Akbar Khan is hunting for an actress to play a single mom in his next

After his marathon epic Taj Mahal, Akbar Khan is now planning to start a quickie entitled Taxi Driver. Says Khan who gave Smita Patil a seductively psychotic role in Haadsa four decades ago, "It's the story of a single mother with a ten-year old kid...sends out a great message against terrorism. It's a subject that's been close to my heart." Apparently, Akbar Khan has been having trouble getting the top leading ladies for the role. Lara Dutta was a top contender for the part. But she's already playing a mother to a growing son on Shah Rukh Khan's very special request in Priyadarshan's Billoo Barber. Other screen queens are disinclined to play mum. Akbar Khan will look seriously for the young sexy mom in Taxi Driver. Right now, he's determined to revive interest in his last project Taj Mahal. Long before Zulfi Syed went into Bigg Boss, he played Shah Jehan in Akbar Khan's rendering of Taj Mahal. And now the producer-director hopes to cash in on Zulfi's popularity on television to win a large audience for his neglected epic. "God has his own ways of deciding who and what to bless at what time. Zulfi will be joining me in Goa later this month for the 'All India Premiere Of Akbar Khan's Directors' Cut Of Taj Mahal'. I'm glad Zulfi is out of Bigg Boss. I was hoping he'd win and we could've a double celebration in Goa." Says Khan, "Starting with the Dubai film festival last year, a great momentum has been created for my film. I've now made a director's international cut. I've cut some of the songs and edited the material to suggest a European and American sensibility. I've pruned the songs and cut the length by 25 minutes." On November 24, Akbar Khan took Taj Mahal (released three years ago) to the Cairo International Film Festival. "By the grace of the Almighty, it will be shown at the Goa International Film Festival as a tribute to the Taj Mahal on the November 30. It was screened at Abu Dhabi three months ago and got rave reviews. I've just returned from Syria where the film was screened." Khan blames the film's poor marketing for its poor show at the box-office. "You cannot attribute the film's low opening in India to the lack of stars. Some of the biggest hits of all times like Bobby, Hero and more recently, Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na and Rock On have starred newcomers. Any good product marketed badly fails. I was a victim of various marketing failures." Akbar Khan is now planning an overseas release of Taj Mahal. He also wants to do a film on the life of Changez Khan whose budget would run into multiple crores. The recession doesn't bother Akbar. "America survived even the Great Depression. This is nothing in comparison. Roti kapada makaan aur manoranjan will never be too prohibitive."

Post Bluffmaster, Rohan Sippy reunites with Abhishek Bachchan

Rohan Sippy certainly has a lot happening for him. As a co-producer of Chandni Chowk To China and someone who has contributed from the scratch till the execution of this biggie with writer Sridhar Raghavan and director Nikhil Advani, he has been waiting with a bated breath to see the kind of response that this film generates. His other production, The President Is Coming would eventually be coming on 9th January, just a week before Chandni Chowk To China and in the interim he is counting days, as the 16th January release of the Akshay Kumar starrer is just 30 days away. Meanwhile, he is getting groundwork in place for his Abhishek Bachchan film that will go on floors in April 2009. What's the title of the film? "Well, sometimes the most difficult part about writing a film is coming up with that elusive title. So yes, as you would have guessed it by now, we don't have any title yet. Heck, we are yet to finalise a girl as well", quips Rohan as he continues to get good feelers for his biggest film till date Chandni Chowk To China. "Yes, CC2C is my biggest till date. However, now it's time to get back into direction as well, lest I start loosing it all. I have to get my hands dirty fast and am looking forward to calling the shots again", winks Rohan who insists that this film now holds top priority in his return to direction more than three years after Bluffmaster. What is the film all about? "Well, since it's a Sridhar Raghavan's script, you can expect a lot of twists and turns. It is very different from what I have done before in Bluffmaster or Kuch Naa Kaho. I had an enjoyable experience while working on the script with Sridhar", is all that Rohan is willing to talk about his next venture. But Rohan, this is hardly any information being shared about the film! At the least, he can reveal the genre, isn't it? He laughs, "I have a hard time to decide the genre of even Bluffmaster, years after its release. Seriously, I can't put one tag against this film. It is hard to explain." He concludes on a serious note, "I am sure that there will be something extraordinary when we put this film together. When Abhishek and I did Bluffmaster together, we had embarked on doing something really crazy and different. You would see the same streak in our next film together as well."

"Why should we copy movies?" - Karan Johar

The news-report states that Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar are making films with similar subjects and shooting at the same location. Let's get more specific: The two film-makers are making different films based on the same Hollywood film - ARLINGTON ROAD. While Adi's film NEW YORK is already complete [the film has been shot in Philadelphia] and will be Yash Raj's first release in 2009, Karan has commenced the shooting of his film, also in Philadelphia. "Just because the two films are shot at the same location doesn't mean they have similar subjects," Karan Johar [currently in the U.S.] sets the record straight, "Earlier, they said KAL HO NAA HO was ANAND. Then they said DOSTANA was I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY. Now it's ARLINGTON ROAD. Why should we copy movies? Can't we come up with original stuff?" Karan continues in the same breath, "Adi and I are best friends. Do you think we would go to the extent of choosing the same story? Just because the two films have the backdrop of terrorism doesn't mean they are similar in content. Going by this logic, even DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAAYENGE, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, MOHABBATEIN and RAB NE BANA DI JODI have similar stories since they belong to the same genre."

Big Cinemas' staff sports Aamir Khan's Ghajini look

The staff of Big Cinemas is taking idol (hero) worship to a new height altogether. Why you ask? Well, the reason is pretty apparent. Just recently, about 100 employees at the Big Cinemas chain decided to go under the barber's scissors to have their locks shaved, thus making them an exact replica (at least the head) of Aamir from his soon to be released film Ghajini. Ghajini as we all know is a much anticipated release this Christmas. And after the recent terror attacks, people are looking forward for an entertaining film that will lure them back to the cinema halls. Tushar Dingra -COO of BIG Cinemas says, "We are very excited to be gearing up for what promises to be a huge release and are proud to be part of such a prestigious opportunity. The film's theme and Aamir's look have captured public imagination and we are no exception, except that we have taken the inspiration to a whole new level." Well by the looks of it, Aamir sure seems to have a massive fan following not just among theatre patrons but even theatre employees.

Aamir Khan features in Farhan Akhtar's talk show 'Oye! It's Friday'

Last Friday, Farhan Akhtar made his debut as a talk show host with his show called 'Oye! It's Friday'. The show featured Farhan's close friend Hrithik Roshan as the celebrity guest and also saw some interesting performances by the likes of Neha Dhupia, Hard Kaur and others. While some of the gags were pretty ordinary, the conversation between Farhan and his celeb guest Hrithik certainly made for interesting viewing. This week, Farhan's show 'Oye! It's Friday' will have none other than superstar Aamir Khan as the special celebrity guest. In this special episode, Aamir 'Perfectionist' Khan gets candid with Farhan on a variety of topics ranging from his experiences on his new film Ghajini to some interesting unknown facts about his family. He also talks at length about his relationship with his co-stars and peers, his favorite pastime, his passion for music and his many likes and dislikes. Farhan also gets Aamir to reveal the secret behind his 'killer' look in Ghajini and his penchant for pulling pranks on his friends and co-stars!! It may be recalled that Farhan's first directorial venture Dil Chahta Hai had Aamir as the main lead. Who would have thought then that Aamir would go on to direct a film (TZP) and Farhan would ever be seen in front of the camera (Rock On). Sticking on with the theme of being a completely entertaining show, 'Oye! It's Friday' will also see special performances by the super-sexy Tanushree Dutta and the very melodious Benny Dayal who has given us hits like 'Tu Hi Meri Dost Hai' and 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala'. Wait! There's more in store as the episode also showcases child prodigy Abhay Goel who is a pianist par excellence and a Limca Record Book holder all at the tender age of 10. So if its music, movies, masti, madness and much more that you are looking out for then 'Oye! It's Friday' is the one stop shop for all of it. Don't miss tuning in this Friday (Dec 19) to watch Aamir and Farhan at their wackiest and wickedest best only on NDTV Imagine at 10 pm IST.

"See, I'm better than SRK" - Vinay Pathak

It goes to say without a doubt that Vinay Pathak is one of the finest and the most talented actors we have in our film industry today. After having fried our bheja's with Bheja Fry, the mad man is back styling people's hair in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The comic genius plays the role of Bobby, a hair salon owner and a dear friend of Shah Rukh Khan in the film who helps SRK dress up in hip and happening colourful t-shirts, boots and a gelled look to impress his love interest played by debutant Anushka Sharma rather than cut peoples hair. Now as soon as the film got over in a special screening at the YRF Studios last Friday, the first person we called up to inform the best jodi of the film was apna Vinay babu. The extraordinary jodi of Vinay and SRK rocks in the film. Yes, it does remind you of yesteryear actor Deven Varma helping out Amol Palekar in Golmaal but this one's way too funny and yet high on emotions. Vinay is seen in a completely unbelievable get up this time. He has coloured his hair blonde, spiked it with a Mohican look and to make matters worse, even wears colourful printed tight fitted shirts and looks like a pukka cool dude. Over the phone from some birthday party he was attending, we congratulated him on his superb performance to which he answered, "Thank you so much. But thanks, also goes to Aditya Chopra who is sure, talented and has a vision to bring out the best from his actors. I told him to see Bheja Fry once and he went to the theatres to see it. Can you believe it? Moving on to Rab Ne..., he immediately called me up while he was writing for the supporting actors role and informed me that I was the only actor he thought of for this role". Pathak saab's been getting a lot of phone calls after the first day first show of Rab Ne... from all across the globe as he tells us, "I've got a call from Germany and many parts of India about my stand out performance". In his funny humorous style he adds, "See, I'm better than SRK", and laughs. Talking about his unusual dress code in the film, he replies, "A lot of hard work was put in by Aki Narula who is the costume designer of Rab Ne... and Adi Chopra gave in his creative ideas to enhance it further. I loved my look in the film because it's not often you get to play roles like these in a Yash Raj Film". Bobby barber best describes the film as a very well crafted, planned, debated and a discussed film with fun and emotions weaved in such a way that you'll love to watch it again and again. So what did the star say on his first ever experience of working with the King Khan? "SRK has got so much of style. He is hard working and very conducive to work with which helps actors like us to learn a great deal from an actor with so much experience", Vinay answered. With a strong supporting role like this one, Vinay Pathak continues to make people smile, laugh and for a change, sob a bit in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Mubaraka, Badhaiyaan, Phatake Vinay!

"I hope by the time I come to Mumbai, tempers would cool down" - Mikaal Zulfikar

Jagmohan Mundhra has invited his Shoot On Sight lead Mikaal Zulfikar to Mumbai. But will the young actor be allowed to work in Mumbai? Speaking from Karachi Mikaal says, "I need to be in Mumbai and work in Bollywood. I may have visa problems while coming to Mumbai, because I am a dual passport-holder (Pakistani and British). We're hearing a lot of anti-Pakistan sentiments coming from India. Some important people in India are talking about a war with Pakistan. That's the worst possible option for both countries. Both the countries are at war with terror. The countries should not be at war with each other." Contrary to the belief that Pakistan is jubilant over the terrorist attack on Mumbai, Mikaal affirms that the average Pakistani is as horrified by the attack on Mumbai as they were when Karachi was similarly attacked some time ago. Speaking from Karachi, Mikaal says, "The two attacks are no different. Both Pakistan and India are at war with terror. And I speak for ninety percent of Pakistan when I say what has happened in Mumbai has deeply saddened us Pakistanis. Mumbai is a second home to me. Over in Pakistan we face many more terror attacks than India. We're more terrorized than you are. I guess we've to live with terrorism in today's world. And we need to stand up and face it as a global community." Mikaal thinks Pakistan and India should come together to fight terrorism. "We in Pakistan are distraught that this should happen at a time when relations were getting so much better. We can't let terrorism triumph by letting relations suffer. A minuscule section of people are spoiling things between the countries." The young actor says he has no idea which groups struck Mumbai. "I get information from the news reports, just like anyone else. But we do know what happened in Mumbai was total terror, and we wouldn't wish this on anyone. We're neighbours. We need to work together. Even our Prime Minister has handled the situation sensibly, not getting provoked by the blame game. We understand India is angry. And we know some people are speaking out of emotions rather than rationality." Mikaal says the average Pakistani does not endorse terrorism. No one in Pakistan wants violence. "I've heard two Pakistani comedians working in Mumbai (Nadeem and Ehsaan) have been asked to fly back. Frankly, I hope by the time I come to Mumbai tempers would cool down. With due respects to Indian sentiments, to blame the whole of Pakistan is cruel and unfair. In Pakistan we share India's pain, Terror sabke liye terror hai." Says Mikaal, "I'd love to come to India, but if I feel it isn't safe then I won't. But I don't think that's the case. I've been to India before and I've never felt any hostility. I want to bring a message of peace and love from Pakistan and India. I hope the wounds heal by the time I come to Mumbai. If not, I'd like to heal them. For us in Pakistan a terror attack in Mumbai is as gruesome as an attack on Lahore or Karachi."

Deepika is the cover-girl for 'The Man' and 'ELLE' this December

Deepika Padukone needs no introduction for she is the girl par excellence who debuted in the smash hit flick Om Shanti Om, opposite none other than the King Khan himself! After OSO, Deepika was seen alongside beau Ranbir Kapoor in Bachna Ae Haseeno and despite being pitted against two haseenas, Deepika managed to stand her own. Now Deepika, who has been the face of countless brands, graces the cover of not one but two fashion and lifestyle magazines this month. While she is lending her pretty face to the latest edition of the famous lifestyle magazine 'The Man', Deepika is also seen strutting her stuff in the special anniversary issue of fashion magazine 'ELLE'. In 'The Man', Deepika speaks about how she manages to stay fit despite such a hectic schedule (a must read for all the wannabe Deepikas). Not just that, she also shares some of her beauty tips with the readers (again, a must read for all the wannabe Deepikas). Besides all of this, she gives the readers the actual reasons for her to be associated with a million brands that she is endorsing (needless to say, that, this again, is a must read for all the wannabe Deepikas). On the other hand 'ELLE' features Deepika in a shiny green silk and leather embellished dress, designed by Manish Arora. The special anniversary issue also gives a low down on ELLE's 50 'Most Stylish People' and on the 100 top peoples, things, places and trends that shaped the year 2008. Deepika surely knows what it means to be seen at the right place at the right time. After all, being the cover girl of two top fashion and lifestyle magazines, weeks before of the release of her next flick Chandni Chowk To China will surely get her all the attention she truly deserves. Way to go babe!!!
