Zoya Akhtar talks about the songs of Luck By Chance

Excel Entertainment's and Big Pictures' next Luck By Chance slated to release on January 30 today launched their music. Directed by Zoya Akhtar and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, Luck By Chance stars Farhan Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Kapoor, Isha Sharvani and in a very special appearance Hrithik Roshan. The music has been given again by the trio Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy while the lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. Luck By Chance is already making a mark with audiences since the trailers have been released. This will be Farhan's second film as an actor after Rock On. Zoya, the film's director, talks about each of the songs in the album: "I am really kicked with this album. I am an avid listener of music and have an extremely varied taste. I was extremely particular about getting the right sound and the perfect mood for each of the song situations. The film is set in the film industry so we have 2 tracks that are supposed to be part of a Hindi film soundtrack. Those 2 tracks are 'Baawre' and 'Pyaar Ki Daastaan'. 'Baware' is "Rajasthan on acid". It a very upbeat folk dance track fused with a break beat. It is also called the circus song as that is what it is picturised on. The visuals are a frenetic celebration of the Hindi movie item song and I wanted the track to be very Indian but have the pace of a trance track. We have used traditional 'manganyar' singers from Rajasthan on the on the song. 'Pyaar Ki Daastaan' is a quintessential love song. It has a beautiful melody and the kick of the dhol that reminds us of tunes that are famous in love stories in the industry. 'Yeh Zindagi Bhi' has a different structure than what we are used to. It is the song that features the opening credits of the film. It has a trip hop influence. 'O Rahi Re Is Sufi'- classical in influence but instrumented with guitars. 'Sapno Se Bhare Naina' is a drum and base track with Indian classical vocals (raag bhairavi). And finally the Circus Baware Remix, the 'Baware' track remixed by the Medival Pandits. They have done a beak beat version of the track. The process for great fun we spent 15 days and came up with 6 scratches. These were the final tunes that went into the album. We never redid a single track. They were just perfect for the situations and the mood. It is a very eclectic album with something in it for everyone." With an impressive track record of producing hit soundtracks together, Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy, Javed Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, the team now comes out with the music of Luck By Chance.

Farhan Akhtar on the cover of Jan 2009 issue of GQ

Now that New Year is here, all the magazines, glossies and newspapers will surely have a gala time flashing the celebs on their covers. Kick starting this year's magazine covers-story category is none other than the super cool magazine GQ. After having created a sensational launch in India with the super cool Saif Ali Khan, followed by Daniel Craig no less, GQ welcomes the New Year with the one and only Farhan Akhtar, the name to watch out for this year. In this issue, the actor-director-extreme sportsman-rockstar etc, Farhan Akhtar speaks about life after Rock On, male bonding, star 'kid-dom' and breaking 'Bollywood formula' boundaries. Farhan, in this issue, speaks all of everything. A few gems from him includes, "I must have been the only kid in the world who knew about and loved movies so much that I would wake up early for school, just so that I could watch a little bit every day. I had this almost romantic relationship with film. I was always watching something and collecting movies - tapes, then LDs when they came and now DVDs. There has never been anything else that I wanted to do." Explaining the reason to choose Farhan as the 'cover-boy', Che Kurrien, Editor GQ India, says, "For the cover of GQ India's first issue of 2009, we chose Farhan Akhtar - the renaissance man of Indian cinema. Akhtar acts, writes, directs and sings, inspiring men across the country to go and chase their dreams, whatever their line of work." No one in the world has got any 'proof' to negate that! Words to go, Farhan...we mean... way to go! For the curious and the impatient ones, the date to remember is 30th December as the January 2009 issue hits the stands then!

"SRK told me that Om Shanti Om was a tribute to my granduncle" - Vaishali Desai

Teen stars usually face a tough struggle to be taken seriously in Bollywood. But this chirpy, all smiles, young and beautiful teen, ready to be a queen in Bollywood wants to be taken seriously. Why? She has been a Miss India International, she has walked the ramp for India's top designers, and she has also worked in a commercial with SRK. What else do you want to hear about her experience? Oh, we forgot something! She has been associated with Bollywood ever since she was born. You'll soon find out by the end of the intro. She is also a proud gujju for making an entry in films like many of her contemporaries and like many other gujju's, she offered us some home cooked puri's (a gujarati snack) to eat. Vivek Sharma too grabs a bite and Remo the choreographer has one too. We loved it. But what we all loved was her confidence to grow big in Bollywood, come what may. On the sets of her first film, Kal Kissney Dekha, she is enjoying her new found status with all and sundry. She gives her shot, then wraps herself in a black gown, walks in her van and gets ready to unwrap the bottled water. She welcomes us to her vanity van with a warm smile and as she gets ready for her first ever interview, her mother too walks in. Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel gets you this exclusive interview with the Next Best Thing in Bollywood, Vaishali Desai, and when we shook hands, it was an honour...an honour to be sitting next to Late Shri Manmohan Desai's grandniece. We want to know how you landed up in Bollywood. I am from Bangalore. I've done my schooling and college from Bangalore. I've moved to Mumbai in 2005. I've done by B.A in psychology, wanted to be a psychiatrist but couldn't do so, wanted to pursue my M.B.A but couldn't do so because I started modelling. In 2005, I went for Miss India International. I was in the final ten and went for my pageant in Tokyo. After that, I did some television commercials for Ponds and Tanishq and the latest being Raymonds and Sun Feast with Shah Rukh Khan. I've also done music videos with Pradeep Sarkar for Euphoria. And lastly done fashion shows with India's top designers like Rohit Bal, Ritu Beri and Manish Malhotra and so on. I think that's about it (laughs). I've never been brought up in an environment which talked about films I don't understand why models want to pursue films. Is it lack of money or dissatisfaction? It's neither lack of money nor dissatisfaction. For models, the next step in their life has always been Bollywood. For me, because I've been from a film background, Manmohan Desai is my grand uncle, so may be somewhere that pull was there for me to come into this industry and films is a hobby for me. It's more of a passion. Once you are well accepted in Bollywood, will you still be walking with the tag - Manmohan Desai ji's relative? There are expectations. My entire family has been behind the cameras, right from direction to distribution. I'll be the first one to be in front of the camera (laughs). I don't know if I'll be carrying the tag of Manmohan Desai's grandniece all my life or till I'm here in Bollywood. But I just want to revive my banner back. I want to get MKD back into the picture. Brief us a bit more about your kiddie years spent. Anything you remember of the genius Manmohan Desai? He never liked us calling him 'dada'. So we used to call him 'Big Dad'. Regarding my interaction with him, it was never on films. I used to go to his house and I remember sitting on his 'golden jhula', the golden swing and talk to him. Though I have seen his Amar Akbar Anthony around 50 to 100 times, we never used to talk about his films. I've never been brought up in an environment which talked about films. You must be aware about the fact that Om Shanti Om was kind of a tribute to Late Shri Manmohan Desai ji? Yes I am aware of that fact and happy that he is still being remembered by the film industry. Not that he will ever be forgotten. Big Dad has always been Farah Khan's inspiration and I'm really proud about that. When I did the Sun Feast commercial with Shah Rukh Khan, he came up to me, as he is a thorough gentleman, spoke to me about Big Dad and how Om Shanti Om was a tribute to this great filmmaker. Shah Rukh Khan came up to me and spoke to me about Big Dad and how Om Shanti Om was a tribute to this great filmmaker Let's talk about another thorough gentleman with whom you're working right now, the new comer, Jacky Bhagnani. We hit it off on the first day itself. We are good friends and supportive of each other. We are also good critics to each other. If I am not doing a scene properly, he'll come up to me and tell me and vice versa. Jacky is very hard working, has worked a lot on himself and is passionate about cinema. I can keep talking about Jacky Bhagnani, on and on and on (laughs). Do you think you are in safe hands of Vivek Sharma who is only one film old? Yes I do feel safe with Vivek Sharma. Before I was roped in for Kal Kissney Dekha, I had a lot of offers for films but somehow did not capitalise. Vivekji was the first person I met regarding films and he told me that he will be the person to launch me. Four years down the line I am being launched in a Vivek Sharma film. Now you can call this destiny or 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' (laughs) Are you a proud Gujarati and happy about so many gujju's hitting it big in Bollywood off late? (Laughs) I am so proud of the fact that I am a Gujarati. Of course, I don't speak Gujarati is a different thing but yeah, Prachi Desai, Himesh Reshammiya, myself and you too being a gujarati journalist. Welcome to the elite club of gujju's (laughs). Who has been your inspiration? Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Rekha, Madhubala and my mom. Speaking of mom, do you at all worry about the fact that your mother accompanies you wherever you go? Initially, my mom was apprehensive about accompanying me on the sets but right from my modelling days, I've always wanted my mom to be with me. I wanted her. It's not that mom wanted to be with me wherever I go. Though my mother has seen everything, she is the most disconnected person from films. For me and I'm sure for all, family comes first. It's a personal choice. Where do you go from Kal Kissney Dekha? I have to go on the sets after this (laughs). Seriously speaking, I am looking at a bright future ahead of me. Big films, big directors, big banners, not just the dancing around, good character roles. I am even open to regional films, and why not. If given an opportunity, I will do a Gujarati film too. I know how to read the language (laughs). Any New Year resolutions? When I was young, I used to make resolutions. But I can talk about celebrations. I am going to celebrate New Year on the sets, hopefully or will be with my family. I don't party that much. As I ask all the models, will you go back to the ramp now? Yes, but as a show stopper (laughs). Which director would you like to work with in the near future? Steven Spielberg (laughs) and I am not being diplomatic. I would love to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. You best film excluding all Manmohan Desai films. Veer Zara Favourite actor Shah Rukh Khan. I'd love to work with him in films, now that I've got an experience working with him in a commercial. Favourite actress Madhuri Dixit. You're too fair to become a Bollywood actress? (Laughs) I knew that was coming. Actually, we Indians have a fetish with fair skin. I prefer girls who are dark skinned. I look good but don't have great features. I prefer girls who are dark skinned. I look good but don't have great features. I think I missed on the most important question. What's Kal Kisne Dekha all about? The film is a suspense thriller. It's got comedy, romance and I think after a long time our industry is going to see an out an out college campus film. I wouldn't say the film is different but yes, something to look forward to, with good songs and the USP like Jacky and me (laughs). Any message for your going-to-be-fans? I'd like say - Have a never-say-die-attitude. Think positive. Be positive.

"Aamir re-wrote the entire climax of Ghajini" - Murugadoss

Aamir Khan has just found himself another fan among filmmakers. The soft-spoken and gentle Tamil-Telugu director A.R Murugadoss who has made what is unarguably one of the most violent films of our times, is completely enamored of Aamir's creative faculties. In fact the simple and honest director who has earlier made four highly successful films in Tamil and Telugu openly acknowledges that Aamir re-constructed the entire climax of Ghajini to make it more contemporary and palatable to a cosmopolitan audience. "We didn't make too many changes in the rest of the film. Every time I'd suggest a change in Ghajini from the original, Aamir would firmly cut it down saying we should stick to the Tamil script. But he decided we should rewrite the entire climax. The entire location, incidents and dialogues for the climax were re-written by Aamir. I think the Hindi version is far better than the Tamil Ghajini because of the changes that Aamir made." Whatever Murugadoss makes next (and the offer will crystallize after the year-ending week) he has only one wish. "I want Aamir to be my consultant. Ghajini in Hindi would've been impossible without him. What he did to the climax was amazing. Now whatever I make I want Aamir's guidance. I don't know Hindi at all. But I knew the meaning of the Tamil words and groped my way through the Hindi dialogues in Ghajini. Every time I was stuck on a word or line, I'd call up Aamir. I've learnt so much from him," says the litterateur-turned-filmmaker who has several short-story anthologies in Tamil to his credit. Though many people in Mumbai feel the title role of the villain in Ghajini should have been played by a better-known actor, Murugadoss is happy with Pradeep Rawat. "He is not entirely unknown in Hindi cinema. He played the Sardarji in Lagaan." Murugadoss admits he felt a little out of place in Mumbai initially. "But today a filmmaker is not restricted to any one region. Ghajini has gone so smoothly from Tamil to Hindi. Now I want to take a break, visit my native town Kallakurichi near Chennai and come back to sign my second Hindi film." Next Murugadoss wants to direct a totally non-violent film in Hindi. "My next Hindi film will be an out-and-out love story. There won't be even a slap in the narrative. I've acquired the reputation of being a violent director. But apart from Ghajini all my films are soft and gentle."

Faces 2008: A look at the talents who took their first step in Bollywood this year

2008 was a year of great variety among debutants. Two of the brightest female faces of 2008, Asin and Anushka Sharma came within two weeks of each other. If Asin in Ghajini was an expressions ki dukaan, Anushka Sharma in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was far more controlled and reined -in. This model from Bangalore was in no hurry to let us know all the tricks of her trade in one go. Aram se was Anushka. Asin was a storehouse of expressions, a Sridevi on steroids. And a month earlier we had Mugdha Godse, yet another new feminine flavour for 2008 who made a blasting impact. Bold and uninhibited, she stood her ground in Fashion in spite of an author-backed part for Priyanka Chopra. A fourth fabulous female debutante came earlier during the year. Prachi Desai with her sweet and tender big-screen debut in Rock On proved television stars do shine in cinema. The myth that television actors falter and fall while making that transition (look at poor Amarr Upadhyay, he is back on television after trying everything on the big screen from horror to Bhojpuri) was broken twice over in 2008. Not just Prachi. But also Rajeev Khandelwal who made a powerful debut in Aamir along with director Rajkumar Gupta who emblazoned his name with a tale of terrorism that traveled the tormented streets of Mumbai in scampering motions. If Aamir gave us a camera-worthy director in Rajkumar Gupta, two other directors dabbling in terrorism - Nishikant Kamat in Mumbai Meri Jaan and Neeraj Pandey in A Wednesday - came out with flying colours. Indeed 2008 was the year of demoniacal directorial impact. Abhishek Kapoor who had once acted in a film titled Uff Yeh Mohabbat with his then-girlfriend Twinkle Kapadia in the lead was resurrected as the man behind Rock On. For all practical purposes this was Abhishek's beginning as a director and what a debut! Ditto Munnabhai writer turned director Abbas Tyrewala, who shone in meteoric motions in the inspiring company of his debut making hero Imran Khan in Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na. The debutant directors who came during the earlier part of the year like Vijay Krishna Acharya (Tashan), Jaideep Sen (Krazzy 4) and Vivek Sharma (Bhoothnath) couldn't live up to the hype created around their debut. But actor Imran Khan did. He was hands-down the male discovery of the year. Sassy, spontaneous, practical and sensible, Imran's freshness of approach to acting was contagious. The nation contracted the Imran virus. Harman Baweja who made his debut on the same day as Imran was far filmier. Like Asin, he knows it all. And doesn't hide it. Farhan Akhtar the first super-director to make his super-debut as a leading man was a revelation in Rock On. Subtle and skilful in portraying a man who has clamped shut his dreams, Farhan made us thankful for the concept of multi-tasking which allowed him casual leeway to switch from one side of the camera to the other. Rock On also gave us a significant female talent in Shahana Goswami who sort of negated the advantage she gained in her debut with a turnip called Ru BaRu. Earlier during the year there were some not-so-significant male debutants, like Nikhil Dwivedi at the beginning of the year in My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves. If Imran had Aamir's backing, Nikhil had the label of being Shah Rukh's protege. Rajneesh Duggal and Adah Sharma made a joint effort at stardom in Vikram Bhatt's 1920 which did more for the sales of Hanuman Chalisa than for the newcomers. Neha Uberoi and Sikandar Kher in Woodstock Villa and Nakuul Mehta-Amita Mangat-Adhyayan Suman in Haal-E-Dil came and went faster than we could remember their names. Mithun's son Mimoh Chakraborty made a disastrous debut too. But Sonal Chauhan in Jannat and Aditi Sharma in Black & White managed to scrape through the finish line in a well-written role that was badly played. All the really promising new talent of the year came in the second-half of the year. Maybe it was meant to be. Maybe it was planned. Because all the popular awards generally go to films and actors in the second -half.

Priyanka Chopra on 'Oye! It's Friday!'

The year 2008 was indeed the year of surprises galore. It not just saw TV actors turning to silver screen, but also the vice versa. One such 'rocking' example is that of Farhan Akhtar, who, after having conquered the silver screen is now busy capturing eye balls on the 'idiot box' with his latest show 'Oye! It's Friday!' that gets aired on NDTV Imagine. After having set the show afire with the likes of Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan, Mugdha Godse and gang, Farhan ushers in the New Year-2009 with none other than Bollywood's very own desi girl Priyanka Chopra! And the irony of the show happens to be the fact that it was Farhan who had directed Priyanka in the super hit film Don 2. A sneak-peak in this episode revealed that Priyanka truthfully revealed some interesting secrets and a rarely-revealed side to her personality. News also has it that it were the hoards of PJs to hilarious anecdotes by Farhan and Priyanka that has the studio audience in splits. In this same episode, Priyanka also got nostalgic and spoke about her early childhood days in India to studying in the US. Not just that, she spoke about her transformation from being the bullying older sister to a no-nonsense teen. Tarun to make 'Dostana 2'?

Sequels are in! Is Tarun Mansukhani making a sequel to the immensely likable DOSTANA? That's the buzz in the industry. "Not a bad idea," Tarun smiles, "But the truth is, I haven't decided anything yet. I don't have an inkling of what to make next. But I hope to start working on my next film within a fortnight." By the time you're reading this, Tarun must've flown to the U.S.; he's the line producer of his mentor Karan Johar's MY NAME IS KHAN. Talking of the DOSTANA sequel, Tarun says that a lot of people have asked him about it. "It would be a great idea to take the Abhishek - John story forward. But the sequel has to be better than the first part," he adds. Tarun is simultaneously involved with the animation version of KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI. Incidentally, Tarun had joined Karan as an apprentice when he started KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and the talented director must be reliving the moments all over again. "I owe everything to Karan. He's family for me. I can never think of branching out of Dharma Productions. Never!" he gets emotional as he says this.

'London Dreams' on Independence Day

Click above for more stills Till some time back, most producers used to time their releases around the two major festivals -- Diwali and Idd. Then Christmas and Valentine's Day celebrations were included. Later, Republic Day [26th January] and now Independence Day [15th August] holidays are also being eyed by producers and distributors. Last year, Vipul Shah released his ambitious venture SINGH IS KINNG on 8th August, a week before the Independence Day. This year, he is targeting the Independence Day weekend for his next mega venture LONDON DREAMS. The film is confirmed for 14th August release. While on Vipul Shah, a section of the media has reported that Ranbir Kapoor has refused to star in his next venture. "A section of the media loves to make stories and the worst part is, they don't even have the courtesy to clarify whether it's true or false. As for my next venture, it's with Akshay Kumar and not Ranbir Kapoor. I haven't approached Ranbir in the first place and I'm sure, even he wouldn't agree to star in a film that has Akshay enacting the main lead," Vipul states. Point noted!

Ghajini breaks convention, even on the Web

This year's best kept secret just upped the suspense quotient on the web! The makers of Ghajini are capitalizing the potential of the web along with Hungama to create maximum visibility for the film. Hungama, the largest aggregator, developer and publisher of Indian entertainment content globally, has created a innovative website www.rememberghajini.com. However, in addition to this website are the two virals: www.findghajini.com and www.wallofsuspects.com that grip the user and give him an experience like the movie, over the Internet. The official website of the movie is one of a kind. For the first time, a movie website does not talk about the movie. That's right! The website maintains the suspense of this movie and does not provide a synopsis, while keeping the user engaged in a multitude of videos and images. What even further differentiates the website is that true to the theme of the film, the website refreshes itself every fifteen minutes. No matter which section the user is accessing, every fifteen minutes you are driven back to the homepage. To support it, there is a timer that runs at the bottom of each page. The producers of Ghajini and Hungama believe this initiative has all the elements that will attract the online audiences to the theatres. Exclusive videos of Aamir Khan have been shot and used for the viral www.findghajini.com. In this viral application, the user plays the role of Sanjay Singhania (character played by Aamir Khan) and tries to find 'Ghajini' through the clues provided. After the user finds a clue, he/ she is given a hint about where one might find the next one. After one finds all the clues, the user needs to dial a phone number on which one can hear Aamir Khan talking to them. Commenting on the new route explored for Ghajini, Madhu Mantena, producer of Ghajini says, "Ghajini is a film with tremendous potential, and therefore we felt we owed it to the film to invest time and creativity in the marketing program. We strongly believe in giving each and every film the maximum attention possible to create a space in the audience's minds that merely does not create awareness but instead goes a step further to ensure a 'buy-in' to the film by creating a sense of anticipation and excitement. To achieve this thrust, promoting the movie online was extremely important. And it is for all to see that the website has fabulously brought forth the interesting elements of the film, giving viewers a complete experience of the film without revealing the plot and simultaneously engaging the viewer." Hungama has integrated elements in all the three initiatives. In the viral www.wallofsuspects.com, users can upload their own photograph or that of their friends, much like the Aamir Khan's wall of suspects in the film. Once they have done so, they receive a code which is required to view the entire wall of suspects. What does this wall have? Find out yourself at www.rememberghajini.com.
