"Let's not trivialize serious issues for commercial gains" - Akshay Kumar

Click above for more movie stills While Akshay Kumar gets ready for an exciting four weeks ahead with the release of two of his films - Jumbo and Chandni Chowk To China - round the corner, he is keeping his promises intact when it comes to being associated with a cause. One such cause is the Special Olympics that offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities in a year-round training. This is then followed by competitions in 30 Olympic-type summer and winter sports. Prior to the World Winter Games, a Global Law Enforcement Torch Run is organized and Delhi will be one of the host cities for the Torch Run. Incidentally, this time around, the run would begin from Chandni Chowk, Delhi. "It's a pleasant coincidence to begin this drive from 'Chandni Chowk', the place which is closest to my heart. I have been associated with Special Olympics as their brand ambassador for quite some time now and am looking forward to the torch traveling across the globe", says Akshay while making plans for his visit to Delhi on 21st December when the torch would arrive in the city. Tell him that the torch would travel from Delhi to even Shanghai, China, hence bringing real life close to reel life of Chandni Chowk To China and he protests, "Let's not mix up pleasure with a cause here. I will talk about the film when a platform is suited for its promotion. Here we are talking about people with intellectual disabilities so let's not trivialize it for commercial gains. We are dealing with sensitive issues here." While Akshay Kumar will be running along with the Torch, Chief Minister of Delhi Mrs. Shiela Dixit will be present at the ceremony to flag off the Torch Run. Akshay Kumar has been attached to this worldwide initiative that is considered to be quite prestigious across 180 odd countries where it has its presence. The Special Olympics currently serve 2.5 million people (with 500,000 people just in India) with intellectual disabilities in more than 200 Programs which are carried out across these 180 odd countries around the world. Chosen as a brand ambassador in 2005, Akshay Kumar hopes to spread awareness about the cause by being associated with it. He concludes by stating, "I believe all these individuals with special needs certainly deserve the same respect that other athletes get. It is a matter of pride to see them participating with great vigor and unparalleled confidence at such a global platform."

Tigmanshu-Govinda patch up, Showman will start rolling again in Jan 2009

One doesn't know if Tigmanshu Dhulia has gone back to being the big Govinda fan that he used to be. But the director heaved a sigh of relief after Govinda relented and agreed to complete their London-based comedy where Govinda plays a con-man with Celina Jaitly and Rimi Sen as his co(n)-stars. The director, anxious to somehow complete his tragic comedy pending since Govinda left the London schedule suddenly, has agreed to all of Govinda's terms and condition including the film's title that had changed from Showman to King Con and Con Flick. "The film is finally titled Showman as it originally was. I've also deleted the portions Govinda objected to from a song in London featuring the Queen's look-alike. I've fifty minutes of edited footage. Govinda will now shoot the rest of the film from 12 January."

"Maybe Deepika can get R.K. Films to produce my film" - Kalpana Lajmi

Call it a rishta by satellite. But prolific filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi is related to Deepika Padukone. "We're both descendents of the great Guru Dutt. Deepika and I are Saraswat Brahmins. Her family and mine can be traced back to Kashmir. We're basically evicted Kashmiri Pundits who migrated to Bangalore. If you remember my uncle Guru Dutt (who was my mother painter Lalita Lajmi's brother) and Deepika's father Prakash Padukone are both settled in Bangalore. Deepika is definitely related to me. Though she doesn't know it. But I hope she knows about me" And now Kalpana has a script ready for Deepika. "I saw her in Om Shanti Om and Bachna Ae Haseeno and found her to possess that old-world grace which came naturally to Madhuri and Aishwarya. I don't think any other girl today has that quality. I was once planning to cast Aishwarya as a politician in Singhasan. I'd love to cast Deepika in that role." Kalpana isn't sure Deepika would reciprocate her enthusiasm. "Why should she? I'm a down-and-out filmmaker. I haven't put a project together in the last three years because of various reasons, the main being finances which a filmmaker like me who suffers a double disadvantage of being woman." On top of it all, Kalpana has been facing a series of illnesses in her family, first her father and mother then her guru and companion composer Bhupen Hazarika. Kalpana who started as an assistant to Shyam Benegal says she's very proud of her mentor. "At the ripe old age of 74, Shyam Babu has made a hit film Welcome To Sajjanpur. He had to struggle for years to make this project come true. As for me, I'm so much his junior and still can't get funds for my new film." Kalpana is hopeful about making Singhasan with Deepika. "Maybe she can get R.K. Films to produce it," jokes Kalpana.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi script goes to the Oscars library

It's time for YRF to start their celebrations as Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has had a successful run at the BO since its release last week. And if that was not enough the news is that YRF has got a call from the Oscar library requesting them for the script of Rab Ne...for its permanent collection. News has it that it's basically the sensitivity of the screenplay and the unusual love story that attracted the attention of the Oscar library. For the uninitiated, the scripts in the collection are kept at the famous Margaret Herrick Library and are made accessible strictly for research purposes only. It's actually the students, filmmakers, writers and actors who can avail of the script. Not just that, the screenplays may only be viewed in the library since they do not get circulated and no screenplay is allowed to be photocopied. Critics may not have given Rab Ne... the much expected five star ratings, but being chosen for the Oscar library is an achievement in itself! SRK will surely agree to this!

Pritam a victim of panic attack, hospitalized

Ok, so Pritam is fine now but he wasn't really doing so good last week. After a bout of a severe panic attack that resulted in his fainting after a Live performance, he was hospitalized in Mumbai. It was only after a thorough investigation was done by the doctors for full four days that he was allowed to leave the hospital. Up and running today, he recollects the horrific phase that he went through once he suffered the attack. "I was in Cuttack when this happened. I had come back to the 'Green Room' feeling a little tired but didn't really anticipate that it could get worse. I just collapsed and the next thing I knew was getting some initial treatment in Cuttack itself. I was moved to Mumbai soon after and admitted to Lilavati hospital. It was quite a torrid time for my family since venturing out in a public place was not really called for, especially after the horrific time that Mumbai had just gone through", remembers Pritam. "Once I was in hospital, the doctors did an entire check up of me from head to toe. The tests went on for full four days and it was only after they were convinced that I could be on my own did they allow me to leave. Doctors tell me that this happened due to heavy stress and exhaustion. They have put me on medication. I guess I will have to be more disciplined about my working hours now. They have been crazy otherwise." How about kicking his smoking habit, as a chain smoker, he is known to be putting down 50 odd sticks a day? "Yeah, I know it is bad. Each of the doctors out there was unanimous in stating that I had to get rid of the stick fast. I have been trying to reduce the volume but am not too sure whether I would be able to get rid of it completely. People close to me tell me that they were more scared than me when I suffered the attack. May be at least for their sake, I will make a conscious effort to stay away from smoking", he promises. Now that he is back on his feet, one wonders how his hospital admission didn't make any news. After all celebrities are known for making headlines even if they go out to have their kids vaccinated? "Ok, now you are really exaggerating the entire thing", he says after a hearty laugh, "Come on, yeh sab star logon ke saath hota hai. I am not a star yaar!"

Dino Morea goes for sailing at the Volvo Ocean Race

The sea has for centuries held the imagination and darkest fears of man. This is probably the reason why sailing in the oceans is considered as one of the most adventurous activities. And keeping this adventure streak alive is the Volvo Ocean Race. The race that is a test of sailing prowess and human endeavor based on the great sea farers from the time gone by. The main objective of the race is to record the fastest time between ports, and today is seen as being at the zenith of all sports. To find out more about this Bollywood Hungama caught up with Dino Morea who was recently invited by team Puma to come aboard their vessel for a day to experience the sailing. Dino chirps happily about this day when he made one of his childhood dream come true by boarding the Puma craft saying, "It was simply awe inspiring; the way the team works to battle it out with the elements in the middle of the sea." Dino was on board for just a day and the experience he shares with us seems like he was along for a long voyage. "We set out from the port of Cochin and sailed a few miles into the sea, it was really tough. I had never expected sailing to be so tiring and exhilarating." Further he also adds, "When I was invited by the guys at Puma to experience a day aboard their ship, I was really happy and glad to get this opportunity, but now that I have my feet firmly planted on the ground I am still awed by what the racers face through the entire course."

"Shah Rukh and me have made it on our own" - Akshay Kumar

As Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi reaches mid-week, it is crystal clear that Shah Rukh Khan and Yash Raj Films have a big money spinner up their sleeves. With no questions being asked about the big opening that Ghajini is all set to take, industry is smiling again. Hat-trick of big bucks flowing in is pretty much on the anvil as Chandni Chowk To China is on it's way to create a hat-trick of box office winners once it releases on 16th January 2009. No wonder, there is a lot riding on each of these biggies. Says Akshay Kumar, "Shah Rukh Khan and me are the only actors in the current times who have attained this level of success all on our own without any Godfather backing us. We came without any connections in Bollywood and still have managed to reach this stage by sheer hard work and determination." He chooses to shrug away the 'who amongst the two is supreme' talk when the question was raised around his rap number in Chandni Chowk To China. In the song composed by Bohemia which would play during the film's end credit titles, there are a few lines that go as: "Mera Ek Haath Ka Khel, Sara Bollywood Ek Mera Koi Nahi Mel, Acting Karne Chale Vaise Hazaaron, Badsaah Ek Baaki Sare Fail" Is this the superstar talking for himself? "But if you listen carefully, am I bringing in the 'superstar' angle at all? And there is a lot of other stuff which is being talked about in the song, especially the parts around me coming from the Chandni Chowk lanes and beating the odds to live life on my own terms. Where does he question around me reigning supremacy come in? In any case, a rap number belonging to such situation and genre is all about attitude and this is what is demonstrated in the entire song. Let's not make much ado about it", protests Akshay. Well, we won't Akshay, though the message is loud and clear with lines like: "Jaun Jahan Pe Mera Dil Mujhe Kheeche, Main Nayi Duniya Aaya, Meri Duniya Chod Ke Peeche, Aur Jab Andaaz Koi Raaaz Na Aaya, Maine Mere Anadaz Aap Banaya" Any famous last words? Well there you go and decide for yourself! "Dushman Kare Waar, Maine Maani Na Haar Log Bole Mujhe Bollywood Star, Naam Mera Akshay Kumar
