Are Newspapers Doomed?

Ponca City, We love you writes "James Surowiecki has an interesting article in the New Yorker that crystalizes the problems facing print newspapers today and explains why we may soon be seeing more major newspapers filing for bankruptcy, as the Tribune Company did last week. 'There's no mystery as to the source of all the trouble: advertising revenue has dried up,' writes Surowiecki, but the 'peculiar fact about the current crisis is that even as big papers have become less profitable they've arguably become more popular,' with the blogosphere piggybacking on traditional journalism's content. Surowiecki imagines many possible futures for newspapers, from becoming foundation-run nonprofits to relying on reader donations to deep-pocketed patrons. 'For a while now, readers have had the best of both worlds: all the benefits of the old, high-profit regime — intensive reporting, experienced editors, and so on — and the low costs of the new one. But that situation can't last. Soon enough, we're going to start getting what we pay for, and we may find out just how little that is.'"

Boom in music video games helps original artists (AP)

As the music industry struggles to cope with falling compact disc sales, the music video games are inspiring homebodies to get up and play guitar, drums, and sing along, helping revive interest in music and providing a lift to sales amid a broad market decline. (AP Photo/Richard Vogel)AP - "This song is dedicated to Debbie Harry," flinty-eyed Lisa Hsuan purrs into a microphone on the red-lit stage of Hyperion Tavern. It's a cozy dive where patrons drink Coke and beer from bottles and a fading chandelier dangles overhead.

Fear Kills Businesses, Dead

It’s official. We’re in a recession. Recessions naturally inject fear and panic, which is only heightened by every discussion of market losses, layoffs, bailouts, and somber predictions. We’re only human after all; of course everything affects us personally and emotionally.

Fear is not a catalyst for productivity however.

With valuable advice pouring in from concerned and sympathetic entrepreneurs and proven leaders, businesses are indeed responding quickly to make decisions that equate to a secure and prosperous future—hopefully.

This constructive advice has helped businesses focus and weigh difficult decisions sooner than they might have without it.

However, over time, productive guidance has mutated into a glut of negative forecasts and grim predictions that pillage precious and vital airtime from contributing to the resolution of our financial predicament. Simply said, fear, and the dissemination of distress, slowly erodes hope, vision, and ambition, ultimately killing businesses instead of guiding them.

Fear inspires desperate actions. Hope (combined with clarity and inventiveness galvanizes action and engenders opportunities.

Opportunity vs. Emotion

These are emotionally charged times which only fuel emotionally-driven decisions. Unfortunately, the advice shared from many experts now and in the past is subjected to both literal and open interpretation, and thus guiding or misguiding the next steps of established businesses and emerging startups.

Don’t worry about getting ahead, instead, just survive…Cutting deeper and quicker is the formula to survive. - Sequoia Capital

There’s a distinct difference between mere survival and succeeding in real world business.  Many companies may unwittingly lock themselves in an isolated panic room instead of taking strategic steps to evolve and grow the business opportunity that exists today.

General advice is just that, general. One prevailing set of strategies and recommendations doesn’t apply to all.

In a conversation with veteran CEO and financier Steve Larsen, currently co-founder of Krugle, he advises:

Of course, don’t be stupid. Have enough cash to run your business, but I think the doom and gloom crowd are getting too much airtime. Look for opportunities. Difficult times are when they’ll most likely occur. When we’re at ‘steady state’ and things are normal, good opportunities are much harder to find with GREAT opportunities nearly impossible. It is during periods of tumult and transition when you can spot things that lead to the greatest returns—if you are alert. So be alert.

In every recession, abundant opportunities are inherently rife. To simply believe that this is a generic time to step off of the playing field to warm benches or take a seat in the spectator bleachers in the hopes of emerging once again to readily have a shot at winning the game is illogical. Businesses, and customers, do not stop making decisions—they’re just more discerning during volatile economic climates. But make no mistake, if you choose to stop vying for customer attention, the world will move ahead without you.

This is your time to vault in front of your competition, to earn rapid and sweeping visibility, for a fraction of the time and money that was required to excel during the “good days.”

Your rivals are retreating right now, so what are you going to do about it?

Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu advised in The Art of War:

When weak, feign strength…Attack him [your enemy] where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

Whoever inspires you, remember, tomorrow’s leaders are born, tested, and proven, today. This is your moment.

Development vs. Revenue Generation

As a startup, you are now, officially, on your own. You can’t count on your VCs saving you or some magical offer from Yahoo or Google showing up to bail you out. — Jason Calacanis

If your company is guided by a board of advisors or group of investors that are not actively in tune with the real world opportunities and hurdles of your business, then their advice and direction may be questionable. Either they’re investing in the development of a product/service or they’re investing in the development of a commercial business or acquisition opportunity.

Depending on goals and milestones, there’s a stark difference in not only how the company is run, but also how its leaders assess and implement critical cost-cutting measures or where additional investment may be required. And, if users or customers are involved, the process of cost cutting isn’t necessarily a sweeping solution.

If resources are dedicated to research and development, assess the state of progress coupled with the runway of current cash and expectations. The key question is, “how can you get from here to there with less than what you’ve already been spending or planned on spending this year?”

For those companies who rely on customers to market products and either hit profitability or simply attain proof of concept through adoption, customers are not expendable. Cutting or freezing any program that connects your solution to your customers is dangerous and requires careful consideration. This IS the time when businesses must invest in the transcendence from survival to market leadership. This recession is temporary, but business is constant.

Do Not eliminate marketing or sales efforts. Okay, I’m biased here, but cutting marketing and sales has a direct and reverberating impact on future income, so don’t be surprised if next quarter’s numbers are down. Without support, sales will continue to trend downward.

Be wise as you evaluate your sales and marketing efforts. With the right team, you may want to consider maintaining or increasing financial support in order to excel while your competition retreats.

Do create an innovative and cost efficient formula for running a concentrated, sustained, and proactive outbound marketing program that effectively creates a bridge between your core customer’s needs and your product.

While companies are cutting costs to extend their runways, consumers and businesses are reducing spending in parallel. However, it’s important to remember that customers are not freezing spending altogether. They are and will continue to research, invest and procure the solutions, services, and products that will help them succeed, offer entertainment, or streamline aspects of their day-to-day workflow. And, they’ll also continue to make impulse decisions just for the hell of it.

Building Your Business in a Recession

Obviously, capital preservation and cost cutting do not equate to sustenance or growth. The driving factors are poles apart when striving to merely stay alive vs. building a business.

If you’re sheltering cash to focus on development, then cut the services and expenses that will not impede your ability to cross the threshold to market success. If you’re conserving funds to prolong life, then realize that the only fountain of youth is cash itself. Focusing energies on generating revenue, increasing visibility, and enhancing customer loyalty are the most effective strategies for underwriting longevity, and hopefully growth, especially during an economic downturn.

The real question you have to ask yourself is, “How will my customers find me today and tomorrow?”

I’m not sure if this is a newsflash or not, but customers do not typically go out of their way to “discover” your products and companies. They have choices and it’s the job of any marketing and sales-centric business to reach their customers where they go for information—otherwise, they’re out of the decision making process by default. Marketing and sales are the conduits for connecting prospects to your business.

In a down economy, tomorrow’s leaders are born today. It takes vision, focus, and a hyper-connected sense of what customers are seeking, why, and where.

The reality is that there are hard costs tied to customer acquisition and retention. The key is to observe and listen to your customers to ascertain the most active and direct channels to reach and engage them.

Here are several, targeted and affordable suggestions:

1. SEO – Customers actively use search engines to find relevant solutions. Keyword and organic search optimization is an inexpensive and effective means for gaining strategic presence.

2. Blog Relations – It’s not just about news and pitching the A-List, creating a consistent and visible brand requires the inclusion of the authoritative, peer-to-peer blogs that your customers and influencers read for information, help and perspective. Oh, and be wise about using embargoes.

3. Media/Analysts – Reporters and analysts cover your space and by simply writing about your company or product, they can position you as an option among your customers; especially when they’re researching options to validate decisions.

4. Direct Sales – Some of the most successful companies right now are concentrating on direct outreach to the decision makers instead of hoping to influence them from the sidelines.

5. CRM – Building a customer-focused business saves money and increases revenue. Focusing on customers and empowering them improves business processes, product development, and also offsets marketing expenses as “involved and participatory” customers transform from a cost-center into an active surrogate sales force.

6. Participate – Social networks are much more than mere time killers. Participating across the social communities where you’re customers and prospects are active and vocal provides a looking glass into their thoughts, requests, opinions, dislikes, and recommendations. It also provides you with priceless opportunities to combat negative perceptions while also positioning your company as a resource.

7. Thought Leadership – One of the best ways to demonstrate thought leadership is to actively share your thoughts where they count. Contributing articles and posts to industry publications, forums, and blogs increases visibility and unobtrusively contributes to your sales strategy by helping customers find you.

8. Blog and Blog Comments – It may seem trite or perhaps even worthless, but I can guarantee that finding the time to host and contribute to a blog that demonstrates the expertise of you and your team is priceless. People are looking for information and direction, not just from your blog but others as well. Go where they are and offer counsel, contribute to the dialogue and establish trust and authority in the process. Why wouldn’t you position yourself as a resource for your customers or prospects? Too busy you say? Empower your staff. Contract outside experts to contribute to creating a one-stop-shop for insight and direction—just be transparent about their involvement. It costs less than you think to build a community around your product, or at least what it stands for.

9. Network in the real world – Participation isn’t solely relegated to online networks. Opportunities to meet and cultivate relationships in the real world are abundant. Meetups, industry events, groups, unofficial lobbycons associated with your favorite events are continuous and more valuable with your involvement.

10. Involve Your Community – Save money and time by involving your customers in the development process of your new and iterative products as well as your go to market strategy. Alpha customers are often ready to assist with the validation of your business model and also the honest feedback associated with your product benefits and features.

11. Websites are not Just Web Pages – Your Website must make an emotional connection with visitors, while also conveying stories and value propositions that specifically capture the attention of your customers – otherwise, all of your hard work and investment of time and money in sales and marketing campaigns will generate traffic, but lead to a dramatically reduced conversation ratios.

12. Innovate – Always learn and improve everything in order to stay relevant.

Buy When No One Is Buying

If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it, is the surest path to obsolescence. Equally, swinging the axe without accuracy and grace will also send you packing. Constraint forces and inspires creativity. Operate not from fear, but from vision, determination, and ingenuity.

In a down market, generally speaking, this is the time to strategically cut dispensable expenses, but also invest in growth. It may appear as common practice, however, current actions demonstrate counter intuitiveness. You sell when people are buying, not when people are selling. You buy when no one is buying, not when everyone is frantically bidding the price up. These are indeed the times to invest in the success of your business and your personal brand.

Remember, the economy is a yo-yo on an escalator. It might go up and down, and down some more, but eventually, it’s always going up (once we fix it, this time).

Any company that intentionally pulls itself from the radar screens of potential and existing customers will find itself on a direct path to the Deadpool.

It is during these most difficult times when character is truly tested and defined.

To paraphrase Al Pacino from Any Given Sunday, the inches we need to be successful right now are everywhere, and it’s up to us, and only us, to fight for them. And when we add up those inches, it will make the difference between winning and losing. Find and keep the people who will fight for those inches with you. That’s a team. Either you win as a team or you all lose as individuals.  But fear will not help you win at all.

Ukrainian Teen Serial Killer Gang Document Their Crimes on Cellphone Video

I'm not convinced this isn't a hoax or viral marketing campaign, since "strange news blackout" can also mean "didn't actually happen." Even if it's fictional internet lore, it's notable as such. (Appears to be real). An anonymous friend of BB says,
There seems to be a strange news blackout around the horrifying story of the "Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs", three Ukranian teens who apparently recently performed a series of staggeringly violent serial killings and recorded them on cellphone video and then attended the victims' funerals. Supposedly this is some of the first actual video of this kind of crime that has made it into the wild of the internet - the perspective of the deranged killer.

If you Google-news "Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs," little if anything comes up, but the video and story is all over the gore/shock sites, putting them ahead of the news organizations here in the US.

I can't watch the video, and only came across the story by cruising Encyclopedia Dramatica for teh (non-violent, tsk-tsking) lulz, but I glimpsed some stills and felt a little more heartsick about humankind because of it.

Purported Translation of cellphone video dialogue. See also dnepropetrovskmaniacs.com. [warning: links include graphic violence]. Link to video of teens in Ukranian court [does not include video footage of the attacks, thanks leriseux]

A NOTE FROM THE MODERATOR: I don't want to see any more comments from people who read Xeni's description, watched the video anyway, and are complaining about how horrifying it is. Yes! It's horrifying! If you don't want to see that, don't watch the video. Furthermore, those of you who feel that stuff like this should not be given attention are hereby invited to (1.) not watch the video, and (2.) not post comments about it, either. (Ignoring: ur doin it rong.) Thank you.

p.s.: There's a large stash of unicorn chasers further down the thread. Use as needed.

UPDATE: An anonymous commenter in the discussion thread for this post writes:
Hello all. I am from Ukraine, I live in Kiev, but at that time i worked with a girl whose family lived in the same entrance of the multistoried building as one of those teenagers. I remember the horror when she was speaking about what was going on and the shock when she knew it was her neighbor. What we know from the news is... they were 3. One of them was likely an initiator (his surname was Supruniuk) and second one supported him. The third one was kinda acting under the pressure. Nobody knows what moved them, because they rarely robbed. They just liked to kill, those who were weaker than they. It is totally sick, totally criminal. Some newspapers wrote that they might have been under the cover of the dad of this Supruniuk...that he kinda was selling those videos online. N tht he was trying to hide the evindece (smb threw mobile phones in the lavatory)... Some say that they got more pending crimes imposed upon them by police. They are very calm during interrogation, etc. Their parents can not believe. In the phone of one of them police found some nazi images... What can i say... I dont want to ever watch anything about that or know anything more than i know. Their souls are sick. May God do something to that.. Regards, Margaret

Mac Mini "leak" causes excitement, ennui

new_mac_mini-520x390.jpg

Macenstein receives a pic from an anonymous sauce, and the internet goes OMG. Then someone points out the problem: why would a Mac Mini have a lid? Why would it be made of MacBook?

To my mind, the marketing line is unappealing ("World's smallest potato") and lacks Apple's characteristic wordplay. 9to5mac reader Sverkel does a prettier photoshop using the same source material.

There needs to be a new word for the state of disappointment brought on by image manipulation. I propose photoshopathy.

How To See In 3D On Your iPhone

waderoush writes "Some of the coolest media technologies predate the Web and the PC — in fact, they predate the 20th century. My column in Xconomy explores the world of 19th-century stereoscopes and stereo views, which are the all-but-forgotten forerunners to anaglyphic 3D, VR goggles, and other modern stereo vision systems. As it turns out, it's pretty easy to 'free-view' vintage stereo images on an iPhone or other small screen, getting the full 3-D effect without any other viewing aids. The article has instructions for accessing a collection of old stereo images using the new Seadragon Mobile iPhone app from Microsoft Live Labs." The stereoscope, that killer technology of the last century but one, was invented in 1859 by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., who gave it away and never made a dime off it. If you don't have an iPhone and want to get the feel of free viewing on a computer monitor, start here at Roush's Flickr photostream.

Diskeeper Accused of Scientology Indoctrination

touretzky writes "Two ex-employees have sued Diskeeper Corporation in Los Angeles Superior Court after being fired, alleging that the company makes Scientology training a mandatory condition of employment (complaint, PDF). Diskeeper founder and CEO Craig Jensen is a high level, publicly avowed Scientologist who has given millions to his Church. Diskeeper's surprising response to the lawsuit (PDF) appears to be that religious instruction in a place of employment is protected by the First Amendment." The blogger at RealityBasedCommunity.net believes that the legal mechanism that Diskeeper is using to advance this argument ("motion to strike") is inappropriate and will be disallowed, but that the company will eventually be permitted to present its novel legal theory.

Scientists Hack Cellphone To Detect Diseases

Dave Bullock (eecue) plugs his piece up at Wired on a cellphone modded into a portable blood tester. This could become a significant piece of medical technology. "A new MacGyver-esque cellphone hack could bring cheap, on-the-spot disease detection to even the most remote villages on the planet. Using only an LED, plastic light filter, and some wires, scientists at UCLA have modded a cellphone into a portable blood tester capable of detecting HIV, malaria, and other illnesses. Blood tests today require either refrigerator-sized machines that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars or a trained technician who manually identifies and counts cells under a microscope. These systems are slow, expensive and require dedicated labs to function. And soon they could be a thing of the past."

Man who set up alternate email for White House dies in plane crash

From at-Largely (Larisa Alexandrovna):
200812201504Mike Connell set-up the alternate email and communications system for the White House. He was responsible for creating the system that hosted the infamous GWB43.com accounts that Karl Rove and others used. When asked by Congress to provide these emails, the White House said that they were destroyed. But in reality, what Connell is alleged to have done is move these files to other servers after having allegedly scrubbed the files from all “known” Karl Rove accounts.

In addition, I have reason to believe that the alternate accounts were used to communicate with US Attorneys involved in political prosecutions, like that of Don Siegelman. This is what I have been working on to prove for over a year. In fact, it was through following the Siegelman-Rove trail that I found evidence leading to Connell. That is how I became aware of him. Mike was getting ready to talk. He was frightened.”

Graham writes: "Unfortunately, he won’t get to talk. He died in a plane crash yesterday."

Techfluff.tv - The UK tech scene delivered with a wink

After a couple of episodes, it’s becoming clear that Techfluff.TV is in many respects the UK’s answer to Pop17 and RocketBoom. Every week TechFluff delves into the world of web-celebrities and tech startups, particularly the London scene right now, but increasingly across Europe (if the Le Web video is anything to go by). What’s fun about TechFluff is that it doesn’t take the industry too seriously (hence “fluff”, referring to the lighter side of things - honest). And host Hermoine Way has the hutspa to go up to any Web player and ask them anything - including asking Michael Arrington where he’d like a Gaping Void cartoon drawn. The show comes out every week and is definitely worth catching. The second episode features an interview with TechCrunch UK’s Mike Butcher (me) and the latest one features our esteemed editor at Le Web. Let’s hope it goes daily some time. And while we’re on the lighter side, check out Paul Carr, increasingly the UK’s tech satirist.

The Ning Exodus Begins: Adult Networks, It’s Time To GTFO

The eviction of Ning’s adult sites is in full swing. The actual shut down of the sites doesn’t happen until January 5 (extended from January 1), but the sites that are affected have now received an email with instructions on how to get their content off Ning.

Ning CEO Gina Bianchini says only about 1% of the 675,000 networks are being asked to leave for having adult content. She also points out that Ning attracts 2,500 - 3,000 new networks daily.

The reason Ning is shutting down adult sites despite the fact that cofounder Marc Andreessen thinks Ning should “let people fundamentally do what they want?”

Google.

Ning uses Google for advertising, and Google doesn’t like adult content. That puts Ning on a bit of a slippery slope when it comes to defining what is and isn’t adult content. But presumably they’ve now drawn that line, and those 1% of networks that are on the wrong side of it have been notified. So pack your content, and get out.

Review: Ultrasone HFI-580 headphones

ultrasone_view
You may have seen the review of Ultrasone’s mega-high-end Series 9 headphones the other day. Well, the company doesn’t just make $1600 cans; these HFI-580s represent the more affordable end of their product spectrum, and although they cost about 90% less, I’m thinking they probably sound 90% as good.

I’ve always believed that at about $200 with headphones is the beginning of diminishing returns. And although I’ve had my eyes opened in the last couple years on just what my music can sound like with a good pair of cans, I’m skeptical of the benefits of spending more than this, especially when $200 sounds so good.

Ultrasone is very proud of the technology that goes into their headphones, touting the virtual surround effect, radiation shielding, and lowered sound pressure. I think they have a right to be so, because their S-Logic system for expanding the soundstage works wonderfully.

ultrasone_inside

The HFI-580s reproduced my music very well, and with a feel totally different from the excellent Klipsch in-ear headphones I use with my laptop or pocket player. While the Klipschs seem to put the music beautifully right inside your head, these Ultrasones, as must be expected with a large isolating headphone pair, expand the sound enormously. It seems to be taking place everywhere but your head. Whether you prefer one or the other is a matter of taste, although with movies and games in general I’d say it’s better to go with the “external” sound.

I know my music pretty well, and I’ve found that even with the best headphones there are tradeoffs: songs sound different in one pair than in another, not necessarily better or worse, but depending on what the song has going on, a pair can accentuate or fight against the natural sound. I found this to be the case with the Grails song “Burning off Impurities,” in which I detected a growing theme several seconds earlier due to the way the sound was reproduced, but then a horn part that comes in a minute later (which I love) was much less noticeable than on my speakers.

The sound range was great. I pushed the low end up super high on a few songs to see if the headphones would distort before the equalizer clipped the sound, but the bass remained warm and loud. The high end is powerful, perhaps a bit too much so; when I was testing the headphones out in Far Cry 2, a certain (possibly buggy) sniper rifle’s noise made such a crack every time I fired it that I had to avoid the gun altogether or else turn the volume down when I needed it. The mid range is present but I feel that because of the expanded soundstage, the low and highs overpower it. You can tweak the sound, of course, but the HFI-580s don’t have the incredibly even coverage that my in-ears have.

ultrasone_fold

The headphones also fold up, which is nice. They’re pretty comfortable although you’ll want to take them off occasionally to let your ears breathe. It gets hot in there.

As usual, my review is going on too long. I don’t need to detail the minor shortcomings of these great headphones — it’s more important to say that their best asset is the large soundstage they create, which makes every piece of music simply seem bigger. They’re very powerful and yet, if you believe what Ultrasone says, they produce more loudness with less direct pressure on the eardrum; I think this is because they get that surround sound by bouncing the waves off your pinna. The HFI-580s can be found for quite a bit less than the list price of $200, and if you’re looking for a good pair of closed-type headphones with good isolation and great sound, you can do a lot worse than these.

Watergate "Deep Throat" Mark Felt Dead At 95

Hugh Pickens writes "W. Mark Felt Sr., 95, associate director of the FBI during the Watergate scandal, better known as 'Deep Throat,' the most famous anonymous source in American history, died at his home in Santa Rosa, California. Felt secretly guided Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to pursue the story of the 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee's headquarters at the Watergate office buildings, and later of the Nixon administration's campaign of spying and sabotage against its perceived political enemies. 'It's impossible to exaggerate how high the stakes were in Watergate,' wrote Felt in his 2006 book A G-Man's Life. 'We faced no simple burglary, but an assault on government institutions, an attack on the FBI's integrity, and unrelenting pressure to unravel one of the greatest political scandals in our nation's history.' No one knows exactly what prompted Felt to leak the information from the Watergate probe to the press. He was passed over for the post of FBI director after Hoover's death in 1972, a crushing career disappointment. 'People will debate for a long time whether I did the right thing by helping Woodward. The bottom line is that we did get the whole truth out, and isn't that what the FBI is supposed to do?'"

The E63 on Amazon is listed as the “International Version with No U.S. Warranty" while there’s an E71 being sold unlocked for $375.99 that’s listed as the “U.S. Version with Warranty.” There’s an international version of the E71 going for $454.99, which leads me to believe that if there were to be a US-specific version of the E63 offered, it’d likely cost less than the international version AND it’d have a warranty.

No word on an actual release date, but you can pre-order it if you’re interested.

The Post-Bilski Era Gets Underway

bfwebster writes "A set of pharmaceutical process patents for 'evaluating and improving the safety of immunization schedules' (Classen v. Biogen et al.; see US Patents 6,420,139; 6,638,379; 5,728,385; 5,723,283) were held to be invalid due to unpatentability. The decision was appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, but was upheld with a terse citation to In re Bilski (which decision we discussed here). Here's the entire text of the appeals decision: 'In light of our decision in In re Bilski, 545 F.3d 943 (Fed. Cir. 2008) (en banc), we affirm the district court's grant of summary judgment that these claims are invalid under 35 U.S.C. 101. Dr. Classen's claims are neither "tied to a particular machine or apparatus" nor do they "transform a particular article into a different state or thing." Bilski, 545 F.3d at 954. Therefore we affirm.' It will be interesting to see what happens when these same standards start getting applied to software-related patents."

Extended 1400mAh G1 battery now shipping

BASI14TMG1-2T If you own the T-Mobile G1, you might find yourself longing for an extended battery to replace the included 1150mAh battery that comes with the phone. I recently picked up a 1200mAh battery off of eBay for $5.99 and, believe it or not, it actually feels like I’m getting a barely-noticeable increase in battery life – barely noticeable, but noticeable nonetheless (although, again, barely).

Well, while there have been promises of standard-sized G1 batteries that are able to pack in as much as 1400mAh, a substantial improvement over the standard battery, they’ve been slow to be released (if released at all).

I’ve been checking Seidio.com somewhat regularly to see when their version’s going to ship (it’s been saying Coming Soon for a while now) and I just noticed today that it’s shipping. I’m not sure how many days it’s been shipping because I haven’t checked in about a week but, hey, it’s there for $42.95 and ready to ship. I’ve purchased stuff from Seidio before and I can attest that it’s a legitimate store (and no, I don’t own stock, work for them, know them, think they’re cute, or play racquetball on the weekends with any of them).

I’ll pick one up and review it soon, so sit tight.

No Gizmondo in ‘08, but redesigned and open-sourced for WinMo and Android in ‘09

gizmondo

Gizmondo fans may be disappointed, although not entirely surprised, to hear that the next generation of their favorite handheld gaming device will miss its end-of-year target launch date (after missing its May 2008 launch already).

Apparently something called “the economy” is slowing things down and Team Gizmondo actually started looking for a new equipment manufacturer after the original Chinese company hired to build the thing had been “dragging their feet,” according to tech reporter Hans Sandberg.

Upon searching for a better manufacturer, it was decided that the Gizmondo hardware needed to be redesigned altogether. Current plans apparently entail building added functionality into Windows Mobile and Android devices in the form of an advanced OMAP3 graphics chip from Texas Instruments. The software platform will also apparently be completely open, as in, no restrictions for developers whatsoever. You can code up a game, put it on the Gizmondo market, and see if it sells. There’d be no verification process by the company. Iffy? We’ll see.

As far as the device itself is concerned, it’ll actually work as a phone and will be available in two versions – Windows Mobile and Android. Says Sandberg,

The new Gizmondo will come in two versions, Windows CE and Linux based Android. And as it will be built on a smartphone platform, it will have a phone! But, it will not cost 99 dollars, for the simple reason that it costs more to by from OEM’s than if you have a large manufacturer who can build everything from scratch.

Of course, the actual launch date and definitive pricing will be pretty important – and we have neither of those figures yet.

An In-Depth Look At Game Piracy

TweakGuides is running a detailed examination of PC game piracy. The author begins with a look at the legal, moral, and monetary issues behind copyright infringement, and goes on to measure the scale of game piracy and how it affects developers and publishers. He also discusses some of the intended solutions to piracy. He provides examples of copy protection and DRM schemes that have perhaps done more harm than good, as well as less intrusive measures which are enjoying more success. The author criticizes the "culture of piracy" that has developed, saying. "Fast forward to the 21st century, and piracy has apparently somehow become a political struggle, a fight against greedy corporations and evil copy protection, and in some cases, I've even seen some people refer to the rise of piracy as a 'revolution.' What an absolute farce. ... Piracy is the result of human nature: when faced with the option of getting something for free or paying for it, and in the absence of any significant risks, you don't need complex economic studies to show you that most people will opt for the free route."

"Cuteness, design, technology, luxury, kitsch" - A Q&A with Gizmine's Douglas Krone

gizmine.jpgEver been sent by a gadget blog to the product page of some wonderful foreign tech-tchotchke, only to find it impossible to buy the damn thing? Enter Gizmine, a U.S.-operated online store that ships bizarre goods worldwide from Japan.

A sister site to Dynamism, which imports ultra-portable computers that Americans would otherwise be hard-pressed to find, it was launched a few weeks ago by Dynamism's CEO Douglas Krone.

I fired off some questions about his unusual line of business. Here are his replies.

BBG: What's the story behind Dynamism?

Krone: Dynamism became famous for supplying early-adopters around the world with the latest and greatest, direct from Japan. As the business grew, it evolved into a focus on high-end mobility--focused on a limited selection of products that is best-of-class and cutting-edge in every category. You'll find the latest gadgets from Japan, innovative 1-pound PCs from Korea, exclusive mobile phones, even the world's first consumer-focused RFID reader from a French designer. So Dynamism is a boutique-like shopping experience and coupled with a heavy emphasis on personalized customer service--our goal is that you feel like you are dealing with a luxury hotel concierge that happens to be a tech expert. It's all a great model, but we wanted something different for Gizmine.

BBG: Why Gizmine?

Krone: Shopping in Tokyo is a chaotic, sensory overload experience partly thanks to compellingly unique gadgets, cuteness, design, technology, luxury, kitsch -- and extra helpings of gadgets and cuteness.  We wanted to bring a taste of that experience to shoppers all over the world.  Of course, with some of the Gizmine gadgets--and again just as if you were shopping in Tokyo--there is liberal use of Japanese. Many of the digital pets purr in a foreign language, and some things are just so wacky that buyers really need to have a sense of adventure.

BBG: What challenges presented themselves as you went about developing the new online store?

Krone: The focus is totally different from Dynamism. Figuring out how to deliver that shopping-in-Shibuya rush, given our ambition to offer hundreds of products with which people might have no familiarity, was interesting.  It ends up a shopping nightmare or addictive fun. Since we were trying for the latter, the site is clean and visually driven.

As you walk through the aisle of your favorite store, nobody chatters in your ear. For Gizmine, products are bliss and text is bad. Even our mouseover product descriptions don't interfere with the product view. That product view is like looking on the shelf of your favorite store, but with better search options. Maybe you only want to see blue gadgets, or maybe only blue gadgets with a skull theme.

BBG: People talk a lot about the recession affecting consumer electronics and luxuries: have you felt the bite?

Krone: Especially in October, there were some days that people weren't spending, but consumption seems to be steadily recovering since then. However, as they say, it is still in recovery. Even so, Christmas shopping has been pretty healthy. Perhaps it is because we are delivering things that are new and unique, with so many "no way" gadgets at stocking stuffer price points, that Gizmine is off to a great start. But, I don't think our experience can be extrapolated to the broader economy or the really big electronics makers.

BBG: What is it about these imports that casts such a spell on us?

Krone: Japan's consumers think clever technology and great design is just precious! Not just avant-garde consumers (the market we target in the world outside Japan), but the vast majority. And that means fantastic things get made and marketed, things that can't be found anywhere else.  They cast a spell on us because good design is innately appealing, we love whimsy, and we appreciate the intellectual quality of dumb gadgets.

Gizmine delivers globally from Japan.

Street Fighter IV special edition rocks your world: The game, HD anime movie, figurine & more

sf4ceps3

Good God, the $80 special edition of Street Fighter IV is absolutely tremendous. You get the game itself, a “limited edition,” that is, not sold anywhere else, figurine (Ryu in the PS3 version, C. Viper in the Xbox 360), a 65-minute anime movie called Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind (Blu-ray for the PS3, and a special 360-only disc that contains the movie in 720p for the Xbox 360), a Prima mini strategy guide, a CD soundtrack and exclusive downloadable content (DLC) that Capcom refuses to reveal right now.

I think you’ll agree that this is one special edition that’s worth the extra $20. I mean, Blu-ray movies alone go for $30 a pop, so even if Capcom only included the game and the movie in the package it’d be a deal. But no, Capcom has gone above and beyond this time around. You’ll also notice that Ryu is on the cover of the box now, and not Chun-Li as was originally planned. If nothing else, Capcom knows how to please its fans.

It’s not even a question: I will be buying this special edition.

Warner Music Group Disappearing From YouTube: Both Sides Take Credit [MediaMemo]

Warner Music Group’s videos are disappearing from YouTube. The move to take down the videos started early Saturday morning. It’s a result of a breakdown in negotiations between Google and the music label over a licensing deal, which was set to expire soon.

Who actually made the move to drop the label’s content from the world’s biggest video site is a matter of dispute, though. Both sides are taking credit for the decision.

Here’s Warner Music (WMG)’s statement:

We are working actively to find a resolution with YouTube that would enable the return of our artists’ content to the site. Until then, we simply cannot accept terms that fail to appropriately and fairly compensate recording artists, songwriters, labels and publishers for the value they provide.

But a person familiar with the situation tells me that the two companies were close to an agreement until recently, when Warner changed its terms. In response, Google (GOOG) made the move to yank the label’s content.

Google’s blog post about the matter is more oblique. But note that it doesn’t say it is taking the music down at Warner’s request:

Sometimes, if we can’t reach acceptable business terms, we must part ways with successful partners. For example, you may notice videos that contain music owned by Warner Music Group being blocked from the site.

As I explained yesterday, music videos are some of the most popular content on YouTube. But the videos are also money-losers for the video site, because it has to pay the labels each time someone views a clip, regardless of whether it’s generating any revenue. YouTube’s contracts with all of the the big labels — in addition to Warner, it has pacts with Sony (SNE), Universal Music Group and EMI — are set to expire in the near future, so there are multiple games of chicken to watch here.

Meanwhile, taking down an entire music company’s catalog can take quite a while, which means that if you head to YouTube right now, you can still find plenty of Warner stuff  there — like the Madonna channel, which has golden oldies like this one:

The cannon is made from a simple mish-mash of PVC pipes, a schrader valve, and a bike pump to pressurize the air. Once everything is all set to go, the Christmas Cannon is “loaded with the spirit of Christmas” and “is then aimed at something horribly devoid of Christmas-ness and then blasts it with goodness.” Good stuff. It’d probably double as some sort of summertime cannon, too, shooting out the spirit of hotdogs and fireworks and whatnot.

MOG Music Network Pushes Back Affiliate Payments, Are They In Trouble?

When music blog network and discovery platform MOG launched an advertising network last August, CEO David Hyman described it as a “Federated Media for music sites” (note: we partner with FM for TechCrunch). Dubbed MOG Music Network, it allows independent music bloggers to syndicate content to Mog.com and customize ads that appear on their websites, enabling them to generate revenues greater than what they’d get from ad networks like Google AdSense.

Now, a tipster that’s part of the program, tells us that MMN is seriously behind on payments and that they’re raising the payment terms significantly. This is the e-mail he/she received from MOG:

Greetings MMN affiliates,

MMN is now 275 strong. We’re really thrilled with the fantastic response we’re receiving from advertisers. Examples of advertisers MMN has featured in the last 60 days include SanDisk, Electronic Arts, and Sony Pictures. Our sales pipeline for 2009 is massive as a result of the enthusiastic reception to MMN among the biggest brand marketers in the world. They recognize MMN as more valuable, and with a cooler audience, than MySpace, Facebook, Imeem, and others. These marketers get that the tastemakers and influencers live on your sites.

Some of the proof is already in the pudding. MMN has averaged over $5.50 CPM in the last 60 days with 50%+ sell through rates, outpacing many other ad networks.

While demand for advertising on MMN continues to be strong, we are seeing a distinct slowdown in advertiser-issued payments. Regrettably, MOG doesn’t have the luxury of paying out affiliates before advertiser payments are collected. This means that we have to push back our payment terms to 120 days, starting with October 2008 earnings onward.

I ask that you be patient with us as we work to collect your earnings. We’re dealing with cream of the crop advertisers who, I assure you, will pay out.

Thanks for your understanding,

Andrei Marinescu
Director, Business Development | MOG

It reads like a classical corporate message announcing bad news. Start off with the good: tout your member numbers and the ‘massive sales pipeline’, say how special the network really is, boast about your impressive CPM rates, say how much better than competitors you are. Then go on with the bad news, get it over with swiftly and then get to the reassurance part, and never forget to thank the recipient for their understanding in advance.

According to the company’s FAQ, which has yet to be updated, payments were issued within 60 days of the last day of the month in which revenue was earned up until now.

It’s always possible that there is effectively nothing extraordinary going on and that the problems will be solved and affiliates paid out in full, but we wouldn’t be surprised that there’s more to the story here, and that MOG is feeling the sting of the recession like so many other ad networks and publishers are.

MOG is venture-backed: after raising $3.2 million in angel funding, they raised Series A funding to the tune of $2.8 million in April 2008 from Universal Music Group, Sony BMG and The Angels’ Forum. Their total funding is thus $6 million. The company also has legendary music producer and co-head of Columbia Records Rick Rubin on its board.

Englide n.zero ventilators from Hungary

nzeroDo you know where Hungary is? No? Not a problem, let’s leave it that way. Until now there were no Hungarian products for computers - or none of them worth mentioning. Englide, a Hungarian manufacturer has released a nice set of silent vents - yeah, they’re only ventilators but everyone has to start somewhere. These vents provide 19-36 CFM on 17dBA, and that is pretty silent. If you want one of these you either have to travel to Hungary - which I’d rather do If you want to have a great time - or wait for the international distribution to start.
