Kismat Konnection goes for Oscar library

We still are some time away from the Oscars, but, India is surely making its presence felt at the Oscar library already, as most of the films that were released recently, have found their way to the Oscar library! The last few weeks had seen the likes of the scripts of Rock On, Sarkar Raj, Heroes being invited to be a part of this prestigious library. The latest one to join the gang is the Shahid-Vidya starrer smash hit film Kismat Konnection. Apparently, the Library of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (which is better known as the Oscars library) had expressed interest in acquiring a copy of the screenplay of Kismat Konnection for the permanent core collection. The scripts in their collection are made accessible for research purposes only; students, filmmakers, writers and actors are among their regular patrons. On this happy occasion, Ramesh Taurani, owner of TIPS, said, "I am very pleased with the inclusion of the screenplay of Kismat Konnection to the Oscar Library. TIPS Films has always endeavored to give the audiences great stories backed with great entertainment value. It's always a pleasure to be recognized for your craft by one of the most respectable film bodies of our times." After having won everyone's hearts with not just its simplistic storyline, but also its lilting music, Kismat Konnection will surely have a field day at the Oscar Library too!

The music of Yash Raj Films' Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has created a benchmark in the digital entertainment by featuring in the list of top 10 album sales for iTunes, the world's most popular online music store. This is the first time the music album of a Bollywood film has made it to the album download charts of iTunes. Commenting on this achievement Neeraj Roy, MD & CEO, Hungama Mobile, said, "This is yet another example of Indian content transcending boundaries and making a significant mark in the digital music space, worldwide. Hungama would like to congratulate Yash Raj films, the music directors Salim- Sulaiman and all those associated with the film." "While single song downloads are common, an entire album being downloaded on digital download services is rare and this showcases the great music that's been composed for the film," he added. Hungama, which owns the digital rights to Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, is the exclusive distributor of Indian content to iTunes. iTunes is available in 22 countries around the world, including USA, the UK, and the European Union. Kangna Ranaut bares it in Dabboo Ratnani's 2009 calendar

Buzz has it that the makers of the world-famous Dictionary and Pictionary are upset, as after their fanatic research, they ultimately settled for the synonyms of Heat as 'warmth' and 'high temperature', whereas the guys at Pictionary used the photograph of the sun to show what Heat was all about. But when they saw the snap of Kangna Ranaut in the ace photographer Dabboo Ratnani's calendar of 2009, they, in unison, decided that nothing in the world can be as HOT as this chic! One look at the snap and you will know as to what the whole world is talking about! After having scorched the silver screens with her stellar performance in Fashion, Kangna seems to be all over the place! If Fashion wasn't enough for the zillions of this scorcher's fans, then, be ready to be attacked by the ocular pangs of Kangna in her forthcoming film Raaz 2-The Mystery Continues, in which she stars with her real-life sweetheart Adhyayan Suman. But till the time the film releases we are all praise and thankful to Dabboo Ratnani for giving our parched eyes some relief in the form of Kangna Ranaut, who simply has redefined the term 'HOT' and that too in her own way and style! Atta girl, Kangna...Happy New Year to us!

LA premiere brings top Hollywood directors to Chandni Chowk To China

Click above for more stills John Landis, the director of Beverly Hills Cop 3, Blues Brothers, Coming To America and Trading Places, Rob Cohen of Dragonheart, The Fast & Furious, Bruce Lee Story and McG, and who has just finished Terminator 4, were some of the topnotch Hollywood directors who turned up for the Los Angeles premiere of Chandni Chowk To China, on Wednesday night at the posh Steve J. Ross theatre, right inside the Warner Brother premises. Minutes before he jetted off with his cast to New York for the next premiere, director Nikhil Advani said, "We couldn't stay for the LA premiere for more than 35 minutes because we had to leave for the NY premiere. But I could see the audience which included directors John Landis, Rob Cohen and McG plus the top brass from Warner Brothers were laughing at the right places and for the right reasons and in an emotional scene, they all went silent." It's going to be a glamorous whirligig for our very own Deepika Padukone and Akshay Kumar. Says Nikhil, "We didn't know what the exact turnout at the LA premiere was going to be. The RSVPs kept coming till the last hour. Over here the biggest of stars let you know if they aren't coming (quite unlike the Mumbai premieres). It's Warner Brothers' prestigious Bollywood product and they're releasing it on at par with any Hollywood film with 50 prints in the US." After the LA premiere, the cast and director will attend the New York premiere on January 8, followed by the Toronto premiere on Jan 9. "We'll then proceed to London on Jan 10. On the 12th , is the London premiere at the Empire Theater at Leicester Square", added Nikhil. After the film's Indian release, Nikhil goes for the Hong Kong and Dubai premieres of his film. However the much- expected premiere of Chandni Chowk To China in the Chinese Republic has not materialized. Apparently, the Chinese government has denied the film the permission for release. Says Nikhil, "What can I say? China only allows twenty international films to be released every year. Anyway, the film will be out on pirated DVDs in China. So the people there will see how much we've done to honour the country." Interestingly, Nikhil Advani saw his own film for the first time on Tuesday. "I've to say, that, at 2 hours and 32 minutes, it's much shorter than my last film Salaam-e-Ishq. In fact, after I saw the film, I edited out three minutes of playing time."

Konkona Sen's joke is out: I'm not really a lesbian in the film

So far we thought that Konkona Sen-Sharma was following in Shabana Azmi's foot steps to play a lesbian in her new film The President Is Coming. Konkona's next two releases The President Is Coming and Luck By Chance have her pretty agog. "They aren't the usual kind of films. The President Is Coming is a very funny mock-documentary I cracked up when I was doing it." The film is Konkona's own Dostana. Her character pretends to be a lesbian to get her own way. Konkona says, "It's a marketing strategy for the film, and I don't mind. The film's release got postponed because of 26/11. I was in Rajasthan when it happened, and was really very worried when I saw the news on TV. So, though I was lucky not to be harmed, I was shocked and disgusted…The film didn't matter at that moment. But my other film Dil Kabbaddi got released, soon after the 26/11 incident. Some people liked the film, but not too many, I admit." Konkona was working throughout 2008, though she didn't have that many releases. "Rituparno Ghosh's Sunglass and The President Is Coming got delayed. Now I've Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance. Zoya had written the script so long ago. She knew what she wanted. I play a starlet. It's quite funny. My character is the lead in B-graders and is also the 'hero ki behen'. I had to keep dressing in different costumes. While one day I was a junior artiste of the 1930's, the very next day I was a nurse! Like Farhan's character, I too play a struggler in my own right." Konkona has Luck By Chance coming out in January. "And then I go straight to Wake Up Sid in June. Both have me playing the formal female lead. But, to me the impact of the role has nothing to do with its size. Sometimes you do a film just because of the director."

Wishing Farhan Akhtar a very happy Birthday

In a world where even the proverbial 'jack of all trades' is fast becoming a rarity, here is a man who is not just a jack, but Master of all trades. He is none other than Bollywood's very own Boy Wonder Farhan Akhtar, who also happens to be our Birthday boy of the day! Born to celebrity parents (Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani), its only recently that Bollywood woke up to the magical powers of its latest 'It' boy! Even though, Farhan could have chosen to walk the silver path laid by his celebrity parents, he chose the 'hard working' way to success! That explains the reason as to why he started his career by working as an apprentice at the tender age of 17, which was followed up by doing multiple jobs of all shapes and sizes! True to the saying, 'Hard work always pays...but in its own sweet pace and space', Farhan took some time before he actually started 'calling the shots' (quite literally)! It's only after he got himself equipped with ample experience and expertise, this dude with an attitude made his writing and directorial debut with the mega smash hit flick Dil Chahta Hai, which escalated the careers of practically everyone associated with it. This was followed by yet another cracker of a movie Lakshya. All of these two films not just led Farhan to make his third 'Rocking film' which was aptly titled Rock On, but also gave him an opportunity to act and sing on screen as well. And it was this opportunity which gave India its very own multi-talented Superstar! Join Bollywood Hungama as we wish the phenomenon called Farhan Akhtar a very happy Birthday, simply by posting your messages below:

Rahman's Slumdog Millionaire song goes to the Oscars

A. R Rahman lost a dear friend and sound recordist H Sridhar days after 26/11. It has left the musical maestro shaken but not devastated. Without telling a soul, he left for the US to submit his Hindi song 'Jai Ho' from Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars.. a song that actually belonged to Subhash Ghai! The song has already been nominated for the 'New York Critics Choice Award', and the soundtrack has fetched Rahman the 'Los Angeles Critics Choice Award' for the best score. The soundtrack has just received a Golden Globe Nomination and the song is a hot favourite at the Oscars. And to think that the song belonged to Subhash Ghai in Yuvvraaj. It's not just the 'Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai' song that Subhash Ghai allowed the British director Danny Boyle and A. R. Rahman to use in Slumdog Millionaire. It now comes to light that Ghai also gave away an entire original song from his own Yuvvraaj to Slumdog Millionaire. How did this bewildering barter of creativity happen? Says the song's writer Gulzar, "I had written a song called 'Aaja Aaja Shamiane Ke Taley, Zari Wale Neele Aasman Ke Taley' for Subhash Ghai's Yuvvraaj. But then for some reason Subhash felt he didn't need that song in the film. So Rahman suggested that we use the track in Slumdog Millionaire because it fitted perfectly. We asked Subhash and he readily agreed. I must say it was very generous of him. It's my first international project." Subhash Ghai brushes off the compliment. "There's nothing generous about it. Give and take is an integral part of any creative field. Look at M F Husain Saab's generosity. He called me up all the way from Dubai to say he loved Yuvvraaj. After the battering that it got, his words came as balm to my soul, especially when Husain Saab said he saw the film twice and liked it even better the second time. I happily gave the 'Aaja Aaja' song to Rahman when he said that it was needed for Danny Boyle's film. I felt the song was slightly too soft and subtle for the aggressive character (Zayed Khan). I'm glad they could use it." And now the song that Subhash Ghai so generously handed over to another film is being submitted for the Oscars. 'Aaja Aaja Shamiane Ke Taley' is being entered in for the Best Song Category at the Oscars. Any regrets for giving over the song? "None at all. Every film and every song has its own destiny. That song was meant to be in Slumdog Millionaire. I'm just happy that a Hindi song is being noticed heard and hummed in the US by non-NRI audiences," says Ghai. Speaking from the US, Rahman says, "I'm here for work. But I've to say the sudden death of my friend and my permanent sound recordist H Sridhar (who died of a cardiac arrest on December 1) has been a big blow for me. He was a close friend and professional associate for twenty years. He was not just a sound recordist but also a fantastic keyboards player. He revolutionalized sound recording. I am shattered? It's a personal and professional loss. But life goes on. It has to."

Check out: SRK and KJo on the sets of My Name Is Khan

Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Karan Johar have given us some of the biggest blockbusters of Hindi cinema such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Hence, when the trio is coming back with a film after a hiatus of nearly 8 years, then expectations are bound to be gargantuan. Shooting for Dharma Productions' My Name Is Khan starring SRK and Kajol in lead roles is currently underway in and around Los Angeles. The buzz is that SRK plays a person suffering from Asperser's Syndrome (an autism related disorder) who gets into trouble with cops abroad especially because of his surname 'Khan'. Kajol plays SRK's better-half in the film. Even though the film has a serious undertone, with best buddies SRK, KJo and Kajol coming together, the atmosphere on the sets is one of fun and frolic. SRK's witty one-liners combined with KJo's wacky sense of humor is sure to keep the unit members entertained. As for the film, all eyes are curious to see if these three best buddies can translate their real life Dostana onto reel-life one more time.

"I am unaware about Karan Johar hosting 'Oye! It's Friday'" - Farhan Akhtar

While some media reports have gone overboard in declaring Karan Johar as the next host for 'Oye! It's Friday', the current host of the show has expressed ignorance about the latest developments. As per Farhan Akhtar, he doesn't have a clue about Karan Johar being roped in and has himself read about it only on the websites. "There have been some rumors that Karan Johar is going to be hosting the show in future but I haven't really got any first hand information on this. Even I have read it on only on the web", says Farhan whose transition from being a director/actor/singer to a host has met with its share of followers and detractors. So is he going to continue the show for many more episodes to come? "I was always meant to host 12 episodes of 'Oye! It's Friday' and I am going by that commitment. There was never any doubt about this since I myself wanted to be a part of this for only this duration. I have Luck By Chance releasing on 30th January and had to eventually get busy with the film. Then there is also Kartik Calling Kartik in which I am acting so the understanding about my time commitment to the show was always there", explains Farhan. As per the reports, the show was always meant to have prominent directors hosting it. If it isn't Karan, then who are the other possible choices? "I don't have any idea about that though my only hope for the show is that the host along with the makers can maintain the kind of humor that is required. I guess that's most important since there is a certain quality and profile to 'Oye! It's Friday' that makes it so special", says Farhan. On a parting note, he does raise a question though on the possibility of Karan Johar hosting the show, "As per my understanding, Karan is currently in Los Angeles shooting for his film with Shah Rukh Khan and would be there for some more time before their schedule is through. Given the circumstances, I am not too sure how it would be possible for Karan to host the show while being in US." Point taken Farhan. It's over to the makers of 'Oye! It's Friday' to announce their next host for the show!

Farhan gets intimate, measures Deepika's height

With Chandni Chowk To China getting ready for release, this week's special guest on 'Oye! It's Friday!' is none other than Deepika Padukone. What makes the episode special is the fact that Farhan Akhtar celebrates his birthday in this episode where there are tons of surprises and gifts galore. The episode travels from Chandni Chowk To China with Deepika Padukone and then to Mumbai with the latest item-hotty Sherlyn Chopra who comes up with a sizzling performance. Add to that some action from Sweden with Mattias Lindstrom and his spectacular 'Man on wheels' - all of which makes this week's episode worth remembering. - Deepika's love for Ranbir is a known fact. However, expect some more sweet nothings as Farhan gets candid with the beautiful Deepika Padukone while chatting about her relationship with Ranbir Kapoor. Deepika also shares her experience working with Akshay Kumar in CC2C. - Deepika also narrates her hopes and dreams of settling down and getting married. Of course, she also talks about her new found friendship with none other than Sonam Kapoor, whose Delhi 6 would be releasing just a few weeks after CC2C. - It becomes a full on fun outing as there is a very special surprise for Farhan Akhtar in the form of his dad's (the renowned lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar) visit on the show. Giving everyone a surprise visit, Javed Akhtar wishes his son a very Happy Birthday, only to continue chatting with Deepika. Expect some naughty talks in the offering as the loving dad reveals quite a few of Farhan's secrets and childhood pranks! - In the true tradition of fun being a dominant factor on 'Oye! It's Friday!', Deepika also goes on to endorse, hold your breath, 'Oye Hair product'! - Deepika is known for her towering height. Well, Farhan eventually gets the right measurements of her, well for height of course, by bringing a measuring tape on the show, making her stand upright and hold the tape from the top as he places the other end on her feet. Wanna guess her real height? - As is known by one and all by now, for her upcoming film Chandni Chowk To China, Deepika Padukone underwent rigorous training in martial arts. Not someone to just believe in hearsay (in lighter vein of course), Farhan put her training to the test by asking her to break a 3 layered brick! Not to be taken for a ride by someone, the young lady convinced Farhan to do the deed instead! Did Farhan manage to break the brick or break his hand? - Talking about stunts, Deepika demonstrates her prowess as a 'stunt queen', as learnt in Chandni Chowk To China, in the show. Watch out for her next move! - Mattias Lindstrom from Sweden gets an international touch and class to the show and comes up with an unbelievable 'Man on wheels' act! He has been known globally for his spell-binding and awe-inspiring 'Cyre Wheel' act since 1999, hence making this segment belong to 'Don't Miss This One' category! - Watch out for some 'Balle Balle' as 'Bhangra Power' comes on full force with Farhan being the center of attraction. There are quite a few professional 'bhangra' dancers who storm the show and make Farhan join them for the jig. That's not at all as Javed Akhtar and Deepika too are not to be left behind and match the steps! - Meanwhile hot and steamy Sherlyn Chopra makes sure that it's not just Deepika who entertains Farhan on his birthday special. She sets the stage on fire with her sizzling bold performance of Dard-e-Sherlyn and 'Khawaab Dekhe Jhoothe Moothey' [Race]. - The fun and dance continues with Deepika getting back to the 'Dhoom Tana' [Om Shanti Om] act. What makes her revive the dance number? Well, she teaches none other than Farhan Akhtar the steps and the 'amrapali mudra' made ever-so-memorable by Farah Khan! - The Om Shanti Om fun isn't limited to 'Dhoom Taana'. Farhan Akhtar gets into his jovial best as he imitates Deepika's much remembered scene 'Ek Chutki Sindoor' from the film. - There are some somber moments in the show as well with Farhan Akhtar trying his hand at piano. In the last episode it was Priyanka's chance to play drums while this week it is Farhan himself taking his piano lessons. 'Oye! It's Friday!' is turning out to be some musical show! This one is slated to be a fun, touching and electrifying episode. Don't miss 'Oye! It's Friday!' on 9th January 2009 at 10:00 PM only on NDTV Imagine.

"The President... is very reality TV in format" - Kunaal Roy Kapur

After a brief delay, The President... is finally 'coming' this Friday. No wonder, director Kunaal Roy Kapur is happy that his debut film is finally making it to the theaters. Though he has experienced success with The President Is Coming, courtesy its successful run as a play, he understands that it is a different ballgame altogether when it comes to a cinematic adaptation. Still, he insists that for the audience that is fed reality television day in and night out, the narrative of The President Is Coming would be quite relatable. "My film is pretty much reality TV in format and this is why audience would be able to easily relate to the narration style. In any case there are so many reality shows that are in our face and hence the style doesn't need much introduction. Hence, it was a conscious decision to retain this style", says Kunaal Roy Kapur who has also retained most of the cast from the play in his film. But doesn't he feel that even in reality TV, there are quite a few happenings that are obviously staged? "Pretty much so", he is quick to react, "In fact if you ask me, there is nothing reality about reality TV. Everything seems to be simply staged. It's a style that is cluttering our TV because seemingly there is no other way of entertainment. Looking at the ongoing trend, at least our entire team has tried to be honest to the art." "Hopefully, in spite of the bizarre theme of the film (that of the President of USA looking at shaking a hand with an Indian during his visit to the country), audiences would be able to involve themselves into the narrative style", he laughs. The story has earlier been told as a stage play and moreover is mostly in English. Doesn't he feel like loosing out on a substantial audience due to these factors? "What you term as limitations are in fact the strengths of The President Is Coming," asserts Kunaal, "In any case we have targeted a niche audience for the film. As for those who already know the plot then well, the theater audience is anyways a very small percentage of Indian audiences." He concludes by stating, "All said and done, I firmly believe that if the quality of your product is good enough, it would appeal to people. In case of my film, I am sure it would because the story is funny and would strike a chord with the young urban people. If that happens, it should be good enough for the movie as well as me as a storyteller!"
