good vibes go, this clip — shot, Cloverfield-style, at Love Nightclub in D.C. the Sunday before the inauguration — is for you: On an incredibly crowded stage and to an incredibly hyped crowd, Young Jeezy and Jay-Z unveil a “My President” remix that just about makes everybody’s day. Jeezy’s intro is great — “I wanna thank two people: I wanna thank the muthafucka overseas that threw two shoes at George Bush, and I wanna thank the muthafuckas who helped they move they shit up out the White House – get it moving, bitch! My president is muthafucking black!” — but the new Jay verse, as the far-less-exciting studio version attests, isn’t much (“I was hot before Barack / imagine what I’m gon’ do” is really the only sort-of-good line). Nonetheless, live, and intermittently a cappella, even goofy lines like “My president is black, but his house is all white!” totally kill.

Even Hitler Is Embarassed By This Redneck

Just when you think that maybe, by some divine intervention, America might be on a fast-track to success, a woman who named her children Adolf Hitler, Himmler and Aryannation ends up on the news in a segment that somehow ISN'T about The Missing Link being discovered. Confused? So are we. The story goes like this: A woman, let's just call her Shampooless for the time being, manages to fall in love and have three children. Her and her husband name said three children (innocent until proven cavepeople) Hitler, Himmler and the uber-catchy Aryannation. Authorities, upon discovering this, remove the children from their home, in a maneuver known as "What Took So G*ddamned Long?" Now, Mom's is upset... almost as upset as when Nell Carter got cast on Gimme a Break. And she's asking for your help (assuming you are a true-blooded white, of course.) Watch the following video, and try not to pick up your computer tower and throw it out the window. Something tells me even Hitler himself would be all "I can't believe how ignorant those people are." (Only it would sounds a bit more like this, 0:57.) BONUS CAMEO: The aunt is sort of like Jackie from Roseanne. Only, instead of annoying, unannounced visits, she wants to kill all the Jews and Blacks.

America's Studliest Ballet Dancer Returns

Back when ballet dancers were superstars —after Nureyev but before Baryshnikov— the most celebrated American male dancer was also the most unlikely. A blue-collar kid from Bayside, Queens, Edward Villella became the face of George Balanchine's New York City Ballet during its golden age in the sixties; he was the only American dancer ever asked to dance an encore at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. In 1986, he started the Miami City Ballet. Tonight, the company makes its Manhattan debut at City Center.

There's talk of companies like yours doing Balanchine better now than NYCB? What do you make of that?
When I made Miami City Ballet, it was important for me to present Balanchine the way I thought he wanted to be danced. He picked things up very fast, he had the quickest feet and the quickest mind you could imagine. When I was Pulcinella, he said, "You know, Pulcinella likes to look under the skirts of young girls." I immediately got the characterization! He had revelations that gave you an internal point of departure, moving images of who you should be. I approach our dancers with that sense of awareness — body to body, mind to mind. You know, I stopped dancing overnight. I was dancing at the White House, I got a terrible pain in my leg, and when I got back to New York our orthopedic surgeon said, "Your career is over." It was that blunt. I finally decided to become an artistic director so I could pass on what I'd learned.

What was appealing about the Miami's offer?
It was an untouched canvas, mine from the ground up.

You were a street kid who played baseball. Ballet school seems like a bit of a, well, leap.
I was embarrassed and humiliated. I'd wear my baseball uniform to class and sort of walk up to the door backwards. My father, who ran a trucking business in the Garment Center, made me quit and go to college. It was just as I was falling in love with this art form, this physicality that is mind-driven, that adheres to music and theater and aesthetic senses. After college [he New York State Maritime School, where he was a champion boxer], I knew I had to be a dancer, and my father didn't speak to me for a year. But I invited my parents to our second opening night, and I had three major roles in four ballets. After that, he became a balletomane.

You were held up as a paragon of heterosexuality. The word "virile" was used a lot.
[Laughs.] Much has been made of my athletic background and that I had this kind of athletic attack.

But thanks in part to you, there was a real change in the perception of male dancers.
I hope so. The problem, of course, is historic. Once you say you're a dancer, you're stigmatized. I was asked two or three times to go on Johnny Carson and I refused. They said, "Why don't you want to do it? You'll do some dancing, and Johnny will make fun." I just didn't want to participate in someone making fun of my art form, and to make reference to my heterosexuality versus the majority of gay dancers.

Are dancers better now, or were the sixties and seventies really the golden age of talent?
In the Balanchinian days, I danced Prodigal Son for sixteen years before anyone else danced it. Once you got a role, it was yours. My company has so many consecutive performances that I can give [young dancers] responsibilities beyond their grasp. You don't spend time warehoused. If you learn a ballet, you dance it. Get 'em out there!

Inside the Mind of Lady Gaga

Should she shut her playboy mouth?

Lady Gaga: "If I decide to make a coat red in the show, it's not just red. I think: is it communist red? Is it cherry cordial? Is it ruby red? Or is it apple red? Or the big red balloon red? I mean there's like so many fucking different kinds of red. And so you have to say, well, what are we trying to say in this scene? Is it a happy red? Or a sad red? Is it a lace red? Or a leather red? Or a wool red? It's like there are so many components to making a show and making art, and my school taught me how to think that way." [Guardian]

POSSIBILITY: The Jonas Brothers May Have Slept In the Lincoln Bedroom

Jonas-Lincoln.jpgYesterday marked one of the most historic days in America's history, as Barack Obama was sworn in as our 44th President. But yesterday was notable for another reason altogether. That's because on January 20, 2009, Barack and Michelle Obama officially became THE GREATEST PARENTS IN THE WORLD. That's because, while they were off being adorable and classy and dancey all over D.C., they gave a very special "First Night In the White House Gift" to daughters Malia and Sasha. The girls -- who must have been exhausted -- invited over a couple of friends (let's call them "the luckiest, do-nothing children in America" for conveniences sake) for an exclusive home screening of High School Musical 3 and Bolt. And after that? All amazing parental mayhem broke loose. The girls were given a White House scavenger hunt to complete, in an effort to familiarize them with their new home. And please... GET THIS:
At the end of Malia and Sasha's scavenger late-night hunt, they opened a door to discover their favorite musical performers: Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas -- the pop boy band sensation who first exploded on the Disney Channel and also appeared earlier this week at the Kids' Inaugural Concert.
Did you read that? At the end of the scavenger hunt... THE ACTUAL JONAS BROTHER SHOWED UP. I'll tell you this: If they DID in fact get to spend the night in the Lincoln bedroom, Abe Lincoln himself was doing one of two things: He was either rolling over in his grave... or extremely aroused. Or both. Also, Barack & Mich, you're starting to make every other parent in the country look bad. Tone it down a crotch, you've only been in there for 24 hours. (p.s. Love you guys, K.I.T., stay sweet, never change.)

Twenty Questions the Fifth Season of Lost Must Answer

Now that the presidential inauguration is behind us, we can officially turn our attention to this week's other massively anticipated, world-changing event: the return of Lost! It's been eight long months since we last left the island, though, and, despite our excitement, we'll admit that we can't quite remember all of the unsolved mysteries that television's most complicated show was juggling at the conclusion of its fourth season. Who's the Eyeliner guy again? How many toes did that statue have? To better prepare you for tonight's two-hour season premiere, we've compiled a list of twenty big questions we hope Lost's writers answer soon.

Jorge Garcia on Why Lost’s Hurley Might Not Be So Crazy After All

After a stint on Becker and a memorable appearance on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jorge Garcia is now best known as the Lost actor most likely to say “Dude.” For four seasons now, he’s been adding much-needed comic relief to the show’s mix of tragedy and sci-fi mystery as Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, a role that was created specifically for him. But as Lost has turned darker, his character has had to deal with his own hard times, from struggling with insanity to an unrivaled spate of bad luck, thanks to some very dangerous lottery numbers. We discussed Hurley's seeing dead people and his falling-out with Jack while Garcia was hanging out in his Honolulu home.

Do you think Hurley is actually crazy?
You mean the fact that he sees dead people?

Well, that and the fact that he was in an institution before and after he went to the island.
He struggles with it. I think the person who thinks he might be going crazy is the one who is sane, because with crazy people, it doesn’t ever really cross their mind.

What about the ghosts?
I don’t think they are solely coming from his brain.

How long will it take for the Oceanic Six to return to the island? The entire season?
Time may jump, as far as how they tell the story. The logistics of getting there may not be as important as certain things that happen once they’re there, so they might jump ahead and go back and fill in the blanks that need to be filled in.

What’s the worst theory about the show that you’ve ever heard?
There’s a theory that the whole thing was going on inside the dog’s head, that it was his imagination. I’m pretty sure that one’s wrong.

What’s your favorite Hurley-centric episode from the first four seasons?
“Dave,” I think, was the first one where I really got to show a lot of different sides. I felt like that was one of the biggest steps in playing the part of Hurley for me.

Is Hurley an innocent character or just as guilty as everyone else?
He definitely feels guilty about things, like leaving people on the island, and being the cause of his grandfather’s death. But when you see what other people have done in their past, I guess you could say he’s a lot more innocent than most.

Are there ever cast parties?
Yeah, every now and again Josh [Holloway] has a barbeque, and I have parties at my house. I had a pumpkin-carving party right before Halloween.

Why did Hurley apologize to Jack for going with Locke instead of him?
There is definitely a falling-out somehow between Jack and Hurley, and Matt [Fox] and I have discussed it every now and again — how did this happen? Early on, from like season one and the start of the show, Hurley was the one guy Jack could always trust was going to back him, no matter what. We’re curious how that’s going to pan out.

Do you miss having a love interest on the show?
That was cool, and it was fun to do. I mean, if that was something that got revisited later, I’d be fine with that!
