Wondering how he could possibly follow that up? By shaving his head, spirit-gumming on a goatee and playing a cop with loose morals in an international espionage thriller, natch! The first teaser trailer for From Paris With Love, which also stars Hugo Boss pitchman Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, is about as ludicrous as one would expect for a film produced and co-written by the endearingly schlocky Luc Besson. Unfortunately for fans of the action genre, it looks as if Besson used up most of his interesting ideas about how best to blow up cars in the Transporter series. But fans of camp will likely take great delight in seeing Travolta attempt to butch it up a bit, all the while looking like an unholy cross between Mr. Clean and Marsellus Wallace. And whatever you do, be sure to stick around for the end of the video when Travolta spouts the trailer-friendly catchphrase "Welcome to Paris, baby!" in his finest Sweathoggian accent. Of course, this is nothing new: Gwen Stefani is always sporting her L.A.M.B. goods, SJP pairs her Bitten with Loubs, and LiLo practically lives in her self-esteem-boosting leggings. Nevertheless, it's fun for a mindless click-through: Remember when Katie Holmes tried to make her own clothes? Or how strangely cheap J.Lo looked when she wore a Sweetface dress? Ahhh.... cappella. Perhaps no other form of organized performance gets my bile flap in a tizzy like a cappella, the finger-snapping, musical college equivalent of an IRS audit. The college I went to had a slew of singing groups to choose from, and it seemed that even though I never attended any of their concerts by choice, I was still subjected to their harmonizing ways at various events. There I would be, lured into our student center by a table of free snacks, and just as my arms were as laden with as many Entenmann's as a lady could handle, I would hear it: A small Asian girl in the opening throes of "No More 'I Love You's'"; or a group of Christian singers dealing Jesus perhaps the most sinful of blows: A slightly flat version of "Your Love Is Liftin' Me Higher." Within seconds, there was a powdered sugar outline where my body once stood as my legs road-runnered it to the door (pastries in hand, of course).
My theory about a cappella is as follows: They sound passable when singing together as a group, but as individual singers are mediocre. (This theory, of course, does not apply to Rockapella, the narrative singers from Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? They were geniuses.) And the worst part is? All a cappella singers are so cocky about having good voices, even though most of them don't! Andy Bernard on The Office is a great (written) example of this baffling phenomenon.
I tell you all this as a precursor to the following admission (dignity swallow): The following video may be the first a cappella performance I actually (shudder) enjoyed. A group of guys at Indiana University got together with a reimagining of "The 12 Days of Christmas", and you know what? IT WAS PRETTY ENTERTAINING, OK?? There, I said it! And I don't care what you think!
I FINALLY LIKED AN A CAPPELLA PERFORMANCE (sobbing):

With torture porn no longer the surefire draw that it once was and moviegoers increasingly poor and unwilling to leave their homes, what are the producers of low-budget horror films to do? Where is the next frontier in cinematically coerced pants-shitting? Since they're already heavily invested in it, Lionsgate is hoping it's 3-D! The Times reports this morning on the studio's My Bloody Valentine 3D, the first three-dimensional horror movie to get a theatrical release in the U.S. in more than 20 years, which will play on 900 specially equipped screens on January 16. The film follows a group of survivors fleeing from a pickax-wielding maniac, though Lionsgate insists the 3-D effects will be used only to "enhance the story" and not as a gimmick (having seen the pickax-throwing trailer ourselves, we are dubious). Even so, the only way we can imagine this not being a huge success is if the people on the left-hand side of the above publicity photo sue Lionsgate for burning their faces off.

You'd have to be an idiot not to have seen this one coming: George Lucas, beloved director and ever-watchful protector of the Star Wars brand, has officially given his blessing to Star Wars: A Musical Journey, a stage production featuring dancing Stormtroopers and singing Wookies, according to E! Online. The show will play London's O2 arena next April with a European tour supposedly in the works. There's currently no word on a Broadway run, but, given the available theater space and the recession-proof appeal of completely ridiculous nonsense (admittedly, we would probably pay money to see this), you'd have to expect that one is definitely inevitable. SW: AMJ will reportedly condense the boring, convoluted plots of all six Star Wars movies down into a snappy, concise two hours, which actually makes us think that it could be sort of good, provided they focus primarily on the two non-shitty ones.
Would you believe that something like this has actually been attempted before? It's true! Talented super-nerd Timothy Edward Smith wrote a Star Wars musical in 1999 and posted MP3s of all the songs on his official Website — which, of course, has inspired tons of insane YouTube tribute videos like this one:

Here's some Christmas cheer to get you feeling all warm and tingly: Vicky Beckham's line of frocks is the light at the end of the economic fashion tunnel. Yes, turns out, our Posh has a winner on her hands, as we reported earlier. Bergdorf Goodman sold out of nearly half the stock in just a week, and Selfridges sold out within minutes. And now Neiman Marcus is getting in on the action, having snapped up the collection, to be sold there in February.
All this without any major advertising except a video. Of course, the best marketing is Victoria herself, as she's been spotted around Milan in not one but three of her own designs, including while out with Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce.
Say what you will about celebrity designers (and we will say plenty), but it seems we finally have a success story on our hands. Now we wait for the H&M/Target/Topshop line to come out.

The weeks between Christmas and New Year's are crucial for charities — the guilt and goodwill in the air means it's a particularly ripe time to solicit donations. But not this year. In the wake of a large number of nonprofits being wiped out after investing with Bernard Madoff, donors are being a lot more careful. Bill White, who runs New York–based charities the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, told the Journal that one client who was considering making a gift to the museum wanted to know exactly who they would invest the money with, much to his surprise. "We've had lots of people in the past say what we can use the money for and can't use the money for," he told the paper. "But we have never ever had anybody ask us what we are investing the money in."
Meanwhile, over at Yeshiva University, which lost $110 million to Madoff, students in a seminar attended by the Times were feeling betrayed:
In the eyes of the students, Bernard L. Madoff had deceived scores of people, turned billions of dollars into dust and ruined many lives. So instead, the graduate seminar of 15 began by debating whether Mr. Madoff’s actions were sins, and whether it mattered that he was Jewish...Some said Mr. Madoff’s religious affiliation was irrelevant; others worried that his Judaism might tarnish their own, that outside eyes would not be able to see past his faith.
Aw. Don't worry, guys. It doesn't matter that he's Jewish. If there's one thing we know so far about Madoff it's that he was, pretty clearly, an equal-opportunity offender. After all, he ruined the holidays for everyone in the world. That counts for something.

Source: CNN.com - Entertainment | 23 Dec 2008 | 2:04 pmIn the End, Clinton’s Secretary of State Gig Only Cost Her $13 Million
It's got to be maddening to be Hillary Clinton this holiday season. It was bad enough that she lost the primary she assumed she was going to win earlier in the year, but then her campaign was left in the hole for a huge chunk of cash because it took her so long to shake off that assumption. Today the Times tells us that Clinton just officially forgave $13 million of debt that she lent to the campaign out of her own pocket. (It still owes $5 million to Mark Penn, and it's got to sting to pay that guy now.) This is especially bothersome now that her husband can't accept money from all those Arabs anymore. But there's a bright side! She's going to be secretary of State! Nobody can steal that thunder, right?
Wrong! Only a few family names in American politics trump "Clinton" when it comes to public fascination, and the most prominent of them is "Kennedy." The Times and her New York constituents are riveted by Caroline Kennedy's return to politics, and Hillary is just an afterthought again. Even though it's her seat Kennedy is gunning for. People are even talking about Kennedy becoming the first female president of the United States one day! It's just not fair. Kennedy even, in the ultimate insult, also wears pearls and pantsuits.
But don't count Clinton out yet, oh no. She's got plans. She's going to extend the powers of the State Department. She wants a bigger budget, and economic powers, too. And she's amassing a team of envoys and deputies already. And she's creating positions that the Bush Administration didn't even use. And she's going to take over relations with India and China! And she's got an all-star roster! And you, and you, and you — you're gonna love her.

When last we checked in on the Screen Actors Guild, its leadership was hurtling toward a strike-authorization vote that, if successful, would immobilize Hollywood, put millions more out of work during a recession, wreck the Oscars, and possibly scuttle 2010's entire planned slate of film releases (but maybe get actors a slightly higher royalty rate for Internet work!) — so how's that all going? Not so great! Owing to growing dissent among its own members (plus this hilarious photo illustration of Tina Fey we keep using, we bet), SAG leaders announced last night that they're delaying the vote for two weeks (until January 13) in the hopes that more of their members might join the cause. "This will provide us with more time to conduct member education and outreach on the referendum before the balloting," said SAG national executive director Doug Allen, the world's most optimistic person. Maybe Hollywood's not doomed after all!

Lately, it seems like everywhere you turn, someone is crowing that they saw the current financial crisis coming. George Soros. John Paulson. Steve Eisman. Armando Falcon. There are so many of them, you wonder who didn't see it coming. The answer is, well, most people. After the jump, have a look back at some of the stocks chosen in the annual investment guides of some leading publications (including, alas, this one) as smart buys in 2008.
Jon Birger, senior writer, Fortune’s Investors Guide 2008
What he said then: “Question: What do you call it when an $8 billion asset write-down translates into a $30 billion loss in market cap? Answer: an overreaction … Smart investors should buy [Merrill Lynch] stock before everyone else comes to their senses.”
What we know now: Merrill agreed to sell itself Bank of America to avoid a Lehman-like flameout in a deal closing in January. Meanwhile, Merrill's shares plummeted 77 percent.
Elaine Garzarelli, president of Garzarelli Capital, in Business Week's Investment Outlook 2008
What she said then: “Garzarelli is advising investors to buy some of the most beaten-down stocks, including those of giant financial institutions such as Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, and Merrill Lynch. What would cause her to turn bearish? Not much. ‘Our indicators are extremely bullish.’”
What we know now: As of January 1, none of these firms will still exist. Lehman went bankrupt. JPMorgan and Chase bought Bear Stearns in a fire sale. We all know Merrill’s fate.
Sarah Ketterer, CEO of Causeway Capital Management in Fortune’s Investors Guide 2008
What she said then: Q: “Sarah, where to you see value?” A: “There are [financial firms] that have been tainted by this huge credit problem … Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have been pummeled. Our stress-test analysis indicates those stocks are at bargain basement prices.”
What we know now: The federal government placed these two lenders under “conservatorship” in September. By then, shares of Fannie and Freddie had lost 90 percent of their value.
Jon Birger, senior writer, in Fortune’s Investors Guide 2008
What he said then: “CEO Jeffrey Immelt has been leading a successful makeover at General Electric, though you wouldn't know it from GE’s flaccid stock price. Our bet is that in a stormy market investors will gravitate toward the ultimate blue chip.”
What we know now: GE’s stock price has tumbled 55 percent percent this year and it’s on the verge of losing its triple-A credit rating. Analysts are nervous about its financial-services division, which provides about half of GE’s earnings.
Archie MacAllaster, chairman of MacAllaster Pitfield MacKay in Barron’s 2008 Roundtable
What he said then:“A lot of people think Bank of America will cut its dividend, but I don't think there's a chance in the world. I think they'll raise it this year; they have raised it a little in each of the past 20 to 25 years. My target price for the stock is $55.”
What we know now: BofA may not have gone the way of Lehman. But investors who sold when MacAllaster told them to buy were shrewd. The bank’s share price now hovers around $14, and it has slashed its dividend in half.
One of our own: James J. Cramer, contributing editor, in his "Future of Business" column in New York Magazine
What he said then: "Goldman Sachs makes more money than every other brokerage firm in New York combined and finishes the year at $300 a share. Not a prediction — an inevitability.”
What we know now: In mid-December, Goldman Sachs’ share price was $78. The firm also announced a $2.2 billion quarterly loss, its first since going public nine years ago.Read more posts by Daily Intel

Oh, jet-setters.Are you still in New York? No, really: We want to know. And Kate Moss, who is headed to Thailand for seven days with boyfriend Jamie Hince and daughter Lila Grace. The trio plans to stay at a medical spa, where we can only imagine the fancy Thai treatments they've already booked. But don't they know what they're missing here? Perhaps 13-degree weather and deathly wind chills don't appeal to Peaches and Kate, but to a tough crop of people we like to call New Yorkers, it's home. At least, that's what we keep telling ourselves, since we're pretty much the only ones left here.

Dolce & Gabbana elves!Way back in September, Dolce & Gabbana launched its own online magazine, Swide; since then, it's been quietly floating under the radar — until now. It's all kinds of quirky, especially the blog called Behind the Seams, full of jokes about Botox and forgoing desserts that speak to every kind of fashion stereotype. For all we know, it could be written by an Italian publicist who's projecting. It's updated daily, and a recent post on Milan features Victoria Beckham when she made an appearance with the designer duo last week. And to top it off, today Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana posted video of their heads on elf bodies singing Christmas carols — we admit, we cracked a smile. Now if only all designers were technologically inclined enough to get down as elves, it'd be quite the merry holiday.

Paris, who was out with friends in Los Angeles when the theft took place, told Life and Style Weekly magazine: "I am devastated. I cannot believe someone broke into my home. They took items that had such sentimental value that no one will ever be able to replace. I'm just thankful that I wasn't there when it happened."

A source said: "Paris has upped her security team to three 24-hour bodyguards, and she has someone on her property at all times. Detectives are doing a huge investigation into the theft."
